‘Are You Sure About That??’ Brian K. Vaughan Co-Wrote Tonight’s Linus-Centric LOST 5.12!!

Mrs. Littleton found out last week she was a really youthful grandmother.
Richard Alpert announced he doesn’t answer to Ellie or Charles. (Ellie was the hottie with the gun who took Daniel out to meet Jughead; Daniel remarked that she looked like someone he used to know.)
Jack refused to operate on Young Ben Linus. Jack tried to put a bullet in Locke’s brain three years earlier. I don’t always get Jack anymore.
It turns out Young Ben will be just fine, though the Others’ means of healing conveniently wipes away Ben’s childhood memories of Sayid. (And perhaps Ben’s childhood memories of Sawyer, Jin and Juliet? Does this mean Daniel or somebody is going to turn that frozen donkey wheel before Ben wakes up?)
Sawyer’s instructions to Kate were to look after Sawyer’s kid, Clementine. This was the big secret that destroyed Kate’s relationship with Jack? Given Sawyer’s helicopter sacrifice, did Kate think Jack wouldn’t understand? Did Sawyer whisper, “And whatever you do, don’t fucking tell Jack” before he made his dive?
ABC says of tonight’s episode, titled “Dead Is Dead”:

Herc, where's this info coming from that Ben's memory was wiped of all the survivors? Everything that's been going on in the show so far has been hinting towards the fact that Ben already knew about them. Look at the episode about Sayid, as Ben boards the plane he looks at Sayid with this look of "I know what's going to happen next".

LOST is still fun though, but it seems to have checked its brain in the overhead compartment. Also, why don't the SMOKE MONSTER make the same noises it used to? It used to sound like a robotic dinosaur, now it sounds like a hover-car. What's the deal?

will never get old. He's the only truly original character on the show who is always interesting in his scenes (as opposed to Kate's whining and Jack's glassy-eyed meaningful stare) and the only one with the balls to kill Locke-twice.
If he dies at the hands of Smokey I will be very, very disappointed. -

good point Herc...if Ben's memories are wiped then will he not be seeing Sawyer, Juliet etc anymore?...won't he be going back to Dharmaville?...do the Others keep him?...how would he not see any of the Oceanic people if he is returned to the Dharma village?...and have all of Ben;s memories been wiped or just the memory of him being shot?...if so why does Ben keep the doll that Annie gave him as a child since he obviously still remembers her...continuity error or something else?

What don't you get about him. Three years ago he tried to put a bullet in Locke's head becasue Locke was repeatedly direct impediment to Jack and the other survivors getting off the island. Now he won't operate on Ben because a.) Ben turns out to be a scumbag and b.) he has accepted whatever destiny the island has in store for him. What don't you get?

It wasn't so much the secret of taking care of Clementine that broke up their relationship, so much as the lies, trust issues, hauntings, and alcoholism. Maybe Kate should have told Jack about her giving a shit load of her cash to a former lover's illegitimate child. Maybe Jack should have minded his own business and trusted Kate instead of getting plowed and making accusations. It was doomed to fail becasue they are not meant to be together. she and Sawyer are. Sorry Jaters. Get over it.

Just because Ben is going to be "judged" by the monster doesn't necessarily mean he's going to die. Locke got "judged" but the monster passed him over.
My guess is the title "Dead is Dead" refers to Charlotte. -
He doesn't want to rush into anything like he used to, so he's going to go against his instincts for now. He's also embracing the theory that alot of it is all predetermined. He's actually acting like John Locke in season 1 by embracing the ISLAND. Remember when Locke was hard to understand?

The previews last week appeared to show Ben and Sayid's bounty hunter having a confrontation at the dock, so it looks like that's what he was doing, not going after Penny. Now before he left to go do that, he said he was keeping a promise to an old friend, or something to that effect. Maybe he was referring to Locke? Did he promise Locke he would help get everyone back to the island? Of course if that's the case, wouldn't bounty hunter girl recognize him on the plane? Guess we'll find out in a few hours.

I don't think it was Sawyers instructions per se that tears apart Jack & Kate. It's more that Jack feels Kate would (does) perfer Sawyer over Jack, and that she goes to lengths to fulfill his wishes (and that Kate clearly wants to hide the fact she is helping Sawyer from Jack) confirms it to Jack. Jack fancies (fancied) himself the hero for getting Kate off the Island and overtime it tears him apart that she doesn't see him this way or want him because of it. Jack & Kates breakup mirrors Jack & Sarah's (a rescue followed by Jack being the hero not being enough followed by jealousy followed by breakup).
Only now that he's back in Dharma times and talking like Locke is Jack breaking his Jack patterns. -

Jack is very predictable. When he doesn't feel in control, he turns into a whiny jerk. But he loves to be the hero. That's why he rose to the occasion when they first crashed. If you go back and watch old episodes, the characters are very consistent.

I found this over at DarkUFO. This guy sounds like he's thought about this a lot... and he's not a raging moron about it. It touches on a lot of stuff that everyone in here has talked about, but it's just a bit more concise than we've gotten in here.

My Craziest Theory of All Time The future does not exist without the past. Even though we live in the present, we actually spend more time thinking about the future, and thinking about the past. So how often are we really present? What is the present anyway? If you were to think about your own time line with you being a fly on the wall there, you would see complete versions of yourself and the people you interacted with. It would be the present to those there, and if you traveled to the future as a fly on the wall to watch yourself and those you interact with, it would be the present to that version of you and yours. To yourself, you would be seeing your future, and it would still be your present. One thing I have always wondered about since somewhere in season 2, was whose perspective is the show being told from? We often see character centric episodes, but it does not appear to follow one person over anyone else. Which made me realize how open the story telling can be. Most stories are told in the present time, or they may have a narrator reflecting back on a past time. What if the Narrator couldn’t speak? What we could be watching could be the past. We only assume, this is being told in the current time because it began on TV the same day as it is in the show. But we also know that 3 years went by in the watching of the story telling process but it was only 3 months on the show. What I am getting at is a bit out there, and feel free to think I am nuts (I already know I am and am quite comfortable with it) To explain what I mean about perspective I will use an example of a movie called Il Mare. Which is the original version of what you may have seen as a piece of crap called the Lake House (sorry if you liked it, I like pieces of crap too sometimes) the Lake House only sucked because of the paradox in it. The original, avoids the paradox if you think about it in a certain way. So for anyone who has no idea what I am talking about, Il Mare was about 2 people living 2 years apart, Korean versions of Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. So for the rest of this explanation I am will just refer to the Characters as Sandy and Keanu. Sandy is in what would be considered our time, the present, she would be Keanu’s future, he is in her past. The whole plot is unimportant; they fall in love via letters to each through the mailbox, from a house they both lived in but 2 years apart. (She moved in right after he moved out in her time) So say it was 2009 for her, it was 2007 for him when he is living there. At one point they are going to meet, this would be maybe the next day for her, he has to wait 2 years on top of that. He doesn’t show up, she is bummed, and then finds out he died earlier in the year around the time she first started corresponding with him. So Sandra warns him about this impending accident that will happen to him a year or so in his future, so he will not be killed. But for her, it already happened and he will never be with her in her life. Because it’s the past and you can’t change what happened (plus she doesn’t have a time machine, just a magic mailbox) but for him, since he is in the past (to her) he avoids the situation where he would die and since he knows when she is moving into the house, he knows he can meet her. So they get to be together in his time. The movie ends there; with him showing up at the house the day she moves in, she has no idea of course who he is. What does this story have to do with LOST, well, maybe nothing, but it can help explain what I mean about perspective. OF Keanu’s perspective. For to Sandy, whatever happened happened she could not be with him. Nothing changed, but for him he can have a whole story about it. If you wanted to follow that, follow what an altered past would be like. Because from his perspective this is the present. But for the Sandy’s side of the story it is the past and if can’t be changed. But if you saw the story from his point of view, you are just following his time line. Are you with me so far? So what if everything we have seen so far on the island was really the equivalent of this Keanu’s perspective of the story (present for him, but past to the girl) The majority of our characters would be Keanu and the island’s perspective is Sandy. Then I had another idea Ben = Rat = Eloise = learns the maze – then runs it What if Ben was able to send his consciousness to the future to learn how to “run the maze” of what we have seen. I am not guessing why, there could be many reasons. So for arguments sake the story actually begins in 2009 or 2010. We have never seen the present on the island. He in that time period lives through this, turns the wheel. And then returns to the island at a time before he turned it, before 815 crashed, could be long before also, and now he has the power to have everything go the way he wants, in an attempt to change something. But he can’t change anything in the future, because it already happened. But maybe he could change the past/ present and live there, because it would be the present for those in it. Now, he would of had to do something with himself, not sure on that, but we all know how twisted he is. Let you imagination run loose with that. This could be breaking the rules of TT. So when Hawking was talking about the unpredictable results, and we know some of them went to 77 and Sun, Frank, Ben and the others landed on Hydra Island in 2007, and it looks like an altered future. But maybe it’s not an altered future. Maybe they landed where Ben actually came from, and that is the way it always was, and what we were watching was an altered past. (watching Keanu in Lake House) So its possible the others never did take over the barracks, and Danielle never made the message. (IL_Deuce here: That would explain the different Dharma Barracks and the male voice when Frank tried to send his Mayday over the radio while landing) Perhaps in this future, a lot of things are the same, but not good for Ben. Perhaps in that future, Alex was alive, and this is why he was so surprised she was killed. OR she was dead there too, under different circumstances. And this is what he was trying to change. So he’s going back to the island a 3rd time, maybe he is going to be judged or maybe he is trying some more. The perspective of the story though is not Ben’s, I think it is likely he would mess around with time to suit his needs. Really makes you think about why he was so worried that John heard Jacob, and how he knows everything. The perspective would be that of the island, telling it’s story, and it would teach us no matter whether you believe in destiny or free will the only thing that matters in the present.Theory by theynameditright -

The problem I have with this is it flies in the face of whatever happened, happened. Jack and Locke have been arguing or disagreeing about shit since day one. Locke wants him to believe that fate brought them to the island and Jack refuses to budge. It gets more violent as Locke becomes proactive in preventing the Losties from leaving, culminating in Locke killing Naomi, and Jack nearly shooting him shortly thereafter. Now Jack has given himself over to Locke's beliefs and to the island. You think that Locke, if he really believed that "what happened, happened" would budge on helping Ben. No. He would say that had always happened and trust in the island. So I don't see what is so strange about both of those actions, even if I agree that Jack has effectively been a pud since leaving the first time.

