Pike, Spock, Jerky Psy-Aliens, And A Hot (Sometimes Disfigured) Babe!! It's "The Cage" On This Week's STAR TREK REMASTERED!!

Published at:  May 01, 2009 2:06:49 PM CDT

Merrick

...with a reminder that "The Cage" air this weekend on STAR TREK REMASTERED.

We saw some rejiggered material from this episode when REMASTERED aired "The Menagerie" - a two parter which used portions of "The Cage" in flashbacks.

This is, however, the first actual broadcast "The Cage" in its whole, stand-alone form. It's cleaned up across the board, including reworked visual effects. A DVD of REMASTERED's third season did contain this iteration of the episode.

Why is it on now? "The Cage", the series' pre-Shatner original pilot, was remastered alongside the rest of TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES - but was held from rotation to dovetail its airing with the release of Abrams' new film. Which, like "The Cage", features Captain Christopher Pike in command of the Enterprise.

Here's an embed of the promo running on stations carrying the show:

The only station list I could find for this series (HERE) seems to be a bit out of date; stations/times have probably changed a bit since its posting - so check your listings/program grids/etc. for LOCAL stations which might be carrying the show.

These new versions should be listed as...simply...STAR TREK (no "REMASTERED"). NOTE: TV Land is airing original versions of the episodes under "STAR TREK", so you can discount listings on that network if you're seeking the remastered versions.

    Now this is "Star Trek"

    by fa_tass_dinomolester

Even if the make-up is crap and the sets all look like they're about to fall over and the costumes look like they're made out of the same material as hospital gowns, and Spock keeps shouting like he's on the deck of a clipper ship and he's got the wind in his face...this is what "Star Trek" is really about: engaging, original sci-fi, ADULT characters, and a tone of both exploration and the eeriness of outer space. But I hope JJ and his infants enjoy dressing up and pretending like they're space people...at least in Roddenberry's world no one ever shouted "Damn girl, you fine! Me a gangsta!" like Faux-Kirk in the anal rape we're going to get next week!

He only appeared in the Animated Series, and Roddenberry never considered the cartoons to be part of continuity, IIRC.

    by studmaster

The local CW station here in El Paso, TX is I think the only station in the country to broadcast Trek remastered in HD, and I believe it should be so for another year and 1/2 until all the episodes are shown again! Looks pretty good on my 60", that's right bitches, 60 INCH, HD screen! I still haven't gotten a BD player yet though, I'm waitin for them to come down a little more in price. Anybody else still gettin Remastered in HD?

First remastered broadcast, not first broadcast

    by nem_wan

"The Cage" was broadcast in its original format for the first time in 1988, as filler for missing TNG episodes during the writer's strike. It was shortly after the color print was discovered and was the only time all 64 minutes aired, in a two-hour slot padded with retrospective/promo stuff hosted by Patrick Stewart. Unfortunately this remastered broadcast will be in a one-hour slot with a ton of cuts.

So a friend of mine said ST is the same as BSG

    by kirttrik

And I had to disagree, Star Trek is the United States in space. It's naval drama. Battlestar Gallatica has robots, trying to kill humanity. Now, BSG is very similar to Star Wars. It just doesn't have the knights templars in space.

that while the new Trek does look good, Pine still appears 'boyish' while Shat-Kirk in the '60s as well as Hunter as Pike, most certainly, were clearly....men. Big difference. As said by a female character in 'Saying Anything'...DON'T be a guy...be a man.

That reaction is just classic Shatner - gives what appears to be a joke (the Takei comment) and then plugs his book!

But you could see the intensity on his face as he was watching his baby being reimagined...that was all you had to see.

I wish he first saw the new trailer (the one with Bana going "Fire Everything!"). That is an incredible trailer.

