Capone bathes in the glorious blue Romulan ale that is J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK!!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
I've noticed a lot of people who have reviewed this film so far have felt obligated to detail their personal history for the STAR TREK franchise over the decades. Fair enough, although one of many beautiful things about J.J. Abrams' indecently entertaining take on the TREK universe is that it truly doesn't matter how much history you have with many series and feature films. My STAR TREK history is simple: I worshipped the original series, never watched a single episode of any of the follow-up series, and faithfully lined up every few years to see each new film version on the day it opened. I loved that the original series wasn't afraid to laugh at itself as often as it took itself with a degree of seriousness usually reserved for medical dramas or detective shows. When I was young, I never noticed that almost everything was done on the cheap and that Captain Kirk seemed to care as much about his hair and his blinding-glow tan as he did about saving his crew and his ship. I focused on and admired the moral code that Starfleet operated under, and that the show's creators saw space travel as more than just jaunts from the earth to the moon or to Mars. This show was the first indication in my young mind that space went on forever, in every direction.
What I've had to endure in recent years (through reportedly subpar TV episodes and lesser films) is a franchise that has been bleeding integrity. J.J. Abrams' job with his new STAR TREK film wasn't to reboot it--anyone who calls this a reboot is truly missing the essence of this movie--it was to save it and breathe new life into it by making us see these characters in ways we'd never dreamed possible. These are the same men and women who took us into space in 1966; none of the characters have been radically reinvented, and their core personality traits and flaws are all still here for all the faithful to see. What Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have done is build a world before the series that will impact the world during and after the series. They haven't hit the 'Reset' button exactly, but they have taken the events we know, rewound them to the beginning, and laid out the possibility that things may not play out the same way the second time around. I'm making this sound far more complicated than it actually is, because what I'm really impressed with is that the creative team behind STAR TREK have made the first real film in the franchise that doesn't feel like an extended version of a TV episode. That said, I have no idea where Abrams and Co. could possibly go from here in a way that won't feel like episodic television. I can't imagine these characters in anyone else's hands right now, or anyone else playing these fine folks, but time will tell.
You've probably already read 50 plot synopses of STAR TREK at this point, but let me just point out a few thing I particularly liked. Chris Pine is the shit. He doesn't have to try too hard to remind us that James T. Kirk liked to bed women of every race, type, and species. But I'm guessing that Kirk had just as big a boner when he was doing something death defying as he did when he was mastering the art of interstellar seduction. The man was an adrenaline junkie, and the look in his eyes when he's hanging off an ice cliff or getting ready to trade photon torpedoes with an enemy ship is the same one he has when he sees a new woman he wants to conquer. Pine walks through this film like he's packing a 12-inch stiffy right alongside his phaser. I also like that the film unapologetically acknowledges that Lt. Uhura is a stone cold fox. She was the Pam Grier of the stars, and while Zoe Saldana doesn't quite have the slow-burn quality of Nichelle Nichols, I had no trouble believing that more than one member of this crew had the hots for her.
Karl Urban IS Dr. McCoy, plain and simple. Perhaps more than any other cast member, Urban delivers lines that have worked their way into the lexicon, but he manages to do so in a way that sounds like actual dialogue and not like verbal tips of the hat to the series. It kind of gave me chills to hear him say, "Dammit, Jim..." and realize that it was the first of thousands of times he would say it. I love that John Cho's Sulu is a brilliant swordsman and proves it the first chance he gets (and no, that's not a gay joke), and that the on-board computer has trouble penetrating Chekov's (Anton Yelchin) thick Russian accent. Almost more than anything, I love how Mr. Scott (Simon Pegg) is introduced into the story--perhaps a bit too late in the story for my tastes, but Pegg swarthy Scottish accent makes up for his late entry into the plot; I can honestly say I did not see that coming.
Eric Bana in full berserker rage plays Nero, a Romulan from the future who couldn't give a shit about the time-space continuum or how badly he's going to fuck up the future by doing things in the past that weren't done the first time around. In fact, that's kind of his point. He effectively creates a world in which people are dead who aren't supposed to be dead, worlds are destroyed that are clearly a full-blown part of the original series and movie worlds. Nero makes us realize that it is time, and not space, that is the final frontier. Bana's performance is almost too good to believe, and you can't quite hate his character because there's clearly so much pain behind his black eyes and warrior face tattoos. His villainy is built on raw emotion; he's carrying the weight of billions of dead Romulans in his heart, and he wants Spock (whose future self is somehow responsible for those deaths) to feel his pain. Nero is one of the most layered and interesting foils these people will every face.
So let's talk about the many faces of Spock. One of the best things about STAR TREK is that, with just a few adjustments here and there, the role of Spock from the future (played, of course, by Leonard Nimoy) didn't even have to be in this film. This story could have been told without him, and it would have worked just fine. But by including him and his deep, gravely voice and well-etched wrinkles, we gain a sense of meaning and history in the movie that could not be achieved any other way. More importantly, Spock Prime shows far more of his human side than the young Spock (Zachary Quinto) realizes is possible. Quinto is quite good in this role, especially when he allows his emotions to get the better of him and he lashes out at those who push his buttons. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss Nimoy's baritone voice and rising eyebrow, which always made me laugh. I'm sure after seeing the film a second time that I'll get over these small things…maybe.
I'd be horribly remiss if I didn't also say a thing or two about the inclusion of Bruce Greenwood as Capt. Christopher Pike, the Captain of the Enterprise before Kirk. "The Cage" was always one of my favorite "Star Trek" storylines, and I love that Pike's fate in this movie is one of the first indications that the future is being rewritten as the result of Nero's actions.
The special effects in STAR TREK are beyond reproach. They are furious and magnificently realized, and it's clear to me that Abrams learned a little something from the way "Battlestar Galactica" space battles were staged and shot. The hand-held quality of these sequences are unmistakable, and the way that the noise from inside a starship turns into dead quiet when a person or shuttle leaves its confines is something I've been dying to see (and hear) for a very long time.
Although reviews of this film thus far have been across-the-board positive, this inevitably means that the contrarians are right around the corner. STAR TREK is not perfect (the transitions between deadly serious moments and the often downright silly humor could have been a little less jarring), but it is exactly what I needed to see from this world and these characters. At this point, I think fans (both diehards and the those of the more casual variety) don't need STAR TREK to be perfect; they need it to be good. This film exceeds those desires to be one of the most consistently entertaining large-scale films I've seen in a very long time, one that fulfills the needs of longtime admirers while still acting as an inviting entry point into this corner of the science-fiction galaxy. Whatever your background, I'm guessing the extremely thrilling and satisfying STAR TREK will hit the spot.

