The Trade Papers Are Raving About J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK!!

Published at:  Apr 23, 2009 3:24:31 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

I was up way too late last night watching “Shore Leave,” with Jim Kirk beating the tar out of Finnegan - and Spock mocking the puny humans’ need for recreation. What a great show!!!

Today the trades have their reviews up for J.J. Abrams’ new movie and, as maybe the only AICN staffer who hasn’t yet seen the movie, I’M ALL WORKED UP, BABY!!

Variety says:

… Abrams' smart and breathless space adventure feels like a summer blockbuster that just couldn't stay in the box another month. Paramount won't need any economic stimulus package with all the money it'll rake in with this one globally, and a follow-up won't arrive soon enough. …

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… Paced at warp speed with spectacular action sequences rendered brilliantly and with a cast so expert that all the familiar characters are instantly identifiable, the film gives Paramount Pictures a new lease of life on its franchise. … The boxoffice should beam up enormous returns. …

I can’t wait till May 8 to see this!!

It's been a long three years. Find my first, April 21, 2006, post on this matter here.

Yes, I am looking forward to seeing this, in Imax no less, but when reviews refer to "all the money it'll rake in ", and "The boxoffice should beam up enormous returns.", I have to remember its Variety and Hollywood Reporter, where box office matters and quality is number two.

    Speaking of trades..

    by johnny rocket7

I read an article today in an advertising trade mag that Wolverine was going to punk Star Trek at the Box Office because FOX's pre release campaign was charting 'better.' I had to smile.. the writer clearly doesn't spend any time on fan sites or really have a trues sense of the buzz factor... But because Hugh Jackman charts higher with women, Wolverine will come out on top... I think it's going to be the other way around..

In Fact..I don't give a flying fuck if Ebert his bad self jumps up and proclaims that not only is this the BEST movie he has ever seen; but that the touch of JJ Abrams contained the cure for cancer and Orci's script was so good it restored hearing to the deaf....I am STILL gonna DL this thing and preview it at home before I drop $25 bucks to see it on the big screen. ORCI and Abrams have given me an unlubed fucking one too many times to be trusted at this point.

    by stifler's mom

That's not a prediction of quality. Just an objective forecast. STAR TREK does not have the mainstream appeal of any of the other franchises. The STAR TREK brand carries a very un-hip, un-cool conotation. Like WATCHMEN it will open big, blow the fanboys away, then barely cross the $100 million mark. Just saying.

the greatest sum up of spider-man 3 ever (07 sucked)

    by supercowbell4therequestformorecowbell

    from geeks of doom.com

"It was bad enough that my left brain was working double time trying to block out Kirsten Dunst’s goofy teeth anyway, but there is no ignoring that every character’s development was being robbed by unnecessary scenes featuring someone crying. Seriously, there is a lot of $#&%*ing crying in this movie! I’m not kidding even remotely. Before you assume that I’m just being insensitive, allow me to walk you through the film a little (watch out — SPOILERS AHEAD).

Peter is going to propose to Mary Jane. He tells Aunt May. She brings up Uncle Ben. They both cry.
Mary Jane is concerned that Peter isn’t paying enough attention to her feelings. She cries.
Peter takes his psycho friend to the hospital, after his friend tries to kill him. Peter cries.
The Sandman breaks out of jail and hides out in his sick daughter’s room. He cries. His wife fights with him for showing up. They both cry. The daughter discovers he’s there but doesn’t cry, which makes Sandman cry a little more.
The clumpy cat litter man suddenly rises from the traumatic reconstruction of his entire molecular makeup. He then looks at his daughter’s locket … and cries a single dirty tear.
Mary Jane gets fired from playing the lead in what looks like Victor/Victoria. She cries.
Peter’s crazy friend remembers that his Dad is dead. He cries.
Mary Jane breaks up with Peter in Central Park. They both cry.
Captain Stacy tells Peter and Aunt May that Uncle Ben’s killer is on the loose. They both cry, before Peter yells at the captain, who looks, at that moment, as if he is about to cry. Then there’s a flashback scene where Uncle Ben gets shot. Uncle Ben of course cries. In all fairness here, bullets hurt.
Later, clumpy cat litter man will explain to Peter what really happened on that fateful night. Both clumpy cat litter man and the flashback of clumpy cat litter man are both crying.
Peter forgives the clumpy cat litter man for killing his Uncle Ben … while crying.
I don’t want to blow the ending for any of you, but trust me, there’s crying."

