Capone REALLY wants to see X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE at a drive-in theater. How about you?

Published at:  Apr 10, 2009 10:31:24 PM CDT

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here, with my postscript on the whole X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE leak, and how at least one theater owner is attempting to turn this slightly depressing turn of events into a positive.

For the record, I have never in my life downloaded or streamed a movie from the Internet in my life. It’s not even that I’m morally opposed to the practice; I just can’t ever imagine a scenario where I’d want to watch a film with sub-par video quality on a tiny screen. Doesn’t interest me, and likely never will. I haven’t read a single review of the WOLVERINE footage, nor will I. As much as I’m forced sometimes to watch sanctioned screeners of films in order to review them, simply because there aren’t enough hours in a day to attend all the screenings that take place in Chicago, I still cherish the experience of going to a theater more than just about anything else. And I, unlike a lot of critics, love watching movies with the general public, whether it’s at an advanced screening or going back to see a movie I liked the first time around with a paying crowd. The minuses are many—chatty patrons, phone lights and ringers, bad parents who bring their infant children to THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, bad sound and picture quality—and they seem to happen in various combinations today more than ever. But damnit, I still love see a movie big, loud, and with the smell of concessions in the air. That’s never going to change.

So when I saw the news that a quality print of WOLVERINE had leaked, my first thought was that perhaps Fox would really benefit from doing everything in its power to promote the practice of seeing film—any film—in the theater setting. Perhaps they would book more advanced press or paid screening of WOLVERINE, something, anything, to get butts in seats and remember how much fun the beginning of the summer movie season can be. Hell, I even asked if we could do an AICN screening in Chicago, but I’ve heard nothing definitive, so I’m guessing it ain’t happening. But the offer/request is still out there.

Growing up on the East Coast, one of my fondest memories of the summer was driving the extra distance to one of two drive-in theaters near the city where I grew up. I recall seeing most of the Disney classics for the first time on what seemed to be the biggest screen I’d ever seen at one of the local driven-ins. I always loved piling in the car with the family and checking out these films on the weekend, and I’ve held a great sadness in my heart at the virtual extinction of the drive-in movie-going experience. It pains me that there are a couple of generations behind me that have never seen a film this was, under the stars. I remember seeing one of the FRIDAY THE 13TH sequels at a dive-in, and finding it hilarious that you could hear screams coming from across the parking lot. Watching horror films outdoors is the most glorious experience in the world.

Now, I’m sure most of you are aware of the contest that X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is having a contest to determine where the film’s premiere will be held. You just go to This Site, type in your zip code, and if your city gets the most votes, that’s where the premiere happens—with Hugh Jackman attending. Last I heard, Chicago was in the Top 10, but I actually had an idea in mind to revive, at least temporarily, two great traditions: see film in theaters and seeing them at the Drive-In.

There’s this wonderful, rehabbed drive-in theater in Dixon, Illinois (birthplace of Ronald Reagan!), due west of Chicago in the center of the state. It’s called the Midway Drive-In, and I just want to throw out the idea to the folks from this part of the nation that I’d love to watch X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE at a drive-in theater. The zip code for the Midway is 61021, and even if you don’t live around Chicago, you can still vote. The contest ends Friday, April 17, and the city where the premiere will be held will be announced on Monday, April 20. The actually screening is supposed to take place on Monday, April 27.

Now, obviously, if you don’t live around here, this doesn’t do you much good. So here’s what you should do: find out if there’s a drive-in near you and submit that theater’s zip code. My purpose here is not just to promote the Midway Drive-In, but the few remaining drive in's in existence. I guess the real question is, will Fox honor their commitment to showing films on the big screen even if that big screen is outdoors. I sure hope so, because I can’t imagine having a better time at the movies than seeing Hugh Jackman introduce WOLVERINE in front of hundreds of people at a drive-in.

Thanks for your indulgence. Good Luck 61021!

