‘So Help Me God I Will Lay You Down Right Here Right Now!!’ Penultimate 24!!

Published at:  May 11, 2009 4:13:51 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Daughter Kim, almost old enough now to be a cougar herself, is back tonight. And it looks like Jack catches up with Tony.

Will Tony explain that Larry Moss was actually a very bad man who deserved to die? Or will Jack end Tony for good this week?

The first 18 episodes of the season were sharp, but I have not been feeling the love these past three hours.

Fox says:

Innocent lives remain in the line of fire as this terrifying day draws to a close. Jack is faced with an unthinkable situation while his perpetually imperiled daughter, Kim (guest star Cuthbert), gets involved. Meanwhile, the imminent threat stokes the heated rivalry between Chloe and Janis. Guest Cast: Jon Voight as Jonas Hodges; Elisha Cuthbert as Kim Bauer; Sprague Grayden as Olivia Taylor; Glenn Morshower as Aaron Pierce; Will Patton as Alan Wilson; Rafi Gavron as Hamid Al-Zarian; Omid Abtahi as Jibraan Al-Zarian.

Unthinkable situation?

Next week brings the two-hour season finale.

9 p.m. Monday. Fox.

...have been just fine. Hodge's demise was handled excellently, and I'm loving the situation with the president's daughter. She is in hot, hot water. Tony's actions continue to terrify and astound. The show has not let up with the tension or the pacing. This is shaping up as one of the best seasons of 24.

the creators would have a lot of balls and need to be applauded if they end it with Jack dying as long as it is handled well. But seriously that would be a complete shock to everyone watching if it ended with his death. P.S. These talkbacks need an edit button.

    by throwmetheidol

They peaked in the middle. Nothing in recent weeks is as dangerous or over the top as terrorists in the White House with a knife to the president's throat threatening to kill her life on worldwide camera. And the shootouts before and after. After that, who cares about some silly cannister or who Voight throws over a balcony.

    Aside from the last 3...

    by captain hollywood

This season has been more than a step up above last season. As "underwhelming" as the last three have been it's still better than season 6 too.

The problem with the whole "Conspiracy syndicate" plot is that 24 hasn't done it well since ... ever. Season 2 had one that went unexplained (aside from the game) and Season 5 had one that resulted in it being Jack's family- which is dumb in every way. If they truly can give this conspiracy a satisfying conclusion (even if it's next season) I'll be happy.

House and Booth (on Bones) are both having hallucinations. The Numb3rs gang really could've used the Criminal Minds gang a couple weeks back. Speaking of Criminal Minds, it looks like Reid might be exposed to a bioweapon just like Jack Bauer this week. And finally, Amita on Numb3rs has been kidnapped by Gaius Baltar's harem. No, I am not kidding you.

    A Plea for Reaper

    by chrth

A couple weeks back, I made the comment that I'd choose Better Off Ted over Reaper if I could only save one. Well I was wrong. The last few Reapers have been great. More importantly, there's a philosophical depth to this show that goes light years beyond anything else on TV. I mean seriously: a gay demon got back into Heaven by following a mindset of completing minor good works in opposition to the Devil. How the hell has the Southern Baptist Convention not attacked this show yet?!?

    by ash0k

I like 24... but imo the writers seriously need to do a 24 episode season that:

    1) Focuses on a low profile, tightly written personal story.

    2) Does not lead up to a terrorist plotting a diabolical scheme

    3) Does not involve "people" who are part of a "big" conspiracy

Right now, 24 is a good show. S7 is a huge improvement from the mediocre S6. But, if the writer's would quit using lazy writing technique's stolen from the S1-S6 playbooks, 24 could be not just a good show, but a great one.

