VISITOR Director Tom McCarthy To Reunite With STATION AGENT Star Peter Dinklage For HBO’s GAME OF THRONES Pilot!!

I am – Hercules!!
“The Visitor” director Tom McCarthy is reuniting with his “Station Agent” star, Peter Dinklage, for HBO’s “A Game of Thrones” pilot, based on George R.R. Martin’s series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels
.
These are apparently very long, grown-up fantasy novels, with thousands of characters – the major ones quite flawed and complex - and lots of sex, violence and political intrigue.
AICN got a tip in February that Dinklage was likely to be tapped for the role of Tyrion.

This sounds interesting.
-
woohoo! I wish HBO would put more resources towards this and less towards most of the other crap they've been doing lately.
-
They will have to rough him up a little, Dinklage is a little too good looking for my image of Tyrion. Michael J Anderson (twin peaks) would have been neat, but really too old. Warwick Davis I don't see as serious enough, I suppose that means he seems the best I could think of
-
Love these books...love the choice. Now get Eric Bana for Eddard.
-
I even used all caps.Incredible series of stories; Martin takes the grit of realism and uses it to its literary height in a medieval setting. This series will blow peoples mind, especially if they see it on HBO. This is bascailly the kind of production that any medieval fan or fantasy fan has always dreamed of.
-
I do not have an HBO subscription. When this series starts to air, I will have an HBO subscription. Looking forward to it. Looks like they're surrounding the show with great talent in front of the camera, but just as importantly, behind the camera as well.
-
is he directing? acting?
-
McCarthy is directing; Dinklage is acting.
-
Eddard's one of my favorite characters ever, I hope they pick someone good for him. Please don't screw up Jon Snow or Jamie Lannister either. Oh, and I can't wait to see Direwolves on screen.
-
Winter is coming brother
-
i know mccarthy more for his acting.
-
Wow, this is good news! I haven't seen "The Visitor" yet, but I loved "The Station Agent" for its funky characters, colorful cinematography, and unusual story. It's a film I often find myself thinking about, weirdly enough. I'm really excited to see what Tom McCarthy does with "A Game of Thrones."
Peter Dinklage is perfectly cast as Tyrion Lannister, and I think the role could be the actor's most memorable and iconic. I mean, Tyrion's a sly, scheming bastard for the most part, but when he shines, man does he shine. His quirks and penny-pinching belie a huge heart that cares for people more than rest of his incestuous asshole family ever does. And this is all due to his small person stature.
This series is shaping up great. Can't wait! -
that's the good Peter Dinklage, hope we get that guy instead of the guy in Elf
-
And in this case I can't wait.
-
This is the essence of "cool news." The books are unequivocably badass, and Herc, I'm honestly not trying to be snarky here, but you should do yourself a favor and turn off the MTV reality shows and get into this series before it premieres; for geekcentric medieval/fantasy badassery, it's really *that* good. I got turned on to the books when I first met my ex... we were exchanging recommendations for entertainment, and I was championing The Wire as "the best thing ever," while she equally insisted that I read A Game of Thrones, and we agreed to give each other's choices a try. As it happened, I got about halfway through the first few chapters of intro and exposition before putting the book down with a "meh," while she kept falling asleep every time we'd try starting the first season of The Wire. Then a few months later, she started into the episodes herself and finally met Omar and was 100% hooked, and I picked up Game of Thrones again and got a few more chapters in (where the Kingslayer does his thing) and literally tore through the rest of the books like a madman. I think the comparison between the two is pretty apt, too... both have huge casts of complex characters that inhabit very realistically depicted worlds, where shifting allegiances to various institutions affect your view of characters as heroes or villains, and where EVERYONE is expendable when it comes to servicing the story. This is the kind of story that people always say, "they should do this as a sprawling HBO series," and this time they're actually doing it. And casting Dinklage as Tyrion, one of the more interesting and complicated characters, is a sign that they're doing it right.