so trek can continue to be made with a big budget. But i dont think it will open huge or beat Wolverine (though I think wolvie will drop big time when bad reviews and word of mouth gets out). Lets remember guys this is Trek. It still has a very big geek/dork/nerd stigma, and thus many people just wont touch trek with a 10 foot pole. It simply never has been seen as cool by the mainstream. And lets not forget guys..trek is not well known globally, its not a globally known brand name as it were. Which makes its internatonal b.o a mystery...

The crew looks thrown together and Pine doesn't look like he's competent enough to lead a full bar crawl let alone a starship.

    by leafar the lost

Remember the guy that used to run the Star Trek franchise, Ricky Bermen? Has anyone seen him lately? I used to make daily posts calling for his termination, but now I am concerned for his well being. Yes, his stupidity destroyed Star Trek, but it also allowed someone like JJ Abrams to come in and resurrect it. If Rick Bermen actually did a good job, then we would be seeing another Star Trek: TNG movie. In an odd way, I am glad that Rick Bermen was such a horrible, inept, and generally pathetic producer. I image that right now he is in his bathroom, curled up in a ball on the tiled floor, covered in feces and mumbling words in Latin. I just hope he is okay with this.

  • A monumental let-down that screams cash-in. The pirate reviews are tepid at best, outright lousy at worst, and nearly everything I've heard of it makes me less interested to see it. Of course, my anticipation level started pretty low--I generally ignored the news on it until I saw the first preview, and then, that last shot of Wolvie jumping off a flying/exploding car onto a hover helicopter in mid-air, just screamed "nuke the fridge."

I've never been remotely interested in the original series, was bored to tears whenever my mom (big Trekkie) watched the one with Patrick Stewart, and the one movie I've seen b/c my dad dragged me to it (was it "Insurrection"?) was pure torture to me. And while I enjoy Lost and loved Alias, I do think JJ Abrams is overrated (Lindelof is the reason Lost rocks, and M:I-3 was just ok). But for some reason...I'm really looking forward to this. I like the cast and the cinematography (not to mention the obviously bigger budget) but mostly, I can't remember the last time a summer blockbuster looked this FUN that didn't involve superheroes or Pixar. It's...refreshing. I just hope the script by the Transformers guys isn't too dumb for me to enjoy it. I know Trek was supposed to be the more intelligent space franchise, after all.

    Mass Appeal=Big Box Office

    by genrefanboy

I bought my ticket over a month ago for the opening day. But I doubt if all the ST fanboy/girls in the world could give any ST movie a mega opening. This will live or die on its appeal to the under 25's if its going to be a big hit. ST11 may be a good movie but even Wrath Of Khan would not be a megahit if released today as the culture is different now. Thats why the trailers/marketing are targeting that younger audience as Paramount know its the only way it can live long and prosper. Star Trek has a lot of barriers to overcome, most mainstream audiences view it as childish sci-fi which ran forever on TV (courtesy of Berman & friends). I think it will open solidly but unspectacular then drop off around 55-60% and slowly fade into obscurity around mid-late June. Overall I would think it could gross worldwide around $375-400M split 50/50. $100M more if it can capture the kids & teenagers. This will probably do similar numbers to Die Hard4/Superman Returns (both 1980's franchises as well). Paramount must be a little worried though as the turnout for their recent publicity world tour was not exactly huge. At best they got a few 100 fans show up (except for Germany).