Is that which Anubis used to judge the dead. Hieroglyphics often showed a scale where one's heart was placed on one side... but I guess the reality is that was metaphorical. The scale was Smokey, some sort of entity capable of reading the minds of those needing to be judge, capable of seeing all of this person's past, capable of *showing* that person his most serious transgressions (see Eko and now Ben). Then Smokey takes the form of someone special to that person, someone close to them from their life who is now deceased. And that person tests to see whether or not the person being judged is truly sorry for what they've done. Eko was not. Ben was. Ben was then shown Alex, and he broke down in front of her. So he was allowed to live- but not without a very very stern warning (I got a big "A Christmas Carol" vibe from that) that he should refrain from trying to kill John Locke. Which I think settles the debate: Ben DID kill Locke after learning vital information, but he did NOT kill him expecting the Island to revive him.

Previously a DHARMA Initiative house? WTF was it doing THERE? Possible explanations- it was already a small, ruined structure that the DI built on top of. They didn't know what Smokey was or how to summon it. OR maybe they DID summon it once with disastrous results- leading to the construction of the sonic fence. BUT, the DI built a secret door over the Ruined Door, then built a second secret door to hide the secret room. Interesting. Perhaps they were hoping to find a way to control Smokey but never could...

See the need to save Walt and Aaron in previous seasons. This season its been evidenced by Juliet, Sawyer, and Kate's desire to save Young Ben, which was in turn reflected in Ben's desire to save young Alex and to protect young Charlie from seeing his mother killed. Ben also had a friendly relationship with young Ethan (oho! Ethan was an Other as a child too!). Kids are important. Tonight's episode also showed why Ben cares so much about the pregnancy problem on the Island. He cares about kids. Ben is Holden Caulfield. He wants to be the Catcher in the Rye. Holy shit, that thought just caused my brain to explode.

Perhaps Ben DOES still have work to do on the Island. Widmore said the Island won't let you return... but the Island DID let Ben return. Afterall, it was Locke who was supposed to turn the wheel- not Ben. So the Island course-corrected. Ben still has work to do but he's pissing Jacob, the Island, and Smokey off all the same. So Smokey had to smack him around, smack some sense in to him. Tell him this is his last chance- "You fuck up and try to kill our Chosen One one more time, and its game over for you. We are done."

By my math, if it was 1988 when Ben kidnapped Alex, that means the DI was still active. They weren't purged until 1992. This also makes young Ethan, who was there during the kidnapping, 11 years old. Wouldn't surviving that attack be enough for Des? Perhaps he realizes Eloise was right...the island isn't finished with him, so he goes back to find out how he can put this shit behind him? WHY does Desmond go back?

The fact that Ben continues to confound expectations regarding his behavior is one of the best parts of this show. Admittedly, I LOVE Ben, have done since season 2. Manipulative genius smartass little guys who can take more punishment than guys twice their size greatly appeal to me. But Ben has always had heart, and the fact that he continues to do evil, then do good, or be repentent about his evil, is amazing. And he has heart about very specific, sort of selfish things. Sure, he was remorseful about Alex. Because he saw her as his daughter. Why should he give a shit about Ceasar?

GREAT episode. Didn't get the answers I expected (re: Judge Smokie), but got completely different ones instead (about Island history and Widmore), and THOSE only asked more questions! Gotta' love Lost, the show that makes you think if you want to or not.
Uhm...has anyone thought that Illana and the other 'New Losties' were acting suspiciously like Rouseau's crew we saw earlier this season? I don't think they're plants or working for Widmore OR Ben...they're just sick. :) And what lies in the shadow of the statue? Gotta say the Temple, but 'Death' is also an acceptable answer.
Cesar's not dead; Lapidus is still the only damn rational person on that island; Ben's still a liar (but not after this episode, I don't think); and that is Smokey/Zombie Locke, 'cause his real body's in the metal box.

I got the feeling that when Ben banished Widmore, he was actually sincere about thinking Widmore wasn't fit to lead because he broke their rules and not just because Ben's power hungry at that point.I always figured Ben came and went by sub. whenever he wanted, but apparently the leader can't leave and come back, even by normal means (the sub instead of the wheel). So can regular others come and go, but not the leader or what?

It was nice to let Ben get one more mindfuck over on the show before going straight. Alex, your ghost can appear anytime. I would think that Ceasar and Ben actually are together, with Ceasar leading Ben's group and that's pretty much why he shot him, to take attention off him. Notice there was no classic Lost funeral scene.

In Midtown there is a big honkin' statue of Anubis, I think to promote an eqypt exhibit at the museum...but I can't drive by there without thinking of Lost.

Ben was much nicer about kidnapping Alex than I thought he would be. In season 1 Rousseau made the others sound all supernatural and mysterious...when what she ACTUALLY saw was just some dude with a gun grab her kid and warn her not to follow. From what we already knew, I assumed that Alex was taken since the Others couldn't have children. Ben sparing Rousseau is an attempt at building a case for his survival when judged by Smokey, but it takes the wind out of what we knew/assumed from the kidnapping.

I noticed when he was shot, there was no wound or hole or any mark on his chest at all. at first i figured it was just a typical tv mistake but since we see him minutes later attacking ben, my guess is that the bullet went through his bag but missed him or at worst it was a little graze. so i figure he either faked the whole fall or it was just a reflex thing.

Cheif, as you know I've thought it was a "the gods" thing for awhile. And while last night seemed to be a confirmation of how ancient this thing is, I'm not so sure I'd concentrate on just the Egyptian aspect.
In all my "research" into this stuff, I've found references to Egyptian as well as Greek/Roman mythology, and also found references to Australian and native American folklore. There are a lot of paralells and some conflicts. For example, in the last post of mine above, Anibus (god of death) is said to also be Hermes, the messenger of the gods who protects the likes of......well...our LOSTies.
So maybe it general mythology and folklore that appears throughout history rather than 1 particular culture's.
Of course, I could be wrong and studying it all could take forever. -

And I'm glad there's a payoff... A lot of people just getting to know lost aren't thinking of the bigger picture. You guys need to watch season 1-4 over the summer hiatus.
Some are saying that Hieroglyph Ben looked at in the temple was a combination of Quetzalcoatl and Anubis; If you look at pictures on lostpedia of where the island is... Low and behold it happens to be not only between Egypt and South America but *ALSO* hovering around the equator and international date line. Coincidentally that point is roughly between the U.S. and Australia.
Take from it what you will.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they are the ones that end up shooting at the Losties in the canoe. Who the hell are they? They give off a really creepy vibe... It could be as simple as them being some of Widmore's people, or maybe they're something else entirely. The fact that they are mentioning the statue (and I'm assuming they mean the Island statue from the past, that's probably Anubis) makes me think they are something else entirely. Perhaps in the far past there were two warring factions on the island... Those who lived in the shadow of the statue, and those that were in the temple (if they are not the same location, that is). The temple people became what we know as the Others (the good guys, Michael) and the other faction were evil and banished from the island after the two factions were at war with each other. Perhaps now they are finally back to do whatever evil shit they set out to do in the beginning. Could these Shadow Assholes be ageless like Alpert?

Watching last nights episode, the picture of Jack, Hurley, and Kate in the DI was in Ben's house correct? He seemed very suprised when he looked at it... I know they have said numerous times this is not Back to the Future time travel, but how could he have lived there and never seen the picture? Did they just appear in the picture after they arrived on the island in 1977? I mean he was still in the house during the time after 815 crashed, and Jack was living at the compound for a time during season 3. How could he have not noticed?

Perhaps, now, he DOES want the Island to exploit it as some sort of revenge on everyone- Ben, Jacob, Richard- for kicking him off. Or perhaps he wants to get back to the Island because he feels its still *his*, just as it seems Ben still feels he should be the Others' leader. Or maybe he just wants the Island because he still wants to protect it and feels he knows best? In the end, though, its probably the same reason the Others went back to the Island- its the only place they ever felt at home.

So I was thinking about this the other day and wondered whether the island is Atlantis. What makes me thinks this aside from the obvious things like it's an island, it disappears, it had an ancient civilisation that appears to have advanced technology of sorts, is the whole bit in the church with the pendulum a few episodes ago. This seems to be referencing a myth/conspiracy theory whereby the pendulum is supposed to be foucaults pendulum (a real life device that was built to prove the earth rotates), which is marking on the map the 'sweet spot' where all the worlds natural energies (called telluric energy)converge. The myth goes that at the convergence you will have limitless power and the place where it all converges is supposed to be atlantis.
Theres quite a famous a novel called 'Foucaults Pendulum' by Umberto Eco (hmmm.. I wonder if Mr Eco was a nod to him) that draws on these myths and links them to the Knights Templar and kaballah and ancient african religions- which I get the feeling they may have read an be using bits of.
Obviously this doesn't explain all the mysteries but I think it would explain a lot of the mysteries -

Many think that Cesar is not dead, and is with the group of "316 Others" led by Ilana. If so, why would he think he was so cool when he found the gun under Ben's desk? If he was really the big man, why not just open the cache of guns that everyone else had access to? I think it was a case of the writers not quite knowing what to do with a new character and deciding later in the game to cut there losses (and payroll) before we headed into Nikki and Paulo land.

Actually that was part of the Ben Widmore throwdown when Ben visitied Widmore in his apartment. Ben was going to kill Penny and Widmore was going to find & return to the island. I believe that Sun when Sun aproached Widmore she told him that she knew that he was trying to return to the island.
Also if Widmore was banished for leaving the island at will then so would Ben have been. Miles had a picture to prove it. -
Darlton has stated that the triangle will not get resolved until the series finale, so thats three characters that will not die until the series ends.