Will see it this weekend.
-
That's too bad. The later seasons of TNG not only matched the original series, I think it actually surpassed it in both vision and entertainment level. And a couple of seasons of DS9 were pretty stellar as well. Sure, the rest of DS9 got repetitive, and Voyager and Enterprise are instantly forgettable, but to ignore the legacy of TNG is a real shame. At its best it was great Trek, great science fiction, and great drama.
-
you basically said that vulcan is destroyed and Pike dies...WTF!
-
"Pine walks through this film like he's packing a 12-inch stiffy right alongside his phaser." No comment. // BTW, the redundancy in this site's reviews is like having 12 different definitions for "superfluous." I would bet that even the studio suits are averting their eyes in half-shame.
-
Can't wait. Hell, even my anti-geek culture GF is ecstatic to watch this film. This could be big, very BIG.
-
Vulcan is destroyed and Pike dies?!? Way to ruin it, Cap'n Jack!

Pine walks through this film like he's packing a 12-inch stiffy
by bob parr
Loved that line! Liked the review too. Grew up watching the series, and I too never wanted to watch TNG until I caught an episode of DS9, then I went and caught up on all of the Treks over the years. They were all entertaining, some flawed and dissappointing (especially "Enterprise"), but I enjoyed them all none the less. Looking forward to the the movie.

See that big giant box around the headline on the opening AICN page? See the word "Spoiler"? That's what we in the business call a gigantic fucking spoiler alert. And at least one of your presumptions of something I've spoiled is incorrect.
-
Nice review...thanks.
-
Nice review, Capone. Just when I didn't think I could be anymore stoked to see this movie...

AICN you guys are dropping the ball! IGN again scoops you guys. -
Great view! So excited to see this movie.. J.J. is the shit!
-
I am also with Capone on only seeing the original series. I had no interest in the other series. I did try to watch an episode or two of the next generation, but found it uninteresting and not compelling. The original series always had a sense of urgency and importance and knew the value of having three main characters play out the episodes. Whenever I flip through the channels and see the original series, I am compelled to stop and watch.
-
cause im seeing it in imax tomorrow night. I'm sure it's a good review, and i'll comment tomorrow night after seeing it for myself! i'm really trying to avoid everything about this movie, i want to be genuinley surprised for once! <3 star trek
-
I try to write and send you a review as soon as I come home, but if it won't be published (again), you can read it in The Zone.
-
Though I'm surprised- I thought we already had a Trek review from Capone?
-
Capone, if you get the itch to check out any of the later series, remember that one of the masterminds behind the newer BSG (Ron Moore) had a heavy influence in DS9. You still get the occasional mediocre episode, but there were plenty of episodes that focused on religion, politics, and espionage in mind-blowing fashion. And any series that has Tony Todd in two roles (Worf's brother, future version of Sisko's son) can't be all bad.
-
All I know is I always hates TOS and TNG. The continual pressing of a "reset" button after each episode prevented me from ever wanting to invest in the show, unlike Babylon 5 which actually had a serialized plot and a real momentum.
That being said, is DS9 any good? I never watched it back in the day, but someone told me it actually had a serialized story about a Dominion War which is supposedly fairly well written? -
Yes, DS9 is good. You mentioned Babylon 5 and the way the story unfolds is pretty similar. First we got lots of episodes of the week, then we get hints at a bigger storyline and THEN (definitely from the beginning of Season 4) it becomes a seriously great show. Probably a little bit dated, considering how story arcs in TV series are handed today, but really worth your time.
-
I can't fucking wait to see this.
-
yeah, watch this video, lol.

-
Okay, not an important reason, but Iggy Pop was a guest star in one episode. :))
-
DS9 is probably the best ST series out there. Yes, TNG had its moments, but DS9 was a realistic, post-modern take on the ST universe. There were overarching arcs dealing with the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, the Maquis rebel group, Cisco's role as the Emissary, which all led to the war with the Dominion.
Truth be told, it *is* a little dated. . .some episodes I found to be terribly boring, and it wasn't as serial-focused as, say, 24 or Lost or BSG. But when all is said and done, I walked away from DS9 feeling fairly confident that it was the best Trek series out there--yes, even beating out Picard and TNG. -
Have you ever seen a better Star Trek Episode than "Far Beyond The Stars"?
-
Some of us get headlines from the RSS feed and don't see any black boxes or spoiler tags that you are referring to. Maybe add "-- Spoiler" to the headlines?

