Nolan brings a BATMAN villain onboard his next flick INCEPTION!

Published at:  May 05, 2009 4:59:53 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. No surprises here. Christopher Nolan is gathering a great set of actors for his next film, INCEPTION. Already in the cast are Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard and Cillian Murphy.

Now he's gone and added in Ra's Al Ghul... Ken Watanabe joins the cast, playing a villain in this one, too. Borys Kit at HR has a few details, saying that DiCaprio will play a CEO type and Watanabe is blackmailing him.

Also added is Tom Hardy, who most will probably remember as the evil, young and sick Patrick Stewart Picard clone in the abysmal STAR TREK: NEMESIS. He's done good work, too, never you worry. I liked him in ROCKNROLLA and LAYER CAKE.

I guess all that's missing is Liam Neeson, Eric Roberts, Aaron Eckhart and Tom Wilkinson for a complete reunion. Thoughts?

    by lochkray

I know they haven't worked with Nolan. I know they didn't work on Dark Knight. But I also know they haven't worked on anything lately, so it would be nice to see an extended connection that gives some people in need of a paycheck a bit of work. Clooney is doing okay on his own without my endorsement.

Oh yeah, let's throw in Alice Kridge (or whatever) who played the borg queen in First Contact. That'll make it multi-layered.

    I agree, Knuckleduster

    by ribbons

I wasn't gonna bring it up when someone else mentioned that Nolan has to "complete the trilogy" earlier in the TalkBack; but since you did it for me, I am now! I guess people like threes, but the thing about the idea of the "trilogy" is almost always a fallacy in that 1) the third film almost always sucks, even when it's planned in advance... probably, in fact, because the filmmakers feel obliged to provide the audience with a sort of artificial sense of closure that hinders the story. Oh yeah, and 2) there's almost always a fourth film. I know Warner Bros. is gonna try to give Nolan truckloads of money to make at least one more film in the franchise, but I'd personally be stoked if he turned it down (while simultaneously understanding how it'd be an offer too good to refuse). I just have a feeling Nolan's take on Batman won't ever feel more complete than it did at the end of The Dark Knight.

    by samblackchvrch21

I agree, JGL would be an Ideal replacement for Heath as The Joker for any future Batman films. Let's see how he handles his Cobra Commander. But I am confident he would ape Heath perfectly(after all, thats what the studios want anyway) and Tom Hardy's Best work by far is BRONSON. "Now THIS is a piece of ME"

I hope this guy is smart enough NOT to play The Joker. Apart from the payday, what would be the benefit to him to have to imitate the performance of a guy whose shadow he's already lived in? The only person out there who could take over the role of The Joker, deviate from Ledger's performance, and NOT be killed by audiences and critics is Johnny Depp. Everybody else is doomed, including Gordon-Levitt.

    No Catwoman in Nolan's Bat-verse...

    by cellar door

Seriously. Is there a more cartoonishly pointless villian in Batverse besides her? Even still, I really like the Catwoman character and thought Pfiefer was superb in a rather corny movie (we don't discuss Halle's "movie" here) but my point is that the character has no place in the Nolan Batverse. Don't get me wrong, seeing any number of hotties in the trademarked black vinyl (another reason it wont happen, 'trademark') is never bad thing but it just has no place in Nolan's Gotham. I always see these Nolan or Batman related TB's and always people clamor for Catwoman in the 3rd entry. Why? Cause chicks in black vinyl are hot? Ok, granted, but that's speaks more of a "you should get laid" then "it's perfect for the next Nolan Bat's flick!!!" dontcha think?Catwoman would be in McG's Batman and then we could all drool over Moon Bloodgood's tits or whatever but when story edged with realism (gritty or not) matters most, you stay pretty clear from the more intrinsically flamboyant characters that would be difficult to bring to your screen in a manner not self-mocking. If Nolan puts anything close to the historical Catwoman in the next one, it would be an expert "cat" burglar not unlike Ocean's 12 "The Night Fox" but there's no way in hell a thief would wear shiny black leather or vinyl much less draw any attention to herself, etc...the point is the essence of Catwoman is Catwoman. The essence of the Joker is chaos or psychosis. The essence of Two-face is betrayal and twisted justice in the form of 'chance'. The Penguin and the Riddler are still somewhere in between cartoon and realistic and I think lend themselves for the next villain...but for Nolan to give us a new villain with all the visual trappings but without the co-requisite madness, it would be something I think they wouldn't even consider.Of course, if anyone could do it, it'd be the Nolan boys who do but I think it's a big risk and the general risks of doing the third part of a trilogy (at this point) is far more critical than putting in a villain that actually impedes the process of creating a worthy third picture.Me toosense.

