A Stunning New Trailer for PUBLIC ENEMIES hits! CAN NOT WAIT!!!!!
Hey folks, Harry here - and here is a trailer to drool over! PUBLIC ENEMIES just looks absolutely fantastic here doesn't it? Can't wait for the trailer to be in Glorious Quicktime HD... alas - some whacked out partnership with tiny fucking video on Microsoft - well, it is slightly depressing - but I'd take this trailer however they wanted to show it to me. But hopefully soon it'll be fullscreen and perfect, eh?
Michael Mann has made this look fantastic!

looks like cool michael mann
-
Can't wait to see Johnny in action.
-
Well I can not view the trailer from work, but I tend to really like Michael Mann flicks so I am already interested in this. Throwing in Bale and Depp just pushes this to a must see, though I don't know if it will be in theaters or just a blind buy when the blu ray hits.
-
Score one more Oscar nod for Johnny Depp.
-
Oh man that was great!
-
Oh and that looks great. This is looking like one hell of a summer.
-
was Christian Bale going for. Sound like southern creole
-
makes the movie look a lot better than the first trailer.
-
Doesn't do it for me. Taking it right off my "jazz" list
-
I know its a true story and everything, but still, that was a really long trailer. I'm sure there is a lot more going on, but still...
-
...and I liked the first trailer. Looks like a cool epic period-Heat movie. Women always fuck things up in Mann-world.
-
Also, Mann is a god.
-
and now if been damned to hell. Sigh. This trailer reminded me of "The Untouchables", which got me thinking of DePalma's planned prequel. Did that project just die after Nic Cage bowed out or what?
-
This movie looks epic.
-
... and the 1st trailer was amazing!
-
if it didn't look like half of it was shot with a home video camera.
-
silly. Otherwise looks good.
-
I'm looking forward to this one.
-
What is that song that starts playing right after he says "I have absolutely nothing I want to do in Indiana" and the words "Based on a true story" come up on the screen?
-
... is a great (if very inaccurate, but who cares about that?) Dillinger flick in dire need of a DVD re-release, or an SE. Really cool cast, and a dynamite John Sayles script. Hopefully some bright spark will realise this and put it out to coincide with this flick. Speaking of which, there seemed to be barely any hint of the Biograph Theater (except of one shot of Depp in a cinema), Pamela (who I believe Leelee Sobieski is playing) or Anna, "The Lady In Red" herself in the trailer. Will be interesting to see how Mann pulls off the same story. No doubt it will be interesting to compare to Teague and Sayles' film.

...that came up with this one?
-
Deemphasizing the wide lense and handheld stuff that makes digital look like handycam. I'm there regardless, but oh how I wish Mann had gone with film, because this movie looks like it's going to be excellent. Dante Spinotti is a genius, but his work would have looked all the more brilliant if Mike had chosen celluloid.
-
I really do.
-
I like it. Surely it's not not Elliot Goldenthals original score, but I'd like to hear some of that on trailer 3.
-
So there you go.
-
Looking forward to this movie. Wonder what the running time is going to be.
-
Digital sucks. Like the whole movie was shot with 1000 dollar amateur DV cam...no matter how talented the people are behind the camera. That's just my opinion...
-
I can never get MSN Videos to to play. Never have that problem with any other site or video player. Anybody got any ideas why?
-
WILLY WONKA, BATMAN, DR. MANHATTAN AND FROST all directed by Mann. I'll watch it.

too bad the 360 degree shutter ruins almost every shot!
by StovetopStuffin'
Why does he insist on shooting with a 1/24 shutter instead of 1/48 or 1/60? It makes it look like a low budget indie film!
-
digital doesn't suck, slow shutter speed sucks. Digital can look beautiful, but Michael Mann likes to use slower shutters than film can achieve, which makes it look worse. I don't know how he can look at it and think it looks good.
-
kind of took me out. otherwise it looks good.
-
I think Mann can look at it and think it looks good for two reasons: 1) personal taste 2) he's a highly experienced, successful, and respected film-maker.
-
..they come off as cheap student films. I don't know exactly whats lost from going to digital from Film but it just FEELS cheap, grainy, the acting seems less polished? Its like a veil has been lifted and what we're left with is 2nd rate thearte production. Anyone else feel this? Secondly, this looks just like HEAT but in the fucking 20's. Pass.

