Merrick here...

Clips from Abrams' STAR TREK is now appearing on the Net. Two appeared yesterday I believe. One is fresh.

From Omelete - Spock and Kirk face off on the Enterprise bridge; Scotty tries to stay out of it...

A rather swaggering/probably drunk Jim Kirk -vs- Uhura and a posse from Starfleet... (via MTV)...

A third clilp, featuring Kirk meeting a belligerent Leonard McCoy on a departing Starfleet shuttle, can be found HERE.

These clips don't do much to abate my fears. I know all the reviews pouring in are glowing but, this just looks wrong to me. What's with all the light flares on the bridge of the enterprise?? It all just looks overly slick and pretty just for the sake of doing that. I'm still going to check it out, there's no way I'm not, but I'm reserving final judgement till I see the whole thing.

    by the founder

JJ is a solid film maker, I knew when i heard he was on board that trek would be in good hands and that he would update it and breath some much needed life into the franchise. Anyone complaining and keep harking back to the past probably was never going to accept it anyway. So to hell with them. it looks good to me from what ive seen so far.

They could have easily brought back Shatner- here's how:

    by yackbacker

SPOILERS- So, if destroying the Kelvin set an alternate timeline in place, they could have done a coda scene where Shatner's Kirk is having a bourbon with alternate Nimoy Spock in a future 45 years after STAR TREK. You could show that this time Kirk doesn't die a miserable death on Veridian III, but instead is chillin with his best pal in the whole wide world, still captaining the Enterprise and all that jazz. It could have been a very simple tag-on scene. Sure, Shatner would have demanded more, but fucking-a, you agreed to do GENERATIONS and this is the best we can offer ya, Bill.

He's just an "David Hasselhoff"-quality actor who played the character and had the good fortune to milk it for 35 years. Kirk, like Batman, will live on long after Shatner's toupee is hanging in some nerd's collection and deserves better representation than an B-list quality actor trying to relive his glory years and further stroke his fragile ego.Shatner and you both need to move on. You're overstating your case. You can just simply say "Kirk is a character that will endure multiple actors now that Pine has taken the first step." But saying that Shat ain't Kirk is kind of silly. The guy made that character in his own image. See, B-list quality actors, as you call them, can't act that well, so he basically played himself. by randysavage

using the word "menu" in The Two Towers. Completely stupid and lazy writing. It is a term from another time period (in the case of Menu 1750s) and post-dates (or Star Trek's case, pre-dates) the film's era, and it never ceases to rip me out of the story. I cringe every time someone yells "fire!" when telling people to loose arrows from bows. What the hell does fire have to do with it? LOTR was also very guilty of this.

I watched Generations last night and technically Kirk is still in the Nexus and could be brought back at anytime. They should make it so he has to return to the Nexus after a time, because out of it he ages rapidly or something (Faustian law). Sure, in real life Shater has aged a little bit(apparently no one ages in the Nexus), but not enough that it would be noticeable. I'd like to see Shatner hit the gym and loose a few pounds so he looks trim. Besides, Shatner's gotten better with age and brings so much heart to any role and has teriffic presence. Just as Nimoy brings gravitas to this new film. It's not gonna be easy to get Prime Kirk back from the Nexus without it being silly, but the new writers should be able to do something cool with it. That's their job!

Urban will be the Eckhart of this movie

    by kenjinattix

Dark Knight was amazing mainly cuz of Ledger. Ledger shined so bright he over shadowed less but still great and unsung performances. No one more than Aaron Eckhart's Dent. If you watch that pic over you see that Dent is the star. Bats and Joker revolve around him. Eckhart to me nearly steals the picture.

Now with Trek, people are gonna be focusing on Pine/Kirk and Quinto/Spock and probably miss how perfect and great Urban/McCoy is. That intro scene showed me that McCoy is gonna chew up ever scene in this movie and spit it out...much like DeForest Kelly did.

    Bizarro...

    by flibbertygibbet

I think I remember him saying his wife is Scottish, so his accent should be spot on. He actually says just enough in this clip for me to be a bit worried. Thing is Bizarro, I sure as shit don't want to see a (sort of) national treasure anglicised. More importantly, I certainly don't want to see Scotty portrayed as the comedic runt of the litter, as he seems in this clip. Pretty much exactly Pegg's role in MI:3.

    Karl Urban IS Leonard McCoy!!!

    by expert_40

Seriously, out of all of the new actors, he's the one that nails his character the best.Look at the way his eyes "bug" out like De Kelly's always did when expressing emotion. Urban really gets it. He IS McCoy.I agree that while Pine looks very good as Kirk and Quinto looks great as Spock, Urban is the one to really nail his character down.Also... couldn't Quinto have TRIED to lower his voice maybe half an octave? Nimoy speaks in a low baritone or bass, very deep, rich voice. Quinto speaks in a high tenor, a little higher, brassier sound to his voice. It just doesn't match up. He really should have tried to lower his speaking voice down a bit to give him that Spock gravitas, which I see in his look, but I'm not hearing in his voice.

