Warner Bros. to set sail with ODYSSEUS, wouldn't it be cool if it starred Sean Bean?

Published at:  Apr 27, 2009 2:53:52 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Our friends at Variety alert us to the fact that apparently Warner Bros is going to be giving us yet another journey back in time with the Greeks, this time following the story of ODYSSEUS, whose journeys became the basis for Homer's ODYSSEY.

This project was kicked off with a spec script by Ann Peacock's script. She was one of those responsible for THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE. The script found its way to Gianni Nunnari, the producer on 300 - and they've employed Jonathan Liebesman, the man behind the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING.

Personally - a high quality straight ODYSSEUS movie would be fantastic if done right. Even when radically reworked it can be fantastic as the Coens showed us with O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? I'd be very curious to see what Peacock has done with Odysseus' life. As it is, it seems that this film is a bit in the future as its director is still working on BATTLE: LOS ANGELES for Columbia. Unless ODYSSEUS shoots first. Let's see how this plays out.

He was good as Gotti too, even looks like the guy. The Odyssey for TV was great, especially since it left in the gods and mythical creatures - something Troy failed to do, although Brian Cox was pretty good chewing scenery.

I second (or third) the kudos for THE ODYSSEY tv movie.
They had the long running time to do the story justice. Decent effects (for a TV movie at least). It didn't skimp on the gore or action. AND it featured Eric Roberts as a lecherous suitor trying to move in on Odysseus's wife. An enjoyable watch.

I know TROY was hardly a classic but TROY DIRECTOR'S CUT is actually a fair improvement.
If you halfway enjoyed the theatrical cut then i'd say it's worth a look. It adds a fair bit of extra gore and violence to the battle scenes, a little more nudity too, and also fleshes out a couple of the characters better.

What I'd really like to see is a Gilgamesh movie. It may be the oldest story in the world, but it still reads pretty cool today, especially in the sex scene department; we're a bunch of prudish Limeys compared to how horny and openly sexual we were back then.

And I did a little cameo in that TV version of the Odyssey with Greta Scacchi- they covered my pale ass in oil to make me look Greek, and I did a couple of scenes juggling. I reckon I got a good 50 seconds screen time.

    by youngdog

..but I don't think he is right for Odysseus. Sean Bean seems to shine when playing characters that are very believable and with very human weaknesses. But Odysseus is a greek hero - he is larger than life! He is immensely gifted but arrogant and through his many trials and setbacks over the years he learns humility and becomes a whole and wise person - truly fit to be a king.Sort of like Morrissey but with sandals. And a boat. The boat is important.

    Best version of the Odysseus

    by continentalop

The Warriors. I know everyone says it is based on Anabasis, and you can see the influence of that on the novel. But the movie is pure Odyssey.
Just change the Turnbull AC’s into the cyclops; the Lizzies are the Sirens; the female cop on the bench played by Mercedes Reuhl is Circe (one turns you into a pig; the other summons and has you arrested by “pigs”); the journey throug the subway tunnel is the journey through the Underworld; the Punks are Scylla; and the fight with the Rgoues is the counterpart ot the battle with the suitors in Ithaca. Plus you can add Odysseus’ rivalry with Ajax in the Illiad with Swan’s rivalry with Ajax in the Warriors and you got another connection between the Warriors and Odysseus.

Warriors: Group of Warriors far from home have to travel back home and face a bunch of difficulties after angering the gods. Odesseus: Group of greek warriors are far from home and have to travel back to Greec

    by rbatty024

The scene with the suitors is one of the greatest scenes of ultra-violence ever featured in canonical literature. Great stuff. I would love to see a straight forward reworking.

I also agree with everyone who says Oh Brother should not be considered an adaptation, more like a running gag. There are pieces of the epic that the Coens heard of and then pieced together. Still a great film, though.

    by hardboiled wonderland

Oh, Sean Bean. Harry, have you been reading my secret diary? I said to a friend after we saw Troy (part great, part bad) that I'd love to see Sean Bean play Odysseus in a film adaptation of the Odyssey. He was perfect for the part in Troy, that perfect mix of hero and trickster. "I may be the last to arrive, but I'll always be here at the end", followed by Bean's trademark roguish grin captured Odysseus perfectly.