Heres my beef with critics defending studios..

    by frenchbastard03

..against piracy. I for one agree that I can't stand watching something with shoddy quality being streamed online. However, critics tout the "movie going experience" when they're experiences are A)Free, B)Usually with a crowd of fellow respectful non texting critics, and C) FREE. But nowadays tickets are averaging around 10 bucks a person to see a movie. If you have a family of 3, that makes 30 buckaroos, or much more than the eventual DVD/Blu Ray release. In today's economy, it just doesn't make sense to spend so much money on 2 hours worth of entertainment for your family. So the obvious choice would be to just wait to rent/buy right? But sometimes the hype just gets to you and you can't help having everyone see a movie that you've vowed to wait for on DVD, and that's why I believe people turn to piracy and why critics, like Capone here, like to toot their own moral horns by saying they have no want to pirate movies. Of course they don't, because they're seeing movies themselves earlier than everyone else and free-er than everyone else. So just stop the bullshitting with this story. Critics and consumers are in two totally separate places here, and to try and argue on the side of the consumer is just silly to me. That is all. End rant.

  • Weapon-X is a cheap way of filling the box office coffer because of fan allegiance. Instead of taking time and developing an interesting story with great pacing, dialogue, action, and intrigue, Marvel keeps trying to pump out garbage. How many times do they have do Hulk origins and Punisher over again or Fantastic Four. It is a joke. They are just trying to line their pockets. They don't care about the characters or the audience, so screw them. I hope they FAIL.

Tiny Computer Screen? That's Why You Hook It Up To A TV

I've heard the tiny computer screen argument dozens of times so I'm not picking on you Steve.

I rarely watch movies/downloaded content on my computer screen because I hook my laptop up to the television.

    by industrykiller!

Only a compelte moron could enjoy this on any level. It's in the dregs of comic book movie hell with Ghost Rider and Elektra. It has some of the worst performance I've ever seen in a comic film, completely ignoring established character at every turn and somehow making even the most over the top comic book trappings seem even MORE immature. It's WORSE than X3. WORSE THAN X3. It's like they tried to make it that horrible.

..get to the drive in at least once a summer but they are getting more endangered every year and the ones hanging on are mostly poor, neglected shadows of their former selves. That was a great experience as a kid no doubt.

As for the rebuttal on piracy tossed out above I'd buy it a little more readily if I thought for a second that pirates were PRIMARILY people towing 2-3 rugrats out to a night at the movies and lamenting the price of it all. The "information should be free" crowd usually means "I want it for free and if I can help myself anonymously I will." One hopes something sustainable will emerge because a good segment of movie fans does want to use the internet to get movies but like you Cap I prefer the theatre (and the experience of things like the drive-in etc).

Amen, brother. The only reason the critics (especially the AICN crew) defend the studios is because they wish to continue to receive their "pwesents" of free advanced screenings, VIP visits to the sets, meeting famous directors and actors, and all the other swag from their corporate masters. Not to mention, AICN needing all the juicy ad revenue that feeds into this site from the studios.

and as neat as it sorta was to go back after so many years, i'll always prefer a theater. as comfy as your car may be to drive around, when you're stuck in it for 4-5hrs straight to watch a movie, it gets constricting and annoying. not to mention no car speaker, no matter how good, can sound as great as a theater's sound system. but hey thats just my opinion.

And I'd have hot chick dressed as Orion slave-girls wandering the lot selling concessions. Yeah,yeah...I know it'll never happen. Still it would be cool if someone gave drive-ins the Alamo Drafthouse treatment....

    by orbots commander

...a stock 'pump and dump' scheme. A hint of the level of badness is that the flick opens in a couple weeks, yet Fox hasn't screened it yet for any press, mainstream media or online. If Fox thought that they had a great movie on their hands, they'd be yelling it from the rooftops and screening it for one and all to get word out. And this is one of their main tent-pole flicks of the year.

FrenchBastard and ScarStar, I reluctantly understand your points

    by the reluctant austinite

While I certainly do not advocate piracy, you guys have made me think. I was a film critic for a liberal rag for several years, and I've seen both sides of the fence. It's true, being "one of the chosen" does alter your reality. For example, most of the AICN guys have already seen "Star Trek" (for free) and are on to other early screenings of the Summer output. There is never a lack of something new and exciting to watch when you'refilm critic. You get lots of screeners and DVDs for free too. So it's not like a regular film fan who works 40 hours a week and has to wait for new stuff to come out and pay for the (many times) frustrating experience of seeing a film in a theater full of crying babies, cell phones lit up everywhere (this happens EVERY time I go to the movies in my town)and 15 annoying commericals before the previews (you don't have to watch those in critics' screenings). This, however, doesn't make stealing a film right. I love the nature of film too much to want to hurt the film makers who bust their asses to make these films. All I'm saying is that I see your side of the argument.

