Who is the voice behind the smile of the Cheshire Cat in Burton's ALICE?
Hey folks, Harry here... Being the voice of the Cheshire Cat in an ALICE IN WONDERLAND film has always been a plum role. In many ways, it has always been the iconic role. Something about that smile and crazy zany existence that makes the Cheshire Cat... psychedelic and freaky. In the classic Animated film, the cat was voiced by Sterling Holloway. However, we've also had everyone from Richard Arlen to Telly Savalas to Whoopi Goldberg playing the pussy with the dynamite smile and cheshire grin. So who has Tim Burton tapped to voice the Cheshire Cat in his partly motion-captured 3D ALICE IN WONDERLAND?
Well, according to Stephen Fry's Twitter he is going to be the Cheshire Cat and he announced it thusly, "Playing Cheshire Cat. Smug, complacent, cheese-eating grin - moi? Walking off to studio in next ten minutes."
Personally, I think he's perfect for the part, you?

I like it
-
Either way I'm ready for this damn movie to come out dammit!
-
It's gonna be the usual Dark Tim Burton Shit he's done for years.
-
But I'm really not all that sxcited about it.
-
Lazy casting more like. Fry's had plenty of work. I have nothing against the man, I'd just rather have someone else do it.
Tom Baker for instance - he smiles like the Cheshire Cat! Very nice man too. -
Good ol Jeeves! I'd like to hear about him getting cooler parts then the Chesire Cat though.
-
I guess I'm too used to Stephen Fry being an open and friendly source of INFINITE KNOWLEDGE, but I have faith in the man to pull this off.
-
seriously, i'm guilty of being caught in so many internet fads (i'm a proud facebook whore), but twitter is one that just pisses me off for some reasoncan it just go away now?
-
Missed Opportunity.

I don't think I could be less interested in this casting or
by juansanchez
this movie in general.
-
Really i knew this months ago.
-
But can Burton still make good movies? The jury is out.
-
Fry should be fine, but I can think of loads of other actors that would be better choices.
-
and I'll whisper "no."
-
But only 'cos Fry is fucking ace. But Burton...... he's really gone off the boil for me.
-
Yar in Wondarland now baby! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-
...that came up with this one?
-
ripping off his own music?
-
Is a much better choice.
-
He doesn't twitter us all into oblivionI know this could have been one post but i pressed return by accident and theres no edit button (hint hint)
-
He should have had more plum roles in Hollywood in his youth. His series on his trip around America was ace. His voice is perfect for this, he's been doing voiceover ads in the UK for years.
-
He was great as the cat in Coraline.
-
no? why not?
-
voice talent? I'm sure Mr. Fry will do an excellent job, but I hate to see stunt voice casting just to get a "name" in the role. I liked Seth Rogen as B.O.B., but c'mon, will every animated film have a role for him?
-
This has been on Wikipedia for yonks. Love this site, but it's not as up to date as it used to be. Oh, and Rickman is Caterpillar, and Sheen is White Rabbit. Hathaway is White Queen (no relation), Bonham Carter is Red Queen and Glover is White Knave. There, that's everyone up to speed. Apparently Johnny Depp might be in it too, I'll stay tuned to aintitcool to find out who he's playing...
-
Twitter huh?
-
Fuck this trend, there's no future with twitter.
-
I'd rather watch Hannah Montana. Wait, that's not true. Still, Motion-captured 3D Alice just makes me wanna cry.
-
Oh boy, this is GREAT!!
-
His voice is practically iconic. He was one of the few reasons I wish there had been a sequel to the Hitchhikers' movie. He was perfect as the book. Though I wish he had stayed on as the therapist on Bones instead of the annoying Freaks and Geeks kid. Anyway, Fry fits perfectly with this cat.
-
...Malcovich.
-
yea, thats right, I just did a Lindsey Lohan vagina Joke.
-
Sounds good to me.
-
Are you serious, Harry? First the Emma Frost post, and then this?
-
Damn You Michael Bay