The problems with that film do not fall with the script. The problem is the director chose to make a world that looked too shiny and too clean, as if no one actually lived in Narnia. There are even more problems with the sequel. However, I will give the script credit for keeping the story based in WWII England.

    by rbatty024

is that it will associate this film with Troy, which was an utter disappointment. My hope is that they do not try and take magic out of this film like they did with similar fantasy epics. Hollywood is obsessed with telling the "real" story when the mythical tells us more than the "historical."

EQUILIBRIUM does not exist in this dojo

    by cobra--kai

EQUILIBRIUM is a film entirely about professionalism.
    Bale's professionalism.
At the start of the film he is actually TOO professional.
He needs to gain Equilibrium by becoming slightly more amateur (hence the title).
Only after letting his 'inner amateur' out he is ready to become a 'true professional'.
This he achieves at the end of the film. Becoming so utterly professional that instead of having a five minute duel with his rival he kills him with a single stroke.
Never has one film, nor one actor been more devoted to professionalism.
    Praise Bale.

    Odysseus.. Awesome

    by brigon

Omg I am so excited about this.

As a child my dad would tell me the story of the cyclops Polythermus (sp) who Odysseus blinded on his way home from Troy, when I became 12 I got The Odyssey out from the library (the edited version which is easier to read) and it became my favourite novel. So many cool adventures.
When I started University at 21, I found a copy of the Odyssey and the Iliad in the library and read the full novel for the first time.

Now I am 28 I bought both novels from a book shop just four weeks ago, and now this movie has been announced.
It's almost as if my whole life has been building towards the movie's release date! I pray to Zeus that it doesn't suck.

The mini series ruled all! But then I'll always prefer a mini series adaptation to a movie adaptation. It may not have the budget, but it has the time to tell the story right.

What a great day for the bean!

    by darrylstrawberry

I agree, i think he would be perfect. The Lord of the Rings were my favorite books as a child and now as an adult. I enjoyed PJ's rendition of the films, although like most of us there were areas were PJ missed the mark. Why didn't Gandalf's sword glow?! Anyways, i digress. Bean's performance of Boromir blew me away, especially his death scene! It was was of the few instances where the film surpassed the writings of Tolkien. I would gladly pay $20 to see a big budget film where Sean can finally flex his leading muscles!

    Sean Bean is the man..

    by joker gordon levitt

He was one of the best things about Troy. A big screen Odysseus would own all, as long as the following people don't direct:In no particular orderSteven Sommers

It would indeed be cool if it starred Sean Bean. The director's cut of Troy was pretty good.

    Brigon, they're not novels

    by lyleblake82000

THE ILIAD and THE ODYSSEY are epic poems attributed to the legendary blind Greek poet Homer, about whom we know almost nothing. If you got hold of versions that looked like novels to you, they were prose retellings of the storyline, not the real thing. Both are indeed great stories, but the real thing is also chock full of great poetry (depending on whose translation you're reading)

Troy: Director's Cut was actually really good.

    by themarinebiologist

You know why? It added more scenes with Sean Bean as Odysseus.

THAT is why bringing Sean Bean back to be Odysseus is a great idea.

    by lemming

He really is lower than b-list now. Here in the UK he does the voice over for no less than three ads. One of them is a Supermarket. He's not leading-man material and plays the same freaking character in everything: over-emote man.

I have no idea why anyone would want to see this movie be made. It will be bad and nothing will change my opinion on the subject. I really hope Hollywood crumbles to the ground and at which point REAL FILMMAKERS can take over.

I think you told me that you didnt give a fuck what I had to say because it had been stated a thousand times before. Also you said you're main reason for being here was pointing out how hypocritical people are, so i hope you can see how hypocritical you've know managed to become in maybe 3 weeks time. And also I think a better choice for Odysseus would be Mr Bean.

...buried in TROY'S runtime. Yeah, I know the tempation to show EVERYTHING concerning the invasion of Troy. In Peterson's highly flawed, and surprisingly dull, movie there was a great story, with some well choreographed fight scenes, buried there about the conflict between Hector and Achilles.

    a probably better one.
There's been a script with the same premise for some years now, that gained the interest of several name people, like David Cronemberg, Stephen Frears and Denzel Washington. But Nunnari still glows of the success of 300, so it must have been easy for him to sell the project with a lesser director atached.
