    That was not Top Ten

    by squarebird

Why is it titled as such? By the way, those who are stating that money is the top reason for Leonard Nimoy's work - that is the marvel of capitalism - all great art was created for money. In other systems art is created for politics or in one's limited spare time for an audience of one, with the expected results.

    by geronimo jackson

If money is the only incentive for great art, explain to me Kafka, John Cassavetes, Herman Melville, JS Bach, Chopin, to name but a few. If you were to go on to accuse some of these examples of making art for an 'audience of one', you are confusing 'great' art with 'popular' art.

Geronimo... ever heard of patrons of the arts?

    by cyrent

It IS about money... not exclusively, but it certainly is. Bach in particular came from a family of professional musicians; it was a means of living for him in addition to something he loved to do I'm sure.

    Norm MacDonald Rules!

    by lornsorrow

Sometimes he is just funny as hell! Wish he had more leading roles in films. Dirty Work and Screwed are about all that I know of and I have those already. Wish they would release that tv series he did a while back, the Norm Macdonald show, or whatever. Love to watch this guy work.

    Yes, Cyrent

    by geronimo jackson

I have, but money did not drive him to create great art, as he only earned a humble living, and he was frequently hired for jobs other than composing (musical director), which is not patronage in the strict sense. You haven't touched on any of my other examples in your sweeping generalization.

The point is not that people don't want to create great art and will when they are enabled. The point is that the miracle of capitalism has freed up a number of people to create art - and great art - that is simply staggering in historical terms. We do not know in advance who the great artists will be .. but it is simple arithmetic that the more folks who turn to art to make a living, the more 'greats' will be discovered. As for the other issue you touch on .. the quality of popular versus personal art .. I think successful artists tend to do their best art before they become financially independent enough to express themselves freely. For example, I do not think in a million years that Leonard Nimoy would have chosen the role of Spock to begin with over, say, McBeth if the financial rewards offered were equal. Compare Graham "Ghastly" Ingles absolutely ingenious and unparalleled works of horror for EC comics with the boring pictures he did later for himself. He said later he did NOT like doing the horror - it was even a bit offensive to him religiously - and he did it for the money - Thank God.
