‘The Answer To Your First Question Is Very Complicated!!’ Leonard Nimoy Melds With Tuesday’s FRINGE Finale!!

Published at:  May 13, 2009 1:59:04 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Good gravy! Teleporting bioterrorist David Robert Jones, the tabasco-loving eyebrow-challenged Observer AND Walter Bishop’s old roomie, shadowy Massive Dynamic founder William Bell – all in the same episode??

Last week Olivia was so busy hopping between alternate worlds I could hardly be bothered to care about the firestarter she was seeking.

“Fringe,” the season’s top-rated new series, has already received a 22-episode second-season order.

From a Sunday post in James Hibberd’s column:

When asked about how the second season of Fringe would differ from the first, [series co-creator J.J.] Abrams said, “The first year is about learning there is an enemy ... I would argue Season 2 is about getting to know the enemy ... Season 1 is building to a very specific type of confrontation ... there will be a really interesting shift in the fundamental paradigm of the show in a very cool way.”

Abrams added the finale will leave viewers with an idea of what the next season will look like and excited about what comes next.

“What’s particularly cool about where we’re finally going now is the story is working on all the character’s strengths,” Abrams said. “Over the course of the season you find what’s most exciting about a character. You’ll get a little piece of Peter’s ultimate story [in the finale], but it’s also a huge turning point for the other two characters as well.”

Fox says of tonight’s season finale, “There’s More Than One of Everything,” which introduces Leonard Nimoy as Bell:

The sudden and unexpected attack on someone with close ties to Fringe Division, the return of bioterrorist David Robert Jones (guest star Jared Harris) and the inexplicable disappearance of Walter set the stage for a non-stop, nail-biting season finale of FRINGE. Questions will be answered, observations made, loyalties tested and truths and identities revealed.

Identities revealed!!

    by jabbathemutt

The only two hits this year...on broadcast. But what is the crux of the difference between the two? What is that fine line that separates them?

Answer: Fringe is brilliant and The Mentalist will drag on for the next seven years...sucking the very life from what is left of your soul...all the while proving that Psych is infinitely better.

    The Mentalist is

    by jocutus

the most annoyingly smug character in years. If he was a real person acting like he does he would probably get punched in the face once a day. The show can only be improved by letting him get punched in the face while smiling smugly at his own genius once per episode. If he acted that way only toward criminals it would be bearable, but he acts like that to everyone.

When they go over by a minute or two it helps the ratings of the follow-up show, assuming that the show going over is higher rated, as AI usually is. I'm not sure exactly how it works, maybe someone here can go into more detail, but that's the gist.

Really Enjoyed this Season of "Fringe"

    by arcangel2020

"Fringe" is definitely my favorite new show of this past season, I have enjoyed each epsiode, thought that the storyline and characters were all well written (some of the plot and ideas were downright creept and cool and a little X-File-esque too).
Really like Anna Tov (Agent Dunham), she is a Hottie for sure..am surprised that I have liked Josuha Jackson and his character Peter (Haven't really been a big fan in the past) and of course there is John Noble's character Walter who is pretty kooky and has some of the best lines in the series so far.
I have also liked the who Mystery Story and the mention of an "Upcoming War" and all the creepy/spooking, trippy things the nefarious Massive Dynamics is up to as well.
All in all I think JJ Abrahms and his crew have done an excellent job creating a new series that has been highly enjoyable/watchable and keeps me coming back for more..it will be a nice transition from focusing on the Lost series to Fringe in the next year or so

I just hope to Freakin' God that JJ Abrahms doesn't pull a Tim Kring and fuck up the series and plot with a lameass and lackluster second or third season like "Heroes" (It's kinda sad that what was once a really good series has just...crashed and burned)
So! Pay attention JJ! I hope you are reading what the fans are saying here :)

    Mentalist vs. Fringe

    by doublearon

The ONLY reason they are compared is that they are broadcast television at the same time. Dumb. Tired of scheduled programming like this. ALL of it should be online with commercials, and w/o commercials if you want to pay for that. It's REAL simple. Hopefully, enough set top boxes (DVRs, Blu-Ray players, DVD players, game consoles) will have built-in internet streaming so it will be possible in the near future to DROP scheduled programming all together.
I'm just sore because Mentalist used to have episodes online and they switched to clips, so when I went back to catch up... nothing there. *sigh* Fringe has been borderline for me and my wife for a long time, but I generally like it and this looks like a turn for the better. We always enjoy the mentalist though... I think we've been watching the wrong one. :/

