Crazy Handsome Fan Fic Film Trailer for THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM!

Published at:  Apr 28, 2009 2:16:27 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm not usually one for Fan Fic Films, but every now and again, when I see one that just frickin' looks better than it has any right to.... well, I share with all of y'all. Coming up over the next year or two, we're going to be seeing an onslaught of HOBBIT news. I already have fans writing in to me wanting details - and Guillermo and crew are hard at work on pre-production. Hopefully, they'll be releasing more tidbits as we move forward.

Meanwhile, it seems some highly capable fans have created a prequel to THE HOBBIT, which from the below trailer - seems to indicate a quest to find the creature named Gollum, whom it is rumored... That GOLLUM HAS THE ONE TRUE RING!!!

These fans couldn't wait to see more Middle Earth adventures and it seems they've made their own. Take a look, personally, I'm curious to see the whole thing now. Thanks goes to the "Tailender" known as Conan_The_Humble for the heads up!

And that trailer's a decent PJ impression, but you'd have to somewhat demented to dress up like Aragorn and go running around the woods looking for Gollum. If you're going to spent time, energy and money on an indie film, why not use original characters so it'll be your intellectual property, and you can make your money back, as opposed to this "fan film" nonsense?

I wish these people would channel their energies into making something original. Clearly they know how to operate the equipment very well, but to channel all their resources and energy into making what amounts to pretend movies...what a shame. Just a bunch of technicians, but no ideas. Like that Sandy Collora guy, who made Batman: Dead End. Of course, they'll be right at home in Hollywood, should this catch someone's attention (I have no illusions that the big studios are looking for anyone with original ideas).

    by codymr

a curious thing. Over the years the production values have gotten better and better and the stories are even amusing from time to time. But I wonder what is the ultimate goal? If you really want to make a film, why not make something original, especially with the amount of effort that goes into these projects? Or, are these used for demo reals for people looking to get into an FX house and the like?

    by dreamwriter

Whatever story they are telling is not from any Tolkien book. The one time Gollum is hunted for in the books, I think *maybe* two paragraphs are given to it. And even that wouldn't make sense with how this trailer is setup, talking about Gollum knowing the whereabouts of The One Ring - in the books/movies, that wasn't figured out until after talking to Gollum.

How are they even allowed to show anyone a film involving characters from Lord of the Rings? I know it will be freely distributed so they will not make a profit, but surely hits on the website to watch/download it will generate advertising revenue for someone other than those who own the characters? The trailer will probably generate income, hell this article is generating cash for AICN. I don't get it.

This looks like just a cheaper copy of the worst sides of the blockbusters we wet our panties over, rather than using the low budget in a way that compliments the movie, a la John Cassavetes and Jim Jarmusch.

You don't need a big budget to write dialogue that isn't completely facetious and ham-fisted. You just need a pen and paper (or a computer and a word processor). Instead this sounds like it's been written by the scriptwriter to Runescape or something.

Fan made films are just that..

    by geomancer21

A film made by fans. Anyone asking why must never have been a huge fan of anything. It may well be something made by people with too much time on their hands, but its made by people that truly love and respect the property. They had an idea that they thought would fill out the universe somewhat and went ahead and did it.and this stuff doesn't get shit on by studios and that as much as you think. its about as illegal as any fan fic. hell chances are you'll probly end up seeing this at some convention in the future. I think it looks amazing for a fan production. this like some of the fan made stuff i've seen for Half Life really make me admire the dedication some fan have to something they love. I personally hope New Line or some other studio sees this and offers these guys a job.

You're an ass. It is "Crazy Handsome" for a fan made production. A film with no real chance at turning a profit or earning any money at all. The people that put money into this, put money into it - to just see it get made... PERIOD.

