VISITOR Director Tom McCarthy To Reunite With STATION AGENT Star Peter Dinklage For HBO’s GAME OF THRONES Pilot!!

Published at:  May 06, 2009 4:23:11 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“The Visitor” director Tom McCarthy is reuniting with his “Station Agent” star, Peter Dinklage, for HBO’s “A Game of Thrones” pilot, based on George R.R. Martin’s series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels .

These are apparently very long, grown-up fantasy novels, with thousands of characters – the major ones quite flawed and complex - and lots of sex, violence and political intrigue.

AICN got a tip in February that Dinklage was likely to be tapped for the role of Tyrion.

They will have to rough him up a little, Dinklage is a little too good looking for my image of Tyrion. Michael J Anderson (twin peaks) would have been neat, but really too old. Warwick Davis I don't see as serious enough, I suppose that means he seems the best I could think of

I even used all caps.Incredible series of stories; Martin takes the grit of realism and uses it to its literary height in a medieval setting. This series will blow peoples mind, especially if they see it on HBO. This is bascailly the kind of production that any medieval fan or fantasy fan has always dreamed of.

Wow, this is good news! I haven't seen "The Visitor" yet, but I loved "The Station Agent" for its funky characters, colorful cinematography, and unusual story. It's a film I often find myself thinking about, weirdly enough. I'm really excited to see what Tom McCarthy does with "A Game of Thrones."
Peter Dinklage is perfectly cast as Tyrion Lannister, and I think the role could be the actor's most memorable and iconic. I mean, Tyrion's a sly, scheming bastard for the most part, but when he shines, man does he shine. His quirks and penny-pinching belie a huge heart that cares for people more than rest of his incestuous asshole family ever does. And this is all due to his small person stature.
This series is shaping up great. Can't wait!

This is the essence of "cool news." The books are unequivocably badass, and Herc, I'm honestly not trying to be snarky here, but you should do yourself a favor and turn off the MTV reality shows and get into this series before it premieres; for geekcentric medieval/fantasy badassery, it's really *that* good. I got turned on to the books when I first met my ex... we were exchanging recommendations for entertainment, and I was championing The Wire as "the best thing ever," while she equally insisted that I read A Game of Thrones, and we agreed to give each other's choices a try. As it happened, I got about halfway through the first few chapters of intro and exposition before putting the book down with a "meh," while she kept falling asleep every time we'd try starting the first season of The Wire. Then a few months later, she started into the episodes herself and finally met Omar and was 100% hooked, and I picked up Game of Thrones again and got a few more chapters in (where the Kingslayer does his thing) and literally tore through the rest of the books like a madman. I think the comparison between the two is pretty apt, too... both have huge casts of complex characters that inhabit very realistically depicted worlds, where shifting allegiances to various institutions affect your view of characters as heroes or villains, and where EVERYONE is expendable when it comes to servicing the story. This is the kind of story that people always say, "they should do this as a sprawling HBO series," and this time they're actually doing it. And casting Dinklage as Tyrion, one of the more interesting and complicated characters, is a sign that they're doing it right.

I'm fucking stoked. I really hope the pilot is picked up by HBO, but half the fun will be seeing how the casting process evolves and how it aligns with what I've already envisioned. There's a great blog dedicated to this show at www.winter-is-coming.blogspot.com with some pretty good casting ideas and news. I just pray that HBO sticks with their decision and doesn't cheap out on this project with no resolution after a few great seasons, like they did with Deadwood. But the fact that it's gotten this far already, with the talent they've gotten onboard, has given me faith that we'll actually get to see this done right, and fairly soon. IMO, this could be better than LOTR, the kind of adult-oriented, smart fantasy TV show that we always beg for but never seem to see. Thanks for the TB, and keep the news coming, Herc!