I hurt my brain
I need to lay down -
I remember watching some episodes a few years ago, and how eerily current events (terrorism, war in Iraq, religious fundamentalism) were to what was going on in the show.
-
I haven't seen a movie so openly fellated on this site. Ever.
-
hands down better
-
I am avoiding spoilers and just read the first couple of paragraphs of this review and part of the last one. I got the essence of the review without the spoilers. But if you ever read a review, you are obviously risking reading spoileresque text...just blame yourself and not the reviewer.
-
More in the way the storyarc unfolds, compared to todays cliffhanger-heavy TV shows. But it's still very watchable.
-
I saw the movie last night in a screening, and I agree about everything you say. In truth, a few of the plot points should be absolutely aggravating, but they work so well in the context of the film. There are certainly some flaws (upon reflection they are more akin to gaps or breezed-over explanations) but they never really detract from the movie. For those who say this is both a prequel and a sequel, they are correct. Is this a reboot? No way. I think Chris Pine owns Kirk. I think that Zoe Saldana rocked Uhura. Liked Chekov and Sulu. I like Bones, but he talks like he has marbles in his mouth. And Spock needs to have a more emotive voice. Scotty was awesome too.
-
I have not seen so many DS9 lovers in a long long time. For my money, DS9 was a terrific show...deep, textured, layered, and not afraid to explore the frontier within.
-
By dated, I didn't mean the actual content of the show. I meant more of the execution. Most shows nowadays are arc-focused, serialized dramas, where if you miss one episode, you're absolutely lost as to what happened if you jump in an episode later. That's certainly the case with 24 or Lost or Supernatural. DS9 wasn't strictly an arc-based serialized drama until the last 7-9 episodes of the last season. Everything before that, if you missed an episode, you could still figure out what was going on.

It's hard to watch him talk in interviews, poor guy. Maybe they don't fit correctly.

Chopper! Neville?!
-
Used to love it. Recently downloaded some, and watched them again for the first time in years. Not a huge Trek fan anymore, but episodes I'd say were worth anyone's time are: "our man bashir","the assignment", "trials and tribulations", "far beyond the stars", "one little ship", "in the pale moonlight". And any where Rom has a prominent role; Max Grodenchik was hilarious in retrospect.
-
And I'll be there. I haven't been this excited since Generations came out!
-
To be fair to Cap'n Jack, your review didn't need any spoilers at all & your reply to him was pretty fucking harsh.
You know as well as I do, that a good reviewer spends as much time as he can, finding a way to write his opinions without any spoilers at all, even finding ways to reference the events & the reasons he liked them, without giving those events away. Not just thinking "Fuck it, let's stick it in a box."
I did your job for years, albeit for a newspaper. If I handed in a review with spoilers I'd either be made to redo it/have it edited by somebody else, or it wouldn't be printed. So he was well within his rights & your ego rampage high-horsing "that's what we in the business call a gigantic fucking spoiler alert" is a bit too cocky.
Spoilers are what we in the REAL business call lazy, unprofessional pseudo journalism.
You can rant at me like you did at him, but I'll still be right. I'm going to bed..SPOILER..I may sleep more soundly than you, as I won't have JJ's hairy tribbles in my mouth.
-
And I love how his character evolved. Not to mention that he probably spoke the first and only masturbation joke in Star Trek!
-
Capone says the new actors play the old parts well. Example: "Karl Urban IS Dr. McCoy, plain and simple"But Herc says the new actors bear little resemblance to the old roles. What gives?!? Which is it?
-
What was the masturbation joke??
-
now i'm getting interested in this movie...

My fav trek show
Stanton you forgot The Magnificent Ferengi -
That's right. Just saw it and it's mediocre. Pretty good but too many things that just don't make sense, Nimoy there merely for exposition and too many cutesy smiles amongst the crew. Guess I'm just too old, this made me miss the old show even more.
-
about what?
that it needed a doughy old man instead of a lean old man? -
In one episode Rom has an ear infection and he says he had too much Umox(Y'know, the Ferengi ear stroking. Don't know how it's written). Then someone (I think it was Leeta) asked him who he had it with and he replies that in fact it was him.
(Sorry for spelling or grammar mistakes, I'm in a hurry, because my buddy picks me up to watch Star Trek!!!) -
You contradict yourself. "Just saw it and it's mediocre." Then your next sentence, "Pretty good...". Make your mind up dude.
-
I think is the best Star Trek episode. EVER.
After that is the one where the Holodoc falls in love with Seven. -
Capone's review is well writen and on itself it's a pleasant read. But i have to say, i take Capone's reviews of blockbusters with a pitch of salt. Capone is always dead on about art house, indies and foreign mvoies, but about blockbusters, all bets are off. Therefore, his take on Jay Jay's Star Trek doesn't convince me either. I'll have to wait for Mrs Alexandra DuPont and Vern to actually get word from aAICN reviewer i can trust. until then, all this gushing praising just reeks of the worst case of selling out from AICN in all it's history.
-
It was DS9 !
-
Because Jadzia Dax was the hottest woman on Star Trek. FACT.
-
Unless i'm too mistaken, "In The Pale Moonlight" is a Deep Space Nine episode, not Voyager.By the way, The Hitcher (1985) kicks ass, an excelent thriller. The remake, however, is fucking shit.
-
... with the hot Dabo (sp?) Girl wife. WTK was up with that?
-
Yeah - the Magnificent Ferengi was up there, as well as Prophet Motive. Star Trek doesn't get funnier than Wallace Shawn being kidnapped while humming in a sack.
"Far beyond the stars" was the best though - it just encapsulated Star Trek. I have to say though that Star Trek lost its balls in the 90s. Roddenberry could put blacks, whites, Americans and Russians together in space with interracial kisses, but in the 24th century homosexuality didn't exist?! I was a big fan, but it did get eunuchised by Paramount's profit-machine. -
never said it was Voyager. That episode works even as a stand-alone. I liked voyager though. It had some pretty good episodes. Maybe I was just at the right age at that time. Or the hate-vibe just did not reach europe.
-
well 30 or so actually
Some friends went to one of the first ST conventions
Might have been the first, don't really recall the details.
This was before they started charging for autographs, it was a more relaxed event I think.
They invited me to go, but I passed. (wish I hadden't)
They had most of the cast excluding Shat and Nimoy I think.
Speakers, and booths, but the highlight to my friends was the bar.
James Doohan hung out in the bar the whole convention.
Was a great guy. Flirt with the girls, shake the guys hands. Sit and have a drink and tell stories.
Was a consummate gentleman celebrity.
Man, I wish I'd went