Cellar Door- I think they could fit in Catwoman

    by yackbacker

But it would have to be in furtherance of the plot. TDK shows that Nolan wants real criminal enterprises to be the focus of the series. BEGINS was a bit more fantastic in its treatment of a terrorist attack, but TDK was straight crime drama. Following that trend, I think if Catwoman was someone involved in or integrally connected to a realistic crime scheme, she would fit into the movie just fine. So, her outfit has no tail and she doesn't wear a bra and leather pants, that's fine. Catwoman is a cat-burglar. She woulc be decked out in an all-black outfit and maybe a mask for flair. It could work.

    Catwoman...

    by 11dayempire

...is a fairly logical choice for a Bat-villain in Nolan's film universe. We've already seen a "real-world" take on her (the dominatrix-prostitute-turned-burglar from Year One), and with Rachel blown up, the films need a female lead who can promote the movie in Cosmo and the other womens' mags.

Bane and Penguin for Batman 3....

    by davidia

Phillip Hoffman as the penguin. Have him play the penguin almost like he did MI:3, only with a mafiaso-edge. It'd be perfect. Cast Vinnie Jones as Bane and have him be a psychotic, brilliant murderer with extreme physicality. Who is hustled in by the penguin to rid Gotham of Batman. Include some great gritty fight scenes with Bane and Bats. BB and TDK had their themes, so maybe use a theme of duality, mainly Batman finally having to resort to lower measures to deal with the harsh enemies of Penguin/Bane, plus the cops being after him.... Make him fight with himself ala Spiderman 3/Supes 3....only do it right this time. Maybe allude to Joker pulling plot-strings from inside Arkham, maybe a throw in a twist ending of everything being run by the Joker from inside...and end it on that. Case closed, Nolans Batverse is ended on the promise of "We're destined to do this forever"...just inside our own heads, so no needless aping of Ledgers happens.

That said, I agree with you about JGL as The Joker. I don't expect Nolan to every re-cast Joker, and I definitely wouldn't WANT him to do it for the next one, especially. If he did, JGL wouldn't be a horrible choice I suppose, but I'm not convinced he would be the best choice, either. As others have pointed out, it doesn't matter in the slightest that he resembles Heath, because even Heath didn't resemble Heath in TDK.

    Cottilard for Catwoman - ?!

    by angel blake

Coincidentally, there's already mock-up posters on internet of Marion Cottilard as Catwoman for new Batman 3 movie. Perhaps Nolan will see these and consider this option... I'd prefer Ellen Page personally, reckon she's more psychotic. Plus Levitt is an excellent actor (see Mysterious Skin & Brick if any doubts)--if i had to have a Joker to replace Ledger it would be him. Though, i think Catwoman as well as possibly Harlequin are my favoured villians for a sequel.

    More on Catwoman...

    by cellar door

You guys bring up some good points but how cinematically boring is a female cat burglar in the Nolan Batverse when you think about it? How is it worthy of Batman's (or Nolan's) attention cinematically? It's like putting in a love interest in the next Bats flick, it's so traditional knee-jerk a plot device that it's apparent mandatory necessity must be questioned and thank the cinema godz that Nolan appears prepared to do just that.Catwoman would have to be 'larger than life' (think escalation) and for a female cat burglar to be larger than life, where else is there to go but some variation of the classic Catwoman and I am 100% certain that that particular Catwoman has no place in this franchise. Now, as for Catherine Zeta Jones, she would have been infinitely better than Halle Berry in CW even though nothing would have saved that movie. And yes, her role in 'Entrapment' is a good place to start for Catwoman but again, it's a regular old hi-stakes cat buglar who happens to be a beautiful woman. All things very interesting in Ocean's 1X movies or real life but not necessarily something to "escalate" the next Nolan Batman movie.I think Nolan may surprise us and not put any of the classic and expected villains next. No Catwoman, no Riddler, no Bane, no Penguin either....personally, I can't wait for the surprise! (outside of being surprised that Nolan isn't going to do it and the studio is getting Rattner or McG instead).

"..it's so traditional knee-jerk a plot device that it's [sic] apparent mandatory necessity must be questioned..." - I've been thinking this all along in regards to Catwoman (and even Riddler/Penguin). The fact that EVERYONE considers Catwoman and/or Riddler "mandatory necessities" should be enough to really make you take a hard look at WHY people have those ideas and if there's anything wrong with them. Perhaps we're still stuck in a 90's Bat-franchise mindset?