do you seriously not know how to make the trailer fullscreen?
by blckmgk13
just saying...
-
sadly that looks like the best made for TV Hallmark movie ever, Mann better have some trick up his sleeve
-
Is just not doing it for me. Tone wise, this trailer is a big improvement, but that fucking digital is just really killing it for me.
-
Your computer has taste. That is all.
-
Quite the underrated soundtrack (and movie) if I say so myself.
-
It has that "REAL" look! can't wait!
-
A trailer should tease you, not recap the whole story and show all the highlights. But having said that, it looked like a good film.
-
I bet some studio exec planted this obvious trailer!
-
lets heat your pro's & cons for it then.
-
...is Calexico's "Black Heart" off the album Feast of Wire. Calexico is a fantastic band and I'm thrilled to see them get some love from a Mann project.
-
Michael Mann does know how to shoot a crime drama!
-
How is it bitching if everyone knows this would obviously look better on film? You really believe this looks the best it possibly could? That's pretty foolish if you ask me. Digital works for certain things and not for certain things: I don't think it works for this at all.
-
I'm having bad flash-backs of the 2nd act of Miami Vice.

One of my Favorite Actors(Depp) with my favorite Director.
by Darth_Kaos
I'm so there! Getting a little tired of Bale though. But Mann will make him look good.
-
This one is more like . . . Young Guns 2.
-
And thank God its there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uclFxBFbAQ
-
Don't call this thing a "film". It ain't.
-
at the end of 2009 this isn't my favorite movie of the year. It's kinda funny that Marion Cotillard is the only one with "Academy Award Winner" before their name. And I'll bet they turn John Dillinger into the new Tony Montana. You know, thugwise.
-
And this looks really beautiful and the tone seems right on. Love the magnesium powder flashes at the beginning. <P> I am not sure why Mann is using digital the way he is though... especially in low lighting conditions. I have seen demos of 24P digital compared to Super 35 and digital actually won most of the time - at least if you want a clean crisp looking image. So I'm confused as to why Mann's digital cinematography looks flat?! <P> Is anyone a camera op or DP out there that can shed some light on this?
-
No DPs who worked on this can shed any light on this. Their lights are trashed. Bale is in this. ;)
-
looks pretty good
-
LOL! I opened the door for that and didnt even realize it. LMFAO.
-
j edgar was going after bank robbers, while the mafia worked with impunity<p> and why not? hoover used to hang with those guys at the track

If they can't post it on Quicktime, I ain't a-watchin'
by DoctorZoidberg
-
"In the meantime!" *Throws finger in air and runs back to Street Fighter 4*
-
Particularly knowing Ribisi is in there somewhere too. If anyone's interested that first song that was playing is by Calexico, and their stuff is all pretty similar to that, and very very cool and cinematic.
-
Yup, this one is looking mighty good. I don't think Bale is going to have much to do though.
-
This one seems to give too much away and just isn't as powerhouse as the first one was. Also I'm still not a fan of this terrible film format he's going with. Fucking Mann's a twat these days. Still Depp looks like he's going to knock this one out of the park.
-
keep whining about the whiners. You can call Mann a revolutionary, but really this film format isn't very good. And it definitely doesn't work with a period-film like this.
-
in my poop "pop" !

