‘I Tried To Make It 20 Years Ago!!’ FRINGE 1.16!!

Published at:  Apr 15, 2009 12:33:30 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Last week Olivia found a cute little baby Observer.

Fox says of tonight’s installment, titled “Unleashed”:

As animal rights activists ransack a laboratory, they get more than they bargained for when one of the caged "animals" unleashes a ferocious appetite. Leaving grotesquely mutilated dead bodies in its wake, the scientific engineered beast with the body of a lion, claws of an eagle, fangs of a viper, skin of a rhinoceros and tail of a serpent attacks Charlie. With Charlie's life on the line, Walter must come face-to-face with both his past and the beast. Guest Cast: Craig Alan Edwards as Matt; Tim Gallin as Ken; Keith Nobbs as Carl Bussler; David Pittu as Robert Swift; Chris Jackson as EMT; Kiersten Warren as Sonia; Rafi Silver as Jonathan Swift; Jeremy Zorek as Tuck.

GOING FORWARD, BEWARE SPOILERS FOR EPISODES BEYOND TONIGHT’S!

Next week’s episode marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who won the 2002 adapted screenplay Oscar for “A Beautiful Mind,” but also unleashed into this world “Batman Forever,” “Batman & Robin,” “Lost In Space,” “I, Robot,” “The Da Vinci Code,” and “I Am Legend.”

Fox says of next week’s Goldsman episode, titled “Bad Dreams”:

As a suicide incident occurs at New York’s iconic Grand Central station, Agent Dunham simultaneously witnesses the event while asleep and dreaming in Boston. Rattled by the extraordinary and coincidental circumstances, Olivia, Peter and Walter investigate further, but keep coming up empty-handed. As these violent occurrences continue and worsen, Olivia is sent into an unthinkable direction and shocking details emerge about the ZFT manuscript, the highly experimental drug Cortexiphan and Olivia’s childhood.

Fox says of the April 28 episode, titled “Midnight”:

Fringe Division is on the case when severely mutilated bodies drained of spinal cord fluid begin to pile up. After their investigation leads them to a scientist (guest star Jefferson Mays) with possible ties to the Z.F.T. bioterrorist cell, they are shocked to discover the identity and motive of the killer. When the kills occur with increasing frequency, Olivia (Anna Torv), Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Walter (John Noble) go to desperate lengths to stop them.

Fox says of the May 5 episode, titled “The Road Not Taken”:

First her bad dreams became reality, and now Olivia is “dreaming” while awake, seeing elaborate bleak visions of things not really there. While investigating the disturbing case of a woman who apparently spontaneously combusted, Olivia throws caution to the wind and mines her unexplained visions for clues. Meanwhile, Walter comes clean about his prior knowledge of the Z.F.T. manifesto, and Peter’s secret project is revealed and yields surprising help in unraveling the mystery.

Fox says of the May 12 season finale, “There’s More Than One of Everything,” which introduces Leonard Nimoy as William Bell:

The sudden and unexpected attack on someone with close ties to Fringe Division, the return of bioterrorist David Robert Jones (guest star Jared Harris) and the inexplicable disappearance of Walter set the stage for a non-stop, nail-biting season finale of FRINGE. Questions will be answered, observations made, loyalties tested and truths and identities revealed.

As always, I like to point out that David Robert Jones is the birth name of David Bowie. Which is really really cool.

9 p.m. Tuesday. Fox.

    Observer Seen Places

    by crow3711

The Idol viewing is just the latest of these "Observer" events FOX has used to promote Fringe. He was on the sidelines at the Super Bowl this year also. It's not like AI producers weren't aware. You think the camera man just got a shot of him like that by accident? It's all marketing, so someone at home goes "who the fuck is that guy?" and trie to find out, and is lead to Fringe. They even tried to get him involved in the Inauguration Day ceremonies, having him watching Obama get inaugurated, but security issues proved too great to pull it off. I personally love this Observer shit they do. Such an awesome, unique version of horizontal marketing.

