‘Hello, Walter!! It’s Time To Go!!’ Fox Orders 22 More Episodes Of J.J. Abrams Drama FRINGE!!

Published at:  May 04, 2009 6:21:33 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

To absolutely no one’s surprise, Fox on Monday formally announced a 22-episode second season for “Fringe,” the top-rated freshman series on television.

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is on some kind of roll! Its fantastic new “Star Trek” movie, which should make a mint, is still 100% positive on Rotten Tomatoes and “Lost” was the top-rated Wednesday series last week (behind only megamonster “American Idol”).

Fox says of Tuesday’s penultimate episode, titled “The Road Not Taken”:

First her bad dreams became reality, and now Olivia is “dreaming” while awake, seeing elaborate bleak visions of things not really there. While investigating the disturbing case of a woman who apparently spontaneously combusted, Olivia throws caution to the wind and mines her unexplained visions for clues. Meanwhile, Walter comes clean about his prior knowledge of the Z.F.T. manifesto, and Peter’s secret project is revealed and yields surprising help in unraveling the mystery.

Fox says of next week’s season finale, “There’s More Than One of Everything,” which introduces Leonard Nimoy as William Bell:

The sudden and unexpected attack on someone with close ties to Fringe Division, the return of bioterrorist David Robert Jones (guest star Jared Harris) and the inexplicable disappearance of Walter set the stage for a non-stop, nail-biting season finale of FRINGE. Questions will be answered, observations made, loyalties tested and truths and identities revealed.

If you care to follow Hercules on Twitter, head here.

9 p.m. Tuesday. Fox.

    It's a quality show.

    by nopix

I've had issues with this season, but the good far outweighs the bad. Walter Bishop is a great and increasingly mysterious character. Anna Torv is hot. The production values are top notch. The opening credits are very cool. And the X-Files vibe always wins me over.

As long as they keep the nonsensical German phrases.

    by derlanghaarige

Y'know, like the "Wissenschaft Prison" or lines like "Das Sicherheitsgurtzeichen wird belichtet". Okay, they fix all the mistakes in the German dubbing, but it's damn funny anyway.
Oh, and that the show stays entertaining. That would be nice too.

This season has been full of promise and the good has definitely outweighed the bad. I can only hope that this has a similar curve of improvement to the X-Files, where Seasons 3-5 was a golden period for that series.

    Two things...

    by pinkfloyd2000

Fringe is a pretty good show. Is it The X-Files? Well, no. But it's pretty darn good. Secondly, have you watched any Prison Break this season? And you think that show STILL has any life AT ALL left in it? The only reason I'm still watching it is that I am fully vested, having seen every episode so far, even though I was ready for it to be over after Season 2. The whole Momma Schofield drama is right out of the cheesiest of soap opera storylines, and did you happen to see the episode a little while back where they had a scheduled hit on the General? Umm...why not just PUT A BULLET IN HIS HEAD WHILE HE'S SITTING NEXT TO YOU IN THE CAR SO YOU CAN BE SURE HE'S DEAD. Why go through all the trouble to rig a timed explosive? It's just lazy, sloppy writing, and that show is completely finished and crawling its way toward the finish line with two broken legs, where someone will thankfully put it out of its misery.

    Fringe needs work.....

    by champoozie_jones

I think the main problem with Fringe (and the reason that keeps me from viewing the show as great as opposed to ok) is that the lead is really freaking boring. Anna Torv has no what-so-ever charisma, at least not the kind of charisma required of a lead in a show like this. Anytime she is on screen the show comes to a mind-numbing halt. The whole plot arc with Dunham’s sister is just excruciatingly bad and any time the show cuts to that, it makes me feel like watching commercials on other networks. Walter, Peter, Astrid and Gene the cow are the saving graces of the show. Yes, I like Gene the cow better than I like Dunham. The show’s got a really interesting mythology so I’m hoping that maybe next season they can bring in someone to partner up with Torv’s character and hopefully counter her complete lack of charisma.

