Varese Sarabande & AICN Want To Give You One Of Ten Copies Of Giacchino's STAR TREK Score!! + In L.A.? Meet The Composer May 5!!
Merrick here...

The good people over at Varese Sarabande (website here HERE) have something special for AICN readers.
By following the guidelines specified below, you could obtain ONE of TEN soundtrack CDs of Michael Giacchino's score for the new STAR TREK movie - set aside for AICN by Varese.
Also, to commemorate where TREK has been as well as where it is going, Varese has included TEN copies of Jerry Goldsmith's STAR TREK NEMESIS score CD. These are being awarded as a set - meaning ten recipients will receive Giacchino's new STAR TREK score AND Goldsmith's NEMESIS score...together.
I'd originally wanted to have a lot of fun coming up with cool "themes" for this contest (i.e. "Recast any STAR TREK character with the most inappropriate actor possible", etc.) - but due to the sheer volume of entries we're likely to receive, I've decided to make this giveaway pretty cut & dry.
Here's how it works:
** Sometime between the time you read this and 11:59 PM CST USA On Friday May 1, you can send me e-mails via the link below.
** Include your name and mailing address in this e-mail. The address is to expedite prize shipment only and will be summarily discarded once book recipients are chosen. No spam, no mailing lists, etc.
** ONLY TWO ENTRIES PER DAY ARE ALLOWED. This will be confirmed. Anything past the first two entries from an applicant will be discarded.
** GIVEAWAY OPEN TO U.S. READERS ONLY.
** Be sure to send your entry from an ACTIVE (and frequently checked) E-MAIL ACCOUNT. If I try to reach you & my message bounces back? I'll trash your win and move on to the first contestant I can reach.
** I've already (randomly) pre-selected TWO times of day over the next 5 days. The person who e-mails me at (or closest to) these times will receive a copy Giacchino's score and NEMESIS. Yes, I've compensated for/factored in this article being posted later in the day today (Monday April 27).
** The 10 recipients will be notified VIA FOLLOW-UP POSTING ON AICN the morning of Monday May 4.
** Varese will have your addresses in hand the morning of Monday May 4 & they've been kind enough to handle fulfillment in this contest.
And that's it.

SCOTTY!!
-
Can't wait...
-
Then go to eat a POLI-BACON CHILI CHEESEBURGER at PINKS down the street afterwards.
-
Darn!! US readers only......it's time for an international AICN;)
-
...one grilled Polish dog on a hamburger bun with bacon lettuce, tomatoes and mayo (add one burger & one slice of cheese - $2.10 extra)
-
AAAAAAAAAAH. BYW, I met him already. He's a cool dude.
-
heh, looks like PINKS own menu dosn't describe the glory in depth. It's a Polish dog ON a hamburger with strips of bacon, COVERED in chili, and some lettuce, tomatoes and mayo. Heart attack in a bun. I also like the "Lord of the Rings" dog. A hotdog inserted into some onion rings, covered in Natcho cheese.
OK, if you can't tell, im getting hungry. -
Movie sucked.
-
Ahhh sweeet!!! Wow a chance to see him in person and get a soundtrack signed! This is going to be so cooooool!!!!
-
Seriously... I want more from Star Trek.
-
...and its bland video game crap, just like the rest of this movie. The only track that really stood out was "Nero Sighted", and even then only for 40 seconds. It was made even more painful when immediately afterward I listened to Jerry Goldsmith's main theme from TMP. GODDAMNIT! Fucking 2000's, can't even get Star Trek scores right. Jesus, this decade fucking sucks.
-
Very generic and bland.
-
just kidding
-
I've listened to it and the new theme is really good, very nuanced. The end credits are a wonderful update of the original series' theme, mixed with the new themes. Very impressed.
-
We hate region-locked DVDs, why region-lock your contests?
Mailing a CD over water isn't THAT much more expensive.
*sigh* -
This sucks, the days of the internet being an international concern are over.
-
Joker theme was good but I can't remember anything else.

