UPDATED!! The Finished/Theatrical Version Of WOLVERINE Has Been Seen!! Just How Different Is It From That Workprint??

Published at: April 23, 2009, 1:59 p.m. CST

Merrick again... Veritas has been following the Talkbacks & sent this follow-up message:
I've attached pics of the two scenes - NEITHER WERE IN THE WORKPRINT or final cut.
And here is the trailer I was referring to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcdyUCGjcCc

[[[ORIGINAL ARTICLE FOLLOWS]]]

Merrick here...
When the workprint of WOLVERINE leaked a few weeks back, we heard a great deal from Fox about how said print represented a different edit of the film than we'd see in theaters. We heard how recently shot footage was still to be incorporated into the movie, and were told the leaked version was months old (despite the presence of FX time-stamped only a week or two before the leak). So, many of us have been wondering exactly how the final version of WOLVERINE would differ from its workprint iteration. Veritas sent in the following message after viewing the edit we'll be seeing in theaters, also including an aside about a conspiracy of silence surrounding advance screenings of the film.
Here's Veritas...
Sometimes there are clauses prohibiting us from writing about a movie before a certain date ("embargo"). But this was different: we had to sign a clause that we wouldn't even TALK about the movie until two days prior to its US release, especially on the web. I found that quite odd. Add to that recent reports that the finished version is as long as the leaked workprint, even though FOX stubbornly insists that the workprint is missing the material from the reshoots. It makes sense, too, as the trailers have scenes that are not featured in the workprint (Wolverine carrying his girlfriend to the beach, a young Ororo in Nigeria). Well, having seen the finished film, the mystery is solved: the workprint version IS in fact identical to the release print, sans effect and some audio work. It's obvious that FOX is trying their darndest to keep this news from getting out, because it will eliminate most of the motivation for people who have seen the workprint to pay for a ticket. Some scenes from the trailer are not in the finished version, either. The finished effects are lackluster, to say the least - some really bad CGI work made me groan numerous times (especially, but not restricted to, Patrick Stewart's cameo). The scene with Stewart looks so much better in the workprint - trying to digitally de-age him did NOT work this time around... Good pacing, good lead performances, and some cool comic book fights overcome a non-existing story, horrible dialog (including the classic "I'm so cold..."), and criminally underdeveloped characters. It's a fun flick, but it will never be considered one of the great comic book movies of our time (like Iron Man, Dark Knight, Watchmen, etc.). They also have to jump through some ridiculous hoops to reset all the relationships to properly connect it to the first "X-Men" movie (unnecessary, I think - who seriously gives a shit?).

    by drewlicious

Pretty much what I was expecting. I'm not really a huge Wolverine fan so being merely entertaining is enough for me. I really enjoyed the X-Men movies but comparing them to what has come out since their release they're kind of like going to IN&Out as opposed to going to a steak and ribs dinner at the Texas Roadhouse (awesome food btw). I like In&Out, sometimes thats exactly what I want, but not completely satisfying.

    Death by Deadpool

    by XSE_Drake

The only thing they could have done to keep this film from being as terrible as the workprint would have been a complete retooling of Deadpool in Act III. Granted, the rest of the film is certainly not by any means GOOD, but it's not Elektra-bad either. But judging from the commercials and recent trailers (and this review), it seems Deadpool is still in bald IFC mute mode, and that's going to be an absolute deal-breaker for a shit-ton of fans. I've said it before and I'll say it again: He's the friggin' MERC WITH A MOUTH! Gah! Stupid, stupid Fox. And the CGI that was so awful in the workprint (Sabretooth's absurd leaping after Cyclops, Gambit's magically levitating sparkly cards) have clearly not been changed... and are in fact all over the commercials. This film has HACK written all over it.

Boy do some people in Hollywood really hate him or what? They leaked that workprint and the finished F/X are reportedly half-assed. I think Rothman is really in a pickle if this movie bombs, which by today's standards, meaning the budget for the project and the release schedule for the rest of the summer films, is if it makes less than $175 million domestic.-----later-----m

  • April 23, 2009, 1:14 p.m. CST

    I seriously don't fucking understand...

    by thedarklinglord

Why do studios get so overly pissy about people discussing their leaked movies? Oh, that's right, because if the movie is shit - and that always seems to be the case when the studio rushes a press release stating that what was seen wasn't the finished work - then nobody is going to bother paying in the theater. Fucking morons. They go about it all the wrong way. <br> <br> What the studio should do is intentionally leak a cut of their movies, especially the ones they hope to be huge box office successes. And if the buzz is strongly negative, they should give serious consideration to the complaints being muttered on the web. Then take that information back to HQ and say, "What can we do to fix this? Is it even possible to salvage things? Can we maybe get a writer in here to sharpen and smarten up the dialogue? How about we invest more time and money in the special effects and CGI? Do we need to shoot some additional scenes to help make things more cohesive? Do we need total reshoots of key scenes?" You know, kinda treat it like a massive test screening. Sure, it'd be nice if they got it right the first time so they wouldn't HAVE to go back, spending more time and money to fix their fuckups, but...well, this is Fox after all, and not only are they unashamed to totally shit the bed, but they happily roll around in their feces, making crap angels and everything. <br> <br> But, seriously, why not opt to invest more money and get things right? Look at the fucking sales figures for The Dark Knight and Iron Man. You're going to make your fucking money back, and you're going to have people positively salivating for the next installment which, if you treat with equal respect and passion, will make you even MORE money. <br> <br> So, I'm all in favor of leaked movies. And if the studios opt not to use the criticisms and feedback they get from those incidents, intentional or unfortunate, then fuck 'em; they deserve to have their movies tank at the box office and suffer crippling financial losses. <br> <br> And if the leaked film is openly embraced and praised? How, exactly, does that hurt a studio? Just because several million people download the movie in craptacular QuickTime or some equally shitty format and watch it on their computers, how is that going to keep them from paying $10 or so a pop to enjoy a kick-ass movie on a huge theater screen with awesome audio? And if it's really good, they'll continue to go back and see it two, three, four or more times. If the movie is every bit as amazing as it should be, there will still be a legion of people dying to see it. You're not going to lose money. <br> <br> Fuck Fox. Fuck Rothman. Fuck these shitty, soulless, half-assed movies. And fuck Marvel for letting them drop a Cleveland steamer on the X-Men franchise.

    by Executor

He's not reviewing the workprint, he's reviewing the finished film he saw, and explaining the difference between that and the workprint. (i.e. audio and effects.) Missing scenes? No.<p>For those who are confused by the "scenes not in the workprint but in the trailer" sentence, he is saying he THOUGHT that there would be scenes in the finished film that were not in the workprint, based on FOX's comments and the fact that a few scenes in the trailers were not in the workprint. However, it seems these scenes have hit the cutting room floor, and no "reshoots" are evident.

Next shot he has a movie Wolverine haircut and manicured chops, then proceed to that god-awful flying-off-an-explosion-lifted -army-hummer-towards-a-floating-helicopter scene from the trailer. <p> Ironically, it neither motivates me to shave, buy Schick products, or see Wolverine in theaters.

He's discussing the FINISHED VERSION - the workprint is mentioned only as a point of comparison - as we were told there'd be many differences (which apparently are not there). The workprint is mentioned, but is *not* the version that is being reviewed here. Veritas wants me to make clear to ya'll that: if you aren't a comic book fan, this should make for decent superhero entertainment, and it's well worth the price of admission. I get that they aren't reviewing the work print, but if they are compairing the work print to the final product, then that means the reviewer must have illegally downloaded the work print inorder to do a comparison in the first place. I don't care if someone steals a copy of this or any other movie, but Harry had a little shit fit when someone else did it, and now they are doing the same thing. Hypocritical jerks is what I say.