    Indy4 Is Great!

    by genrefanboy

Why people hate it is beyond me. It contains all the same ingredients of the other 3 movies yet many dislike it due to childish Lucas hate payback from the prequels. Spielberg is the one who wanted many of the unpopular elements including the Fridge yet he gets a pass.... Lucas wanted Aliens & the 1950's everything else was Spielberg. I think it stands with the other movies and Ford gave an astonishing performance. If he dyed his hair back to how it was in 1989 (Spieberg wanted him to but Ford rightly refused!!) you would struggle to see the difference in the scene where Indy is talking to Mutt in his library about the Skulls from the Indy3 scene with Marcus/Donovan before they leave for the adventure. Spielberg was also the holdout and reason it took so long as Lucas was ready to go in 1996 but ID4 made SS nervous so he never committed to the project until 2003 then it tooks them years to get a script they all liked. Hopefully SS listens to Lucas more next time (SS loved the Darabont version script which was utterly terrible and not a worthy Indy story) and Indy5 is within the next 3 years (quite likely if Lucas can find an semi-real artifact for Indy to chase). If box office is a real indication of franchise popularity then Indy still has it as internationally he was the biggest movie of 2008 (yep even beating TDK outside NA in the global theatrical markets by $1m).

Star Trek: The Box Office Analysis

    by media messiah

Certainly, whatever the final opening weekend box office numbers, or the final numbers of the film's take, it could have always been much bigger. The point is, if Matt Damon was hired for Trek as young Kirk, and William Shatner reprising his role as the older Kirk, the box office numbers would be drastically higher. Hell, I would have even been happy to see Damon as Christopher Pike, but no, we can't have that can we Paramount and JJ? No, I mean, Matt Damon is only the star of a blockbuster franchise...with enormous cross demographic appeal among mass audiences, world wide, but who cares about that, right? The chance to expand Star Trek's audience well beyond science fiction audiences, or its normal fan base, was huge, but Paramount threw that chance away...eyes wide shut! Now JJ Abrams is falsely claiming that Damon turned down the role as young Kirk, but months ago, also according to Abrams, no such offer was ever made to Damon, by him or by the studio??? Which is revisionist history, Abrams then...or now? This is nothing but last minute desperation in terms of film marketing/promotion to try to raise the profile of the film among the public by selling it as a film that Matt Damon was considered for. Could it be that tracking numbers for the film are soft?As for Shatner, his career rebound with the Priceline ads, Boston Legal, and a number of Emmys for that latter role, would have been priceless for the new Trek with regard to selling tickets, but agin, Paramount and Abrams couldn't have that? Why pay Shatner 5 million for his salary, for 35 million extra, or more, opening weekend, in return, in ticket sales, thanks to his appearance in the film. He has built a new legion of fans that are diverse demographically, fans that would have flocked to see this film out of curiousity, if nothing else, and others, just to support him, as this would have been an event. Many of Boston Legal's fandom, in addition to Emmy viewers, and those who enjoy Shatner's Priceline pitches, would never dare see a science fiction film or have anything to do with Star Trek, including many older and younger women, but they would have shown-up in the millions to see Shatner in the new Trek film, however, Paramount and JJ Abrams are too invested in a campaign against Shatner to see that--the reason I suspect that Shatner did not win the Emmy for his last nomination, as Paramount influenced a large share of the vote. Now, that agenda has been further reflected in Paramount's bashing of Shatner in a CSI episode based on Star Trek which aired last week, one that featured a Shatner like character who was sleeping with his female fans at sci-fi conventions, and a female producer, etc., while secretly recording his sex sessions via a hidden camera on a touring set of the ship's bridge. Oh, and he was also stealing ideas from a book author, in addition to threatening women, he was also a sex addict, a misogynist, a women beater, a loud mouth, arrogant, and a all around low-life. What a way to say thank you to William Shatner? Clearly, if you didn't think his not being cast in the new Star Trek film wasn't personal, now you know otherwise. The new Star Trek will make money yes, but is will allso lose the hundreds of millions of dollars extra that Matt Damion would have brought to the box office, the additional cross demographic he would have given Star Trek by drawing in all new audiences who would never willfully watch a Star Trek film, and much of the same is true of Shatner's present value...now all lost, ironic, since JJ Abrams help to create the series Lost? Paramount's execs are about as reckless as the people running AIG, in terms of making executive decisions, when it comes to getting the most bang for one's buck, including the money of their own film investors.