The Drive-In still in operation near me is the Georgetown Drive-In in New Albany, IN. We've had a couple of cool screenings there in the last couple of years. Last year they screened "Phantasm" with all the central cast members. if you meant in Austin, I don't know; that's why I'm the Reluctant Austinite. I'm not living there! You do know that it's not 1997 anymore, right? There are 1080p versions of most movies that are out on video available for those that want it and hooking up your computer to your TV and surround sound system has never been easier. Not condoning it, just saying the "...sub-par video quality on a tiny screen" argument isn't factual accurate anymore. Argue the morality and bandwidth, not the quality and view screen.

    I say "Download it"

    by tippida

Just to give you a little background, I'm a low to no risk investment kind of guy. When I invest my time and or money in something I want to know its good before I do, I've been sucked in too many times by films that look good in trailers/source material but fail miserably to deliver. For the record, I don't download movies either (not because I'm high and mighty, but because my download quota doesn't allow for it, and I wont bother trying to justify the additional expense of upgrading my quota) but I have friends that do, and I flip them some coin and get them to burn me discs every now and again.I check it out, then the quality stuff gets my money.. the stuff I don't like, I don't see at the cinema, I might get it on DVD if I think its borderline and I'll give it a second chance.. Wolverine, despite being unfinished is amateurish, stupid and just plain WRONG. Therefore it will not get my money. However, I saw burned copies of movies like WATCHMEN, DUPLICITY, FROST/NIXON, WALL-E, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, and LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and ended up seeing them all at least twice in cinemas, and I will likely buy the BluRays when they come out (if I haven't already). Movies like WOLVERINE, UNDERWORLD 3, PUNISHER SHIT ZONE, MUMMY 3, TWEENLIGHT, etc, will not get my money. I watched them from burned dvd's and did not feel the least bit guilty that I didn't pay for the privilage. Studios, moral of the story is, if you want people to pay for it, don't make shit films. Thanks for your time.

TiPPiDa has it right, Wolverine does't deserve money

    by industrykiller!

It's an awful cynical film from back to front. The shoehorning in of character for NO FUCKING reasons like Gambit, Blob (one of the worst scenes in comic film history) and White Queen is not only terrible from a script standpoint but clearly just a cheap ploy to get fanboys to see it. The film doesn't deserve to make money. It does deserve TONS of people downloading it and telling their friends not to see it. That's just a fact. We want better films right? Then lets send a message.

I have a 24 inch 1080p monitor and Audioengine A2 desktop speakers. That alone is better than the 19 inch TV I watched movies on at home for years. I can sit at my desk with my headphones on and have a great movie watching experience. Wolverine sucks. Drive in theaters are great if you live someplace where night time temps are moderate. Try visiting one in Louisiana in the summer. Sweaty and mosquito ridden are not how I like my filmgoing experience.

  • Get TVeristy and send the Xvid/Dvix file to the PS3 and it plays it original file format with no quality degredation. Or the PS3 web-browser may be very user-unfriendly but it can stream things. Or just get a DVD player that plays Dvix files and burn it to CD and PRESTO! No need to be stuck on a monitor. I haven't done this for Wolverine, nor will I DL it before it's release date. Only because the movie isn't finished, and I wanna see the finished product.

I'll probably catch this in the summer when it comes to my drive-in. We're out here in the country, an hour from the nearest theaters. From May to early October we have a drive-in five minutes away. Lets us get caught up on movies we've missed. Double features every weekend! Come to Fork Union VA, 23055!

So every movie used to suck if you watched it on VHS on a TV? That's nonsense...a quality film has a compelling story and interesting characters and great dialogue. Wolverine has none of this and will suck in IMAX as well as on a laptop screen.