Minor continuity glitch: he was banished in 92 at the earliest, so he has been looking for the island for max 15 years, not close to 20 as he claims. *Both Ethan and Ben joined the others before the purge. I'm betting we'll see his mom show her true colours pretty soon. Wonder how Li'l Ben's return to the DI will play out. He may have forgotten what happened, but his father and Lafleur etc knows it was him. *Des is the coolest man alive. And how brilliant was that underwater shot of Ben falling in the water? *The casting dept has done a great job in getting actors to play the younger characters. Ben, Charles '54 and '77, and Rosseau. Dead ringers! *Man, I love this show. And next ep is about Miles. And features Pierre Candlewickwax! And has ESB-references probably! Yay!

It didn't even occur to me just HOW big a change this was until just now. Last night it just swept past me. But previously, we've all believed Ben and the Others stole Alex for malicious means. They wanted their own children, etc. We had all thought, in Season 3 and 4, that Ben was a freaking evil, greedy, asshole that wanted his own kid, so he stole Alex from Rousseau. It just hit me that the whole thing was an unplanned accident, something he was unprepared for- like a young mother or father finding out they're pregnant when they weren't trying. Ben was sent to kill Rousseau, not knowing Alex even existed. Widmore sure knew, and he expected Ben to kill the baby too. But instead, Ben spared the both of them and took Alex to protect her- from both crazy French Lady and any possible other Other missions to kill them. It totally reverses the entire S3 dynamic where you looked at Ben and Alex's dysfunctional relationship as a result of Ben's kidnapping of her. But instead, what he really did, was *save* her. For Widmore surely would have sent someone else to kill the mother-daughter. Ben as the savior instead of the kidnapper. It just got to me.

Doesn't make Ben a saint, but he essentially saved Alex and Danielle's lives. And to be even more awesome, he managed to openly defy Widmore at the same time. In fact - have we ever seen Ben do ANYTHING obviously evil, without a motive? He's still an asshole, but there's always a reason for doing things. Widmore seems to be far more 'I want them dead' without a motive.

We've been thinking of Smokie as a seperate entity, a creature or 'monster' if you will with a 'mind' of its own. I'm starting to think that's not true.
The best phrase I can come up with for it is a 'Soul Mirror'. It's not that the island itself is judging you; it's that YOU are judging you. We saw when Smokie first met Eko, and now from Ben's meeting last night, that it flashes images from that specific person's memory. Why was Eko judged guilty and killed? He said it himself; "I am a bad man" (and I'm paraphrasing, but...); he accepted his guilt for the things he had done in his life, and felt he was guilty of terrible deeds. Why was Ben judged not guilty and left alive? He accepted the terrible thing he had done (as HE saw it) to Alex, but was truly repentent and wished he could take it back. Eko never made that presumption. This would also explain why all the other horrible shit Ben has done in his life weren't called into question by Judge Smokie; because Ben himself didn't see them as 'bad', he saw them as either neccessary for the safety of the island or he IS just a twisted little sociopath in certain respects.
And that shot of Ben diving into the water, with the blood rushing out of his mouth was sick (as in, awesome). Say anything you want about this episode, but it was shot beautifully. -

Why is everyone ignoring the HUGE gap in Lost logic that happened last night? When Russeau caught Ben in Season 2 she "thought" he was an Other. She never said she'd seen him before, she did not provide this definitive proof when the argument of who he is came up. I can only guess that Ben made a deal with her to not let on who he was in exchange for keeping Alex safe? That's sorta bullshit though. And how come no one else has mentioned this? Maybe I'm missing something and the character continuity isn't all whacked up...please...better Lost minds attack this conundrum...

Was pretty close in resemblance...but...the next time we saw him was circa 1984-85 when ben brought Alex back to camp...he sure seemed to age rather rapidly in just 7 years time...I think they should have just 'aged UP' the actor that played him in '77....not 'aged DOWN' the guy who plays him in the present.
Anyways...anyone else think Widmore should have ridden into that '77 camp on a BLACK horse? As in Kate's BLACK horse? Think they missed an opportunity to make a nod at some old show mythology there. -

I don't like that Adult Ben Linus has no memory of the Losties from the past, but otherwise it was a f-ing good episode.
On the other hand, maybe when a person turns the frozen donkey wheel they get disentangled from the timeline, kinda like the Enterprise-E in Star Trek: First Contact.
In other words, because Adult Ben left the island before the Losties started jumping around in time, he's actually living in a different timeline than Young Ben, which is why he doesn't have any of Young Ben's memories.
Make sense?
If this is where the writers are going, then Adult Charles Widmore's memories of past events should be different than Adult Ben's memories. After all, Widmore left the island before the Losties started jumping around in time.

The "crazy French lady" answers are probably sufficient, but in addition I think this is a case of viewers being too objective about things. It's like when people get pissed that the Losties don't ask enough questions. It's very easy to say "well, if I was in their shoes, I'd be asking all sorts of questions". In this case, it's easy to say, "Rousseau should've told them who Ben was". But discounting the "she was crazy" argument for a moment, consider that this is the man who kidnapped her child, held her at gunpoint, and warned her to run away from any whispers she heard. Does she really want to out him straight away to a bunch of strangers she just met?

I think Alex is 16 or 17 when the Losties first come to the island. That would make her being captured in 1991, 1992, around purge time. So Widmore would be aged 15 years or so from 1977. I still don't think he would have had that drastic of an aging, but maybe all of his hopping on and off the island aged him.

Rousseau was extremely adamant that Gale was an Other. It had been 16 years since she'd seen him. Your memory would warp over time. Eventually she'd probably even forget exactly how Robert looked. But back to Gale, she said over and over he was an Other. Not that she assumed or thought- she *knew*.

“What lies in the shadow of the statue?” My first thought was the FDW. If you look at a shot of the statue when Juliet Sawyer and Miles saw it, they were standing directly in its shadow, and at the location of the Well/ FDW.
When Widmore was being banished, maybe Ben wasn’t listing his crimes. Leaving the island doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, since we know Ben did so (according to Miles’ photos). Maybe Ben was saying something more along the lines of; “Why do you care if you’re getting banished? You leave all the time anyways.” I was hoping there would be a more interesting reason for Widmore’s banishment.
Also, why do some people think Ben was being sincere when he saw the DI picture with Jack, Kate, Hurley and was surprised? If there’s one thing we do know, it’s that Ben LIES.

As for the Jin thing... she said to Ben 'you're the carrier.' She clearly had started to lose it, because JIN would be the obvious carrier. They meet him, he disappears, then reappears when she shoots everyone? Rousseau clearly had already gone loco between Jin splitting and Ben arriving.

Alex was kidnapped around 1988. She was 16 in 2004, not 2007, remember. But Widmore was banished after the purge, which was in 1992.

Eko was killed because he wouldn't change or repent. Ben was judged for allowing his daughter's death and he actually did feel it...it changed him. Not enough for the island's tastes, obviously, but I think you will see a new Ben from here. The season has been one of role reversal, and Locke seems more confident than ever before. When Ben started dogging him I thought it was gonna be the same old shit, but Locke smacked him down very effectively. It will be interesting to see if the new castaways are working for Ben or Widmore. I'm sure if they are Ben's then he might need to revise their marching orders.

She was never that functional. In S1, despite having been left alone for years she boobytraps her base. In S2, she begs Kate to shoot her. In S3, she discovers Alex is alive but doesn't see her. I'm not saying Rousseau isn't justifiably crazy, but she doesn't once play with a full deck. Except for telling Alex to run.

I said the same thing last week when the preview for this ep showed Ben talking to Rousseau. Either the writers are just content to let this continuity slip lie, or they have some sort of explanation why Rousseau is some sort of female Ronald Reagan. French chick's memory be fucked big time. The Jin thing was almost forgiveable (although I'd remember an asian dude who disappeared in front of my eyes on the very first day of my big island adventure, no matter how fucking much time passed) but this latest development is bullshit. You'd DEFINITELY remember the guy who slipped into your tent like a pedo in the night and stole your kid.

I'm sure between the between the Others, the bears, the monster, etc. that Danielle had plenty of batshit things happen to her. Plus the fact that when she catches him he in a net, not very visable. Then she shoots him and Sayid takes him to camp. I don't think it is a stretch to say she doesn't recognize him.

I think there are people that Smokie just has no regard for and kills if it can (to remove an unwanted interloper), but would also not chase very hard if the intruder ran for it. The half-dead pilot is easy prey but the mercs manage an escape.

they just got killed. There was no five minute scene with them facing down the past like there was with Eko and Ben. I thought about the pilot as well. The mercs are totally understandable as they were a threat to the island. We do know that Lapidus was supposed to be the original pilot, so maybe something there will shed some light on why he got mangled right out the gate. Are we sure that the smoke monster is the same one doing the indiscriminate killing? Wasn't there two big figures in the glyphs Ben saw down cellar?

As for Danielle...She told Sayid he would like...A LOT!...I didn't hear much lying going on in that tent last night...which tells me Danielle & Ben have crossed paths again later on the island...But she didn't reveal that she knew who ben was to Sayid because she feared for her daughter's life....what Ben might do to Alex if she exposed him as an Other.

Not to say that I have a grasp on the Egyptian part of the storyline but the glyph looks like the dog god mentioned above is in control of the smoke monster, kind of like a snake charmer. That would probably equate to Jacob. To me the monster just seems like a child in a way. It gets really angry at times, other times it tries to communicate, it can be very judgemental. Or maybe it is the collective ghost of all those who have died on the island and thus is unpredictable by nature. Something strange is going on with death on the island, and you remember how freaked Ethan's mom was when she had to give up her man's body.

