Quint announces a new regular column! A Movie A Week begins one week from today!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Well, well, well. So, without a strict deadline I can’t be trusted as has been shown by that Sideshow Star Wars contest and my attempt at carrying the torch of A Movie A Day: Quint’s Watching.
As huge and prolific as A Movie A Day was, I still feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of vintage film… In other words, my taste for classic cinema is piqued and I can’t stop now.
I figured if I’m going to have a weekly vintage film column, why not just lock in a day and make that my deadline. And if I’m going to truly carry on the AMAD legacy then why not acknowledge that?
So beginning Monday, April 27th A Movie A Week will be born. It’ll follow the same rules as A Movie A Day, but weekly instead of daily, which is too torturous of a schedule for me to continue without it hurting my other site work.
Additionally, this week leading up to the ribbon-cutting on the new column I’m going to run a throwback of A Movie A Day. I have never seen any of the Thin Man films, but I’ve heard nothing but great things about them. A few months back I picked up the box set, so I’m going to go through them this week and write up each one. The first review will hit today and that should have us covered up until Saturday.
The first title of A Movie A Week will be the Marilyn Monroe star vehicle HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE (1953), which will be jumping off from SONG OF THE THIN MAN, following William Powell over.
Stay tuned for my write-up of THE THIN MAN later today!

You'll enjoy 'em tons, Quint
-
Always liked the column.
-
and i should be part of it ..... sounds good
-
Hey that's the name of the site too!
-
Loved the old column and the box set is one of my favorites. I'll be very interested to see how you feel about the first two. I think they set a bar that neither the rest of the series (or any of the gazillion knockoffs) could reach.
-
A movie a week is a nice momentum to keep, I think.
Shame it couldn't have it's own feature-box (or whathaveyou) on the mainpage laybout, as a regular appreciation of vintage film it really should be a bastion of the site. But you can't have everything...
Looking forward to it with all the fun and the japery and hope it's as rewarding as last time. To write and to read.
Good luck, Señor Q. -
...than a movie a day. But much more realistic or a grown man...good luck.
-
This is going to be awesome
-
I mean really, is there a point other then to fill your own self indulgence?
-
Kudos for keeping up with AMAD for as long as you did. I write reviews for another site and it's hard to keep up with 1-2 a week, let alone 1 a day plus all other obligations. Must've been brutal.
-
Sweet. While I loved the AMAD thing I had to wonder about your sanity Quint, I mean that was a pretty gruelling (and somewhat thankless) task you had set for yourself.
AMAW is a more realistic goal and, seeing as to how prolific you were with the AMAD format, more than likely a better approach. It'll give you more time to digest the films you watch (and I suspect watch something else if your first pick sucks).
Good luck and good viewing. I envy anyone who hasn't seen The Thin Man, especially if that person is a writer, because the dialogue literally crackles with intensity and wit. -
Well, most of the time. I think you did a couple columns I found interesting though, so maybe this'll keep your juices flowing more sanely. I dunno. Whatever. This might be the first regular site feature I skip over, well, other than ScriptSlut.
-
Glad to see Quint starting this up.
-
unlike...ahem...the DVD roundups..
-
But the news is most excellent. AMAD was one of the best things on this site and is much missed. You have complete respect from me, Quint, for all of your work. Thank you for returning to more of the classic reviews!
-
What else is there to say???
-
Thanks, Quint! You're my favorite reviewer here by far. I like the way you are open to all types of films, and age (yours and/or the movie's) doesn't deter you in the least. You keep an open mind and you're a true movie geek. I look forward to reading your column.
-
Yes indeed. I think that's part of the fun of AMAD and what made it work. That does exclude some foreign titles, but with the schedule less hectic I might be able to run a foreign classics series to cover some of the foreign stuff I pick up.Clockwork, I get a lot out of it personally and it's easily the most popular thing I've done for the site. If it's not your thing, no worries. No one says you have to follow along. It's real easy to not click on links that you're not interested in... requires zero effort.
-
AMAD is imho the best regular feature AICN has ever hosted. I can see how that pace would be unsustainable so AMAW sounds perfect. Thanks Quint.
-
These bubbly '50s comedies are like crack to me. And they're not all total fluff, they're teh post-modern, yo! Look at Lauren Bacall's line referencing Humphrey Bogart in How to Marry a Millionaire. That's the kind of shit you just don't get away with today- or it's way overdone. Here it comes off just perfect.
Plus Marilyn looks dreamy in glasses. -
They weren't kidding when they said, "Myrna Loy was the leading lady every man wanted to marry." NO ONE had as much chemistry as William Powell and her in those movies. Seriously, I can't think of a single other onscreen couple who meshed together as well as those two. It's kinda disappointing to hear they didn't do the dirty off-set, too. Or at least to me.
-
Great, more movies reviewed that the rest of theworld has already seen.
-
The point of AMAD is to discuss movies. Not discuss Christian Bale's freak outs or which director is a jackass or who's a closeted homo, etc. That is the self indulgent crap.
