A lot of great films are coming this May, but it just may be that THE BROTHERS BLOOM could be the best! Trailer Here!

Published at:  Apr 09, 2009 12:56:15 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... This May - I know, for sure, there are 3 great films being released. STAR TREK, DRAG ME TO HELL and THE BROTHERS BLOOM. I also have a sneaking suspicion that you'd be safe in adding UP to that queue of titles you'll be seeing that month, but I'm here to talk a bit more about THE BROTHERS BLOOM.

We played THE BROTHERS BLOOM at Fantastic Fest last year, shortly after it had premiered to questionable buzz at Toronto. It brought the house down at the Drafthouse. Everyone I know that saw it, loved it - and at the end of the year, I had it in my Top Ten... and Yoko had it as her very favorite film of 2008. The following trailer gives you a taste of the film that will follow, but I'm not entirely sure if it even touches on just how great the film that follows is.

THE BROTHERS BLOOM is a GAMBIT or TOPKAPI style of film. One of those delightfully complicated caper flicks that is exquisitely designed to make you smile... wider and wider throughout the running time and possibly produce a tear or two, but making you question the reality of everything. The film is about LOVE - not just that of a man and a woman, but LOVE that is found in familial, fraternal and in questionable activities. I have been dying to see this film again ever since it has screened and one thing this trailer signals is that... I won't have to wait much longer...

Why are you capitalizing love? Why are you doing that? Don't do that anymore. It's creepy.
Also, were you really "delighted"? I don't think men should find anything "delightfully" anything. Leave "delightfully" for the women.

    This Movie Is Awful

    by ranpeltzer

I saw it at the LA film fest back in September. I couldn't stand it. It's just Ryan Johnson taking elements from every other quirky movie made over the last ten years and combining them to make the most annoying thing ever.

    by industrykiller!

This is one of those adorable, Natalie Portman in Garden State "fall head over heels in love with the beautiful quirky girl" kind of roles for Weisz. I know that might sound overly precious but she's fantastic in Brothers Bloom, totally irresistible. It's a good film. I saw it a while back, now I'm thinking of writing up a review as it gets closer to release.

    BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!

    by ass lesson

Saw this at Rian Johnson's FESTIVAL OF FAKERY at the New Beverly back in February and was beyond impressed.

It's a 180 degree shift from BRICK, brilliantly directed and surprisingly funny. Weisz is a comedic revelation in this film.

Johnson's the real deal, people. Between BRICK and THE BROTHERS BLOOM, I see a long, successful career for this guy...so long as he never makes a movie for FOX.

    Ass Lesson and Isleelee

    by industrykiller!

Ass Lesson, I don't think it can be film of the year just on account of its flawed ending, it's far too abrupt, as if Johnson only got so far into the story and went "ehh this is enough"
Isleelee, this film is nothing like Garden State. Garden State purported to take place in our world but was clearly a too good to be true fantasy. Brothers Bloom sort of makes its own heightened reality and establishes those rules very early on, like an great genre film. Plus Weisz performance brings a character who obviously couldnt exist in our world down to a beautifully relatable level. Seriously go see it.

Sure to be best movie of the year.

    by ash talon

Also saw it at the New Beverly in LA a few months ago.

A wonderful movie that has fantastic energy, humor, and heart. Yes folks, this is one of the rare movies made today where you actually care about the characters. It's tone is very similar to early Wes Anderson before he just lost focus.

All the perfomances are outstanding. However, Rachel Weisz steals the show. She's the pixie girl that can save our hero with love. But she takes it to another level. She does things with just a look that are amazing. I predict an Oscar nom for her.

Industrykiller, I don't think the ending is rushed at all. In fact, there are seeds planted in it from the beginning. Pay attention to things said, and you'll see it's right there from the beginning.

Rian was there at my screening. He asked everyone to pay again for the film when it opens in May. He said that we could then theater-hop with is permission and see Terminator Salvation instead. He showed a pic of McG, arm-in-arm with Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale, on his Powerpoint presentation, and said McG doesn't need the money since he's "doing fine." A very charming and humble guy. He perfectly set the mood for the film. I'll be seeing whatever he makes next. One of the few directors out there that I have faith in.

Hey dude, y'know, I read your response and thought it over and you are right. I was way out of line. My apologies.
No doubt you received a fair amount of bullying and little female companionship in your youth. Undoubtedly these formative experiences stunted your emotional development and the thought that I resurrected some unpleasant memories makes me feel like a complete ass. So, again, mea culpa; if bonding, however remotely, with actresses via message board call outs helps you down the path to recovery, who am I to judge.

    Good luck.

    by ribbons

...I have a feeling I'm in the minority on this one, but to me the roles written for women that are supposed to be "cute and quirky" just come off as annoying. And as much as I like 'Brick' and want to like this as well, I'm getting a Natalie Portman-in-Garden State vibe off of Rachel Weisz's character, which is discouraging. But if that's your thing, this trailer probably made your May.

    Excellent film

    by travid

I saw this with my wife at the Hamptons Film Festival, and it was a really enjoyable, fun caper film. Whimsical and dark - at the risk of sounding like a published critic - I enjoyed the characters, the plot, the climax...it all worked well because the actors were all great, and it was edited very well. Not the summer blockbuster film by any stretch of the imagination, nor is it a Farrelly Brothers sleeper comedy. It's a good way to spend a couple of hours...with all the garbage in theaters, that says a lot.

    by prague23

Because if I saw a film with the Statue of Liberty in it and the trailer suggested the film was set in London, that'd be unforgivable. I really hope that the trailer is just cut in a way that doesn't mention that they're in Prague with an internationally recognized landmark, St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, and then suggesting it's in Russia. Because if they did that, it is truly sad and I'm going to hate this film which otherwise looks quite entertaining.
