Woody Allen's WHATEVER WORKS starring Larry David gets a trailer!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I got to see this flick at ShoWest a few weeks back and let me tell you that I can't believe it's taken this long to get Larry David paired with Woody Allen. I love CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, which has Larry essentially playing a mixture of Woody Allen and Ricky Gervais' David Brent. It would break my heart to find out that Larry David himself is radically different from his comedic persona on that show, actually...
Anyway, WHATEVER WORKS is about an aging intellectual cynic in New York who somehow ends up with the bright-eyed, dull-witted Evan Rachel Wood moving in as a roommate. Their relationship evolves to a crazy level, but I won't go into much detail right now. I may write up a review soon... I never got any official word from the studio as to an embargo, so I'll take silence as consent.
I will say the movie is fucking hilarious and the best Woody Allen comedy for a good long while. You get a good sampling of what the flick is in the new trailer, which has hit Apple.
Click here to watch Larry David break the fourth wall!
Enjoy!

Larry David and Woody Allen--Perfect...
-
I re-watched Love & Death last night, you know his earlier funny stuff. It's great and Quint? I once met someone who had worked with Larry David and I asked them what he was like. Her totally serious reply was "He's just as obnoxious in real life" so, I guess you've got no worries.
-
is fucking ANNOYING!!!!!!!
-
Because I watch every Woody Allen movie anyway. Even if it stars someone who I seriously can't stand, like Larry David. (And of course Scarlett Johansson, who made Allen's movies very difficult for me over the last few years.)
-
for this film. Thank goodness Woody is doing what appears to be his first watchable comedy in a long time.
-
I'm not a huge Woody Allen fan...I stopped with the big interest in his films around 1977...and I wasn't born until 1979...but I will DEFINITELY see this.note to Woody, this is how you get younger audiences. not Scarlett Johansson...unless you want younger swedish audiences.p.s. I don't know what that means.
-
um.. andy millman maybe dude, but larry's nothing like brent. you sure you were watching the right show?
-
Best trailer of the year (after Trek 3).
-
Looks good.. I've not been keen on his other recent work, but this looks at least watchable.
-
Larry David cannot be compared to anyone... except Woody Allen. That's it. There's Woody Allen and Larry David in a class all their own. I love Ricky, but he's no Woody or Larry. Oh, wait, you are comparing the character in this film that Larry plays to the character Ricky played. Oh, ok. But no comparing Larry David to anyone else but Woody Allen. There can be only 2.
-
chess, window, yankees 2nd reference and decorator line made me smirk. as much as i love larry don't think ill watch this. woody allen doesn't do it for me im afraid.
-
I really dont get how Woody Allen keeps putting out movies, when each and everyone is boring and lame crap that no one pays to see. The studio cant keep losing money and think another Woody Allen flick is a good idea, but they somehow keep getting made.
-
Woody Allen's about as boring as the new Star Trek has still shots.
-
Aah, the existential musings, baggin' on religion... good old Woody.
-
Been dying to see this one, talk about a meeting of comedy giants.. Gonna watch it now
-
Laughing out loud at trailers is rare for me, I'm as grumpy as Larry David and usually just complain about how they missed the target, but this looks like it has a chance at actually being very good. I'm so glad Woody got Larry onboard. Is a comedy classic too much to hope for? I want to see this yesterday; Quint you lucky so-and-so... write that review, go on I dare ya!
-
looking forward to this greatly!

looks like a modern version of a bunch of this older films
by corplhicks
Nothing new here.
Typical Allen messages:
1) Life basically sucks, or at least is very difficult and annoying
2)There is no G-d
3)Stop worrying
4) Enjoy life for the time you have
anything else?
p.s. his Masterpieces Hannah and her Sisters and Crimes and Misdemeanors and perhaps Matchpoint have never been equaled -
Dear God, when is this out.
-
nobody cracks me up quite like he does. I'd rather have the new season of Curb starting, but this will do just fine.