Working in tandem with Smokie... We know Smokie takes other forms. At least, we always assumed he was the spider and Yemi, and you're right, I think the producers DID confirm that. I did think it strange that the Smoke retreated before Alex showed up. But perhaps that's the way Smokie rolls. Perhaps this connection between the Dead and Smokie is something we fans know of- the normal viewing public might not have made that connection yet, so the producers may be saving that moment for a later date. It would be pretty on the nose if they just went ahead and showed the Smoke taking the form of Alex. Its far more intriguing to just have dead people keep appearing before the characters. BUT, we've also seen Libby and Christian appear off Island (in the freighter, at Jack's hospital), and Charlie was at Hugo's mental hospital. Smokie? Or just Island manifestations? Yeah... I bet they are two separate things.

questioned Others before and knows they won't break easily, if at all. I'm sure she didn't whip up her little interogation room just for Sayid. She told Sayid he was "one of them". I'm not ruling out that they crossed paths in the 16 years but I don't think she knows he took Alex, nor does she have any reason to side with the Others or Ben in any kind of charade.

You don't notice cause he's a dog and such but now you have to think maybe it goes a little deeper and the statue would seem to back that up. I don't think it is a statue of Vincent obviously, but the Anubius god.

Well, some of them got FLAMING ARROWED and some of them got BLOWN THE FUCK UP by those land mines or whatever during the record skipping episodes. I'm sure Rose, Bernard, Vincent, and a few others are still around somewhere though... perhaps chillin with the Others in the 70's? Or maybe holed up on another part of the island? Who knows... hopefully we'll find out by the end of the year. And when we do, I'm sure many of them will serve as more cannon fodder!

That all these flashbacks we've been seeing (especially in the first few seasons) was what the island/smokie/Jacob/dead people/Vince the magic Anubis Dog was seeing while 'scanning' people. All the images from last night...were mostly from the flashback that episode. When smokie 'scanned' Eko, the images 'flashing' were from his flashbacks that episode.

Vincent went back in time, dragged some poor native kid who was drowning out of a deep part of the stream, becomes instantly revered by the Island natives to the point where they build a statue in his image... Or maybe the see Smokey and Vincent canoodling in the woods, playing around, wrestling. Thus they thought he had some special power or kinship with Smokey. Crazy!

I'm amazed, a good point/comparison between Lost and Stargate. :) -

Yeah, the sarcophagus in SG1 was a device that was used to heal people and bring them back to life. The bad guys used it to attain immortality, but at a price. After using the sarcophagus many many times, the user would begin to lose themselves and eventualy turn evil.

when you realize that something like the Ben/Alex thing completely changed like that, you're cool with it? 'Cause that's been the core of my complaint. Things you thought were building to a certain outcome have now been tossed aside. Watching Ben pushing Alex on the swing and having the nicest time was totally freakin' weird. It was like you're supposed to now think the whole problem with Ben and Alex was that he didn't like her boyfriend. It almost makes Danielle a villain for wanting her kid back. The way I see it, they're rewriting old episodes by changing things so much. 'Oh Ben was never really bad, see he's nice. He did all that horrible stuff for the children.' *cue "Greatest Love of All"*

Just rewatching that first scene of this season (w/Chang & Dan...and PS, I freeze-framed that shit and didn't see ANY name on Dan's jumpsuit), and I noticed something. The holes the DI are drilling into the surface of the rock, trying to reach the 'foreign matter' behind...they looked really damn similar to what Smokey poured out of in the Temple Wall last night. Chang says, "If you were to drill a centimeter further, you would release the energy." Like smoke pours out of the other 'penetration' point?
Someone mentioned that when Locke saw the 'monster', he said it was a glowing light. In Hoth, there is a glowing white light behind the FDW, and when it was turned blinding white light washed over the island.
Black. And white. Wasn't there something about that being a MAJOR theme of the show? Maybe we're not dealing with two BLACK Smoke Monsters.
What if Black Smoke is just this mindless mass (or 'soul mirror', if you put any belief in my earlier post), the representation of not only Death (ie: servant of Anubis) but the past (ie: flashbacks)
And what if White Smoke (Glow Worm Monster? Heh. No, that's just too funny) is the actual embodiment or primal force of the Island, or maybe is the physical representation of what we think of as 'Jacob' (Holy Spirit indeed!)? What if THAT is the opposite force of Black Smoke; it represents Life (in taking the form of those dead and giving them new 'life'; THAT'S why Black Smokie didn't just 'turn' into Alex...'cause they're two different beings) and the Future (the Dead People always seem to be guiding the Losties to where they need to go, what needs to happen, what's coming next). And that might be why Dead People can show up off the island; it has a much farther reach than the limited Black Smoke.

Don't think he's Christian's dad, but probably the original Shephard. We've already met Christian's dad, Ray, in '316', where Jack visits him in a convalescent home because Ray has a knack for running away to a "better" place. Me thinks Ray was on the island with Papa Shephard as well.

Its not a huge change, its just a difference of interpretation. Ben has ALWAYS maintained he's part of "the good guys", a statement which doesn't jibe with him stealing a baby from a woman on the Island. This episode didn't change the core of his character, it just illuminated some new aspects of it. So why would I be mad?

I don't think this could be Widmore's body, dead or alive. If the timeline for the O6 getting back is to be followed, this means Charles had a very quick journey. Ben goes to 'meet with' Penny the morning before 316 takes off, near dawn by the cresting sun. He calls Charles, who is in a time-zone that is already day (and overcast), exiting a 'Widmore Industries' building, and passing a newspaper stand that has British magazines displayed. Pretty sure he's in England, so he'd somehow have to travel across the Atlantic, either die or just get wrapped up in his box, and be ready for loading on 316 withing about 15 hours (and that's being generous). I still say it's Locke's body, 'cause it sure is a coffin-sized box.

that sort of character development has literally been present since the very first episodes of season 1. the writers have set up an expectation for us, and then turning it on its head, messing with our minds. IMO, that's probably the main thing that makes this show so smart. There is no objective truth. No one is just good or bad. Every one has a motivation or reason for their actions, and once we're treated to a different point of view, we see that actions that appeared to be evil were actually good, or altruistic actions were actually selfish. it adds nuance, unpredicatbility and complexity to a show that could easily have been just good guys vs bad guys. They did it with Sawyer, Jin and Sun, Locke, Mike and Walt, Charlie et al in season 1, why get mad because of it now?

Perhaps it's Jacob's body or a body for Jacob. Maybe there's a sect trying to get Jacob a body to inhabit to free him from the cabin and reclaim his rightful throne as king of the island.

Ben has been off the island before; when Miles and Freighties showed up he had a photo of Ben in some office building, he has a room full of foreign currency/passports/etc, and he was able to set up a 'desert stash' in Tunisia. I dunno if he had anything to do with Christian, though...
As far as we know, Christian drank himself to death in Australia, and was found in an alley(?I think? Anybody?). Interesting thought, though...
Oh! And the 'bloodline' theory...would that mean Locke really is Jack's brother? Or Christians? And Hurley saw the cabin, too...maybe he's their ethnic cousin. :) -

In the Da Vinci Code there was that secret society that guarded the secret of the fact that Christ had a son. They had their hand in a big part of the society and left hints in the art, literature, etc.
What if there was a group of individuals hundreds of years ago thats found the island and discovered its properties. They built their settlement and resided on the island. During this time they built the statue & the temple.
Later something caused some of them to leave the island. Some stayed and became the Others, Some left. But before they left they took a vow of secrecy to keep the location of the island safe. On the mainland they blended into the population while keeping an eye on select indiviuals as they would recieve intel from the island. This secret was passed down through the generations. Most recently Eloise Halwings after leaving the island.
What if llana was a member of this secret society and she followed Ben on orders of Eloise to make sure that Ben would no longer cause problems? What if besides having Sayid hunt down Widmores men, he was also hunting down members of that society? That the golf guy was a member and thats really why llana caught Sayid? -

meeting was to show when both guys really went off the rails. Christian pretty much convinced Sawyer to kill the dude he thought was the real Sawyer. Sawyer bought a broke alcoholic a bottle of liquor, possibly the one that killed him. This also sets the stage for Jack & Sawyer to develop their friendship later on.

Who sacrificed himself saving Desmond from dying in the Looking Glass stations too. Charlie AKA "Chawlie".Seems only right that Desmond should name his kid after the guy that saved his ass. As stated above by Lonnie, and MP!!!, Jesus' real name wasn't Jacob - it was Joshua. Or Y'sha, translated to Jesus. How do we know for sure the purge was '92? Has it just been theorized as such, or is it set in stone? Because I was surprised to see young Ethan there with Ben, obviously '88 or '89 stealing baby Alex, when the purge hadn't yet supposedly happened. Can anyone confirm the Purge date?

You can't go with Locke had a "regular resurrection" (I was dead but now I am completely fine) with Christian being reincarnated as Smokey the Monster (he can appear off island instantly and disappear). It's a mite too complicated. Ben was telling the truth to Sun, he has no idea why Locke is alive. So, therefore, if all resurrections are smokey (See Alex and Yemi) therefore Locke is Smokey.

I think you're letting your hatred for Ben cloud what was there the whole time... which is normal. Everybody loves to hate Ben, we can't all be specimens of manhood like Sawyer, etc... but the first reference Ben made to his daughter was right before he went under the knife at the beginning of season 3. He said "Did Alex ask about me?" and Juliet said "No." So he's always cared about her, despite his "badness" otherwise... I think the main issue with their relationship was when she started to grow up and realize the things that he was capable of.

About the purge being in 92, are we sure? Because Widdmore said he has been looking for the island for close to 20 years, when we now the max it could have been is 14 or so.

