Woody Allen's WHATEVER WORKS starring Larry David gets a trailer!

Published at:  May 10, 2009 2:28:30 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I got to see this flick at ShoWest a few weeks back and let me tell you that I can't believe it's taken this long to get Larry David paired with Woody Allen. I love CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, which has Larry essentially playing a mixture of Woody Allen and Ricky Gervais' David Brent. It would break my heart to find out that Larry David himself is radically different from his comedic persona on that show, actually...

Anyway, WHATEVER WORKS is about an aging intellectual cynic in New York who somehow ends up with the bright-eyed, dull-witted Evan Rachel Wood moving in as a roommate. Their relationship evolves to a crazy level, but I won't go into much detail right now. I may write up a review soon... I never got any official word from the studio as to an embargo, so I'll take silence as consent.

I will say the movie is fucking hilarious and the best Woody Allen comedy for a good long while. You get a good sampling of what the flick is in the new trailer, which has hit Apple.

Click here to watch Larry David break the fourth wall!

Enjoy!

I re-watched Love & Death last night, you know his earlier funny stuff. It's great and Quint? I once met someone who had worked with Larry David and I asked them what he was like. Her totally serious reply was "He's just as obnoxious in real life" so, I guess you've got no worries.

I'm not a huge Woody Allen fan...I stopped with the big interest in his films around 1977...and I wasn't born until 1979...but I will DEFINITELY see this.note to Woody, this is how you get younger audiences. not Scarlett Johansson...unless you want younger swedish audiences.p.s. Larry David cannot be compared to anyone... except Woody Allen. That's it. There's Woody Allen and Larry David in a class all their own. I love Ricky, but he's no Woody or Larry. Oh, wait, you are comparing the character in this film that Larry plays to the character Ricky played. Oh, ok. But no comparing Larry David to anyone else but Woody Allen. There can be only 2.

Laughing out loud at trailers is rare for me, I'm as grumpy as Larry David and usually just complain about how they missed the target, but this looks like it has a chance at actually being very good. I'm so glad Woody got Larry onboard. Is a comedy classic too much to hope for? I want to see this yesterday; Quint you lucky so-and-so... write that review, go on I dare ya!

    Typical Allen messages:

    1) Life basically sucks, or at least is very difficult and annoying
    2)There is no G-d
    3)Stop worrying
    4) Enjoy life for the time you have

Supposedly Gervais was going to follow up The Office with a show in which he and Stephen Merchant would play themselves getting into all sorts of minor trouble Somebody showed him Curb and he thought "oh shit, it's been done," and came up with Extras instead. Pretty cool, if true.

I've been watching the second season (catching up on the DVDs, thank you library!) Wonderful stuff.

    by pearboy

Right, I can see that you spend a lot of time worrying about what directors do in their beds than the quality they produce on film. I don't condone what Woody Allen did behind the scenes, but it is NONE of my business and I would much rather focus on the quality of his storytelling which is pretty much on genius level. Albert Einstein married his cousin... oh and don't get me started on Roman Polanski whose victim BTW wants the charges dropped! Dude, go to a tabloid website and comment if you wish, we are talking movies/film here.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Like others have said, I don't condone his actions and they are the product of the same flawed, neurotic mind that produced his films.
Also like others have said, it's only fair to look at the quality of said films.
The sad fact is if you dig deep enough you can find dirt on anyone- Mandela engaged in terrorist action, Churchill was an alcoholic with mental problems etc etc.
OK that sounds like I'm making Woody Allen out to be a historical figure, but I'm willing to bet this will all be conviently skimmed over when the inevitable happens.

    by lazarus long

Why do I have to do this every time there's a Woody thread? Soon-Yi was NEVER Woody's daughter. Did you notice her maiden name is "Previn"? That's because she was Mia Farrow's adopted daughter with PREVIOUS HUSBAND Andre Previn. Woody did not help raise her. Also, Woody and Soon-Yi have now been together for what, 15 years? The proof is in the pudding. Regardless, stop repeating distortions of the truth, and try to be a little better informed. Or maybe you're the one who should be beaten to death with a blunt object just for being an idiot.

    by aikimoe

Not only was she not his daughter (thanks for your endurance dealing with people like smoking robot, Lazarus), but Allen never even lived with Farrow. And bobohead, the reason Allen keeps putting out movies is that they make money, especially in Europe. It's not a lot of money, but it's enough to make enough people invest money in his films. It's really rather simple.