I'm fucking stoked. I really hope the pilot is picked up by HBO, but half the fun will be seeing how the casting process evolves and how it aligns with what I've already envisioned. There's a great blog dedicated to this show at www.winter-is-coming.blogspot.com with some pretty good casting ideas and news. I just pray that HBO sticks with their decision and doesn't cheap out on this project with no resolution after a few great seasons, like they did with Deadwood. But the fact that it's gotten this far already, with the talent they've gotten onboard, has given me faith that we'll actually get to see this done right, and fairly soon. IMO, this could be better than LOTR, the kind of adult-oriented, smart fantasy TV show that we always beg for but never seem to see. Thanks for the TB, and keep the news coming, Herc! -
..but I've always wondered where those two R's came from. Birth, or 'Hey George, we've got a great idea how you can sell more novels!'?
Enquiring, or possibly merely suspicious minds need to know. -
...the factually-challenged reporter from the last season of The Wire. That's cool! I support any and all cross-pollenation between these two series, as it should certainly lead to quality. Maybe we can see a few more cameos from West Baltimore's finest in the Seven Kingdoms!
-
Seriously at the rate he writes the television series would likely be finished before the books.
-
...so recognize. QUADRUPLE THREAT!
-
it is not to be missed. can't wait.
both The Station Agent and The Visitor were wonderful -
The TOS movie blu-rays don't ship until May 14th. The first season blu-ray started shipping last week.
-
GAME OF THRONES NEWS! WOO! FUCK YEAH!BRING IT! FUCKING BRING IT! YES! YES!!!!
-
I can't think of any character he could play (need to read all of the books again, it's been too long since crows), but if McCarthy is directing, Jenkins should be in it!
-
Given that it's taken George R.R. Martin 4 years+ to finish this next book, and given that he's 60 and obese, and given that the next book won't be the last, well: not to be grim, but the actuarial tables paint a grim picture when it comes to him finishing this series.
-
plus remember that fat fuck Martin said he was "basically done" with the new book as soon as the last one was out, one can only imagine how long it wil take him to finish the series. Of course, if the fat bastard would take some time off of from attending writing conferences, blogging about the NFL, working on merchandising opportunities and painting miniatures, he might actually get around to wiping the bacon grease off his pudgy pig fingers and finishing the book.
-
is how is HBO planning on depicting the critical scenes of a hot 14 year old Daenyrs getting fucked by a savage horse-lord and then chowed out by her hand maiden ?
-
They're his real middle initials. Back in the 1960s he kept getting asked if he was the Beatles manager, so he started using his initials on his professional work to avoid that problem.
"Now get Eric Bana for Eddard."
I'm thinking of another, British actor as Ned. And I'm wondering if it was just conicidence that GRRM used the word 'bean' three times in his last blog entry. Now that would just be the cherry on top :-) -
The Station Agent is the kind of great film that doesn't occur to you as being really good until you find yourself thinking about it again 4 years later.
Song of Ice and Fire was one of the sweetest series of books I read when I was 12. I grew out of the whole epic fantasy thing when I realized that reading DF Wallace, Don Delilo, and Thomas Pynchon was just as fun and would help me fuck hotter, smarter chicks. Still, looking back I realize that it will make a super bad-ass HBO series.
Just had an even better idea though-HBO miniseries of Gravities Rainbow. Who's with me? Slothrop's orgasms predict the V2 bombing of london! What's not to like? -
He has that cool voice. Don't laugh, but he was perfect as Simon Barsinister in Underdog.
-
Would be the next piece of great news I'd like to hear.
Glad Dinklage is official now, he's a terrific actor.
Now they -
You're mistaken. But out of curiosity, where did you get that May 14 date?
-
Richard Jenkins would be perfect as Lord Hoster Tully. Just a lil makeup to make him look even older.
As for Wire cross-pollination it can't get any better than Michael K. Williams (Omar) as Thoros of Myr.
Lord Beric: But Thoros, what shall we do about the Mountain that Rides?
Thoros: Oh, he got's ta get got! -
But it's still not yet. And I got the date from your Amazon link: http://tinyurl.com/csd5ar
-
Amazon likes to ship in advance so you get your DVD on (or before) the street date.
