The casting of OSMOSIS JONES

Published at:  Aug 03, 1999 5:33:27 AM CDT

Alright folks, now that THE IRON GIANT is upon us, we'll have to begin focusing our gaze on the next WB animated film, OSMOSIS JONES, so I figure I'll go ahead and break some initial casting notes, Osmosis Jones -- Chris Rock,
Drix -- David Hyde Pierce and The Chief -- Joel Silver have been cast. Still waiting on more voice casting as well as some nice good clean shots of what some of the characters will look like on this very cool, yet strange sounding project. Until I hear more, this is Harry out.

David Hyde Pierce cracks me up

    by the graduate

Have you seen FRASIER? Ha! I love his facial expressions, and he gets some really funny dialogue (supposedly there was no "brother" character until Pierce auditioned). I liked his work as the stick bug in A BUG'S LIFE, though again it was very similar to his Niles Crane character. Oh, to the person above who asked about this project: I don't remember exactly, but it's an animated story which takes place inside the human body, where the characters are blood cells and viruses and stuff. Really quirky. Harry's run several articles that you can run a search for, or you can check out www.staytooned.com which I know has a section on this one.

    The Fresh Prince

I read somewhere that Will Smith was involved in this project, too. Is he producing or does he have a voive-over role?

    The Director is The BEST

    by sammy glick

Don't know if it's been mentioned before, but the Director of Osmosis is Tom Sito. This virtually guarantees that this will be an extremely funny film!! Tom is one of the coolest people in Animation here in Hollyweird; his story work is legendary. Another interesting note is that the production will be done in the old Sherman Oaks Galleria. Think you're not familiar with this place? Think again if you've seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High. It's the mall with the movie theater and food court where several of the characters work. The Galleria is in the midst of being converted from retail to office spaces, with the movie theater being renovated and slated to reopen in 2000.

David Hyde Pierce shouldn't be voice acting

    by 0din

It's not that David Hyde Pierce isn't a wonderful voice actor. He did good things in A Bug's Life, and he can express a wide range of emotion (and get plenty of laughs) with his voice. What frustrates me, though, is that Pierce is the most talented *physical comedy* actor on television today, and yet his movie career doesn't take advantage of those skills.

Last week's "Frasier" rerun was the Valentine's Day episode, where Niles' perfectionism while getting ready for a date gets the better of him. After the setup, Pierce carries the entire scene *without dialogue* in a tour de force of pratfalls and comic reactions, from ironing his pants to not running with scissors to fainting at the sight of blood. Pierce is a master of double takes and facial expressions, and frequently gets laughs for his co-stars by how he reacts to their lines.

I'm sure Pierce will be an asset to Osmosis Jones, and obviously he can still get laughs from the recording studio. But I really wish he could find a movie role that showcased his gift for physical comedy.

    To DeVore and 0din

    by kiwi-1

DeVore- I too heard the story about there being no Niles character. But, the version I heard did not have him auditioning. What I heard was just that one of the people in charge saw David Hyde Pierce performing somewhere, decided he looked and sounded just like a younger Frasier, and the role was developed from there. And to 0din - have to agree regarding the Valentines Day episode. I just saw it on Monday night (first run in NZ) and my gosh did I adore that sequence. The best part was that it was so predictable. You could see the set-up - the burning pants, the spilled flammable liquid, etc, but you laughed anyway, just because of his expressions. The guy has a definate talent.

Chris Rock, Chirs Tucker - they're both clones.