Just because Fringe is a supernatural type fbi show, doesnt mean its just a rip off of the x-files.

Think about it, how many doctor/cop/csi type shows are out there, yet when a new one starts we dont instantly say its a copy of all other shows like it. Just because there is now another one with sci fi/supernatural elements doesnt mean it isnt new or original. Its really quite different from the x-files and in many ways better.

    by wycklen

i defy anyone to tell me where you can find a better father/son relationship on television right now. Its simply not possible. The dynamics between those two are, at times, hilarious, heartfelt, back and forth banter that is good natured or tension filled... i could go on. bottom line is that Walter is one of the most brilliant characters i've seen in recent memory and he's slowly evolving into a heartbreaking and tormented soul, but can just barely hide his sadness enough to remain that quirky mad scientist. And I think Peter is starting to see that. Also, Walter constantly forgetting Astrids name is hilarious. Oh, and he has a cow. Everyone knows a true scientist needs to have a cow to call upon at the drop of a hat.

I don't recall if it was in an interview with the creators or what, but it was supposed to be a two seasons long show. The ratings were good enough during the second season that FOX exercised the option/threw a lot of money at the creators for a third season. Then the writers' strike...

When you have to go to such extremes to keep all the characters together in S3... it felt soooo sooo strained. I didn't even bother with S4 though my wife tells me it got alot better. Same thing with 24... I don't think the writers ever seriously thought it would make it past season 2.

    I don't like Olivia because...

    by allykatd

Well I'm not sure why I don't like Olivia, I haven't figured it out. Is it Anna Torv's inability to act? But some people are okay with it. Is it her lack of onscreen charisma, which seems okay for some other people, but I find her charisma-less. Is it the writing? The writing for her seems solid. They've gone out of their way to make her a sympathetic character with internal and external struggles. They've hit all the beats, but I'm just not feeling them from her. Since I'm female, I don't care if she's hot or not, I just want a strong female lead I can identify with and she's just not it. Come to think of it, I'm having issues with Eliza Dushku on Dollhouse, too. I like Agent Walker on 24. I like Sarah on Chuck. I like Fiona on Burn Notice. So why do I feel so blah on Oliva? It's actually bugging me because when I first herad about this show I was excited to here about another strong female lead.

    tbransonlives

    by hobocode

Absolutely not. Fringe is far and away mostly self-contained episode to episode plots. The overall plot can be summed up in a few sentences.
There is a series of unexplained phenomena referred to by the FBI as The Pattern, and these happenings seem to be followed by a bald albino called The Observer (of which there may be more than one).
The FBI has set up a division to investigate The Pattern led by Olivia Dunham (an FBI agent who's lover John Scott was killed and was either investigating or helping agents of The Pattern. Olivia now seems to share Scott's memories after a weird procedure performed by Walter Bishop.
Walter and his son Peter are also on the task force led by Olivia. Walter was released from a mental hospital to help investigate The Pattern but suffers gaps in memory. The Pattern seems to be related to experiments he and his lab mate William Bell conducted in the past.
William bell is the founder of Massive Dynamic, a shadowy tech corporation that is somehow related to the Pattern but whose also sits on the committee overseeing the FBI's Pattern task force. MD is in possession of John Scott's corpse which they are able to mine for information post-mortem.
William Bell also may be funding a bioterrorist group known as ZFT (Destruction by Advancement of Technology - in English). ZFT's manifesto states that scientific and technological progress will lead to the Apocalypse. It also describes the existence of a parallel world inhabited by beings not unlike us existing in an history slightly ahead of our own. The document further states that the way to travel between the universes has been discovered and that the final outcome of these travels will be the survival of only one of the two worlds: us or them.
    Other pertinent information:
Peter, like his father, is a genius but has been nomadic switching from one odd job to another, and he seems to be well connected to many legal and illegal sources.
The/A Observer saved Walter's and Peter's lives from a frozen lake when Peter was younger.
Olivia, because of experiments conducted on her as a child by Walter involving a chemical called Cortexiphan, seems to have special abilities.
You are now up to speed on Fringe.

    allykat, It's Torv, not you

    by stabby

And you are not alone. You're right about the character being well developed so it has to be Torv. She has almost zero charisma. This is especially noticeable when she is in scenes with John Noble whose charisma is off the roof. It's a shame because I really try to like her, but I can''t. When you think of a similar straight by the books female character like Dana Scully and how Gillian Anderson was able to bring so much out of that character you realize how Torv's Olivia pales in comparison.