In my opinion, this has been the best season in years. And annoying as she may be, Taylor has been the strongest president since proto-Obama (Palmer). I'm willing to lay odds that it was actually Pierce that blew up Hodges' car. Why else would they show Pierce's reaction to the daughter's offhand comment about killing Hodges on the 'previously on.' And assassins (I would imagine) wouldn't usually do their job without payment first. And um, no, Kim is NOT old enough to be a cougar. She's still in her 20s, for chrissakes.

    by mickguinness

OK Herc, I am going to rock you with a little Sasha Mitchell knowledge from Kickboxer 2: The Road Back. Remember when he says you shouldn't swear all the time to the little kid because then your words lose their meaning? Yeah? STOP USING PENULTIMATE! I can't even count the number of times I have seen that word used on this site in recent weeks. We know what it means, now please use a different word once and a while. I don't mean to be a dick or nitpick, and I know this is not a straight news site. But for someone who has a background in Journalism, seeing the same word passed around and used over and over again like Wesley Snipes' bad checks, it drives me batshit.

BTW, I've liked this season a lot and am looking forward to the remaining eps.

    by vvrinne

As far as I know they are already signed for S8 and it's supposed to start shooting during the summer (which is why the headbutting thing is a real problem).

Considering this it seems kinda unlikely that Jack is going to die during this season. I'm thinking that Tony will pull a magic cure out of his ass so that Jack won't put him down.

They could learn something from Harper's Island

    by garbageman33

I'm not saying Harper's Island is a better show than 24. Far from it. But what it does have going for it is a clever conceit that's easy to explain. If someone had never seen the show before, all you'd have to do is tell them, "They're having a wedding on an island where a serial killer once went on a rampage. Every week, another person gets killed. Anyone could be a victim. And everyone is a suspect". At its best, 24 works the same way. but lately, it's become far too contrived. Just try explaining it in a nutshell. "Um, well, Tony was bad, then we realized he was just pretending to be bad, but then, he really was bad. For real, this time. And now, he's gonna use this device that he wanted all along. But first, he has to find some muslims..." In the future, keep it simple, stupid. And maybe limit the number of subplots disguised by what initially seemed like the big plot.

    This season is awful

    by darth_valinorean

... way too many coincidences and contrived plots. Cougar Kim Bauer sits with the 'villains' - how damn convenient; Larry Moss - first you hate him so he can die and you feel conflicted. Plot construction 101; Bauer - can/should I torture or not torture - creation of conflict, but to the detriment of the character developmentt; Bauer - give him dementia and senility as well since his abilities resurface when convenient and then he coughs and winces to remind us he is dying; and back from the dead Tony, please - I've always liked him till this season. Did you guys seriously run out of villains? Same expression for 24 hrs! I can't even go through the nonsense of the First Daughter! SHE IS NOT SHERRI PALMER! Please.. this woman is a whiny annoyance! I don't understand why folks like this season. This is as bad, although not worse than the hairy turd that was Superman Returns

It's not the Worst Season by a long shot.

    by catvutt

But it may be the most frustratingly bi-polar, and easily the one that's most irritated me as of now. Season 6 just sucked, but it sucked pretty early on...If you start eating a crap sammich, by the time you finish it, you're no more pissed off than you were when you started. But when you start eating an awesome Ruben on perfectly toasted Rye with just the right amount of kraut and dressing, and the last couple of bites are just burnt bread and some crunchy shit that fell off of some fried clams, you're going to be pretty fucking pissed off.
Not to mention, it's prompting me to make really awful analogies, and that's never good for anybody.

    following Heroes' lead

    by maxwell's hammer

If they did, they'd have Kim and Jack and Tony all go into a hotel room while Freckles waited outside, then you'd hear lots of gunshots and furniture breaking, the door would open, Jack would exit in tears, Kim would say: "that was the most kick-ass rescue ever, Dad!!", then Freckles would look in the room and see Tony hanging dead by his tie form the ceiling fan.

Now THAT'S how you end a hit show finale!

When I saw that they were going to kidap Kim yet again I have to say it really annoyed me to know end. It just seems so lazy. I really can't believe they couldn't come up with something better. I'm still pissed that Tony is a bad guy. I haven't gotten over THAT yet either, and so far what they HAVE done with him as said bad guy, has been a waste and complete disappointment. Hopefully the writers can pull off a miracle and come up with something truely spectacular for the last 2 hours. I'm hopeful, but not overly so.