-
Supposedly Gervais was going to follow up The Office with a show in which he and Stephen Merchant would play themselves getting into all sorts of minor trouble Somebody showed him Curb and he thought "oh shit, it's been done," and came up with Extras instead. Pretty cool, if true.
-
This could be a great comedy.
-
Extras isn't far removed from Curb (esp. the second series) but Larry David is the master.
I've been watching the second season (catching up on the DVDs, thank you library!) Wonderful stuff.
Also, there was this series where Gervais met his comedy heroes, and his interview with David was like two old friends.
Finally, a friend of mine met Larry David at his office and said he was very nice. -
the trailer's not that funny.
-
Granted it was only for about 10 seconds and you could barely see him and he only had a couple lines, but its happened before.
Radio Days is the film and its Woody's most underrated. -
Although he also has a short part in Oedipus Wrecks.
-
I've been looking forward to this. I love Woody Allen, I love Larry David, and the trailer looks great. Can't wait for June...
-
ppl on this site always moan about the fucking ads. the talkback maybe circa 1998 but your comp isnt. firefox + adblock plus = no fucking ads and no whining about how annoying it is. ghostery tells me theres 4 ad trackers on this site...more than any site i visit. get that burger money harry!!!!
-
...nah, this is too obvious. Larry David and Woody Allen? Then the trailer started and it's an older NYC Jew-y character w/ a young hottie. Okay, I get it already. Enough! But by the end, I dug it. Crap. The money I'll save not going to Terminator might go to this.
-
To see a Woody Allen film. HE SLEEP WITH HIS DAUGHTER, OK? HE LEFT NAKED POLAROIDS OF HER FOR HIS 'WIFE' TO FIND. Granted she wasn't his biological daughter, but Jesus H. Christ - he was her father. I would beat this prick to death with a tire-iron and feel no remorse.
-
Right, I can see that you spend a lot of time worrying about what directors do in their beds than the quality they produce on film. I don't condone what Woody Allen did behind the scenes, but it is NONE of my business and I would much rather focus on the quality of his storytelling which is pretty much on genius level. Albert Einstein married his cousin... oh and don't get me started on Roman Polanski whose victim BTW wants the charges dropped! Dude, go to a tabloid website and comment if you wish, we are talking movies/film here.
-
Like others have said, I don't condone his actions and they are the product of the same flawed, neurotic mind that produced his films.
Also like others have said, it's only fair to look at the quality of said films.
The sad fact is if you dig deep enough you can find dirt on anyone- Mandela engaged in terrorist action, Churchill was an alcoholic with mental problems etc etc.
OK that sounds like I'm making Woody Allen out to be a historical figure, but I'm willing to bet this will all be conviently skimmed over when the inevitable happens. -
Larry David.
Woody Allen.
Gold. -
I'm actually more disgusted with you admitting you'd happily beat someone to death than I am with Woody Allen. Seriously, you're a bit fucked in the head to actually enjoy the thought of that, no matter what the victim has done.
-
This looks like one of the good ones.
-
Or one of those other douches who specializes in fake outrage. Yer probably a perfect specimen yourself, with all those rocks, I mean tire irons you're throwing.
-
Woody Allen's personal life is rather creepy and twisted, but so are you, apparently!
-
Why do I have to do this every time there's a Woody thread? Soon-Yi was NEVER Woody's daughter. Did you notice her maiden name is "Previn"? That's because she was Mia Farrow's adopted daughter with PREVIOUS HUSBAND Andre Previn. Woody did not help raise her. Also, Woody and Soon-Yi have now been together for what, 15 years? The proof is in the pudding. Regardless, stop repeating distortions of the truth, and try to be a little better informed. Or maybe you're the one who should be beaten to death with a blunt object just for being an idiot.
-
Not only was she not his daughter (thanks for your endurance dealing with people like smoking robot, Lazarus), but Allen never even lived with Farrow. And bobohead, the reason Allen keeps putting out movies is that they make money, especially in Europe. It's not a lot of money, but it's enough to make enough people invest money in his films. It's really rather simple.