I can't put all the blame on her. She was actually okay in the (mostly boring) pilot, but they have given her SO little to fight for and so little to even BE throughout this series so far. The writers have struggled with her character from the beginning.
I'll give her this, she seems like could actually do the job she is doing, unlike many people put in roles like this.
Sadly, she doesn't have a screen presence or personality that could overwhelm the lackluster writing for the character.

    by capocapocapo

To the best of my knowledge, the reason some things go overtime as far as ratings is because the way ratings are done, they do them by the quarter hour. So, if the first 3-4 minutes of a show have a huge spike, it spikes the following show's numbers. At least, for the first chunk.

(I made an account to post that? Fuck.)

I have to admit, I had quite a few doubts throughout the season--there were times when it felt like the show was going nowhere, especially during the weaker, pattern attack of the week type episodes. But once it started getting into ZFT, alternate universes, and Oliva's past, everything ramped up. It's not quite as good as Supernatural S2/S4, but I look forward to a new Fringe episode every week. I'd have to disagree. With Fringe, I felt compelled to watch every week because I wanted to know what would happen. With Dollhouse, that never really happened--the only thing that kept me watching was the fleeting hope that maybe it would knock my socks off. And that only happened twice--once with Man on the Street, and another time with the Dollhouse traitor episode.
Dollhouse is my first Whedon experience, and I have to say, I came away distinctly unimpressed. Although I did like Whedon's Dr. Horrible.

I'm hard-pressed to find other speculative fiction shows to recommend. Fringe is good in a Hollywood adventure movie way, BSG was good in a dramatic & somewhat thought provoking way, and Stargate is good for the most part in a fun way. There just isn't enough science fictionish shows out there and so I find myself forced to say Dollhouse is worth watching if only to fill the quota.

That said if we were back in the days of Star Trek:TNG, DS9, Voyager, Babylon 5, X-Files, Farscape, Buffy, etc on TV - Dollhouse would barely rate a mention.

Well, in that sense I'd have to agree with you--solid science fiction shows are few and far between. So I suppose Dollhouse deserves a special mention by default. But if I had to recommend a bunch of sci-fi shows to someone, then yes, there's quite a few that I would cite before Dollhouse came to mind. Mostly DS9, haha. Probably one of the more satisfying sci-fi shows I've seen recently.

certainly not the best episode of the season, but strong never the less, and the ending was fun. I, for one, don't think its "too soon" I don't think there is anything offensive or disrespectful there. I agree it was a bit underwhelming for a finale, but I'm looking forward to a new season, and to learn more about the other worlds.

I friggin' loved this show at the beginning of the season, when each episode was a game of "find the hidden references to quantum mechanics". It's really lost steam for me at the end, and this season finale was no different. Their horseshit "explanation" for deja vu was really annoying to me.

The teleport sequence to the other world . . .

    by jocutus

I think it was a two step process. I'm assuming that when they hop dimensions they arrive at the same coordinates in the other world that they leave from here. So, first Olivia was moved from the elevator in our Dimension to the same elevator/building in Dimension B (this was the elevator with all the people in it). Then another flash and she was teleported from that building over to the WTC in their dimension to see Belly.

    by cant_stop_yawning2

Oh, I'll grant you, it isn't as daring as Lost - Lost changed everything and nothing will probably come close for awhile. Also, I don't know if these guys have an endgame in mind, but I really hope they do because now that they have established some big fun weirdness (like Peter being from the other side), it is time to set some goals. That is the best way to handle shows like this - you maintain a big fan base, keep the ratings up and kill it when it is ready to go.

That Truck Obviously Drove Through Holes In The Plot, Too!

    by logical

    A few questions:
1.If W. Bell inhabits this alternate universe, where's the alternate universe W. Bell?
    2. If there's any attempt to be scientifically accurate, there's a principle called Pauli's Exclusion that states no two identical fermions may occupy the same quantum state simultaneously (yet another science hole that marred the STAR TREK movie-- 2 Spocks occupying the same universe?). Did non alternate universe Bell have the alternate universe Bell eliminated before entering the alternate universe? How did he order the hit?
    3. Why would this mega powerful magnate leave everything he built behind to live in another universe? Because Jones was after him? W/ such untold wealth, couldn't Bell have any gnat sweatin' him wiped from any universe in the blink of an eye?
    4. If there's a headstone for a child named Peter Bishop, wouldn't there be a death certificate (by law, the only way you can procure a headstone is present a dc as proof of death) & other records (perhaps from a hospital) stating the child's death? If not, how did Walter plug the kid back into school after a prolonged illness & no other explanation?
    5. If this Peter is from an alternate universe, how did alternate universe Walter react to having his son taken from him?