My point wasn't just about Ben and Alex. It's really about Ben and everything he's done and how it seems that NOW they're trying to explain away all the horrible shit he's done with some weakness for children. I don't care if he founded UNICEF, he still did enough horrible stuff that I'm not going to dismiss it. There isn't a good deed jar and a bad deed jar, and the one with more stuff in it determines who you are. If you suck at all, you suck. In almost everyone else's first flashback you got that 'they're not who they seem' thing. With him it's been different. He's been nothing but evil for seasons. Now it seems like they're going to try to tack his guilt on to Widmore. To me, it says they changed their mind about the character somewhere along the way and now want him to be "good" so they're spinning things that were already established.
I didn't mean to get into this, that's why I addresses D. Vader directly but since I don't seem to explain myself right the first time here's an example of what I mean. Star Wars. A New Hope. Old Ben tells Luke that his father was already a great pilot when he met him. 20 years later. When the prequels come out, and Obi Wan Kenobi meets Anakin, he's a kid and a podracer. So now winning a podrace supposedly qualifies as being a great pilot. But that's not what everyone thought he meant in 1977. And I'll hazard a guess that GL didn't mean that either. But as an old man, Darth Vader being a badass wasn't as interesting a story as how someone becomes evil. So GL had to fit some established ideas into his new story. I'm saying I think the writers of LOST did something similar. Wherever they're going as we head for season 7 is probably a revised idea of what they originally had for the show. (When we first met Danielle in season one was Ben even a thought?) So now some of the things we already were told have to be revised too. So for some it could come across as revelations. For others, like me, it could come across as revisionism. I just seem to be the only one in these talkbacks. -
I won't Cheif! I MUST nitpick! It's not a huge deal for me, just seems strange for Ben (and 'lil Ethan) to be running around with the "Hostiles," stealing babies from Frenchwomen while the DI is still in operation. They'd have to be pretty sneaky to be double agents, especially with all the security the DI had, but I'm sure it's possible.

A guy who doesn't age. Is that perhaps cuz a long, long time ago Richard was born on the island. He lived there until he turned...I dunno...let's say late 30's (Nestor is 41)...Then he left the island...or was FORCED to leave the island. Off island, he was killed. Somebody brought him BACK to the island for burial...except...he was resurrected. He also didn't age a second after that. (Hence, Linus's line "You remember birthdays...don't you, Richard?)...
So...a possibly ageless RESURRECTED dude informed Locke that ya gotta be DEAD to return to the island....who had performed the feat once before himself.
Then ya got Christian Shepard...He ALSO returned to the island deader than a doornail...but now walks around the place like he owns it. Talks to people...Even hands LIVE people inanimate objects...
Perhaps Ben & Alpert never told WIDMORE the secret to how you 'come back' to the island...ya gotta be DEAD.
Ok...wait a tic...Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid...the rest of the 0-6, Lapidus...and Ben weren't dead...and THEY got to come back! So how does THAT work?
Well...I dunno...I was thinkin it was because none of those folks were BORN on the island....and neither was Locke. So that doesn't work. Could "the island's not done with you" be their simple invitation back?
This is all, of course, academic if Widdy is NOT in the big silver box. It could just be more weapons for the coming 'war'. Although I'm not sure how Ajira screener would let a big box of weapons get through security.
But something tells me Locke shared a secret with Widmore, that Alpert & Ben had been holding from him to KEEP him from coming back to the island...as a dead guy. -
Obviously certain elements of the show have been retconned; like you said, Ben might not even have been a thought early on in season 1. But I don't mind so much because they've basically been writing backwards the whole time. In the first draft of the pilot, for example, Jack was supposed to die. None of the characters, or their roles in the grand scheme of things, were designed to turn out the way they have. But say what you will about Ben, he's always been fond of Alex. Or at least, I've always had that impression. I mean look at his house; her pictures are all over the place. He's also had a thing for babies, as Richard remarks that he's been "wasting our time with novelties like pregnant women" way back in season 3 as well. Whether this makes him "good" or "bad" overall is partially up to you, but I think it makes more sense to say that he's capable of being both, or neither, than saying he's not allowed to love his daughter because he sucks.

Unfounded! The whole dramatic fulcrum of his character hinges on the ambiguity of his intensions. No one is denying that many of his actions have been harmful. But, please, leave the judging to Senor Smokey! Were Ben's extraordinary behaviors(killing, kidnapping, manipulating) for his own personal gain or for a greater good? From this episode, we have learned that SOME of the things he has done were for good reasons! MANY other actions are still unexplained. He is STILL a bad guy if you want to hold onto a label, but the writers have added on a layer of complexity that I feel keeps him compelling.

that's not really a hard concept to dig is it? He was judged on that one thing, for whatever reason, and the monster gave him a pass. No one is trying to say he's not an evil fuckhead, and the island acknowledged that by promptly bitchslapping him in the guise of his dead daughter. Just like all the other episodes where I almost crossed the line and started liking Ben, this one showed he is pretty much the same as always. Now we'll see if the warning was enough or if he pushes his luck.

I agree, there's no retcon going on. Just more exposure of Ben's multi-faceted character. Shooting Des and almost Penny were selfish, "bad guy" actions. But stopping himself for lil Charlie, taking Alex from crazy Rousseau, and admitting his culpability in Alex's murder were "good guy" actions. And they were ALL consistent with what they've established about Ben in prior seasons.

maybe this is the box that the numbers open? When Hurley goes back to the asylum the first time to confront the Leonard guy about he got the numbers the dude goes nuts about how he opened the box. There's a box on the island that yields whatever you imagine. Locke works at a box company owned by Hurley. Now we have another mysterious box. Lot of box action for there to be no meaning or significance.

Much of what Ben has done has been in the professed interest of the island. And to be fair, the island seemed to agree for a very long time. You can't deny that Ben's insistence on delving into birth research had its benevolent and possibly beneficial qualities. Or that Ben genuinely cared about his people. That's what is great about Ben. He has selfish, terrible motivations and altruistic motivations. He is greedy to maintain power, but what he uses that power for most is to protect the island. He gassed the DI, including his father, but he was knocked around by that drunk. He's got layers. You can't boil him down to "bad" or "good". I cheered when he chose not to shoot Penny because that would have firmly tipped him into "villain" for most fans. I LIKE him just the way he is: gray, not black and not white.

that we will not really be able to evaluate his standing until the end of the show. It may well be that he is helping the Losties and that there was a kernel of truth when he announced the Others as the "good guys". He really just makes me sick sometimes. Like when he was cowering from the Alex-monster and as soon as he saw it was gone, he was done being upset. Emotion dropped. He's just too cold for me to trust.

I know a few people who feel the same. No matter how hard they try to gray Ben up, he's done too much to get on those people's nerves. I understand. I feel the same way about Locke. I've been wanting to sock him in the teeth since around Season 2, but that's because he got on MY nerves. Everyone has a fav, Ben happens to be mine. If he turns out to be a wretched evil douche, at least he was an ENTERTAINING wretched evil douche. And lightyears better than J.J.'s prior shades-of-gray characters in Alias.

You're entitled to your opinion. They ARE changing the characters. But that's because as you know people in drama change, evolve, and follow an arc. Of course, you may not like the way they are changing, but you can't really object to the concept of having the main characters gradually evolving different perspectives from those they had in Season One. I think you just REALLY didn't like Sawyer hooking up with Juliet ;) Or is it that the changes happened too fast? Too contrived?

A society that is run by Eloise who might possibly be separte from Widmore. Kind of a 3rd party. Ilana was sent with some helpers to the island personally to make sure that Ben didn't screw things up?

Could it be possible that Smokey judged Ben not for letting Alex die, but for not killing her as a baby? Remember Widmore telling Ben that if Ben was wrong and the island wanted her dead she'd die eventually. Well maybe Smokey saw that Ben eventually let her be killed and said "Ok, you did right in the end-I'll let you live now." If it were looking for him to be repentant about bad deeds, it chose the wrong thing. Of course he'd feel bad about Alex's death because he loved her. Why not see if he feels bad about all the people he's hurt or killed that he didn't care about?

And his people wanted to kill her.
In his own way, Ben was protecting the life of the mother of the child he would grow to call his daughter.

Because he's being judged on the one thing he regrets most, Like Eko. Also note that Lockes encounters with smokey have left him alright... Mostly i think, because there isn't alot of past misdeeds to be judged for/feel guilty about, the man has been screwed over his whole damn life, there was stuff he did on-island, none of it too bad and all in the interests of the island.

Seems to me Ben has a "fondness" for kids because of his situation. He never knew his mother and his father blamed him for everything. Rather than take that out on other parents (other than his own dad, that is...or maybe it's just the mothers) he took pity on the kids. Therefore, he could not leave Alex motherless. He also could not kill Penny because doing so would leave little Charlie motherless.

If you look at Richard during the campfire exchange with Widmore and Ben, it kinda seems like him realizing that Widmore is not the one who should lead them because his lack of compashion.
All because Ben couldn't leave Alex motherless.

Ben has "Mommy Issues"...AND "Annie Issues". It would also appear that Smokey wasn't 'judging' Ben on whether or not he's led a 'a good & righteous life'...like St. Peter at the pearly gates...or whether or not he was 'innocent or guilty' over the things he's done in his life...like in a court of law.
Smokey's 'judging' parameters have more to do with a level of repentance than any else, IMO. -

I assumed that Desmond was shot and almost killed by Ben. He then shifted back in time, to a point before Ben bought the bullets for the gun. Using extraordinary skills and luck, Desmond swithced the bullets with blanks. Then he shifted back to the present, to a point right after he was shot. The blank bullet caused minimal damage to Desmond. He was able to stand up and kick Ben ass.

I compared him to the Catcher in the Rye- he wants to protect children, shares a special affinity for them; he wants to be able to keep them protected from the harm, suffering, and abuse he went through as a kid. That's why he saved Alex, kidnapped Walt and Aaron and the kids from the Tail Section (to give them a better life), was so preoccupied with solving the pregnancy problem, and why he didn't kill Penny. Its all for the kids. Catcher in the Rye.