-
Day, week, whatever. Hands down the best thing on AICN for years. Welcome back!
-
Can we use next week's talkback to discuss rumoured Marilyn Monroe freakouts? ;-)
-
No politeness here. Get the fuck to it, Quint.
-
And I expect you to be following along each and every one telling how how disinterested you are. So disinterested that you comment more than the regular readers of the column.
-
AMAD was the best thing in ages
-
About a month ago you reviewed some random old movie and gave us a list of movies you planned on reviewing and wanted us to vote on which we preferred (I voted for SHERLOCK HOLMES SMARTER BROTHER). Whatever happened to those?
My 2 cents: I hope a majority of the movies are fron the 60s and later. I have a difficult time identifying with THE THIN MAN series, etc. Movies from that era seem so dry. -
even if I saw most of the titles. Great read and I am still amazed you stuck by it all the way through.
Bring it on. -
...and as drunk as nick and nora in this deservedly classic classic. you can practically smell the jubilation over the repeal of prohibition coming off the script/cast. looking forward to seeing what you're watching on the weekly and which the rest of the world has neither watched nor reviewed so much...(!!)
-
Hey, Quint. I forgot the rules of how you choose you're films. I think it was one's you haven't seen before. So if you haven't seen ANY of Akira Kurasawa's films, please include one or two. I just watched "Throne of Blood" over the weekend, the arrow scene at the end was one of the best choreographed scenes in film history. Period. They actually shot arrows at Toshiro Mifune. Anyway, 7 Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Ran, Throne of Blood. High and Low All great and all on criterion treatment. I'd like to hear your take even if you have seen them. Just a humble request and will understand if you don't do it but here's hoping.
-
Love the column quint. Easily my favorite ever feature on the site. Look forward to following you through obscure and overlooked films. Also, I can't wait for October again!
-
My favorite column on this site is back (in a limited form).
And no offense to Bob Parr, but I like it when you review older, pre 1960 movies. I mean, the is a reason that the call it the Golden Age of Hollywood. -
Two words: Ass Cancer. Please get it. That is all.
-
A dreary Monday in southeastern Wisconsin just got a lot brighter, can't wait! AMAD was a gas!
-
AMAD was my favorite read on the site when it was running.
-
And I said it before and say it again: I wish I had as much time to watch and review movies as you
-
I bought Elaine May's Mikey & Nicky after reading your review in an AMAD from a few months back. I owe you a dozen rounds of pints next time you come to England, because that movie rocked my world. A thousand salaams to you, Eric!
And #1 Zero, I couldn't disagree with you more. Kurosawa's a morbid hack! Stay a million miles away from his "movies" (movies are supposed to MOVE, right? Postcards have more movement than his shitfests).
Yeah, just fuckin' witcha. Good call, Zero. -
I enjoyed the movie a day stuff and this idea sounds much more manageable.
-
...loved AMAD, it's nice to see it back again, even if the schedule is less frequent. Could I make a request, though? Would you go back to the daily schedule just for October? Those daily horror movies picked at random were entirely too much fun, I'd love to see that done again.
-
Can't wait to get reading!!
-
I finally get a new talkback account, and Quint is going to start watching old movies again.Don't call it a comeback... cos no-one will remember me, but I'm glad you're getting back into this, Quint.
-
.....that actually comes back to life!
I look forward to your enjoyment of the greatness that is Amarcord. -

MUCH better

You're announcing that you're eventually going to write something? That's worthy of an article here? Just write it and post it. I don't give a crap what you had for breakfast either.
-
Lot of good stuff out there. Looking forward to the new run.
-
One the best of the 30's! I picked up the boxed set for like 25 bucks a while back. If you haven't seen the first one treat yourself. (that is if you like movies made pre-Godfather)
-
Please do all the pre-Production Code movies!!
-
has the thin man collection. I had never really heard about it untill said he was a fan.
-
And yeah i'll second #1 Zero's request for some Kurosawa reviews.
's got to be Red beard for me. -
Such a kick as film. the two leads are such lushes it's hilarious. Haven't seen the sequels.
-
Shadow of the Thin Man is my favorite.Glad to see this column back as well and I completely understand not wanting to do it every day. One a week will be great.
-
That is all
-
Only seen The Thin Man. Might have to get the boxed set too so I can play along at home...
-
looking forward to them Quint, good luck!
-
There is really something to be said for reviews written by a consistent and prolific source... the more that's written, the more you learn about the reviewer's unique perspective and preferences, and the greater the context that you have to place a single review against...compared to some anonymous reviewer you've never heard of.
With AMAD you built up a great library of work in an insanely short period of time, and though I can't fault you for not keeping up the same pace, I think you've created a substantial enough body of work to make the weekly columns (and your regular reviews and site reports) a nice, ongoing top-up. And your reviews of classic film offer a nice counterpart to some of the genre related hijinks here that are generally fun, but which can tend to get everyone quagmired from time to time.
And I echo whoever said you need a side bar or a title or something. Along with Coaxial, you should have a title bar for this -- a single, sortable, searchable place for your review library.
