If you thought you loved that DISTRICT 9 trailer before, check out unblurred and translated!! Holy Alien Poo!

Published at:  May 08, 2009 6:57:07 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Wow. Wow. Wow. You know. It's so amazing what unblurring and giving meaning to those alien noises can suddenly fill a trailer with a level of foreboding, menace, pathos and character. Like most of you, I loved the trailer as it was before, but this small (actually huge) change suddenly made this the film I'm really most excited about for the rest of the summer. This is really damn cool!

Don't believe the Government Lies - Aliens are being screwed over as much as the rest of us, if not more!

    by lornsorrow

a re-spin of V with perhaps some sort of message about how we should treat immigrants better. But, perhaps not. The trail doesn't show much. The aline character looked great, great space ship, etc., but really, it seems like just a rehash of the same typical UFO stuff we have all seen before. I long for a return to intelligent Sci-Fi. What happened to the the 2001 series? Why not finish that, there are more books. And what about the filmRendezvous with Rama that they are supposed to actually be making based on the Arthur C. Clarke novel. Now that sounded cool. Hell, even the reboot of Forbidden Planet had me interested. Yeah, Transformers is fun pop corn stuff (and Megan Fox is hot), but com on, lets get back to some smart shit, before SPACE OPERA became the ruling words of the Sci-Fi world. Colossus -the forbin project, Silent Running, Logans Run, etc. Those were the days...

    by houston500

this looks like it's going to be this generations 'Day The Earth Stood Still'. It looks sombre, doesn't have a message delivered with a 50's sledgehammer about 'not fighting' and shit, but looks like it will be an allegory about racism, palestine, being dicks to each other and stuff. I hope it is cos they sure haven't put any action in the teaser, but they have a poignant end with the guy sayin 'we should all learn from this'. I mean, Alien Nation was just My Lethal Weapon's an Alien! I don't get that vibe from this teaser, hopefully it doesn't have a daft action scene ending but pans out to be one of those things normally referred to as a 'story'. Can't wait.

They just removed any conflict the audience might have in their own minds when watching the trailer. What got me excited about it was the sense of uncertainty and paranoia, the fear of the unknown because the simple truth is MAYBE the unknown CAN hurt you, but you just don't know.
But no, it's just a straightforward allegorical cliche about racism after all. Humans are jerks. Aliens are good. Epic yawn.

the Cloverfield website and all that was FUN. I was here on AICN during a lot of it, and we liked it. so I don't see why you'd get up in arms about this website and a few links/articles.if you give me a little of that and actually make a DECENT FILM, all the better. Cloverfield was a failed experiment because they didn't go all the way with it. if you want to shoot it with the little camera, and have that conceit, great. but then cut out the corny love story. cut out the comic relief. cut out the uncomfortable bookends to the "story". just make it batshit crazy the whole way. it could have been great, instead, just passable.

Which was blomkamp's short film about alien immigrants.

They blur the faces out in that film and also in Jackson's film because the aliens faces are so offensive and vulgar to human's... Think Cthuluesque.

I am glad they provided translations and unblurred the alien, because it seems they are simply passing by when they experience some trouble. We are holding them on earth, trying to learn about their weapons and space travel... how as human can we let such an 'Opportunity' go by?

This film is going to say alot for how we as a race treat are own race, now imagine how we would treat one not even human. Good open up some good and upsetting issues about how we humans behave.

I LOVE that camera shot from inside the helicopter.

    by jdanielp

I love how Hollywood is starting to REALLY "get it" with sci-fi and fantasy,...as every genre does have the potential to feel as REAL (or unreal) as anything else. "THE DARK KNIGHT" (and to a lesser degree, "IRON MAN") raised the bar for life-like realism within the superhero genre. "DISTRICT 9" (and perhaps James Cameron's upcoming AVATAR) look to do the same for sci-fi (though, obviously, the sci-fi genre has far less ground to cover).

In truth, there is so much room for exploration within sci-fi motion pictures, which I predict will (soon) become as common as the superhero sequel. Hopefully, an uncommon quality will also be hitting our local movie houses.

In past talkbacks, before BATMAN BEGINS was in production, I had mentioned how the fantasy of comic book stories BECOME real in the mind of a reader. Villains don't prance around, telling of evil plans...as if on a stage in a play. They mimic real people, within the fantasy of the character. But just as important, I feel, is the artistic visualization of the movie,...no matter how close or far from reality we go.

WATCHMEN was an amazing motion picture, though not perfect. Same for THE DARK KNIGHT. One succeeds at the box office far beyond expectations. The other was a box office disappointment (though should do well enough after dvd/blu-ray sales).

