LIFE Is Dead!! CHUCK Chucked From Mondays??

Published at:  May 05, 2009 1:02:11 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman told reporters at NBC’s Monday “infront” presentation that:

* “Life” is indeed cancelled.

* If “Chuck” does get renewed it probably won’t stay on Monday, as “a new show” is expected to join “Heroes” and “The Jay Leno Show” that night.

* Chris Meloni and Mariska Hargitay may or may not be on “SVU” next season.

I really liked the first season.

    by zod_

But the 2nd season lost me, I started to find it boring, and it just seemed to morph into another standard cop show. They really toned down cruz' quirks and stuff, which seemed to water down the show.

    by chromedome

The audience is generally home to watch that night--that is where Fox should have put T:SCC and Dollhouse.Getting Chuck OUT of Mondays (and away from the suckage that is Heroes) is a doubly good move--no competing with Monday Night Football in the fall.

    by paul t. ryan

Sure this might rate domestically, but chat shows already have a short self life and that will make overseas airings/sales more problematic than scripted or even reality shows. Shame about Life, but I hear it ended with some closure at least.

    Law & Order: SVU

    by mc satan

I'm willing to move on from Meloni and Hargitay. The main show survived major cast changes, some were good, some not so much. SVU has gotten so stale that I watch in spite of the leads, not because of (well when I watch). Didn't they say early in the show's run that officers tend to rotate out of SVU quicker because of the hard toll it takes on them. Yet the show features one of the most stable casts on tv since season 3. Doesn't fit.

Not Great mind you but it was good shame. i feel NBC needs to look at were they are taking their network. Life had a good ending at least something that NBC does not always give their shows look at how quantum Leap got the shaft of a ending. well hope some of those cast members find new shows like 24 would love to see Cruz and Reese on 24

    by badmrwonka

I know, you think Heroes is horrible...but Chuck was always overvalued...at least Heroes had a built-in fan base (that it's maybe whittling away at), but Chuck ALWAYS had a huge potential that it never met.
not trying to be a huge douche...I saw the show and thought it could be good. but it was ALWAYS a failed experiment.
a good idea does NOT equal a good show. if so, Studio 60 would still be on the air...

    by lou c.

The second season abandoned a lot of things from the first season, which I loved every minute of, but it was still one of the best shows on TV. Still, I think it's funny when people go apeshit that a network is stupid for canceling a show. Look, no one fucking watched it. It was getting around 4 million viewers a week, and it didn't have any buzz. What are they gonna do? I wish it would have premiered someplace like USA or FX, where it wouldn't have had to get big ratings to succeed, and could have built an audience. I just feel fortunate, however, that I was even able to SEE a second season ...

I loved Life. It was on the bubble last season so I was glad that it got picked up. And I'm even more surprised seeing that it kept picking up viewership and they also moved it to Wednesday from Friday. The moved said to everyone that it had promise. Moving it toward Lost, not so good. Every show I get into always gets canceled. I'm done with NBC though. That was the first show they ever had that I enjoyed.

    It was inevitable...

    by jack_effing_bauer

Chuck is just good enough to go either way. I'd like to see it come back just because it's light hearted and fun. The real catastrophe is Life, but season 2 took a dive bomb when Reese got pregnant (IRL) and the interaction was thus removed. And the addition of Gabriel Reese, while pleasant, just didn't have the kick that Reese had.

The networks really need to retool their rating programs since most people I know don't bother watching shows at their aired hours. It's all TIVO'd and watched at later days. It doesn't mean we don't like the show, it just means we all lead busy lives and can't watch when you tell us to watch.

    by krylyyk

When airing new episodes, it is consistantly in NBC's top 15 shows. It beats Chuck every few weeks, and ALWAYS beats Friday Night Lights (which was renewed for two more seasons). Why keep Life? Better question is, why are they keeping something thats worse?

Moving Chuck would be the best thing for it

    by rob0729

assuming it survives. Monday at 8PM was a killer spot for them. It is one of the most competitive hours on TV. Other than Thursday at 9PM, I don't think there is a tougher hour. They had to face similiar demo shows like Big Bang Theory/HIMYM duo, TSCC, and House. They also face Dancing with the Stars which is currently battling American Idol for the top rated show on TV (isn't that a sad state of how much TV has fallen?).
No matter where they move Chuck to, it should perform better unless they move it to Saturday night. Personally, I think Tuesday at 8PM at least until American Idol comes back on, is a good spot since that hour is own by NCIS and that skews old.

But, yes, again, Leno has a lot to do with it. But this is NBC that should be blamed. Don't blame Leno for taking a job from them! Why would he turn it down or why would he not ask for his own show if yhe can get it. But, it means NBC will now have FIVE fewer drama series, forcing many more cancellations. That's not insignificant. 10pm has always been the home to dramas. That's all over now at NBC. Personally, I think NBC's making a mistake with that show. I think my local Boston NBC affiliate will be somewhat vindicated when Leno's show wreaks havoc at NBC.