    Captain Pike was the BEST!

    by daytripper69

I keep imagining what "Star Trek" as a series would have been had Jeffrey Hunter's Capt. Pike been the star of the show, instead of Kirk. Kirk is decidedly more friendlier and charming than Pike, but Pike had more intensity and seriousness. Kinda like the difference between Roger Moore and Sean Connery. Would we have seen a better class of stories? Hard to say at this point, but it's fun to imagine.

    I don't get it

    by everythingeverywherestinks

Why would anyone bother watching this trite, recycled, unengaging horse crap - a relic from the bad old days of television - when the visionary genius that is JJ Abrams will be unleashing his concept of what Star Trek should have been next week?
Why waste one second of your time watching grown men wearing velour and sparkly nylon and latex appliances on their heads skip around on obvious plywood sets spouting bullshit dialogue and desperately trying to keep a straight face when a cinematic masterpiece that will be spoken of in hushed tones for decades to come is about to be gifted upon you next week?
Throw away your pre-Abrams Star Trek crap to make shelf space, for when this movie is released (actually it's not going to be released so much as it will escape) it is going to dominate the hearts and minds of human beings everywhere in the universe.
On May 8th Muslims will stop fighting Jews, whites will stop fearing blacks, blacks will in turn no longer be angry at whites and the whole wide world will have a giant love-in once JJ Abrams shows us how to be the "model human beings" that Gene Roddenberry attempted to do and failed so completely at.
Bah...who needs this remastered shyte? It's just a smelly pig with lipstick.
By the way, I hope your sarcasm detectors were on the proper setting. I wouldn't want you to take me seriously.

Sarcasm meters don't work here, you're going to die heh

That aside there is room for both. It's just a shame that the plywood sets will be banished to a bygone age, as with them the concepts, themes and crucially the actors HAD to make an impression with the best of what they had.

I would be getting excited but in terms of remaster all that matters is that The Good The Bad and The Ugly is coming in 1080p.

    by videovorlon

Just watched The Cage on WPIX HD in New York City ... they deleted entire scenes for this morning's broadcast.

One example: the entire scene in front of the old castle, where Pike defends Vena from the giant warrior -- gone entirely.

    Shame on them.

    Cuts

    by gislef_crow

As noted, it's probably your local station cutting material. TVLand cuts the originals, too. More advertising time necessary in 2009 than 1966. Actually, it's probably Paramount sending stations a "cut down" version: what gets cut happens pretty consistently on various stations. Sometimes it's done pretty smoothly, right in the middle of conversations where they literally just drop a sentence from a character's conversation. Sometimes there's continuity goofs created, like in "Patterns of Force" when the scene where they steal a key from a Nazi soldier is cut, making the next scene where they suddenly have a key kinda puzzling.

ad makes it seem so badass and epic

    by gungan slayer

what a badass ad for The Cage. And sigh, I wish Abrams was no where near Trek, but alas, it's too late for that. At least there's good word of mouth for the new film, but, I dunno yet. I'm still on the side of the fence. I don't like this whole reboot concept. I mean, why couldn't they have just taken this cast and create a new crew? Why the hell do we have to stick with Kirk and Crew? Let's move on please

We've had the Original Cast for two TV shows, six-and-a-quarter movies, and countless novels, comics, video games, ETC. What exactly do JJ and friends think they're going to do with these characters that hasn't been done already, and in a much better way?

They have always butchered the shows

    by blackmantis

This is how it would have originally aired to fit into the alloted hour with commercial breaks. We have only seen the whole thing on home video over the years because there are no commercial needs. Even with the original series, when they started putting them on VHS was the first time many people saw the full episodes without any cuts.

"The Cage" needs a 90-minute slot

    by nem_wan

Since "The Cage" was unaired during the series run there's no Roddenberry-blessed one-hour broadcast edit. (The second pilot was cut from 55 minutes to 50 minutes for NBC prime time.) "The Cage" at 64 minutes could air uncut in a 90-minute slot with the same commercial ratio as a regular 43-minute syndicated hour.

    by bizarrojerry

They've gone back to these originals precisely because the latter versions of Star Trek were progressively less and less popular. The final straw was cancelled Enterprise and one or two unpopular TNG era movies. Rather than try another new batch of Trek, the producers obviously decided to try a new approach and to get audiences by combining nostalgia for the old characters, and a new twist for new audiences.

