Pics, Details, And More From Guy Ritchie's SHERLOCK HOLMES!!

Published at:  May 08, 2009 8:44:46 PM CDT

Merrick here...

USA Today features an interesting article on the making of Guy Ritchie's SHERLOCK HOLMES (due in theaters 'round Christmas).

The piece includes discussions on developing the "bromantic" relationship between Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr. ) and Watson (Jude Law), and discusses the tribulations of getting The Powers That Be to buy into this particular interpretation of Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth.

"To persuade those who "did not get it," Wigram wrote a graphic novel and had an artist depict Sherlock in comic-book form. The image that convinced the studio suits? The sleuth, scruffy and stubbly, with a whip in one hand and a sword in the other.

"We are trying to make a fun adventure movie," he says. "My favorites are the Bond films. Raiders of the Lost Ark. I want to make a movie like that."

...says Producer Lionel Wigram in a discussion whose entirety can be found HERE.

Sherlock Holmes was a pretty good fighter

    by continentalop

He is said to be an "expert boxer and Swordsman" in "The Study of Scarlet"; in "The Sign of the Four", it is mentioned by a prize-fighter that he fought as an amateur that Homes could have became a pro; and in the "The Adventures of the Empty House", Holmes states he has some knowledge of "baritsu, or the Japanese system of wrestling", which is probably a misspelling of Bartitsu, which incorporated some Judo and Jujitsu:

However, despite all of this Holmes has always been a DETECTIVE character. You can have a little action of fighting, but for God sakes he better be using his skills of deduction to solve incredibly complex crimes or else this is not a Sherlock Holmes movie but another LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN.

    I forgot to mention

    by continentalop

That Holmes is also mentioned to be an expert at stick fighting and using his cane as a weapon("The Red-Headed League and "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client").

    No one's saying he wasn't a fighter

    by aversiontherapy2

Holmes was skilled in several forms of hand to hand and weapon combat, but he was far from an action hero.

    by dingbatty

will still be there (though I'm particularly fond of the Nicol Williamson non-canon version).Actioner Holmes seems more like Sexton Blake, though I suppose Holmes holds more recognition factor for more countries. Blake isn't that well-known outside of Ol' Blighty. Would be cool to see Blake and Zenith on the big screen.

Honestly, an honest-to-god faithful adaptation of Sherlock Holmes wouldn't make for a very exciting movie, so I'm open to an Indiana Jones-style re-imagining. It still has to be good, though.

    by 2leggedfreak

...a different take on established heroes. It beats just repeating the same old stories. Case in point is Abrams Star Trek (Wonder what he might have done with Superman given the chance !)

However having said that this is Guy Ritchie and I wouldn't let that man within a mile of a character I was even mildly fond of.

    People are so negative

    by indyit

First of all - For all those Guy Ritchie haters... Ritchie didn't write the movie... if that's any comfort.

The movie looks great. It looks different from the norm... but that's exactly what this movie needs... if it was just a rehash of what's been done before - then why make it?

From the interview and the inserts in the picture gallery the approach they're taking sounds great... They seem to be taking a similar dynamic to what they do in House... Holmes is a genius but needs another person to keep him grounded and bounce ideas off of.

Colour me excited... I think it's looking great so far.

You may recall several years ago, when McG was slated to direct Superman and J.J. wrote the script - Krypton never blew up, he could kung-fu fight in the air, and Lex Luthor was an alien who tried to rape Ma Kent. He aced Star Trek, though.

Yep I remember that but I don't care whats on the first draft of scripts I care what reaches the screen.

Unfortunately I fail to see outside of his Mockney Gangster films any sign that Ritchie could pull this off. I'm not a hater ( I view these folk as people who have an agenda and don't weigh up the evidence) I just don't see where Ritchie has the sensibilities to make a decent non Mockney Gangster film.

I read a script that was floating around the internet and it was actually very good. The casting is excellent. I have heard a rumor from a good source that Russell Crowe has a cameo near the end as Moriarty. You only see him for a minute, thus setting up a hoped for sequel.

    by unfilmable_blue_dong

Look how Street Tough #1 is presenting his lucious ass while Street Tough #2 winds up his 48" black dildo to be inserted fortwith. And CLEARLY Holmes-O is choreographing the whole thing.

This homosexualing of movies makes me sick to my stomach because I am so straight that I don't think of these gay things until forced to by the agenda-promoting Hollyweird machine! You know, KIDS could be clicking on AICN and this crap will surely turn them gay from watching! Hmmmm...watching...homosexuals..uh STUPID QUEERS!!

Well, I don't think I need to prove my point any more, I'm sure all you talkbackers agree with me.