This is my #1 movcie of this year! I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE IT!
by proman1984
It looks aboslutely fantastic and organic!
-
Neurotic whiny Jew humor... can't wait
-
And realize he's a benchmark film director. But could we possibly one day get something a wee bit different than the usual existential musings of neurotic leads?
-
Havent looked forward to a woody allen film in a long time, plus no Scarlet!
-
when he makes these life-affirming movies. Larry David says "this is not a feel-good movie," but that's precisely what Allen does best, feel good movies for people who aren't looking to feel good. I can't
-
whatever works is henceforth my new catch-phraze.
-
So, is the cynical old man gonna find live with the cute little young woman? If I was an older woman I would hate these movies. Woody's worst offense was putting himself in a starring role alongside Scarlett Johanssen.Oh, and yes, Soon-yi wasn't his actual daughter, he wasn't raising her, etc. But ya gotta admit, it's at the very least kinda creepy.
-
I love Larry David, so who cares?
-
Are you fucking kidding me? I guess I just assumed this was an adult comedy. No way I'm shelling "theater money" for this.
-
Get over the whole need for an "R" rating....a movie is gonna be good, or not, regardless of it's rating... And just because something is PG-13 it's not necessarily for kiddie set.
-
It's perfectly possible to create an adult comedy without swears. Not easy, but possible.
-
Larry Davis is TV's salvation; TV, in fact, is hardly worthy of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. But this movie is loaded with the familiar Woody Allen platitudes (stereotyped theology, bitchy wives, unenlightened neophytes, blah-blah-blah. Looks like something that was ground out as a sitcom for the late Walter Matthau).
-
Woody likes hot young jailbait ass...but so don't the rest of us.
-
Nice writing, great delivery, nice settings, interesting characters.
-
I'm confused. I didn't know he could make movies without her anymore. I thought her tits were why they kept giving him money.
-
Yet another movie where his alter ego is impossibly attractive to a cute young girl. That dude needs therapy.
-
At least Woody has a penis...as opposed to George Lucas!
-
Anyone claiming to be an atheist would be advised that all hatred for sex and sexuality stems directly from religious lies and to use terms like pervert, slut, whore, etc is as irrational as prayer or communion.
A woman's worth as a human being isn't decreased by her sexual experience and unless you believe that is true, thus supporting the religious line on the subject, you wouldn't use those words and you wouldn't care if Woody Allen ended up marrying his ex-wife's adopted adult daughter. I sure don't. -
it's about time this grumpy bastard was in a film.
-
I think I might need to catch this one. I'll be darned, but Evan Rachel Wood's character seems endearing enough to see it.
-
Genius!
-
I'll watch to see if LD is able to pull off the rarest feat an actor today could, making post-Crimes and Misdemenours Woody Allen dialogue sound tolerable. If he does they had better give him a goddamn oscar.
-
I have been a Woody Allen fan for years but I think it's strange for him to be writing dialog for Larry David. The thing about Woody and Larry is they play themselves. Someone noted earlier how they can only be compared to each other, I agree with that. I wonder if the laughs would be stronger if it was just Larry David writing his own material.
In any case, Woody is a true inspiration and keeps making great films (like Vicky Christina Barcelona and Matchpoint) in his later years and is a true artist.
Imagine someone like Jimmy Fallon going from kind of funny comic to in his later years being considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, dramatic AND comedic, and you get an idea of how strange Woody's carreer has been.
I look forward to this flick like all of Allen's films, just hope the strong personality of both Allen and David don't cancel each other out.
-
When he hits, like Match Point or Vicky Christina Barcelona he makes some of the best movies out there. I'm on board for this one because his output has been steadily getting more hit than miss. What I like about the trailer is that it doesn't seem as bleak and desolate as the better of his latter work has been since his last masterpiece "Crimes and Misdemeanors."
-
actually his career is hit or miss...but the guy makes a film a year...hes batting way above 500 in my book
-
religious people don't hate sex.