But now I'm actually interested in the season finale, now that they got this lame ass canister bullshit out of the way. And how is it at all improbable that Kim is in danger? They CLEARLY showed Tony overhearing Moss talk about Kim coming to DC to visit Jack earlier, he would have put a backup plan to keep an eye on her in case he needed her for any future contingency right then. I can't believe I'm actually defending a plot point on the show but you people have it all backwards. During the completely improbable white house invasion everyone was going on about how great it is and now that it actually is personal (like they claim every new season is going to be in the beginning) and not some new bullshit bomb you people are bitching. I don't know what you want from the show, but I think it's telling that during season 1 when it was actually a smart show on par with something like the sopranos it had low ratings and during season 4, with the lame ass marwan plots every couple of episodes ratings shot through the roof the dumber the show got.

    House Season Finale

    by gordon bombay

Was amazing! How this show doesn't get a weekly talkback but shit like Dollhouse does, I will never know. 24 better go out with a bang to save the season also. It is still savable though. The first 18-19 were that good.

    24's Biggest Problem....

    by rob0729

It has always been that they cannot keep the tention going consistently over a 24 episode season. Even in it's best years, 24 has had at least a 2-3 episode lull where the quality just isn't up to par. Unfortunately for this season, it is is coming after the 20th hour.
Granted it too late in the game to change the formula especially with only one season left (supposably). I always felt they treat the resolution of every story arch too quick to resolve. Whether they are stupid ones (Kim and the Cougar) or more interesting ones that when they derail they hurt the pace of the season (killing Jack's brother too quickly, the whole Juma and Hodges storylines, Tony's first bad guy turn at the start of the season). I do wish the writershad a better sense of what worked and wouldn't rush to resolve those storylines.

With all the major issues pretty much resolved, we are now left with a rather pedestrian save Kim story for the finale. Knowing how 24 deals with end of the seasons and the big bad guy pulling all the strings behind the curtain, I wouldn't hold my breathe to see a Will Patten resolution.

    by michaelm

I agree that the show blew its wad w/ episode 19. 20 was pretty good, but 21 and 22 were just boooooring. This, however, was better, and I thought it set up the finale nicely. But really... if the finale delivers, it will go a long way in erasing the last 3 or 4 episodes from our memories. And even if it doesn't, this season will still be better than seasons 3, 4, or 6. There's no touching 1, 2, or 5 at this point.

Great until White House – crap since

    by ignohippo

Seriously, even at its worst this season it still isn't as bad as S6, but it sucks that this started as such a strong season and then went straight down the crapper. The entire storyline with Kim is completely stupid. Let's not save Dad because it may not work and I'll have to watch him die – even though I could still leave at any time, or (wow) go to a different room.
My fear is this stupid conspirency won't get identified and will be the basis for S8...

    by michaelm

I meant to say the show blew its wad w/ ep. 18. 19 was good, 20 and 21 were snoozefests, and tonight's was okay. If I look back at this season and see that 1-18 were great, 19-22 were blah, and 23-24 were great, then I'll be satisfied. And if the finale does suck? Well, at least I got 18 great episodes out of it. Better than the 4 episodes I got before season 6 went to shit.

    by mazzke

Stories that used to be explored across a whole season are now resolved in three episodes max. Look at how many different threats happened this season alone. It's absurd. As a result, there's absolutely no build-up, no tension, no viewer investment and no meaningful twists in the show any more. It's turned into a shallow caricature of what it once was. Don't get me wrong. It's still well-made shallow fun, but it's not the classic, trailblazing show that it once was.

for the final 2 episodes. Killing off Kimmers wouldn't have the same shock value as Teri's death at the end of Season 1, so scratch that idea. I'd *like* to think the writers have some big reveal up their sleeve, but if so I'm not expecting a wallop on par with the closing moments of Season 1 or Season 2. Just make it half-decent is all I'm asking.