So, the same could apply to Roasseau. They are changing things, due to all the time anomallys-and we won't KNOW if Roasseau NOW remembers JIN,because she is dead.Make sense? -

I'm skipping over posts again, so this may have already been put to bed as well; is so I apologize in advance. Was the Usual Suspects being revisionist when it was revealed that Kevin Spacey was Keyzer Soze or had it been there all along? The one good thing about Lost is that none of us know who the good guys and the bad guys are. Lost doesn't and It has NEVER left the answers to be that easily sorted out. All the 'good' characters are actually bad people or have done rreally bad things. All the "bad" characters are chosen and have leanings into the good. It's all just a matter of perspective. Let me put it this way. A few years ago I posted on this board a long thought out theory on how the island was the Garden of Eden, the Others angels, Widmore Satan since he had been banished, and at the time everything really tied in pretty air tight. Now since then, the theory has pretty much been shoot to hell but this analogy remains. Imagine that the Island is the actual Garden of Eden. The Graden in which Satan tempted Eve into defying God, the Garden that God banished not only man from, but Satan as well. The Bible says that God placed angels outside the Garden to keep it hidden from mankind. What if these angels were the Others and Ben their leader? Now, looking back, everything Ben has done to protect God's Paradise has been a necessary evil that God has charged His angels with. Do these actions make the angels bad? No, their actions have all been performed righteuosly in the name of God. This wouldn't be revisionist, it would all fit from the get-go. Now, Ben has gone off the rails after seeing his daughter killed, acknowledged that Satan (Widmore) has broken the rules and Ben has lowered himself to fallen angel status. Can angels fall from the grace of God? Of Course! Lucifer did, he wanted to elevate his own throne higher than God's i.e put his own agenda before the Will of God. For this, Lucifer was cast out of heaven in the same way the Satan was cast out of the Garden of Eden for temoting Eve. (And no, Satan and Lucifer are not one and the same.) Okay, okay, I'm drifting, soryy about that, my point is...in God's perspective, whatever the angels charged with hiding Eden from the world must do to keep that paradise hidden is seen as righteous before God. Until, one of those angels puts his own agenda before God's. Is Ben good or bad? I believe he is bad, but he was once good. I believe the power corrupted a man who was truly in tune with the Island in the same way that Locke is now. What Somkey did was show Ben that he had a position of leadership in the Island's (God's) plan and blew it. Now he must serve and never be served, it's a just and exact punishment. As far as good and bacd, Cherry, it's all truly subjective. If the Others are indeed the good guys, and this is still possible, when looking at the files of our Losties, no wonder they considered none of them worthy!

I finally caught up on the Lost Tb. Whew! Chief and someone else up there were talking back and forth regarding Ben's judgment, and even though no one asked for it, here's my opinion. I think Smokey judged Ben IN REGARDS TO ALEX, he was judged on Alex as a whole. Smokey went to judge Ben on killing Alex, but any just judge would take all things into consideration which is why Ben had The Days Of Our Lives playing on the Smokey T.V. Smokey was sooooo ready to ice Ben's ass for 'killing' Alex, but once Smokey took all things into consideration it realized that Ben braethed life into death when it came to Alex. If any other Other (lol) would have been charged with killing Danielle that baby might have been snuffed out quickly. Ben however, still held to his humanity a little bit. This was, after all, pre-Purge right? Ben took pity on the child, let it live and provided a loving father and home and even spared Alex's mothers life. Yes, Ben was responsible for her death, but her life as well. Peraps Smokey let Ben live based on this. Perhaps Smokey let Ben live with the pain of it because it was a worse punsihment. Ahh. who knows?

All I can say is that, after the BSG ending, if Lost turns out to be Christian allegory (or "reallegory"), I will be steamed. Luckily, I don't think that's where it's going. I don't even think that the Egyptian mythology elements mean as much as you'd think. Those didn't look like Egyptian hieroglyphics in the Temple to me, although I'm no expert. I think it's a bit of misdirection.

You misunderstood what I was saying, I'm not concluding that Lost will be a "Christian" show, or even that the Island is the Garden of Eden. I was simply using a story that we all know to show Cherry valance that good and evil are subjective using the angels as a metaphor for the Others to illustrate how Ben's actions throughout the last few seasons could in fact be for a greater good. If the Island was the Garden, however, it would not make Lost a Christian allegory as the Garden of Eden is not a "Christian" story. That would be the New Testament. As a matter of fact, I don't remember mentioning Christ or a Messiah at all even the the show has gone to great pains to make those paralells.

Lost got me thinking of an incredible idea for a screenplay or movie and I wanted to run it by you guys to see what you think. My wife leered at me when I told her about it as if just having the thoughts would send me directly to hell. For a minute I thought she was Catholic, lol. Ok, check this out. At first I thought that while the Losties were time travelling they would come across people who would perceive them to be gods. Witrh their sudden appearances and disappearances into someone else's every day lives I thought it would be interesting if the Losties ended up becoming the blueprint for all of mythology and religion based upon what people in antiquity got from their visits. No way to pull it all off but another idea popped into my head as I was thinking it. Now, this has very little to do with Lost so if you're not interested just simply scroll down. What if Jesus gained the ability to conciously travel through time on the cross? Now, Jesus is God, or, in actuality, the Word of God so upon His death Jesus gained all of God's knowledge that He did not have during His life. Jesus Himslef said that there were things only the Father knew sucha as the time of the end of the world. Okay, I'm straying again, sorry. Before Jesus dies, His consciousness travels to the future and He ends up in the tomb looking down at Himself. Now according to the record skipping Lost translation of time travel, one skip could be one second, another could be one year. As Jesus lays His hands upon His corpse another time skip. Being that Jesus is actually touching His own dead body, the body travels with Him, hence, the empty tomb. He skips forward just a few hours and appears to Mary Magdalene and the other women and then to the Apostles, hence the resurrection. I thought it was kind of cool, very sacriligious, but kind of cool. Whaddayou all think? Of course, when He appeared resurrected to Thomas, He did have the puncture holes in His hands. Oh well, I just wrote this out quickly on an AICN Talkback so I gues there would be HOLES in it. Get it? Holes? Anyone? *crickets chirping*

When Ben was seeing Widmore off island he told Widmore that one of the reasons why he was banished was because he had a baby (which Im assuming was Penny) with a woman who was not an Other. The current rumor from last week episode has been that Eloise was Charles lover, but she was an Other. So could it be someone else that could be Penny's Mother and if so who? Or could Elie/Eloise have been banished earlyer and wasn't an Other any more?

Classic Ben in the beginning, don't know how he got the shotgun, but oh well, it worked.
I am leaning toward the Locke/Christian smoke monster theory. The made it pretty clear with Alex about the dead re-appearing, and Locke's other appearances before they went to the Temple.
Shots of Jameson don't go too well with egg mcmuffins at 4 AM over on times square. But man they were fuckin tasty!
But yeah, liked the episode.
We are getting lots of backstory stuff answered, but in the always LOST fashion. Never flat out explained for us. We create our own ideas and speculation. I think thats why some people do not like this show. Nothing is handed to you often. Use your heads mofos! -
When I saw that orientation video I think that it said that image was from some college campus off island. Some I assumed that when Alvar Hanso & Ann Arbor were mentioned that they were off island and had to be contacted via ether the Flane or the Submarine. Thst building seems a little big to have not been shown up till now.But who knows? There could be some big underground station hidden under the statue where Arbor, Hanso, excetra are stationed?
You could be correct about the dead body, or maybe Candle acidentally killed someone during his Orchid experiments and is trying to keep it hush hush? Maybe he lost his arm trying to silence someone about an experiment and was a no no? -

This week's episode was going well up until they used those horrible "images in smoke" effects. I'm rarely one to criticize our show, but think it would've worked better to go with manipulated audio instead of what looked to be budget-wise effects. The video-in-smoke would work for most any other production, but everything else on "Lost" looks so top-shelf that the unrealistic-looking judgement scene broke my suspension of disbelief. Oh, well. At least the presence of the "old" Locke made the episode worth watching. Next week's episode will likely use humor as a diversion. I suspect that, by series end, we'll find out that Hurley's imaginary friend "Dave" wasn't imaginary in the truest of senses. While he may not be dead (like those Miles communicates with), the character might be in another type of displaced state...

I felt they were quite effective to convey the needed emotion of the scene and it wasn't anything new. The first time that Eko was judged by the Smoke Monster images of his life flashed on the outside of the smoke. granted it was so quick that you had to freeze frame, but it was there. If we would have seen the other side of the monster at that Moment we would have seen all of Eko's life moments also, but that was to early in the series to reveal something like that.

Bilbo... I've got to take your word for it, because that CG certainly *looked* rushed to me. I will reiterate that I've rarely felt this way about "Lost" (and think it's more of a testament to their usually top-tier production values). As it stands, I can see Emerson eventually making some jokes about that scene. Pa... I'll agree that the effects worked from a story-telling perspective. However, they weren't elegant in the manner that so many aspects of "Lost" tend to be. They were almost---- dare I say--- Sid & Marty Krofft-like. While Locke's jabs still made this an episode worth watching, "Dead is Dead" just isn't at the top of my list for the season. But, hey, I get the feeling that the season finale is going to blow my list apart, anyway.

Anyone notice that one of the clips had Alex saying "I hate you"? I believe that was actually from a deleted scene from season 3 with Ben & Alex having an arguement in the Hydra office shown earlyer in the episode. -

I wasn't referring to your post specifically; there were some others that mentioned Jesus. I don't have a problem with fantasy/sci fi Christian allegory per se, it's just that I don't want it sprung on me at the last minute like the BSG finale (I know, it was more monotheistic than specifically Christian). Some people dug it, but I felt it was a let down. I think your story idea is interesting, maybe more on it's own than applied to Lost.

Alex was horrible. The scene where she slams Ben against the wall was hammy. It should have just ended with Ben realizing that he needs to help Locke.

No, when I said Lucifer and Satan were two different entities it was an aside mention. I'm not saying that Ben is either one of them, I simple used the metaphor of Garden of Eden to make it a little bit more easier for you to understand. You can't possibly have taken me literally...right?

