Thank You For Being A Friend Bea Arthur

Published at:  Apr 27, 2009 12:58:45 AM CDT

Hey folks. Quint here. I apologize for being half a day late with this post, but in all honesty I was hoping another editor with a broader knowledge of Bea Arthur's career would step in and tribute the woman who died this morning after a long battle with Cancer. She was 86.

My memories (all fond) of Bea Arthur all revolve around The Golden Girls, which was a staple in my home growing up. We lost Estelle Getty recently, too. Their chemistry together was the glue that held that show together. It was Dorothy's relationship with "Maaaaaaa" (aka Sophia), the sarcastic, biting, but loving mother/daughter bond, that kept the show alive in my view. Betty White and Rue McClanahan were fantastic and the old friends angle was a massive part of the success of the show as well, but the heart was always with Dorothy and Sophia.

I know that Bea had a raunchy side to her as well. Anybody who has seen any of her Roast appearances will know what I'm talking about, but that, I think, only fed into what made her work onscreen.

My mother was a huge fan of ALL IN THE FAMILY and the spin-off starring Bea Arthur called MAUDE. I'm sorry to say that I'm not familiar with Maude at all and only slightly with ALL IN THE FAMILY. I have tracked down some clips from MAUDE and Arthur was on fire, so I'm now going to seek out the series and put it on my "to watch" pile.

I did love her in her more recent appearance as Larry David's mother on CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Even into her 80s she still had it.

Bea Arthur had a unique voice, in more ways than one, and will always be remembered. Who else can claim to have danced with Greedo?

My thoughts will be with Bea's friends, family and fans. Thank you for being a friend.

As a teen, a lame Saturday night always ended with Saturday Night Live - and always started with Golden Girls. They can't all be party weekends, and watching Arthur and Getty's sharp bitchy banter made the weaker of weekends still entertaining (and the adverage G.G. show was still funnier than 3/4s of the SNL skits). RIP.

    by rebeck2

Was priceless. She could do more with just holding a stare than anyone since Jack Benny. I loved her even more on GG than on Maude because she was savagely funny but also very vulnerable at the same time. She and Getty were a comedy team made in Heaven. And, well, now they're back together. She was a wonderful show biz "broad" who once said: "I've done everything but rodeo and porn". LOL. RIP.

    by the_patriot

The Golden Girls was a favorite of my grandmother and mom when I was growing up - and it made me laugh then. Now catching it in reruns that I'm older, I truly appreciate how much funnier it is - and how subtly raunchy it could be even when it was being blatant. A woman of intelligence and talent who could make you laugh with the most straight line or the slightest glance. She was another beacon of comedy that many "comedians" today could do well to study. Thanks for bringing a smile to so many faces - there's never enough of that these days - and I hope you do the same to the crowds in the afterlife.

Her character's explosive, righteous rage, yet obvious tender heart and crackling wit was inspiring, even to me as a young child who didn't quite get all of the adult references on the show. It's Very dated yes but it is a fine fine show. Very topical humour. She was great. It's a bit like watching repeats of Kojak on Hulu.com--it's really a 70's product but well worth your time too-costarring Stallone, James Woods, Winchester on Mash and Ponch from CHips. A riot. Anyways-back to Bea. I remember seeing her on an episode of Star Trek, and she plays this really tall alien side character, kept on seeing her in the background and it was someone else who took one look at her and said-hey that's MAUDE! and yuppers, that was her! pretty hard to miss. Who else can claim to have danced with Greedo?

    by super moo

Bea never claimed this. She considered it nothing more than a role she was hired for related to a movie she was unfamiliar with.

Also, it wasn't fucking Greedo she danced with. She called him by a name that sounded something like "Bledlow". But I understand your thinking Quint. His kind all look alike, so why not just call him Greedo.... lol!

It's really aged greatly as I watch re-runs now. The cast was perfect, and it was so well-written and genuinely funny. Bea Arthur was just fantastic in it. She was also great in "Maude". That show was so cutting-edge in the 70's and it doesn't get the credit it deserves. I can't believe some of the stuff that was on that show.

