Thank You For Being A Friend Bea Arthur

Hey folks. Quint here. I apologize for being half a day late with this post, but in all honesty I was hoping another editor with a broader knowledge of Bea Arthur's career would step in and tribute the woman who died this morning after a long battle with Cancer. She was 86.
My memories (all fond) of Bea Arthur all revolve around The Golden Girls, which was a staple in my home growing up. We lost Estelle Getty recently, too. Their chemistry together was the glue that held that show together. It was Dorothy's relationship with "Maaaaaaa" (aka Sophia), the sarcastic, biting, but loving mother/daughter bond, that kept the show alive in my view. Betty White and Rue McClanahan were fantastic and the old friends angle was a massive part of the success of the show as well, but the heart was always with Dorothy and Sophia.
I know that Bea had a raunchy side to her as well. Anybody who has seen any of her Roast appearances will know what I'm talking about, but that, I think, only fed into what made her work onscreen.
My mother was a huge fan of ALL IN THE FAMILY and the spin-off starring Bea Arthur called MAUDE. I'm sorry to say that I'm not familiar with Maude at all and only slightly with ALL IN THE FAMILY. I have tracked down some clips from MAUDE and Arthur was on fire, so I'm now going to seek out the series and put it on my "to watch" pile.
I did love her in her more recent appearance as Larry David's mother on CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Even into her 80s she still had it.

Bea Arthur had a unique voice, in more ways than one, and will always be remembered. Who else can claim to have danced with Greedo?
My thoughts will be with Bea's friends, family and fans. Thank you for being a friend.

Not many actors like that left. RIP Bea.
-
We get that fucking amateur cock tease ScriptGirl shoved up our asses but it took hours of people talking about Bea on every other talkback before you guys put anything about this fine actress up...way to go.
-
loved your work

please edit that.

It's bad enough she's died, let's not make things worse...

Bea was one classy dame. She shall be missed.
-
Couldn't believe how adult and controversial Maude was when I was a kid.
-
Bea was ballsy and brilliant! She touched topics like abortion when the network was squirming. But most of all she was funny and warm and amazing. Much love to her and her family. Brave and brilliant. That's MY Bea Arthur.
-
I'd still fuck her.
-
special. And Harvey Korman was too. Who will die next?
-
Bea was a great lady with excellent comic timing and was involved with shows that tackled issues that the majority of network shows avoided. Ballsy, classy and funny. A true professional. They Don;t make them like Bea anymore.
-
That was a very well written memorial piece. She was a class act and will be missed!
-
and a tremendous actress. Few actors possess the combination of strong presence and comic timing that Ms. Arthur did. She is truly great. I will forever love her moments with Carroll O'Connor on "All in the Family." Two master performers creating great television moments. Rest well, Ms. Arthur.
-
You will be missed. Quin the Eskimo...FAIL!
-
"Occupation?"
"Stand up philosopher."
"A what?"
"Stand up philosopher."
"Oh, a bullshit artist!"
R.I.P -
As a teen, a lame Saturday night always ended with Saturday Night Live - and always started with Golden Girls. They can't all be party weekends, and watching Arthur and Getty's sharp bitchy banter made the weaker of weekends still entertaining (and the adverage G.G. show was still funnier than 3/4s of the SNL skits). RIP.
-
and an icon in the gay community. A couple of my gay friends made sure to go out and party her life tonight.
-
And that she made me laugh, a lot, is more than enough to say RIP. A class lady.
-
That woman could take charge and kick anyone's ass! Even Archie Bunker was no match. I grew up watching Maude reruns and she was a flame that could not be contained. But still held it all together. I also watched Golden Girls and she was still the glue that held everything together. You didn't fuck with Bea Arthur. Rest in Peace you wonderful woman!

I apologize. She was to Golden Girls what Seinfeld was to Seinfeld.