I think its just fan speculation at this point. But, their was an episode where Walter was talking about cloning, but I don't remember the exact ep and like you said there was no direct mention that Peter is a clone. I just happen to be among those who believe that he is a clone. Also, his Mother is still a mystery and even if he did have a Mother it doesn't rule out the possibility that she was in vitro fertilized with Walter's clone.

    Olivia Dunham/Dana Scully - It's all about Season 2

    by mrsentinel

The problem with Dunham not being a character people have really warmed up to is that they haven't really warmed up the character. She's a bit cold, a little aloof and definitely keeps people at a distance, even her own sister. Like Dana Scully, people didn't really warm up to her until season 2 because she was a little bit like Dunham. I can only say give her a little more time.

Very Awesome News About Season 2

    by monkey_tamer

Just when I needed a pick-me-up... I really have enjoyed Fringe this season. It has been especially great because my dad (who avoids sci-fi like the plague) loves it too. It is almost funny to see a 72-year-old man get so excited over the show every week. I guess I'm not as pessimistic about the show as some people on this board because I realize most first seasons usually are pretty uneven and have to work out a lot of kinks. The fact they nailed Walter right out of the gate is amazing. Plus, I think once we start to dive into Dunham's childhood in Season 2 all hell is going to break loose and we might discover there has been a dramatic reason that the writer's/Trov have been portraying the character as so in control (aka "boring").

I like her portrayal of the character. I don't think there's a problem with the actress; I think that many viewers don't like the character. They may respect the portrayal of the character and writing behind her, but that doesn't mean they LIKE her.

    I Love This Show!

    by real deal

The way it's different from the Xfiles is 1. The characters. The Xfiles never had the comic snappy byplay of Walter Bishop and his son! 2. The plot is a bit larger. It's not just a monster of the week or aliens there's the arc about ZFT and the inhabitants from another universe( which still isn't completely fleshed out yet. 3. You have all these plot points coming together : Massive Dynamic, William Bell, Olivia and her sister, Walter and Peter Bishop, and I'm still not sure about Astrid and if there's something more to her. There's also the Observer! There's so much I love about this show I can't wait to see what happens next! It has all the makings of a show that'll be on for years. If I were to say what's bad I think they need a good science advisor as there is a the occasional thing where they goof up on this. But over all it's really good well written stuff.

    by richardalpert_timepimp

But not exactly the awesomeness I had expected. The Observer stuff at the end was very cool, and I'm extremely pleased that douchenozzle Harris is finally off the show. What a worthless dick. The line about Peter's attempt to make a "popsicle stick napkin holder. Horrible design, utterly useless." was another hilarious Walter moment. Looking forward to the finale very much. I just hope its a little more revelatory than this week.

Wow, very good episode. Liv helping that firestarter chick fricasee Harris had me shouting, 'Yes! Yes!' at the TV. Kinda' a cop-out on the Observer stuff, but I can understand them wanting to save the MAJOR major revelations for the finale (and I hope Cerveris comes on as a regular cast member next season, since he basically has been on this season already!).

There's just...there's SO MUCH going on here that we either don't know about or have only gotten little hints at so far. I really think I'm going to have to go back and watch the series again before the finale, try and piece everything together.

