Got a bunch of HD-DVDs sitting around gathering dust? WB is offering an HD-DVD to Blu-Ray Trade-In!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. When I woke up this morning there was a press release from Warner Home Video announcing an HD-DVD trade-in program called red2blu.
If you go to www.red2blu.com you can scan their titles released on HD-DVD and for $4.95 per title you can trade in your HD-DVDs for the same title in Blu-Ray.
If you're like me and jumped into the High-Def pool a little too early you can now replace a lot of your HD's with Blu-Rays. Since I don't want to drop a ton of money on a combo player and would love to free up an HDMI input, this is really exciting for me.
The biggest benefits are actually in the Matrix and Harry Potter Box Sets. I bought the HD-DVD Potter box set and haven't wanted to drop another $100 for the BR version. But instead of charging their $4.95 per title (which is almost $25 for all 5 movies), I'm paying only $14.95.
The best part is they only want your inserts, so if you still have an HD-DVD player hooked up you get to keep your discs and your cases. They just want the paper inserts sent to them.
I think it's a fantastic move for Warners. Between this and their awesome Archives section they're cornering home video awesomeness.
I just placed my order. The shipping was only $6.95 for 22 titles as well as the Harry Potter 1-5 set and Planet Earth. With tax, shipping and the cost of the upgrade I essentially spent the equivalent of rebuying 5 of the Blu-Rays.
Figured some of you out there might be interested.

I love my DVDs fuck you Blu ray.
-
Way to go, WB!
-
Universal puts out better transfer, but Warner Brothers always greenlight the movies I bother to pay for.
-
Good idea too. I have some HD-DVDs to ship off.
-
until the next format comes out. More $$$ down the crapper
-
Still said that HD-DVD "lost" - they do look pretty sweet compared to the Blu-rays.
-
....like that is EVER going to happen.
-
I'm a dick.
-
This would have been an amazing customer service gesture if only it had been made a year and a half ago. I think a lot of people, myself included have already spent the $85.00 on the blu-ray version of the Matrix set, not to mention Planet Earth and all the other single titles. This program a year ago would have saved me at least $500. Oh, well, the price of being an early adopter.
-
nice thing about working in a print shop.
-
I watched some Blu-Rays playing in several stores and while I surely won't say that they looked bad, they didn't look like the giant leap that everybody promised either. So yes, I'll wait till the Blu-Ray follow-up comes out.

Harry has chosen to trade in HD DVD for Blu-Ray. Here's why...

Maybe he'll trade Yoko's Cool Cuts for something worth reading. -
good luck to you if you have. Or more likely, bad luck - because you're living with your parents and have fuck all else to spend your wages on.
-
This site used to be better when every second bit of news was NOT about merchandize or home video offers but, you know, cool film news and stuff like that.
THE NEW WOLVERINE ACTION FIGURE IS 10% OFF!! - lame... -
I hate when people bitch and moan on a free...FREE...website. Ads drive the internet. If you want to pay to read snarky movie and TV reviews I'm sure that can be arranged.
Plus, it's not like they're advertising stuff that's totally outside the realm of all the fucking dorks and nerds who frequent this site. We dorks love action figures and the latest home video technology and collectible statues...get over it. -
Thankfully, I made the right choice from the get go and went with Blu. But this is a good deal for some of the early adopters that got stuck with movies on a dead format. If you are not into Blu-Ray and Hi-Def yet, you should be. It's fantastic and I'll never buy another DVD again.
-
I only still own 300 and hot fuzz and that's only because they're hybrid discs, a 300 BR isn't worth the 4.95 upograde fee + 6.95 shipping alone. Especially sicne I don't own a BR player yet.
-
Fuck Europeans! Cool trade in offers? Shit like that will never happen here, since we're still stuck with a system that is trying to squeeze every fucking cent out of Europe.
-
as Blu-Ray was always the clear winner of the "HD Wars".
-
until BR prices settle, or I get paid more. Aint payin' no £100 for no 5 movies. Outraaaaaaageous.