  • April 23, 2009, 1:31 p.m. CST

And I saw it too...and WHY it sucked so much:

    by Executor

<Slight spoilers, if you care)<p>The trailer seems like a cool movie: Wolverine's love is killed, so he joins this group to forget the pain and hunt down those responsible. Right?<p>But the movie is: Wolverine joins a group and realizes they are assholes (plus Wolvy is a soft-hearted pussy from the beginning) and leaves, then settles down with a girl and she is killed by his brother/Sabretooth so Wolverine joins up with Stryker to stop Sabretooth (even though Stryker was Sabretooth's leader...hmmmmm, do you think he's involved...????) and then 3 seconds after Stryker makes Wolverine indesctructible he tries to kill him like a complete retard so now Wolverine wants to kill Sabretooth AND Stryker. So he goes back to find them. The End. <p> Oh, and just to make it even more boring, his girlfriend is a lying cunt whore who's still alive, so his whole motivation for revenge is thrown out the window too. He should've taken the claws to her too.<p>And Gambit is a fucking moron...he escaped from "The Island" and doesn't want to go back, and thinks Wolvy is trying to trick him, but then he sees Wolvy burying his claws in Sabretooth, the one person he KNOWS is responsible for kidnapping him...and what does he do? Let Wolvy kill Sabretooth? No. He twirls his stick and blasts them apart like a complete retard and lets Sabretooth get away. Huh?<p>And not to get into X-Men movie history or whatnot, but in terms of continuity...when in XMen2 Wolvy is trying to figure out where the fuck he came from, how come Cyclops doesn't pipe up with "I'm not sure where you came from, but when I was a teenager you rescued me from this island." It's all bullshit (they just wanted to shoehorn a character in like all prequels do). <p>OK, I'm going to stop...the longer I write the more bitter and angry I get that someone could not only write this piece of shit, but actually make it.

    by BMacSmith

it spends all this time developing these excellent characters, then in the last act throws them into an absurd, silly plot to blow up the world. Good movie and book though, just not perfect. The movie needed stuff cut, but i think i really just wanted a movie with Rorsach, Night Owl, and COmedian doing stuff.

So since the leaked version, which they said was so different, in fact, isn't. Then why should I go see the finished version? Just because of the way they fucked up Deadpool, I won't pay for this movie _ever_. And I disagree with Merrick, this is not a decent movie at all. Because of the way they ruin solid comic book characters, this should be boycotted.

Right, he's reviewing the finished film...

Finished film = workprint + effects. Therefore review of finished film - comments on effects = review of workprint.

    by wcme

Sucks when filming; Sucks when reshoots are needed; Sucks when Hugh comes on AICN and tells us reshoots are "ok, really!";Sucks when Trailer comes on and shows gay ass BONECLAWS and assorted other albatrosses to the CLASSIC (thats non-retconed) marvel universe; Sucks in stolen "work print" ver that Fox scrambles to delete from every poster on Rapidshare and Megaupload; and STILL sucks in final form with crappy CGI added to the exact same print that was the workprint with no new added fottage. Hugh way be "Devastated" this was leaked early but A ball suck is still a ball suck. It hasnt changed one iota any step of the way. Sorry dudes. This sucks worse then the end of X2 and the entire x3 combined.

    Difference between COMPARING and REVIEWING.

    by Executor

He is responding to FOX's lies that the "workprint is different". It's reportage. <p>Example: cocaine is illegal, but a scientist can compare two different types of cocaine in a lab and report the chemical make-up of each one. <p>In addition, what makes it "different" is that now the FINAL FILM IS BEING SCREENED. So the leaked version can be talked about in context, not just as the SOLE REPRESENTATION OF THE FILM. The film is out there now in an official version. It is fair game now.<p>Are you saying that no one in the history of the world should be allowed to talk about the difference between the two versions??? How utterly fucking absurd is that?

    by Gabba-UK

....stop sucking Murdicks cock, suck on the end of a shotgun and blow his fucking head off. I'd pay good box office to see that by the way. He has taken a once great movie studio with a reputation of risking taking and going out on a limb and turned it into a banal, limp-wristed, unprincipled mockery of an organisation which is, supposedly, in the entertainment history. Do Fox really want to know why The Dark Knight was such a success? I'll tell them and it won't cost them the budget that this POS cost them. It's because Warner Brothers don't have Rothman in charge!!!! Rothman is the Uwe Boll of studio heads. No one can understand how the fuck he stays in his chosen career!!!!!

but using my skills of deduction, (learnt from tv detective shows) - in order to make a credible comparison between the finished film and the work print it seems clear that he must have SEEN the work print at some point. <p>Unless he's been working on the film (at which point everyone shouts PLANT) it seems a reasonable assumption that it was seen via downloading a copy from the internet. <p>Aintitcool's posting of THIS review could also be seen as a tacit admission that it's ok, to download unreleased movies from the internet as long as you don't review them- which i am sure is not the case.

Spider Man 3 wasn't great but we've seen much worse. X-Men 3 finally had the action I'd been waiting to see in a mutant movie. David Beckham built his career playing for them. they're one of the most widely supported in the world, mainly due to their habit of winning a lot and having shit-tons of money allowing them to buy more top players and advertise more than anyone else.<p> As a result they tend to attract gloryhounds and people who feel the need to back the top dogs because they're scared that their team might lose.<p> Much like the kind of folk who only regard Superman, Spiderman and Wolverine as comics worth reading, because hey... if it ain't a household name then it must be a bunch of shit.

so a review of the finished film by someone whose seen the workp

    by Cedar_Room

and proves false every notion that the finished film would be different. But if the workprint INCLUDES all the re-shot material - just how fucking bad must it have been beforehand?? Now I obviously haven't seen the workprint, as that would have meant downloading it illegally - and illegal downloading is the principle cause of cancer in babies (FACT). <p> BUT - if I HAD seen the workprint - I may consider the film to have been OK if rushed towards the end and the recurring problem of throwing too many characters at something that just needs to be told simply. I may have thought the re-shoots and re-editing could have made the film fairly decent - but this appears to not be the case. <p> You know what would be really funny though?? Is if this film opens very strongly (and there are indication outside of the fanboy community that people are excited for this) then it will blow all the bullshit out of the water that downloading destroys films. Wouldn't it be the ultimate irony?? I wait with baited breath.

Comic book films have issues anyway

    by wcme

While most films have issues and story plots you can drive a truck through, you wont ever find films with the sheer rancid goats bladder texture of SUPERMAN RETURNS and HULK (I suspect THE SPIRIT is very close from the 6 scenes i saw so i am awaiting the strength to actually put this on.)Some decisions to adapt elements of the classic story to screen boggle my mind. They dont ruin the entire film, but make what could be a 5 star film a 3 star film. And they dont effect everyone and thats ok. I thought IRON MAN was the single best film of last summers crop of slam bangers (I paid to see it 3 times) and WATCHMEN was 3 out of 5 and hated the alterations from the comic and the new idiotic ending. But when you look at films and see logic flaws it really makes you hang your head and weep for what could be more if they just took a deep breath and adjust things somewhat. The SPIDERMAN series takes the SCIENTIST out of Peter Parker entirely. he's no longer the near rival of Reed Richards who can create web shooters himself - he must be a cool mutant that shoots webs out of a gland in his skin. He cant be the one super hero who could out think Doc Ock and defuse the weapon at the end of SPIDERMAN 2 - he has to actually get Doc to come back from his madness to defeat his own weapon! Think about what story potential you destroy from not having MECHANICAL web shooters - ANYONE could have been bitten by that spider and had glad web shooters and a rock solid body - even Joe The Janitor! In fights, the web shooters never run out, he can never swap them out for special web fluid designs to combat fire, electricity, or other hazards and keep them in his belt with his camera... and how cool would that train scene have been in Spiderman 2 if he used all his various kinds and thicknesses of web fluid to gum up the wheels, make web parachutes to create drag, web the passing buildings and attach to the train to slow it down ....instead he uses his indestructable leg muscles to stop the train like superman(!) and show an entire train load of people his face! (yeah, like no one had a camera, no one could describe for a sketch artist his face, no one worked for the kingpin and needed money....wow. X-men 2's end is mired in having Jean go OUTSIDE the plane to start it(!) and hold back the water when she could have done it all from the inside....and the whole revised origin of Nighcrawler - did he become that way in the secret lab when Wolverine did? And while its near to have Wolverine (who's skin heals as fast as Jean melts it) walk bravely up the hill to stop her from going super nova, it rapes the death of our beloved jean on the moon with Scott in the comics. Poor Fans like us. The movies wont ever get it right. But curse us for not saying "that Spiderman rules, yo" without putting on your thinking cap!

The X-Men films are generally God-awful for the most part. Bryan Singer is a hack and in fact I dislike him more than Ratner because everyone is so convinced that he's so fucking amazing. X-Men 1 and 2 were so damn pedestrian and people who are surprised that this franchise has gone downhill since then are merely blind.

    Okay, Deadpool ...

    by DennisMM

is not the character in the comics. So? Neither is Wolverine. Neither is Cyclops. Neither is Jean Grey. Neither are Professor X nor Magneto. Characters are tossed in, using old names, with different names and appearances, with powers that may be changed for convenience's sake by the movie makers. Where was all of the yelling over Pyro as a 16-year-old American? People bitch about Deadpool only because he's a cult favorite. The general public will say, "Deadpool? He was weird, but all right" and not give a damn about the fucking "merc with a mouth."