    At face value...

    by darthcorleone

...I agree making the finale about another Kim rescue is tired. BUT...when it comes to exploring the predominant themes of this season (the morality of torture, whether the ends justify the means, trading one life for thousands, etc.) and interestingly exploiting Jack's character arc, kidnapping Kim is the only way to go, because that's the only thing that provides any truly coercive power over him. I have to wonder about Jack's state of mind at this point (terminally ill, nothing to lose per his own words, already showed a weakness for protecting a single stranger this season at the expense of the "greater good") and whether he might cross a line which we haven't seen him cross before. There is some potentially interesting drama to be mined and new ground to be covered here, if you care about the character Jack Bauer and his evolution over the course of seven seasons. In answer to the question posed, the worst season is still season six - BY FAR.

that shit with Jack & Tony was intense. the focus isn't so much on "oh no! Kim's in trouble!!" but on what that situation will lead to. we're talking about the escape of Tony & Jack possibly having to choose between the life of his daughter & wasting Freckles + a bunch of FBI agents.still don't know what this is leading to. and still don't know the real motivation of Tony. i mean... he's just a bad dude? that's it? he just wanted to kill a bunch of people? there has to be more to it then that. if they just leave it at that then i will be real dissapointed but i'm holding out for a great (and shocking) season finale.

As entertaining as season 1 was, the plot is absolutely retarded. Go back and map that season out plot point by plot point. It doesn't hold up AT ALL. In fact, Television Without Pity did an article about the most ridiculous plotlines in 24 and "Season 1" was at the top of the list. Not saying it isn't great, because it is, but it's not the best example. Season 2 (despite the Kim nonsense) is probably the best single storyline the show ever did. The bomb plot lasted almost the entire day, and the second plot was all about the fallout from the bomb. That season is so underrated.

Gotta agree there, Season 2 has been the best by a long way as long as you ignore the Kim nonsense.... George Mason nosediving with the bomb, Nina Myers getting immunity, CTU getting the shit blown out of it, Kim's boyfriend Miguel with Kung-Fu skills and that great handshake ending.... quality! Although the best scene ever in 24 was when Jack had to put a bullet in Chappelle's head (S4)... this season can't touch that stuff....

They have plenty of cushion if Kiefer spends time at Rikers. Weren't they shooting last time he spent a month in LA County? This episode wasn't that bad; there were 5 verbal smackdowns in the first 30 minutes, 2 on Olivia alone. Cruz Pezuela goes down like a wimp again. Wrapping up the public threat and having Kim in danger was telegraphed long ago. The last shot in the teaser with Rack riding side-saddle gives me hope for next week.

I actually think holding Kim hostage makes more sense this season, because we are dealing with Tony.

Back in season 3, this is the same thing that Tony had to do to save Michelle and he paid for that it seems with his very soul. Playing this card now is smart because Tony is making Jack suffer the way he did. Now you know how I felt and why I did what I did, yknow?

I can forgive it because of the parallel with Tony.

    Good Episode

    by miiike

I actually think last night's episode was good. There were several nice touches, such as (1) the metro cop being in on the plan, (2) Jack slapping Tony around, (3) Jibraan scaring people in the subway by showing the bomb and (4) Agent Pearce being set up to look foolish, but having one-upped the first daughter.

Kim in trouble is of course repetitive, but, as mentioned above, it furthers themes from this year's show. Moreover, I like that she does not even realize that she is in trouble, which is different from prior times.

This has not been the best season, but ok and last night was good.

    Kim

    by mankind

mad_tuffer is spot on. It makes perfect sense to have Kim involved--Tony would have set up that contingency the minute he knew Jack was involved in this day.The thing that doesn't make sense is the same thing that never makes sense on 24--why they didn't make that play earlier. "I know! The plan's been foiled and at this point all that's left is freeing one guy! Now would be a good time to force Jack to comply with us!""Really? We had access to his daughter the whole time? Shouldn't we have used this to stop him from thwarting our canister attack?""Hmm. You're right. I hope they're not showing our dialogue right now.""Don't worry. They're showing some girl in the white house.""Cool. Maybe no one will notice. Never mention this again."They really should start plotting whole seasons in advance.

