I am – Hercules!!

Leonard Nimoy, who next month stars in a movie from “Fringe” creators J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, will assume the very important “Fringe” role of William Bell in the series' first-season finale.

Bell was Walter Bishop’s old lab partner before bad and scary things began to happen to the world. Shortly after Bishop was incarcerated, Bell founded the sci-fi multinational Massive Dynamic.

I mean, don't get me wrong. Nimoy's cool. It's just when I read the headline, I first thought of Peter Weller, or Lance Henriksen. Or William Hurt. Maybe it's just because I associate them with very "Fringe"-like experiment-driven science fiction. Mister Spock? Not so much. But hey-- what's cool is cool. I won't debate this one.

The 78 year old Leonard Simon Nimoy as a villain is...

    by leafar the lost

...a great brillant idea. First, all of the geeks that have not been watching "Fringe" will tune in for the season finale. Second, it ties in to Abram's new Star Trek movie. The number one difference between Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner is that Nimoy actually knows how to act. He is also a very good director, btw. This is so fucking cool. HOWEVER, I do have one concern, and it is Nimoy's age. He was born on March 26, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts, which makes him 78 years old. The clock is ticking. Maybe Abrams can film all of Nimoy's scenes ahead of time, and I mean 4 season's worth with 1-2 years. Then, if Nimoy should pass away, they would have his scenes in the can. The thing is, I couldn't say for certain that he will make it for the possible full run of the series. JJ Abrams knows what he is doing. In the short run, this is a kick ass move. Do you hear this, Joss Whedon?

He was a great villain in that film. Probably my favorite role of his to date (I enjoy Star Trek but not enough to be classified a trekker). This is definitely a great casting choice. With them building up the character it's a good call to bring in a recognizable face with a big persona.

    by darkhawkprime

Robin Williams and Billy Crystal showed up in a May 1997 episode to promote Father's Day. Same thing is happening here. Get Spock to appear to get the new Star Trek fans to tune in. Now I love Nimoy and wish he was on the project since day one, but this seems forced. This just makes me pissed that in Star Trek: Nemesis they didn't go with the original plan to have the crew face a clone of Spock. Oh well I'll still be tuning in.

    by smackfu

Have you not learned from decades of TV watching that when you watch a show from the perspective of a character who has no idea what's really going on, that the big apparently evil corporation that seems to have it's hand in everything actually turns out to be the good guy by season 3 or 4.

Oh dear. Could it be that... I'm actually starting to enjoy a JJ Abrams production?

It's not great, but Fringe seems to have filled the gap left by Stargate, ie. inoffensive background noise you can watch. And like Stargate, Fringe gets better after the first few episodes. Hopefully it doesn't follow the Stargate trend completely and have crap final seasons.

Another point of view: this is called pandering...

    by cant_stop_yawning

C'mon people - I'm sorry; I know you're all enjoying your collective geekasm over this news, but this is such a blatant ploy.
First, it is a cheap and desperate way to reach out to the demo fox knows is slipping away from them on fringe (representative sample being the folks who frequent this watering hole for unrepentant nerds).
Nimoy got sadly typecast in the worst way w/ Spock and I feel for him. If you see him in the old version of body snatchers, and his pre-trek work, you see what a smart and low key (something sorely lacking these days) actor he truly was/is. That having been said, I'm not a trek person - can't stand it actually - and I can't divest the man from the role (maybe because he didn't do more work in the intervening years?). I don't want to harken back to all those dull afternoons i spent as a kid watching those tiresome reruns at friends houses when i would have been watching or doing anything else, or the cheese movies (yeah, including your blessed khan) that followed. Great stuff if you're Harry, but i think there is a huge contingent who will turn in for the novelty of the first appearance and then remember why they never became trekies - because trek is lame.
So, on a positive note, y'know who I would have preferred? Someone like Brian Cox - the guy is tough, cool and has proven gravitas (also, he is a whore and will take any job for money, apparently).

Can anyone else suggest an alternative they would have preferred just for the hell of it?

    by cant_stop_yawning

You're using double exclamation points in just about every post these days.
First, one is usually too many and two is never called for. Is there nothing that doesn't leave you giddy w/ anticipation?
When everything is thrilling, it's kind of like nothing is.

In the context of the weirdness of Fringe, I haven't seen any evidence that William Bell is a "villain" per se. The villain is whoever (or whatever) is behind The Pattern. That's not necessarily Bell.

It's the only way to explain why American Idol is still on. Fuck me in the ass.