This show has delivered the goods every episode.
Olivia gets hotter, the chemistry between father & son is hilarious.
Broils get's more intriguing and I'm sure we'll see more of the creepy Observer and what he's all about next season.
This is actually the only tv show (other than Lost ) that I actually watch in real time when it airs. Everything else, I download from the net and watch later.

    My problem isn't with Olivia

    by maelstrom_zero

. . .it's with Peter Bishop. The guy seems to contribute nothing to the show each week. At least Olivia is interesting (well, moderately) by virtue of the fact that he's a main character. Peter is simply there to make random, snarky comments about why his dad is nuts.
I mean, yes, they did reference that Peter was somehow different and not normal. It's just that his character would be a lot more palatable if he actually did something constructive.

I'd like to know how many times so far walter has asked peter to get him a rootbeer float. Also the cow is awesome, that bit about him making his own yogurt was silly and funny as hell.

    by mooly

This show has been solid since episode 1. I only hope they don't go all X-files and drag it out without any idea of where they are actually going. Oh, and Peter's mysterious past have given him "connections" and a number of people who owe him favours. This has helped the team in many episodes. The problem is we don't exactly know his backstory yet.

...of losing me, although I love the main characters of this show minus Olivia. Olivia is not likable as the determined yet skeptical eventual hero...maybe its the actress or the way her character is desperately written for us to care about her. Peter and Walter are what makes the show.
The show needs to move faster toward a defining plot thread in order to keep my household on viewership. Stand alone episodes are not for me, on any show, really.

    by david lazarus long

but that doesn't mean it's not doing things that are wrong (especially from the FBI/authorities POV). I think the real twist is going to be that the "Pattern" was actually Walter's brainchild, and along with Bell he was plotting out these "experiments" to prepare the world for invasion by interdimensional beings. However, when Walter came to grips with the lives that it would cost to do these "Pattern experiments", he went against Bell which is why he was put away in the mental institution. But mark my words, Walter's past is very dark and will cast doubt on his credibility.

    The Xfiles Didn't Have.....

    by real deal

    Leonard Nimoy as William Bell!
This show is amazing on so many levels. I can see so much potential. You could have compared it to the Xfiles in the begining but it's grown so much since then. John Nobel and Joshua Jackson's byplay as father and son is great ( even when they're being serious ). The Observer is a really interesting concept. Unlike some I like Anna Torv. I would have never guessed she's got an accent in real life. I think she's a really good female lead ( and not bad to look at either ). I think the guy that plays David Robert Jones is remarkable as he really seems always the most intelligent man in the room. Then there's Blair Brown always a favorite. Lance Reddick ( Agent Broyles ) is the only one that seems to need more fleshing out but is solid in his performance. They've really assembled a good cadre of characters ( even Astrid whom I think there's more to her than meets the eye ). As far as the direction, photography, and music what's not to like? And then there's the story that's evolved from an Xfiles monster of the week to parallel universes! Now they're going to get Nimoy as William Bell! Also like another show that I loved Babylon 5 this show has already been mapped out so the writers already know where they're going with all of this. I think this show stands a chance to be one of the next big genre shows people will be watching for years to come.

    Continuous Continuity

    by fain88

I'll be the first to say I prefer ongoing or serialized episodic television over problem-of-the-week formats (although that's not always the case; cites - House M.D.). But the good thing about one-off episodes is that it can draw in the casual viewer and get them interested in the show. From what Herc's got listed here, we've got one-offs this week and one-after-next, but otherwise the story locomotive seems to be in full motion for the rest of the season. I do so love this show.

*waves to The_Observer; offers him some chili peppers* Who do you think'll win Idol? Oh, and I loved you in Sweeney Todd. But not Assassins. :)

    by smackfu

I'd speculate that 'the bad guy' of the show are the people in the other dimension who want to take over ours. Massive Dynamics is actually devoting their resources to thwarting it. They just appear shady because they're operating in secret and doing inexplicable things that are above the law. To anyone outside of that inner circle of knowledge, it would surely appear that they are a sinister organization.