This is the only ep I could sit through (I love Nimoy) & it's just far too implausible, weakly plotted & cast (Rupert Murdoch's niece is wooden & ugly)to give any more attention to.
I hope the 2nd season will give the other networks a reason to greenlight better, more thoughtful Sci Fi.

PS: As much as I love the new cast, STAR TREK was just a rehash of THE WRATH OF KHAN (w/ ST: Generations' planet killer) w/ Spock the object of vengeance rather than Kirk & better effects.
When Nero yelled, "Spock!" I could've sworn I heard Kirk yelling "Khan!"

Spreading the alternate universe thingee rather thinly, JJ.
    Time for some new schtick.

Hope I haven't pissed anyone off w/ these observances.

    by v'shael

I'm not pissed off by those observations. Some of them are good, in fact. But how can anyone who knows the term "Pauli exclusion principle" think that a grown person is a fermion?

You and your clone, you and your identical twin, you and the other-you from an alternate time-line. They could all happily co-exist. The Pauli Exclusion principle doesn't have anything to say on the matter.

Now, if you'd referenced the Blinovitch Limitation Effect? That would have been very geeky.

that's why they have a season 2. It's called entertainment, and not to be mistaken w/ true science. You want theorems and sech', watch the science channel. As for me, I'll enjoy the new "fun" stuff that JJ. and company send us in the fall, until it doesn't entertain.

It seems to me that a former President Kennedy (Was it Jack, Bobby, or Ted? Hard to tell from the picture. I think it was Ted.) would be a game changer. At least so far as there being a President Obama.
The Wall Street closure would seem to indicate that 9.11.2001 was moved up to May 2009. Unless Al Queda passed on New York for DC or some other major city in that year.

    by elpaw

If you're going to be a knob, at least get your facts right. Identical fermion applies to any fermion, e.g. electron. Any electron. Not just "the electron on a strand of protein in William Bell's pancreas from one specific universe". And it says they can't occupy the same state, not the same universe. Which means that electron can't be in the s orbital around the nucleus if there are already two there (spin up and down - different states). Etc. It doesn't say that William Bell cannot coexist in another universe.

When he said he was certain the Action Figure had a mark on a different side that's when I thought he's from Dimension X and original Peter died in the water. Seems I remeber the big hyped up STG that Nimoy guest starred in where he showed up in the last 30 seconds and delivers his one line-at least then I only had to wait a week for the payoff, but still-this is the sort of thing that makes me lose interest in a show and Fringe has lost me as a veiwer(not that that's a big thing in the grand scheme of things)-it probably wouldn't have killed anyone to actually have Nimoy throw out about five minutes of exposition, assuming things are that thought out on this show(which it probably isn't)-a good idea may be to have the sub that left the island last week sail thru one of these shimmering windows and end up docking in Boston Harbor-Agent Dunham and Sawyer-i'd pay money for that...lol...

But physically, those weren't really the same Spocks, cuz over time so much of your cells die and are replaced that Old Spock likely no longer has the same exact structure as young Spock. Plus, it's fiction, dammit. And you're assuming this Pablo Picasso theorem, or whatever it is, is 100% factual. Scientific theories change and are disproven all the time. Obviously, this alternate universe is something most scientists are unaware of, so it likely has properties they have yet to understand.

Youre all such babies. And jdolph is just a moron. You're quitting because they ended the season with a teaser scene, instead of giving you "give minutes of exposition" WTF? You want there to be nothing to have you waiting for fall? That's how season finales work. Don't watch Fringe, pal, for all your dumbass reasons. Everybody else is just going to keep enjoying the entertaining fiction. "This isn't realistic, science dictates this..." blah blah. A fermion is any sub-atomic particle which obeys Fermi-Dirac statistics; Electrons, for example.

It's as 100% factual as it's possible to be.

If the alternate universe didn't have the Pauli Exclusion Principle, complex atoms couldn't exist.

