‘I Know Very Well Who You Are!!’ Antepenultimate FRINGE!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
It was revealed at Thursday’s PaleyFest “Fringe” event that Anna Torv will be the only regular to share a scene in the season finale with Leonard Nimoy, who plays Massive Dynamic founder (and Walter Bishop’s old lab partner) William Bell.
(Nimoy’s voice was heard interacting with a very young Olivia Dunham in last week’s memorable episode, which saw Dunham learning about her bizarre and forgotten youth in Florida.)
Series co-creator J.J. Abrams confirmed that Nimoy would be back for season two.
Abrams also revealed that Massive Dynamics became Massive Dynamic because someone poached a website domain.
Another revelation was that Fox wanted to plant The Observer at the Obama inauguration but couldn’t quite work it out.
Find IGN’s write-up of the PaleyFest event here.
Last week’s rooftop scene was quite striking. One wonders if Olivia’s sister, who has been hanging around quite a few episodes now alongside Olivia’s niece, remembers anything of the Massive Dynamic experimentation to which she was subjected. I sense impending death for the sister and impending kidnapping for the niece.
Fox says of tonight’s episode, titled “Midnight”:
Fringe Division is on the case when severely mutilated bodies drained of spinal cord fluid begin to pile up. After their investigation leads them to a scientist (guest star Jefferson Mays) with possible ties to the Z.F.T. bioterrorist cell, they are shocked to discover the identity and motive of the killer. When the kills occur with increasing frequency, Olivia (Anna Torv), Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Walter (John Noble) go to desperate lengths to stop them.
Fox says of next week’s episode, titled “The Road Not Taken”:
First her bad dreams became reality, and now Olivia is “dreaming” while awake, seeing elaborate bleak visions of things not really there. While investigating the disturbing case of a woman who apparently spontaneously combusted, Olivia throws caution to the wind and mines her unexplained visions for clues. Meanwhile, Walter comes clean about his prior knowledge of the Z.F.T. manifesto, and Peter’s secret project is revealed and yields surprising help in unraveling the mystery.
Fox says of the May 12 season finale, “There’s More Than One of Everything,” which introduces Leonard Nimoy as William Bell:
The sudden and unexpected attack on someone with close ties to Fringe Division, the return of bioterrorist David Robert Jones (guest star Jared Harris) and the inexplicable disappearance of Walter set the stage for a non-stop, nail-biting season finale of FRINGE. Questions will be answered, observations made, loyalties tested and truths and identities revealed.
9 p.m. Tuesday. Fox.