How can you forget "The Visitor"?
I'm tearing up just thinking about it.
That was DS9's best. -

itds not even shaky as in hand held - the camera shifts horizontally left or right a few degrees for no reason - why - when i shoot something i dont have to make it look even more hand held by randomly shifting the frame left or right for no reason - lame and im sick of it - save that shit for er or the shield - this is star trek - respect it - imagine lawrence of arabia shot like this - all shifty and shaky and full of lens flares worse than you get with high 8 video - enjoy the trend while it last you gen y sheep
-
And if Miss DuPont and Vern don't agree with you, then what? You'll keep searching til you find someone who does so you can say "I told you so..." Someone you can "trust" would be someone that agrees with you, how very sad you are. What is the color of the sky on your world today, you SYCOPHANTIC ASS LEECH? Conspiracy, Conspiracy!!

"to save it and breathe new life into it by making us see these characters in ways we'd never dreamed possible" - yup, that's pretty much a reboot. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but don't deny it's a reboot. And really, not one episode of Next Generation and Deep Space Nine? 2 shows that redefined television science fiction that, at their best, far surpassed the original series in scope and depth? I understand the groundbreaking nature of the show at the time and the 60s fanboy love for the old characters - I share it - but let's not pretend the old show was anything more than bravado and some decent ideas wrapped around a core of schlock. Note - if you want to know why Nero blames Spock, read the Countdown comic, written by the film's screenwriters. Maybe they explain it and the film and Capone missed it, but it's in the comics.
finally, that 'hand-held' quality done in Battlestar Galactica was first done in Firefly, and it was a technique the BSG effects guys adapted. So give credit where it's due. Seeing this tomorrow night, and can't wait, despite Capone's kinda annoying review. Tonight, though, it's all about Leonard Cohen in Chi-Town. -
And yet if every review on this site trashed if it was a bad film, would somehow make the reviewers more credible? Maybe the film is actually good. Anything is possible
-
Glad to see I'm not the only one that episode rips to shreads. I start crying when I see the opening sequence and don't stop until an hour after its over.
-
When Troi's mom is kidnapped by Ferengi, she pretends to be one of the Fergengi's love-slave to give Ryker and Troi time to find a way to escape, and starts lovingly stroking his large ears. The ferengi makes strange noises and when Troi's mom asks what the deal is, he replies something like "The ear is our largest erogenous zone."
-
I mean everything I've heard about this film basically shits on everything I've loved about star trek, and I know that if I go I will be disappointed, but still there is a tiny piece of me that hopes. I've said that I am not going to go see this movie, but still...

Looks like Star Trek will not get 100% on RT, thanks to our old friend Armond White of New York Press. Congrats Armond, your agenda has officially been acknowledged!

"Pine walks through this film like he's packing a 12-inch stiffy right alongside his phaser." --AintItCool.com
Absolutely brilliant -
Don't be an idiot. If you're reading a review of a film, expect spoilers. It's your fault.
-
With every single review dumping unending praise on this flick, I'm finally STARTING to get really excited about it. But, that being said, I'm still prejudiced by how much I dislike Chris Pine (from what I'm seen of him, which I admit is only from the trailers) and how much Sula-as-portrayed-by-a-Korean-actor causes irrational cognitive dissonance in my puny brain. I KNOW it shouldn't, but it does. Sulu is Japanese, not Korean, dammit! To me, it's like having Kevin Costner play Robin Hood with an American accent. It just is.
Still, only two more sleeps until opening day! You know I'll still be laying down my $10. -
Here's what nobody seems to be saying about the "time traveling reset button" premise: if it created an alternate timeline, why did Spock have to go back there? It's an alternate timeline, nobody HE knows is gonna get hurt, and by virtue of creating an alternate timeline, the Hulk's brilliant plan is automatically rendered moot, since the Spock HE'S after isn't gonna be affected by his schemes. In fact, does this mean there's an alternate timeline every goddamn instance somebody in STAR TREK time travels, like in IV, or that episode where Spock had to wear a ski cap? Why not just have the nuts to go "Okay, it changed everything, there ain't gonna be no more Data or Gary Seven, folks, throw out your model kits!" OR, even more nutsy, just say "We're rebooting the goddamn original series, since flip-clock technology ain't gonna fly in 2009! Be a man and suck it up!"
-
If Alexandra DuPunt and Vern likes this movie, then it will give me pause in my deel skepticism. It's not that i haven't disagree with them before, but i do respect trheir opinion a hell of a lot and they are, by far, the most intelligent of the AICN reviewers and the least prone to kiss the asses of filmamkers and to be involved in sell out schemes.and i'm sorry if i'm pissing in your parade, but frankly, all this gushing going on about Jay Jay's Star Trek, and given his past history (writer of Armageddon) and with all that i have learned about the movie, enven form the people praising it, it gives me a very convincing image that this movie is one big piece of shallow ass crappitude and a new redefinition of the concept of over-hype.
-
$10 regular theater, $16.50 IMAX
-
I've never been a real big fan of STAR TREK but I have enjoyed a fair share of its various incarnations. I rather liked TNG but prefered the movies with the original cast. That being said, I'm now somewhat interested in checking this out. If it's smart and contains any of the mojo that made the franchise what it is, then I'm there.
-
and what is any syncopanthic in my attitude? If anything, i'm the polar oposite of syncopanchy that's going on about this movie. It's AICN's reviewers who hare showing of the worst case of sycopanchy since ever in their how website history to a filmmaker and his movie. Do you even know what sycophancy means?