While Smokie coming out of the holes and enveloping Ben was super good...Once he GOT enveloped, it got weak. I was reminded of the effects from "The 10 Commandments" there for a bit...when we saw Ben standing with nothing but smoke surrounding him. Then the 'roto-scoped' scenes from his past began to play which really needed to be more subtle....more organic to the smoky nature.
I would have lowered the opacity much more on those clips...so they blended in with the smoke more...they just stuck out like a sore thumb too much, IMO. I agree they should have focused more on the AUDIO from those clips and less on the VIDEO...and more flashing would have helped & would have been more consistent with previous encounters with Smokey (Eko's 1st meeting and Kate & Juliet's encounters, specifically).
I think Darlton knows the LESS you show...the more believable it is...that's why we never SAW any of the 0-6 magically 'disappear' off Flight 316...or we never saw Christian or Locke wake up and get out of their respective coffins.
I think they should have continued the 'less is more' CGI policy in the Judgement scene. That said...it wasn't a deal breaker for me...it just could have been handled with more subtlety if ya ask me.
This coming from a guy who ate up the 'ghosty, face melting' ending of Raiders when the wrath of the Ark was unleashed...but in subsequent viewings, the effects really don't hold up very well. I sure if Spielberg could have a 're-do' re-release of Raiders...that would be the ONLY scene that would get a severe technological CGI update.

but when exactly was the CGI on this show anything special? The smoke monster has always looked like shit and so did the explosion of the hatch. Lost has some of the best action and static shots of any tv show ever filmed but usually the effects are nothing to write home about.

Oh you can bet that Spelberg isn't the one chopping at the bit to CGI everything in the first 3 Indy's. Its George special edition Lucas. He would probably replace the preiest guy in Doom with a CGI version and have him flipping around in some bigger sword fight with Indy on the bridge which throwing flaming hearts. Im betting that Stephen is just doing everything that he can so that Goerge doesn't "fix" everything in the old movies like he did with the original Star Wars trilogy.

Hey, just trying to help. I actually had written 'more palatable' but just before I clicked Post I went back and changed it to 'easier' apparently forgetting to wipe out the word 'more.' So yes, I am grammatically challenged and now, like many others on this site, must respectfully bow out of any more attempts to help you understand this television show. Btw, I was thumbing through my wife's copy of EW with Jennifer Hudson on the cover and was just so pleased to find a picture of fucking Jacob inside. No spoiler warning, just a Lost headline which grabbed my eye and a picture of Jacob. You know, thinking about this season thus far, one thing that I'd like to see more of is Sawyer's LaFluer character. The way he is feared and respected by his underlings. How the guys in the monitor station don't want to wake him, and how Roger Linus is afraid but respectful of him. Add all that to his hook-up with Juliet, and it's obvious why the guy wouldn't want to leave 1977 Dharma!

from past episodes, but I think they need to step up their game for the wrap-up. As stated, Lost includes some of the most beautifully rendered scenes in tv history. They picked a great cast and location. Sometimes the effects aren't great imo, but they don't come into play often. All I remember is when Eko and Charlie(?) first saw the damn smoke monster I actually laughed, as I did when the hatch finally went overtime. Let's not even discuss the frozen donkey wheel. Does it ruin my experience? Not at all. Are the effects sometimes so terrible that it pulls me out of the story momentarily? On occasion. Apparently the folks working on the show feel the same way. It's a little beyond me how a show with an end date can be "rushed". Sounds like code for "This looks like shit...we need to fix this in the future." Let's hope the extra time helps them out, or that they stick with their strenghts and leave most of that stuff to the imagination. I just think we are gonna get heavy into the sci-fi section of the story and we don't need to venture into the Canadian woods version of Lost.

I love to read EW, but I've had a heck of a time getting in the mail in a timely fashion! Did you get yours for the week already, pa, or are you quoting that Lost story with Michael J Fox from their website? I used to get EW regularly in the mail on Saturday, but occasionally it would be late and come on Monday. Now it regularly arrives on Tuesday, sometimes Monday or even Wednesday! I've called to complain, but it never does any good. Ok, rant over.

I have a friend who's in contact with people at ABC and/or Bad Robot. Not going to name him or her. Everything this person has told me pans out to be true. Someone told me last week that there was a deleted scene that referenced STAR WARS. In the scene, Hurley is serving food in the DHARMA cafeteria. He overhears two guys talking about this phenominal new movie called STAR WARS. Hurley comments that he saw it and liked it a lot. I recently bought an EW at the grocery checkout line...got it home...and was surprise to find it was a two week old issue! I thought it was the store's fault...and read the Ain't It OLD News.
The next week I went to a different store...and that SAME issue was in THEIR newstand!
Think the economy has hit their distribution? Or should they change their name to Entertainment Bi-Weekly? Lol!! But I'm glad I missed that pic of Jacob!! That would have pissed me off.

In looking at the blast door map you can see that something called the Cerberus security system (or Smokey, as we affectionately know him) travels the island through underground tunnels. There are multiple vents, like the one Ben saw I'd imagine, scattered throughout the island. This is why it usually looks like it is bursting from the ground and why seems to have limited range. I think it was meant to stay near the Temple for the most part, and when it does use the vents it needs to stay near them. This is why Ben had the one vent in his house flooded, so the smoke couldn't just venture out on its own. Even more, the Cerberus is a three headed hellhound which guards the gates to Hell in Greek mythology. Each head represents past, present and future, respectively. All this fits in pretty well with all the dog theories and recent happenings. The smoke monster is a multi-faced security system that acts as judge, jury and executioner for the island. Now we just need to know how it got there and how the Others came to "control" it.

course to take with individual people, we again come back to the pilot of 815. People say he "wasn't supposed to be there" but in watching the old episodes, you could say the same thing about most of the cast. Sayid had a ticket for an earlier flight, but stayed to claim his friends body. Jack, Kate, Hurley, Ana Lucia, Sun, Sawyer...it goes on and on. I don't know what it means, but I don't see how the circumstances that brought the dead pilot to 815 are any more crazy or suspect than everyone else. I'm ready for a Lapidus episode, pronto.

Since I started the criticisms of this week's CG, let me just clarify. Whether or not the effects were rushed, the reality is that Ben looked to be watching an incongruent 2-D projection of images on 3-D smoke. Such a thing comes across as pretty artificial (to me, at least) and challenged the visual logic of a scene that brought the character to tears. The subsequent physical "pwnage" from Alex might have been believable--- had the video montage come across better. Using audio whispers would likely have been an effective alternative to establish the mood of the scene, but the creators looked to have been going for something "bigger." I'll give them credit for trying, though the execution just wasn't at their usual level. Again, this is largely due to most of the show's previous visuals having looked incredibly striking (the pilot episode's post-crash sequence, in particular). Whether or not anyone else agrees, I don't think this topic is worthy of too much debate here at AICN. It definitely isn't worth the hurling of personal insults between people who are *both* fans of the show, either. Just my thoughts.

Good point. I'm only up to the beginning of Season 2 in review so my memory of these things gets hazy. This boils down to my point though: did the crash of 815 always happen, or because of Desmond's actions do we have an anomaly which the island is struggling to cope with? We can agree that they expected the Ajira plane, but were there supposed to be other people on it? Let's say 815 has never happened but the Ajira crash always has. It would be kinda disruptive for all those 815 people to be shoehorned in, especially considering how many seats Hurley bought up.

I mean...there's a reason our core Losties were ON 815...it would appear they NEEDED to be there in order to come BACK to be part of the Dharma Initiative!
So...I'm guessing that the 815 crash predicated the need to make a runway for 316. But...By WHOM? WHO knew they needed that runway built? Jacob? Alpert? John Locke? Alvar Frakkin Hanso? Ack!! Sounding like a time loop to me!! -

it really wouldn't have mattered as the plane got torn apart by the magnet action. Perhaps our core Losties were on the Ajira flight the FIRST time the loop occured, but the loser between Ben & Widmore decides to arrange for them to arrive on the earlier flight to try and change things. So, I think it is an equal possibility that 815 did always crash, its just that our Losties weren't always on it. They were the original Ajira folks, but that situation didn't work out in a timely fashion so they arranged for the Losties to arrive earlier. Shoot some holes in this one for me.

that what happened before pretty much is happening now. There was always a crash of 815 caused by Desmond, however this was a different group of people than our Losties. I would imagine without the combination of Locke and Jack they probably just got wiped out or perhaps got sick like Danielle's team. Yes, she is a bit of a liar but it was clearly shown that her team members were trying to murder her; something happened to them. Then, our Losties land on the runway built by the Others. They interact with the Others, just like before, only under the leadership of Richard. Widmore finds the island, Locke moves the island because Ben was not saved by Jack. This time they all just go to the Seventies together. No Oceanic 6. They participate in the past and things come to a resolution. But Richard or Widmore, or perhaps the Losties themselves are not cool with the outcome. They start playing with time and arrange for the Losties to arrive early in order to change things. Hope that's a little clearer. No runway for 815, its always been an accident. Always a runway for 316 cause they are expecting the plane.

We've been so focused on the Losties using their trip to the past to change the future...Perhaps someone went ahead in the future and is trying to change THE PAST...from the future? Oh, God...the headache.

in the Widmore connection to 815. We know Widmore either owns or controls Oceanic Airlines ("These people do what I tell them," Widdy tells Sun). And Abaddon admitted to Locke he was someone who 'got people to where Mr. Widmore wants them to be', ie. suggesting his Walkabout.
We could go further with that; I'll bet you money the watch Jin was delivering for Mr. Paik was intended for Charles Widmore, a business partner of his. Could he also have been integral in setting up Claire's adoption? Or setting US Marshall (TM Tommy Lee Jones) onto Kate's trail? And people have discussed in this TB Ben's possible involvement in Christian's death, since Ben killed Locke. But how much would it fit into this shows love of 'parallels' for Widmore to have done Dr. Shepard Sr. in?