    Only complaints:
    1. Wasn't the ZFT they found written...in German? Wasn't that why they called them 'ZFT', as those are the initials for the German translation for 'Destruction by Advancement of Technology'? Where'd that English version come from? (again, I might just need to be re-watching here...)
    2. The glass 'record player'. Eh. Maybe it was the slight over-use of scientific jargon, but I didn't quite get how that worked (although I'm sure some kind TBer will be through here ranting about how completely impossible it was, so I'll just wait...)

Also...anyone catch the 'HE IS HERE' painted on the side of the building on fire in one of Liv's flashes? Shades of Saxon (for you Who-ites) and a teaser for the next season they just found out they got, if you ask me.

    by cant_stop_yawning

Like Lost, set and endpoint. Give it 6 seasons or something and stick to it. This should be the rule for all shows of this kind - spend a few season unraveling to the point where you can't imagine the writers bringing it all back together and then hang on as they slowly put it back together. This is the future of episodic television.

Okay, figured out why I don't care for Torv..

    by allykatd

Olivia Dunham is our main character. We react and feel and view the world through her emotions, through her trials and failures, fears and frustrations, we face the same issues she faces. That is one of the purposes of the main character, to bring the audience into the emotional heart of a story. The problem with Olivia, is she doesn't feel much of anything. She takes all this weird stuff so stoically that I feel the same way. It's like, "Okay, gee, we have a burned person here. Whatever". Last night during her scene with the Douchebag I actually *FELT* her anger and frustration at the bogus psyche evalution order. And what do you you know, I felt angry at him too. She showed some freaking real emotion and I FELT it. Most of the time it seems like she's reading lines off the script. At that point in the story, I realized why I was having a hard time with her. They need to show her struggle between her inner turmoil and her outer coolness to let us know that the outer face is bullshit and that she's not so composed as she leads everyone to believe. I don't expect or want her to be a mushy emotional mess, but right now she's so cool almost nothing leaks out.

I did like this episode. I really felt for Walter, his breakdown in the restaurant was heart-breaking but once again, Olivia did not deliver. She accused him of a horrific deed, experiement on children, got mildly angry, then just left. I should be feeling sorry for HER and instead I wanted to slap her for hurting Walter. A good chararcter building scene for Olivia left in the dust. I got more emotion from Peter coming back from the restroom to find his father sobbing.

    by cant_stop_yawning

didn't catch it before making my comment, but i'm in complete agreement. charlie and astrid get far more lines but do so much more with them. e.g., there was a moment awhile back when it appeared walter was going to finally say astrid's name and she was really amusing to watch - like she was about to have a breakthrough with helen keller, only to see it fall apart. same for charlie - still think that line from one of the first episodes where he deadpan tells olivia her dead lover "told me he loved me too" was spot on.
The worst thing about Torv (and the way the writers are portraying her) is that she re-enforces a lame stereotype about career women; that they have no lives outside of work, are humorless, lack creativity, aren't cool, etc. Viewers deserve a better lead character and women deserve a better representative.

Other than that - excellent job.
Only other complaint is that Fox keeps screwing up our dvrs/tivos with their dumbass talent show.

    by monkey_tamer

Reading over these boards it is pretty obvious you fall in one of two categories: 1) Torv's acting (or lack of) drives you absolutely crazy and detracts from your enjoyment of the show or 2) Her portrayal is fine and doesn't bother you at all. Unfortunately, for group 1 things probably aren't going to change much (if you really believe it is her acting ability and not a direction the creative team is taking with the character). I'm in the latter group so it doesn't really matter to me, but I also think things are only going to continue to gel and get better in season 2 (as is the case with a lot of series). I do have a friend who is part of Group 1 and it is sad that the show will probably have an extremely limited shelf life for her. She has said she is going to give it a 4 or 5 episodes next season and if things don't change (or she can learn to except Trov) she will probably have to focus her energies elsewhere. Reading over these posts sounds like she won't be alone.