JOHN CARTER was an entirely different scale. It wasn't set to be "handsome" - but "Mind-Blowing". People that have seen our presentation reels will agree on that.

    by maelstrom_zero

...how can they possibly make an entire film about looking for Gollum? As far as I can remember in the Appendices/Council of Elrond, Aragorn basically looked for Gollum's trail for a while, went through pretty hard times, almost gave up, but found Gollum at the edge of Mordor. Then he spent weeks dragging Gollum back to the wood-elves in Mirkwood. I can't imagine this being a very compelling storyline.

Not true... I am a HUGE LOTR fan and a HUGE Star Wars fan (less so about the prequels) and I am a HUGE Indy fan and a HUGE BSG fan. I am a more moderate fan of the ALIEN, Star Trek and Bond franchises.

That said, my fandom manifests itself in ways that don't make me want to create a fan film. First, being a Star Wars and Indy fan as a kid got me into films and then film studies in university. Now I produce TV news and docs which use visual story telling skills in a different, but similar way to dramatic film or TV. For the other series that are mentioned above I still collect books on the "making of" and "art of" and their soundtracks among other things... even though I no longer work in dramatic TV or film.

You can be a huge fan and collect, read, listen etc etc without feeling that you need to dress up and make a knock off film. Most feature film directors I know of are "fans" of other films, but they don't usually make a film that is an impression of the original (remakes aside). Spielberg is a fan of John Ford films, so he pays homage to Ford though his work, not by aping The Searchers and doing a film about what Lucy's life was like living with the Comanche natives.

The people at Pirate Bay are facilitating the distribution of copyrighted, pay-to-have/own material. If you want the new Black Eyed Peas album (and got help you if you do) you have to pay for it. Pirate Bay makes it so you don't have to pay for it. That is called stealing. These movies are for and by fans. NO money is made or exchanged before, during or after the process. It is made to be given away for FREE. You can't steal something that is free. Owners of the original copyrighted material let them do what they like (in a good faith gesture) as long as it does not infringe on their own money making endeavors. No one is going to watch this fun little movie INSTEAD of paying for the original LOTR movies.

I'm not saying that fans HAVE to make fan films, or write Fan fics. I'm a huge Discworld fan, a moderate Star trek fan, and a big fan of a number of other things. But I too never felt the need to do those things. But I can understand. And I wouldn't knock them for tryingand its not like we are talking about a spielberg here, or a lucas, or any other actor/director/writer/etc that has made it big. I mean, the biggest film credit listed for the people involved here is one guy that Played the baby clark in Superman 4. numerous people making money in hollywood started doing their own little films. playing around with a camera, making tiny shit projects, often taking them from movies they love. if not directly at least inspired by. And then made their break later, either through one of their tiny projects getting recognized, or working their way up through other people.s films. Its just this tiny shit project isn't quite so tiny and is hardly shit.all this is is just something that is going to end up as an extra on a blu-ray for a movie one of these guy do in the future. and like someone said the fact its LOTR-based is the only reason you even know about it now. (it looking as good as it does has something to do with it too.)

Yeah, we're sane enough to NOT run through the woods skewering guys in orc make-up and pretending we're Viggo Mortensen, and we're the "douches". May want to rethink that, you putz.

And I stand by my initial comment...that anyone who spends time, energy or money making any sort of independent film should produce their own original creation so they can either: 1, try and make their money off of it; 2, use it break into the film industry, is that's their goal; or 3, parlay it into a feature, (see the Neil Blomkamp or whatever's "District 9"). Anything else is fan wank and waste of time. And BTW, I'm a huge Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Alien, and Predator fan, and have done some pretty geeky things, (including traveling like 5 hours to see ROTK in the cinema), and I still think fan films seem excessive.

This is NOT a prequel to THE HOBBIT as far as the timeline goes. The hunt for Gollum took place over intervals of several years, sometime AFTER Bilbo's farewell feast, and before Gandalf sent Frodo packing to Bree.

Gandolf at first told Frodo he was delayed because he was held captive. That doesn't sound very exciting, but during the Council a lot more was revealed. Maybe the same is true for Aragorn, He didn't want to say that he almost gave up because he had to cut down the mightiest Ent in the forest with a herring.