FAPFAPFAPFAPFAPFAPFAPFAPFAPFAP...FAP. In this case, it may be warranted. But, According_To Noted_Sage Yack_Backer-and I quothe----NEEDS GIANT ROBOTS. I most heartily, agree.

Well said regarding "ASSHATLives". That guy looks for stuff that doesn't exist and he wants this movie to fail simply because he doesn't like J.J. Abrams.

Go figure...
-
What's up you crazy bastard!EVERYTHING NEEDS GIANT ROBOTS!
-
-I agree!
-
Here's why I think it's important to Spock:
Star Trek has already established that an "alternate timeline" is not the same thing as an "alternate universe". As such, an alternate timeline can OVERWRITE the timeline that a character knows and loves.
For example, the Mirror Universe is an alternate universe. As such, if someone dies in the Mirror Universe it shouldn't really matter to someone from the "primary" universe.
But when the Enterprise-C travelled forward in time to meet with the Enterprise-D, it created an alternate timeline that SUPERCEDED the primary timeline. As such, the characters decided that the Enterprise-C had to be sent back to meet its own destruction (while taking Tasha Yar with it, which caused all sorts of problems later on).
Also, when the Enterprise-E went back to the day before Cochrane launches into space, they briefly glimpse the alternate timeline that the Borg have created.
The "alternate timeline" in both these examples are NOT "alternate universes" that exist ALONGSIDE the "primary universe". They are timelines that have been written over the primary timeline, and the characters are only aware of the change because (in the Enterprise-C incident) Guinan happens to be a member of a species that's particularly sensitive to temporal physics or (in the case of First Contact) the phenomenon that allows them to travel through time shields them from the changes to the timeline.
So, following the internal logic of established Trek physics (as opposed to real-life physics), Spock going back in time to fix the damage Nero does is perfectly feasible. It all depends on how the writers explain it. Either Vulcans share the same temporal sensitivity that Guinan's species enjoys, or Spock is shielded from the changes in the timeline because he's caught up in the same phenomenon that Nero uses to go back in time.
Or, the writers come up with some new explanation that doesn't contradict established Trek physics.
Or, the writers fuck up and it actually ends up making no sense.
I'll see for myself on Friday. -
Nuff said?

I don't think there's an IMAX screen in my town showing it. At any rate, I've never seen a non-educational IMAX film before, but that doesn't mean I haven't been living under a rock. So I'll revise and state that I'll PROBABLY be laying down $10 on Friday. However, I'll gladly pay the IMAX tax if it's an option.
(BTW: Blue Planet is THE BEST IMAX flick they show at museum IMAX screens. You totally feel like you'd fall UP if you jumped out of your seat. Total . . . fucking . . . vertigo. Wild stuff.) -
It makes sense Royston... saw it with Capone's group last Thursday. It is really a good movie... I never see movies twice at the theater... I am going to see these a minimum of 2-3 times... I never do that... I always see a movie, if I enjoy it... Blu-Ray... but I have to see this again!

I did some archeological diggings in this site, and i discovered Moriarty's review of Jay Jay Abram's script for Superman, back in the day when it was a project where Michael Bay was attatched as director. And Moriarty's review is merciless in it's complete demolition of Jay Jay's script. And not jsut moriarty's, but the general reaction from the geeks to Moriarty's review. and onething i noticed: Jay Jay is pulling out with Star Trek the same stunts he was pulling for Superman. Only, the same things he was insulte,d and rightly so, for Superman, he's being prised for Star trek. so it mamde me wonder, what's different this time? The answer to that is simple: back then, Jay Jay was a nobody. He was just a writer for hire. He was not Mr Lost. He barely registed as a name. He was this guy you hired on the cheap to polish aopmebody's else scripts. So, what Moriarty did was he reviewed a Jay Jay work in a very pure state. And it is teling what a loser this guy is as a talent for writing scripts. As in, not much talent at all. His Superman's script reads as a colelctions ofmoment imagined by an egomaniac foll whith a too big of an image of himself who thinks nothingof being faithful to any type of canon in existence, who has downright despise for anything created by anybody else but himself, and who remourselessly to shove his enourmous ego into everything. but when he was a nobody, and when he was a powerless tool, he got his just desert wioth the maerciles criticism he got from Moriarty.Cue half a decade afterwards, and Jay Jay is now a powerhouse, a self-anointed genious to TV. And he learned how to play AICN and other critics to serve his game. He learned the art of media manipulation. And he knows a lot of backstage deal making. and nowdays, the very shit he tried to pull for Superman and for which he was justly berated, he's being praised for Star Trek. Yeah, right! This is not bullshit at all, no sir!!! What i find hillarious is how everybody now is kissing his ass on somebody who is more of a media sensation then anything else, an arch-manipulator, and who can sucessfully buy off a whole website like AICN for his biding. i bet Jay Jay promised a whole world of favours and oportunities for the AICN crew. It is also obvious that he will not be good on his word, after all the dust settles. AICN is bneing played for fools, and they are eating it all up unquestionably. This has happened before with AICN, with Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer, and yet they haven't yet learned the lesson. Unbelievable!
-
one of the best DS9 episodes - it's one of the best Trek episodes ever. Anything with Garrak in is worth watching really. DS9 was underated - showed a new side to the Trek universe and also developed characters like no other series did. They felt real and you watched them grow and evolve as people. Not so much of that in the other Trek shows.
-
Bale woulçd never bless this crap. This is the work of a devil, aka, Jay Jay. The Bale would never apprve of this, and if you think otherwise, you are not a true faithful of Bale. Shame on you.