I'm not sure if they ever specifically said the W. Bell from our universe went to the other side. Only that W. Bell was in the other dimension. So maybe the Bell from our side is dead and the other dimension Bell has been runnin the show. It would explain why he would leave everything he built while running from Jones. Maybe he didn't. Dunno. Just a thought.

I'm going to be very interested to see more about the "observer" race. I thought it was interesting that he said "we are not supposed to interfere." Wonder if they are from another reality or planet or both. Also, with both Oliva's and Peter's childhood issues now set-up they need to reverse the course on the stand-alone vs. on-going storyline ratio. Finally, are we betting that the reason Nina Sharp has a robotic arm is that at one point it got caught in the "window" while moving back and forth between realities?

OK, so I stuck with Fringe through the virus that freezes people like resin, the virus that closes skin over every orifice, the teleportation, the bat-werewolf, the spontaneous combustion, yada yada yada. But that New York Post in the alternate universe has the Boston Celtics sweeping the Finals with the (deceased in our world) Len Bias winning the MVP award. If he was born the same date as our Len Bias, that would mean he was named Finals MVP at the AGE OF 45! Preposterous! Not even Jordan or Gretzky pulled that off. They've lost me with such an egregious leap from reality. I mean, a 45-year-old MVP of the Finals. Peeshaw...

    LOL Blinovitch!
While I think your comment to Bizarro Jerry substantiates my postulation re: Pauli Principle ("If the alternate universe didn't have the Pauli Exclusion Principle, complex atoms couldn't exist." Isn't that the case for all matter?), you've piqued my curiosity re: what is it these days that satisfies the discerning Sci Fi fan's palate?
While I agree the Time Pimps assertion that these are "fictional experiments mixed with tiny doses of reality to make it fun and watchable", where's the reality? Is it sub-atomic (therefore invisible to the naked eye), too?
I also agree w/ his assertion that there's nothing wrong w/ teaser finales, if they're done well. ST:TNG's "Best of Both Worlds" is a perfect example.

PS: Since I'm not as familiar w/ the show as so many posters, could the fact that Walter swiped (alternate universe) Peter from another universe have something to do w/ why he's so kookoo bananas?

knowing that there's 3 HOURS OF LOST makes me giddy

    by turketron_2

Even though the first hour is a recap, it's nice to know that for 3 hours my TV will be inundated with awesomeness.
Last night's Fringe was great. I liked last week's episode more, but this was a good finale. Many guessed the twist about Peter a while back, but the Twin Towers twist was really cool. I was actually thinking about them when they showed the shot of the New York skyline while Olivia was on her journey to meet Bell. I expect things to be ramped up next year and for Fringe to really hit its stride. There's so many storytelling opportunities with the existence of alternate realities... I would love to see alternate reality Astrid, Dunham, and Walter of course (who probably has a bone to pick with Walter Prime for stealing his son). As long as they don't bring the O'Connels and the Kromags into the show, all will be good. (I liked Sliders, but I hear it went to shit when it moved to SciFi channel). BTW, Bell's secretary was BONERLICIOUS.

That bugged me also, as did "Former President Kennedy speaks to UN". To me that photo looked like JFK, which means he'd be 92. That did not look like the photo of a 92 year old.

The only thing I can think of is that the "slight" difference in this reality could mean longer lifespans for human beings? A slower aging process because of some new technology or medicine we don't have?

Interesting that the effect has been used like crazy on Fringe and Star Trek, but I don't think I've ever seen it used on Lost. I remember early on in Fringe some talkbacker(s?) would constantly bring up the weird blue light effect and ask if it meant anything or if anyone else saw it.

    awesome finale!

    by the__natural74

Such a great show! I knew something was up w/ Peter, but wasn't expecting that.
BTW, I love Agent Dunham! I'm a sucker for kick-ass chicks (Buffy, Nikita, Syd, Max, etc.) and Dunham reached that coolness for me when she was abducted earlier in the season. I realized then that I cared for her character, but then she fights her captors and escapes on her own to make me LOVE her! haha! And yes, I'll gladly see more scenes of her in Walter's water chamber next season!
I'm an old X-phile, so 'Fringe' has filled a nice void for me. And I haven't considered it a rip-off despite some obvious similarities. But you also get those great lines from the cast that make you laugh out loud, while "Mulder's" jokes were often much more subtle.
maelstrom_ZERO was spot-on..."What are you doing here?" - "We're trying to plug a hole in the universe" !! Another classic Walter line!
Count me on the side that Nimoy wasn't a spoiler. I heard about that story everywhere...it's casting news. People are treating it like "Spock" was introduced into the 'Fringe' universe or something. Hell, his name was in the opening credits as special guest star.
MASSIVE DYNAMIC. What a great name!