Stephen Fry is the worse possible choice to play the Chesire Cat
by leafar the lost
Alan Cumming would have been the perfect choice, but somehow Tim Burton fucked this all up. I may not see "Alice" now because of it. I'm hurt...
-
Look at his grin: http://tinyurl.com/dhzajm
-
Tim Curry would have been perfect choice for the Cat, or the Caterpillar for that matter (though Alan Rickman's in that part, which is something we can't argue with) I have faith in Burton after the brilliant Sweeney Todd, which was him back on top form. If you haven't seen it, maybe because you think musicals are 'gay' or something, please DO as it's amazing, very old-school.
-
... have tiny little uncircumsized dicks. Its almost as gay as the people who love to claim that they heard this news months ago. Not everyone has such a pointless life that they spend all day looking at every single movie news site.
-
Who gives a twitter shitter about this non-news.
-
My penis is not tiny, but it certainly has not been mutilated thank you... well apart from the titanium rod I paid someone to shove through the end of it (but that was by choice).
-
and we can all look back and laugh at how people used to say, i'll tweet you!
-
...Stephen Fry was on Bones the other night, which we never really watch, but he was outstanding. I used to follow a little Fry and Laurie and the occasional Jeeves and Wooster, he's a pretty solid talent.
-
...is actually super fucking cool. Congratulations. You passed the test.
-
Do I win something now?
-
...you do.
-
I think the prize is a nutsack tonguebath by DrBrianOblivion. He will contact you with the details!!!
-
is dead, my challenged friend
-
SHOULD HAVE PLAYED THE CAT!!!!!!!!
-
...Ive been waiting to put his smooth balls in my mouth all day.
-
I've got the power if you've got the hour. I hope you're a medical doctor - I wouldn't want to entrust my 'boys' to just anyone.
-
...and trust me it wont take an hour. I'll have your gooey extravagance blast through your urethra tube faster than you can say yawn.
-
Maybe he will do the thing with the ice cubes!!!
-
I didn't know about this casting until I read it here but I looked up more info about it and apparently this was announced back in February.
The whole cast is amazing though. Christopher Lee as the Jabberwock? I can't wait. -
swashbuckling mouse. It would be a conflict of interest for him to play a cat. ;-)
-
cause that guy is creepy.
-
He's top of my 'fantasy dinner party guest list' I could listen to his facts and stories all day.
-
And I'm glad not to know, and I don't want to change that.
-
You know, tattoos, piercings and sarcastic, rhyming attitude.Actually, I just want American McGee's 'Alice'. Piss off, Burton.
-
...Just so Stephen has someone to BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF!
-
Oh, you coy, smug little tease you, disappearing when you're needed the most!
Alice was actually a groundbreaking flame-dame. -
I can on here to scream his name and I see it already posted.
Make it so. -
at least he's from Cheshire!
-
Someone should take a crack at that. Or just adapt the Jabberwocky poem.
-
Considering this info has been on IMDB and Wiki for several months! Smooth.
-
what the hell, is this what our world has come to? Reporting news from twitter sources? whatever
-
I came to know Fry from his work on the British Harry Potter audiobooks. The man IS voice talent. He can do a ton of voices and do them great, so I have 100% faith he will do a great job here. As for the movie, I'm not sure how interested I am.
-
That grin has got to count for something
-
If you're going for UK audio book readers. I mean, he's already insane so the role wouldn't be much of a stretch. Spike Spencer if you wanna go american, for the same reason.
-
He would be an even worse choice than Stephen Fry, Pedro. I'm sorry I voted for you.
-
and why do I care? Fuck Tim Burton. He's a Mofo
-
Fuck Twitter. Fuck it right in its stupid ass. Also, if Fry's VO work in Hitchhiker's Guide and LittleBigPlanet is indicative, then he'll be a fine choice. I would only worry about him sounding too dry and/or droll.
-
Apr 23, 2009 9:35:55 AM CDT
Who says Fry can only do droll and erudite???
by yetanotherunqualifiedopinion
THIS http://www.b3ta.com/links/The_best_thing_weve_ever_made
PROVES OTHERWISE! -
I thought Burton totally had Johnny's weiner in his mouth
-
Stephen Fry is a friggin genius.
-
Weeeeeeeeeeee! That is all.
-
Great actor - underused, for certain. Go Footlights!
-
I think whoever suggested Tom Baker as the Cat is a fuckin' genius!!! Awesome voice and a cool guy!
-
...is this without one mention of Christian Bale, or a post by DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD?
I'm just sayin... -
either would have been good
-
..before I read the article. Excellent choice. Although - rebelpig's suggestion of Johnny Vegas - now that could be really interesting (would either be fantastic - or a completre trainwreck)
-
The Eurythmics dude as the caterpillar.
-
If I'm not mistaken, Depp IS in this. I read he's the Mad Hatter.
-
but he's pretty good. :)