"sub-par video" Is a GREAT filter for crap.

    by darkplanet

Although nothing beats the theater sometimes "sub-par video" allows you to get to the core of a movie. If it still speaks to you from under the digital noise and mono sound, then chances are its a great movie. If I'm watching something online that captures me in the first 15 minutes I usually stop watching and wait for a rental.Or conversely, I'm so enamored by the film I watch the whole thing (because I cant stop) and wait with baited breath to purchase it or see it on the big screen. Like being half blind and putting on glasses for the first time, that can be a real treat too.

    by hollywoodplant

That is a tough question eh? You know, I for one have seen rough cuts of big films over and over again, and then still went to see the same movies in the theatres. And to see them again, I’ve come straight home and downloaded them. So, the big bosses still get my money. I never buy food at the theatre though. We always buy candy or food and sneak it in. So, that cuts coast right there.
I do have a friend who only downloads movies he isn’t that excited about anyway. He’s lost his job late last year, and he’s freaking out about not having money to see the big summer movies. Wolverine is on the top of his list (I’m taking him and paying).
There is always going to be piracy in the film business. It fucking even happens from the inside. But you know what, it’s not going to hurt’em as much as they say it will. Not going to happen. They will still be able to pay their hardworking actors millions of bank.
    To each their own.

    Downloading movie

    by series7

I lived in the middle east for two years, during which I was in like middle school. So movies were huge, and it was my first introduction to AICN. That being said the only way we could see movie was on the bases movie theater the rarely ever got anything good or new (though I did get to see Event Horizon and Dark City there) plus is was shitty as hell and small or the one local theater that was like a half hour away and only had like two screens. The only movie I remember seeing there was Peacemaker and Tomorrow Never Dies. Or wait until they came out on VHS, which back then took close to half a year or more. SO the main way people watched movies over there was on illegal black market crappy video recordings in a theater copies. Me being a huge movie nerd HAD to see all the new stuff right away. I saw SO many movies that way, I mean it wasn't the normal, you went into a local video store and asked for the black book and pretty much the Hollywood top ten was in there and they would give you a copy, the rest of the store was plastered head to toe with Bollywood stuff. I saw Titanic that way and Alien 4 that way. So I kind of got used to watching movies that way. But hey right before I left the mall built this big ass theater with like 6 nice screens and I stopped going downtown for the bootlegs. I saw Matrix back to back their, A Bugs Life, Shakespeare in Love with the sex scene cut out, same with Meet Joe Black. I mean I remember seeing the movies more in that theater then I do the 100's of movies I watched on bootleg VHS. I remember my buddy got me copies of the 6th Sense WAY before it came out and I didn't finish it because I thought it was boring. You can't really go to blockbuster and asked to see their black book, shit they don't even have back rooms anymore.

    by shan

"Taken" with Liam Neeson was first released about 11 months before its US release and was freely available on legally purchasable DVDs for months before its US release. It still made a huge amount of money in the US on cinema release.

So if people think "Wolverine" is any good, it'll still do very well, workprint release or not. However, if people think it's not very good, then it won't and the makers only have themselves to blame for that.

    Drive-Ins...

    by zaphodbeeblerox

Growing up, we had 3 multi screen drive-ins within an 8 mile stretch on the same road. Now they're all gone, having been sold for the land. A good friend of mine bought and reopened a closed drive-in because it was something he loved doing. The overwhelming majority of drive-ins are privately owned by people who do it as a passion and not to get rich. Depending on the admission price, most drive-ins dont make enough to survive off the cost of your ticket, most of that money goes right back to the studios, especially if they're running new releases on the break. In order for this unique piece of Americana to survive, they need more then the cost of a ticket. Consider visiting the snack bar / concession stand instead of bringing in your own food. Most drive-ins only have an operating window realistically from April through September with the bulk of their season occurring on summer weekends when school is out. Out of that 3 or 4 month period, Fridays and Saturdays are the main nights for business since many adults have to work during the week. Factor in the possibility of inclement weather as well and you can see that there really isnt a large time frame to allow drive-ins to make the funds that they need to be able to survive. With the advent of digital cinema on the horizon many, MANY drive-ins wont be able to afford the new equipment needed to be able to make the transition from film and they very well may become all but a memory within our lifetime. If you're fortunate enough to have a drive-in near your community and you attend it, consider buying from the snack bar there instead of bringing your own food in. Yes, its only a hot dog, hamburger or pop corn to you, but to them it is the means to allow them to continue operating. I dont have any monetary interest in a drive-in, I just hear first hand the unique challenges they face compared to their indoor theater cousins.