Not sure yet what I feel about the alternate reality, but what I will say is the Peter death brings up some interesting dilemmas. Walter basically stole Peter from the alternate reality Walter because he couldn’t deal with his death. That’s pretty messed up if you think about it. So Walter in the alternate reality had to deal with everything normal Walter couldn’t. I think it would be awesome if Peter ends up in that alternate reality and meets a non-insane COO of Massive Dynamic Walter who had his son stolen from him.

    by made_in_england

is that its not different enough given all the alternate events over the years - so over there is another version of everyone we know in the show right, but if kennedy was never assassinated then that would've made their reality's last 50 years sooo different from ours that surely broyles, dunham and co would never have been born? god knows what other differences there are, maybe they never had a hitler or a jesus, who knows?!

i dont mind alternate worlds as long as they're radically different - thats whats always bugged me about the Mirror, Mirror universe on trek - a whole history of alternate events and we still get the same people looking exactly the same (save for an evil beard or two) in more or less the same situations as in our reality... its just not right.

For one, I don't think there is only one alternate reality. The Observer said "There is more than one of everything" instead of "there are two of everything". Those statements obviously mean two things and tell us two things. So I took away from it that there are many alternate realities.

Secondably...I saw someone somewhere post that you have to think of realities stacked one on top of the other and you can only get to the realities that are next to yours. maybe it also means that the next reality is a little different, and the next one after that a little more and so on and so forth until you're at a reality that is wildly different than yours.

You mentioned that JJ and Co. know that Torv is the soft spot in Fringe. Was there an article you read? I would love to hear that they're going to give her acting lessons or something. I watched her really carefully during this finale and she really cannot act. She delivers all her lines with the same deadpan almost monotone voice with a blank expression. There are a few times her expression changes, but rarely. And you know, I love kickass women too, I like a good strong female role model, but Anna Torv is so deadpan. She might be good in a straight up drama, but when she's talking about Deja Vu' and alternate realities, it's like she talking about the weather or something. Other than Anna Torv's complete inability to act, I thought this finale was incredible, and I guessed Peter was from the other dimension when Walter said "...he'd lost something precious" and I went WHOA, he took Peter from the alternate reality, then when Walter put the coin on the grave I knew it was Peters. How freaky was that? And a totally cool ending. Maybe over the break they'll do something about Anna, work on her emoting or something. I wouldn't mind so much if she was more of a minor character. John Noble is such an incredible actor and put so much into Walter it makes Anna look even worse.

Smaller headlines read, "Former President Kennedy addresses UN"(it also had a gray haired photo of JFK) and "Celtics sweep! Len Bias MVP"

For those of you not old enough to remember who Len Bias was, he drafted by Boston and celebrated by going to a party that night and ODing on cocaine. Also, that was 1986, so in real time he would be 46 years old. A wee bit old to hoop it up and be the MVP, I think. Do we age slower in the alternate world? I didn't read something specific, I'm only speculating, but when the almighty Abrams says that they are going to focus on "the characters strengths" in the second season, I think that is code for, we are going to spread the time each character gets more evenly. You and I have been in agreement about this all season. Your perspective is all the more important because I don't think there are many women (sadly) on these forums - that is why half of the hoards of Torv defenders focus on how "hot" she is (also a debatable point, but, more importantly, shouldn't matter on a show like this).

I did talk with a guy who lives in my neighborhood who played a villain on one ep who said that the consensus of the cast and crew was that she was a poor actress with poor material to work with. The material has improved, but that is all, imho.

in any event, i think the guys who write shows, for better or worse, know what is being said in talkbacks on sites such as this one; especially shows that are in trouble or in their first season.

I fully agree with you about the ending and I don't see why this show can't be more of an ensemble piece like lost. I actually think most shows suffer from focusing too much on a lead - how interesting can one character be?

I also think this show will take off in the second season (as I think lost did) and be less of the x files clone most feared it would remain. The final shots of peter's grave and the wtc open up a world of very cool opportunities.
i'd like to see noble get an emmy - really refreshing to have strange, well written, well acted character to watch.

