Steven Soderbergh Gives Us A Taste Of THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE!

When Steven Soderbergh cast adult-film star Sasha Grey as a high-class prostitute in THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE, there was a notion that the Academy Award-winning director might incorporate some actual bouncy-bouncy in his study of purchased intimacy - because it's always hot when a top-tier filmmaker shoots people a-pumpin' and a-sweatin' for real. But Soderbergh, who's never been much for sensationalism (for the most recent example, see CHE), went in a completely different direction, opting for a cerebral examination of simulated romance.
Soderbergh's refusal to get emotionally engaged with his material can be frustrating, but his clinical approach feels appropriate here. And the trailer, which just debuted at Hulu, definitely promises that classic Soderbergh distance. You should know by now if his aesthetic is to your liking.

I am a little curious as to why there was NO dialogue in the preview. Maybe its just there to titalate. Also Soderbergh recently sounded like he hated his oscar experience for Traffic. He said he hated having to campaign for it and all. I guess you can say that now that you have an oscar and pretty much have carte blanche to make whatever film you want somehow. Seriously, Bubble, 4 hour Che movie, and now this. I guess the financial success of the Ocean's movies really does let him make the one's he wants to make.

Even when Soderbergh movies disappoint, they're still admirable

The man could just crank out Ocean's 11 sequels forever, but he's constantly in there swinging with challenging, experimental projects. And he even managed to atone for the dreary Ocean's 12 with the peppy, entertaining 13 (threequels better than sequels are pretty rare).

Film experiments with non professionals can be decent but are often painful to sit through and are no more realistic for their voyeuristc aspirations. I don't have faith in Soderbergh to choose quality over a perceived artistic experience.

Yea I don't know what it is, I mean I don't NOT find her attractive, she just... doesn't seem to do much for me for some reason (helps I suppose when there's a ridiculous amount to choose from in the porn world). BUT, I've of course still seen her nude and the boobs are JUST FINE. The worst thing she could possibly do is get a boob job, particularly when AT LEAST 80% of them come out looking like a horror show.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I vastly prefer Ocean's 12 to either 11 or 13. I love the sprawling movie meta-ness of it. Quoting Miller's Crossing, the existential "man in a suitcase" gag, Eddie Izzard and his henchwoman, the whole Bruce Willis bit. 11 was a heist flick, while 12 was more just "hanging-with-the-rat-pack" goofiness, which I much preferred. But people didn't seem to respond, I guess, so they dialed it back for 13.
As for Sasha Grey, no complaints here. :) A very sexy lass, partly because -- unlike your average porn star -- she comes off as smart and interesting. And the fact that she pushes the envelope like she does with a devilish grin rather than the usual blank stare and cow eyes makes her that more of a turn-on. -

I have no answer but the one I'm just stabbing blindly at. I'd be surprised if it didn't have something to do with either intellectual property laws that pre-date the internet causing some sort of blockade, or some distribution contract fine print that's being adhered to. The "unrelated script re-written into a sequel" thing...

...happens a lot. Die Hard With A Vengeance was originally a spec script titled "Simon Says" that was rejiggered into a Die Hard movie, which is likely why it felt NOTHING like a Die Hard movie. Ocean's 12 just plain sucked. It's like, where's the fucking HEIST? It's just two hours of the awesome characters from the first movie bungling around and getting arrested one after the other (and the "introducing Tess as Julia Roberts" shit was awful). 13 at least gave us some cool scams and plot twists again, plus Pacino.

On the schedule, it was called "An Evening with Sodebergh", and it was billed as an event like an episode of "The Actors' Studio". Sodebergh and Geoffrey Gilmore, the Director of the festival, came out and sat on down on stage like they were going to do an interview. Sodebergh spoke for a bit about a film he had recently shot that was near completion...and then he rolled it to loud applause.
Nobody had any idea what "The Girlfriend Experience" was about or who was in it. I'd never seen Sasha Grey, but she is absolutely hot as hell in this. For a porn actress she does a remarkable job, in part because she is playing a character like herself. Sodebergh mentioned during the Q&A afterward that he wanted Sasha because she was completely comfortable discussing sex explicitly, as a real call girl would be.
The story is told out of sequence, generally running forward in time. I found this to be a bit annoying at times, as I felt like I was constantly having to figure out when a segment was set in the overall story- kind of like fitting a puzzle together. I wasn't sure the non-linear structure contributed much to the film, but- there are segements that are 'skipped' and shown later for greater impact, and that worked well.
Sasha has a number of nude and semi-nude scenes and they are beautifully shot. Nothing beyond R-rated, but what's there is very good. One scene with Sasha wearing a red thong is particulary memorable. There's some humor as well, as when she meets with a client who's a Hasidic jew who discusses the importance of Israel's survival while they are undressing.
Overall a very enjoyable film. It's not a 'mainstream porno' by any stretch, which might disappoint some. But Sodebergh fans will be pleased with his excellent character development and his insightful depiction of the life of a New York escort conflicted about her job, her future and her desire for a deeper relationship with the right man. -
Of course it figures that a character like that would go for a friggin' personal trainer.

I have nothing against her for having been in porn. I don't expect people to not have skeletons in there closet or having past. I'm not a prude. I love video on demand, but who else has also seen it already. Great film and Sasha is hot--I'll probably see this again, when it comes out in theaters. It's not about good or bad acting. In a way her character is documentary. Relationships go both ways, it made me wonder about her boyfriend character and why he's with her.