BEA ARTHUR -- PLEASE TAKE SCRIPT GIRL WITH YOU!!!
by dannyglovers_dickblood

Was priceless. She could do more with just holding a stare than anyone since Jack Benny. I loved her even more on GG than on Maude because she was savagely funny but also very vulnerable at the same time. She and Getty were a comedy team made in Heaven. And, well, now they're back together. She was a wonderful show biz "broad" who once said: "I've done everything but rodeo and porn". LOL. RIP.
-
The Golden Girls was a favorite of my grandmother and mom when I was growing up - and it made me laugh then. Now catching it in reruns that I'm older, I truly appreciate how much funnier it is - and how subtly raunchy it could be even when it was being blatant. A woman of intelligence and talent who could make you laugh with the most straight line or the slightest glance. She was another beacon of comedy that many "comedians" today could do well to study. Thanks for bringing a smile to so many faces - there's never enough of that these days - and I hope you do the same to the crowds in the afterlife.
-
But I was four. I know I sound disrespectful but that is my first memory of Bea. Since then I have known her on stage, film, and TV, and everything she touched I loved. She was an awesome presence and her passing is awful news. I hope she is remembered.

a reminder they don't do series like "The Golden Girls" anymore, one of the most perfect castings and timings in TV history. You never could tell which of the 4 lead actresses was the best.
-
Legend in her own time. Peace to her, and condolences to her family and friends.
-
Hey, I didn't see you'd posted the same thing! Her character's explosive, righteous rage, yet obvious tender heart and crackling wit was inspiring, even to me as a young child who didn't quite get all of the adult references on the show. I hope this means they'll get the rest of the show out on disc.
-
...fuck Andy Dick's pussy with Bea Arthur's dick! She was always a great sport at the Friar's club roasts. She will be missed... L'CHAIM!
-
For shame.
-
Definitely one of the best comedic actresses ever. Also my favorite golden girl. I know I'll miss her.
-
The best fembot-living-in-a-manbot's-manputer's-world ever. RIP.
-
episode of Golden Girls and not laugh out loud.(I still say Betty White is the funniest woman EVER) It was never entertainment that was targeted at me, but it was on in my house growing up and every time I gave it a minute, I'd get stuck watching it, in spite of my being "too cool and too young"(yeah right) to be a fan.
We'll miss you, Bea. I'm sure you're out there in the universe right now making Archie look like an idiot and making Edith deeply uncomfortable. -

"Forgettaboutit Joe, you're never gonna make it!" I know it wasn't her.....but it shoulda been.
-
...it's sad to see such an old pro go, but she had a pretty good innings at 86. OK, there are some who remember her for her appearance in the Star Wars Holiday Special, but she did her damnest to make such duff material work. Obviously, she will be most remembered for The Golden Girls, but one of the funniest things she ever did was an episode of Malcolm in the Middle. God speed, Ms A!
-
A genuine star. RIP.
-
But this has to be one of the best obits I've ever read for anyone, and I'm sure she'd appreciate it: http://somalipirate.livejournal.com/5686.html