The remaining episodes sound pretty excellent (I don't recall anything too spoilerlicious). It sounds like a nice buildup to the Nimoy appearance. It would be too bad if they just ended it right there (and we never really got closure on several plot points). Hopefully JJA will have a little pull, the ratings will stay level and the PTB will notice there are quite a few fans (and that a show like this might *gain* fans with some momentum into a 2nd season).

    by fain88

Good, solid episode. Much better interplay between the characters; I'm particularly happy with the more awake Pete and the fleshing out of Charley (I always liked that guy, he just was always in the background. Now, if we could just get Astrid to say more than three lines...). And that monster was the shit!

Nah, it didn't really advance the meta-plot that much...but it seems like with every episode back from the break they're re-establishing the major building blocks of the series. Last epi was the re-introduction and further insight into the Observers, this one's about Walter's past experiments, next week's about Liv's specialness. Looking forward to where the this show is going.

Two quick things...anybody notice the weird Jack-like tattoo on Charley's shoulder? It was a bunch of different possibly religious symbols (I saw a yin-yang for sure) in the form of a cross. Just the actors, or something about the character? Either way I was intrigued; it kinda' looked like those 'Coexist' bumper stickers (I'm sayin', I don't think Liv's the only one who's 'special', I think ALL the main characters have something that set them apart). And the storybook Liv was reading her neice, "Burlap Bear" or something like that...seemed like that was given a bit of prevelance. Anyone know if that's a real book or was made for the show?

  • If there is an alternative demension story line that is the resolutionary end of this series it is ultimatly disapointing because anyone w/ half a brain knows this show will not survive long enough for a payoff.

The x files lacked this thoughtfulnes and became an anoying sublime orgasimless drift. Perfect in single segments but not able to answer any of the questions it introduced. Aliens and bees.whatever. Go fuck yourself.

They should of went V on our ass and that would have been spectacular. Why can't these show producers come up with viable second and third act evolutions to well devolped concepts.

We all are waiting for some answers in frnge. St else where ending can only happen once a generation. Walter can not have dreamed all this shit in the tank.

Lost better have some sorta of tell me something make sense twist. Adam and eve sort of bilblical paradox or a spin off that takes place like ten thousand years ago staring lock and explores the islands begining. The smoke monster is so super gay.

like Heroes needs to slap a costume on one of the cast and start working a unbreakable like story line or branch off to a whole new line of charecters that have already formed a team ala the
Avengers, they could recruit the curent cast members reveal thierorigins, and there could be a group of villians. Some bad ass gang on motorcycles hat ends up some goverment secret operation. Then there should be a robot that farts all the time. 100% awesome

    Fucking American Idol

    by don lockwood

...ran over again for the second week in a row and so I didn't record the end of the episode. Why the fuck even schedule shit if you're just gonna keep running over?

It's fucking American Idol. How does it run over? Was there an extra penalty? Did someone have to blow Simon? Did they have to get Paula some smelling salts? WHAT?

Solid monster Ep. Series is building up well

    by g100

And pardon me but let's not pretend the X-Files was the first show to feature wierdness or monsters etc. The Outer Limits and Twilight Zone MIGHT just have something to say bout that.
Good creature. Bit like a mini-"Host" in the way it was handled and done. (which is a good thing)
Though I fear that something terrible will happen to Walter as he is being built up now as more "heroic" (yeah I read the spoilers but it was clear even before then)
This WILL get a second series as FOX has nothing else to touch it in this "format" and it might not have truly massive viewing figures but those who have stuck with it are likely to keep going now, especially with Nimoy coming in.
My Crazy theory ? Peter is from the OTHER Dimension. Possible scenario ? The "original" Peter died and Walter "kidnapped" himself a new Peter from over there causing an interdimensional mess, cause that's how Walter rolls. ;-)

    #1 Problem with Fringe

    by domi'sinnerchild

    1) Ditch any more "guys disarmed by Olivia's beauty and give up vital information" situations. Her character is fine and I could see guys wanting to bang her after hanging out, but nobody is buying this college guys want her at first glance crap.