and i always go into a movie wanting to like it, some love. My dislike for Indy 4 has fuckall to do with "Lucas hate" or payback for the prequal trilogy (which for the record i have mixed feelings towards...like some things, love a few, hate many other things..) I wanted to love a new indy movie, and was looking so forward to it. Firstly, i blame spielberg equally for whats wrong with it, Spielberg gets no free pass from me dude. Now that thats out the way...i dont like indy 4 because of the flat out goofy/cartoonish/retarded moments like the fridge incident, Shia on the vines with the monkeys, and the fucking ants which all looked really bad too becos of bad use of cgi. U can tell me all day how it s no different from the other indy movies, but i think you may be trying to convince yourself. The other indy movies were ridiculous sure, but they always walked just the right line between that and suspension of belief. That is not the case with all the afore mentioned scenes in Indy 4. I agree with you about Ford, he was great and credit to him for making the effort. And yes he looked good for his age. But Indy 4s shittiness had nothing to do with Ford, it was all Koepp's shitty script, and Spielberg and Lucas who gave Ford little to do, and made him mostly passive in the story, rather than pro-active like he was in the other films.

ending and how they wasted Marion, or how uninteresting the new characters were. Though I liked Spalko, just wish they gave her more to do and a better death scene. Btw...for what its worth, i really like the first half hour. Its a clever seup to the 1950s, and to Spalko, and its an unexpected begining. Also liked the references to Raiders and the last few years of Indy's life. Just so sad that it all went so damn downhill starting with the fridge.....*sigh*

From the IGN UK Review - "The film is never boring, but it never takes off in a way that is seriously exhilarating or electrifying. These days we expect our $200 million summer movies to compete with The Dark Knight and Transformers: Both are obviously very different films, but they are united in their narrative urgency and intensity. Star Trek never approaches those heights." - That does not get me excited to see this film.

I'm sorry, but Transformers has "narrative urgency"?

    by jimmay

Simply jump cutting from shot to shot because Bay is a shitty director unwilling to make the effort to work on one good shot and stick with it for more than three seconds does not equal "narrative urgency" or "intensity." Transformers and Dark Knight aren't even on the same planet, aesthetically speaking. If IGN's reviewer is saying Star Trek is less "urgent" than Transformers, then sign me the fuck up. Lesson one for a film critic: never use a Michael Bay movie as a comparison to another film unless its how much less the film happens to suck.

Without Berman, there would be no modern Star Trek to SAVE from the wreckage he's left by letting the franchise get moldy in its tupperware. Looks like JJ is exactly the right new blood the franchise needed. You know things were getting bad when Galaxy Quest was a better "Star Trek" movie than Nemesis.

    Most accessible since ST4.

    by imagin78

The most popular Trek film was The Voyage Home because it poked fun at the Trek mythos and was accessible to non-Trekkies. From all accounts, Abrams film is the most accessible installment since that one and should, in my opinion, do very well. Wolverine will open stronger(around 80-90 million). However, I see it plummeting after and struggling to get to $200 million. Trek will open to around $50-60 and have stronger legs and finish with around $250 million. Oh, and Indy 4 is a good, entertaining film. Save you bile for true crap like the Mummy 3.

    by yackbacker

In spirit, it is the most honest example of Gene Roddenberry's vision of START TREK. It's the truest sci-fi story of the entire film series. It's slow as a motherfucker in a lot of places, but the themes and "adversary" are pretty cool.

    Star Trek VS Wolverine

    by tiberius_prime

I'm betting that Wolverine will tank because of the bad taste left over from X-Men 3, and bad word of mouth once it's out, where as Star Trek will be getting good word of mouth, and fans will will do their part by dragging non-fans to see it, converting them, then they convert others and so on, plus all the flashing lights and loud noises will attract the Lowest Common Denominators.