Wow, another fond, childhood memory fades into the "great here-after"... Duz anyone else remember Monday night TV back in the 1970's?
-
I laughed a lot with my parents watching Golden Girls back then. Thank you.
-
First in Maude as a little kid (even though my parents wouldn't let me watch), then in Golden Girls when they WOULD let me watch. You'll be missed! And please forgive AICN's rudeness in not acknowledging your passing until now. They were too busy trying to get ScriptGirl up and running. :P
-
You write for a web site that covers television yet are only slightly familiar with All In The family. Holy shit!
-
Thank you for being the horny old woman on Golden Girls....FTW!!
-
Great episode where she babysits Dewey, and dance the tango together to ABBA's Fernando. RIP Bea. A class act!
-
For all the Bea Arthur jokes we've all told all our lives; God bless.
-
I don't believe it was cancer that killed Bea. The government is trying to cover up just how bad the Swine Flu really. When the a government official goes on TV to tell the public not to panic, then it's time to panic...
-
"Oh, a bullshit artist!"
-
im a huge star trek fan and just found out recently she was in the original star trek episode. 'The Gamesters of Triskelion'
She was Chekov's drill thrall..but back then she went by her real name 'Jane Ross' how cool is that ? she was in star trek and star wars..and even in those terrible roles, she was great -
If you ever get the chance, catch the "All in the Family" episodes. Hilarious and ground breaking. Remember that what she said and did was 40 years ago. No one ever heard a woman stand up to a guy like that. The fact that O'Conner shared the screen with her like that was also remarkable. Very funny stuff.
-
A show about 4 old ladies, that makes you even laugh your ass off 20 years later? They did obviously something right. R.I.P.
-
Damn, you beat me too it. Don't forget the football helmet full of cottage cheese. And, we'll be seeing thelordofhell soon.
-
It's Very dated yes but it is a fine fine show. Very topical humour. She was great. It's a bit like watching repeats of Kojak on Hulu.com--it's really a 70's product but well worth your time too-costarring Stallone, James Woods, Winchester on Mash and Ponch from CHips. A riot. Anyways-back to Bea. I remember seeing her on an episode of Star Trek, and she plays this really tall alien side character, kept on seeing her in the background and it was someone else who took one look at her and said-hey that's MAUDE! and yuppers, that was her! pretty hard to miss. We'll miss Her, though, no doubt.
-
...was there anyone else who could say they've been in both Star Trek AND Star Wars?
...Golden Girls was one of the few shows my Mom and I could agree on. You'll be missed, Bea. RIP -
Don't forget Futurama (she was the Femputer) and Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry's Mother). A classy lady all around.
-
She was so funny and had my respect.
-
of her from the Holiday Special. With morose cantina singing action.

the dead will walk the earth. Just saying. Thank you for being a friend.

I think someone did a mockup of one of those for Star Wars Insider. It was a special "Star Wars Unleashed" gag series, along with Aunt Beru (with blue milk accessory!)
-
There's an actual "Jane Ross" credited on IMDB, and more importantly Arthur's IMDB entry doesn't list her as acting under that name. I saw the clip and she sure as hell sounded like Arthur, however.

Finally, the Maude theme song kicked the Golden Girls theme's as
by wookie1972
"Then There's Maude!"

...with my mom on Lifetime when they'd do a daily doubleshot. That show, and that cast was so perfect, the chemistry so good, a show where four old broads would be sitting around a kitchen table eating cheesecake in their nightgowns, something that shouldn't appeal to a teenage boy, did. I grew up with those ladies, that table and the conversations that took place around it. This is almost like one of the original Trek actors passing in a way for me. She will be remembered, and she will be missed greatly. We're down to two folks. :'(
-
Was funny as hell (Well this one time in Saint Olaf!).
Bea was the glue that held the show together. Once she left the concept was changed to the Golden Palace and stunk. If Betty White and Rue left the show you would have put another couple of charaters with Bea and Estelle and still have a show. -
Absolutely amazing talent.
-
...she said she wishes the fat fuck Knowles would hurry up and throw a seven, so that she can get my good cock action 24/7!
-
to Lifetime. If it weren't for Golden Girls that channel would have gone bankrupt. RIP.
-
To do a show in the 70s with references and stories about pornography, abortion, homosexuality - you were ahead of your time! Love you !
-
goodbye
-
Glad to see I'm not the only 20-something male that finds it to be one of the funniest shows, well, ever. Thanks for making me feel more hetero guys!RIP Bea"You'll have to excuse my mother. She suffered a slight stroke a few years ago which rendered her totally annoying."-Dorothy
-
Bea Arthur- you were a funny woman and truly golden.
-
Who is left for me to jerk-off to now? If Susan Boyle dies there will be no stroke worthy chicks left.
-
Wrong again, Maude!
RIP. -
One of the funniest women ever.
-
Bea never claimed this. She considered it nothing more than a role she was hired for related to a movie she was unfamiliar with.
Also, it wasn't fucking Greedo she danced with. She called him by a name that sounded something like "Bledlow". But I understand your thinking Quint. His kind all look alike, so why not just call him Greedo.... lol! -
My condolences to her family
-
I think that's the first ever apology I have ever seen on these talk backs.
-
You know it's going to happen!
-
What a loss. A great actress has gone on to the big stage in the sky...