First.
-
... but I likes it enough to stick with it until the finale. Damn curious to see how they leave us hanging over the summer.
-
Yeah, I said it.
-
and my schedule and the hours I keep, but ever since it came back from hiatus, I have not been able to stay awake through a single episode of Fringe. And tonight I won't even be home to watch it... And I was a big fan of the show before they took that inertia derailing break.
-
To be up there with Lost if it doesn't get A: Cancelled too soon or B: Lose it's way too soon like Heroes did.
-
The only thing that's left worth seeing after the deaths of BSG, 24 and Lost.....Although...maybe........ I loved Caprica.......
-
or any other variation there of.
-
No wonder only crap on FOX right now.
-
antepenultimate and penultimate are becoming the go-to phrase for pretentiousness on this site.
-
Quit the hyperbole about this and other shows (Chuck, Breaking Bad, etc). Last weeks ep was suprisingly good being written by the Batman & Robin guy. Still wanting more Zack Whedon please.
-
In that I don't love it, but it keeps it me watching by virtue of the fact that it isn't too blatantly stupid. And the characters (some of them anyway) are mostly engaging.
What I would really like to see, is for the show to slowly come into its own, much as I understand that Lost has (though I stopped watching it in season 3). I like to see a show progress to the point where, at the end, when you look back at the pilot, you go "Wow. How the heck did we wind up *here* ?" -
Is that we're being eased into things a bit, JJ started this show and LOST is on its last season, Fringe could potentially be a way bigger show than we're being led to beleive... I'm thinking the next 3 ep's will be pretty mental, setting up for season 2.
Given the amount of promo fox is pouring into this show and it being from the *Gasp* "Creator" of lost, they're not about to drop it like a hot potato, none of the cast seem to have any other commitments either.
I'd be willing to bet we'll see some sort of internet "Lost experience" type of internet campaign coming over the summer. -
there's been some imaginative deaths this season
wonder how they'll top it next year -
They'll top it the same way JJ topped the first season of Lost - with boring repetitiveness.
-
the were-porcupine on the airplane
that was an awesome transformation scene, esp for tv
I missed 3 or so eps mid season though -
..keep me coming back to Fringe. Some strong performances with witty banter, and an intriguing ongoing mystery that I want to see explained. But I've been burned a lot lately with ongoing mysteries leading to massively disappointing resolutions.
I'm getting pretty sick, though, of the following dumb ideas endlessly rehashed in sci-fi. Somebody please, never use these again:
1) Viruses couldn't scale up, and if they did they wouldn't look like slugs, yet alone move like slugs. (see also Voyager)
2) 'Re-writing' DNA won't transform you into a new shape unless that new shape is cancerous
3) Macro-scale biological growth and change is SLOW, people. It won't happen overnight, yet alone as you watch.
4) If you were to successfully mix snake and spider DNA, for example, you wouldn't end up with a snake with spider legs.
Just talk to a biologist, would you? There must be hundreds of great sci-fi plot ideas out there that aren't nearly so absurd and haven't already been done to death. -
Apr 28, 2009 4:30:43 AM CDT
Pretty sure the were-porcupine ep was a Zack Whedon script.
by amy chasing
As was the transgenetic snake ep. And yes, that's how you do a transformation and rampage moment on TV.
Did you see the teleportation eps? They were mid season (and story-arc-ish). -
the latest craze is nanobots
I think ST:Voyager was the first to use it regulary and as both a hazard and save. The Stargates used them fairly regulary also.
It's the new The Virus -
Yeah thankfully I don't think Fringe has gone there yet, has it?
-
no, those were the ones I missed.
Saw one where she confonted that guy in prison, but cam't recall if he got beamed out that ep or not.
And I saw the mole fbi guy experimenting by phasing his hand into a safe.
But never saw where they went with all that -
I don't recall a nanobot ep
I think miniaturization at that scale would have had to of been impossible at Walters time.
And the seem writers savy enough to realize it -
Hmmm. Not so sure.
-
ep where Walter first sees a cell phone, a laptop? Gets his hands on them?
I bet he cackled with joy and talked about it was imposible to build such small devices with so much function
Most of Walters stuff seems to be biological, and fields (EM spectrum) with particle physics -
I bet he cackled with joy and talked about it was imposible to build such small devices with so much function *in his time...
-
I mean't I'm not so sure about the writer's savvyness!
-
some bad apostrophization there. Sorry. And why do I keep putting one in 'meant'? Why? Why?
-
So... is that a No on the root-beer float?
-
And - just so I can plan my alcohol purchases - how often does Olivia say this ep 'but, but, but - that's impossible isn't it? '
-
She's partially in denial (especially now), and has had... how many crazy things happen to her lately?
I'd be a bit fucked up too. -
Antepintopantopentopenultimate.

Initially I thought this show was crap. I was wrong.
by christian_bale_trashed_my_lights
It's a good solid show with a strong mythology behind it. I'm looking forward to seeing where things go... especially if it's building up to a full-on parallel world war!Well done FOX. For the first time in years you've made something worth my time.
-
I've noticed you. You never write anything and pop up at least once on every talkback. Are you a FOX marketting plant? Do I win a prize for noticing you?
-
Because I watched it and can't tell you a damn thing that happened apart from Olivia being disturbed by strange events, Walter saying something quirky, and Peter doing nothing apart from providing the occasional snarky comment.
-
... observations made, loyalties tested, truths and identities revealed, the second season debut delayed until March 2010 and the show ultimately cancelled by FOX after five season 2 episodes have aired. Hey, just an educated guess!

Fringe s2 needs Yancy Butler as recurring villianess.
by evilwizardglick
I find it kind of weak there is no recurring villian/villianess. An equal and opposite to the Fringe team.
Sure we have shady groups who may or may not be "evil". But we have no Joker to Fringes Batman.
Thus the need for Yancy Butler. Her voice and acting skills would offset Torv considerably. Hell they could use the voice alone, as most recently with Nimoy, to help establish the character. -
I found the larvae growing to be a tire retread of the bug in the traitors chest. End those and use new vehicles. Like over used Nanobots.
-
"I sincerely hope Agent Dunham meant to do that*
Last week's episode was surprisingly good. Usually gratuitous girl-on-girl scenes ruin everything (see OC Season 2 with Marisa and Seth's "girlfriend"), but it was actually well-employed and a bit eerie last week. Hopefully tonight's episode will be more arc-driven. It may be just me, but it's usually more interesting when it is. -
Fringe deserves a pass. Its the only new show of the season that's even watchable without having to get hopped up on something. And "Snakes in a Tree" was written by Zach Weedon, Amy Chasing.
-
Dude. Put down the science textbook and have a little imagination.