Perez Hilton is more masculine than Hugh Jackman at this point

    by Darkartist

Hugh Jackman never captured that perpetually pissed off and feral energy Wolverine possessed in the comics. In the Chris Claremont days I always thought Wolverine could go berserker and slaughter everyone at any given moment. He used to be a fucking scary dude and I loved that about the character. If you've seen Hugh Jackman in roles that don't require switchblades in his knuckles, he's a bigger fairy than Tinkerbell. He's on award shows singing and dancing and swishing around like Liza Minelli. It's hilarious! I don't see Wolverine when I look at him anymore. He certainly isn't Wolverine in this movie or it'd be rated R. That Hulk Vs. cartoon was a better representation of Wolverine's savagery than the Weapon X scene. It was completely toothless! I fucking hated that they gave Wolverine a motive for attacking the Weapon X personnel. In the comics he killed everyone in that building because the operation drove him to madness. It wasn't because he overheard Stryker telling them to erase his memories. Bollocks! If FOX wants to see real money with the Xmen property they should reboot the franchise and use Grant Morrison's E for Extinction as the model. Get Chris Pine to play Scott Summers, keep Jackman as Wolverine, find the equivalent of a young Monica Belluci to play Emma Frost and have her dress EXACTLY as she does in the series. Bring back Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde too.

The only reason they were considered good was because the first one was the first major comic book film post-Batman and Robin. Because it wasn't a total trainwreck and got Wolverine (the most popular character) right for the most part, people gave it more credit than it deserves. And as far as X-2 goes, yeah it had some nice action scenes, but the the plot kind of plodded along to nothing more than a climax that totally ripped off Wraith of Kahn.

Thanks. Didn't it also bother you in SPIDERMAN 1 when Goblin gassed Spierman and they "talked" on the roof for about 5 mins....but the design of the masks made neither characters mouth move?!?! There's little head shakes and tilts of the head but it drags on forever and there's all this talking and just these stone solid faces!! I picture the mouth part moving like in the 60's Cartoon series on each! What we got was a "power rangers" scene!! And Peter has to walk down the street thrusting his hips to ladies and some get turned on and some get grossed out?!? Some very crazy stuff in Hollywood. None of which is anywhere near what made these characters last and become beloved icons since 1961. Dont even get me started on the Silver Surfer sleeping INSIDE of his board and showing movies in his stomach!!!

It seems that comic book = big crazy spectacle in Hollywood minds, with no exceptions.<p>But here's a character who has some of the least-epic powers in all of comicdom (claws and he's really hard to hurt), whose appeal lies mostly in his personality, attitude, and overall persona. So, wouldn't the best thing to do be to scale a film to that level?<p>It's the same problem I had with Van Helsing. Take all the CGI out of it, make it a grounded, simple, old-style monster film, and it could have been classic. Instead it was like watching a video game, and full to the brim with junk--stupid, stupid, unnecessary, outlandish junk.<p>I'd line up for a "First Blood"-style Hugh Jackman Wolverine film. But then I see Ryan Reynolds in some stupid costume and all the joy immediately leaves the idea of this movie.

Giving someone a platform to violate an agreement signed in good faith (check the calendar, and the terms of his NDA), one that discloses proprietary information with a monetary value to it, seems scummier than what that FOX hack did in writing about the workprint. Clearly, he was just too stupid to know what he was doing. You guys know EXACTLY what you're doing in publishing this information—limiting the earnings of the property of a corporation and corporate head that you LOATHE. Don't get me wrong—FOX can, as has been suggested many times, eat ALL of the dicks, and Rothman can go back for seconds. I just don't see what moral ground AICN has to stand on in order to call for someone to lose their livelihood when you see nothing wrong with something like this. Why even have Ryan Reynolds? The movie in my head he is basically a animal in the wild after weapon X, killing deer, whatever just survive not knowing anything about himself. then he comes across a cabin with silver fox. she somewhat tames him. they fall in love, whatever. Stryker finds him. Sends units after him they kill her. Wolvie goes apeshit and brings it to them hardcore. I mean that is infinitely better then what is in this film.

(and, um, 50 plus years of comics. Even little kids know hes a brilliant scientist!) He studies all night and day and thus uses not only his new body skill but his brain to the fullest effect! The Film Rights to Marvel Characters

    by fiester

Perhaps someone on here knows the definitive score on who owns the film rights to which characters, because it's very fuzzy to me. <p> As I understand it, Marvel sold the rights to characters like the X-Men and Spider-Man, Daredevil and The Hulk to studios like Fox with the stipulation that is the studio does not make a film utilizing that character within a specific time-frame, the rights revert to Marvel. <p> What I don't know is what this time-frame is and whether or not it resets each time a new film is made or what.<p> I also don't understand where the lines are drawn as far as the characters go. For instance: Does Fox own the rights to ALL characters ever appearing in an X-Men book or merely the mutants? <p> It seems as though, after the Ang Lee shitstorm that was his Hulk, the studio that owned those rights elected not to renew them by making another film and Marvel now owns the Hulk film rights again.<p> Presumably they now own the Daredevil film rights again as well (but I don't know for sure). <p> This seems the biggest reason why the Wolverine flick has the words "X-Men" in the title: so it fulfills the rights obligations that allows Fox to continue to control the rights to these characters. <p> Likewise it's why you are going to continue to see Spider-Man flicks: they have to make them or they lose the rights to the character. <p> As I said, it's all very fuzzy to me. I'd love to see a comprehensive breakdown of who owns what and what the obligations are to retain these rights, etc., from someone who knows.

Rothman is the Antichrist for comic fans.

    by kenjinattix

I think Hugh is a good guy. (Though I think he had something to do with killing Deadpool) But Rothman HATES ANYONE THAT READS OR LIKES COMIC BOOKS. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HATES THEM. From Spider-Man to Archie. X-Men 3 was like his personal FUCK YOU to fans. I'm convinced his toilet paper is just a bunch of Uncanny X-men comics. So this wasn't surprising. Fucking up then Killing Deadpool, Fucking up White Queen, Fucking up Gambit, Fucking up THE ENTIRE WEAPON X PROGRAM, Fucking up everything we know about Wolverine's healing factor(Adamantium Bullet? He's not a werewolf), Fucking up Blob, etc, etc, etc. Rothman HATES YOU. He hates me. He hates anyone who doesn't shut up and take what he gives them. So I'm not surprised. The naive part of me wants to pray that Jackman and Fox execs read this post and realize that we know they hate their fans and change their ways. But they won't change cuz non comic fans will see this SHIT. Most will see it because movies don't mean shit to them. Its a passionless investment of time that they would gladly trade for anything else. Some will see it to spite comic fans cuz we're purists. They don't like when we make a big deal about stuff from our childhood that effected OUR LIVES and counter our points about the STUPIDITY of changing ENTIRE CHARACTERS for NO REASON with equally stupid retorts like "Who cares about throw away characters getting changed?" or "You nerds would complain if they brushed Logan's hair slightly different." I just hope that everyone who loves comic books and X-men WON'T see this and it makes a big enough dent for it to bomb and maybe Fox will let the rights expire and it'll move on to a person who actually cares about the origins of what they're remaking. If not, I hope Fox just MAKES A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FUCKING MOVIE ALREADY IF THEY WANT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING. Though they really haven't done a good job of that either. Babylon AD much?

what i mean is having him build silly mechanical gadgets would totally distract from his character. The movies show that he is a really smart guy and thats all it really needed to me. I can definitely see them going that way in the sequels for growth (god knows how stale he has become by 3). Whats wrong with him stopping a train with his legs? he is super strong, too , you know? Its not out of character to use his physical skills to fix problems. He's not an intellectual.

The whole thing about Harry and company calling for the FOX reviewer to get fired? That WASNT about the ethics of movie downloading. It was about FOX going after the digital pirates and threatening to sue every 12 year old who downloaded the movie while having an employee on their staff admit to committing the same crime they were so up in arms about. NO ONE on this site was trying to get the guy fired for downloading the movie....they were using him as an example to point out what huge hypocrits FOX and co. were being...NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

    by Your_Moms_a_Cylon

I goddamn loathe Rob Liefeld. His creation of Deadpool was an obvious rip-off of Deathstroke, whom he wrote previously in Teen Titans. BUT....once other creators took him and made him a 4th-wall breaking jack-ass who is also batshit crazy and hilarious, the mockery of the character actually somehow turned him into an original and entertaining one. So, I disagree, and so do more than a handful of people, that no once likes Deadpool. And way to go speaking for others when you probably never leave your fucking computer desk. You are truly omniscient.