I didn't think new fx added much

    by bizarrojerry

From what I saw, the new fx did little more than trim a second or two from original transition scenes, etc. The new additions would not have necessitated removing entire sequences. Part of that probably has to do with the fact that I think there was less commercial time per hour back in the 60s.

so I watched the first 10 min of this last night. There is an early scene where Pike orders them to head out at "Space Warp factor 7". We cut to the new effects and see the ship coasting.. then cut to the next scene ans we see the ship coasting into orbit around a planet.

    BSG was "Space Mormons"

    by kid z

And damn was that final episode awful. I've never seen a finale kill an entire series before. Original Trek was The Kennedy Administration In Space, TNG was Aging Hippies in Space, DS9 was Generation X in Space, Voyager was Menopause in Space, Enterprise was The DMV in Space (well, watching it was a similar experience to having to stand in line at the DMV, anyway).

    Captain Pike the Best?

    by seal87

I don't know how you could say that and still wonder what it would have been like if he continued for the series. Gene kept trying to steer the series to the image of the Cage. You could see it in TMP, the first season of TNG, and even though he had passed, they used a lot of what he was trying to do in Enterprise. Dull colored uniforms, one piece when possible, People having actual dysfunction, and not playful banter, and lot's of atheism. And always making sure to push the envelope with controversial subject matter. Of coarse a lot of that was seen as an audience shrinker by the other people working on the shows and movies, so you can see some ad-libbing, natural stuttering that doesn't get edited out, people getting along and meshing harmoniously, such as any Trek with Shatner in it. Some found this was a model for success and whenever emulated, it worked. You might see it took over TNG right after Dr. Polasky left, and a lot quicker in DS9, and almost from the start of Voyager. Enterprise was getting really good in the 4th season too.

    BSG

    by seal87

I keep hearing Battlestar Galactica was about Mormons. I guess it must be, but whoever likes to say it was the same as Star Trek or Star Wars is usually a troll. Criss Crossing Sci Fi is a sure way to anger fans. Well it would possibly work with the original TARDIS that didn't have any problem crossing parallel dimensions. Cause a lot of sci fi doesn't like to acknowledge other ones, so the dimensional barrier is there, even though it doesn't have to be. Star Wars is in the past in M33 by my estimate, BSG is in the present, or at least the TV movies were, Star Trek is in the Future, not usually overlapping Buck Rogers. So if there was ever a desire to bring any together rather than to compete and distance from eachother, it would be possible with Doctor Who, before the 2005 version introduced a crisis taking place whenever a TARDIS goes sideways in time, which worked perfectly in the original series.

    Reboot

    by seal87

I agree, the reboot is a sad way to honor people who did it in the harder times. It could have been better if, instead, it just did the same story, the Academy Days, without needing to recant everything. Also it's messed up how nobody who makes Trek comes from the Military anymore. They think they have to make technology better in their prequal shows, cause it's farther along now, but if they had ever been in the Navy or other branch, they would know about the military/industrial complex. For instance, a 3 billion dollar Nuclear Aircraft Carrier, commissioned in 1998 was made with 1960s equipment in many systems. Civilian ships get top of the line stuff as do commercial ones, but the government makes deals for political reasons, to include things like $60,000 toilet seats. You know, it's a lot like a hospital bill. If you get it itemized, you pay for things that were just there and never used, or $80 for a glass of water. So if we have nice compact cell phones that only get a signal when close enough to a tower, why does a communicator with a range better than a ham radio have to compete with that for miniturization? Are there still people thinking that cell phones are operating off of sattelites as they should have been?