TMP is a misunderstood gem! It's not slow!

    by zodnotgod

TMP is the only Trek film to use hard-core science-fiction as the mcguffin. I tend believe that those that hate it are just dumb sacks of shit who don't get the questions posed,"Who am I? Why am I here? If nothing else the film deserves credit for asking such deep stuff and the film is very deep, almost into 2001 territory. Of course anyone that hates 2001 is a dumb retard as well.
That score alone kicks all kinds of ass!
I won't speculate the BO as I'm not good at that, but the film will be one of the big hits of the year and it won't be from the "general Masses" but from the fans young and old who recognize a great Trek when they see it. Please stop with the "I hate Trek, but I will see this!"
    Why?
    Fucking sheep.

    Re :Orionsangels

    by real deal

Ok. I'm looking at the UK review at IGN now. " Actually the quote is :

" The film is never boring, but it never takes off in a way that is seriously exhilarating or electrifying. These days we expect our $200 million summer movies to compete with The Dark Knight and Transformers: Both are obviously very different films, but they are united in their narrative urgency and intensity. Star Trek never approaches those heights.

Then it goes on to say : " In a way, Star Trek is this year's Iron Man. Both were superbly cast, full of great character interaction and genuine humanity. But the pair were also seriously hampered by badly conceived storylines and humdrum action sequences (remember Tony Stark's rubbish fight with Ironmonger at the end of the film?) that stops them joining the likes of Jaws, Star Wars and Independence Day in the annuls of truly great summer films.

The great thing about both Iron Man and Trek, however, is that they lay the groundwork for (what we hope will be) mind-blowing second instalments. By the end of Star Trek, we have a (mostly) brilliantly cast crew in place on the bridge of the Enterprise. For Star Trek 2 (or should that be 12?) here's hoping a strong new adversary returns to threaten the Federation (wouldn't Klingons or The Borg be awesome?) -- then perhaps Abrams' promise of genuinely exciting space adventure will be fully realised. "

And of course the AU review has : " Star Trek is an incredibly entertaining film from the opening moments to the last. It nails the balance between characterisation, sexuality, action and spectacle and the pace never falters. There are moments, particularly during the more heartfelt exchanges between Spock and his family, in which you feel like you're being manipulated – but this only really occurs as an afterthought – such is the directing ability of J. J. Abrams. He will suck you into his vision of the universe and he'll play with your emotions. "

Wolverine more popular than Trek? Really?

    by oisin5199

Is this some kind of masculinity thing? I just don't see how Wolverine is more 'mainstream' than Star Trek. We're talking space porn here, people. Spaceships shooting at each other, with characters that waaaay more people are familiar with than the members of the Weapon X program. Unless we're talking about teenagers who grew up (shudder) with the X-Men films. Trek is going to be huge. If you think it's not going to beat the pants off of Wolverine in the box office, you're on crack. Not that it's a competition (well, not for me anyway). Well, I definitely want Trek to do well, and I have mixed feelings about Wolverine. I do want them to make more X-verse movies, but I want them to do them right and I want Rothman to stay away. So maybe if it tanks, they'll go a different direction or maybe sell the rights back to Marvel or something.

    by southafricanguy

TMP...well the dorectors cut anyway, which is far superior IMHO. I think the theatrical version largely deserved the criticism it got, but much of that was fixed in Wise's DC. And i like that its so different from all the other trek movies. In a way its the most adult and intellectual of the movies. But I think thats what is cool about the trek series, how different the movies can be (comedy, murder mystery, action etc..) due to trek being such a versatile concept...

And i can promise you my friend in the mainstream trek is unknown. I have yet to see trek for sale or rental in any video store in Japan, Hong Kong or Korea (and keep in mind these countries devour pop culture, especially sci-fi) nor have i ever seen any trek on tv even though ive lived in Asia for years now. My Korean girlfriend loves sci-fi, but she has never even heard of trek and has never seen any image from it. This new trek will be her introduction to trek because I cant find any Trek here in Korea to show her, and Ive tried dude. In fact, here in Kore its called Star Trek: The Begining becos as far as they are concerned this is the first trek movie. And aside from Germany and the uk, trek isnt well known in Europe.

