Giacchino's STAR TREK Score CD Detailed, Pre-Orderable, And More!!
Merrick here...

The soundtack CD of Michael Giacchino's forthcoming STAR TREK score has been detailed by Varese Sarabande's website. Its notes & abstract track listings are as follows:
From Producer / Director J.J. Abrams
From producer/director J.J. Abrams (Lost, Mission: Impossible: III, and Fringe) comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, Star Trek, featuring a young, new crew venturing boldly where no one has gone before. Starring Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, with Eric Bana, Winona Ryder and Leonard Nimoy.
Composer Michael Giacchino, who has served as J.J. Abrams’ musical lieutenant on all his projects, follows the extraordinarily rich musical legacy of Alexander Courage, Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner, as he boards the Enterprise for her maiden voyage.
In the tradition of Batman Begins, this is STAR TREK for a new generation, and is the most anticipated blockbuster of the 2009 summer season.
Paramount Pictures will open STAR TREK nationwide on May 8.

You can get a sense of Giacchino's new STAR TREK theme HERE. Click ENTER THE SITE. The background music that spools up is the film's main theme, and appears in multiple iterations throughout the movie (quiet, heroic, etc.). Our own ScoreKeeper wrote more about the entirety of Giacchino's score (in film context - not stand alone) HERE.
Giacchino's STAR TREK music is available for preorder...
HERE!!!
I mention all this for two reasons:
1) We've received more than a few e-mails asking about this soundtrack, when/where it would be available, etc. Hopefully these details will be helpful.
2) As a heads up. In the very near future, you'll have a chance to win one of...a few...copies courtesy of Varese Sarabande (via AICN).
Stay tuned!

Worse title ever
-
Doesn't sound remotely as good as what Jerry Goldsmith pulled off, God rest his soul.
-
his best star trek osts, which he has composed.
then its Horners ST2 ost,and then the ost of ST6,for which i dont remember the composers name. -
It seems more mature. What do the rest of you think?
-
The music used in the latest trailer kicks all kinds of ass. Is that from the score? If not, can someone please tell me where it's from?
-
It is way better than this turbolift music on the ST website.
-
God, how influential has that movie been? I love it.
-
That sounds a lot like the music James Horner wrote for the last scene of TWOK. That's not a bad thing, though, I guess. Sort of reminiscent of Cliff Eidelman's theme to TUC, as well.
-
The theme is also on youtube:
/watch?v=hBkA9g0Hf-I&fmt=18
-
Trailer 3 music is not from the score; it's a special trailer music called "Freedom Fighters" by Two Steps From Hell.
-
then it sucks major balls.
but if its the end credits theme its ok. -
We mustn't confuse the terms "main theme" and "main title". I only heard that this is one version of the primary theme/motif composed for the film. Merrick wrote that it "appears in multiple iterations throughout the movie". But I don't believe this cue is actually the "main title". It's probably only some subtle background cue from the film—or even an outtake, who knows…
-
and main title?
-
Um, no. It sounds terrible.
-
Nailin' The Kelvin? Nero Death Experience? Any chance this movie is being aimed at mall-dwelling morons?
-
Do the characters openly refer to Back to the Future in this movie??
-
"Main Title" is a specific cue that plays under the opening titles, which may or may not include the main theme... something similar to an overture. The main theme is simply the primary melody used throughout a score in several guises. E.g. the specific CD track called "Darth Vader's Theme (Imperial March)" is (afaik) not part of the Episode VI score. But the theme itself is heard in several variations throughout, as part of many cues.
-
The First Contact score was BEAUTIFUL and I rushed to the nearest CD store the next morning to buy the soundtrack.......but was told I would have to wait an entire month before it would be released.
Fortunately, the Insurrection and Nemesis scores were released about two weeks before the movie (this time on a different label) -
It's like we heard the TMP music every time we saw the Enterprise. How about some new music. At least Williams had the guts to write new music for the SW prequels.
-
jesus christ i heard even that.goldsmith score got old and is inferior than giacchinos.