-
This is pretty cool. I waited out the 'war' but this at least shows some leadership and acknowledgment of the consumer. As for people still poo-pooing BluRay compared to standard DVD....I really doubt you haven't really seen a an adequate comparison. The leap up on Blu is fanstastic and your standard DVD collections aren't made obsolete as many players upscale nicely. If you don't have an HDTV it's not worth it I'd agree but if you do you flatly aren't getting all you can out of it sticking with standard. Hope the prices come down though on the players and the software soon.
-
A lot of people, apparently. Blu-Rays are doing very well. Maybe that's because $25 bucks isn't actually a lot of money.
-
So confident. So smug. So sure of their purchase. Hilarious. My PS3 was always going to play games that was the easiest choice when it came to HD films. That HDDVD player could be a giant paper weight and nothing else.
-
Because when I found out that HD-DVDs were getting shelved, I got irrationally upset.
-
Lets see. I'm married. Pay rent. Work my butt off. A few bucks here and there for blurays is nothing. Especially if your smart enough to buy them on amazon.com where they are cheaper. Once upon a time DVD's with thirty dollar each. Yup I was an early adopter of that too. Thanks to people like me you can now buy them for super cheap because you waited until it was cheaper and I'm sure you complained back then that VHS was just fine for you. blah blah blah.
-
were practically giving them away a year ago. My 10 year old player was getting touchy, and I needed a replacement anyway, so why not a good upscaling player with HD included. I also picked up discs on the cheap, used and discounted at Best Buy, Walmart, etc. I purchased a Black Friday BluRay because I knew I wanted TDK on the best possible medium, and for the holidays I got the boxed Matrix to start my collection in fine start. So if I have a working HD and BluRay with a selection of each...why trade?? And if you have HD titles wouldn't you HAVE a working player?? I could see selling it to upgrade, but really, how much can you expect for a used HD player??
-
I popped into this article specifically to crack the "Harry has chosen..." joke, and am happy to see someone beat me to it.
-
really worth the upgrade from DVD? Genuine question, I'm interested.

You guys are lazy this week. Sheesh.
-
I assume you're talking about an old movie, like Raging Bull or Godfather or whatever? Something before the HD age...I'd say yes. Blu-Ray outputs at 24 FPS and if you have a 120hz TV then you can tell the difference. But even beyond that...I put my Big Lebowski DVD in my blu-ray player and it looks ATROCIOUS. Although some standard DVDs, like the Rings trilogy, actually look fine when I put them in my blu-ray player
-
I have all the moneyz in the world for this because I live in my parents basement. Now please excuse me while I masturbate, eat a TV dinner, and wait for my mom to get home to cook me dinner while I watch my blueray!!!!
-
I think this could be a nice idea but personally, I think this is just a money grab on WB. They are limiting this option to only U.S. customers, which is stupid. You can only submit up to 25 titles per household. The studios dragged us into this mess in the first place, so they should foot the bill IMO. Plus, I don't want sleeveless HD DVD cases sitting around. And I sincerely believe that just like other defunct media has gone through a long life cycle (remember VHS? It just OFFICIALLY died Oct. 2008!), so will HD DVD.
-
I've got 2 HD-DVD players and have been looking for a reason to switch to blu-ray. here it is.
-
There is no new episode of 'LOST" this week. Therefore, I wouldn't hold my breath for a TB this week.
Although, Herc could put one up, for the half-assed "special" that ABC is airing, in lieu of a new episode.
...and now back to the HD DVD bashing. -
I am not bitching about the ads. Get more of them, i don't care. I'm bitching about the ads thinly disguised as "cool news".
-
Just to see what happens.
-
Most of them the price is like $3 dollars more than the standard def, but there's a couple out there where the prices are absurd. I didn't own any of the Bourne movies and figured I'd get them on blu-ray, but then the price for just three measely movies was $80. Bollocks to that.
-
Oh well at least I have money in the bank ...
-
Don't you think that movie / doc is worth pushing?
-
no more VCR cassettes! except for my Fistful of Dollars, Fargo, Fight Club and Ghost World cassettes i picked up yesterday for 99 cents! Thanks, BluRay, for making cassettes dirt cheap!