-
I remember living in the same condo building as her during the WitchBlade, unhinged coke binge days. She was pleasant but looked like shit and sniffed a lot. Dude DropZone was her peak. Its over. Fringe is awesome! Not perfect. But still worthwhile and engaging.

Oh and Yancy's 'voice' is cribbed from Linda Hamilton T2
by stormwatcher
Think on it. You know it.
-
If the LOST Island had a Poo it would look like Fringe.
Now bring on the Lost Talkback! -
Maybe you should stop being a close-minded fool and actually try watching the first 5-10 episodes of this before making an assessment like this. Especially considering it was created by the same people who made Lost, which apparently, you love. You make no sense, man.
-
they removed the disgusting medical stuff, like the lab-grown ear in the food a couple of weeks ago.I still don't get why Peter isn't the lead though, he's more interesting than Dunham.
-
I stoppped watching after the third episode because it ripped off X-Files far too openly and there was no Mulder-Scully chemistry whatsoever between the main characters.
Seriously, guys, does it get any better or are the fans of this show twelve and have never seen an X-Files ep? -
I have watched this show. The best episode was the Pilot. That's it, it's done, it's ran out of gas.
Your only hope is to switch over to Lost.
BTW, just because the 'creator" created it doesn't mena it had the same writers or cast, or production crew. Now you make no sense mannnn. -
No, I'm just kidding guys.
-
The answer to your question is YES. I quit too but was lured back and torrented the ones I missed. Starting from Episode Five ("In Which We Meet Mr Jones"), the show starts to build towards something pretty good.I'd recommend jumping back in because they're starting to connect the dots now and what they're building towards sounds pretty fucking awesome.
-
HOLY SHIIIIIIIIT!!!!! {-.-}
-
I think Hercules is just trying to annoy the shit out of all of us...
-
Everything on FRINGE is original and innovative.
EVERYTHING.
-
It was craptastic for the first 12 or so episodes and then rose to adequate and now flirts with being good. The episode where it started to try to improve was The Transformation and the following episode Ability was pretty decent.
-
For those of you who don't know, it basically means "second to last", as in the chapter preceding the final chapter in a book. Using contexts clues, I'm guessing that antepenultimate means "next to the the next to the last". It's a word nobody uses, because it's STUPID. Please stop using it, Herc. Every fucking day I read some new article where you have slipped it in.
-
Did anyone else make the connection.
Homage or rip-off -
Ya, 13 doing body shots of stripper last night on House was hot.

Hey, I am an even bigger cynic. But Fringe/X-Files can co-exist.
by cotton mcknight
I refused to watch the 4400 and Heroes because it's basically an X-men ripoff. But Fringe can completely co-exist with the X-Files. For one thing, the pacing is completely different. Another thing is, the main character isn't completely bananas. With Mulder, you could never tell if the guy was delusional- did he ever have proof his sister was abducted, for example? Mulder was always going off the deep end and Scully was reeling him back in. The nutcase on Fringe is Dr. Bishop, but he comes in to analyze a freakish occurance after it's happened, and it usually has a link to some experiment he did back in the 80s. The leads, Olivia and Peter, are fairly "normal" people who have been thrown in a fish out of water scenerio, dealing with the insanity around them. Of course there are similarities to the X-files, but it's unique enough to co-exist peacefully without it being called a blatant ripoff.
-
Roof scene reminded me of a brilliant film called The Happening.
-
Last weeks was excellent. That rooftop scene gave me the willy's big time, and it was great to hear Leonard Nimoy's voice .
-
And taking the rest of FRINGE into consideration, my money is on ripoff. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that waited for David Tennant to pop out going "Oh, BLOOD CONTROL! I haven't seen blood control in ages!"
-
Imho... this show is neither great, nor bad. Its not a watershed series like X-FILES or LOST, nor is it a trainwreck like Heroes or Dollhouse. The writing is actually pretty decent, but the primary acting --- John Noble aside --- really bottlenecks the series.
No offense to FRINGE fans... but X-FILES had Mulder and Scully. LOST has Desmond and Penny. 24 has Jack and Renee. Tony and Michelle. I honestly just don't feel connected to anyone in FRINGE. Charlie? Olivia? And Anna Torv and Josh Jackson have always been "meh" to me.
I like FRINGE, but for my X-FILES fix of the week, I go to SUPERNATURAL on Thursday nights. -
Please. I'd hardly call that memorable duo.
-