That horrible poster looks even shittier when it's truncated.
by jackpumpkinhead
I can't believe I'm saying this, but a flying head with a lens flare would look better than that.
-
Did you notice they got lazy with the Trek's after that and just reused Goldsmith's music in every movie? Bad.
-
I love Giacchino's work, but the track titles give off the feeling that he wasn't really taking this all that seriously. I know I'm wrong on that, but I just really hope that Hella was the name of the bar. If not, no hard feelings, but I'll be very disappointed.
-
I love Horner's score, especially the music they play when the Enterprise comes home in Star Trek 3 (always gets me a bit misty eyed that Kirk brought the old girl home.). When I watched the beginning of Star Trek: Nemesis, the music and opening shot looked like the Transformers movie (1986). Anyone else agree?
-
ilove Giacchino's work too, but don't be fooled by the wacky track titles. He does that a lot-check out the track titles for the Lost soundtracks-wacky track titles but great music!!
-
Meh. I want to hear more, that's for sure.

My posts weren't jokes and weren't offensive so why are they gone? Why bother giving serious thought and response to what you read here on AICN if it just disappears?

I was replying to the review of the music not this! Sorry I got confused!

... a composer have fun with song titles. They must be reverential and serious as a stroke about our lord and saviour, Star Trek, at all times. Sheesh. Lighten up already!
-
Two Steps to Hell website has trailer though you can't download it
-
Not the one that was released in stores, either. The total score for Nemesis is unreal, absoultely amazing. I'd put it in the top 4 amongst Trek soundtracks.
-
Whoever approved that shit should be fired immediately. That's not a final poster, that's a fucking teaser poster. Dumbasses.
-
Are almost always tongue in cheek...what's the fuss? And Zilabeast, YES, the complete Nemesis score is excellent, just fabulous work. I am looking forward to the score. It isn't fair to judge Giacchino just on the basis of him not being Goldsmith...who is these days? At least it won't be the happy hobbit music Rosenmann tossed into Trek 4, for heaven's sake...
-
Wow - Star Wars without John Williams, that's Double Plus Good.

"Welcome to Costco, I love you." -
Sorry, couldn't resist...
-
Does anyone else think Giacchino may be somewhat of a one-trick pony? The start of that cue sounds like it's been lifted straight out of LOST...
-
Does every score Giacchino compose need to sound like Lost?? I mean seriously, is he just incapable of mixing it up a little?
-
It's like he imagines "what great musical piece would fit this scene?" and then sort of Mad Libs it into something newish. Not so much for Lost, but you could spot his "homages" all over Incredibles. I don't know if that makes him a genius or not. It certainly guarantees something listenable.
-
some people will bitch about any-fracking-thing.
-
Being a huge movie-soundtrack collector, I believe the THE WRATH OF KHAN and STAR TREK-THE MOTION PICTURE stand out as the two best ST movie soundtracks. Also FIRST CONTACT (especially the two-disc edition with the extra Joel Goldsmith tracks, if you can find it) stands out. Scores should always blend into the film as much as the players and settings. Thanks goodness that this soundtrack isn't a "rock 'n roll" and is symphonic in nature.

"Does every score Giacchino compose need to sound like Lost?"
by nasty in the pasty
Ratatoullie and The Incredibles sound nothing like Lost. Giacchino is essentially a gifted pastiche artist (007/John Barry for Incredibles, Godzilla/Akira Ifukube for Cloverfield, Planet Of The Apes/Jerry Goldsmith for the more agitated moments of Lost, ect.), but with the ABYSSMAL quality of today's film scoring field, I'll take a fully-orchestrated throwback to good, old-fashioned 70's and 80's blockbuster scoring to droning crap like The Dark Knight or Transformers any day of the week.
-
That last episode had some particularly outstanding cues. In a good way too. The choices of instrumentation were often more intriguing than the show.
But I think the bottom line is you won't ever love everything an artist does. Whether it's Giacchino or Goldsmith; Abrams or Whedon; Bay or Spielberg - to say everything they've done is rubbish is as ill-informed as saying everything they've done is brilliant. Sorry if I seem a bit off topic but damn if this site and talkbacks don't need some reason to balance all the hyperbole. -
... has anyone caught the ads for the Day The Earth Stood Still DVD, featuring the original movie!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
-
At what point does something go from being inspired by, to being derivative of a previous work? I would say that if you can take an existing style write in it in such a way that evokes the original without copying it, then that's inspiration. Giacchino's work falls solidly into the "inspired by" camp. The best way to describe his work, to my ear, is to say that "you've heard this before, but you've never heard it THIS way before." He's showing he can write in a myriad of styles, and adapt to what a film needs and creating fresh, new things which are at once both familiar, new and exciting. Is there anyone here who would confuse the theme from "The Incredibles" to one of John Barry's Bond scores when played side by side?
-
A shame he never got to. His score for Raise the Titanic was AMAZING and would have fit PERFECTLY with Star Trek.
-
The man is brilliant, but he's retired, no? What was the last thing he scored?
-
Definitely what Giacchino should be aiming for.
-
is that the music for Lost, M:I:III and the snippet of Star Trek on the web site all sound like Giacchino.
Like Goldsmith, Williams and Elfman, he is a chameleon with a specific style of his own. -
I miss him and wish like hell he'd do one last James Bond movie. We haven't heard Barry's "007" theme since Moonraker.

