Cannes '09 Lineup Announced, And It's Loaded With Potential! Tarantino! Von Trier! Haneke! Noe! Ming-Liang!

Published at:  Apr 23, 2009 1:51:14 PM CDT

Beaks here...

Looking over the lineup for the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, I have but one word: brutal.

Though the shindig promises to get off to a fairly sunny, if somewhat bittersweet, start with Pete Docter's UP, it looks like festival-goers are in for some serious cinematic punishment thereafter. There's a new horror film from Lars von Trier (ANTICHRIST), a vampire flick from Park Chan-wook (THIRST), a period drama about "ritual punishment" at a rural German school from Smilin' Michael Haneke (THE WHITE RIBBON), a "psychodrama" from IN MY SKIN's Marina de Van (NE TE RETOURNE PAS), and a movie about near-death experiences from Gaspar Noe (ENTER THE VOID).

Someone want to give me an over-under on walkouts for Noe's follow-up to IRREVERSIBLE? According to Noe, here's what his audience is in for:

The visions described in the script are inspired partly by the accounts of people who have had near-death experiences, who describe a tunnel of light, seeing their lives flashing past them and "astral" visions, and partly by similar hallucinatory experiences obtained by consuming DMT, the molecule which the brain sometimes secretes at the moment of death and which, in small doses, enables us to dream at night. The film should sometimes scare the audience, make it cry and, as much as possible, hypnotise it.

Yikes. And just in case you think this talk of "astral visions" means Noe's gone all soft on us, consider this disclaimer which was attached to a poster at the Berlin Film Festival: "Viewers are advised that this film contains scenes of heavy drug use, graphic sex and extreme violence." As someone who's probably going to list IRREVERSIBLE as one of the ten best films of the decade... I'm fucking terrified by this thing.

So where's the relief from this onslaught of (presumed) unpleasantness? There's Ang Lee's TAKING WOODSTOCK, Tsai Ming-liang's FACE (a "comedy" about a filmmaker exploring the Salome myth), and LES HERBES FOLLES, a new movie from eight-five-year-old master Alain Resnais. Here's the full list of entries. See anything that inflames your loins?

and such. I mean it's in France, what are they gonna threaten the super rich/elite audience with, cheese? A ton of interesting sounding movies that people with more money than me get to see first. That's my shocker for the day.

I'm actually kinda interested in the reaction Inglourious Basterds gets (still annoyed by that purposeful misspelling).

If you're talking memorable impact then you're spot on, if you're talking about a movie to cherish and watch numerous times, well than I disagree.

Just thinking about that movie makes my jaw drop.

Any review for Inglorious Basterds that doesn't already say it pales in comparison to an unseen Expendables will immediately be branded a "plant" by at least twenty-five talkbackers. Just you wait 'till it screens, you'll see.

We've got some info on Enter the Void here in The Zone: http://zone.aintitcool.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=71675 (delete the spaces).

Yeah I know, The Zone sucks. It's deader than Da Vinci etc. etc.

Out of that lineup, I'm most looking forward to Ang Lee's "don't take the brown acid" flick and a new Alan Resnais film. I just saw one he did with Dirk Bogarde the other day, I think it was called Providence, and it cracked open my little mind. Crazy stuff.

    by the_first_rule_of_fight_club

They should really make a film about some nazis who round up roth, tarantino, and certain aicn staffers and proceed to bash their brains out of their ears with baseball bats. They should call it "glourious basterds". I'd pay money to see that.

    Irreversible not a date movie

    by ataraxia999

I got punched hard in the chest by my friend, as I recommended Irreversible, not describing it too much and vaguely putting it in the effed-up cinema grouping. Well, his girl had similar tastes, Eraserhead, Argento and whatnot... They apparently watched it together, and then broke up over the following few weeks. I apologized but still got the wind knocked out of me.

In addition to the others mentioned, there are new works by Jonnie To (it's cool he's in the festival at all let alone competition), Park Chan-Wook, Terry Gilliam, Alejandro Amenabar, Sam Raimi, Michel Gondry, and Bong Joon-ho. This is the only time I can remember actually wanting to go to Cannes because the lineup is so strong.

On the big screen, it's hard to stop peeking from behind my hands…That takes a hell of a lot of power to engage the audience viscerally and emotionally. His films are more effective than any horror film I can think of. I think dread is the word I'm looking for.

IRREVERSIBLE - I had to turn away at times.

    by lonegun

One of the most graphically violent films I've ever witnessed, but a very good movie nonetheless. I wound up watching it two more times. I actually think the backwards narrative was put to more effective use in that film than in MEMENTO (which is also a great film). In IRREVERSIBLE, the backwards narrative made the whole tragedy in the story even more heartbreaking. And the camera work was stunning.

    I will say this

    by seppukudkurosawa

The people who I've seen own Irreversible also own movies like The Story of Ricky, a few Larry Clark movies, one or two Takashi Miike movies, Faces of Death, things like Romper Stomper and Made in Britain. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the individual films, but a large chunk of their fanbase does seem to consist of young adults so disaffected that they can only watch the most gruesome, repugnant things in order to be emotionally moved in any way.

It's hard to say whether these movies are more moral because they let the impact of the violence hit home, or if they've got a violence fetish. The fact that none of these filmmakers have strayed too far from the "sick shit!" genre implies it might be more of the latter than some of you are letting on.

    MOTHER!!!!!! VENGEANCE!!!!!!!

    by gluecifer

ENTER THE VOID, France, Gaspar Noe
    VENGEANCE, Hong Kong-France-U.S., Johnnie To
    VINCERE, Italy-France, Marco Bellocchio
    THIRST, South Korea-U.S., Park Chan-wook
    BROKEN EMBRACES, Spain, Pedro Almodovar
    TAKING WOODSTOCK, U.S., Ang Lee
THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, Canada-France, Terry Gilliam
DRAG ME TO HELL, U.S., Sam Raimi
L'EPINE DANS LE COEUR, France, Michel Gondry
    AIR DOLL, Japan, Hirokazu Kore-eda
    MOTHER, South Korea, Bong Joon-ho
    NYMPH Thailand, Pen-ek Ratanaruang

The movies I'm the REALLY waiting for: Mother, Vengeance, Drag me to hell (FUCK THE TORTURE PORN) and Taking Woodstock.

The fact that the latest (bad...and overlong) joke of that clown Tarantino is in competition, and that Mother isn't is another proof that Cannes officials probably love the taste of Tarantino's cum in their mouth...

Tarantino has disappointed and awed us over the years, so I hope Inglorious Basterds is gonna rock. What I really want from Tarantino is another more introvert piece like Jackie Brown. That movie was an underrated little gem; just thinking about it brings a smile to my face.