I just dont understand why the Mighty Ducks guy is still in the
by ice_agent
His character is always just sort of "around". I mean, if the writers wanted him to be more than a guest star, they should have made him an FBI agent from the pilot.
-
I don't know about the voice thing. Mann and Machine filmed before T2 was released. One would have to examine her earlier work.
Even if she were tagged for villainous counterpart to Torv she wouldn't appear in every episode. Just a handful per season. They could even use her voice for a few.
Yancy needs the comeback, she is a female Downey. Well B movie female Downey. -
Only idiots think is good. Not only a poor man's X-Files... it's a poor-imbecile's X files. Hope this show ends.
-
Only idiots think is good. Not only a poor man's X-Files... it's a poor-imbecile's X files. Hope this show ends.
-
Fringe not bad, I actually laugh at Walter's antics and the snark.... does remind me a ton of X-files but without the aliens and the sub plots of probes and egg stealing gov't bastards...
-
Well, my point was merely that some shows have lead characters that can act. Because seriously... Freckles Bauer > Rupert Murdoch's niece. Yeah.
-
The thing is- those ideas *aren't* imaginative. Not at all. They are really really old and derivative. Pick up a textbook. You might find some real inspiration.
-
this brain dead X-Files rip-off will air. I say two at the most.
-
I really don't care much that Nimoy is going to be appearing...he is old and will make only occasional appearances next year I suspect.
Next season, here is a wish list
1. No more multi-month breaks - it will kill the show.
2. More Astrid - her interplay w/ Noble is great. 3. More Astrid. 4. More of the dude who teleported himself out of the German prison. 5. Give Blair Brown something to do other than speak in riddles and hand over the one piece of equipment they need to solve the case. 5. More of Charlie - that guy is a good actor and deserves more and better lines. 6. Find something to do with Pacey - for instance, try making him the center of the show for half the season, like while Torv disappears mysteriously. 7. Have Torv disappear mysteriously for, I don't know, say half the season. 8. During the half season that Torv disappears (most likely to her Uncle's estate in St. Barts), hire her an acting coach. 9. No more monster episodes - don't make this a nightstalker reboot; focus on the mythology component and massive dynamic. 10. Finally, Noble in every episode. 11. Is the cow gone yet? Get rid of the cow. 12. Now family life with Torv - don't care 13. Much of the equipment looks cheap in an otherwise high production value show (pretty sure those were christmas lights they put on the little watcher's head) 14. Obviously Torv's boss (one of the coolest guys on the Wire) deserves better writing and more to do 15. How about more female one shot villians. Frankly, all of these shows could do with more women. -
twas all.
-
Fringe is good, but i'll be watching NCIS where i can witness the hotness that is Pauley Perette. Anna Torv wishes she had half the personality, looks and tattoos that Pauley has. Gibbs can kick Pacey's butt anyday as well...
-

Scully was a bore...not her fault, but the writing...
by cant_stop_yawning
-
Can't we just get rid of this guy. He adds nothing. Please give him a new assignment.
-
Will do. I'll try to find one that doesn't make me a pedantic bore though.

Someone explain plz.