Given that it's taken George R.R. Martin 4 years+ to finish this next book, and given that he's 60 and obese, and given that the next book won't be the last, well: not to be grim, but the actuarial tables paint a grim picture when it comes to him finishing this series.

plus remember that fat fuck Martin said he was "basically done" with the new book as soon as the last one was out, one can only imagine how long it wil take him to finish the series. They're his real middle initials. Back in the 1960s he kept getting asked if he was the Beatles manager, so he started using his initials on his professional work to avoid that problem.

    by eyeman

The Station Agent is the kind of great film that doesn't occur to you as being really good until you find yourself thinking about it again 4 years later.

Song of Ice and Fire was one of the sweetest series of books I read when I was 12. I grew out of the whole epic fantasy thing when I realized that reading DF Wallace, Don Delilo, and Thomas Pynchon was just as fun and would help me fuck hotter, smarter chicks. Still, looking back I realize that it will make a super bad-ass HBO series.

Just had an even better idea though-HBO miniseries of Gravities Rainbow. Who's with me? Slothrop's orgasms predict the V2 bombing of london! What's not to like?

Obviously casting the kid is gonna be the hardest part. They were aged up a couple years in the leaked script, but not much. And of course the producers are gonna want as many 18+ actors as possible simply for labor law purposes. As for the public's opinion of all the sex and death among the youth in the story... if this series makes it past all the other obstacles it faces, i'm sure it'll overcome a buncha conservative group boycotts.

By "kid" i meant "kids." Daenyrs, Joffrey, Sansa, Jojen, Arya, Robb, Jon, Meera and Bran. Safe to say Dany, Robb and Jon will be played by 18-20 yr old actors, but the rest can't be, unless they change actors at some point. "I may have never seen a camel, but I know a camel's cunt when I smell one." Only Martin could write a line like that for a 9 year old girl from a royal house.

Tyrion is the disfigured, dwarfish son of normal human parents belonging to one of the most powerful houses in the land. He's a complex and central character; even though his family are the antagonists (at least in the first book), he has a soft side to go along with his vices and sarcastic wit.

    by maelstrom_zero

Because I read the Wheel of Time series, which is similar in its 2045+ characters, sprawling epic-ness, and political intrigue. . .and while it was good for about the first 4 books or so, it collapsed under its own weight. The central focus became hazy, plot points became convoluted, endless tangents were followed, and every woman became a doe-eyed sex slave waiting to get into Rand's pants.

There is so much wrong with the script that I really don't think there is much hope for the series with the same guy in charge. Lines were changed just for the sake of changing and aren't at all an improvement from their equivalent in the books. I don't know how they will do this. Unless you cut out a LOT, it will take multiple seasons to get through the first book alone. I suppose you can leave the Dany stuff for a later season, but you still have enough cast and plot for the next few years.

Almost halfway done with the third

This is bay far the best fantasy series I've read in many, many years. there's so much cool stuff in this and so many incredible plot twists. the world of the seven Kingdom is one wicked and deadly place. It makes Deadwood look like a sunday afternoon at Disneyland.

Well, first off, I wouldn't say that Ned Stark raised Jon Snow as his own. Seems like Jon was always made painfully aware that he was less than all of the other children. Second off, a character that seems like a pretty bad guy, Roose Bolton, raised his illegitimate son and even named him his heir, so I don't know why you think that 99% of Ned Stark's peers would have abandoned their illegitimate sons. Seems like the wealthy folk who could afford to kept their illegitimate children around. And lastly, Ned Stark swore an oath to the mother to raise Jon Stark, a very sacred oath given who I think the mother was. If I said more I might be guilty of speculation or even spoilers (if I'm right) but let's just say that the secret of Jon Snow's parentage is one pivotal to the entire story. I just believe that Ed Stark is a priggish little man more concerned with his honor than with the well being of his ward, and the existence of Jon Snow rankles him, and he shows it in many subtle ways. So I hate the prick.