    Recasting The Joker

    by barron34

I think that they should have just a 5 minute cameo of the Joker in Arkham, as some have suggested. The character is just too big in the Batman mythos to simply retire. And a cameo would in some ways honor Heath's work, since his Joker is too great a creation to discard. Many have suggested Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is a good actor (see "Brick"). I think that Joquin Phoenix would be a good choice. He has that sort of otherworldy quality, that "difference" that made Heath's Joker so eerie and fascinating. Plus he is a good actor, and could probably do a tribute to Heath's work without doing an outright imitation. Anyway, I think Phoenix would be a good Joker, and Nolan should consider creating a cameo role for the Joker character in the next Batman flick.

I was, of course, being facetious about Cosmo and the womens' mags. But BB and TDK are *very* blokey films, and the studio will demand a female lead in there to draw the female audience in. Nolan has a lot of clout at WB, but even he will see that you can't have a tentpole film with no women in the cast. Without Rachel in the mix, they need to find another character, and the only one that's really credible in the Nolanverse is Catwoman. I think there'd be some interesting character mileage in a predatory Catwoman pursuing Batman as a romantic interest, given that Bruce is terribly damaged in the aftermath of Rachel's death. Hell, there's even the fact that after the events of TDK, Batman is as much a criminal as Catwoman...

    Devil's Advocate:

    by dingbatty

If they were to get a new actor to play The Joker, they might make him a legacy character -- a copycat, to mirror the copycat Batmen in TDK. Either Bruce is surprised to find that there is a Joker on the streets, despite his certainty of his incarceration, or, someone aided Heath/Joker in escaping (Harley?), yet he returns as a different person (this could be a mystery for Detective Bats to solve as a side plot).

I dunno, I think the Joker's the one character they *can* get away with recasting easily, 'cause of the makeup (hell, there's even an easy way to explain away any differences in characterisation by using Grant Morrison's notion of him as a mutable superpersonality). I think enough time will have passed between TDK and Batman 3 that audiences will be more willing to accept a recast Joker. Hell, it might even put a few bums on seats, with people wondering how the new guy will fare. Up til recently I'd have said that Johnny Depp is the only guy with the accumulated goodwill to step into Heath Ledger's shoes, but JGL really does look like Ledger's junior clone. And he's got the Nolan vote of confidence already!

Two-Face is not dead you fucks

    by dirtsandwich

Aaron said he signed on for 2 movies. Nolan is the one that is not obligated to come back. The Riddler and Two-Face in the 3rd. Two-Face's face better be pretty infected with puss and maggots. You can't just let a burn like that go without gangrene setting in. But the MPAA will probably say "If you are going to have running puss and maggots on a dude's face then it'll have to be "R" rated."

JGL will probably do a cameo as the The Joker. Like a side shot of him in a jail cell. Him mumbling about something related to Batman's new dilemma. Then if there is a 4th film, JGL might play a prominent more role.

thats what I have thought as well, have the Joker play a Hannibal Lecter type of role . . . but the whole thing is an elaborate escape attempt. I have no problem seeing a minor character 'Catwoman', a 'Riddler'(rehashing the general gist of Jim Carrey's Riddler without doing a 'Jim Carrey', more of a unabomberish type would be acceptable), and a 'Penguin'. If it can be done in a way that is real (more real than TDK even, I havent read Aronofski's, but it sounds dope) I could see all of them coexisting in one movie, but I personally want four. One for Joker to get out, one for Batman to end. If the first is Begins, the last better be 'ends'. CHUD's idea of the cult of the bat (? if that is what it is called) is a good one. But the idea of making up a new villain is to me a non-starter. Could be wrong, personal opinion.

    by asimovlives

This guy is going places. Darn great young actor. If ever the Joker returns to Nolan's Batman movies, then he's the one for the role, and nobody else. Accept no substitutes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the real deal.

Catwoman in a Nolan's Batman movie

    by asimovlives

I think that's very fearseble. And in my opinion, there is already a strong canddidate for that role, a brillant young actress who's also drop dead gorgeaus: emelie Blunt. In fact, Blunt was the forst choice for Rachael Dawes back in the dsay of casting for Batman Begins, problem was, back then nobody in Hollywood knew who she was, and they went for the safe choices, Natalie Portman and Kate Holmes. Portamn said no becasue she rather prefer be the star of her own movie, so she chosed to do V For Vendetta instead. adn thus, Katie Holmes got the role. This hic up on Blunt's career migth actually had been a blessing in disguise, so that now she can have (hoplefully) a kick ass role of Catwoman whwere she can display better her great acting range and, well of course, her great beauty.