    And Anthony w... who wants

    by allykatd

Olivia to morph into a relationship-obsessed-pop-culture-spouting-hot-mess Heroine? I wouldn't care for that any more than I care for what she is now: a semi-emotionless automaton reading words off a script. For example, Sidney Bristow of Alias. She was the stone-cold operative on one side and the other side we got to experience with her and through her eyes a young woman torn between a normal life and the secret life of a spy. She was hard. She was soft. And no one could call Sidney Bristow anything but effecient at what she did. The opening scene of her telling her torturing to get the teeth in the back was brilliant. Her stumbling into the FBI and her first meeting with Michael Vaugh... how she made him nervous and squirm and how he tried to keep the upper hand. My god. That was brilliant. Sparks were flying. Sparks completely missing from Torv/Olivia. There are so many good scenes in that show. Now, I think they have given Torv those scenes, but she can't pull them off. She has those sweet scenes with her neice, but I don't believe them. They're boring. Her relationship with her sister, which could add some dimension to Olivia? Boring. Believe me, I *want* so much to like here. I'm looking for another Sidney Bristow type, a strong female lead who lights up the screen when she's on it.

    by cant_stop_yawning

She feels real dull. Maybe you haven't had too many bosses, but I've taken orders from plenty of dullards. She doesn't come off as a dummy - they throw a scene in each ep (like the cell phone deal w/ the melted glass record player) to keep her from just being an add on to the squad, but that is about it.
Also, again, as others have mentioned, she has around four or five facial expressions and a lethal habit of summarizing what all of the gifted folks around her have gathered from the evidence (much like Scully). Many of her lines can be distilled down to "...so what you are saying is...". That is what gets tiresome for me. I'd rather she be ahead of the game than forever playing catchup.
I think they are trying to do that with her in the last few episodes, but I honestly think there are probably dozens of actresses out there who could make the character edgier and more fun. The model for this role is Mulder (granted, a little more skeptical, but still Mulder). She just doesn't have the charisma.

It's one thing to say Herc overuses the word

    by hst666

That may be a legitimate criticism. Regardless, Herc is going to use it now, just because you a-holes complain every talkback.

    Anna Torv has been good.

    by hst666

I am not sure what you people have been complaining about. What are you looking for and provide an example?

    ughh

    by slkboxrman

u guys are too much. so because an actress doesnt act all emotional and feminine its not being able to pull off a scene ?? when did the world go back to sexism ? women hav to be emotional cuz thats what women do best ? torv nails every scene shes in, shes a career FBI agent, shes detached to a degree...her relationship blew up in her face, no pun intended...so shes supposd to b the typical female with her niece...isnt that what the mother is there for ? and she got quite emotional with her boss over his picking on her constantly...which turns out to b bigger than it initially seemed...u want typical females watch gossip girls or old repeats of sex and the city...losers

slkboxrman and hst666 - read before you complain

    by cant_stop_yawning2

slkboxrman if you had bothered to read the posts complaining about torv and her character (and there have been dozens over the weeks) you'd see that many people simply disagree with your (poorly written) assessment. Read allykat's posts - she is a woman and she thinks torv and her character are weak. I and many others agree; I think actually that she has become the single biggest complaint about the show. I didn't catch anyone complaining about her not being feminine and emotional - what I read were a bunch of posts, like mine, irritated with the fact that she can't act (has 4-5 facial expressions) and her character is humorless and dull. Honestly, if you pulled her out and replaced her with character with Charlie, I don't think anyone would have a problem with it - on the contrary, I think the show would do better. I didn't read anyone in these talkbacks looking to replace her with typical females (whatever those are) and it is more than a little sexist of you to insinuate that, if we did, we ought to check out gossip girl.
And hst666, here again, read the talkbacks, people have been very specific about what they don't like about torv and the character - they (and I) have given way too many examples for you to be asking for examples at this point. The most irritating posters are the ones who come in at the end of the discussion and demand information; if you can't keep up, don't post.
My bet is Fox is paying attention to these complaints about Torv because they have come up on other sites as well. I suspect next season we will see changes, e.g. Torv will get some acting lessons (too late to dump her completely), they will focus more on the other characters, and the writers will try to make dunham's character more interesting.