What I'm getting at...is that, despite what this may suggest to Warner Bros. and the rest of Hollywood, these box office results tell a lie. This...kick...that Hollywood is getting in bringing such fiction to a new level of life, from news media video footage and shake-camera techniques...to 3D state-of-the-art technology and advancing cgi,...it is ALL extremely cool. I'm a fan of this overall technique, which took too long to get here. However, I'm also a fan of professional choreography and the artistry of involving the camera within that (see THE MATRIX), and the visual playground that movies offer, being pictures in motion. Don't let artistry die in the face of realism. They both have their place. And it is up to Hollywood to find people with the vision to bring the unreal to life, even if it involves a little artistry,...even if it involves a lot (such as WATCHMEN).

Do you want to know what camera shot EATS at me, from THE DARK KNIGHT? (*spoiler warning* --for the 2 people whom haven't seen it, yet.) There's a camera shot that feels so FORCED to me,...that, it is as if Nolan did the shot ONLY because he felt he HAD to. The camera shot I'm talking about is while police are at the door of Mrs. Gordon, during the notification of her husband's death. Specifically, it is the shot of Batman, in earshot, cape flowing (to the side) while crouched. --I get it. It was for the sake of clarity. The audience needs to be convinced that Batman overhears. It leads into the next scene, releasing that emotional energy, which is an element of storytelling that I LOVE. And you may as well have that flowing cape. I got it. But...

Where do you, as an artist, draw the line? In my opinion, THE DARK KNIGHT was already committed to that higher bar of realism from the very beginning. But Batman, as he was visually captured in that above mentioned scene, was in a forced camera shot,...in the face of that realism. In hindsight (as convenient as hindsight is), I would have preferred Batman listening from a far rooftop, though within eyesight. Have Batman shoot a dart with a mini microphone so that he listens...and Mrs. Gordon screams at him upon sight, after learning a supposed truth. To me, THAT camera shot should have felt REAL while ALSO looking extremely cool.

    Chose your sides.

But I just wanna know,...when is Michael Mann going to make a superhero flick?

And SUPERMAN would indeed fit into the next Nolan Bat-flick, under the theme of escalation. Look at DISTRICT 9, for cryin' out loud!

Children of Men meets Star Wars...

    by rakafraker

Oh, MAN!!! I'm getting a good vibe off this. I sure hope it lives up to its promise. When I saw Wolverine, the original, blurred trailer played and it seriously freaked people out in the theatre that I saw it in (mostly rural folks). I'm looking forward to this one for SURE!Was it me or was the alien talking like a Geonosian?

I'm pretty sure it's called "First Sleep" from the Solaris (2002) score. Cliff Martinez wrote it. Great album, but it's hard to find these days.

See, the Palestinan metaphor would make sense

    by s0nicdeathmonkey

If the aliens were actually offered a larger (and oil filled) planet with shared control over the important parts of Earth but instead chose to forgo that and flee from earth while 5 other alien planets attacked earth, the day it was formed. Oh, also, shortly before earth was formed, all humans were violently expelling from alien planets into earth so that there would be a higher concentration of humans in one place for the 5 alien planets to attack. Otherwise, it's not a metaphor for Palestinian refuges so much as it is a metaphor for lame-duck-half-thought-through-arguments-that-ultimately-boil-down-to-antisemtism. ___________
but it any case, all of that is irrelevant because this clearly a film about the apartheid state in South Africa and not the conflict between Israel and Palestine. And the two only even look similar to idiots.

    Now this looks cool

    by ebonic_plague

That short film with the aliens and the robocop was pretty damn cool, too, I'm glad they decided to give this guy a bigger palette to flesh out this story rather than waste their time with a pointlessly derivative Halo movie. Also, as s0nicdeathmonkey has demonstrated, it will be entertaining to watch the partisan hacks twist their panties into knots about the political allegories in this story. Stay predictable, monkeyboy.

    Flickapoo

    by continentalop

You know what would be a great twist? If the aliens really did have some sort of ulterior motive and were plotting something sinister. Then they really would be like the black, brown, Palestinians, and even the Jews, Americans, Europeans, Chinese, and every one else on this planet.
That would be ironic ending. They really are trying to fuck over the humans which proves they actually do belong here on Earth with us.

How Did That Guy Know The Alien Language?

    by pr1c3y

The director better have a smart answer for that within the film or maybe I'll find one on this board.

    limboslam123 not Indepenece day...

    by murdermostfowl

don't fault the movie for visually resembling an independence day ship floating.... I'll give them a pass on that. How many ways can you portray a ship in the atmosphere. Yes, I'm kind of tired of all alien ships that land being round, but that's part of Hollywood alien mythos.
I'm willing to give this a chance... I just hope as others have that there's a real story somewhere and that it's not all atmosphere.

    Unblurring was cool but...

    by outlawsdelejos

The subtitles really put the context of the film out there. No we know what it's about, instead of just cool imagery. Releasing the first trailer then altering it and re-releasing it this way is genius. Shock and awe, then add a context. Brilliant.

    by murdermostfowl

I can't have been the only person who saw the aliens unblurred months ago. This is not new. A few people's comments on her are a little too jizzy. I think the movie looks cool, but seriously there better be some damn characters. If it's all documentary it's going to be boring as hell.
