Quint announces a new regular column! A Movie A Week begins one week from today!

Published at:  Apr 20, 2009 10:42:23 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Well, well, well. So, without a strict deadline I can’t be trusted as has been shown by that Sideshow Star Wars contest and my attempt at carrying the torch of A Movie A Day: Quint’s Watching.

As huge and prolific as A Movie A Day was, I still feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of vintage film… In other words, my taste for classic cinema is piqued and I can’t stop now.

I figured if I’m going to have a weekly vintage film column, why not just lock in a day and make that my deadline. And if I’m going to truly carry on the AMAD legacy then why not acknowledge that?

So beginning Monday, April 27th A Movie A Week will be born. It’ll follow the same rules as A Movie A Day, but weekly instead of daily, which is too torturous of a schedule for me to continue without it hurting my other site work.

Additionally, this week leading up to the ribbon-cutting on the new column I’m going to run a throwback of A Movie A Day. I have never seen any of the Thin Man films, but I’ve heard nothing but great things about them. A few months back I picked up the box set, so I’m going to go through them this week and write up each one. The first review will hit today and that should have us covered up until Saturday.

The first title of A Movie A Week will be the Marilyn Monroe star vehicle HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE (1953), which will be jumping off from SONG OF THE THIN MAN, following William Powell over.

Stay tuned for my write-up of THE THIN MAN later today!

Loved the old column and the box set is one of my favorites. I'll be very interested to see how you feel about the first two. I think they set a bar that neither the rest of the series (or any of the gazillion knockoffs) could reach.

A movie a week is a nice momentum to keep, I think.

Shame it couldn't have it's own feature-box (or whathaveyou) on the mainpage laybout, as a regular appreciation of vintage film it really should be a bastion of the site. But you can't have everything...

Looking forward to it with all the fun and the japery and hope it's as rewarding as last time. To write and to read.

    Good luck, Señor Q.

Kudos for keeping up with AMAD for as long as you did. I write reviews for another site and it's hard to keep up with 1-2 a week, let alone 1 a day plus all other obligations. Must've been brutal.

    by soylentmean

Sweet. While I loved the AMAD thing I had to wonder about your sanity Quint, I mean that was a pretty gruelling (and somewhat thankless) task you had set for yourself.

AMAW is a more realistic goal and, seeing as to how prolific you were with the AMAD format, more than likely a better approach. It'll give you more time to digest the films you watch (and I suspect watch something else if your first pick sucks).

Good luck and good viewing. I envy anyone who hasn't seen The Thin Man, especially if that person is a writer, because the dialogue literally crackles with intensity and wit.

Yes indeed. I think that's part of the fun of AMAD and what made it work. That does exclude some foreign titles, but with the schedule less hectic I might be able to run a foreign classics series to cover some of the foreign stuff I pick up.Clockwork, I get a lot out of it personally and it's easily the most popular thing I've done for the site. If it's not your thing, no worries. No one says you have to follow along. It's real easy to not click on links that you're not interested in... requires zero effort.

    by seppukudkurosawa

These bubbly '50s comedies are like crack to me. And they're not all total fluff, they're teh post-modern, yo! Look at Lauren Bacall's line referencing Humphrey Bogart in How to Marry a Millionaire. That's the kind of shit you just don't get away with today- or it's way overdone. Here it comes off just perfect.

Plus Marilyn looks dreamy in glasses.

    by seppukudkurosawa

They weren't kidding when they said, "Myrna Loy was the leading lady every man wanted to marry." NO ONE had as much chemistry as William Powell and her in those movies. Seriously, I can't think of a single other onscreen couple who meshed together as well as those two. It's kinda disappointing to hear they didn't do the dirty off-set, too. Or at least to me.

    by #1 zero

Hey, Quint. I forgot the rules of how you choose you're films. I think it was one's you haven't seen before. So if you haven't seen ANY of Akira Kurasawa's films, please include one or two. I just watched "Throne of Blood" over the weekend, the arrow scene at the end was one of the best choreographed scenes in film history. Period. They actually shot arrows at Toshiro Mifune. Anyway, 7 Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Ran, Throne of Blood. High and Low All great and all on criterion treatment. I'd like to hear your take even if you have seen them. Just a humble request and will understand if you don't do it but here's hoping.