-
it didn't seem very Woody Allen-ish actually. That trailer did nothing for me and I was looking forward to this. I doubt if it will be in a theater by me anyway. I'll probably have to catch it on DVD.
-
And are raising an underage child in your home as your daughter and as soon as she's 18 you FUCK HER AND LEAVE THE POLAROIDS FOR HER FOSTER-MOTHER TO FIND YOU ARE GARBAGE WRAPPED IN SKIN. Go ahead. Tell me again that's not what happened.
-
And a poll in which 48% of the people agreed with me.
http://www.pollsb.com/polls/p2045654-woody_allen_s_relationship_soon_yi_previn_change#results -
Polls are different than facts. Allen never lived with Soon-Yi. He never lived with her mother. He never took part in raising her. These are facts. Polls are irrelevant. I hope this helps.

Wouldn't it be something to see Larry get an Oscar nomination...
by danielkurland
Obviously just wishful thinking here, but how fucking cool would that be? The material he could take from that for Curb would be endless.

Woody = one of few great directors still making great films.
by flip63hole
And without fucking CGI. He's still sticking to his guns, not making a bunch of dated crap. He will have an astounding body of work when he is gone. An amazing artist like no other...
-
Vicky Cristina was decent but a minor piece. This is looks promising, it could be his first really good comedy since Deconstructing Harry. I love Larry David as well but I'm hearing mixed things about this, good but not great mostly.
-
not the other way around
-
Larry David buys a Trailer! Yayyy.
-
Chill out man. She was his ex wife's adopted daughter. Is it 'weird' for an older man to hook up with a young woman who was raised by his ex wife? Yeah. Did it hurt a single person on this planet? No. He wasn't a father figure to this woman. Was he kinda pathetic for not finding a woman his own age? I guess. But he's kinda pathetic period. But you are commenting on AICN, so, that means that you are no saint yourself. You've probably masturbated to porn with underage asian slave girls.
-
This is the same as the Mel Gibson argument, although I stress the situations are poles apart (geddit?). Does a person's private life affect our decision to watch their art? I'm looking forward to this regardless, although Larry David will forever be burned into my retinas as playing himself in Curb.
-
Advertising is one thing, but does it really need to cover the story while you are trying to read it!?
-
with his ex wife's adopted daughter when she was a kid? hahaha She's an adult, he's an adult and they are not blood related. So where's the problem? oh it's that mia said said he used to bonce her on his knee as a kid...yeah ok that bit is a bit creepy.
-
His last great film was Bullets Over Broadway. His last decent film was Everyone Says I Love You.
-
It's astounding that he continues to get money to make films. Are his investors sadists? They don't make a dime, a handful of New York critics will love it (before they even see it) and no one else will really care. The only thing going for it is that people might think it's Curb Your Enthusiasm : The Movie
-
We like his films here so we give him money to make more. I'd get used to it because shitloads more are coming!
-
Watching this trailer I'm not sure if I should feel disappointed that Woody Allen just had somebody else play himself in a movie or be amazed at how Woody Allen has managed to find his almost identical clone to be in every movie he doesn't feel like acting in from now on. It's just confusing.
-
poor diddums. jesus christ some people are dumb.
-
I love Europe, I go there often, but liking his new films is no badge of honor. Annie Hall and Manhattan are masterpieces. Plus Sleeper, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Bullets Over Broadway are all great films. But he hasn't made a watchable film in nearly 20 years. He's a punchline.
-
At least he's a bit closer to the mark - Kenneth Branagh and Will Ferrell were ludicrous. Still, it's his usual dirty-old-man set-up, only this time without Scarlett Johansson's boobs (I'll bet she finally got too skeeved by Allen calling her his "muse" - yeah, right). At least Allen now realizes that at 70+ he's waaay too old to cast himself as the "love object" to nubile young women, although David is icky enough as it is. Yuck all around.
-
I've never seen a Woody Allen movie in my life. At first I never thought he was funny, then he was fucking his daughter or some shit. But I'll see it to stand behind my boy Larry David.