Supposedly different people in this thread say almost exactly the same thing over and over. Methinks some are actually the same troll. I hate it when people do that. The film may well be crap - I refuse to judge based on the opinions of pirates watching a version that is not even close to the version that will screen later this month. Especially the opinions of people who appear to be so insecure that they post their opinions under multiple guises to try to make it seem that a lot of people agree with them.

...is bogus. Pirated copies of IRON MAN & THE DARK KNIGHT were almost instantly available upon their release, yet audiences kept returning to theaters to see both these films, which made a mint each. If WOLVERINE is any good (which I doubt) and gets fantastic word of mouth, it'll be huge; if it sucks, it'll have a big opening weekend due to a marketing push, then sink faster than a mobster tied to a cement block in the Hudson River.

    by ninpobugei

Yes, I've seen it and it is shockingly horrible. I was REALLY looking forward to this movie. I even thought X3 was watchable...and enjoyable movie that could have been much better accounting for the story matter they covered. But WOLVERINE is in a category all its own...just ridiculous. And it's a shame because it started really well...but then it degraded to absolute silly nonsense. My wife and I were appalled! Gambit is barely used and his actions make zero sense. Deadpool was barely used and his turn as "Weapon XI" was just laughable (it's the big fight scene that lasts for all of about 10 minutes at the end of the movie). Sabertooth - lame. Wolverine - his same old self; just a brawler, not a trained fighter despite working for an elite military group. NONE OF IT MADE ANY SENSE!!!! It was an atrocious movie that looked like it was made for 13-year-olds. ABSOLUTELY avoid this movie at all costs. If you must see it (and I promise you will hate yourself if you do), see it only at a matinee so your money doesn't fund more abortions like this movie. Someone else mentioned that this movie is BATMAN & ROBIN bad and I have to agree. IT. REALLY. IS. THAT. BAD...no saving grace whatsoever (and remember, I was really looking forward to seeing this and figured the early negative buzz was overdone...boy was I wrong!!!).

All the more reason to see it at a drive-in. They're made for bad movies. The six-screen drive in here in San Jose, CA costs six bucks to get in. It's packed every weekend, which makes for a fantastic environment to watch movies, especially shitty ones. They play first run movies starting at dusk, followed by a second feature, then the first-run movies again. Which means that if you're willing to stay up until three in the morning, you can get three relatively recent movies for six bucks a person. Even if you get two out of three turds you're still paying less than you would at the theater.

I think the entire franchise has just been raped. My favorite comics with SOOOOO many good stories already written and this is the best they can come up with? I would rather watch the new Hulk movie than watch any of the X movies. It's just sad to me with so many good stories already written they can keep taking such crap to the well and filming it. It blows my mind and suprises the crap out of me that they do it. I never thought the casting was bad and even saw some glimmers of hope in X2, especially with Colossus, but the rest is pretty much a huge shit cake. I don't say this so much with hatred as disappointment. The most I can pray for is after seeing the direction they are taking with Iron Man they can find someone who is who truly passionate about the work and let them turn a good story into a good movie. This latest attempt was just an abortion.

    Drive-Ins FTW

    by fathermcgruderkicksassforthelord

Glad to read someone trumpeting their continued existence!

Like one of the commenters above, I too saw Star Wars in full drive-in glory and it stands as my earliest memory in life (I was 2).

I lived in Florida for over a decade and there are no drive-ins there, to my knowledge, so I started to think that they had died out everywhere. Upon moving to the Pittsburgh area, I discovered that drive-ins are very much alive and well, at least in PA.