Hobocode, didn't see"The Happening"I'm waiting for the book
by jah_kingdom
Didn't people jump off roofs in Pulse, too. Didn't see re-make.
-
Anything weird, and creepy, and anything that has the Tesla vibe is just good fodder for the imagination. I love the characters, except for Peter, cause he's always gotta have a remark, and that's so fuckin' annoying.
I like Dunham is great. The first half of the season, I was kinda pissed at her. She was flat. Then she had that spinal tap, and broke out of her contraints with a damn glass. Then proceeded to kick her captors in the head. I believe in the same episode, she shot a bitch in the head. At the end of that ep, I was all a twitter for Dunham. And now that it's been revealed that she was a part of some experiment with Walter, and W. Bell? Color me intrigued. -
I think we are on the CUSP of Fringe catching on in the mainstream...The marketing from beginning to end of this show has been Dark Knight esque
-
And others like him; do you realize that your sort of comments do nothing but make people think "Hmm... rude, stupid, selfish people don't like Fringe?"
Talk about its flaws; that's fine. However, posts like "Show sucks you morons should be cancelled people who watch this r dumb"... don't really touch anybody who has a degree of sanity. Is that really the level of thought that courses through your head? Really? Is it that intellectually barren? Coupled with your evident emotional immaturity, it makes for quite a UN-devastating product. -
That was a great fucking episode. But I wish the 'big secret' had been something a little more out of left field (or that we hadn't already pretty much figured!).
-
So the May 5th episode has Clint Howard telling Olivia he is Spock, the son of Sarek. Makes sense. Clint Howard looks like a fucking lab experiment.
-
Gotta' love that sweet ole' meta-fiction.
I'M more excited about the clip from the preview with Senor Baldy! "Walter...it's time to go." FUUUUCK! -
is what we're calling that guy who transformed in episode 13: "The Transformation". You see him briefly at the start of the show, spines and all (probably meant to be large hairs but damn they looked lethal) transform and about to rampage through a plane. Was surprisingly well done.
-
Except for the faux reveal of William Bell being the funder for ZFT...I mean who didn't see that coming? I, personally, become a bigger fan of Fringe each week. Really looking forward to the last two episodes.
-
I loved the X-Files. I love Fringe. You're like people that listen to classic rock stations and think you're cool, but you're just stunted and irrelevant. Move on.
-
Looked like Billy West (ren and stimpy) and I really thought it was him. Turns out it was Jefferson Mays. Great performance. I thought for sure Billy West had disappeared and studied acting.
-
Good luck
-
Precisely. I've tried watching X-files late night between sham-wow commercials and that is exactly how I feel - like I'm listening to a classic rock station. And I'll take it one step further - life is short and I really don't need to hear stairway to heaven again.
There is something weird about posters like 'Chadley BeBay'- what is the profile for this (I'm assuming) guy? If he was in his mid-teens, it would all make sense. X-Files, however, was a generation ago. There is a disturbing sort of arrested development that surfaces in these talk backs. -
Someone had to say it.
But seriously, if people don't like this show because of personal taste - fine. If people don't like this show because they think it's bad TV - they haven't seen BBC's current Robin Hood. -
Either that, or the female government agent who was experimented on as a child but she doesn't remember (but maybe her sister does) is some sort of archetype. And the mad scientist who is years ahead of his time and created all of these futuristic inventions, but now the gang have to sort of solve his mysterious writings and ramblings to work out where his inventions are, and what they do... is another archetype.
-
When the FUCK did it become policy to runs ads with sound defaulted to ON, AND run it on every cunting page???????????????????
-
Watched the Pilot, it was ok but not great. Pacey was a bit meh and the girl was attractive but also meh. The Steward of Gondor and Daniels were great, of course. So is it worth getting?
-
Ah ha ha! So so true, that's a fucking turd burger of a show. Personally I can't get past the hairstyles and the yob accents. Almost as bad as Torchwood.
-
The character of Walter is the best I have seen on TV in years.
-
Thanks for your replies, guys. I think I agree with ICE_Agent: from what I've seen so far there's zero chemistry between the two leads (pacey and blonde chick).
...oh, and masteryoda: you ARE clearly 12 and "too cool" for the X-Files. Another twelve years from now and you'll be raving about this awesome "classic TV" show you just discovered about two FBI agents called Mulder and Scully. It's so cool because nobody in your peer group seems to know it - which makes you awesome. It's the same as with your daddy's rock music - exactly the same. -
Brilliant.
-
Overall I don't know if I'd call it good, as it seems to be a bit of a mish-mash of shows, styles and stories. But it also seems to be more coherent than Heroes.
Otherwise it has a wonderful character in Dr Bishop (possibly one of my top 5 on TV at the mo), some fun in not only its concepts but also their execution, and a story arc that has great potential - especially since it seems the lead agent character (Dunham) isn't going to be doing the typical investigative drama every week.
Oh, and here's another vote to get rid of those quota wasting full-motion video ads. I don't mind the flash animated banner ads (if you must) but video ads is what commercial TV's for. Keep it off the web. -
Depends on what kind of chemistry you're wanting. I don't think they're meant to be romantic (Olivia just had her lover betray her and get killed, and they seem to be making a thing of Peter and Olivia's sister).
I think they have a rapport. Both have secrets in their past that even they don't know about. Both are freaked by what they're seeing every week. I think they both balance eachother even though they are both kinda unbalanced themselves. In fact the only person who doesn't seem unbalanced in the show is Astrid... It's always the quiet ones... -
nope, you can't hulu it
There are 3 un-huluable eps ahead of it
bummer -
i LOVE the hatred people have for this word
-
I agree - what I was hoping we wouldn't get is a X-Files Mulder/Scully cock-block every week. Will they? Won't they? By season 5 or 6, I didn't give a shit. I *like* that Pete and Olivia are carrying on as professional partners, increasingly good friends with just a tiny hint of something more occasionally from Pacey.
-
please either get rid of herc or get an additional (perhaps younger, smarter, correspondent). his writeups are dim and the programs he chooses to cover are limited. we really need someone who will cover a broader range of programs and dig into projects under consideration.
-
The Cow
Moooooooooooooo -
There is a little chemistry there, but the problem is still Torv. She drains the life out of every scene and this crap with her sister is beyond tiresome.
-
Keeping Torv around because she is "hot" is moronic. Hollywood is full of hot. The relationship between the bishops is what drives the show. If they dump anyone, dump Torv.
-
it shows up on Wednesdays when the episodes air. Been there all fucking season. Now go wipe your pussies and go back to whining about the motorcycles in Terminator.
-
Uh...yeah...ya think? Was this really a surprise to anyone who's been watching the show all season, even casually without their nerd goggles on?
-
"The Variable" will conquer all tonight. Where's the TB?