and she died of cancer which Wade has....boy there are good possibles for this story if they do it right.

Bea had a long life. We should all be so lucky.

Bea Arthur was a Marine!

5 things you didn't know about her.
-
That show, the characters, the actresses, the humor, the writing, all golden.

WHO WILL RUN CHALUMNS CANTINA NOW?????
http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/6addcd5c2c/star-wars-holiday-special-cantina-song-from-beaarthurfan -
It's not so funny when it's true.
-
I think I was like 8 and everyone watched All in the Family religiously.
As a kid I didn't get the humor of Maude but Ms Barbeau had a couple of good points that kept me watching.
Watched reruns years later and was taken aback by how funny Maude was.
But she really shined on The Golden Girls.
Thank you Ms Arthur, wherever you are... -
It's really aged greatly as I watch re-runs now. The cast was perfect, and it was so well-written and genuinely funny. Bea Arthur was just fantastic in it. She was also great in "Maude". That show was so cutting-edge in the 70's and it doesn't get the credit it deserves. I can't believe some of the stuff that was on that show.
-
...As her character from the Star Wars Holiday Special to commemorate her. I'm not joking. She was, after all, the owner of the Mos Eisley cantina.
-
She turned down induction in the TV Hall Of Fame because, "...there was going to be a ceremony and all that crap. I hate that kind of thing." THAT'S the Bea Arthur I love.
-
That cantina scene now has an added poignancy. RIP, Golden Girl.
-
the baftas this evening. off topic. Jane Trantor(who know runs bbc worldwide america) got two of the biggest awards of the evening the alan clarke award and the special award who was given the award by david tennant. It was jane trantor who fought tooth and nail to bring back dr who to the bbc who were very hostile about its return. but the biggie was the bafta fellowship which this year went to French and saunders who were given the award by dame helen mirren.
-
"God'll get you for that Quint!" (To paraphrase Ms. Arthur) Sad news, she was a unique talent.
-
Bea Arthurs character Ackameena was NOT the owner of the Mos Eisley cantina....that would be Chalumn the Wookiee. Ackameena was the night shift bartender. Whurer was the day shift barman...get your shit straight. Some of us take this very, very seriously. I'm currently working on my epic 235 page Ackameena short story in the hopes of having it featured in an upcoming Star Wars short story collection. If that doesnt work out I may add some more porn to it and post it online as a fan-fic. I'll keep you updated....
-
I doubt it would ever happen. Lucasfilm seems to be in denial of the x-mas special...which is lame, because its lameness brings it right round to cool again whereas most of the shit Lucasfilm thinks is cool tends to lean towards the lame.
-
She probably was one of the best straight faced ladies out there. Thank you for the laughs Ms Arthur!
-
RANTBREATH SAYS: Bea Arthur rocked! DannyGloversBleedingScrotum says: Wow, I miss Bea Arthur! DocPuzazu says: Hey, that show rocked! No, none of this is meant to represent any of the names involved and these aren't real quotes. However, it shows to me that Bea Arthur posessed the rarest of gifts - the ability to turn Talkbackers into civil human beings. Seriously, though - Bea was a favorite, GOLDEN GIRLS is a favorite. Sophia and Dorothy will now be in the pantheon of the Immortals. She's just hilarious.
-
thanks otm shank, that exchange from history of the world, part 1 was pure comedy gold.
bea arthur ruled any role she had, even as herself, at the various celeberty roasts she attended. she definately elevated those events, and was a good sport about all the potshots taken at her... she will be missed. -
I mean God bless, but c'mon do we really need 10 thousand posts about this?
-
my friend and I sat down to cheesecake today and made disparaging jokes about Bea looking like a man. We agreed it's how she'd have wanted it.
-
Just wondering?
-
Betty White was the moron. Rue McLannahan was the slut. Estelle Getta was the granny. Bea Arthur was the grouchy straight man to the other three goofs.
-
Do we need to memorialize everyone? This site has gone beyond strange in the last couple of years - define the demographic that gives a shit about minute by minute updates on Wolverine and a eulogy for one of the Golden Girls?
-
I remenber as a kid i would sit down and watch golden girls that show was funny back in the day. it sadden me that Bea Arthur will be no longer with us, i hope where she may be she giving someone one a hard time.
-
initiate snu-snu!
-
RIP Bea Arthur. But that was a funny ass quote from a roast.
-
Best part of that was the camera cutting to her and her shaking her fist in fury.
-
go fuck your self. This is the first post on here where people have gotten along, shared jokes, and whatnot. What else should we talk about? Harry being on the take? How shitty Wolverine is going to be? How half the people think the captain's chair looks good but the other half think it looks like shit? Should we bitch that "The Office" gets a talkback thread but "Supernatural" doesn't? Just let us enjoy ourselves, man! If you don't care for the topic, go find another topic, or go wash the sand out of your vagina.
-
Proper punctuation motherfucker, do you use it?
-
80s, as in hers, is just that. 80s, a pluralization without posession. '80s denotes 1980s, 1880s, etc. The apostrophe denotes the omitted 19 or 18. Then there's the example 6's. On "Battlestar Galactica", 6's dress was red. 7's silver uniform titillated "Star Trek" fans.
-
"It was a wonderful time, but I had no idea it was even a part of the whole Star Wars thing. I just remember singing to a bunch of people with funny heads."
-
I'm not sure how much credence I can gie in the future to a reviewer of anything media-related who claims to have no familiarity with Maude and is barely familiar with All in the Family, two of the most important series in the history of television. Sheesh.
-
Was one of the few shows we could stand to watch together. Farewell Ms Arthur. You were a class act even when you weren't.
-
i have that song stuck in my head
-
"I just remember singing to a bunch of people with funny heads." Quote of the day.
RIP, Bea. -
Ooops, wrong post.
-
Goodnight, but not goodbye. Is that a tear, friend? Why, yes it is.
-
Does anyone else remember her SNL appearance in the 70's? The one that spoofed tv - disease of the week/movie of the week's. It was rarely repeated because it was so controversial. Though, I thought it was unbelievably funny and spot-on.