-
i remember i got the harry potter bluray set at fred meyers for 130 maybe higher and then a hour later found out it was only 79 bucks at cotsco...fucking balls.
-
Upscaling dvd players. Much cheaper players than the blu-ray ones, and they upscale the quality of a dvd image to a 1080p quality. Blu-ray = ripoff!
-
i'll stick to my 5-15 dollar DVDs
-
If you are trying to convince us an upscaler can add detail from what is written on a standard DVD to BluRay quality, then you sir, are deluded.
-
if your HDTV is 50 inches or bigger then there's no question the upgrade is worth it. Smaller than that check out a demo at a home theatre store and see for yourself.
-
If you think upscaled standard def is the same as a high def disc then you're insane. I love upscaling, but it's not the same thing as native. It's the difference between laser disc and anamorphic DVD. It's fine, but soft. Check out the UK Zulu BR or the Canadian Nightmare on Elm Street on a nice big 1080p TV and tell me that's the same thing as an upscale of the DVD.And this isn't advertising. I ran news from a press release. Advertising requires payment of some form, I would imagine. I posted it because I wanted to. I personally have been waiting for something like this to happen and am taking advantage of the offer so I figured someone else out there might, too.
-
the difference is they only stopped producing VHS movies, tapes and players very recently. No one produces anything on HD DVD anymore. More importantly VHS had a decades long thriving success pre-dvd. hd dvd never caught on before it was axed.
-
Maybe you should read up before you make anymore uneducated remarks. That one takes the cake. You can't ADD detail to an image by upscaling.
-
I concur with the prognosis.
-
For me this is not even close to worth the cost. It would run me about $100 to "upgrade" my warner movies and since there is no upgrade at all there is no point. My HD DVDs still work, my HD DVD player works, so no reason to spend that much on the same thing. If there was a noticible upgrade in audio or video I would consider it, but there is not. For those who do want to take advantage though, it is the best deal you'll find for this kind of thing.
-
Dude, I have a cracked rib. Don't make me laugh like that.
-
There are a great deal of Blue Rays discs out there that are merely upscaled and look no better than what upconvert DVD players can achieve. However, films that have been remastered and are playing on a decent HDTV can and do look gorgeous, especially on the bigger TV's. I'd say the leap in quality from upconvert DVD to BR is easily 20-30 percent.
-
Man, gotta love these assholes that just lurk on these boards only to lash out at someone. Please read my post again, I never said that the image of a dvd tops or even matches blu-ray's. I did say that the dvd format is better in my opinion than blu-ray, which to me feels more like a transition formant (laserdisc anyone?) than a real step in the next generation of video home entertainment. Yes, the image quality is better, but it's nowhere near the jump we had from VHS to DVD. And upscaling dvd players make that quality gap even smaller. By the way, investing hundreds of dollars in a format that might not even see next year (HD-DVD in it's day) is way more deluded than anything I've said so far, sir.
-
Makes movies look "70s gritty".
-
So stop bitching about the lack of a Lost talkback. And anyone who is planning on sitting this format out for the pie in the sky of 1080p downloads will have to wait at least five years and anyone saying that upscaled DVDs are just as good are complete morons.
-
There's a lot of stupid in your 02:59:30 PM post but I am too lazy to go through it all.I'll just sit back and watch everyone else tear you a much deserved new asshole for the sheer amount of idiocy contained therein.
-
Is MIND BLOWING. I've seen standard def on a 1080, i've seen upscaled and I've seen standard DVDs on my blu-ray and it doesn't compare. Of course not everyone is so into movies that they're willing to upgrade but I am.

Blu-Ray's progressing at the same rate that DVD did when it overtook VHS. Do some research. Read Digital Bits or DVDFile.
-
It would be nice if the other studios do the same or something similar. Got a bunch of HD-DVD's when they went on clearance for a few bucks. Just did this for 9 of them, they only cost $9 each in the long run. COmpared to buying them new on Blu-Ray for $20-$30 each.