BojTrek: Here's what I'm looking forward to finding out...
by royston lodge
(and don't spoil it for me by explaining how they do it. I wanna see for myself.)
If there are more movies in pre-production that take place in this "alternate timeline", doesn't that mean that old-Spock has ultimately FAILED in his mission to repair Nero's damage? Or does it mean that Spock has figured out a way to convert an "alternate timeline" into an "alternate universe"?
Or, did the writers fuck up and it actually ends up making no sense... -
just awesome 'adventure of the week' shows. And TNG two-parters kicked arse. But DS9 always wins out on storyline and characterisation for me. That being said, Wrath of Khan is unbeatable in terms of Trek movies :D

Star Trek has languished with poor writing for some time (I say going back to Voyager, though others include DS9. I leave that debate for another day.)
As such, allowing J.J. to come in and play around with stuff is acceptable because it's generally recognized that Trek needs something to give it a shot in the arm.
Superman, on the other hand, is old enough that it has reached the level of mythology. To fuck around with Superman too much is to violate something primal in the American cultural consciousness.
It would be like if the Walt Disney Company tried to "reboot" Mickey Mouse. It would just ... be ... wrong.
Trek, for all it's fans, it not at nearly the same level of cultural significance as Superman.
Theory #2:
Maybe JJ's Superman script did suck, and JJ'S Star Trek doesn't. -
I spit in the face of Bale, and all who worship at the hem of his unholy garments! Piss be upon him!
-
doth not forgive you
-
That's like Hitler complaining about the mistreatment of Jews.
-
Though the first couple of seasons are pretty slow, by the end of season 3 this show had pretty strong legs. Seasons 4-7 are the strongest ST ever produced and are still very culturally relevant today. Maybe even more so. Everything that made BSG great was litmus tested in DS9.
I recently watched all seven seasons with my wife, and enjoyed them as much as when they were new.
I miss this show more than any other TV show I've ever seen, but the show ended so well, you never really needed more. Though I still had to read the follow-up novels.
I get tears every time I hear the song "The Way You Look Tonight".
I know he was a small character, but I loved Vic Fontaine. -
I pray He has mercy on your soul.
-
I agree wholeheartedly when it comes to DS9, but I the constant love for Wrath of Khan often seems overblown, IMHO.
Don't get me wrong, Wrath of Khan rocks.
But Search for Spock also rocks, AND Robin Curtis is a WAAAAY better Vulcan than Kirsty Alley. Kirsty's version of Saavik comes "this close" to ruining the movie for me.
On the other hand, Search for Spock suffers from a slow, lagging third act.
They both have their problems.
Furthermore, my all-time favourite so far is STILL The Undiscovered Country. Like #2 and #3, it has its faults. But I can watch #6 endlessly without complaint, while the faults in #2 and #3 jump out at me these days after multiple viewings. -
sat. ur. rate. d. fox sure does know how to kill stuff. remember when the animated series was dragging around in limbo hell? in the early 90s when nobody gave a shit about comics? WTF?
-
... is the way they recycled special effects shots from the first movie. It's really jarring. I assume that when Wrath of Khan first came out it wasn't a problem since so few people actually SAW the first movie. On DVD though, it REALLY hurts suspension-of-disbelief.
-
they assumed correctly that people fell asleep in the first film and decided to recycle the effects. duh!
-
For me the next logical choice for a follow up is to show the end of the 5 year mission and how they deal with it.
-
catrall>alley>curtis
-
Everyone on AICN should know that JJ Abrams created the heaven, the earth, the film business and Star Trek.
-
I really wish I could discuss it with you... it will all make sense at the end of the movie.
I wish Harry or Capone would start a Star Trek Talkback thread. -
Looking good!!!
-
Alley's better than Curtis?! Are you high?
I can bring myself to permit a debate on the comparitive merits of Cattrall/Valeris vs. Curtis/Saavik. I say Saavik beats Valeris, but I can at least allow for a debate.
But to rank Alley's Saavik over Curtis'?! That's madness!! MADNESS I SAY!!! -

Anyway, can't wait to see this Star Trek film. I grew up watching TNG as a kid (airing on Saturday nights if I remember correctly!), and caught a few episodes of TOS whenever they'd show them super late at night. Watched a bit of the other series and some had great eps, some had very poor. Haven't really watched any Trek since that piss poor finale of Enterprise (a show I think gets shat on too much... it had at least 1 good season with the whole Xindi arc) but then we got EVIL ALIEN NAZI'S outta nowhere and the final season was hit/miss (mainly miss). -
I'd like to go there and post about Star Trek.
-
Sounds like kinda the same premise as the Marvel "reboots"
-
Sorry. I seriously hope it is everything those who eagerly awaited it want it to be. I'm in no hurry to see it as it will be out til mid-summer. It looks like a good time.
-
Can't take anymor today, head about to explode, take over please.
-
Armond White wins the sweepstake as first to post a negative review. But as he name checks Mission To Mars as a visionary piece of film I believe we can safely ignore it.
-
because as real geeks recall the first time we see a Romulan is on Kirk's Enterprise, and everyone is shocked to see Spock's dad. Okay we're shocked to see Mark Lenard playing a Romulan, and seeing the fact that Romulans and Vulans are essentially the same race. At least they have a plausible reason for screwing with Star Trek canon unlike The Sarah Connor "oh yeah, bare Terminators can go through time" Chronicles.
-
Again, I'd direct you to the Countdown comic. I'm not sure Spock is necessarily 'on a mission' to stop Nero - that he intentionally followed Nero to the past. They both might wind up in the past for the same reasons. It's best to not assume. Just sayin'.
-
I posted this idea in another TB yesterday, but I'm not giving up now, not ever. Paramount, let Nolan move in and revitalize true SCIENCE FICTION with his own psychologically complex STAR TREK movie. Kirk can talk about giving the Enterprise the Captain it deserves, Spock can hide in the Jeffries Tube like a a ninja from the League of Assassins. And McCoy can chastise Kirk for taking too many risks- but also reiterate that he'll never give up on his friend.