"what is it these days that satisfies the discerning Sci Fi fan's palate?"

No idea. I think there's a larger diversity amongst the SF fans these days, since we're living in the "future". iPhones, wireless networking, video calling, virtual reality headsets, the Wii, robot dogs, ... I mean, for myself, I'd rate shows like Babylon 5, DS9, early BSG, early X-Files, Season 2 of Millennium. Didn't like the new Trek movie. Didn't like the way BSG wound up. Love the new Doctor Who's (except for anything written by Russel Davies).

If there was a common thread in what I like in my SF, it's that it doesn't contradict *known* science. You want to tell me that parallel worlds are the cause of deja vu? Okay, I'll buy it. You want to tell me that you can randomly land a tiny space probe on a planet, and land within walking distance of the one person in the universe who can help you? I *might* buy that sort of co-incidence *once*. If your story relies on stuff like that, I'll pass. And yet, just watch as Trek makes 150 million easy.

"could the fact that Walter swiped (alternate universe) Peter from another universe have something to do w/ why he's so kookoo bananas?"

Possibly. Though I tend to think he was committed because of the accident in the lab (where someone died) and to be honest, once a sane person goes into an institution, they quickly become cuckoo-bananas. Our modern day mental care facilities are a tiny step above drilling holes in your head to let the demons out.

slkboxrman, you seem slow so I'll clear this up for you...

    by cant_stop_yawning2

Uh, dude, I have been saying not only that she is a lousy actress, but that her character is poorly written, the ENTIRE SEASON. Check every talkback on Fringe going back and you will see my posts (and AlykatD's and many others) complaining that she is the weak link in the show. She has 4 facial expressions and the writers make her humorless and dull.
And yes, there is a guy who lives literally around the corner from me who played the villain for one episode earlier this season - his name is Chris Eigeman - the ep was called "The Cure" and yes, it is up on IMDB so you can check it out (he is an underrated actor by the way - everyone should check out a flick he was in called "Barcelona"). I live in New York City - many actor's liver here. (Gabriel Byrne lives around the other corner. Feel free to stop by Brooklyn Heights Deli any given morning you will probably see him crossing the street to get a coffee at Tazza. Nothing to get excited about, just a fact of the city.)
I don't know Eigeman well, but we were chatting at the pub up the street one night and I asked him if he would be a recurring character and he said no. He also said Torv was wooden as an actress and that there was general agreement amongst cast and crew on this point. My reason for bringing it up isn't that it matters what I or some random actor thinks of her, but if the cast and crew think she is a drag on the project, (and, yes, this is hearsay) then jj & co. might take steps to downgrade her character or get her an acting coach or do something to make her more interesting.
My theory is that Torv is Rupert Murdoch's niece and that is why she is on the show. I'll put it to you this way - check out her cv, ever see any of the stuff she has done in the past? Ever hear of her before? Little strange to pull your lead from nowhere on an expensive high profile show like this, isn't it?

    by cant_stop_yawning2

I didn't remember that, but there was that whole thing about the lake. Anyone remember, when they were mapping out the pattern events how old the oldest event was (the one at the lake)? Was it about the age Peter is now (or close to it)? So Walter sneaks to the other universe, grabs the kid, and lands in the lake on the way back. The observer enters, pulls them out, end of story.
Anyone else think it was weird out happy Blair Brown was to see Peter when she came to the lab?

muzzle said: "I think it would be awesome if Peter ends up in that alternate reality and meets a non-insane COO of Massive Dynamic Walter who had his son stolen from him." Dude, you're right on. I KNOW that's going to happen, and that's the pro and con of this alternate reality. Cool concept yes, but will be VERY predictable story arcs which equals boring. One thing I hate is an actor "acting" like a different character -- like when an actor becomes "possessed" -- nails on chalkboard for me. lol. Please don't go down this path.

medicinaluser - Completely agree on Jones

    by cant_stop_yawning2

That dude was the coolest villain they had this season and they didn't spend nearly enough time on him. I really figured they were planning on just missing him and then starting up next season tracking him down in Bell's universe.

On Torv, the scene where she interrogates Jones in the german prison was a perfect example of a really good actor going up against a lousy one.

I wonder whether, given the time they spent on him (and the fact that they had already done the frankly weak "body cut in half by the closing portal" thing earlier in the show) whether they might not bring his alternate universe version back because, as you pointed out, they never explained why he was going to such lengths to get to Bell. Also, Bell's cyborg proxy wouldn't say much about it either, just that it was an "internal matter".