And that's 5 fewer hours of NBC shows from which to draw guests to plug said shows. With Leno joining Conan and Fallon, assuming 2 non-musical guests per show, that's 30 guests in total needed per week for NBC's nightly talk shows.

    by big jim

"if it bombs, he makes with the money AND goes to fight Conan at FOX (with Fox giving him more money!) "If Leno were to go to Fox straight from The Tonight Show that's one thing. However, for him to try and get his own talk show after his Not-The-Tonight-Show show fails will be much more difficult. He succeeded with The Tonight Show but how much of that success comes from the host and how much from the show itself? How many watch The Tonight Show because of Jay Leno as opposed to those who watch it because it is The Tonight Show?Maybe that's been NBC's plan all along. They don't want to lose Leno to another network so they give him this 10pm show expecting it to fail so they can be rid of him and his contract and, at the same time, damaging Leno's appeal to another network. Kind of like not divorcing one's wife when the romance dies for fear she'd find herself a better husband, Instead cheat on her for years until she becomes a bitter alcoholic hag that no man would want, then cut her loose.

For the same reason I like Castle on ABC, it had a serious side, a funny side, an ongoing sub-plot, and interesting personal dynamics between the main characters.

Plus I enjoy a show that can keep me interested and I'm not always able to figure out who did it in the first 1/3 of the show.

We really don't need 12 spin off's of Law and Order or CSI.

If the show bombs I don't think he'll be terribly heart broken. He won't fade in obscurity. Right now even while doing the Tonight Show he does standup on the weekends at various clubs on the west coast. He loves to do comedy, even if you hate him, and you have to respect that. I give Seinfeld the same props. The man could be very comfortably retired, but nope, he loves to be behind the mic.

...because it's on too late, but because I just don't care for that type of programming. Same goes for Dave, too, although if I had to watch one or the other, it would be Dave. Having Leno on at 9:00 P.M. CST, will give me one less hour of HDTV programming to worry about how I will manage to view/record. Five nights a week. Although, to be honest... "The Eleventh Hour" was the only network show that I had to worry about. Okay, ok, "The Unusuals" have taken a spot now as well, but... Leno doesn't stand a chance.

Monk ends its' run this summer - although many will argue it ended a few years ago - and with no more of "The 4400" or "The Dead Zone" you could definately use someone as quirky and cool as Charlie Crews.

richiro33: Did the ending of Life...

    by mindtrip

...leave you wondering if Crews would come out of the experience (ending) different? It left me wondering if he would be the same guy or if his solution to the problem would change him. And I reeeeaaalllllly wanted to see a third season address it if it did...

    Sad about Life

    by pompoulus

But it wasn't THAT good, and it ended about as well as it possibly could in what basically was an honest to goodness old fashioned story arc! It's good I'm sure that it didn't drag on and lose every ounce of quality it had over a few more plodding years.

Life would be perfect for USA network

Good call, guys. But NBC owns USA and if they wanted to move it to there they could have already.

For those who hate on Chuck...

    by djjester

Chuck may not be some amazing piece of television, but its consistent, its funny, and there's a lot of great moments. Chuck has yet to give us an episode that I could call "bad".

If it wasn't up against another great geek related show like Big Bang Theory and some of the other shows on Monday night I'd say it could do very well.

Rob Weiss, any ethnicity, 30s. Weiss is the argumentative and tough Chief of Staff to President Allison Taylor. He speaks his mind and does not worry about being polite. Weiss is quick to strike back against the President's enemies. He is a bit high-strung at times, but he does a great job protecting the interests of the administration. SERIES REGULAR.
Davis Cole, any ethnicity, Mid 20s - 30s. Davis is a former military guy who is now in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit's Field Operations. He has recently returned from time in the Marines in the Middle East, and he is now readjusting to civilian life. Davis aspires to eventually take a similar career path as Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). He looks up to Bauer and admires him. Davis is also romantically seeing his colleague Dayna Pakkala. SERIES REGULAR
Brian Hastings, any ethnicity, 30s - 40s. Brian is a clean-cut and businesslike man who is in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit's New York City office. He has a very keen and focused sense of intelligence about him. He choses his words very carefully when he speaks and never overeacts to anything. He seems like someone who would be comfortable trading stocks or running a company, but instead he has chosen to help contribute to running the agency. SERIES REGULAR

At least Life had some semblance of closure. I don't see a future for well-made quirky cop dramas at NBC.

I'll Miss Life, Hope Chuck Survives

    by southron

I'll miss Life for sure. Good writing, hot women (Sarah Shahi, Gabrielle Union), fun story idea.

I hope Chuck survives for much the same reasons.

But in the end I like the Leno show for the simple reason that it takes 5 hours of primetime television off my DVR record list. I recently made a list of what shows I actually record to the DVR faithfully and it came down to only 11 hours of primetime programming. And I still fill the drive up and find myself hunting for content to delete unwatched.