alternate timelines - Comic Spoilers - and Superman comparison
by oisin5199
My main question about the alternative timelines thing is this: with the changes, does that mean the prime Star Trek universe no longer exists? That there's nothing for Spock and Nero to go back to? Or do both timelines continue to exist as parallel universes? This will certainly determine what happens in sequels. Will we now stay in the changed universe exclusively for the foreseeable future? The Countdown comic starts off with Picard, Data, LaForge, and Worf - they witness the beginning of these events. So is there a possibility that future films will include these and other Next Gen characters? Could Sisko come back? Is a black hole like a wormhole? Since the future is changed, does Kirk still go out like a punk? Can Shat do one last appearance? I guess that's the brilliance of this concept. Anything's game.
Also, I don't think this compares to the Superman reboot. Abrams' ideas in that were really kinda dumb. And they were just a simple reworking - an Elseworlds, if you will. Whereas this seems to have a 'have your cake and eat it too' approach that somehow balances the old and the new and creates this Trek hybrid. That's very different, in my mind, from what Abrams attempted with Superman. -
The time for change....is now!

The effects are good but ILM's creator kills smaller creator...
by orionsangels
is getting tired. In Jurassic Park, the T-Rex clamps down on a raptor and it goes limp, then the T-rex throws it against something, that was fine in 93, but now the bigger snow creature does the samething to the smaller snow creature, clamp down and throw and it looks cheap. Why couldn't the bigger creature just eat the smaller creature, why throw it? Is ILM using the same tired software from 15 years ago?
-
STAR TREK is a work by Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman- these are not the most intellectual people in the business. They're good at making entertainment. My biggest gripe with the concept of this new movie was that it decided to go the typical villain route. I'll probably still enjoy the heck out of the spectacle, but STAR TREK could use some intelligence for the next outing, I'm certain.
-
see how upset this has me, i messed up.

I dunno... I'm sure this film is good at this point, but I'd rather watch "Time's Arrow" than be assured this new Kirk has a raging hard-on.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Megan Fox has been called "Earth's Hottest Girl" and the actress' heat will only continue to rise with the release of this summer's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which she promises will have "twice the budget, twice the explosives, and twice the robots and fight sequences. It's a big, huge movie!"
But the actress' movies might be the third most talked about thing when it comes to Megan's life - right behind her dating life and her body.
In an interview in ELLE magazine's June issue, the young actress revealed how her much talked about relationship with Brian Austin Green began.
She first met Brian on the set of "Hope & Faith," saying he seemed "sweet and quiet, harmless. I was like, 'Oh my God, I have to be with you."
At the time Brian was 30, while Megan was just 18 years old.
"I had to convince him that I was slightly more responsible and well-spoken and had other things to bring to the table besides being 18," she told the mag.

Good luck with that.

I'm not a Star Trek fan, but plan on seeing this movie. Between the reviews and the trailers it looks pretty solid. I've seen some episodes of Star Trek here and there over the years, but it never fully enticed me. I saw the first 4 or 5 movies and they were entertaining enough, but this movie looks like it has a different feel, so I look forward to seeing it sometime in the next couple weeks. The Star Trek nod on Fringe last night was pretty funny...

He's like Peter Sellars character from Being There whose retard platitudes are turned into movies and msot people eat it up because they are so dazzled by the savant's idioticy they mistake that bullshit for something that's not. People like Jay Jay and his ass-slaves BOB Orci and Alex Klutzman are some of the wrost thing to ever happen to genre movies, and they are resonsible for the progressive dumbification and destruction of modern american mainstream cinema, one movie at a time. you are missing out on some decent entertainment and storytelling. ST:TNG and DS9 were great shows, Voyager had moments and Enterprise was looking promising, but it never had a chance to really get going. If you would open your mind I am certain that you would be entertained, hell you might even enjoy yourself. To avoid anything other than ST:TOS is kinda stupid.

What's the Ebert difference? Is he smarter? That he would spend most of his review criticizing 40-year-old conceits applicable to every version of Star Trek tells me this particular movie didn't give him anything new to think about.

to bad game will be over at 6 am

And he usually hates everything. He's the Mickey of film critics.
-
His review seems pretty wide of the mark to me. He seems to take umbrage with the new Star Trek primarily because it deviates from the original series, but then levels a series of criticisms at it that all apply to previous iterations of the show. I think he's fallen victim here to a kind of reviewing he normally dislikes - that is, criticising a movie because of what it isn't, instead of what it is.
-
and make it into the masterpiece that it deserves to be.
-
And obiously too old school for this film. He's talking about Arthur C. Clarke and shit. A different kind of sci-fi. And old people can't deal with the kinetic action they we younger people crave. I blame it on ecstasy. :0)

It's a contrived retread of a 60's sho that as deliverd the way the studios wanted, NOT the way the creator intended. ST:TNG is the ONLY show that managed to get the formula he wanted 100% right and that's hy nobody ho hasn't watched from season 3 onwards of ST:TNG will ever have a clue what Trek is, why it is or why this film is simply yet another product with "STAR TREK" stamped across the label yet doing it's own thing that has diddlysquat to do with the utopian challenge, the human progression of mind, state and technology or a basic chain of command. All they're doing is making a severly unchallenging crowd-pleasing flick filled with the basic carnal desies, none of it challenging writing of sci-fi stories based around the idology of Trek and its human progression of utopia or its command structure. All the great reviews in the world mean shit if you haven't clocked what Trek is all about and by all the reviews and the ridiculous contrived premise of this film to simply reboot an idea that doesn't need rebooting; I've realized just how many people simply want to wallow in thier childhood and foregoe the heights that ST:TNG reached by challenging the writers to deliver on Gene Roddenberrys idology and his rules when finally geting it the way he intended. DS9 was simply our level of human being thrown into a Trek tech world, it as not Star Trek and neither is this movie full of charletons and contrived reasons to force a bunch of kids into a comand structure of a starfleet without first having years of experience on other vessels and posts the way the original at least managed to deliver. Popcorn Star Trek with fries, that's hat this is, Simplistic carnal movie action flick to make an easy buck and then loose its audience every couple of years by retreading the same formula of space battles, alien aces that are entirely a threat, jokes and fist fights! Exactly the show the studios forged out of the original series and exactly the show Gene Roddenberry didn't want. Why don't people just make their own shit and stop branding it Star Trek just to make it easier to sell.
-
Dude, the first season of TNG pure sucked! Roddenberrys namby pamby, touchy feely vision of the future is unrealistic, allbeit a very nice idea. It makes horrible storytelling; just doesn't work, like season one of TNG. Thank God we won't be seeing a weepy Troi with a line: "A feeling of great joy, and gratitude" in this movie.