-
I was talking about Hd-dvd...
-
Well some people were willing to burn cash for better quality images and didn't want to wait to find out who won the format war. I got caught up in it when Xbox released their HD-DVD drive for a relatively cheap price. I knew it was a risk, so I wasn't exactly delusional. I love movies, I'm willing to pay a little extra to get the highest quality image. Not everybody is, but that doesn't mean I should have to take shit from twerps like you for spending my hard earned cash on whatever the fuck I want to spend it on.
-
and trade them in, I can save money?
-
thanks man, that's a done deal...especially Potter, and Planet earth. That's a freakin' steal!
Thanks again!
~B -
Obviously you've never been smacked upside the head with sarcasm. Sorry to make you angry.
-
5 bucks for a Blueray is a great deal any way you slice it and considering that you can keep your HD-DVD discs and merely send in the covers, what the fuck are some of you bitching about? It's an incredibly generous offer, end of story.
-
I'm sorry, did I hit a nerve there buddy? Hell, I didn't even have to call you bad names or anything... Kinda disapointing.
-
Exactly.
I don't see a losing end to this. -
You didn't expect me to actually read past the subject of every post did you? My ADD-addled brain can't handle that.Let's come together in peace and understanding that Juliet does indeed have some great tits.
-
.. so with this offer I can essentially trade those in for an additional 5 bucks, getting me 10 dollar Blu-Rays. Not a bad deal, really. Even if it costs as much as 15.
-
Capulet? :)
-
That's the lesson du jour.
-
... AFTER the war. They were practically giving the player away, I got 7 free movies with it, I bought a bunch of hugely discounted titles that were much cheaper than their Blu Ray equivalents, it was the only way to see the original Star Trek in HD at the time, and, besides all that, it's a TERRIFIC upscaler. It was worth what I paid for it JUST for that. I'll be buying a Blu Ray player eventually, and I'll just use them both, depending on what I want to watch. The cost of the second player will be negligible, compared to what I saved on the firesale HD-DVD prices. Really, I've got no complaints about paying next to nothing for a very impressive little piece of technology that will work fine for a very long time. No need to trade anything in. And, no, upscaling is NOT as good as the native 1080p material, but it's still VERY nice, depending on the quality of the DVD transfer, of course.
-
with BluRays save a few Holy titles but when a BluRay goes in the difference is unmistakable. Upscaling does work nicely though provided you have spent some time getting your TV settings right. Have them wrong though and upscaled standard DVDs look worse than 3rd gen VHS.
-
Well, it's Sony. They can't lose.
-
5 copies of Blades Of Glory and 2 Transformers...yipee.
-
Yes...what you said. Again, I don't get the logic of trading in HD's IF you have a player, and want to "upgrade" to BluRay. I may just have to check Ebay for some cheap ass Warner titles though.
-
I imported both the matrix ultimate set and blade runner, have been very tempted to sell the lot as a package and replace some of them on my own, but this scheme has peaked my interest.
Hopefully they open an international version and accept US discs through it. -
ok im through.
-
Translation: I'm poor.I'm glad you don't want or need Blu-rays, now shut the fuck up about it.
-
Why in the wide world of sports would you want to spend MORE money and trade them in?? They look just as good as blu-ray titles and...you already own them. yes please let me lose more money on the same movie when a combo player would be less money or...gasp...I could just use the player I have. hell I'm trying to buy up old movies on HDDVD because they are dirt cheap and they look exactly the same. I already have Planet Earth, Harry Potter, and a host of other movies, why would I want to go blow my wad and end up paying $100's more just to own the same movie? I don't get it, hell a combo player would even save you move cash if you had to go that route. I could see if they looked better but wow. Throw the money away if you got it but I'm keeping this shit until the format switches again.
-
I'll do it only if I have to. My first HD-DVD player got fried exactly one year to the day of the warranty expiration and Toshiba took it back and sent me a brand new one! (With Bourne and 300 discs, too!) So far, I'm still happy with my HD-Dvd's and you can find them for sale dirt cheap. (although I have most of the ones I want now, anyway.) If I do go blu, I'll probably buy a PS3, but I have no plans to so yet...