    I'm torn...

    by jimmy rabbitte

I really do feel as though this film will not be any good at all. If I see it, I'll be waiting until it's on Netflix. <p> However, some of the irrational fan view-points have me second guessing my decision not to see it.<p> First off, I don't get all the hate people throw at Watchmen. I never read the books; but I thought the film was very good. It was a solid 4 *'s out of 5.<p> Second, I laugh out loud any time someone defends Ang Lee's Hulk; and it happens at least once on every comic book related talk back. Lee's Hulk was a monumental waste of time. I remember when the studio went into damage control the week before it came out. They actually aired radio spots, trying to tell people what a great film it was. The spots actually said the words, "Ang Lee's Hulk is Spiderman's moody older brother." Complete and utter shit.<p> As for ranking superhero movies, I think it's tough to say because everybody has their favorite hero. Just for kicks though I'll list my top 5. <p> 5. Watchmen 4. Tim Burton's Batman 3. The Incredible Hulk 2. Ironman 1. The Dark Knight

    by wcme

Thats the second fatal flaw in the franchise and she is terrible. Wouldnt Rachel Mcadams have made a WAY more awesome MJ?! Fun loving, spunky, beautiful, but can be loving and sweet to peter. Yup. You and I are on the same page...Spiderman 2 on folks all time top lists?!? Wowzers. The whole Pizza Delivery opening is proof of whats wrong. I have this entire sequence in my mind of sort of the opening of the cartoon series, where there are jewel theives and Spiderman swings down and kicks the front doors open and knocks some of them tumbling end of end. He gets fired on and he flips and climbs the walls and keeps kocking them out one by one, and the leader runs out the front door to the waiting getaway car. Spiderman sees this, runs out and notices that the leader of the jewel gang has planned for him. He pushes a button on a remote detonator and an explosion rips through the bank on one corner and the store on the other. He thinks he can make his get away, and smiles at webhead as he leaps in the car "go go go". The action slows down and Spiderman quickly observes the 2 corners and the getaway car , he reaches into his belt and grabs a spider tracer and flings it at the car hood as he turns away and leaps in to action (in the background the getaway car is speeding away)and he does web braces for the walls, grabs people falling out of windows, puts out fires, and turns back toward the direction the car went and you see his sense tingle and he leaps into the air after them -- the car thinks they got away and they hear a THUMP on the roof and spiderman rips the roof right off! The crooks panic and run off the road onto the sidewalk and up onto a mound of dirt from a construction crew as we again go into slow motion - its jumped like a ramp in the air at a great speed and its spinning over and over...But spiderman is again quickly looking at all options and he quickly shoots a web back toward the building off to the side which attaches, then he attaches the end to the 2 crooks, picks them up, and flings them out of the car and away while they scream and swing link a pendulum. he can now focus on the car, which is diving directly at another building. He shoots multiple webs and tries to anchor the car to slow it, which it does, and he leaps out of it and drops to the ground and when the web lines snap from the strain, the car drops like a stone, which webhead easily grabs over his head and lowers to the ground. By now, the crooks on the web line are swinging back toward him, and he grabs them, sits them in the seat, and says a snappy line to the cops who want to arrest him for what they read in teh daily bugle. Instead of this awesome action sequence, he see peter on a moped not getting paid for pizza. Later, his own spider sense doesn't even warn him of danger when the goblin is right on top of him to grab him off the same moped.

Then, I'm going to claim I've seen the workprint of a movie I already hate...that I actually downloaded it and watched it all the way to the end...and I'm going to bash that. But, wait, my work isn't done! When a final cut is reviewed, I'm going to claim I saw THAT one too, and tear it a new rusty sheriff's badge. All in the name of my fellow readers...and because if this is my opinion, it must also be yours. disclaimer: Not saying this will be good or bad movie...just that alot of you tools are full of shit and piss and vinegar because you have no clue what a vagina feels like.

look, the thing that made watchmen special (even more than the multi layers) is that moore put the incidental characters front and center<P> that was gone from the theatrical cut, and will be back in the directors cut<P> if it adds nothing, then so be it<P> but everyone must admit that it couldve been much worse<p> had fox held onto the property, they wouldve made a straight forward comic book action pic<p> zack does deserve kudos for at least attempting to make it more than that<P> although i still disagree with the choice of changing both endings, changing how rorshach offs the pedofile and allowing rorshach to regain his costume while still in prison

Harry has always espoused many of the so-called "virtues" of piracy. People seeing films from remote areas, etc. Going after the lowest lowest rung on the FOX food chain doesn't aid his "cause". Supporting him MIGHT have. It just makes Harry and AICN look like vindictive twats, pointing their fingers at FOX, giving them a "Nelson from the Simpsons 'HA HA'" moment. Crucifying some poor dolt (a truly dense one at that) to make a point just brings them down to Rothman's level. That's a more blatant hypocrisy.

i think Moore was right, Watchmen is too comic booky

    by BMacSmith

i liked the movie, but it did feel too campy in parts. Not that the comic is campy, but for some reason what works in comics doesnt always work on film. Plus the chracters in Watchmen are just copies/parodies of other superheroes. take them out of that context and they just look like bad ripoffs. <p>I have the same theory on Fantastic Four. Looks great on paper, but seeing The Thing or Reed Richards move on film just looks terribly lame. The Thing of the comics is usually drawn very stylized and even abstract. Richards can have cool poses in comics, but just looks silly in motion. Some superheroes dont work outside of comics.

    Pirating Films...

    by furzee

Before anyone starts screaming 'industry insider' let me explain that I do NOT work in the film industry. I work about as far from it as humanly possible, in the thankless and loser filled car rental business. That being said, having lived in LA for several years of my life I got to know many people involved in the film industry. Harried and hard working, low on the totem pole type people with a love for film and the passion to work in an often thankless and highly competitve industry because they simply love what they do. At the end of the day, they're film geeks, just like us. For them, piracy amounts to theft, and I can understand that. They put everything, heart and soul, into a project hoping for a return and a finished product that will get them the recognition and satisfaction that their work deserves. Sometimes that doesn't happen. The film/script/acting/directing/marketing what-have-you doesn't stand up, and they accept that. But sometimes, magic happens and all the pieces fall into place and they (and us!) have something to hold up high and praise. And most importantly spend our hard earned bucks to go see in a movie theatre or buy as a DVD. The theft of piracy threatens the very industry that we, as denizens of this site, love (or love to hate..yeah, I like me a good hater talkback too). If everyone continues to see movies and media through pirated means I fear it will fundamentaly change an industry we all rely on for entertainment, more and more inferior product down our throats as studios and all others involved see less and less of a return on their investment by marketshare beaten eroded down by their stolen product. As someone who has seen what actually goes into a project of this magnitude through the eyes of grips, PA's, sound mixers and writers I would implore anyone thinking of downloading pirated media to think twice and excersize your right not to see the movie based on reviews or the word of mouth of those you respect who have actually paid to see it. The WP saved me $25 bucks! Thank God for Piracy!

    by conspiracy

Here is the deal...if it had been GOOD, I'd have happily spent my $ seeing it on the big screen; but since it was shit...I'll pass.</p><p> I've been burned far to many times at the box office recently; spending time and money to be shown rubbish or worse...insulted.</p><p> ALL movies should be shown in low res, unfinished form before opening in the theaters...it keeps filmakers and studios honest. Or better yet..Pay AFTER you watch it...just like a restaurant. If it sucks 30 minutes in and you leave..no charge, stay to till the credits..you pay.</p><p>You HAVE to agree..Hollywood has been churing out ever worsening shit year after year. The ticket prices keep climbing, the concessions are insane..and yet the quality drops with the customer having no recourse to a refund. Worse...Hollywood KNOW they are pumping out shit...this is why openings and the next 2 weeks are so important...they have to make back the investment before word of mouth kills the take. They are like snake oil salesmen...blow into town, hawk their wares..and get out before anyone wises up a week or two later.</p><p> Piracy is the natural reaction to getting screwed...and FOX deserves no pity for churning out yet another poorly thought out, badly scripted, piss poor product.

one of the best superhero adaptations there is. I'm only saying cause I realize I talk way more about things I don't like. So I'd like to say something positive and is done right once in a while. And it was done right by me. I think being nitpicky is fine to. There is nothing wrong with healthy criticism. I like to take apart movies I love too cause nothing is perfect. That doesn't mean I hate it. If you don't want to be critical and analyze films and just watch them for name value and mindlessness then post on superhero hype instead. Those tools love everything.