The problems will "Fringe" are almost unsurmountable...

    by leafar the lost

...unless JJ Abrams makes some big changes. Where do I begn?
Lets start with Special Agent Olivia Dunham, played by Anna Torv. I'm glad that Leonard Nimoy is joining the cast, because maybe he can teach Torv how to deliver a line. In whatever show Nimoy was on, whether it was "Star Trek" or even "In Search Of...", I paid attention to every word he said. He knows how to say a line of dialogue and make you believe it. Nimoy knows how to get your attention. Torv is probably the most boring "hot looking" actress
that I have ever seen. In the first episode we get to see her in her black bra and panties, but after that nothing. My question is, what was she hired to do? She is currently failing as an interesting investigator, and as hot looking eye candy. In last night's episode she spent most of it covered up in a big coat. Adding Nimoy for the season finale is a good move, but next season they either need to add someone to Olivia's team, or get rid of someone. At the very least we need to have scenes of Olivia at her apartment in bra and panties. You could also throw in some scenes of her getting out of the shower in a towel. Anna Torv has a hot body, and it needs to be shown. I demand it!

    Dunham

    by hoichitheearless

I tend to agree she's very uninteresting. That seems to be a problem with female characters in television and movies in general... they need to be attractive and the writing doesn't do much for them beyond that. I think it'd be interesting if the show shocked us by killing Dunham off... they have this wasted character in the background in Astrid who is supposedly an FBI agent who could step right in to a featured role in the wake, though I imagine it'd be the same problem with her.

Ups and downs, mostly ups from this show

    by absolutetruth

I have been totally into Fringe since the first episode. The only thing thats really bugged me up until now has been Olivia. She started the season so borish and zombie like, and fuck, she still is to an extent, but I feel its getting better. I ahte how they were like "oh lets throw a sister and niece in there to prove shes not a robot" from the writers.....lol.....but anyway, no one on that show matters except the professor!!!!! He is one of my fav characters on all of tv included.....in fact I think I gotta put John Noble right after Michael Emerson at this point.

And Anna Torv is fucking fantastically hot. What's wrong with you people? Have you ever even HAD a girlfriend? Or does "attractive" only mean if they look like they came straight out of Playboy or MTV or something? I have those friends too. And they have never had a stable relationship in their life. It's the whole package. This chick seems interesting. I'd take her out anytime.

Anna Torv is a little mannish

    by domi'sinnerchild

Especially her voice and she walks like a Sasquatch. She's got the Eastern Block thing going for her if you're into that, but that's it. Can anybody honestly say if she went out on a girl's night with Charlie's wife, Astrid, and her sister that she wouldn't be the one getting the least attention unless she would totally drunk and half naked? I'm not saying she's ugly or even a Plain Jane, just that she's not somebody you start acting stupid about if she walks through the door. Which has happened at least three or four times during the show. Scully didn't even that happen that often.

    Point taken Domi'sInnerChild

    by ieathippies

She probably isn't the first person i would try and pick up. I would probably shoot for the sister... maybe even Astrid. But I don't like Astrid's hair. She has a great face, but she needs longer hair. Even a huge fro would do. But yeah Anna Torv seems to have several layers of defense which would make for a failed attempt. But the read-head seems like she has had some plastic surgery which always bothers the hell outta me.

    Anna Torv's actually improved

    by veritasses

Granted, she can do a lot more with her character but she's come a long way and deserves some kudos for her efforts. The writers should also do more to bring interesting dimensions to her character and her relationships. None of her relationships/interplay are interesting and that's a problem. Hopefully that's coming in future episodes though...

Joshua Jackson can take the title of Weakest Link now. While he doesn't have a lot of dialog, most of it is laced with excellent opportunities to add personality to the character, the various relationships and the show as a whole. He could significantly increase the show's cool/hip factor but is wasting most of those key moments with his bland delivery. He has the great John Noble to spar with yet he does so very little with his character. A shame.

The show's directing/lighting can often miss the mark (by a significant margin) too.

    Charlie's Wife

    by mr lucas

Bitchy I know, but I thought she looked like she might've been one of Walter's early surgical experiments - weird.
I agree with the posters saying that Peter has little to do. The writers obviously don't really know what to do with him (like Xander in the later Buffy seasons). Still, the show is shaping up nicely and (hopefully) there'll be plenty of time to flesh out the characters. Noble should get an Emmy and a pay rise (if there's any justice).Bring on season two!