I'm all for dumping Torv in the second season. Why not? Lost kills someone every other episode and I really don't envision legions of Torv fans tuning out in protest. Walter is the soul of the show anyway.

Still like a woman in the lead, just not this one.

    Good&Crazy v. Evil&Sane Walter = awful

    by cant_stop_yawning2

ang_lee - that storyline you describe sounds really plausible to me and I can just hear abrams and co. defending the move by saying "yes, but see, that's why we got such a great actor like noble - he can really pull it off." but you are utterly on target: it will be lame every step from that point forward for two or three seasons (I won't know because I will have stopped watching). It will be a long tiresome arc and predictable in every way.
That is really my whole fear about the entire ending - it has real promise, but it opens the door to moronic reality hopping w/ good and evil and neutral and whatever everyone and that will suck outright.

but i've been reading that alot of people been complaining about the time discrepancies with Len Bias having to be in his mid 40s to win the MVP and Kennedy would have been in his 90s but a thought hit me. IF Bell lives in that world, than maybe all the technology he is getting rich off of in this universe and if the technology is better as seen by Nina Sharp's arm than maybe people can live longer and in better health more easily.

Well it would seem the guy playing Jones is going to be on another show so perhaps they had no choice but to get rid of the character the manner in which they did.Or maybe the other gig was taken after he got done on Fringe.Regardless they dropped the ball offing him in such a manner and your right it wasnt even all that shocking as we had already seen a similar death earlier.I cant dwell on Torv for too long she is doing her best I guess its just that when even the Lab chick Astrid acts her out of every scene (and shes hardly in it as much) then you know your actual lead actress needs to step up or be replaced. One final thing Noble actually has a pretty hot daughter, am sure she was playing the secretary right at the end?

    by the colonel

I considered mentioning that, that Bell's advanced tech could prolong health and athleticism to make an elderly president or middle-aged basketball player effective far past today's standards, but if Bias has some kind of robotic arm like Nina Sharp, then that's worse than steroids! NO HALL OF FAME FOR BIONIC ATHLETES!!!!!!!!!!

    Good vs Bad Walter?

    by v'shael

Yeah, it sounds like an over-used scifi idea. But here's the thing. If the two worlds are on the verge of destruction, and only one can survive, it makes sense that the big brains on both worlds would be attacking each other.

The events we call "The Pattern" are attacks on Earth-Prime by the other Earth.
And from what Olivia has seen, we're either winning (thanks to Massive Dynamic and Bell) or their world is being damaged more by the soft-spots and imminent collision of the two worlds.
Oh, and since Walter-Prime might have been responsible for the whole mess in the first place, by stealing Peter, why isn't he the "evil" Walter? :)

    Really good theories

    by seanmiller

After reading this talkback I am really excited for season 2. I like everyone's theories and it makes the show even more awesome. I actually want to go back and re-watch the first season to catch all the references to Peter being from another dimension that I totally missed the first time. Also, put me in the camp that thinks the other dimension has advanced tech/science that allows for prolonged life span and Nina's arm. Especially, since the creator's said that Torv did not go back in time. Oh yeah, I like Anna Torv. She did this thing in the scene with the guy from the Wire when he gets a phone call where she kind of kicked her leg out. It was suddle but showed some personality.

    Yawning, Torv and Fringe Goodness

    by champoozie_jones

I'd have to agree with you 100%. I've made similar comments myself about Torv on other Fringe talkbacks. In my opinion she is a huge drag on the show and she does not have nearly enough charisma that a lead for a show like this (or any show for that matter) needs. If it wasn't for Noble the show would be unwatchable. The casting of Noble was as brilliant as the casting of Torv was mistaken.

It's really a mystery to me how she got the role. I guess actors with only a few expressions and a woodenness that would make the Tin-man drool are in these days. Seriously people, go back and watch her body language in the eps.

I also felt that the way Jones' character was offed seemed a bit anti-climatic and disappointing.

I had guessed about half way through that Peter was other-dimension Peter but even though they pretty much telegraphed it, I thought it was a great arc for the character.

Though Noble has always done such an awesome job of presenting a character that is at once vulnerable and driven, I thought he really did a great job in this episode. His character is really one of the best on television of any show. I’d be more than happy to watch a show that was called the Walter and Cow Show, with special guest Astrid.