The only thing I was hoping for was that it would at least be a different edit than the workprint...now that it's the same, I'm officially not gonna see this film in the theater. As for everyone ragging this guy for saying 'Iron Man', 'The Dark Knight' and 'Watchmen' being among the greatest comic book films of our time...well he's more or less right. One major thing those three films have in common, no matter how big or small any changes to characters or storylines there might be, is that they each stayed true to the source material. 'Wolverine' does NOT stay true to the source material pretty much at all! let's see...things they got right from the source material for 'Wolverine'...? He's Canadian. He had bone claws first. He got his skeleton covered with adamantium. That's about all.

They're like the blueprint of how NOT to run a studio right now. What's interesting about this is how involved they've been with the press after Wolverine leaked, but I have a feeling once the movie comes out and everybody realizes the theatrical print is just the workprint with finished effects, it's radio science. Or maybe they'll just say "Gotcha!" Seriously, they talk about how fans of the property have betrayed their trust? What sort of "trust" is there between us and them?

why can't you call it "Watchmen" instead of "The Watchmen"? Even Harry did that. Jeezus. Watchmen was a 7/10 as a superhero movie but only a 6/10 as a film generally. Why? Very inconsistent performances, adapted dialogue that at times is comical, ridiculous fight scenes. Also, the film is empty. It has no subtext. It is just a superhero film, not "Watchmen" as conceived by Alan Moore. It's "Dark Knight"-lite. End of screed.

A better Best Comic Book Film List

    by I_Snake_Plissken

    1) The Dark Knight 2) Spiderman 2 3) X-Men II 4) Superman: The Movie 5) Tie between “Batman Begins” and “The Crow” – Tim Burton’s Batman has aged horribly, and while Terrance Stamp is great, Superman II is/was a lot better when you’re a kid. Downey was perfect as Stark for Iron Man, and the movie was well made and highly entertaining, but the overall film is mediocre at best (especially the Iron Monger sequence at the end ). Single best moment in a comic book film remains Wolverine sticking the guy up against the refrigerator in X-Men II – I remember as I was watching it I thought, wow for once they got it right.

    Baci...

    by furzee

I call shenanigans on you, my friend. First off, where is this study you refer to that states pirating increases BO? If someone downloads a movie and thinks its a solid B-, enjoyable, worth seeing, but not gonna rewatch it, there is no WAY they are paying again to see it again in the theatres. That doesn't give them the right to get their money back. Just because you feel entitled to see something because it's easy to see and free, doesn't mean you have the right to take it without paying for it. Be it the candy at the check out stand, the bike left outside overnight, music or movies. it's the same thing if you take it, theft. If you don't like FOX, don't see their movies. Paint your turd of an arguement any pretty color you want but it'll still be a turd. As for your 'writer' friends that are fine with watching pirated movies, I doubt that they've ever had anything published, as they might then understand the terms 'royalties' and 'residuals' a little better and be somewhat averse to engaging in an activity thats the same as someone running off copies of whatever opus these masters of fiction have penned. Theft is theft dude.

Quite the opposite, actually. But I'll never defend it as some virtuous activity or claim that "pirating increases box office."<p>I'll also never claim (as some other tool did) that intellectual property rights don't exist for movies, music, or tv shows because "it's the digital age and everything should be shared and free and it's the providers own fault that they don't keep up with the times and prevent us from stealing."<p>I have never seen the kind of intellectual gymnastics done by those who want to believe that piracy and file sharing is a noble thing. Of course, they're the same assholes who'd scream bloody murder if someone "pirated" THEIR intellectual property.<p>Then again, how valuable could the "intellectual property" of someone who JUSTIFIES piracy and file sharing BE?

fiester - Thank you! That explains the title and the X-cast...

    by kevred

Maybe I'm the last to realize this, but now I understand that cramming "X-Men" into the title isn't just marketing help for the ignorant masses, but a tool for Fox to keep holding on to the rights to the X-Men.<p>It also explains the seemingly ludicrous insertions of the likes of Cyclops and Storm into the film, which makes no sense at all. Somewhere there's a Marvel-Fox contract that probably defines "the X-Men" as including at least those 3 characters, and Fox is doing the least possible creative work to keep to that definition.<p>Bastards.

    by kevred

...Marvel's making that film, not Fox, thank goodness. And for me, Marvel's track record so far + Kenneth Branaugh + unknown but perfect-looking young Swede in the title role = something incredible on the way. <p>No matter how crazily anachronistic Thor may seem in today's culture, I think they have to play this one straight, not self-referential. Leave the wisecracks for the Avengers movie, when RDJ can make a crack about Thor, and then they and the Hulk go toe to toe with Ultron.<p>Whew, don't know if they'll film that, but imagine...

    YackBacker

    by Droid

Well, I did call it a comic book list and AHOV was one. Superman 2 is awesome and essentially a continuation of the first one. It's brilliant on it's own, but I like to view 1 and 2 as one whole four and a bit hour flick. It's nigh on perfect. The Shadow's genius. I can understand some people's middling opinion of it, to be sure, but I loved the absolute hell out of it. Baldwin is king in that, and the stylised production design is great. And in the end, it's just entertaining from start to finish. But hey, I loved The Saint as well. Most people hate that. I saw TDK three times at the cinema (which was overkill), and while it holds up after repeat viewings (unlike Iron Man which doesn't hold up on a second viewing), what those second and third experiences illustrated is that it's deeply flawed and without Ledger's amazing performance, wouldn't be heralded nearly as much. He made that flick. <p>But this is my view, mate. I never said this THE definitive list of comic book adaptations. Just mine. For shits and giggles. Each to their own.

Furzee, piracy is the least of the industry's problems...

    by pdennett316

More competing media forms, video games, legit downloads, home cinema, bloated and overpaid Hollywood stars driving up costs with their ridiculous demands, committee producing of films, lazy writers, directors putting too much of 'their take' into adaptations, general fear of taking a risk due to above factors.... <p> THAT's the real reason the industry is in "trouble", though biggest BO take's dispute that claim. Even the best pirate copy is never as good as a legit DVD, if people like what they see, they will pay for it. Piracy isn't destroying the industry, greed and stupidity are.

I was a huge Wolvie fan in my teenage years, and I was psyched when I heard the movie was coming. I haven't seen the leak and don't intend to, but what's with all of this BS about connecting it back to the first X-Men? It's Wolverine's origin story, and the Sabretooth relationship. THAT'S the story that should have been told, narrowly and brutally, rated R. Not all of this crap with Deadpool, Cyclops, Storm...and don't get me started on Diamond-ized Emma Frost. I just don't get why they would be so bent on taking the focus away from the core Wolverine mythos.

    I'M PAYING TO SEE THIS

    by TheFlypaper

My friend downloaded the work print of Wolverine and tried to get me to watch it and I told him to fuck off. <p> Hey, don't get me wrong. I've seen my share of downloaded movies. All are ones I would never consider owning. The ones I buy are the ones I want to keep, and see in pristine condition to boot. <p> But this is different. This is (to my knowledge anyway) the first time a tentpole film has been leaked in its entirety prior to its public release. And this is the kind of shit that can bankrupt a studio. <p> I don't mind cheating "the man" of a few bucks every once in a while. Everybody does it. But two or three of these incidents happen, and before you know it the investment bankers who fund big budget movies get cold feet, and Hollywood as we know it collapses in on itself. No more Terminators. No more Watchmen. No more Potters. Especially at a time when investors are skittish to begin with. <p> I'll pay to see this because I try to see every big summer flick, and because I want to see Fox at least make their cash back after this debacle and keep making movies.

All of this noise about Deadpool...

    by Lord Elric

Is just that. With all due respect to Deadpool fans, the movie's about Wolverine. I'm concerned with how Wolverine and Sabertooth are portrayed. Everyone else is a supporting player. Doesn't mean I'm not annoyed at Emma Pool being played by what looks like a teenager, with that diamond thing she later developed. Or that I'm confused by all of the other cameos, as there seems to be more mutants here then in the last three X-Men films. Or even having Logan meeta young Cyclops(?!). But...I'm seeing a movie called Wolverine, not young Deadpool. Is there anything else that's good or bad about this other then Deadpool, who's not a major concern to me, sorry.

heres the thing, even though the movie is called wolverine, they still have the nerves to put all these other NON WOLVERINE characters in the movie, and fuck them up. its a flaw in the movie, and a smack in the face to fans. its kinda like the movie notorious, how it was a movie about biggie, they got a good actor to play biggie, but then got a shitty one to play tupac. NOW it was a movie about biggies life, but the fact is, you go out and you cast someone else so important to the story and his death, and you get a actor to play tupac, and he sucks balls and only has 2 maybe 3 short scenes.

    by IndustryKiller!