by sal_bando
-Once Again. You know it, I know it, Mikey Bay knows it, Ebert knows it, Abrams knows it. That's the summer franchise movie you are looking for. Accept no others.
-
TNG did NOT get anything right--other than Data (and sometimes Worf). TOG was far superior due to character dynamic and charisma, something Picard and the rest simply lacked.
There. I said it. Search your feelings; you know it to be true. -
The main theme of almost all the films music is a rehash of SW:ROTS.
-
So it doesn't surprise me the space battles and music took a page from George Lucas' best directorial triumph.
-
Sometimes Ebert doesn't make any sense (and I don't blame that on his illness--he's always been that way). He actually praised a number of aspects of Trek and he usually loves all things "space opera." To hear him use that word derogatorily was odd.
-
I was thinking the same thing about the score. Also, there's something really familiar and Trek-like about the leitmotif, almost like they took a phrase from the Wrath of Kahn theme or something.

Got to jump on the bandwagon and say it as well...
by themarinebiologist
We TB-ers do a lot of shitting on the reviews here on AICN, so much so that the reviewers usually just write us all off as stereotypical, mean, spiteful TB-ers.
Let me just show that we do indeed reward good writing with compliments and accolades.
Great review, Capone. Nicely done. -
dare I dream the impossible dream? Will we yet be able to enjoy a revamping of classic pop culture without the baggage of the purists? I say this only joking because I can't decide which is worse: the anticipation of a gay for JJ AICN or the overburdensome nitpick fiesta of the Trek purists. Is it just too much to ask for something new in Star Trek with the orginal archetypes intact? I'll settle for that and yes, if its "popcorn" as it were, then I won't be disappointed.
-
I was never a big DS9 fan, but goddamn, the end of "The Visitor" just destroyed me. Tony Todd was fantastic in that episode, and the scene where Avery Brooks hugs him and says, "my poor little boy..." Well, I just lost it. It's the single most emotionally moving hour of "Trek" ever produced, hands down.

"There are times when the command deck looks like Bring Your Child to School Day, with the kid sitting in daddy’s chair."
That about sums it up.
An "A" from Entertainment Weekly? I don't need another reason to back up my apathy, but, ok, there you go. Must have some really, really homoerotic shit going on that I missed.
-
Featured the one, true best acting performance of last year. Fuck both y'all, Penn and Rourke.
Oh? What "The Visitor" were you guys talking about? -
!!!!
-
"I worshipped the original series, never watched a single episode of any of the follow-up series".Big mistake, pal. TNG and DS9 pwn everything.
-
Keep up with the Avatar stuff, man. i now realise how right you were in all your posts. You saw something that nobody had before. i comend you on your firesight. Avatar coming in December, nothign else matters. Indeed!!! Well, with the exception of Public Enemies, The Hurt Locker, Moon, Franklin and The Road. Damn, there might be some saving of this year afterall.
-
For the creation of Captain Picard alone, TNG deserves lots of respect.
-
Can't believe Old Spock turned out to be Kirk's dad! Weird.
-
But I did see it at Imax... AND I WANT MY FUCKIN' MONEY BACK. Talk about a lack of plot! Everything looked good, but nothing felt right. It is a hollow, empty shell of a film. And a sad day for science-fiction.
-
had Darth Maul and the greatest swordfight of all time. I can't remember anything that stood out in this film... except the Cordrazine reference, but that was barely audible!
-
understands the meaning of the word "dynamics."
-
I'm goin' to bed.

this film is. Just got back from it and it surpassed my already high expectations. Almost everything about the film was adequate at worst, and near perfect at best. Accepting that the previous films didn't have the budgets or effects that this one did and so could never compete visually with this one, this film nevertheless establishes itself, like Casino Royale, as the new standard against which all past and future efforts must be compared. That said, is it better than Wrath of Khan? No. But it comes closer than any other.
-
Great Larry Burns reference! In related news, Orcurtzman wishes they could write a line like "This guy's got more bread than a prison meatloaf!"
-
My life is fallin' apart like a chinese motorcycle!

This place is emptier than a Scottish pay-toilet!

have in common? They fly around Uranus wiping out Klingons. I had to say that. With Star Trek coming up, that joke has been making the rounds again so I had to pass it on. Oh, and I'm seeing it this friday and looking forward to it. I'm not a Star Trek fan by any means, but this looks entertaining.
-
The site was freezing because of problems connecting with the sideshowtoy.com server. An apt metaphor, especially in light of the Star Trek toy post. I'm no McG fan, but it will be good to at least have something else covered in two weeks' time.
-
Whats with all the fucking reviews? I'm sick of NOT READING REVIEWS of a movie that isn't coming out for another two weeks. FUCK YOU REVIEWERS! FUCK YOU IN THE ASS!
-
Fuck me! I gotta get to the movies! I thought it wasn't coming out till May 21
-
Zach DOES do the eybrow thing - at least twice! Now I look like an arse. An arse without a cool new talkback user ID.
-
ST-TMP was the best. This one sounds like a movie for teenagers.
-
Seriously guys. Fucking let go and have fun for once.