Stunning new trailer...by which I mean about the same as the fir
by raystevensonwarzone
Why is AICN pimping this movie so hard? It looks good, not great.
-
I don't know. I just get cold chills from this movie.
-
"digital sucks". It's an over generalization that you've based on reading about Spielberg and how his editor works on film and blah blah blah. Public Enemies looks like shit because of the shutter speed he's using. Not because it's digital. Now, because he is using digital, he's able to use a shutter speed that is impossible to achieve with film. But just cause he can, doesn't mean he should. The smeariness of a shutter that is slower than 180 degrees (1/48 of a second) is what you are all seeing. and it blows.
-
...cause I just sprayed orange juice out of my nose laughing at your post. Good one, man. (And yeah, I'm stoked to see this. Mann, Deep, Bale, Goldenthal -- my butt will be in that theater seat on opening night.)
-
By knowing that Harry's current corner animation references "The Devil and Daniel Webster?"
-
.. i work in Photoshop all the fucking time and I didn't really notice anything amiss with the visuals, guess i'm not on the cutting edge of digital imagery. i'm admittedly shooting in the dark but maybe these visuals will be fine on a big screen? either way Michael Mann is awesome and Johnny Depp is awesome and Christian Bale has got a fire and i'm down.
-
He's such a good director, I almost didn't realize what a piece of shit Miami Vice was... then I listened to the dialogue and paid attention to the "plot". Still, I was distracted enough to be uncertain, so kudos Michael Mann! I'll check this out.
-
..this trailer has been praised
-
..S T I N K S