From a script to filmmaking level. The characters are shallow with no real relationships to one another. The dialogue is FILLED with hammy cliches, and there is no story to speak of. It's Batman & Robin bad.

    pdennet is correct.

    by Orbots Commander

The reason for any movie industry troubles isn't piracy. Yeah, some revenue may be lost, but it's manageable. In fact, most piracy happens with DVD piracy in Asia, but Hollywood studios will never stand up to the Chinese government. The biggest reasons for industry troubles are, as pdennet mentions above, bigger and better home theaters, Blu-Ray, streaming legit downloads in HD (that's coming via iTunes and Netflix) and video games. In ten years or less, Netflix and iTunes will be streaming first run theatrical features right to your 60-inch wiz-bang HDTV.

I wish a Wolverine movie wasn't being treated as an epic story

    by Ash Talon

I'd prefer a Wolverine solo story that's more in-line with his original solo mini-series. Logan in Japan. Fighting ninjas. <p> For a movie that's supposedly focusing on one character, there sure a lot of mutants in it. Shoe-horning in so many characters just waters it down. <p> Best comic book movies? <p> Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles=one of the most accurate and enjoyable translations yet. <p> Spider-Man: Peter stuff is good. Goblin has nothing to do for half the movie. <p> Spider-Man 2: SM scenes are good. MJ already becoming annoying. <p> FF2: I think it's fun. I like the character relationships. Sue me. <p> Hulk: everything without Nolte is pretty good. Bruce is not very interesting. <p> Iron Man: great main character, inside and out of suit. Good fun. <p> Incredible Hulk: first 30 minutes are great. Kinda lame villain brings down the rest <p> Superman 2: great fight scenes. Lois is irritation. Luthor is great. <p> Batman: first movie feels a little confined. Keaton and Nicholson are great, though. Still prefer this Joker. <p> Batman Begins: music saves it. Good use of flashbacks and Nolan-style editing. <p> Dark Knight: boring. Lack of plot. Bruce Wayne is lame and whiney. Joker just isn't funny and is omnscient. Again, music is saving grace...rythm makes it feel like the movie has a pulse when it doesn't. <p> X-Men: silly plot. No character development other than Rogue and Wolverine. <p> X-Men 2: lame bad guys (army guys...yeah). No character development other than Wolverine. I truly don't understand the love for this movie. <p> X-Men 3: has a litte action. Big fight at end is enjoyable (at least something is happening). Unfortunately, it feel like nothing else happens before it. The X-Men just sit around yapping alot, yet still aren't interesting as characters. I think that's enough. I'm done for now.

the first film came out in 2000

    by haywood

It makes no sense to make a film that ties into the back of a film that came out in 2000.. Who the hell will remember that besides fans? Who cares? Especially since we all know he got his brain back. They should have gone with a story based after he gets his memory back and if you do an origin let it be either a flash back or he finds out even more things about it, than what he remember after the X-Men films. Just start fresh and bring the character to date. Its seems to me, that locking yourself to a certain ending will really hurt this story. If they end it with the character losing his memory, its a big, why did I see this film moment.. if the character cant remember, why should the audience.

I have me a nice home theatre but I still enjoy the experience of going to the movies. However, if the time comes when movie theatres go the way of the dodo, well then I'll pony up my $$ to the appropriate party and happily pay them for services rendered. Batman Returns

    by Bootskin

I'll never understand the love for this film. It's not remotely true to any source material (if that's what we geeks are using as our barometer of "good" for a comic book movie). It's simply Burton being Burton, with someone else's characters. The Penguin turned into a black saliva spewing circus freak who lives in the sewers? The character had NO motivation for anything he did in the movie. And where the hell do circus people learn how to dismantle, rewire and rebuild the FUCKING BATMOBILE? Catwoman as an undead cat-person was just about the dumbest idea I'd seen until the Halle Berry version. I knew the movie was going to be a turd the second Batman strapped dynamite to a badguy and tossed him down a hole to blow up seconds later. Guns=Bad, FUCKING DYNAMITE=Ok. Right. Oh, and Burton? Next time you film a super-hero flick? Try going outside. Both of the Burton Bat-films look like they're filmed inside a hollowed out BJ's Wholesale Warehouse with the fucking lights off. I like the guy's movies, as long as their HIS movies. His Batman stuff, not so much.

    by Big_Dumb_Bunny

How can you make a comparison of the finished version to the workprint, ie: what you're seeing in theaters is identical to the workprint, without having seen the workprint itself? Not that I give a shit really, but you guys just don't make sense sometimes. Anyways, just want to say thanks because I was planning on seeing Wolverine in theaters based on the fact that the workprint was incomplete, however, thanks to this little tidbit of info I'll just be keeping my $10 comfortably in my wallet. Sorry Hugh, you're a kick ass Wolverine, but Fox is run by douchebag money hungry fucks and I'm not going to give them my money for putting out shit like this. Nor will I pay money to see a Deadpool spin-off or an X-Men: First Class film, just for the record. And just to throw my two cents in about Watchmen, I think it was as good as a Watchmen movie could have been. I thought it was pretty decent.

    by megatom5

After hearing that this is still an hour and 35 minute long movie I'm glad I saw the work print. And I do agree that the way they did deadpool is stupid. If they wanted to do some sort of super mutant with combined powers they should have just used Super Skrull. Lol. I don't think this movie was terrible, but hearing nothing was added makes me extremely disappointed. Like Kingdom of Heaven the movie feels incomplete in almost every way. Important story arcs aren't finished others feel unconnected. I was thinking this could be an decent movie if it had the added 20 minutes, to help flesh out the characters some more. But as it is it feels more like Last Stant, though I would still say better than that crap. I don't blame Hood, I don't blame any of the actors, I simply blame Fox studios and Thomas Rothman. I think anyone who cares about having decent intelligent films that aren't contained to an 90 minutes and a PG-13 rating, DO NOT GO SEE THIS. FOX MUST BE PUNISHED.

That's all she does. Now, go read your precious little comic books that have Emma Frost in them. Compare all the powers she has and things she does in the comics, then think about what she does in the movie. Fox makes movies with little input from its audience. I wish they would change, but they haven't. they've earn their reputation. "While most films have issues and story plots you can drive a truck through, you wont ever find films with the sheer rancid goats bladder texture of SUPERMAN RETURNS" - haha. Brilliant. Superman Returns was a textbook example of how not to make a good comic book movie. I'll never forget the movie starting with a long caption card explaining who Superman was. Hilarious.

    Too funny for words

    by Lloytron

So this guy didn't review the workprint, he just 'compared' them and reviewed the finished movie.<p>Which essentially means that he saw the workprint, waited until an official screening and then wrote his review. no matter which way you play it, this reviewer had the workprint.<p>The interesting thing is, why not just review it on its own merits? Why compare to the workprint at all?<p>Who on Earth thinks that a good review is based upon comparing it to the trailer or a half complete version?<p>This is just a lazy attempt to cover up the blatantly obvious.

Wow, Deadpool got screwed worse than Venom

    by Davidia

I just watched the workprint. I actually take back that comparison. Venom was minuted, but Deadpool was actually 100% fucked around with to use as a villians deus-ex machina. Reyonolds did decent in the first half when you see him, but man oh man when he comes out the second time...There is seriously gonna be some geek rage over this. They took one of the more beloved and well-written comic book characters and basically turned him into those samurai robots from Robocop 3 Gambit was nearly as bad as I thought, in fact his whole sequence was my favorite in the flick, the movie actually had flare and fun in it then (same thing with The Blob segments). But besides that, ya...pretty shitty movie, not as bad as X3, but not exactly lagging behind either. And the bullet in Logans brain thing is hilarious. So a bullet to his brain erases his memory. The logic in that is even if Logan could take an admantium bullet to the head, it'd be a rather surgically-precise miracle for said bullet to erase his memory. Truly terrible shit. Props to the scumbag who leaked this crap so my nerd friends can't convince me to see this anymore. And oh ya, nice double standards you're developing here AiCN. "He didn't review the workprint! It's not a review of the WP...he just blatantly compares it and references it as a point of notice, and as admitting to seeing it! But oh ya that reporter at Fox should so be fired!" Save your preaching for when you can practice it, fellas.