-
I went that PS3 route. It does a great job and plays games too. The only people I can think of who just "HAVE" to trade up are the "gotta have it!" guys. You know who you are, lol. Hell you can pick up the players dirt cheap now, buy one and put it in storage. The money you save on buying back titles alone will pay for it. I get blu-rays for all my new titles though, only because it's the only choice now. We aren't talking about beta-max. These things look identical and will last forever.
-
....if they'd done that back when HD DVD (officially) died.
"Jumped in a little too early"...I think you mean "jumped onto the wrong bandwagon". But hey, who ever would have thought that the format with very slim studio support, no "backdoor" installbase expansion, and inferior technology would lose? -
the standard price point by Xmas will be 125-150 and deals at Walmart, Costco, Sams will be 99.99 for BluRay players...mark my words.
-
... Warner Brothers has been lately understanding who is the hand that feeds them. Did you know that most of the bluray prints of WB are zone free? I live in Spain but bought quite cheap "The Lost Boys" and "Blade Runner" american edition (the latter, the 5 discs set, 8 months before it has been released in Spain: it costed me 23 euros when I would have to pay double for the same discs).
-
i'm smart with money and not mindless consumer. and the longer it takes for bullshit hi def tech to take hold, the longer i can enjoy buying cheap DVDs
-
Samsung has already said that sub-$100 players will be here by Christmas and as far as lagging sales are concerned there are no signs of happening anytime soon.In fact, YTD 2009 sales are already double that of 2008.Nothing is recession-proof but entertainment expenditures can be pretty close. Liquor sales are at the top of course but you get the idea.Anyway, Juliet's tits.
-
"bullshit hi def tech"lol
-
I'm a BluRay convert, but I saw this story printed April 1st.."According to NPD, sales of Blu-ray standalone players plummeted 40 percent from January to February, then rose a scant 2 percent from February to March. The price of upconverting players is hovering around $70. And this week, Amazon is giving them away for free when consumers purchase certain Samsung TVs. The result: a 5 percent uptick in upconverting DVD player sales in the first quarter of 2008, compared to same quarter a year ago, and a 39 percent decline in players that don’t have that feature.ABI Research is even less optimistic. In a report released yesterday, the research firm figures it could take until October 2009 until Blu-ray gains a foothold in the market."..do you have info that disputes this?
-
it was a great collection, fantastic packaging and this is coming from someone who doesnt even like the movies. but why oh why did they do this when there are still 2 movies left (3 if part 7 is truly split in two)? i'm used to seeing collections made when a series isn't done but this one was a really nice package, not just a crappy cardboard box to hold them in.
-
No I don't. Honestly I just remember reading an article briefly about the doubling sales figure (a quick Google News search will bring it up, just tried) and most people I know have taken the plunge so I just assumed the format is doing very well.

bouncy x there is one thing i hate about the hp set
by supercowbell4therequestformorecowbell
the outside case that holds all the movies is cool, but the actually br cases that hold them SUCK FUCKING BALLS IN THE ASS. hp 1 and 2 cases are smaller, cardboard like, cd cases and 3-5 are about normal sized cases but their still crappy cardboard. i guess its supposed to look like the supercool and tottally mindblowing books that harry carries around but they suck asshole.
-
The Dark Knight sold over 1 million bluray units in the US alone in the first week. Yes, it was the hottest movie of the year (decade?), just before the holidays, but laserdisc never had sales close to that figure. Ever.
-
I've got about 70 HD-DVD. I picked up a bunch of them for around $10 when the format was dyign. Not sure if I want to spend more money on them. I might though.
For those asking why the trade-in. I have the 360 HD-DVD attachment, and it's friggin loud. So switching to my Blu-ray makes my viewing quiter. Also, it could be nice to have a movie collection that's a little more standardized. -
I picked up Close Encounters on Blu-ray. Much of it is amazing, especially the audio. However the grain of the film becomes very prominent in many scenes. So if you go in expecting something crystal clear, you will be disappointed. You get a near-exact match of the reference material, and anything shot more than 20 years ago will probably have a lot of film grain. I'm happy to have it over some "remastered" copy that blurs it all out.