LOVE Fringe! HATE Herc's constant overuse of "penultimate"
by kaiser soze
Herc, seriously, grab a dictionary, or go to Webster's online, and learn a new word or two. It's become a running joke how much you use that word.
-
tonight's Lost talkback didn't have Herc using "penultimate". Wow, man, you're so cool and intelligent that you learned that word and then used it ad nauseum.
-
You know - this may have been one of the best episodes so far. Liked the pacing (a bit formulaic, but good). Liked the acting all-around. Loved the vamp creature, but COME ON - you INGEST spinal fluids, and then they make their way back to your spine because you don't have enough? WHAT? If I eat a bag of human hair, I'm not going to grow a Kramer on my head. STOOPID. Come on writers - you're better than that.
-
um... whats to talkback about if the event hasn't happened yet?
-
(1) It's a pretty common word, and (2) what should he say instead "next to last"?. It is one less syllable, but on the page it's basically the same amount of characters. Is there a shorter way of writing it? If not, then quit bitching.
-
"Penultimate" has 11 characters. "Second last" has 10 if you don't include the space. ;-)
-
"The second last episode" is kind of awkward. "Next to last" is the shortest non-awkward wording I can think of and that also has 10 characters if you do not count the space, but 12 if you do.
-
Why are you people complaining about chemistry. There is not supposed to be any romantic or sexual tension between them except occasionally from Peter. It's like Mulder and Scully. I think they both work in the context of their characters and people are complaining because it is not what they preconceived versus an objective view of what is on screen.
-
I mean really. I can figure that out if I'm watching the show in question. If I'm not watching the show in question, I don't care. And to hst666, it may be a common word but in all of my days on planet earth, I have never seen anyone use it. Which.. I guess makes it an uncommon word.
-
it would be Anna Torv.
Poor John Noble. From LotR to this. Poor vaugely scary-looking bastard. -
otherwise, FAIL
-
Just stop with the penultimate, antepenultimate and preantepenultimate. You don't sound smart with your 25¢ words. You just come off like a douche. And not a classy douche, but the cheap one you found on the back of the bottom shelf at CVS.
-
I don't know. Maybe it's for the few glimpses of Walter and Peter and a hint at the larger conspiracy (Manifesto anyone) that Walter may or may not have written, maybe it's because I can't wait to see Leonard Nimoy as William Bell, maybe... I don't know because *most* of the screen time is given to the most boring actress on earth. Anna Torv. I don't hate her. I don't like her. I find her too bland to hate or like, she's just there, like a lamp post and you just want her to shut up and get out of the way. Now, I'm not saying get rid of Anna Torv or her character, which I think is actually a fairly important character, but NOT an interesting character. Interesting is Walter. Interesting is what Walter did to Peter and what/who Peter is and what the Bishops overall relationship is to the Observer and everything else going on. Interesting is the manifesto and everyone and everything behind it. The scenes with Anna Torv it in just stagnate.
-
and it's working. Oh, I just realized now that Tricia Helfer isn't busy on BSG anylonger, can Torv have a mental breakdown, get shoved into a psych ward and let Tricia Helfer take over. That lady has more personality in a strand of hair than Torv has in her entire body. And NO, I'm not male and I'm not suggesting Helfer because she's "hot". I'm not a big BSG fan, but I've seen her on that show as well as Burn Notice (Carla) and a guest shot on Chuck and she's very good. I think she and Peter would have some nice sparky chemistry.
-
I don't know why people get so bend out of shape about Anna Torv. Don't think she is the greatest actress by any means, but I actually know a couple FBI agents (one is a woman) and, intentional or not, she pretty much nails their personality. The situations/pressures they deal with everyday make it a necessity to be emotionally cool, even keel, in other words, pretty boring. I always viewed her as the straight man anyway. Walter is so wacky and Peter is so morally ambiguous you need a grounded character. If she really bothers you that much I would go ahead and give up on the show. She's not going anywhere.
-
I have NO idea why the hate for her. Do ALL women on TV have to be quirky, hot and lovable? How many different personalities are there on this planet? Name ANY other agent on that show that has PERSONALITY and you'd be lying. Charlie? Broyles? Please! The cool, calm demeanor IS agent. Monkey - I hear you. The dynamic is this... Olivia the calm and in control. Peter the shoot-from-the-hip wildcard. Walter the comic relief. Then fillers. The woman's good let her run. We have NO IDEA what will happen if that emotionally-unstable room-melting young girl we saw on the tape ever does "lose control", do we?