Also, FWIW, I agree that the "small screen viewing radii" arguments re: film piracy are beyond pointless - as I type this missive on a 42" full HD Sharp Aquos expanded desktop-type environment. I know not everyone has a similar rig, but seriously, this particular reasoning is like saying that people shouldn't pirate movies because it just takes o darned long over this 28.8K modem. Amirite?

    by rei-ginsei

It's funny - I moved from PA to FL. We used to go to the drive-in all the time when I was a kid, so the lack of drive-ins here saddened me. I managed to find one drive-in (that doubled as a flea market during the day) about 45 minutes from me in Ocala, FL. Summer nights are too muggy, but there's that nice window in Spring when you take the pickup truck, throw some sleeping bags in the back, grab some snacks (you can bring whatever you want as long as you don't bring glass bottles - of course, I brought beer - and no, I wasn't driving) and watch two movies back-to-back for $5 a person (or $5 per car during the weekdays).
Damn...now I want to go to the drive-in...

Why mix a great idea with a crap movie?!

    by robert.thekilled

Capone, seriously, this film is horrid. You need not download the film to know this. Pick another film and we're there! and fuck FOX.

    Playkins...dude...DUDE!

    by ninpobugei

Seriously, I honestly believe they will not markedly change WOLVERINE to the extent that the movie would need. Notice I said NO redeeming qualities. How - exactly - would you go about reshooting BATMAN & ROBIN to make it better...to make it even tolerable?!?! WOLVERINE is one of those movies you stumble across that is just laughably bad. And it wasn't bad just because the work print didn't have all the FX finished. It had around 80-90% of that finished and it really didn't take away from the film. It was the story, the piss-poor characters, the ridiculous use of Sabertooth, Deadpool and Gambit (all wasted). Then the off-tone use of the Blob came out of nowhere and was just SO bad. Honestly, you can't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse anymore than you can make a shitfest like WOLVERINE into a watchable movie. I'm just doing my part to not only save fans from wasting their money, but also from financing more of this garbage! I'm serious when I say that this movie will have you asking to rewatch X3...it's that bad.

How to reshoot Batman & Robin - that would make a great contest. It's such a hilarious idea - what could you possibly shoot, with the exception of an entirely different movie - to make that good? Thank you for that.

What If Matthew Vaughn Had Directed It...

    by mf_christopher_lambert

    BOOM!!!!! (explosion in pants)

What if Woody Harrelson had played Sabretooth, I think his BS Zombieland excuse would have actually been a little more believable.....

What if they leaked it on purpose? They knew the film wouldn't satisfy the fanboys so they leaked the workprint. This way, if the film does mediocre sales they can blame it all on the net...

    What if....

Please Fox don't cancel it!! bring it back. You owe me this for Arrested Development. (though if were at all possible to bring AD back I would be happy to sacrifice this show)

TAKEN, as Shan said above is the example

    by palimpsest

I live in the UK, where TAKEN came out last September. The movie did pretty well, and I saw it in the cinema. The movie was available online though various dubious means worldwide well before the US release (I know, as I downloaded it.) As of today's BoxOfficeMojo numbers the film's earned $140m in domestic US alone. Not bad for a fairly straightforward (though earnest and well-casted and directed) revenge flick made by French guys with an Irish lead actor who's been playing mentor-ish character parts for the last decade. My suspicion is that Fox "allowed" the workprint to become leaked to engender an insurance claim if/when the film tanks. I've no investment in comic book movies (I'm not a reader of comics since the 80s, and that was largely SANDMAN and HELLBLAZER) - I just like good films. Yes, I've seen a copy of the leaked WOLVERINE workprint. It's not terrible as a movie, though I don't think it tells the audience anything they can't pick up from the first X-MEN film. Why should the casual/weekend movie-goer care about a third sequel to an eight year old comic book movie, no matter how cool the character? The X-MEN ORIGINS concept is flawed as it doesn't play to movie-goers; it plays to comic readers. Movie goers know the story enough, so don't need more unless it tells us something (which WOLVERINE absolutely does not). Comic readers know the story, so can only be disappointed or nod and stroke their chins. That was the WATCHMEN issue - the best you can do is replicate something that was already as good as the medium would allow it to be. Fact: a good mainstream movie, well-marketed, will make money. A good film, badly handled, will gain appreciation over time and through DVD/Bluray/TV sales will make money. A piece of shit which looks tasty to enough people will make money. A piece of shit which looks like a dirty brown turd will not. The moral? Make better films, and damn the consequences, piracy or not. Make movies so good that people will download them and then say "Shit, I got to see that in a cinema".