    FOR HARRY

    by lucasdefender

I just want to say that the early reviews for Wolverine on Rottentomatoes are all positive. I say this because you really dissed it in a hard way last week because of what seemed like a lack of knowledge on your part. I just hope that if this movie truly is good that you will be honest and confess your blunder. I am not saying that I think Fox deserves any apology whatsoever. Fox deserves a kick in the buns for its behavior as of late. They deserve to fail. That being said, Gavin Hood and Hugh Jackman deserve to succeed and really deserve an apology from you if the film turns out well.
I would also like to see you admit that your anger had nothing to do with whatever it was you claimed you were upset about. Truth is it was at Fox. I just want an admission because this site has always rooted for the superheroes when no one else would and it was upsetting seeing you pee all over Wolverine without fair treatment.
    Thats all.

Yeah, Harry, I thought not. Your "mind-blowing" presentation "reels" are probably more impressive if they're unseen. That way, you can insist they're awesome and never have to prove it. The same squishy legality that lets you post this LOTR fan film on your site would easily allow you to post your John Carter stuff, but we all know that ain't happening. It's one thing to berate someone, Harry, but to berate them with the threat of something you have no intention of exploiting? That's called "bullying."

..you stole the words right out of my mouth, awesome.

I've made several original short films as well as one full length. I've shown them at festivals and have gotten some good feedback. Along with those I made an Assassin's Creed fan film for a contest, I didn't win. My point is, it wasn't 100% my creation, and sure we looked like a group of LARPers running around, but it was still a group of film-makers and actors doing the same crap we do on our Original pieces. Are we any bigger dorks, just cause we're basing it on something else? No. Fan films are made for a very specific audience, hard core fans not for money and not for overly pretentious people like many posters here. I appreciate fan films, it's geekism at its best.

I can almost picture them fighting over who got to be Aragorn and who got to be Gandalf in pre-production; all of them doing their best impressions for their friends to decide.

There is an implication in the book that the Ring affects fate and circumstances around it, to move it to where it wants to be. There is also an external fate that positions the good guys (or conflicted guys, such as Gollum), to be in the right place at the right time to thwart Sauron's plan.Gandalf would've succumbed to the temptation to take the Ring for himself. If an Eagle flew it alone, something coincidental would've happened to it: such as, upon attempting to toss it into the lava, the Ring would've bounced off a rock and rolled down the mountainside. These are the vague rules hinted at by Tolkien for Middle Earth. Silly, yes, but...The Hobbits aren't as susceptible to being corrupted by it as are the other humanoid races, for reasons I won't get into unless you are curious (but they did indeed succumb to temptation at the end; Frodo tried to take it for himself -- he had to have his finger bitten off to let it go -- and the external fate had Gollum there to be the one to personally "deliver" it into the lava). Smeagol's desire for the Ring was also an unconscious wish to be freed from his torment.

were under orders to not interfere directly with the fate of the peoples of Middle Earth by taking on Sauron themselves, but to merely guide them toward their destinies. Saruman defied those orders.Oh, and the Eagles would've had to contend with the Nazgul riding the fell beasts.

Next, "A Clear and Present Ranger"...

    by snake foreskin

A movie about Aragorn in elementary school. He used to get picked on, until one day he cleaved the school bully in twain. It also helped that he was sporting stubble by age 7.
That film will be followed by "Aragorn Games", which tells the tale of Aragorn learning to play the ancient game of dodgeball...with an elven blade.
Then, of course, comes "Hobbit Recon", which is about Bilbo and Gandalf in search of some extra-potent pipe weed. Along the way, they meet up with a deranged elf played by Neil Patrick Harris, who steals Gandalf's cart. They also get imprisoned for a short time at a place called Guantanamo Shire, but they eventually escape and return to Bag End.
After that comes "Gaybow 6", about a group of prissy elves who team up to take down an Oliphaunt. Most of them die, but not from what you think.
And then, because the producers are really milking it for all they can, comes "O.R.X.". In a departure from the other movies, it tells the comic tale of a group of Orcs who follow the Nazgul around, tending to their winged mounts, the fell beasts. They wash them, feed them and clean up their "fellings".
One day, one of the Orcs decides to try his hand at riding the winged lizard, and he has such a great time gallavanting through the sky, terrorizing the race of men and other denizens of Middle Earth, that the rest soon follow him. Much hilarity ensues. In a tragic turn of events, however, they fly too close to the Eye of Sauron and plunge thousands of feet to their doom. Mount Doom, that is.

