New Johnny To trailer for VENGEANCE looks like sweet velvet awesome!!!

Published at:  Apr 11, 2009 5:56:18 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Johnny To, for Hong Kong lovers, kinda helped keep Hong Kong action alive when Tsui Hark and John Woo and Ringo Lam got woo'd with Western budgets and stars. And I still remember the glorious day that I first sat down to watch FULLTIME KILLER... and I came away with the biggest smile upon my face. He's done a lot of wonderful work... unfortunately he's also done some less than great work - but this trailer is a promise of badassery - and I'm giddy now. The great folks and sometimes partners in online cinema geekery, TwitchFilm.net uncovered this jewel and I couldn't wait for Todd to send in the next INTERNATIONAL EYE CANDY column - so I just had to run with it. I know it says UNAVAILABLE on the below embed, but if you press play... it works, I promise. At least it does for me. Here ya go...

Throwdown is an excellent film. He definitely has a unique style that somewhere between Woo and Fellini. Heh.

    Extreme Pussy Pounding

    by hyphenatedwords

That's what's missing in movies these days. Sex scenes are always of three types: slow and sensual to show the bond, fast and frantic to show the passion, or... rape. The shot of the dude ramming his girl in this trailer is just full-on,balls to the wall pussy pounding. Way to be, Johnny To!

    "Breaking News"

    by raymond shaw

My favorite Johnnie To sequence is the long, one take, opening shot in Breaking News. There's a nice little bit of business with a piece of paper that blows off a balcony (if I remember right) and then sticks on the windshield of the police stakeout car.

This looks very promising...more Exiled than Election I think.

to Raymond:Yeah that long take in Breaking News is really cool,...I was thinking if newspaper thing was on purpose or just accident...
Though my favorite sequence is first 10 minutes of Exiled when gangsters are preparing for showdown and there is this great music playing in background...

Johnnie To Makes the Coolest Gangster Films..

    by henryhill76

since Jean Pierre Melville. No joke. I stumbled across his film "Throwdown" about 5 years ago and have binged on his films ever since. Everyone should see "The Mission" from the late 80's. There's a shoot out scene in that one (taking place in a mall with an escalator) that's beyond words. And "Breaking News". Hell, just see everything this guy does!

Johnny To does some great work

    by koolahtah

I caught the Johnny To bug from AICN a while back on talk back recommendation about Exiled. I can't say enough about this movie, it plays out like an old western in a modern day setting. The score that goes along with this movie is really one of my top favorites. One of the things I really enjoy about Johnny To's work is how he can make a run down Hong Kong apartment block look beautiful. He has an amazing eye for cinematography which gets better with each movie. His last movie Sparrow, although not fast paced, was a real treat. I'm surprised he does not get more love from film geeks on this side of the pond, because you can see he actually cares about making movies.

    To and Milkyway Recommendations

    by harry weinstein

Many of the To/Milkyway films that you ought to watch are out of print or only available on shitty quality DVDs. Grab them if you're lucky enough to encounter them. 1 - TOO MANY WAYS TO BE NO. 1, produced by To and Wai Ka-fai and directed by Wai (a Golden Harvest release currently being held hostage by Warner Bros.) 2 - A HERO NEVER DIES, directed by To and Wai (the truly awful HK disc is probably still in print) 3 - THE LONGEST NITE, a brutal and efficient crime story credited to Patrick Yau but mostly directed by To (again, you can probably still find the lousy decade-old Hong Kong release).