    Big Problem, Alt. Reality-Wise

    by deandome

It's clear that during the shifts between realities, the LOCATION remains constant. They need to build the portals in particular spots...the truck is on the same road when it shifts. So how on earth (any version) could Torv end up in the WTC when the elevator she was on clearly wasn't in the WTC's footprint (which is still a deep hole)?

I haven't liked a show this much since Supernatural. I think Torv is great as agent Dunham. Since Sarah Connor was canned, she is now my new fav heroine. Hopefully JJ ignores the internet minority and doesn't try to turn her into your typical "Hot Mess Heroine"

    Hot Mess Heroine

    by champoozie_jones

Not sure what a Hot Mess Herione is, though it does make me smile. Honestly, I liked that Torv was cast at first, you know, until I realized how brain-numbingly boring she was. Originally I was glad she was cast because she wasn't the typical network super-model type that looked like anything but an FBI agent. It's not that she's not a super-model that some folks are having a problem with. It's just that she's terrible in her role. No matter how many scenes of her at home with her lovable sister and niece that JJ throws in, it doesn't help the fact at all.

You say "I think Torv is great as agent Dunham" and then mention "Man we need something to soften her up without having to do any real character work" So which is it...you think she is great or that shes awful and the network know this and are trying everything in there power to make her more likable without actually getting her to do much work (she cant as her acting sucks rabid dog dick).I also want to add its hardly a minority...well it wasnt a minority when she was on the BBC show and it isnt now.Keep justifying it as those who call her out on what she thinks passes for acting are just wrong...well its a different show but again she is the weak link...the reason being she cannot act.

    Hot, Blonde Australian v4.0

    by deandome

Poppy Montgomery/Without a Trace...Yvonne Strzechowski/Chuck...Emilie de Ravin/Lost...Anna Torv/Fringe. It's like the Aussies have some kind of hot-blonde-with straight-blonde-hair-most-of-which-play-Americans factory of something. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just find it curious that they can't find any of those over here. Anna & Poppy are like clones or something, even the voices.

    by anthony w

I was making fun of the fact that I hated the neice and sister and that they were put there to try to fit into what a coked up executive THINKS a female character should do, play with kids and talk about men.

This is the FULL qoute that you chopped up in a weak attempt to make a point. I used caps to show you the part that you left out on purpose.."IT WAS ALMOST LIKE A COKED UP NETWORK EXECUTIVE was like "Man we need something to soften her up without having to do any real character work. I know, have her sister visit with her brat and then toss in some divorce stuff."

See how it changes when you use the FULL QOUTE? Don't sweat it. I forgive you. It's the least I can do for you, with you being in the minority and all... :)

Every board I see this show discussed on mentions her lack of acting talent, it was the same for the BBC show.We need to replace her with Astrid or just kill her off altogether and have Charlie take over for a bit until someone else gets brought in.I am hopeful she will be given the axe and then coked up network execs wont have to worry about bringing in minor characters to make her more likable or as you put it "without having to do any real character work" herself as she is incapable of doing so.Do you think the Cow could do a better job?

So Peter is actually alternate reality Peter.

    by cotton mcknight

My assumption is that the original Peter died after being very sick, so walter cooked up that device to take another Peter from another reality. That would explain why he didn't remember the coin collection. Interesting stuff indeed.

I figured the "very complicated" response implied..

    by cotton mcknight

that there was more to this alternate reality stuff that Olivia knew about. Which in part explains how the world she was at the WTC. Also remember that she was going down in the elevator, yet she was on the top floor when she got out. Clearly that was intentional. In other words, I don't think the WTC is a plot hole or oversight.

indeed. When she was flashing between the two universe in that lift, there were shots where she was surrounded with people.

She was alone in the prime universe. She was alone in Bells universe. Where was she when she was surrounded by people?

My suspicion is that she went to the same building in Bells universe, but then was teleported to the WTC within Bells universe.

So what is the deal with Peter?

    by cotton mcknight

Does anyone remember the episode where Peter had the altercation with the Observer? Unfortunately I don't remember all of the details and I am thinking that I REALLY need to watch that episode again. Someone suggested in another discussion that young Peter died in a car crash? No matter what, I am absolutely sure that Walter was recalling a memory of the "other" Peter being sick and having a coin collection. Another question is, if Peter was indeed taken from an alternate universe, is the Walter from that reality trying to get him back?