  • ... it needs far better directing. And it is a missed chance to make something great on a movie based level and not some awkward hollywood echoing in the woods. But alone the endurance to make and finish such a movie is a big archivement.

    Good work Conan m'lad!

    by morgoth

Tailender indeed.Pretty decent effort for fan-fiction and, technically, it IS covered in the Appendices of LotR, the book. So, it's already covered under the LotR licensing. Much like PJ/GDT had planned for the source of their now abandoned "bridge movie".Good on ya folks for doing this film...it's certainly not a waste of time and we Tolkien fans appreciate the effort. Imagine that, art for the sake of art...what a novel concept.

To people hating on the haters:

    by fatassdino_molester

fuck off. If you can't grasp why people think this is rediculous, despite our articulating our points clearly several times, then that's your problem. Personally, I can't believe adults want to dress up like Dunedain Rangers and slay orcs after they get off work at the gas station.

BTW, for a perfect example of why fan films suck: http://www.hiddenfrontier.com/

The above makes Enterprise, Voyager, and JJ's Drek Trek look like Ikiru by comparison.

I doubt this will be covered in the new movies

    by pokadoo

In an interview with the two beards in this months Empire, they reveal that the story of The Hobbit will be spread over both movies, with the Gandalf/White Council/Sauran asides beefing it out. Maybe we'll see further Middle Earth films, some day though. Fingers crossed.

Really well done. The upload was a bit dark in parts but wow. I thought it was a well produced looking online film! Dailymotion helped produce it?

Well, apparently no one here has ever dressed up like a Dunedain Ranger, nor looked for Gollum, so I'm posting on a website which would be as impartial (at best) to this crappy looking crap as anywhere else.

    Typical Talkback Minority

    by darth_tarantino

Whilst plenty of Talkbackers are able to express their personal issues with the whole idea of fan films, whilst at the same time acknowledging the BLATANT talent on display in this trailer from all involved, some of you just insist on the usual prattle of 'OOH, DO SOMEFINK ORIGINAL!!' It might be a novel idea for some of you to perhaps go out and make your own movies - based on your own original ideas - and allow us to see if they come up to scratch with this particularly well made fan film. Once you've done something original, then you've earned your right to demand it of other fans already 'having a go' at film making. Until then, why not try simply understanding the skill involved? I agree with other Talbackers that fan films would be the perfect forum for OTHER Tolkein works that will likely never see the BIG SCREEN. With talent and ability of the level on display in this one, I'd say the Tolkein fan film community could come up with quite a cool little series of net movies.

    I love this bizzare claim...

    by fa_tass_dinomolester

that one has to make a fan film before one is allowed to share one's opinion about someone else's fan film. So, by your logic, I'd have to be leader of a country before I declared George W. Bush a complete and utter sub-mental clusterfuck of epic proportions. Yeah, doesn't quite make a lot of sense...

    Come on now...

    by jaymrobinson

I swear, some of you are argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative. Just because you can make a case that they are stealing the style of the LOTR movies, and it's not original, etc. doesn't mean you have to come on here and take a shit on everyone who thinks it's kind of cool. If you don't like it, don't watch it, but don't come on here just to shit on it. It's one thing to talk about making a fan film like this, it's another to actual go find the people, resources, and spend all that time actually doing it. I think it makes the people who come on here to be negative just look pathetic - contrasting action vs. board trolling that anyone can do. And yes, I do think it is trolling if you come on here to be negative for no good reason at all.