-
who is Tyrion, and why is Dinklage perfect for the role (I don't want to peruse Wikipedia for fear of spoilers, before I read the series)?
-
HBO loves him, he's perfect for the role - yes yes YES!
And Daenerys is 12, BTW, when she's married to the horse lord guy. I have no idea how they're going to handle that, or the 20,000 other characters or subplots, for that matter. This is daunting at best. -
I think they will age all the characters up by 5-10 years. I can't see HBO letting tweens get cut to ribbons.
-
Obviously casting the kid is gonna be the hardest part. They were aged up a couple years in the leaked script, but not much. And of course the producers are gonna want as many 18+ actors as possible simply for labor law purposes. As for the public's opinion of all the sex and death among the youth in the story... if this series makes it past all the other obstacles it faces, i'm sure it'll overcome a buncha conservative group boycotts.
-
By "kid" i meant "kids." Daenyrs, Joffrey, Sansa, Jojen, Arya, Robb, Jon, Meera and Bran. Safe to say Dany, Robb and Jon will be played by 18-20 yr old actors, but the rest can't be, unless they change actors at some point. "I may have never seen a camel, but I know a camel's cunt when I smell one." Only Martin could write a line like that for a 9 year old girl from a royal house.
-
For those wondering what this should look like. By Ted Nasmith. As epic a win as Rothman is a fail.
http://www.tednasmith.com/oth er/grrma rtin.html Credit to winter-is-coming blog for the link. Sidenote to the ladies (on this site?), I'm as thick, hard and long as the Wall. -
Tyrion is the disfigured, dwarfish son of normal human parents belonging to one of the most powerful houses in the land. He's a complex and central character; even though his family are the antagonists (at least in the first book), he has a soft side to go along with his vices and sarcastic wit.
-
Because I read the Wheel of Time series, which is similar in its 2045+ characters, sprawling epic-ness, and political intrigue. . .and while it was good for about the first 4 books or so, it collapsed under its own weight. The central focus became hazy, plot points became convoluted, endless tangents were followed, and every woman became a doe-eyed sex slave waiting to get into Rand's pants.
-
There are no elves and orcs and such, and dragons have died off long ago. As the series goes on, supernatural elements, magic, etc. are slowly creeping back into the world.
-
I agree with you on WoT. In this series I can tell you the first 3 books are fantastic, in my opinion better than WoT, with much more mature themes. The 4th book did get overlong and convolluted, but there is hope the next book will be much better.
-
I'm really enjoying it. But it'll be interesting to see if they include the teen bride angle since Big Love has no problem with it.
But yes, I have to say Dinklage is perfection as Tyrion. If they do this right it'll be epic and a hit. Hopefully they'll stick to it longer than they did with Rome. -
hopefully the remaining casting will be on par like dinklage's tyrion.
-
Yes, MZ. It is very, very good. The most recent book is a bit of a let down. Martin's books keep the cast of thousands down by the occasional murder. Just like in history. Wheel of Time was not qualified to carry Game of Thrones' jockstrap.
-
I wonder if Dinklage will bleach/dye his hair blonde. The blonde look of house Lannister actually has some importance to the story. It also gives a visual cue to family identities and alliances. Small artistic choice, but I hope they keep.
-
According to the draft script that was circulating, the ages are 17 for Jon and Robb (and probably Joffrey as well), 15 for Dany, 13 for Sansa, 11 for Arya and 8 for Bran, with the actors likely to be a couple of years older than those ages.
-
that I had to get to the talkback before I learned what Tom McCarthy would actually be doing in the series...
-
Can you guys imagine that scene when Bran gets broken? Or just before when he looks in? Insane! Or the Khal Drogo and his horslords covering the whole plains. Or Skycells? The wall? Everthing in that book makes me scream epic!
-
Supposedly, the first episode script ends with the line, "The things I do for love." Talk about a cliffhanger! And hopefully (if the pilot is picked up) they'll end the season with the scene of Dany at the funeral pyre. Hot damn, I hope this works out!
-
I have little hope for this series.