watch that and if you don't smile a bit, you should give up on this show 'cause you're dead. -
Like i said, I think her character is important, but too bland and boring to be the main character/show focus. Why And Monkey_Tamer, you're probably right I should give up on the show because Anna Torv isn't going anywhere. The problem is, I *like* these types of shows. I really *really* like the freaky conspiracy stuff and Walter is priceless. I just have to sit through 45 minutes of Torv to see 5 minutes of Walter.
-
This show has so much potential (and this was a pretty good episode) but Torv kills it. I really do blame the writers - why does she have to be soooooo boring?
And like I mentioned earlier, let us get over "hot". I didn't even follow the show, but if you want hot, throw Grace Park into the mix - I wouldn't mind a little more diversity on tv anyway.
I've mentioned getting Torv acting lessons, but to honestly, I'd rather they have a "game changer" and just dump her and her boring family. I don't really think there are an army of Torv devotees who would defect is she departed the show suddenly/shockingly. I'd say have Charlie take over for awhile, but I'd prefer the show continue with the female lead - just not Torv.
For the Torv apologists, ask yourselves this question - why, if she is so hot and a passable actress, do so many find her tiresome? Be honest - something about her feels false. I vote dump her and save a what could be a great show. -
Just goes to show, that people shouldn't confuse the actor with the role, yeah? Anna Torv is clearly a witty lass, and up for a laugh. She handled the mind-reading nut bar perfectly.
-
Because it's the type of word Ted Mosby would have used every day in college. Herc is just winding us up by doing it so often, it's amusing now.
-
With your irrational hatreds...
Torv will not be dropped from the show. The show is about her. I think she is doing a perfectly fine job playing an intelligent, highly discliplined professional woman, but even if I hated her acting, I would realize that she was core to the show. The character can't go, and they can't recast. It's like Dushku on Dollhouse. -
If Trov really bothers you and keeps you from enjoying the show don't expect much to change. At least the clip Fish Tank posted shows Trov isn't just playing herself. I hold out hope that the writers know what they are doing and potentially are just setting us up to see Dunham's world of order and control unravel into utter chaos. I do think this show is a "slow burn" (sort of like Lost was before it had an end date). Once we get more into what happened in her childhood maybe the writers will give Trov a little more to work with. Then we can really see if she is a decent actress or not. But, for me anyway, it doesn't really matter. The actress or the character doesn't affect my enjoyment of the show. And unlike most people on here, I'm sort of interested to see how they are going to tie her sister and niece (and maybe brother-in-law) into what's going on.
-
And next weeks looks great. Whens the season one dvd out ?
-
for anyone complaining about olivia being 'boring' - there's a reason for it. remember in last week's episode? the guy who was given the same medication as olivia when they were kids? remember how his emotions would spread to other people? and you notice how olivia is basically emotionless? figure it out.
-
week after week there are people whining about this show. if you think it's a bad show, how do you know unless you watch it? and if you think it's a bad show, why would you keep watching it?
-
What was the song playing in the club when Peter first spots Boone's wife?
-
was it the one with the female vocals? if so, it was 'burning up' by ladytron.
-
By that logic, I guess Heroes is actually supposed to "suck". Golly that Tim Kring is actually actually a GENIUS!
-
I thought it was Ladytron but it also sounded a bit like The Birthday Massacre.
-
i'm not saying she's boring - i'm saying it's part of her character to be bland. it'll all make sense later in the series.
-
You all have no idea how hot she is and she is not in the least bit boring..rather her character isn't boring..she herself is definitely not boring..i love her
-
Could have sworn I saw Abrams in the nightclub crowd scene, just before they captured the chick. Anyone else?
-
I hate this show. I hate everything. Women don't like me.
-
So she's probably descended from serial rapists, in addition to being constipated!
-
The whole "penal colony" thing...
-
I think she's fantastic, shows a lot of restraint but brings a lot of soul to the show. give her a chance. the show is really starting to cook.
-
I said a while ago that the show seemed like a "problem of the week" show, but would get much deeper, and that's what seems to be happening. And if I didn't have a wife, I'd probably be stalking Anna Torv. Thanks for keeping me grounded, Missus!
-
seriously Lost has become a chore to watch these days. The only characters I'm mildly interested in are Faraday and Miles. The main cast have just become fucking nuisances embroiled in constant love triangles. At least Fringe has a hook to keep you watching. Fucking Lost had the nerve to kill off Faraday, not many reasons to watch these days...:/ And there is absolutely no-one as awesome as John Noble on Lost now is there? (sure Anna Torv's blandness cancels it out though i guess).
-
Huh, didn't even know. Still, I try not to watch too much domestic TV, 99% is utter shite.
-
Was talked about her being related to Murdoch, but apparently this was unknown during casting.
She isn't the worst character on TV, but she sounds so bored, my microwave shows more emotion.
John Noble has been outstanding and is an Aussie we can be proud of
-
Dude, please - that doesn't make any sense. That whole emotional plague storyline was thought up on the fly during the extended break - my theory is that they threw it in there to give her a little edge, but it didn't work and it won't going forward. I really think they should dump her. As I said before, the show is really starting to gain momentum - I know because my wife has taken an interest and she hates this genre. You know what she likes? The Bishops, Astrid, Charlie and (sadly) the cow. If you capture the female audience for a show like this, it will stick around, and I really want to see where they go with it. My greatest hope for Fringe (actually, for all shows) is that they set an endpoint, like Lost, and stick to it. Who was it that said, if you intend to die, you can do anything? One thing you could do is dump Torv.
-
a really grounded person with exceptional observational skills