-
At first the 5 buck upgrade fee sort of bugged me. But then it hit me. I was on the verge of re-buying Casablanca on Blu-Ray to get the uber-box set out anyway. The cost of that is equal to the cost of upgrading all my eligible WB discs anyway. So, really, I break even. I just wish I could trade in ALL my WB HD DVDs. Still a bunch not on Blu-Ray so you can't trade them in.
-
I have a nice collection, and as I use my Xbox 360 to play them, the player isn't taking up any extra input on my TV. The quality is exactly the same between the two, and WB hasn't been putting any more extras on the Blu-Ray's than the HD-DVD's, so I don't need this.
And BTW, whomever back there said a lot of Blu-Rays are just upconverted DVD's, you're dead wrong. I think there was *ONE*, and it got a LOT of flack for it. Admittedly, some movies are really crappy converts, like A Christmas Story, but even that one is better quality than you'd ever get upconverting a DVD.
Speaking of which, upconverting a DVD will never give you a better looking picture than a normal DVD on a high quality standard definition TV. That's really the point behind upconverting DVD players, is to try and match the quality if it didn't have to do any upconverting at all. -
With this program you get to keep the HD DVDs. I like my HDs but I know one day I'll end up losing the player, don't want to lose my flickage with it.
-
Sorry, I was in a rush at the time I made my entry but that was the point I was trying to make -- the equipment/software to play HD DVD will be around for a long time, so why dish out money now that I don't need to? Sure, my Toshiba HD-A35 will die someday, but I have a LG Blu-ray/HD DVD drive built into an HTPC to take up the slack. If/When that dies, there will be alternatives available to bypass any issue that arises (software emulation, modification of China's current CH DVD hardware -- it's already a proprietary modification of Toshiba's HD DVD tech anyway, etc., etc. etc.). And someday down the road, the same thing will happen to Blu-ray. Such is life.
-
Yes, they are probably the best rack on TV. Others include Rack Bauer, and uh.... Well fuck! Thay are the only 2 shows I watch other than sports. Maybe I could get some leads on others...

it sales of Blu-ray Discs in the first three months of 2009 nearly doubled, compared to the same period last year, according to Adams Media Research.
Monterey, Calif.-based Adams said the high-definition format tallied about 9 million units through March, compared to 4.8 million units in 2008. There are about 10.5 million BD-enabled households, including about 7 million to 8 million dedicated BD players.
Indeed, Blu-ray revenue through March 29 totaled $196.6 million, up nearly 68% from $117.2 million during the same period last year, according to Home Media Research.
“At least twice as many homes have a BD player, so it is very expectable that it would double or more,” Adams said.
He said quality Blu-ray titles were limited until late in the quarter, with releases such as Twilight, Bolt, Quantum of Solace, Seven Pounds, Bedtime Stories and Marley & Me.
“It probably would have been better than that with a better selection of titles,” Adams sai -
I still do have the Harry Potter movies, though. I got them about a month or two before HD DVD gave up. I'll definitely switch those over!

bluray sales are rising again: from the-numbers
by supercowbell4therequestformorecowbell
"Okay, this is no longer a fluke. For the third week in a row, Blu-ray sales were up by triple digits over last year, and for the second week in a row we didn't have marquee release to help it. Overall Blu-ray sales were at $19.6 million, which is up 13% from last week and an unbelievable increase of 173% from last year. That's the best year-to-year increase since numbers were reported. As far as Blu-ray shares go, it had 8.2% of total revenue, and 7% of the top 20 comparison. The number one seller on Blu-ray was The Day the Earth Stood Still with roughly 230,000 units, while Bedtime Stories placed second with 120,000 units." pretty amazing for a week with no real big hits.
-
In other words it looks like it did in the theatre when originally released. If you think that's a bad thing you don't love movies.
-
you can stimulate the economy and attone for your mistakes all you HD-DVD adopters!