80s, as in hers, is just that. 80s, a pluralization without posession. '80s denotes 1980s, 1880s, etc. The apostrophe denotes the omitted 19 or 18. Then there's the example 6's. On "Battlestar Galactica", 6's dress was red. 7's silver uniform titillated "Star Trek" fans.

RE:barely familiar with All in the Family???

    by mtoppi1975

PALADIN_68: I heartily agree. I'll give him that he mightn't have been that familiar with Maude - I don't personally know it to rerun as often as All In The Family so, unless he went out and watched the DVDs, his exposure would have been limited. But AITF was the backbone of an entire decade of television, continues to re-run frequently, and any professional television reviewer or journalist worth his salt would know AITF as well as he would know Seinfeld, Friends, I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc...

But, let's face it: AICN is not a journalisticly professional site - and that's why many people like it, because its a site run by geeks for geeks. But, to its own effect, AICN is taken seriously by the film and television community for its large fan base.

Maybe its time the AICN staff starts to take their site more seriously and, at least, hire an editor.

Bea Arthur could barely contain her sexuality on television.

    by leafar the lost

How many young men over the years have lusted for Bea Arthur? There were too many to count. Her work in "Maude", "Laugh-In", "The Star Wars Holiday Special," and "The Golden Girls," made the hearts of men race for generations.
What was it about her that made men go wild whenever she appeared on TV? Was it just her body? No, I think it was something inside her. Whenever she was on TV I felt a sexual energy inside of her that was ready to explode at any moment. Her lust was like electricity all over her "golden" body.Watching Bea Arthur was like watching pornography, but without the nudity and sex. Men, and some women, all over the world will miss her. Her passing is a void that cannot be filled.

I'm a bit taken aback by this, too. Unless Quint is like 15 years old, I can't imagine not being familiar with probably the most influential and important sitcom in the history of television. You do know that Rob Reiner had a career before Spinal Tap, right? And before those 'feed the children,' Gloria used to be hot? btw, speaking of the 70s, was Bea Arthur ever on the Muppet Show? I know Jean Stapleton was and was brilliant. Anyway, rest in peace, Bea. You were a consummate goddess.

I remember being what's now called a tween in the mid-70's and watching Maude. Besides the kick-ass Donny Hathaway singing and Ms. Barbeau as the daughter-- Bea Arthur as Maude was awesome. She was funny, opinionated and powerful. at Adrienne Barbeau's tighter and tighter wardrobe choices, I enjoyed the comedic perfromance of the late Bea Arthur as Maude (and Bill Macy of course). by zodnotgod

To her and the show's credit, "Golden Girls" had no right being as funny as it was/is. Like someone else said, it was not made for me, a punk kid of 13 at the time it aired, but it roped me in because of the great characters and damn funny one-liners. Dot's best line "...to the inseam, Rose!"
And seriously to have so-called pros on here that make their living writing about this shit to actually admit having not seen or heard of "Maude" and "All in the Family" is laughable, sad and unacceptable.

....they named the letter after her." I forgot who said that, it was in a comedy central roast of someone (not Bea). But Bea was the bomb, prolly why Golden Palace didn't make it (featuring an up and coming Don Cheadle if I'm not mistaken) since she wasn't in it. God rest your soul, Bea.

    My Bea Arthur Story

    by smackfu

I was taking a dump at work once, and there were a few other people in the bathroom at the time. Sitting there reflecting, I suddenly remembered an old Bea Arthur joke: 'What's the difference between Bea Arthur and an old shoe? You could eat an old shoe if you had to...' I burst out laughing in the stall. I can only imagine what my co-workers thought.

    We Will MIss You Bea....

Another one of the greats. Check out her first appearances on "All in the Family". One of the few whom could hold their own with Carrol O Connor. Talented funny and a total professional. Rest In Peace Bea you are missed.