There is so much wrong with the script that I really don't think there is much hope for the series with the same guy in charge. Lines were changed just for the sake of changing and aren't at all an improvement from their equivalent in the books. Characters are changed for the sake of being more dynamic I guess, but just come off as cheesey. Hell, Ned comes off as an arrogant douche. . . do you realize how much work that takes?
-
Stupid and self-righteous, too. He should have stayed up north and told the king to kiss his arse. But then it would be a completely different story.
-
I wonder if Tyrion really is Lannister? Not that I know anything of course, but maybe that's one of the reasons that old man Lannister hates him so much.
-
They're not going to select any big name actors to play any of the parts. Probably a bunch of unknown Brits. (unknown to us anyway) But if you must, dream on.
-
if Martin would just finish the damn books!
-
There is no question, Tyrion IS a Lannister. Not only from his looks, but how he acts, very in character for the family. And Ned is not a douche, he's committed to his king and his duty. He wanted to stay home but fealty led him south.
-
But I just wonder if Tyrion doesn't have a little Targaryen in him. Of course I'm just speculating. No harm in that.
-
because of the way he treated Jon Snow.
-
Actually, I'm speculating and hoping that won't be a line in the next book to the Targaryn girl "Would you like a litte Lannister in ya?"
I'd like Martin to finish the books too. But it is what it is. I hope he stays healthy. How many more books anyway? 3? -
I think there are supposed to be three more books, unless one gets too large and he decides to split it like he did Feast for Crows/Dance With Dragons.
-
I pre-ordered the date it came out, and it hasn't shipped yet. Same with others I know. You may want to take down the "SHIPPING NOW!!!!" Notice - "SHIPPING MAY 12!!!!" is still pretty soon.
-
Is that the announcement says that HBO has approved the Pilot, it says nothing about greenlighting the series. I'm just afraid that, given HBO's recent history of announcing things that never end up happening (Preacher, Deadwood movies), the suits and beancounters can still kill this.
-
You hate Ned because he took in Jon Snow and raised him as one of his own when 99% of the people in the book would have left him with his mother and never thought twice about him?
-
and have requested the second from the library.
Isn't Dinlage a bit old to be Tyrion? I don't know how much time elapses in the series, but he younger in the book I read.
I don't know how they will do this. Unless you cut out a LOT, it will take multiple seasons to get through the first book alone. I suppose you can leave the Dany stuff for a later season, but you still have enough cast and plot for the next few years. -
This is bay far the best fantasy series I've read in many, many years. there's so much cool stuff in this and so many incredible plot twists. the world of the seven Kingdom is one wicked and deadly place. It makes Deadwood look like a sunday afternoon at Disneyland.
-
Catelyn. She's pivotal to he series, but man do I hate her.
-
Well, first off, I wouldn't say that Ned Stark raised Jon Snow as his own. Seems like Jon was always made painfully aware that he was less than all of the other children. Second off, a character that seems like a pretty bad guy, Roose Bolton, raised his illegitimate son and even named him his heir, so I don't know why you think that 99% of Ned Stark's peers would have abandoned their illegitimate sons. Seems like the wealthy folk who could afford to kept their illegitimate children around. And lastly, Ned Stark swore an oath to the mother to raise Jon Stark, a very sacred oath given who I think the mother was. If I said more I might be guilty of speculation or even spoilers (if I'm right) but let's just say that the secret of Jon Snow's parentage is one pivotal to the entire story. I just believe that Ed Stark is a priggish little man more concerned with his honor than with the well being of his ward, and the existence of Jon Snow rankles him, and he shows it in many subtle ways. So I hate the prick.
-
The reason Jon is so aware of his bastardness is Cat not Ned. Cat hates him with all her heart and took every opportunity to show that. Ned raised Jon with his own children and treats him as one of his true born so yes I think he did a very honorable thing. Be angry at Cat not Ned.
Yes Bolton raises his bastard but only after his one and only heir dies, so Roose needs someone to carry on his name. Its only after his only true born son does, that Ramsay is bastard is brought into his household. Also, that's one example from the hundreds of houses in Westeros. Sure other lords raise or at least provide for their bastards, but I don't remember any examples of a lord raising them as well as Ned does with Jon.