-
Fair enough man. Sorry, I thought you were one of those nut jobs clinging to HD DVD out of some bizarre sense of allegiance. i was wrong.
-
You know what looks even more "70s gritty" -- being able to see the film grain and detail just like you could in the theatres back in 1975.
-
I unfortunately bet on the underdog, hoping that price and overall quality + problems putting extra features on blu would put HDDVD over the top, but alas it was not the case. Either way, I made it out really well, got the 360 add on, ton of free hddvds, and when I was forced to switch to Blu, I got the PS3 MGS4 pack. I certainly can't complain. TO anyone who is still on the fence, if you have a big tv, upgrade. You will never even think about going back. If you don't have a big TV it's definitely not worth it now, but I'd recommend you stop buying new DVDs, so that one day when the dust settles, you'll be able to experience movies the way they always should have been experienced.
-
All of the movies that are just coming out now will probably be available on those choice Amazon deals.
-
Are HD-DVD fans who are already on board the digital distribution train and curing WB for nto giving them Digital copies that will probably be mailed to them on a disc anyway...Just get a PS3 you nuggets... Blu-Ray, Games, DVD upscaling through HDMI, even Digital distribution via PSN of movies, TV shows and games, hell you can even watch shit for free through the internet browser! Tomorrow I'm going to post a message on here making fun of y'all on my PS3 remotely by PSP just because I can!

i dont know if that makes any sense...

They charge you five bucks per disc PLUS 3 bucks postage- so you are paying 8 bucks for a "free" Blu Ray. Man I wish I never bought that damn HD player.
-
Why all the hate? Yes, some of us wasted quite a bit of money in our SOUND choice of HD-DVD awhile back. The players were better, upgradeable and cheaper. And yes, we chose incorrectly thanks to a $500 million bribe that sent the format to the Betamax grave. Sadly, my HD-A2 is spotty at best when loading up and I feel much more comfortable trading my stuff in to Blu because we use it EVERY DAY, whether it be netflix blu-rays or as the PS3. Being able to trade in 10 movies for 60 bucks and not worrying about my HD-Dvd player exploding or just plain embarrasing me in a conversation is reason alone to take Warner Bros. up on their semi-generous offer. Now...anyone wannna buy 10 Hd-DVDs without box art?

It makes perfect sense to me (even if it shows my age)

I haven't jumped into the HD world yet since I'm still job hunting - but between this offer and the Warner Archive recently, you've jumped to the front of the line of studios getting my respect. And to all you biatching and whining people in here, please. For once, a MEDIA CONGLOMERATE is doing what you've all pissed and moaned about forever. They're listening and providing options to their customers that are feasible, affordable, and pretty damned customer friendly. Now man up and say THANK YOU for a change and encourage programs like this - or the next time there's a format change and you start biatching yet again, you're getting an axe to the forehead.
-
Now if you can just do it internationally for us wankers in places like Canuckistan Im there. Oh and please add Complete Matrix to that list thanks as I dont have the Ultimate Collection (I thought complete meant complete but you managed to makes it incomplete by not adding Animatrix which I found out the hard way). :P
-
oh wait...
-
The more important having a Blu-Ray is. If you have a 32-inch. A Blu-Ray is probably a waste. However in my case, I have a projector and a 92-inch screen and my DVDs look like VHS.
-
here where i live there is this store called buybacks where people just trade in there movies and games...I am sure some (most?) are quite possibly stolen because why would anyone trade in a 30 dollar blu ray movie the same day of its release and and get only 9 bucks in trade for it so buybacks can sell it for 16?
i remember paying 24 bucks for a still sealed red xbox 360 controller with the charge kit....THE DAY IT CAME OUT....It retailed for 60.
financial experts say that you should never pay full retail for things like books cds and movies...
so i typically wait a couple days..and then head to buybacks... -
The format never had a chance and was never treated seriously by retailers or anybody else for that matter. It was a transition format that was doomed to failure from the outset where by contrast Blueray is selling very well.