WATCHMEN comparison makes sense in this regard:1. WATCHMEN seemed to please some of the die-hard fans, but not enough.2. WATCHMEN attracted curious newbies during opening weekend, but most weren't won over.Worse case scenario is that the same thing could happen with Trek. On the other hand, as has been said in other TBs, it could be the CASINO ROYALE of Trek.

I'm not sure which of the 5000 Blowjob reviews it was here on AICN....but ONE of them made mention that there is a closing voice over..and that Voice would be a hit with the fans...which means it is either Stewart..or Shat. Seeing as how TNG are overly represented in the comic book, and putting them in the film would be overkill....that leaves only Shatner.Call it a guess...a hypothesis...what will you. But I'd put money on Shatner doing that voice over...especially given all the press given to the fact he wasn't it in earlier. And if it IS NOT Shatner...Then FUCK YOU JJ Abrams...FUCK YOU HARD in your ungrateful shithole you lousy pompous prick...Shatner IS Trek as much as Nimoy is...and for that alone you owe it to Bill, as the fucking professional and living legend he is, to put him in your film.

I'm Sorry, What Makes This News?

    by vwantsrevenge

So some Hwood papers like a movie. Okay... So? This is the same shit this site and some others tried to do with WATCHMEN. Save it before it opens. As readers we all know Harry and Tim got Paramount to screen STAR TREK in Austin early and now as thanks, I guess, they have to pimp out the movie like it's the second coming. Fuck, could you sell out a little more?

Why can't the flick survive or fail on it's own fucking merit? Why do you have to pray at the altar of JJ to somehow sway people into believing it's gonna be a classic? And besides, kinda preaching to the wrong crowd since most of the readers of THIS site have made up their mind one way or the other about when or if they're seeing it. I hate this shit. This is NOT news of any kind. Cool or no. This is the exact OPPOSITE of what many film blog sites are trying to do with WOLVERINE. Instead of firebombing it, like WOLVERINE, they are basking in it like CLOVERFIELD which was pretty damn mediocre. Stop trying to sell tickets to your friends' movies. Same with BASTERDS which I'm sure is gonna get the full on blowjob ass kiss extravaganza on this site later this year. Can't wait to read the MULTITUDE of reviews here that trumpet it as Tarantino's APOCALYPSE NOW. Yeah, right.

    by kwisatzhaderach

about Crystal Skull - Lucas raped my childhood, Lucas can't write, Spielberg has lost it, it got terrible reviews, waaah waaah, waaah. Well, Lucas didn't write it, he just came up with the story idea. The (admittedly weak) screenplay was by David Koepp. And it actually got really good reviews from most people. And was the second highest grossing film of the year worldwide behind The Dark Knight. I love how fanboys take their delusional notions of how they felt about the film and try to turn it into some kind of universal truth. The truth is the film was a massive hit. And, despite its flaws, I really enjoyed it. At least Spielberg knows a thing or two about filmmaking, unlike the hacks i've had to endure for the last 13 years.

    by gabba-uk

even the reviews I've read that had issues with the film have considered them minor and not damaging to the film as a whole. Can someone please point me to all out hatefest on the movie. All these great reviews its getting give the impression its perfect, which of course nothing is. It would just settle me down and help keep my expectations lower to find someone who hated it. And they need lowering. I'm so jazzed up for all things Trek right now I just spent £70 pre-ordering the blu-ray box set of the first 6 films and didn't have to think about it in these uncertain times!!! This could get expensive...

dude, i dont hate Spielberg for indy 4, he is still one of the greats no matter what. However we will have to agree to disagree about Lucas, who for me has lost all credibility and any talent he once had. I m happy for you that you enjoyed it, wish i could have. Im sorry (and this is just my subjective opinion) but Koepp's script, like most of his scripts, sucked. And there were just too many cartoon moments for me. As i ve said i liked the first 30 mins, i thought Ford was damn good, and Spalko was a cool villain (in concept anyway). But Lucas's idiotic ideas are all over the film, and why was Shia in te movie? Did it really need him?