    Couldn't disagree with you more

    by santiagoanddunbar

The reason Jon is so aware of his bastardness is Cat not Ned. Cat hates him with all her heart and took every opportunity to show that. Ned raised Jon with his own children and treats him as one of his true born so yes I think he did a very honorable thing. Be angry at Cat not Ned.

Yes Bolton raises his bastard but only after his one and only heir dies, so Roose needs someone to carry on his name. Its only after his only true born son does, that Ramsay is bastard is brought into his household. Also, that's one example from the hundreds of houses in Westeros. Sure other lords raise or at least provide for their bastards, but I don't remember any examples of a lord raising them as well as Ned does with Jon.

And yes I understand he swore an oath, I'm right with you on the parentage but its quite obvious that Ned cares quite a bit for Jon. Go back and read Ned's chapter in the black cells. Also, your problem with Ned is his honor, but him keeping his oath disgraces his honor in his eyes. He is constantly tormented and pained by his secret. He raised Jon out of love even at the loss of his honor.

    Ed/Jon

    by omar b

I'm with you guys. Ed's a good guy raising Jon and treating him as well as his other kids, it's Cat and Sansa who don't like him. He raised him with his kids and it's even mentioned that people looked at him as odd raising his bastard in court, but he was proud of Jon. We even have a couple great scenes of Jon with Arya, Bran and Rickon. Besides, the king left his bastard to be raised by a smithy! If it was not for Ed non would know or care.

The Ned hate is too funny

    by mrj

I mean come on, he's not bad in the slightest. compared to the likes of Tywin, Vaergo Holt, Gregor Clegaine or sweet little Joffey.

Perfect casting in my humble opinion. His character in Band of Brothers was pretty damn close to Ned and he's british aaaand life has been cancelled so... Make it So!

get Paul White for this series

    by hatemphd

... as the "Mountain that Rides." or whatever his nickname was. seriously, they need a giant for the roll anyway And yes, I have gotten two college degrees since the last book came out. Fucker is taking his sweet time.

Also, about the author hate in these talk backs...

    by hatemphd

It not that unusual when fans talk negatively about him. He has gotten death threats for the things he's done to some of the characters in these books. horrific things happen to his characters, to people you would normally think of as safe.

To those TalkBackers who've never read these books...

    by biggusdickus

It's a bit like this:Take all the Orcs and Elves and wizardy bits out of 'LOTR', gene-splice it with 'Rome', hose the whole thing down with the essence of early Tudor England and finally add the plotting and machinations of 'The Godfather.'Then add loads of strong, believable characters who you root for one minute and despise the next and set them at each other's throats. Pick up a copy today - you won't be disappointed!BTW, I wanna play Syrio Forel! I've got the bald head and the big nose and I'll even bring my own fencing foils!

    Jaime

    by marinox

Jamie's my favorite character. without a doubt. everyone always dismisses him as the douchbag frat boy quarterback... and he is to some degree. but he's really coming into his own. especailly in feast for crows. i have no idea who they'll cast as Jaime, but i hope whoever they get (and the director) don't just make him a one dimentional villain.

    Brienne of Tarth

    by jonsnow

Besides Jon Snow of course, I really like this character and hope they cast someone like a former wrestler and/or bodybuilder like April Hunter for instance. She is a Red-Sonja-like character in the book and can take on the best swordman around because of her size and strength.

Brienne is a Red Sonja type?

    by biggusdickus

C'mon jon! Sonja is a hot Amazonian redhead, Brienne is a plain, bulky short-haired blonde.(Ironically, not too far from what Brigitte Nielsen herself looks like these days...)Personally, I've always thought the Russian artist Amoka got pretty close to how I see most of these characters in my head. Have a look here, my man. Let me know what you think!http://tinyurl.com/q8pemy

You gotta find a girl who's homely and built like a truck and doesn't mind the entire show making fun of it. If only Homer Simpson were a chick and had blond hair.

Emery Miller could play Brienne with some heavy makeup to her face. That's a very hard casting call, perhaps the hardest character to cast.