-
He is right. You can see some amazing stuff on the cheap on old tech. In 1992 I saw Conan the Barbarian for the first time on... VIDEODISC. Not laserdisc, videodiscs that each weighed like 10 pounds. However, dude got a vdisc player and selection of titles for $10. Gave hours of entertainment.
-
Sounds like gold mine for new stuff. And a legal "fencing" operation. The best I have found for second hand Blu's are at Blockbuster which thin their rental shelves by selling a couple month old titles for 16.99. Not bad when their standards go for 14.99.
-
I'm not the guy you kill, I'm the guy you buy! Are you so fucking blind that you don't even see what I am? I sold out Arthur for 80 grand. I'm your easiest problem and you're gonna kill me?
-
and my blurays, Hd's are £3 each or less. my player less than £50. the only losers are the ones that just wanna bash HDDVD just cos that's all they've got to do with their time. both formats are fine. can't we all just get along?
-
all you HDDVD slaters, what exactly is wrong with the format that you hate it so?. a genuine question...
-
How about the simple fact that it holds less data than blu-ray??? See the debacle over Transformers and having to decide between extra features and HD sound! Sound got teh axe because there wasn't enough damn data on the disc. Meantime blu-ray is currently reaching into the 200GB range usable on current players. Blu-ray is simply better technology for that simple reason alone! Also it's not so much that we hate HD-DVD, just the stubborn HD-DVD fanatics who bellowed on and on against blu-ray and spreading FUD that it was going to fail. They were the loudest most stubborn idiots and now it's time to rub it in their faces! Blu ray was always the sure thing! The PS3 launch, more studio support, bigger storage size made it pretty damn obvious to me! Just because people were jumping on the cheaper/half year head start/special features that would be available on blu ray enevitably anyways bandwagon didn't make it a guaranteed success and frankly I blame it for drawing out the war longer.
-
Thank you, i totally forgot about the capacity. I was only thinking in terms of picture. Never knew about the Transformers sound/extras decision.
-
their the exact same thing, they just play in a different player. if the trade was free, that would be a different story.
-
The quality was superb and lasted twenty years. Hell I still watch some criterion Laserdiscs that never ported over to dvd.
I don't mind the occasional dvd, but HD is the shit. I never understood the discussion or bickering. If you can't afford HD that's fine. DVD's are awesome quality, but don't bash HD for the 5 dollar difference. And if something comes in the future that beats Bluray's quality, so be it. I'll just buy the newer films in that format or specific titles like I did with my first move to HD.
Technology is always changing there's no doubt about it. But who wants to wait 5 years for Godfather in super rez 7d Holograph tecnology when I can watch it now with my compatible 1080P TV? -
I sat in disbelief watching that episode where the former fattie cheerleader killed the guy who won the $1,000,000 basketball toss. The CSIs took a video/picture of her drawing the winning seat and enhanced it enough to read the freaking seat number from it. I think it must have been GREEN-RAY or maybe RAINBOW-RAY. No who BLEW-RAY for them. TV's MATLOCK show was always enchancing dark VHS security camera videos to win a case. Also, I am so glad TYSON the sadist-Mormon was voted out of SURVIVOR last night. He was a real prick. Now I get to see Sierra's blurred crotch for at least another episode.

HD-PUNDITS CLAIMING NONSENSE FIGURES LIKE "yOU CAN FIT BOTH THEA
by maxthesilent
And although I was forced to go with Blu-Ray in its subsequent 'victory', I've never swayed from my opinion that HD-DVD was by far the superior format. The ONLY thing that Blu-Ray had going for it that made the major studios ultimately go with it was region-coding. And anyone who thinks that it was any kind of TECHNICAL advantage of the format that pushed it over the finish line is a complete fool. HD-DVD was the better format, nothing will ever change that. But for now I guess we have more double-dips to look forward to on the Blu-ray format. Especially the likes of LORD OF THE RINGS, where I clearly remember pro-Blu-Ray pundits spouting nonsense like "You can put both theatrical AND extended versions of the LOTR films ON ONE DISC!!" Which, of course, has subsequently been proven to be complete horseshit.