    Mankind are you STUPID

    by blackjackbauer

holy fuck why would they give a shit about Jacks daughter at all? they didnt give a shit about Jack, let alone know his daughter was in DC until well into the day, when Moss was on the phone with Freckles and Tony overheard him mention Kim. Once he learns that she is here, and he sees that jack has been trouble, the wheels in his head start turning. Remember also, he has as a BROMANCE with bauer, he doesnt wanna hurt his fuckin BRO, bro! the last thing he wanted was jack to come in on this, and he wouldnt want to hurt Kim either. so he played the card late because he HAD TO. he told the Baroness "only do this as a last ditch effort if im captured" or some shit. damn! just cuz you fucks dont get it doesnt mean u have to bitch about it. this is one thing i have learned to hate about your human culture. if you humans dont get something, u bitch adn bitch and bitch. the thought never crosses your mind that you are simply ill equipped to understand the intricacies of a top level fast paced show like this. the little side looks, what they all mean. I GET IT, or course, but Ive been trained in the human condition, and i think the shit is blatant. they literally have close ups of tonys face as a fucking LIGHT BULB SHOWS UP OVER IT and u hear a lil "IDEA!!!" prompt and a fucking cartoon bubble of kims face as well. the fuck is wrong with u got damn idiots? DAMMIT I hate humans.

    Oh yeah...

    by michaelm

I would also like to say how much I enjoyed Jack and Tony's brief smackdown. I'm not the biggest fan of Bernard's, but he was quite good in that scene. First time Tony's seemed human since he went EVIL. I watched the episode. Not quite sure I understand the level of hatred being leveled at it. Sure, it ended w/ another Kimnapping so to speak, but the acting, the emotions... everything was pretty spot on. Definitely not great, but not horrible like some people here are saying. I'm still definitely looking forward to the finale. Despite whether or not you like where the plot is going, you have to admit, this is the first time in a long while that the show has employed character development. The growth of Jack Bauer as a character has been fascinating (he's no longer some stupid Superman ala Season 6), and the destruction of Renee's morality has been equally good.

Well said, sir. That's one of the reasons I enjoy the oft-criticized season 4 so much, because - as preposterous as it was - it still had a lot of my favorite character moments. I hope in the final two hours of this season they take the time to savor the drama they've built between Jack and Tony, Jack and Renee, etc., with some quality scenes. It would be a waste to do otherwise.

Okay, I think I figured it out

    by jubs

I didn't watch the previews for next week, so some of the things I say might be wrong, but fuck it, here goes. I still think Tony is a good guy. The only reason why he wanted to go ahead and use the last remaining canister is because (1) mass producing this bioshit and using it en masse like the power players wanted would be too catastrophic. Using the last remaining canister right away would eliminate that possibility, which leads to (2) Tony's intent was to never actually use the canister. He never wanted to kill thousands of innocents. He WANTED Jack to stop him. He left clues for Jack to figure out that yes, it was Tony who was doing all this, and he wanted to be stopped. Blowing up the building with the FBI in it, lying about the death of his source, using a gun that didn't match the bullet that went through him. Everything he did were subtle clues left for Jack. He knew Jack would piece it together, and he knew Jack was the only one who could stop him and the attack. He wanted Jack to prevent the attack, which he did. Now, this whole Kim kidnap thing. Again, his intent is to not kill Kim. Tony's end game is to figure out who these power players are and go after them. He can't do that behind bars. So he threatens Jack to help him escape, because he still has a job to do. I really think Tony despises himself for betraying jack, but he has to do whatever it takes to bring down this shadowy, powerful, influential group of people. Oh, and him killing Larry? Just look at Tony's face while he was snuffing him out. He's grimacing. He's disgusted with himself. It was killing him inside. He didn't want to do it, but he had to for the sake of continuing his mission. The dude is deep, deep undercover. So who's he working for? Maybe thats a storyline we can explore in season 8, with subtle hints dropped in next weeks season finale. So yeah, there you go. Thats my theory.

Jeff Wincott has quite a few projects in the works. From what I've been told, he has a large part in "Bolden!" that comes out next year & it had a budget of $82million.

What was his hallucination and what was real? Was the sex with Cuddy a hallucination? Was Cutner's suicide hallucination? Was detoxing a hallucination? I was more confused than satisfied with the finale.

    by darthcorleone

Respectfully, I think that is pretty far-fetched, and I still don't understand at all how some of you are clinging to this idea that Tony is still "good." If he truly wanted Jack to stop the attack, why would he have smashed the electronic device that led them to the canister, thus jeopardizing their ability to stop the attack in time?