    There's a drive-in 2 miles from my house

    by tbransonlives

But it's owned by people who are really into the Jesus, so they only play family movies. It Kinda sucks, but I like to think I'm the only person in the world that's able to say they fingered a girl for the first time during Operation Dumbo Drop. Take that Jesus drive-in!

    This article makes no sence.

    by the outlander

If you want to see the film with good picture and sound and with the general public, why would you choose the drive-in? I'm starting to think this site should change its name to Ain't it Fox News. Wolverine is an average movie at best, don't waste your time.

The Taken arguement is not valid

    by tbransonlives

The intended audience for Taken is a lot different than that of Wolverine's. I'm willing to bet that a good bulk of the people that saw Taken wouldn't download a movie.

    Drive-Ins Fucking rock!

    by conspiracy

Out here in California...Drive-Ins were WHERE it was at in the 70-80's. As a kid my parents used to take us to see Disney films there...with pillows and pajamas...cuz that shit didn't start till 8pm and it was always a double feature...Saw Jason and the Argonots in the early mid 70s at a drive in...fucking bad ass!Later in life...you get a bunch of friends..some lawn fucking chairs...a big Igloo to mix up your jungle juice in...stroll over to the Fucking nasty concessions selling Space Pizza, and on the way back invite those chicks on the beach blankets in the mini-truck behind you to stop by for a tasty beverage...And make sure you have PLENTY of bottle rockets for intermission between films.Drive-Ins...the BEST!

If you love the character, you'll download this film

    by industrykiller!

It's as simple as that. You cannot claim to love the character of Wolverine or the X-Men and enjoy this film. The two things are just flat out diametrically opposed. It's a horrible film that bastardizes these characters and flagrantly butchers them in your face while laughing about the money you (hypothetically) payed to see it. Download it and show it to all your friends. This leak is the best thing that could happen to fans of comic books.

    leaky

    by loonatic

when i first got the workprint, i started to watch it and after 10 mins, when it was obvious that the effects weren't complete, i stopped. what i saw looked good enough for me to catch it on the big screen.

then i got bombarded by news of the leak, followed by the screamings on the net ... and harry's and moriarty's highly hypocritical screed against piracy ...

my curiosity overcame all my others senses. i had to watch the workprint!

watched it, no regrets. the unfinished effects didn't have a huge effect on the quality of the movie. neither a horrible movie nor a good one. slightly better than X3.

y'know capone, the more you , harry, moriarty, rothman try to discourage people from watching the workprint, the more they'd want to watch it [unless that is your intention]

I never bought the argument that people DL'ing stuff wouldn't have bought it anyway...if that's true then why interested in whatever is being DL'd in the first place (and let's be clear we aren't talking about sampling).

Like I said above something sustainable will hopefully emerge but the specious ways people defend they DL'ing habits is nauseating. I'd also like to see the people saying that DL'd films still make plenty of money in spite of pirating willing to cede an ever growing percentage of whatever it is they produce in their jobs for a living taken for free by whoever feels like doing it.

    More...Drive-In Memories

    by cripeman

I lived In Joilet back in the 60's on RT 6 just a little ways from a drive-in. Me and my step-dad would sneak in and check out movies then.

    Flash foreward. Moved away...came back.

I taught my son to drive in the same abandoned drive in.

    by notsosmiley

Haven't been to the Midway drive-in and I'm sure it's fine, but Cascade is good and closer into the city, more of a central location overall really. No offense but it would seem the better choice.

The 49-er Drive-In is a little bit closer to Chicago than the Midway. I don't mean to mess up Capone's plans, and divide the vote. It'd be really cool for a small town in Illinois to win this.

People in Chicago should know the 49-er anyways. It's a good place that I recommend. http://www.49erdrivein.com/