It's a death nell for any story be it a screenplay, teleplay or novel. Take a class on writing and a large portion of it will be on character development because a weak story can be propped up by strong characterization (the opposite can be true too) but don't mistake weak for boring. Right now, as far as I'm concerned, Fringe for me is propped up by EVERYONE except Anna Torv/Olivia. If the show didn't have quirky interesting characters surrounding her, it would be an utter snoozefest for *me*. So this is what bothers me. Being a woman myself, I look for strong leading female characters. My favorite is probably Sydney Bristow (Alias), my current favorite is Renee Walker (24). Besides that there was Dana Scully, Zoe and Kaylie (Firefly), Aeryn Sun (Farscape).. just naming the awesome female characters off the top of my head... Sarah (Chuck), Fiona (Burn Notice). So many out there that I enjoy watching so the fact that I don't like Anna Torv/Olivia is an oddity. I *want* desperately to like her. To look forward to watching her in each scene like I did with Sydney Bristow. I don't need her to be hot, I don't need a pretty face to fantisize over, I need a female lead with whom I can identify and enjoy watching. I just can't go there with Anna Torv and it's a shame. So people are asking why do I keep watching if I find the lead boring? Because fortunately, everything and everyone else on Fringe isn't boring.

First--i agree with whoever said it--the whole penultimate thing is tired, played out, and pretensious. Now, about fringe--I don't find Olivia very interesting, but the show definately compensates with Walter, who is the reason i write the show. The kid from Mighty Ducks (peter) plays off Walter brilliantly, in my opinion. A few weeks back Peter started to realize that Walter's illness impacted Walter more than his family and himself... i loved the line about how he saw the illness as something that happened to him and his mom instead of something that happened to his father, Walter. There was a fleeting moment where it seemed like Peter wanted to go to a show with Walter or something... Walter is such a complex character that you forget that he's a guy who loves his son very much, but knows he failed his son... its really one of the best family related storylines on tv, along with supernatural and recently chuck...dexter too when its on (the season finale was ASTOUNDING. The final reveal at the end opens up so many doors i can't wait to go through). My favorite story on fringe this season was the 70 year old empath kid who we think is going to a safe place until we see another character just like him, except grown up. That episode solidified the decision for me to be a fan... i was ambivalent about it for a while, but i'm on board now.
-
who is the reason i 'watch' the show, not 'write' although me saying that under a different screen name would make Media Messiah think i slipped up and actually am a writer on the show.
-
second mis-typed thing was the fact that i was referring to the season finale of chuck, not dexter, although the exact statement i made in parentheses could easily apply Dexter, too.
-
writers don't write boring characters *on purpose*. However, I think the writers on Fringe have given Olivia all they can to make her interested. In this case, it's not so much the character as the actress. And Wycksmmm, I agree about Peter and Walter. Walter is such a sad person, but his illness keeps the grief at bay. A very excellent and complex character.

"Another revelation was that Fox wanted to plant The Observer at the Obama inauguration but couldn’t quite work it out."
Let's see, they can get Tom Hanks to interact with JFK using technology that is now 15 years old, but they can't digitally insert The Observer right behind Obama while he's giving his Inaugural Address? -
They want to put the Observer into actual real life situations, like when he was in the audience of American Idol.
As you say, anyone can digitally insert him into footage and use it in the show. It's a whole other moment of freakyness when you're watching something live and unrelated to Fringe, and up pops his little bald head. -

Maybe it's just that nobody wanted the fascists at Fox

To turn the Obama inauguration into a joke.