    I love when people say:

    by Mr. Profit

"You all are going to see it anyway!" Man listen, I live in NYC, I can't go 20 feet without some peddler selling bootleg DVD's, I have seen the Wolverine bootleg EVERYFUCKINGWHERE. So they can totally count a lot of people out come opening day. I saw the movie on a flight to California and it barely held my interest. And I'm not trying to be cool, the movie was. Jackman and Liev were good. Reynolds was good. The movie was FAIL. And no amount of post production or reshoots can fix this mess. I don't blame Fox, I blame the director and I only blame Fox for hiring too serious a director for this movie. At this point even fucking Len Wiseman could have made this and it would have probably been better than it turned out. Gavin Hood was in over his head. And finally, when "Fast and Furious" is more entertaining that "Wolverine" there is an issue there. A really fucking huge one. I felt sorry for Jackman for real. He's a good guy and a good Wolverine, but this movie is a hack's dream. Full of so much crazy shit that half the time you are left scratching your head. I don't even like hardcore sci fi, but I'm looking forward to "Star Trek" more than this.

    pretty please explain

    by Potatino

How can someone compare the something to a workprint without watching the workprint? Pretty please with sugar on top explain how that happened?? If he did watch the workprint then other reviewers here on acn should ask for Merrik to be fired for rewarding people for breaking the law and watching the workprint by giving them space on acn to and letting them use the comparison as a selling point of thier review for the final film. Either that or we are all justified in not trusting what reviewers here say and therefor not trusting any of thier reviews or opinions.

    1) The Dark Knight: what more can be said? The Batman movie ive always dreamed of. Great acting from a great ensemble cast (with the first real portrayal of the Joker imho). A good sprawling story that slowly builds tension and arrives at an awsome climax. Classy, clever direction. And adult in tone. I cant imagine many better ways to make a Batman film. 2)Iron Man: Fun, colorful, Brash, and damn entertaining. A stand out performance by the perfect Tony Stark. If I may be so bold as to say possibly the perfect Marvel adaptation. 3)Spiderman 1+2: A great one, two punch that combines chracter depth with humour and fast, colorful, and kinetic action. There are some silly/annoying things (Dunst's casting) and one can only imagine what Cameron's spidey would have been like...but Raimi did a damn fine job 4)X-2: A truly bigger and better sequal that expands the universe of the first movie, adds more depth, and ups the stakes. Jackman is a great Wolvie (even if hes too tall) great ensemble cast and acting. Just a classy movie all round.

    5) Batman Begins: possibly still the best series reboot, and a fairly influential movie now given how it started the whole reboot craze. Though maybe its not hard considering this followed B+R. Good acting, Liam Neeson's a cool Rhas Aul, and its use of flashbacks is narratively clever (but then what else do you expect from Nolan? Ok, the action is hard to follow and the villains plan is kind of silly, but as a whole it works well. 6) Hellboy 2: Funny and good action. Perlman is pitch perfect imho. The make up effects are awsome, and its just a great blast of imagination by del toro..

  • April 24, 2009, 7:22 a.m. CST

    by southafricanguy

    7) Superman: the movie: To be honest i think its aged badly, and I have always hated the portrayal of luthor here, as well as Otis. But there is no denying how epic it is, the iconicness of Chris Reeve, and that it set the template for the comicbook adaptation.. 8)The Crow: Just drips of atmosphere. Lee is really charasmatic in this movie. The action is good and violent. Plus it manages to be romantic in a non-cornball/sappy way imho. Manages to also be both creepy and haunting knowing what sadly happened.

  • April 24, 2009, 7:25 a.m. CST

    by southafricanguy

    9) The Rocketeer: A really underrated gem imho. Just very fun and old fashione din a good way. A yummy J. Connelly. Nice effects that hold up, and the only good period superhero movie as far as Im concerned.

    10) 3 way Tie between Ang Lees hulk, Superman returns and Batman returns: All controversial choices i know (but its my list damnit) Each really flawed with numerous odd choices by the various directors, but each also really tries something different. In each case there are some great things, and some really bad things, but ive found each to be intriuging enough to go back and watch a few times...

  • April 24, 2009, 7:38 a.m. CST

and here very briefly is my top 10 worst comic

    by southafricanguy

adaptations 1)Batman and Robin: An insanely stupid, camp, gay, obnoxious, and...did i mention stupid? movie. 2) Catwoman; Same as above minus the gay. But has possibly the single most ridiculous costume ever put on screen 3) Superman 3: I know many would choose 4, but 3 pisses me off way more. Its not funny, even though it tries damn hard. The villains are both pathetic and boring (nuclear man was at least entertaing becos of how camp he looked). Feels more like a tv movie...

  • April 24, 2009, 7:42 a.m. CST

    by southafricanguy

    4) Ghost rider: crappy, cheap, badly overacted, and just plain sily 5)Spawn: same as GR. In fact they seem like retarded cousins. 6)Btman Forever: A slightly less dumb, camp, gay, obnoxious, shitty version of B+R 7) The Crow 4: Words cant describe this movie. You really have to see it to believe it...

  • April 24, 2009, 7:45 a.m. CST

    by southafricanguy

8, 9, 10) X3/Spiderman 3/Blade3: all three manage to fuck up the end chapters to their respective trilogies and even manage to pull down the quality of the previous movies just a bit due to their shittiness. All hugely dissapointing, and just complete wastes. We can only ever imagine what could have been...

    Underrated comic book movies

    by Harold The Great

Punisher War Zone, Batman Returns and The Shadow. (I know the shadow started in radio, don't care). Those movies had balls to be just as insane as their original counterparts. Punisher - ridiculous over the top parody of movie/comic book tough guys, Batman Returns - nightmarish fairytale, exploring Batman through it's villains, and The Shadow - they had the balls to make it a period piece. Those are three cool movies.

I didn't think the Spirit was going to be THAT bad.

    by knowthyself

But yes. Its that bad. WOW...at one point I was just listing everything Miller did wrong. Its pretty staggering how bad some of it really is. And at times you can see somewhere hidden inside of it..is a campy, funny, light hearted cartoony take on dark comic heroes. But for every tiny moment of cool..their is far too much crap. <p> The biggest problems...the guy they cast as The Spirit has none of the charm or comedic timing required for the role and Scarlett Johansson..I've never seen an actress care LESS. At least when Samuel L. Jackson collects a check he gives you SOME kind of entertainment for your money. She is a waste I dread to think of her in Iron Man 2. Their are so many scenes improperly blocked. <p>Characters just TALK TALK TALK TALK TALK while they WALK WALK WALK or stand still. Miller forgot that directing and writing are two different things. Their was some dynamic camera work but something tells me those weren't his idea. Everything is just so static. Like a Kevin Smith film, but at least smith admits his directing is bland. <p>Miller tries so hard to emulate Sin City and I think it proves that Sin City was no fluke because Spirit failed at everything that film did so well. Heck even the campy performances in Sin City are fun to laugh at...in The Spirit they are just depressingly sad

Or is it the kind of let down a failed rock star has lamenting the McDonald's cash register picture buttons?<p>Perspiring minds want to know...?

Give me a fucking break. I saw Wolverine and it sucked ass. If you aren't some studio puppet and really did love Wolverine as much as you say you do, please feel free to go see it a few hundred thousand times in the theater to make up for all of us who aren't going to waste our time and hard earned money on this abomination.

    by TheFlypaper

Yeah I work in the biz. I work in CGI and FX. And you know what? My job depends on movies and television shows being FINANCIALLY VIABLE. I don't care if a movie tanks because it's shit. If Wolverine is bad, then it deserves to disappear from theatres after only a week or two. But the moment downloading workprints of movies before they're even given a chance to succeed or fail on their own merits becomes acceptable, then everyone in that food chain from the executive producers to the guy selling popcorn is out of a job. And if being concerned about that makes me a plant, then water me and leave me out in the sun. ;)

Deadpool isn't dead, anyone read comics anymore?

    by hellnback

so deadpool is played by two different actors in the movie. ryan reynolds and some other guy at the end when he becomes weapon XI. deadpools powers were changed in the movie but he still has the fast healing, and teleportation. so he obviously has the ability to connect severed limbs back even heads. or he just grows it again. there was a time deadpool would regrow cut off parts. so this is how a deadpool movie can be made, cuz he can't die. he's already been killed off like 3 times in the comics. as for the movie well it should have been expected that fox would try and lie that we hadn't seen the final version.