    Useless Lens Flares

    by chesterfield slacks

Welcome to the future where matte boxes on cameras don't work. In the late 90's world of visual effects, lens flares were deliberately put on to hide bad CG or composites. Were they put there throughout to be consistent with the CG shots which use a festival of lens flares to "make it real"? Very, very distracting, annoying, and old school cheese.

    Latest reviews...

    by bones

It seems that more and more reviews are hitting the 'net...and oddly enough, the ones from Sydney, while still pretty good are no where near the euphoria of the Austin reviews.
Also, it seems that the hardcore Trekkies, who have given themselves a few days to digest the story and everything else from the film are falling less and less in love with it the more they think about it.
Why is it that reviews that come out immeadiately after a screening with the cast and crew are almost always more positive than the ones that people take a few days to think about? What is that called?
I have a feeling that the film, while being very entertaining, is essentially a teen-version of Star Trek. Which is great, if that is all you want. I was on the fence before, then I got caught up in all the excitement...now I am back on the fence.
Star Trek is exhausting me...and I haven't even seen the film yet!

Here's the lesson: "the term 'fire' when related to archery is anachronistic (look that big word up). The term comes from the command 'give fire' which derives from early forms of handgun using a slow match. Bows are always shot, never fired."

Don't believe me, do some research.

Now I'd further insult your intelligence, but you've done enough already:

it's called wishful thinking...I'm still hoping this film is actually great, it remains to be seen if it's actually Star Trek or not (my gut feeling is, it's not, but its cool enough to distract everyone from that fact).. Paramount have been very crafty about using shills like Harry and selected films reviewers who are well known for returning positive reviews for exclusives...

These clips are most bizzare, one second you think 'that aint kirke' and the next 'it might be' and i'm guessing thats how the hole thing feels, but you're too entertained by the action, fx and lens flares to get too critical of it.

I hope i'm wrong and it's just plain fantastic.

And to all you whiny Trekkie bitches who are crying into your Spock \themed sippy cups about how this isn't "real Trek" and not "true to Roddenberry vison", here's a dose of reality: Roddenberry's vision, if the first movie and the first couple seasons of the Next Generation were any indication, was about as exciting as a civics lecture from that burnt out hippie who always hangs out at the local free trade coffee shop. If Abrams has to add some splosions and sexy dames to blow the cobwebs off this hoary old franchise, so be it.

Actually, Chekov is the only non-canon looking event that isn't. He was ON the Enterprise, but not on the bridge, as evidenced by Khan's recognition of him in TWOK..."Space Seed" was in season 1 of TOS, before Koenig joined the cast.

I heard that, but that's just fannon stuff

    by lockesbrokenleg

There was a cut scene of Khan looking over Enterprise crewmember files, and he comes upon Chekov's name. It was in Shatner's book.

Ha! But if it's a cut scene it's NON-CANON! So THERE!

    love the McCoy dialogue

My kind of crotchety old bastard.

And to all the continuity Nazis out there - sit down, shut up, and enjoy the frakking ride.

    no hubris

    by the podosphere

I think the infantilism of the "I'm not telling" remark was the whole point. FauxShat's clearly trying to egg some emotion out of NeoSpock. My guess is that Spock's rage against the Kirk beat comes not long after this.

Maybe one of the anointed few who've seen the whole film can tell me if my educated guess is correct.

That's pure Essence Of McCoy reduced to two words. That good scripterizing.

Pine is pretty good, Urban rocks

    by jackofhearts29

I am actually surprised, Pine does a pretty good job of doing Shatner's style and mannerisms as a younger Kirk would. And yeah, Karl tears it up... total agreement, the part of Bones is a nice piece to chew on (ha!) and Urban seems to be jumping on it with gusto. I also think Quinto's Spock is too high voiced, maybe the weakest part, but.. I can overlook it. Looking forward to this.

Champvinyl: I Do Have One Problem With The Film

    by media messiah

The over use of lens flares? Did it have to be in every scene? And Paramount produced this film, and the latest Friday The 13th film, with again, the over use of lens flare is everywhere? It is as if some exec at Paramount saw lens flare for the first time and said, put it in every damn movie we are producing this year?

Kirk is sex in skintight gold polyester

    by outintovelvet

No matter if played by William Shatner or Chris Pine. Hot, sexy beast. You know Jim Kirk would not leave a girls bed without making sure her galaxy was thoroughly rocked. Can't wait for May 8.

Since you put it that way, I'll have to agree that the line could work. Baiting a cunning rival can be a very effective strategy.I have used the technique on occasion even in talkback. :)

    Bones...

    by tommyhawk

"Also, it seems that the hardcore Trekkies, who have given themselves a few days to digest the story and everything else from the film are falling less and less in love with it the more they think about it."Luckily since this isn't true, we don't have to worry about this. The reviews are still the same, no matter how desperate you are to want this be true.

...in Blade Runner and Close Encounters, but it seems that every scene in this new Trek film is richly overstuffed with lens flares, even the dialogue scenes without special effects!

    Scotty hate

    by dannyocean01

Is so depressingly sad considering you've heard fuck all from Pegg. Lens flare reminds me of 80s movies so, yay modernity. Made me laugh reading a review of this that suggested Urban will never win any acting awards, but he's really good in this....yeah...ok.

Spock and McCoy are dead-on. My fears for this movie are diminishing by the clip.