Anyone claiming to be an atheist would be advised that all hatred for sex and sexuality stems directly from religious lies and to use terms like pervert, slut, whore, etc is as irrational as prayer or communion.

A woman's worth as a human being isn't decreased by her sexual experience and unless you believe that is true, thus supporting the religious line on the subject, you wouldn't use those words and you wouldn't care if Woody Allen ended up marrying his ex-wife's adopted adult daughter. I sure don't.

    by cylon_conspiracy

I have been a Woody Allen fan for years but I think it's strange for him to be writing dialog for Larry David. The thing about Woody and Larry is they play themselves. Someone noted earlier how they can only be compared to each other, I agree with that. I wonder if the laughs would be stronger if it was just Larry David writing his own material.

In any case, Woody is a true inspiration and keeps making great films (like Vicky Christina Barcelona and Matchpoint) in his later years and is a true artist.

Imagine someone like Jimmy Fallon going from kind of funny comic to in his later years being considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, dramatic AND comedic, and you get an idea of how strange Woody's carreer has been.

I look forward to this flick like all of Allen's films, just hope the strong personality of both Allen and David don't cancel each other out.

    by larry of arabia

When he hits, like Match Point or Vicky Christina Barcelona he makes some of the best movies out there. I'm on board for this one because his output has been steadily getting more hit than miss. What I like about the trailer is that it doesn't seem as bleak and desolate as the better of his latter work has been since his last masterpiece "Crimes and Misdemeanors."

Did it hurt a single person on this planet? No. He wasn't a father figure to this woman. Was he kinda pathetic for not finding a woman his own age? I guess. But he's kinda pathetic period. But you are commenting on AICN, so, that means that you are no saint yourself. You've probably masturbated to porn with underage asian slave girls.

This is the same as the Mel Gibson argument, although I stress the situations are poles apart (geddit?). Does a person's private life affect our decision to watch their art? I'm looking forward to this regardless, although Larry David will forever be burned into my retinas as playing himself in Curb.

Advertising is one thing, but does it really need to cover the story while you are trying to read it!?

Does anyone remember when Allen was funny?

    by matthooper8

His last great film was Bullets Over Broadway. His last decent film was Everyone Says I Love You.

Looks as bad as the last dozen of his turds

    by matthooper8

It's astounding that he continues to get money to make films. Are his investors sadists? They don't make a dime, a handful of New York critics will love it (before they even see it) and no one else will really care. The only thing going for it is that people might think it's Curb Your Enthusiasm : The Movie

    Woody - Woody + Woody = Woody

    by cinemanimetal

Watching this trailer I'm not sure if I should feel disappointed that Woody Allen just had somebody else play himself in a movie or be amazed at how Woody Allen has managed to find his almost identical clone to be in every movie he doesn't feel like acting in from now on. It's just confusing.

I love Europe, I go there often, but liking his new films is no badge of honor. Annie Hall and Manhattan are masterpieces. Plus Sleeper, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Bullets Over Broadway are all great films. But he hasn't made a watchable film in nearly 20 years. He's a punchline.

    So...David is Allen's stand-in this time.

    by annoyyou

At least he's a bit closer to the mark - Kenneth Branagh and Will Ferrell were ludicrous. Still, it's his usual dirty-old-man set-up, only this time without Scarlett Johansson's boobs (I'll bet she finally got too skeeved by Allen calling her his "muse" - yeah, right). At least Allen now realizes that at 70+ he's waaay too old to cast himself as the "love object" to nubile young women, although David is icky enough as it is. Yuck all around.

Larry David is enough to make me see it.

    by cletus van damme

I've never seen a Woody Allen movie in my life. At first I never thought he was funny, then he was fucking his daughter or some shit. But I'll see it to stand behind my boy Larry David.