I don't care what people here say. You guys are all notorious haters. And if I went by what people say on this site, I'd never see a movie because, by Talkback standards, nearly every single movie ever made sucks donkey dicks. I've been a Logan fan since the mid '80s and dammit, I'm seeing this movie and I'm probably going to see it multiple times. So fuck everyone who whines/bitches/cries/complains about ever single goddamn movie. You must lead miserable suffering lives.

Hey, I'm sure between opening weekend, DVD, overseas and cable TV sales your movie will be profitable. But it will still be a shitty movie. and I prefer to use Yahoo, there really aren't many reviews out on the Wolverine movie from credible sources at this point. I have read a few, one from comicbookmovie.com who says it is in general a good movie with flaws. He likes Ryan Reynolds and he likes Kitsch as Gambit and the action is pretty good. Then there is another good review at reviewboard.com who gave the movie 4/5. The fact still remains, and I pointed it out in a rather pointed way earlier, that the haters on AICN way out number the moderates and it's no secret that the haters love to hate a movie. I genuinely *like* movies and it's not in my generally sunny nature to spew hatred toward any movie, probably because I understand all the work that goes into them that I can at least appreciate that. There are some movies that I'm on the fence about that get bad reviews (I personally like Rotten Tomatoes that gives you an overall glimpse of 100+ reviews for a film) and from those collective poor reviews I will stay away or wait for the DVD/Blu-ray. Then there are some films, like Wolverine, where I am a long time fan (long long before a movie was ever thought of) and I'll see it not matter what and since I'm lucky enough that I don't trudge through a 9-5 job, I'll check it out during a matinee. Terminator Salvation is that kind of movie for me, too, I'll see it no matter what. Star Trek is a movie I'd normally skip, but because it looks good, I'll check it out. ause it looks incredible, I'll see that one. So pea brain or not, everyone has their movies that they're going to see no matter what.

Do you actually read the WORDS in a post and THINK about what they mean? I defended a comic book character...so yes, I am a comic geek. But to call some people out for being "haters" when they likely haven't gotten the relevant information to make a judgement, i.e.: having actually seen the flick, that doesn't make me a hypocrite. It doesn't mean I'm not a geek or whatever. jeez, you kids need to come up with something better if you want to actually put me in my place...like some relevant facts...rather than try to look cool by calling someone names. BTW, it doesn't make you cool. Also, BTW, I have not seen this movie and do not have a solid opinion on it. I will wait for someone I trust to tell me what they saw, or I'll watch it myself...not listen to faceless basement-dwelling zit-plagued virgins who are angry that the world doesn't notice them.

    by TheFlypaper

Well that's fine. Say Hollywood as we know it caves in. Everyone from production all the way down the line to the theatre people lose their shirts. We're all out of work. <p> What do you think happens then? Well, the first thing that happens is a few talented people get together to start a filmmaking co-op. Sure it might be small, but if the put out a few good films they will make some bank. <p> Before you know it, they take the fruits of their success and bankroll other people's films and - oh - guess what? They just became a studio. <p> So then - just because of the overarching rules of economics - a few of these films do well because they appeal to a lot of people, and a few of them tank. Before long, the people who run the studio begin to learn what works and what doesn't. What will virtually allow them to print money and what will send them to the poorhouse. And eventually they're focus-group testing everything they touch to make sure it appeals to everyone under the sun. And welcome to Hollywood 2.0. <p> Face it dude, Hollywood is the way it is today because it's a BUSINESS. No matter the vertical, every company wants to make money. It's at the number one position on their mission statement. Show me a company that doesn't make money and I'll show you a company in bankruptcy or complete insolvency. <p> So, after all that, why would you want Hollywood to fail? Why burn down Rome today if tomorrow you're just going to rebuild it again. <p> (and don't say we can rebuild it differently, because we can't. Capitalism is capitalism. Market forces are market forces. Period.)

    by Crooooooow

I don't know why everyone enjoys being assed raped by this movie. Maybe it's all the secret homo love they shared for Ledger. Maybe it's because Harry and all the other WB shills told you too. I just don't know. It's a crappy movie where every single major character refuses to act the way they should. The Joker's suddenly some kind of crusader for chaos instead of just being batshit insane. There's no way he would have let both those boats go at the end. They should have both exploded if no one pushed the button. Batman's using guns on his vehicles again. WTF! Why is it so hard for directors/producers/writers to get it through their fucking brains that Batman does NOT use guns. Not personally, not on his bikes, not on his special bat underwear. It's a huge part of his psyche. His parents were killed by guns so he has an aversion to them in all their forms (as well as once being prohibited by the CCA). Hopefully, they'll pull their heads out of their asses next time and actually make an enjoyable film.

Best superhero movie - HERO AT LARGE

    by Max Meanie

...later ripped off as the basis of KICK ASS. Don't believe me? Rent it. Most realistic depiction of a real life superhero. By the way, ORIGINS isn't a Wolverine movie, it's X-Men 4. Only the studio geniuses behind this mess could take an interesting character like Wolverine & decide it needed 30 other mutants to make a movie. And then ignore any continuity to have it fit with the other films. And why should anyone "seriously" care about that? Because the cameos in ORIGINS depends on a working knowledge of the other films. That's intentional.

not that it wasnt a good movie...it was<p> but nolan didnt make a batman movie...he made a cop/action movie, with some overtones about the war on terror and shoved batman and the joker into it...and it wasnt really the joker...for as noted, the joker is an insane sociopathic killer...his purpose is not to make others into him...his purpose is to kill and wreak havoc...and have a good time doing both...and yes, the real joker wouldve made sure that both those boats blew up...no matter what

    by Crooooooow

Yes he did use guns in the comics but to say it was for many years is a stretch. The Comics Code Authority drew the line with it after the issue of Batman fraggin vampires with a pistol. Since Zero Hour though none of that shit ever happened anyway so it's very easy to say Batman never used guns.

Wolverine to have multiple hidden endings

    by Thanos0145

Firstshowing.net is reporting(remember when AICN did this)that at an advance screening in LA, Gavin Hood said Wolverine will have hidden multiple secret endings on different prints and theaters will be showing different versions. The writer of the article stated the ending he saw had Deadpool in it.

where's my Strontium Dog movie, dammit!

    by Ultron ver 2.0

I just watched the Hulk vs. movies last night....damn did Thor get an asswhupping..it was actually hard to watch as Hulk kept pancaking his ass while Thor was unconscious. As someone mentioned earlier, the Wolverine portion was great....true feral rage, and great Deadpool dialogue.

    by Bjornegar

it still kicks WATCHMEN's wussy a$$. <P> Hulk poodle > tiger with long blue ears <P> CGI Hulk > CGI flaccid penis <P> HULK's ridiculous ending > DARK KNIGHT's ridiculous ending <P> You know it to be true, but it's okay if you don't want to admit in front of your poser friends. I know how important it is to fit in.

Crooooooow:Batman recently used a gun in Final Crisis#6

    by Thanos0145

Then was "killed" by Darkseid's Omega Beams. The batpod's guns are used to blow things up, not kill people. He killed people by starting the fire in Ras al Ghul's sanctuary, and letting Ducard die on the train(Batman sabotaged the controls).

dark knight had a ridiculous ending? ...what? you mean batman being the badass hero and gordon narrating that he is and then batman riding off on his batpod to that badass inspiration music?

    Make mine, WOLVERINE!

    by LastBoyScout

I still think it's gonna' be good. Even with this bad hype. Even with Emma Front being in diamond form and even with no real costumes. I think it's great that they've included the whole part when he was a kid and his cabin scenes with SF. I'm surprised at how much they've kept in from the comic. Yes, a lot has been comprimised. Sabertooth doesn't look bigger than Wolvie and he doesn't even have blonde hair. I think it still looks like a fun kick-ass movie. It's up to the actors and film crew to really bring it. I don't think it's gonna' be as bad as everyone this is. Can't wait to see it. Make mine, WOLVERINE!

You Comic Book Geeks Better Show Up!

    by Rebeck2

And in droves! Because if this movie bombs or does any less than what it was expected to do at the Box Office, we're all in deep shit. You will see the studios go to WAR against the internet. They may not be able to stop piracy, but they'll crack down on everything from script PDFs to early screening reviews. Pray that WOLVERINE does well...

Wolverine Leak Same as the Released Movie

    by danielkennedy74

Obviously Hollywood can't sustain this type of leak, but their approach, mainly deterrence and threats, doesn't seem to be working on its own. Here is an alternative, moving to the preventive maintenance side: http://praetorianprefect.com/archives/2009/05/wolverines-nemesis-data-leakage/