Have some BALLS and coninue the escalation with SUPERMAN.

    by jdanielp

Some people just can't "see" it,...having Superman in this universe that Nolan has realized. But understand, the Gotham City that Nolan built does NOT change. The only difference is that Superman is a unique tourist, unlike any they have ever encountered. THE NEXT BATMAN FLICK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE EVEN BETTER!!!

    by jdanielp

It boggles my mind...with all the excitement I feel in imagining Nolan's world with Superman in it. I can "see it" without closing my eye's, in using my mind's eye. (Can't you?) I've never been so sure of anything in my life!!!

I have tried to see it but Superman isn't easy in Nolans world. There would be no organised crime. This bloke can show up anytime out of nowhere and fuck you up if you step out of line. All the brightest criminals would go straight. Then there's who? More freaks? Creatures from space? Sorry mate, I can't.

You are right about TDK though

    by youngdog

but you would either have to a)kill Bruce Wayne off or b)go post apocalyptic.Nolans recreating a hero. If he goes for the trilogy he ain't going to end it with him dying or riding off on a horse. So far it has been creation and existence. If the next one is death then it will be Batman not Bruce Wayne.Unless of course you are suggesting there is a way to kill BALE?

    Catwoman and great acting...

    by cellar door

I don't think the casting is the issue, I think whomever said "Is a female cat burglar dramatic enough for this world?" (paraphrase) had it right. Is it dramatic in the movie's context and theme? That is EXACTLY the point. All notions of getting her to the screen are very possible but she'd have to be a smaller side character. With Nolan's theme of 'escalation', why would we go from a "Man who just wants to watch the world burn", who is an unstoppable force in Batman's world unless Bats violates his core principle (not to kill). So how can you squeeze in a female cat burglar in that context? A love interest? Please. That's so obvious and (to me) such a thematic crutch, that I don't think the Nolan's would even consider it (plus it's a re-tread of Batman Returns, etc).So even if they got the greatest female lead ever and brought the character over into Nolan's Batverse, what more could she be beyond a love interest or a skilled high-stakes thief? And why would even an excellent thief interest Batman when his last couple nemeses threatened to turn Gotham into Perdition? A professional cat burglar would be escalation from that? What's she stealing? The cure for cancer? And why? I can see some possibilities running around here and there that I think might fit thematically but it's such a stretch and at the end of the day, why bother? I think Catwoman risks making Batman far too pedestrian at this point. It can be done and the Nolan's seem talented and dedicated enough to pulling it off but it seems like swimming upstream to me. When you have other villains that might lend themselves more to Nolan's underlying theme.I haven't read Year One but am interested in how they portray her (according to you guys) and don't get me wrong, I really do like the character a lot. I dearly love female badasses that do so without being remotely masculine (Ripley, Trinity, Selene, etc) and we need more of them (all we seem to get are tough guy 'she-men' as if the only way to inherent badass-ness was through masculinity, bollocks!)).But I think it's out stacking the deck a bit to pursue Catwoman for Nolan's Batverse. It makes an already practically impossible job (making a 3rd entry worthy of the previous 2 and, if at all possible, better) much more difficult. But if anyone could pull it off, it's the Nolan's.

Joker doesn't need to be in the film too long

    by joker gordon levitt

It's not like he's got to be the headliner of the next film or anything, but the character should pop up somewhere. In a padded cell in Arkham perhaps? I for one would love to see a "Silence of the Lambs" moment between vigilante and psychopath. The interrogation room scene was arguably the best thing about TDK.
That video posted JuntMonkey was an awesome glimpse at what could be a great tribute to Ledger's performance. Gordon-Levitt is a great actor, and would do the character justice. His resemblance to Ledger is a happy coincidence, but is not the driving force behind my choice. If Johnny Depp got the part, it wouldn't be a cameo. And the movie runs the risk of turning into 'Public Enemies 2".
Riddler, Penguin, and Catwoman are the ost logical choices for chief villain. Of the 3, Riddler is the most cunning, leaving clues daring his enemies to catch him. Penguin is a nice representation of the mob element in Gotham. And yes, there must be a female element or women won't be interested. And, lets face it, guys will pay money to see Catwoman on screen. It's a woman, dressed is a skintight cat-suit. Lowest Common Denominator says it will work.
The '2nd Tier' villains (Mr. Zsasz, Cornowed-Croc-Guy) should absolutely make cameos. Nolan's great about slipping these characters into scenes where the focus isn't directly on them. I think its a great easter egg for fans of the books.
Talia would be an interesting addition, but only to link the 3rd film to Batman Begins. Bane would work if he was tied into her story somehow.
Someone suggested Superman, and I'm all for that. God knows someone needs to do the character correctly. My only concern is that Batman would be overshadowed. Better to save him for Batman 4, where they can begin a new trilogy together.