And yes I understand he swore an oath, I'm right with you on the parentage but its quite obvious that Ned cares quite a bit for Jon. Go back and read Ned's chapter in the black cells. Also, your problem with Ned is his honor, but him keeping his oath disgraces his honor in his eyes. He is constantly tormented and pained by his secret. He raised Jon out of love even at the loss of his honor.
-
I'm with you guys. Ed's a good guy raising Jon and treating him as well as his other kids, it's Cat and Sansa who don't like him. He raised him with his kids and it's even mentioned that people looked at him as odd raising his bastard in court, but he was proud of Jon. We even have a couple great scenes of Jon with Arya, Bran and Rickon. Besides, the king left his bastard to be raised by a smithy! If it was not for Ed non would know or care.
-
I mean come on, he's not bad in the slightest. compared to the likes of Tywin, Vaergo Holt, Gregor Clegaine or sweet little Joffey.
-
Perfect casting in my humble opinion. His character in Band of Brothers was pretty damn close to Ned and he's british aaaand life has been cancelled so... Make it So!
-
... as the "Mountain that Rides." or whatever his nickname was. seriously, they need a giant for the roll anyway And yes, I have gotten two college degrees since the last book came out. Fucker is taking his sweet time.
-
It not that unusual when fans talk negatively about him. He has gotten death threats for the things he's done to some of the characters in these books. horrific things happen to his characters, to people you would normally think of as safe.
-
HODOR!
-
It's a bit like this:Take all the Orcs and Elves and wizardy bits out of 'LOTR', gene-splice it with 'Rome', hose the whole thing down with the essence of early Tudor England and finally add the plotting and machinations of 'The Godfather.'Then add loads of strong, believable characters who you root for one minute and despise the next and set them at each other's throats. Pick up a copy today - you won't be disappointed!BTW, I wanna play Syrio Forel! I've got the bald head and the big nose and I'll even bring my own fencing foils!
-
Hodor Hodor Hodor HODOR! Hodor Hodor Hodor?
-
Someone call Peter Mayhew. (perhaps too old?)
-
not exaggeratin' not even a little
-
Maybe takes his honor a bit too seriously but he did right by Jon Snow. Jon loves his father too, he thinks of him constantly in a positive light.
-
Ned is not Jon's father, old son! But you're right, these are absolutely stupendous books that demand to be read over and over...
-
Jamie's my favorite character. without a doubt. everyone always dismisses him as the douchbag frat boy quarterback... and he is to some degree. but he's really coming into his own. especailly in feast for crows. i have no idea who they'll cast as Jaime, but i hope whoever they get (and the director) don't just make him a one dimentional villain.
-
Besides Jon Snow of course, I really like this character and hope they cast someone like a former wrestler and/or bodybuilder like April Hunter for instance. She is a Red-Sonja-like character in the book and can take on the best swordman around because of her size and strength.
-
C'mon jon! Sonja is a hot Amazonian redhead, Brienne is a plain, bulky short-haired blonde.(Ironically, not too far from what Brigitte Nielsen herself looks like these days...)Personally, I've always thought the Russian artist Amoka got pretty close to how I see most of these characters in my head. Have a look here, my man. Let me know what you think!http://tinyurl.com/q8pemy
-
You gotta find a girl who's homely and built like a truck and doesn't mind the entire show making fun of it. If only Homer Simpson were a chick and had blond hair.
-
Psycho killer Quest que cest
Martin has some great female characters. -
She was born in November 2003. She'll probably have graduated by the time old George finishes the series...And yes, I can easily picture her becoming an assassin, too...
-
I hope she works through her entire list, or most of it anyway. She's already spared one person.
-
I haven't read the books in a few years. Boy was I wrong, she does not look anything like I thought, other than being very muscular. Yes she has straw color hair and blue eyes.
-
I still say that those two Lannisters should be played by Orlando Bloom and Victoria Pratt.
-
Emery Miller could play Brienne with some heavy makeup to her face. That's a very hard casting call, perhaps the hardest character to cast.
-
one of these days the next book will come...one of these days...