There's someone on the forums at Imdb.com that explains it somewhat. That is if he's correct anyways. I too felt a bit confused as I really wasn't paying close attention thinking it was kinda over. Definitely left me feeling a little odd to say the least.

Yeah, it is far-fetched, but not entirely impossible when it comes to 24. 24 has a strange habit of pulling crazy, far-fetched things out of their ass (Kim VS. Cougar, Marwan's Houdini escapes in S4, Gael in S3 who used CTU as a supposed base for terrorist operations, but was in fact actually working for CTU in the first place), so I wouldn't be suprised at all if Tony ends up good. As for Tony smashing the device, well... I dunno. I'm sure that'll go unexplained if Tony does come out as a good guy.

Cutner's suicide was real. Sex with Cuddy was a hallucination, detoxicating was a hallucination. He basically spent the who night he was supposedly detoxing poppinng pills and imagining Cuddy being there, having sex etc.

    my two cents

    by yodaismyhomie

First of all, let me just say that for the most part I have enjoyed this season. There have been a couple of lulls, but honestly that is expected (to me anyway). I didn't even mind the last several episodes that so many people hated. But this one annoyed me...first of all, Kim being kidnapped..err...adult-napped....I mean cougar-napped...well that's just stupid. I'm sorry but it was seen a mile away AND is just overplayed...run out of ideas? Oh let's just put Kim's daughter in jeopardy so we can manipulate Jack...again. A better plot device would have been to take Freckles or something...he would have risked his life for her after all she has been through. Also, with everything going on...how the hell did they even set up operatives to hone in on Kim when they didn't even know she was going to be coming until a few hours ago...and last Tony saw Jack he was dying so why would this have been set up...and how did they know her flight and all that? Yes...I know...spies and what not, but seriously? That shouldn't have been planned.

Another thing is that I understand how adrenaline works, and that it can kick in when needed, but how many adrenaline rushes can one man possibly have. Seriously they should have given him adrenaline shots instead of that crap he has...that would be more plausible.

Next, I hope there is a nice showdown between Jack and Tony...and I want it to be like the fight at the end of the first Lethal Weapon...it has to start raining, they should be in a front yard, and it should be brutal...with Freckles doing the Muraugh thing by not letting the cops/FBI stop it.

And last, I know some people still think Tony is good. I was pissed when he was brought back to life...but I let it slide. It was a decent enough plot concept. I was mad that he was a villain though...but forgave it when he became good. However, I think he blew any chance he has of being good now...his actions have gone beyond that of a double agent working for the good guys. If he ends up good again at the end, forget it. I will not watch next season. Let him rot. Oh...and damn the powers that be for bringing him back to life just to make him a bad guy. Shame shame.

They'd better have something up their sleeve to turn the Kim kid

    by henrydalton

I mean, they MUST know that everyone would have seen that coming a mile away and utterly hate it. If they really did put production on hold to write something special, then I'm going to hold out a faint glimmer of hope that they've decided to take one of everyone's pet hates with the show (the Kim constant kidnap storylines) and do some big switcheroo into it being awesome. Like I said, a verrrry faint glimmer.

'to turn the Kim kidnap storyline on its head'

    by henrydalton

was what that was going to be. Thing is, even if they were doing that, they should've started an episode with that before flipping it into something else by the END of the episode, as the pre-clock big twist or something. At least that way you wouldn't have been left with a completely shitty plot for a whole episode. Man, I reallly hope they've got something good up their sleeve...

    Damn Sick and Tired

    by oldnewbie

I damn tired of the “we have your daughter\friend\pet” sword the bad guys keep holding over Jack’s head to get him to do their bidding. In my opinion, Jack ought to either a) let his daughter reap what she has sown since she sought him out or b) fake a seizure and have himself medically removed from the van. Hey, he’s a sick dying man and it would not be outside the realm of possibility. Jack can’t do anything if he’s on a gurney, right? No need then to kill Kim, right?? The bad guys have to implement some other exit strategy for Almeda; like maybe killing him! Or as I just read from henrydalton, maybe Kim can turn the tables and realize her new pals are not who she thinks they are! Whatever, the finale should end with Jack getting cured, getting a medal from the White House, and Tony's cold dead body on a slab.