    Hey Cellar Door,

    by joker gordon levitt

what if instead of a re-tread of Batman Returns, Catwoman is trying to help Batman solve a crime. Their interests are similar, but their methods differ. He'd want to turn her in for being a thief, but she could also save his life, thus creating an internal struggle for the hero?

Superman could work in The "more realistic" Nolan style Bat-verse.
Superman's presence could cause the more run-of-the-mill gangsters of Gotham to try and become super-villains. Producing a slew of half-assed (but troublesome for Batman) villains that could be taken from past comics.
Because it's SM's fault that Gotham just escalated to metropolis-level super-crimes it starts the trouble in the relationship between Bruce and Clark.Wow that is truly the Geekiest post I've ever written, I feel dirty yet free, free I say!

Superman in a Nolan's Batman would be retarded

    by asimovlives

In where in any of nolan's batman movies does it even sugest that such a thing as Superman would fit in in that universe? People who want superman in Nolan's batman movies, i just weant to ask you: did you even watched the fucking movies? Where the fuck it would fit in? That's just you having geekasms, that's all. And ylur geekasms would turn Nolan's batman movies into pure exercises in completle retardness. Might as well hire Brett Ratner to do that to complete the fuck up. Do you geek boys even think beyond your geekams fantasies and understantd the concept of artistic continuity and integrity?

    Cellar Door raises interesting points...

    by angel blake

...about the inclusion of Catwoman and the theme of escalation, although i think Nolan's smart enough to realise that escalation is not in the same manner as Hollywood escalation ie - sequels have bigger set pieces, villains have meaner gimmicks etc. In deed, Nolan's Gotham is supplanted in reality and hence escalation can suggest how more young vulnerable people are being attracted to crime. Catwoman can represent a young person, perhaps a by-product of the failing Gotham care system - itself unable to address the crumbling foundation of Gotham's families. Escalation, in a criminological sense, just means that crime is growing and becoming harder to contain. Where crime is concerned, the Joker represented the chaos and Two-Face was his moral pawn. I like the character of Catwoman as she represents a human dimension to crime, not yet explored.

    Nolan's Catwoman

    by asimovlives

In a Nolan's Batman nmovie, Catwoman could be a mirrror image of whjat would be Batman without the moral compass the his coset associates bring, like Alfred the buttler or once Rachael Dawes, or Jim Gordon and Lucious Fox. Catwoman could be what a traumatized Bruce Wayne had been if he had nobody else to him to temper his lust for reenge and quail his demons and tuen them into a force to right agaisnt crime and corruiption and enforce justice and rightousness. Catwoman could be his flip coin, and how corrupted and self-serving he would had bveen without a stong moral center, a total victim of tragedy turned into self-centered self-justified dammage goods.

    Escalation of Batman series

    by continentalop

The other direction Nolan can go in is that Batman himself faces the danger of "over-escalating" the situation. After dealing with the anarchy of the Joker, the feeling that he failed Dent, and now is being hunted by the police, a frustrated Batman might be pushing the limits of what he considers moral/responsible behavior. If Batman starts thinking more and more "the end justify's the means and "harsh times requires harsh tactics", that could be an interesting angle for dealing with the idea of how far you can allow yourself to go. Especially when one of the people you are facing isn't that evil, like Catwoman.

    On escalation...

    by 11dayempire

The thing is escalation was the theme of the *second* Batman film; there's nothing to suggest that it will also be the central theme of the third one. Its foreshadowing at the end of Batman Begins suggests that the theme of the third film was similarly foreshadowed in the closing moments of TDK. Which would mean that the third film's going to be about vigilantism, about a character operating outside the law. If Catwoman was recast as a Robin Hood-type figure, an antihero stealing from the corrupt rich, that'd place Batman in an interesting moral quandary; she's punishing the villains as he is, but deriving personal gratification from it. Well, Batman's getting personal gratification from his mission, too. Add to that the possibility of Selina pursuing Bruce, who's profoundly damaged in the wake of Rachel's death, and the blurring of the lines between his Batman/Bruce personas, and you have an interesting set of themes to play with using Catwoman.