Since the Whole Movie Appears To Have Been Shot in Shakeycam
by writefromleft
...which makes me car sick, I guess listening to the score is the closest I'll come to seeing the movie. I'll just make up the plot in my head.
-
His style was plodding, boring & monotonous like most of the films he worked on I hated movies just BCUS of his scores.
-
Just sayin'.
-
I'm not at all a trek fan. Star warsa fan only but I have heard goldsmith's themes for trek and this sucks ass compared to him. As far as I'm concerned goldsmith is 2nd to williams. I will be forever grateful to golsmoth for gremilns and gremilns 2 soundtracks
-
I'm assuming you've heard the score? Or seen the movie? How, from one short clip and no knowledge of the music in context, do you know it sucks?
-
How does it feel to have no taste?
-
was the last great Bond score, John Barry's last.

In Bishop6's defense, I didn't like Barry to begin with
by nasty in the pasty
When I first started collecting soundtracks in the early 90's, I found his music to be "too slow" and "ponderous" (especially compared to the manic energy of the best Williams and Goldsmith action cues), but I eventually "got" Barry towards the end of the decade, and am now a big fan. Barry's hook was playing THROUGH the action, rather than Mickey Mouse-ing every on-screen visual cue, which is why his 007 scores still hold up. David Arnold's work in okay, but his action cues are SO frenetically dense, flailing away in every direction whenever Bond does anything more than walk briskly, that they quickly become numbing. No matter how silly the action got in the later Connery and Moore pictures, Barry cut through the cheese and provided a sense of moody dignity to those films (much like Akira Ifukube did for the old Toho monster movies). Arnold does an adequate recreation of Barry's Bond schtick (the "wah-wah" brass, the repeating chord progressions, ect.), but the man has NEVER come up with a simple melody as good as anything Barry has done for the series.
-
...c'mon, RapidShare!
-
"Generations." Dennis McCarthy created memorable cues and a kick-ass theme.

This story is nothing more than an advert for the Star Trek soun
by rickyshoresingstheblues
Remember when this site was gossip? Now all of the stories on AICN are advertisements. AICN isn't gossip, it's not like Perez Hilton anymore. Nowadays, AICN is more like Entertainment Tonight, where public relations representatives for the major studios cobble together stories for AICN to present as their own. Every soundtrack that comes out gets promoted on this site. Why? Are you really into movie scores? Is Harry? This site didn't used to shamelessly hock movie tie-in merchandise. Harry sold his integrity. AICN is nothing but commercials. Don't read it. CHECK OUT RICKY SHORE SINGS THE BLUES INSTEAD
-
Is that from this soundtrack, or somewhere else? If so, what?
Aside from the ST II soundtrack, I'm not too much a fan of Horndoggie. A lot of his music is borrowed from previous soundtracks he's done. Even ST II borrows heavily from the one he did for Battle Beyond the Stars. -
With cue titles such as 'Nailin' the Kelvin', 'Labour of Love', 'Nice to Meld You' and 'That New Car Smell' I'd be really interested to hear about what you come up with in your head.
-
Nailin’ the Kelvin, Nice To Meld You, Does It Still McFly?,Back From Black,That New Car Smell. WHO THE HELL CAME UP WITH THESE TITLES? That clip on You Tube damn well put me to sleep. It's BORING. WHERE'S THE ADVENTURE? WHERE'S THE FUN? This stuff sounds depressing. like Nazis marching the Jews to the ovens in a WWII flick or something. It's ain't STAR TREK.