One last comment -- I hope that the "continuation theme" keeps working for you, and allows you to explore a good range of unseen films by following common threads between them. But if not, I hope you consider taking a break every once in a while from this pattern, and reviewing a classic film as voted on by the talk-backers or something... whether you have seen it before or not, so long as you haven't reviewed it before. It would end up fleshing out your library, from just classic and previously-unseen-by-Quint to classic but previously-unreviewed (which would include a metric crapload of awemsome movies to draw from). -
with a review of a couple of lushes in love.
-
... is always a great way to start... did she make a single bad movie? I've seen most of 'em and frankly the girl has one of the best filmographies of any Hollywood star.
-
AMAD was one of my favorite features on the site. I noticed a lot of people posting about what you should be watching. Fuck that.
I love the kicks you got on with AMAD... an actor, a director, a genre.... it was just plain fun reading about YOU having fun with film. Starting off this new endeavor with the "Thin Man" films is inspired. You keep writing 'em, I'll keep reading 'em. -
It's funny. I bet he is SO happy to hear about AMAW, so that he can be publicly disinterested more.
-
Everything m00kiedood wrote.....
-
People smoke & drink & allude (as muchs as a post-Hays code allows)to fucking at the drop of a dime. Great date movies! Welcome back Quinty!
-
Damn you, Van Dyke!
-
We've got to spread the word about classic film...
-
... I didn't realize you'd never seen "The Thin Man" series, dude. These are among my very favorite films. I love the chemistry of Powell and Loy together, and even in the worst of the series, they're still a joy. Looking forward to your articles, and thrilled you're back to the movie a week idea. Huzzah.
-
Thin Man rules and I'm really looking forward to Quint's new column.
-
never seeing the thin man movies is kinda like never visiting manhattan. once you do, you can place all the references to so many places in movies, like the guggenheim, central park, etc..
and so many movies reference the thin man and it's amazing chemistry between the leads, that you will feel right at home once you're done.
i'm from SF (a native) and so when i got to see my mother and father's san francisco so well portrayed in film, that was an extra incentive for me.
funny and perfectly executed, with amazing scripts, ahh the good ole days..
thanks for the gift of your new column to us all.
-
I was more than pleased with the end result. :) I've got Luke right here with me every day at work. Awesome!
-
frogs, scream blacula scream, the mac, the abominable dr phibes w/ vincent price, dr. phibes rises again, etc.
-
Seen all but dr. phibes rises again (which I do have and is on some list, but probably won't be gotten to in the near future)... "The Mac" you refer to is the blaxploitation flick "The Mack" about pimps, right? That's a classic!
-
Powell and Loy are fun. And the series is a hoot.
-
you GOTTA see it and review it! you hadn't gotten to it yet if I remember right. That movie-will knock yer Sawks off. Cagney rules.
-
i see that are taste in bad flicks is similar. phibes rises again is great. the deaths all have egyptian motifs and is as hilarious as the first. the mack! you are corrct sir.
-
Glad to hear this is coming back Quint! AMAD, as has been well stated by many others already, was the best thing on this site in quite some time. My only worry would be if you hit the box sets - 7 weeks of a series could drag out a bit, so try to keep it mixed if you can. Best of luck!
-
I've started planning the first 5 or 6 months and I've made a real effort to break up the actors/directors when I jump from film to film... so I don't have 4 Hitchcocks in a row or 5 Cagney's in a row, etc. On a weekly basis that'd really get dull, I think. Variety counts with this new column!Stay tuned... Thin Man is written up and I just need to resize and upload some pics before posting...
-
they are all worth watching (like mori said) because of the chemistry and humor of powell & loy. the first three are the best (in my opinion), and the first scene of the first movie sets the tone perfectly for every one after: here's the CORRECT way to shake up a cocktail, boys....
-
Awesome, Quint. It'll be good to have this feature back.
-
....ok I know you haven't went away, but I now many of us missed your take on a lot of films that many of us haven't seen. I've seen one or two of the Thin Man movies, don't remember which. So I have an interest in these(ah, fuck it. I already know that I'm gonna buy them.) Have you checked out the Warner Archive collection? I've picked up a few that I hadn't seen before. Watched The Mating Game with Tony Randall, not bad(even has a young William Smith) and plan on watching My Blood Runs Cold tonight,(it might suck, but i love the title.)

great...now i gotta wait a week for a review of a movie most peo
by bewareofaholywhore
love the more obscure ones...but mostly don't care if you're just now getting around to seeing the odd couple or whatever...
-
I was worried about ya watching one vintage film daily.... especially when many are just mediocre. This way you can focus more on the true classics we haven't seen rather than some of the tripe. Kudos!
-
Welcome indeed--- Can't wait to read your reviews! Always a fun mixed bag of genres!
-
Quint, could you put those horror movies you didn't get to in October back in the lineup?
-
I'm glad to see this column come back. I would never have recorded and watched Two Minute Warning had I not read your review in the AMAD column. I, like Continentalop, appreciate the films from earlier on in the 20th century. I'm looking forward to your submissions!