you're right, it was the sand in my vagina; all better now.
later we maybe we can all get together for a chico and the man retrospective at the alamo draft house and play some mah jong.
the site works when people post news, reviews and general opinion on new film and tv projects (best of all when they aren't sequels, reboots or prequels - twitchfilm.net does a much better job at this). all this reminiscing about tired shit-coms from decades ago is a bore.
that having been said, i'll let you get back to your pathetic, fake-ass "grieving". enjoy. -
PALADIN_68: I heartily agree. I'll give him that he mightn't have been that familiar with Maude - I don't personally know it to rerun as often as All In The Family so, unless he went out and watched the DVDs, his exposure would have been limited. But AITF was the backbone of an entire decade of television, continues to re-run frequently, and any professional television reviewer or journalist worth his salt would know AITF as well as he would know Seinfeld, Friends, I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc...
But, let's face it: AICN is not a journalisticly professional site - and that's why many people like it, because its a site run by geeks for geeks. But, to its own effect, AICN is taken seriously by the film and television community for its large fan base.
Maybe its time the AICN staff starts to take their site more seriously and, at least, hire an editor. -
It isn't. CTRL + F is your friend :)
-
You will be missed. Great talent leaving us with some great characters and memories.
-
I used to love Maude as a little kid. I don't know why. I used to love the hell out of that show. I loved golden girls also. Rest in Peace, Bea!