Or did NewKirk go all surly and stuff on him, and say, "I'm not going to warn you one more time, pal..." but Finnegan says, "I'll be believin' it when I sees it, boy-o!" But then Kirk says, "Okay, but don't send the doctor's bills to me!" and unleashes a ton of whooooopass on him, with lots of shaky-cam and quick cut edits so you can't see what the fuck's going on, then Finnegan's on the ground bleeding, saying, "Is that all you got, laddy?" but Kirk says, "Stay down, buddy." but Finnegan tries to get up anyway, and NewKirk does a wicked awful leg sweep and Finnegan's knocked out fucking cold, and as Kirk's walking away, Uhura's panties are soaked, and he says "Top o' the morning, *that*, bee-yatch!" and they play an awesome rap song, or maybe the Kill Bill Electric Samurai song...

That this film will be shiny and 'exciting' and make loads of money because morons will go and see it based on the fact that there was a shiny and exciting ad on TV for it. It's written by two morons and directed by someone who thinks shaking a camera about is how you make action movies. It'll be a mindless two hours of whiz-bang razzle dazzle disguised as a good film. No intelligent debate will follow it but the creators will get the chance to churn out more vacuous pish based on its box-office success.

    by bythehairofsanjaya

How wrong can one person be about the CSI episode? The character you described was the PRODUCER not the Kirk Character. He was the anti-Roddenberry, not the anti-Kirk. The whole point of the character and the fans hate for him was that he dared change the mythos. It wasn't a slam on any existing Trek character. The CSI lab guy represented the Kirk character throughout the episode which treated the Kirk persona very simpathetically. You are completely, utterly wrong in your assessment and logic here.

Bythehairofsanjaya: That Was An Attack On Shatner

    by media messiah

That character was styled after Shatner, not Roddenberry. Although both men were alleged to be sleep arounds, it is clear that the character on CSI was a shot across the bow of Shatner, as it was patterned after the many rumors that have dogged Shatner for years, about sleeping with fans at Star Trek conventions, and being an arrogant loud mouth on the set of the series. Roddenberry was never accused of those things...and we both know it.Now, the character, within the character, on the show...as played by a CSI actor, was depicted as being a great guy, as the Kirk character. I am not discussing him, and you know it, I am talking about the offset jerk who likes to beat women and sleep with fans...who was murderered as a result of his Bob Crane like lifestyle...and that was aimed at Shatner, himself, the reason why they didn't call the show Star Trek, but came up with a parody title for the series.

So the new Supreme Court of Star Trek wants the next Star Trek movie to be informed by the fans?

Assuming that isn't total bullshit (which we all know it is) how's this for an idea? Come up with a creative way to have a big, important adventure that lets your alternate Trek universe interact with the original Trek universe.

Of course your excuse that "The audience would be too confused," is already ringing in my ears. But that won't stop me from suggesting such a cool idea to you. Pity that you and the Paramount suits with their MBAs don't understand.

You aren't the only one who feels the way you do. It would be one thing if people began to appreciate things for the same reason you do, but that's not the case here for Star Trek.

The audience is getting a safe, dumbed down, hilarious CGI explosion that is indistinguishable from every other safe, dumbed down, hilarious CGI explosion.

Just remember that the people who hated Star Trek before will still hate Star Trek now. It's just THIS MOVIE that they'll have a hard-on for. You'll never catch them watching the old stuff...just the big, expensive, shiny, übersexy JJ stuff.

    BORG!

They could have been attracted by Nero's ship, the Narada, and have come to investigate, meaning we get Borg a hell of a lot earlier then in the old time-stream.

I'd have liked some DS9 movies and a 25th century series set on a colony in a recently discovered area of space, (the galactic boundary, if you will), but I guess that particular starship has launched, cracked up and exploded.

I like how Goldsmith created that great theme for a small scene. Most composers wouldn't have bothered.

    Yes, Goldsmith's work on TMP

    by fa_tass_dinomolester

was among his best. Although he didn't excel at transitioning from scene to scene through music the way Williams helped propel the SW trilogy, Goldsmith's ST themes really elevate the franchise.