This may be open to the US only, but that doesn't mean International readers are left out... I think having Hayden Christensen as any Star Trek character would be as inappropriate as it gets.
As for whining about Mr Giacchino's score... I thought this was a pro-Giacchino site. What, not enough themes for ya? "Hummable" tunes? It's just average-video-game-mood-music-sounds-like-everybody-else-I-like-his-old-stuff-better-than-his-new-stuff-and--is-better...
No pleasing some people. -
-and-- is-better...
-
He just doesn't come up with as brilliant a theme as Courage, Goldsmith, and Horner. And repeats his lame one over and over. Too bad, I loved his Incredibles score.
-
Sadly, I think I agree. Granted, I've not heard the entire soundtrack, but I did hear the end titles music. And in just about all symphonic end title music, the major themes are reprised. We get the original series theme three times, intercut with other music from the film. And none of it stands out, aside from "Enterprising Young Man" (it's in some of the earlier trailers I think), it's all just filler. What frustrates me the most is the original series theme. I was hoping for a rich orchestral arrangement. What I got was three forty-five second long micro-variations. Yes, it sounds beautiful. But by the time I start to enjoy it, it's over and into this other theme. I know there's not a lot of variation to the theme, but there isn't much variation to the James Bond theme, and they always get to use that for about two to three minutes before segueing into other film music. I'm curious to see how the rest of the score stands up, though now I'm no longer as excited as I was to get my hands on that CD and devour it.
-
Seriously, wait to pass judgment until you hear the entire thing. It will get under your skin and really hits the emotions. "Labor of Love" is absolutely sublime. The variations of Kirk's theme build and build, and by the time you hear "That New Car Smell", you'll love it as much as Horner's theme. When you hear the last few seconds of "Nero Death Experience", there's practically an easter egg there. Highlights are definitely "Labor of Love", "Nice to Meld You" which is so reminiscient at times of classic TOS music by Courage and Steiner, and "Enterprising Young Men" is just brilliant. The way the first 30 seconds builds into Kirk's theme is so triumphant. And "Nero Sighted" is such the tribute to TWOK that if you can't hear that, I don't think you're listening. The "End Credits" is okay, but just about the weakest track. It may have been a mistake to shovel the old theme in, but there it is. This is not Giacchino's "Star Wars" breakout as that was for Wiliams, but he's sooo close. I think if you put his Trek score in with what he did with Lost, Cloverfield, Incredibles and so on, you'll hear that he is truly on the verge of being the most versatile, powerful film composer we've had for a long time. No, it's not TMP because he's not Goldsmith. Not yet. But I would easily place this up there with TMP, TWOK and TUC as my favorite Trek scores. Just sayin'
-
any word on if he will only be siging the cd? I would love to bring my one sheet and get that signed as well.
-
The score he wrote for Nemisis was an excellent score,as were all of his trek scores.
-
There's a piece of music in that Nemesis score that moves me to tears when I hear it. I can't find it in the film anywhere. It's the theme that's sandwiched between the "Star Trek" march he wrote for "The Motion Picture" in the end credits. It starts off very subtle and understated, the builds up some symphonic steam and repeats this shift from subtle to swelling until it explodes, then falls back into that simple, understated part. Beautiful music, and this isn't even the same end titles track they used in the movie.
-
I have a feeling they left the best stuff of the album IMHO. It never seems to hit its stride like "F*** YEAAA"
Like the outstanding music from this scene (Space jump)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uR9faFHGqg
its not even on the album, and its great.. -
Goldsmith didn't bother with a main theme. There is a new theme of sorts on it, but it isn't suite material. Even the Insurrection score is superior.
-
On the whole, the Nemesis score wasn't Jerry's finest. I just like that piece of music that is used in the middle of the End Titles track used on the CD (that's not in the film).
-
but, his son did most of the music on it.
-
FIRST CONTACT is a great score, but is it that much better than his FINAL FRONTIER? TMP establishes the movie (and TNG) STAR TREK theme. And it completely sustains several scenes in the movie. It's actually one of the greatest film scores period (top 50 of all-time).
-
you can get it on the bootleg nemesis soundtrack..I found it on Imeem.com
-
plodding dull soundtrack like the movie, I can't believe anyone putting it on their top ANYTHING??????
-
just great stuff.
-
That Kirk motif is used every ten seconds, it seems. It leans waaaaay too heavily on that theme throughout. And from an orchestral standpoint, it's really heavy-handed-- lots of noise (the anti-TMP score, really).Otherwise, the music is okay- I wouldn't rank it above Goldsmith or Horner's stuff at all. Cliff Eidelman's score for VI beats this one too. But Giacchino definitely has Dennis McCarthy's GENERATIONS beat (like that was fucking hard).
Best track "Enterprising Young Men." This score reminds me a lot of Jablonksy's TRANSFORMERS- which, like most current film scores, mixes traditional instrumentals with the use of choral arrangements and that universal "Middle-Eastern" wailing voice, you know the one. I would give it a 6/10. -
Best original track is "Enterprising Young Men." The best overall track is the "End Credits" for its use of the Alexander Courage theme.
-
Over and over again. The Kirk theme will become catchy because it's repeated constantly. I need to listen to some Snoop to cleanse my ears.
-
about 50 seconds into "Nero Fiddles, Narada Burns", the Gondor theme starts blaring shamelessly. Not a facsimile either, but the actual Gondor theme. Giacchino, you clueless clump!
-
Did Giacchino watch "Nailin' Palin" before he sat down to write these?
-
Thought the winners were supposed to be announced this morning?
-
Where the winners names at?
-
Right?