There is really something to be said for reviews written by a consistent and prolific source... the more that's written, the more you learn about the reviewer's unique perspective and preferences, and the greater the context that you have to place a single review against...compared to some anonymous reviewer you've never heard of.

With AMAD you built up a great library of work in an insanely short period of time, and though I can't fault you for not keeping up the same pace, I think you've created a substantial enough body of work to make the weekly columns (and your regular reviews and site reports) a nice, ongoing top-up. And your reviews of classic film offer a nice counterpart to some of the genre related hijinks here that are generally fun, but which can tend to get everyone quagmired from time to time.

And I echo whoever said you need a side bar or a title or something. Along with Coaxial, you should have a title bar for this -- a single, sortable, searchable place for your review library.

One last comment -- I hope that the "continuation theme" keeps working for you, and allows you to explore a good range of unseen films by following common threads between them. But if not, I hope you consider taking a break every once in a while from this pattern, and reviewing a classic film as voted on by the talk-backers or something... whether you have seen it before or not, so long as you haven't reviewed it before. It would end up fleshing out your library, from just classic and previously-unseen-by-Quint to classic but previously-unreviewed (which would include a metric crapload of awemsome movies to draw from).

never seeing the thin man movies is kinda like never visiting manhattan. once you do, you can place all the references to so many places in movies, like the guggenheim, central park, etc..

and so many movies reference the thin man and it's amazing chemistry between the leads, that you will feel right at home once you're done.

i'm from SF (a native) and so when i got to see my mother and father's san francisco so well portrayed in film, that was an extra incentive for me.

funny and perfectly executed, with amazing scripts, ahh the good ole days..

    Box Sets

    by medianerd

Glad to hear this is coming back Quint! AMAD, as has been well stated by many others already, was the best thing on this site in quite some time. My only worry would be if you hit the box sets - 7 weeks of a series could drag out a bit, so try to keep it mixed if you can. Best of luck!

I've started planning the first 5 or 6 months and I've made a real effort to break up the actors/directors when I jump from film to film... so I don't have 4 Hitchcocks in a row or 5 Cagney's in a row, etc. On a weekly basis that'd really get dull, I think. Variety counts with this new column!Stay tuned... Thin Man is written up and I just need to resize and upload some pics before posting...

huzzah for the thin man series!

    by legokenobi

they are all worth watching (like mori said) because of the chemistry and humor of powell & loy. the first three are the best (in my opinion), and the first scene of the first movie sets the tone perfectly for every one after: here's the CORRECT way to shake up a cocktail, boys....

    Welcome back Quint...

    by eustisclay

....ok I know you haven't went away, but I now many of us missed your take on a lot of films that many of us haven't seen. I've seen one or two of the Thin Man movies, don't remember which. So I have an interest in these(ah, fuck it. I already know that I'm gonna buy them.) Have you checked out the Warner Archive collection? I've picked up a few that I hadn't seen before. Watched The Mating Game with Tony Randall, not bad(even has a young William Smith) and plan on watching My Blood Runs Cold tonight,(it might suck, but i love the title.)

One a week is more reasonable and more discerning

    by doctorzoidberg

I was worried about ya watching one vintage film daily.... especially when many are just mediocre. This way you can focus more on the true classics we haven't seen rather than some of the tripe. Kudos!

    Yippee!

    by pilotgrl

I'm glad to see this column come back. I would never have recorded and watched Two Minute Warning had I not read your review in the AMAD column. I, like Continentalop, appreciate the films from earlier on in the 20th century. I'm looking forward to your submissions!