Jesus Fucking Christ shut the fuck up. Anytime a filmmaker deviates from the norm, you whiny bitches call them out on it. Yet, you complain that there's no originality left. Is every movie supposed to look exactly the same? Christ, do you even care whether or not the story and acting is good anymore?
-
Look at all the failed film majors complain about Michael Mann shooting in digital; are you the same douches that bitch about musicians not using analog anymore? Keep nay saying, you know damn well you'll be in the theater opening day. I'm especially annoyed at the mother-fucker that tried to bring up the lens's and shutter speeds as if they know what they're talking about.
-
to make a f'ing cartoon. That's when you'll hear me complain b/c that man is too talented to be wasting time making cartoons for adults. Mann on the other hand, has just about a perfect track record imo. Even Miami Vice and that wasn't all his fault. Jamie Foxx totally bitched out and had the ending changed b/c he is scared for his safety. "The film, shot on location in the Caribbean, South America, and South Florida, lost seven days of filming to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.[6] The delays led to a budget of what some insiders claimed to be over $150 million, though Universal Studios says it cost $135 million.[2] Several crew members criticized Mann's decisions during production, which featured sudden script changes, filming in unsafe weather conditions, and choosing locations that "even the police avoid, drafting gang members to work as security."[2] Foxx was also characterized as unpleasant to work with. Foxx refused to fly commercially, forcing Universal to give him a private jet. Foxx would not participate in scenes on boats or planes. After gunshots were fired on set in the Dominican Republic on October 24, 2005, Foxx packed up and refused to return; this forced Mann to re-write the ending of the film, an ending that some crew members characterized as less dramatic than the original.[2] Foxx, who won an Academy Award after signing to do Miami Vice, was also reputed to complain about co-star Farrell's larger salary, something Foxx felt didn't reflect his new status as an Oscar winner. Foxx received an increase in salary to match Farrell's. It was also reported that Foxx demanded top billing after winning an Oscar.[2] Mann wanted a movie that was as real as it was stylish and even put Colin Farrell in jeopardy by bringing him along (with real FBI drug squads) to drug busts so Farrell could build up the character of Crockett even more." Ther is much more if you look up Miami Vice on Wikipedia.
-
all his movies these days boil down to is just a bunch of really pissed off people looking at each other seriously for very long shots while some Chris Cornell shit is playing in the background. Fanboys. I hope this movie doesn't have a 30 minute long staredown between Bale and Depp.
-
Get off your lazy asses, go to film school, and make movies just the way you want. Quit bitching.
-
Blast_Hardcheese, that song is "Black Heart" by Tucson indie band Calexico off their FEAST OF WIRE album. Amazing band. If you like moody desert-inspired music, they're the band. Mann used one of their songs on COLLATERAL as well. Hope that helps.
-
I LOVE his films, however Mann's digital looks like refined 1970s sitcom video. You don't have to be a film major to notice it's Michael Mann Digital. I understand the reasoning behind using it in Miami Vice. But not Colateral and definately not Public Enemies. The feel just isn't right. I'm VERY interested in Mann's justification for using Digital on this film. Maybe then my mind can be changed. If anybody on this site (Harry, Mori, Merrick, Quint or whoever) interviews him, please ask him why he used Digital on this movie.
-
Ah, so it's the shutter speed is the key.. I see, yeah, i guess that makes sense, since both Benjamin button and Zodiac we're shot with digital and they looked much better than this..visually...And btw, Since when it's illegal not to like something? I don't like the look. Period. Why do people take it so personally?
-
you know the one -- tethered to record/playback slung over 2 camera assistants backs
-
man does that site blow
-
What the hell was his last movie? SWAT?
-
Damn You Michael Bay
-
get over it
-
"John Dillinger was killed behind that theater in a hail of FBI gunfire. And do you know who tipped them off? His fucking girlfriend! All he wanted to do was go to the movies."
-
..this is Michael Mann, he made; Last of the Mohicans, Heat, and Collateral. He can use any camera he wants and it would still be a better film than all you annoying simple minded people could pull off. Digital is the next step in Movies and we all need to stop being like our Grand Parents complaining about rock music, cause it's just noise. I still watch Collateral and it's one of my Favorite looking movies ever. Not all films need to look like LOTR.
-
And where exactly does 'stunning' fall on a scale between 'removing my will to live' and 'fucking my eyeballs'?
-
Were there Silver and a Bronze ages too? Movie looks beautiful though
-
you m ongoloic shit faggot!!!!!!!!!!
-
High Fidelity, of course ;) Cusack was wrong though - it wasn't his girlfriend Pamela but a mutual friend of both of them, Anna Sage, who ratted him out.
-
Where the hell's Chuck D or Flavor Flav?!<p> LAME!
-
Depp is a great actor, but I've never seen him convince as the working class, alpha male everyman that Dillinger was. Warren Oates had that kind of toughness, Depp is just way too "met-ro-sex-u-al". It's all about what Mann can achieve I guess, I certainly have more confidence in him. But I don't think I'll be able to buy Depp as Dillinger for a second, it just looks like another wild and wacky Depp turn.
-
The characters are reversed. The vocal, extrovert cop is now the vocal, extravert criminal --- and the laconic, bottled-up criminal, now Bale's cop. Can't wait!
-
How is this man not a bigger star.
-
when he hits, its goodness
-
Please visit this website and click Play Video. I'm in a contest and all I need are views. Please help, AICN! http://tinyurl.com/dgub9z
-
I especially like the beginning of the trailer. Good thing Mann's applying his visual skills to a 1930s piece. Oh, and FUCK MSN video.
-
...It would not look better on film. The 20s-30s did not look like film. They "looked" like today, out of your eyes, and you just have an overindulgent sense of nostalgia if you're complaining about the medium.
-
the sound and resolution are so much crap, why even let people know about that bastardization of a great trailer?
-
This movie will be a huge hit on top of Oscar nominations for best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, score, costume, maybe a few more. On July 1st, this movie will own your ass.
-
Saw an early screening a few months back. It ran a little long, and there wasn’t enough BALE vs DEPP dynamic. I’m a huge Michael Mann fan, so I’m deffinately going to see this on its regular release. There was enough to place it amongst his best, so here’s hoping they tightened it up.
-
I'm a little gun-shy with Crudup since WATCHMEN...
-
I work at the fucking Walmart photo booth and trust me when I whip out my expertise and say the look of this movie is shit.
-
made me not hate the digital look as much