Bea Arthur could barely contain her sexuality on television.
by leafar the lost
How many young men over the years have lusted for Bea Arthur? There were too many to count. Her work in "Maude", "Laugh-In", "The Star Wars Holiday Special," and "The Golden Girls," made the hearts of men race for generations.
What was it about her that made men go wild whenever she appeared on TV? Was it just her body? No, I think it was something inside her. Whenever she was on TV I felt a sexual energy inside of her that was ready to explode at any moment. Her lust was like electricity all over her "golden" body.Watching Bea Arthur was like watching pornography, but without the nudity and sex. Men, and some women, all over the world will miss her. Her passing is a void that cannot be filled. -
I'm a bit taken aback by this, too. Unless Quint is like 15 years old, I can't imagine not being familiar with probably the most influential and important sitcom in the history of television. You do know that Rob Reiner had a career before Spinal Tap, right? And before those 'feed the children,' Gloria used to be hot? btw, speaking of the 70s, was Bea Arthur ever on the Muppet Show? I know Jean Stapleton was and was brilliant. Anyway, rest in peace, Bea. You were a consummate goddess.
-
I remember being what's now called a tween in the mid-70's and watching Maude. Besides the kick-ass Donny Hathaway singing and Ms. Barbeau as the daughter-- Bea Arthur as Maude was awesome. She was funny, opinionated and powerful. Flash forward to Fall 1985- my freshman year at college and being the shut-in that I was at the time- She made my Saturday nights less miserable in my dorm room.
-
From a Letterman Top Ten many moons ago, "Least Popular Stores at the Mall." I always think of that when I hear about ol' Bea. She was a funny lady. RIP, Maude...
-
at Adrienne Barbeau's tighter and tighter wardrobe choices, I enjoyed the comedic perfromance of the late Bea Arthur as Maude (and Bill Macy of course). Norman Lear was at the peak of his powers and it was reflected in that series. And Ms. Arthur was just as funny the last I saw on a recent Comedy Central roast, she was still knocking them dead.
-
One of the very best there ever was. She could always get me laughing no matter how bad a day I had. Totally one of a kind and irreplaceable. God got YOU now Bea. Thanks for about a billion laughs.
-
DUH!
-
Not familair with "Maude" and "All in the Family?" WTF Sucks to be you.
"I wouldn't fuck her with Bea Arthur's dick!
Cut to Close up of Arthur laughing her ass off.
She was an animal rights activist so she gets points and was one of the good ones. -
To her and the show's credit, "Golden Girls" had no right being as funny as it was/is. Like someone else said, it was not made for me, a punk kid of 13 at the time it aired, but it roped me in because of the great characters and damn funny one-liners. Dot's best line "...to the inseam, Rose!"
And seriously to have so-called pros on here that make their living writing about this shit to actually admit having not seen or heard of "Maude" and "All in the Family" is laughable, sad and unacceptable. -
but FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT!
-
....they named the letter after her." I forgot who said that, it was in a comedy central roast of someone (not Bea). But Bea was the bomb, prolly why Golden Palace didn't make it (featuring an up and coming Don Cheadle if I'm not mistaken) since she wasn't in it. God rest your soul, Bea.
-
Loved he in "All in the family" and "Maude". She was fantastic in "Golden Girls".
-
I was taking a dump at work once, and there were a few other people in the bathroom at the time. Sitting there reflecting, I suddenly remembered an old Bea Arthur joke: 'What's the difference between Bea Arthur and an old shoe? You could eat an old shoe if you had to...' I burst out laughing in the stall. I can only imagine what my co-workers thought.