It's not about being easily entertained. I obviously don't care as much as you or don't take it as personal as you have. I don't think Indy 4 effects the character in any way. It's just a case of me being ok with it and you not liking it and two directors pissing you off.

southafricanguy, I'm talking mostly Europe and Australia/New Zealand, they love Trek, I'm surprised Asia hasn't flipped for it. I'm sad to hear they haven't heard of a 40 plus year old sci-fi property. I wish I could say the same about Dr. Who....anything to forget that shitbreak.

about Crystal Skull - Lucas raped my childhood, Lucas can't write, Spielberg has lost it, it got terrible reviews, waaah waaah, waaah.
This last sentence especially speaks volumes about the posters on this site and also Chud.com- the kryptonite of joy.
The only movie site that promotes and exploits movies they hate, unless its to their advantage.

The Klingon battle cruisers scene portrayed space with size and scope. The new movie probably won't capture that largeness. Everything is getting too small, too inside, too much like a coffee shop.

    Skull Love.

    by imagin78

Overall, I really enjoyed KOTCS. IMHO, it is better than Crusade. All the Indy films are goofy to a certain degree. They are based on serials after all. Yes, Marion is underutilized. Yes, there are too many supporting characters. Yes, the rubber tree and Tarzan-Shia are bit much. However, the three action set-pieces are terrific. I think Cate makes a good villain. I think Shia is very good as the son and Harrison was as good as ever. I never understood the problem with the alien theme. I think it fits perfectly. Both Raiders and Crusade have anti-climactic endings. All in all, I thought it was an improvement over Crusade which, except for Connery, felt like a repeat of Raiders.

we may have misunderstood each other. But dont worry about trek being so unknown in Asia, its probably a good thing...no preconceived ideas (i.e the dork stigma trek has). Also, Trek is being heavily promoted and advertised here in Korea. My Korean girlfriend is really interested in seeing it based on the trailer she has seen. Cant wait to introduce her to Trek:) I think Trek could become popular in Asia thanks to the ground work this new movie is about to lay...

Whilst I don't mind a battle against a "big bad" like Khan, or Klingons or some Alien race. Am keen to see some internal squabling, like to see the Federation when it turns on itself i.e. in DS9 final season (I think), when there were changelings in the Federation, then we got the McCarthy undertones.

If they bring back the Borg...

    by excommunicated

(great premise BTW, with the Nerada attracting the Borg's attention from across the galaxy)...

If they bring back the Borg, I'd want more of the Borg we saw in "Q WHo" and "Best of Both Worlds." The subsequent Borg episodes took the mystery away. The Borg should have been treated like the galactic boogie men. The Borg should be the thing kids taunt other children about on the playground. The Borg should be something that swoops in, fucks a lot of shit up in the most nightmarish ways possible, then swoops out before Starfleet can help the hapless colony. The Borg should virtually be a relentless part of nature. "Resistance is Futile" is a phrase that the characters on screen and the audience in the theater actually believes. "Shit, resistance really is futile isn't it? Damn!"

I also like the idea of revisiting Khan and Space Seed. Javier Bardem would be an insanely perfect choice to play Khan. It could be a mashup of ideas from Space Seed and Wrath of Khan, where instead of Khan taking over the Reliant, he takes over the Enterprise instead, perhaps forcing Kirk to have to blow up his beloved ship in order to stop the madman from killing millions of people.

Star Trek = Biggest film of the year..

    by gigol-o joe

Mark my words! You can engineer a big opening with PR and spin much like Fox are doing with Wolverine. And you can rake it in with early buzz and word of mouth if the film is any good. But to truly have a hit you need both, and that's what we have here. This film has come along at the right time and place. It has pop culture written all over it. Even the built in fan base is guaranteed to a least make its money back.X-men has nowhere near the potential inherent in Trek. Transformers was lucky first time round, but after the big robots hitting each other there's nothing left to see but Bay's bumhole, which is just not that anticipated beyond the moron crowd. Then there's Terminator. If it's any good it will be huge maybe bigger than Trek. The question mark is McG. Do you think he's pulled it off? Whichever way you read into that only time will tell. Not forgetting there's another little addition to the Harry Fucker series to cream the box office, this summer has alot of potential, but you would be stupid not to put your faith in the Trek.