That's pretty much what I'm trying to convey. Yes, the Losties always landed on the island and they always got to the past somehow, and the whole situation has come to a head. I'm just starting to think they actually arrived the first time a little later than we have seen. This would fit in with the whole theory of older versions of the crew being holed up in the temple with the Others. Let's say the Losties arrive on 316 the first time, meet the Others, Alpert chooses Locke as the leader they have been missing since Ben died (or maybe he's around due to some island mojo) and then Widmore shows up and the Losties move the island to escape him. They end up in the past, do what they always do and things end badly. The Losties retreat to the temple and begin using Ben & Abbadon to postion themselves to arrive on the earlier 815 flight so they can "fix" things. Probably not, but it is a fun idea.

Just kidding...I have LONG had a theory that the Losties were all 'steered' onto 815. We know Abaddon steered Locke...I think Malkin was on the Widmore payroll, too...as was Hibbs...The farmer Kate befriended in Austrailia...Ol' "crazy" Leonard...Joe Inman...Paik...Liam...etc, etc. I think ALL the Losties were steered to the island...Hell, I think Libby steered Desmond to the island...with a free sailboat in her back pocket courtesy of Widdy.
Widdy controlling 'Oceanic' would just make it easier for him to corral everyone on the same exact flight on the same exact day & time. Even though it would appear that it just 'seemed' like coincidence...Like Oceanic not letting Jack on the plane...until he had to get teary and basically beg for a seat....and Hurley almost missing the flight...and Sun deciding at the very last minute to join Jin on board.
It 'appeared' random...when in fact...it was all a big set up.
Me & Pa disagree on this...but I'm even venturing to say that Kelvin was a Widdy 'plant' in the Swan hatch to condition Desmond to push the button for 3 long years...even testing Desmond on his dedication to the button pushing duties by luring Desmond exactly 109 minutes away from the button...and offer him his own repaired sailboat as a way OFF the island. When Desmond refused...a scuffle insues and Kelvin is 'killed' (HA! I'll believe THAT when I see it!)...and Des is too late when he scrambles back down the hatch to push the button...electromagnetic pulse goes off...Just as 815 is in the perfect 'window of opportunity' (Somebody else knows about that Lamp Post pendullum room, eh?)...and 815 is ripped to shreds in midair....on September 22nd, 2004. Just like it was 'planned' to do.
Fate...Destiny? Coincidence? I don't think it was ANY of those. The pawns had to be put into place.

... Milkshake, I can dig your theory, but am curious as to how it explains Locke being able to stand-up (to hang himself). While his assumption that he had a broken leg would explain his wheelchair use, how'd he able to negotiate standing upright? CB... you wrote about the runway earlier, didn't you? I think the interesting thing about the runway is that there could easily have been other pre-316 flights that used it. If we find that there are some "posers" (i.e. a grown-up Aaron) among the 316 passengers, that might help explain how they got on the island. I'm guessing that we'll know "when" 316 landed by the time the season finale wraps. There must be a reason that the creators been vague about specifics, and have only told us it's in the future. Here's my question; did they ever explain if Cindy the Stewardess was an Other before or after the crash? If she was with them beforehand, it would explain her actions while hanging with Anna Lucia, Mr. Eko and Libby. Heck, did Bernard, Jin or Sawyer--- the last 815 survivors to see her as a non-Other--- ever find out that she'd been hanging with Ben? I have a strange feeling that she, Mr. Friendly and maybe one or two other "old" characters will be popping-up before the series wraps...

Ben, Locke, Charlie & Mikial all had reasons for coming back. Ben & Locke were both choosen ones and ment to lead during their appropriate times. Charlie was saved from hanging and all of the other things that Desmond saved him from because for some reson he was ment to turn of the Looking Glass in order to allow the OC 6 to leave the island. Mikial kept not dyeing in order to fulfill Desmond prediction that CHarlie would be killed.
The way I see it Kelvin fulfilled his destiny in everything that he did with Sayid & Desmond. If you could come up with a plausable reason for him to come back I would believe you. But I haven't heard it yet. -
I can't remember if this has been said or not, but what if Libby is the woman that as been put it on the dock the non Other that Widmore had a baby (Penny) with off island? Maybe thats why Darlton said no more Libby story in order to keep a huge secret an actual secret?

A couple episodes ago I was on rant about how Kate was pregnant with an established character and the meeting of the past & future would be part of the Incident. The big problem with that notion is that it had to be someone already in the Seventies and the candidates were few. The idea that Miles is the culprit makes much more sense. Not to mention the fact that they haven't said Kate IS pregnant, even though that would make sense as well as far as replicating the 815 crash.

I do think Baby Kate could still be someone we've met before, if either she or the baby get left in the 70s. Dunno who it could be, though...
I don't know if Libby could be Penny's mom...seems like they're about the same age. Only way I could figure it, would be if Libby is like Richard...but that would make her an Other by default, right? -

People might be onto something as far as the island actually wanting Alex dead. It has no use for her mother and she has crossed Ben a few times in favor of the Losties, most notably when she released Claire after Ethan kidnapped her.

Pa...you asked for my theory as to why Kelvin's story aint up yet. My simple answer: Cuz...it would be a total mind f**k for Desmond if that dude showed up 'alive' again! Plus, I have a strong feeling we will see a scene where Kelvin knocks on the hatch door....Radzinsky answers and asks "Are you him"? Kelvin says..."Yes...yes, I am". Radz asks him..."What did one snow man say to the other"?...Kelvin answers correctly..."Smells like carrots".
Radzinsky thinks he's gotten a true Dharma replacement...explains the inner workings of the hatch to him...and Inman pulls out a pistol...shoves it under Radz's chin and pulls the trigger...spray painting the Swan hatch ceiling with grey matter. Then...he waits for Desmond to show up in the sailboat for his 'button pushing' conditioning.
This, of course is provided Radz SURVIVED 'the Purge' of '92. Is it possible that The Swan was the one D.I. hatch they DID manage to keep a secret from Ben...but NOT Widmore? Perhaps Ben knew about the Swan, he could SEE it from the Pearl...he just could never FIND it? But John Locke DID...thus 'one upping' the master for the first time in 2004? His first step in becoming 'the chosen one'?
As for Libby...I KNOW Darlton has said her jig is up...but I smell a white washing here. Both her and Kelvin/Joe have TWO connections each with the Losties...and now that were are rehashing the past, I can't think of a better time for one of those two to show up...right before a shocking

Ben did know about the Swan. Right before he gases his Father they talk about how they had just finished bringing supplies to the Swan and how that was their last stop.
As for Kelvin its could be, I'll believe it when I see it. It doesn't seem like they set him up for something like that. More of a throw away character. But you could be correct and I will happily admit it when or if Im wrong. -
Chuck E. Cheese? Well...we know he left the island in the mid to early '90's...(after the Purge) and some of Desmond's flashbacks with him were set in the late 90's, like when Chuck offer Des a shitload of money to stay away from Penny. So...that doesn't give him a whole lotta time to amass his fortune.
However...he had been 'leaving the island' as Ben chastized him last week...so perhaps he was going off island to invent/fund projects/invest in sure winners/make a ton of great bets on games he is told the outcome of (ala Biff in BTTF II)...It all depends on how much Sayid (or whoever) told him was going to happen. He is a 'wealthy industrialist...with his fingers in everything from home pregnancy tests to construction. IF he made this money on his own...he would have had to use his trips off island for his own personal gain.
If he didn't make the $$$ on his own...perhaps he 'inherited' it...or 'swindled' it...'married into' it. Either way...he didn't have much more than 10 years to amass a shitload of $$$ once he got off the island.
He sent Des on the sailboat race in 2001...and he seemed pretty wealthy THEN...and let's say he left the island in '92...that's only 9 years to go from wearing rags and ridin horses on an island to being 'king of the world'.

Tom said that he didn't get off the island often, but when he did he liked to live it up. Pluss all the money used for reqruitment. I suppose some was left over from Dharma but it can't all be.

Granted, the box may be just guns or something, but it is pretty obvious that some of the passengers on 316 have an agenda on the island, and that they are working together? Of course, it may not be for the Wid, but to me it seems a lot more fantastical that the 316'ers that now call the shots just suddenly found themselves on an island and decided to team up, seize control by force, make secret passwords and then say things like "Get everyone else, tell them it's time. And tie him [Lapidus] up. He's coming with us." The 316'ers are not just making the most out of the situation. They're up to something, and they've got a plan.Currently, I'm hoping they're working for the Hanso Foundation, and are sent to reclaim the island and reboot the Dharma Initiative. That would be awesome. The hippies are coming back, and this time they're making war, not love! P.S. CB, I hope you're not too offended by the flak you've been taking. I for one appreciate you questioning and challenging other people's theories, and calling their bluffs. They're pretty thin skinned if they take offense at that.

it seems likely that "what lies in the shadow of the statue" was a password or code to identify the other undercover agents. why else would they knock Lapidus out when he was unable to answer? why would they even ask if they didn't have previous knowledge of the island? and anyway it seems such an odd question to ask if you don't already know the answer. My conclusion: it's a password to know who's in their secret club, and who's not. I expect to be proven wrong very soon, though.

Yes...I think the statue riddle was definitely code that proves Ilana is on the 'inside'...along with her 'helper boys'...with SOMEONE...It's not unlike the 'snow man' riddle the Dharama folks used when ya get right down to it.
When the Widmore freighter folk were assembled...a lot of them did not know who their 'friends' were on the Kahana, so, it wouldn't surprise me if a lil code question was established to define 'friend or foe' with these folks on 316. Lapidus was def not a 'friend'.
The question is...which side is Ilana working for? She there to help Ben? Or Widmore? Or Hawking?
My $$$'s on Widdy...I mean...there's a war coming...and we only have 23 more episodes to get the players in place for it. -

Tuesdays are a harsh mistress.
I will try to watch Fringe tonight...but I'm afraid I've missed so many eps I won't know what the hell is going on. That senior Bishop guy is still awesome, though! -

Don't worry, Fringe has an underlying series arch, but each episode is made so that people can jump in and out of watching it without any problems.

Well Richard told Locke that he felt the Others were headed in the wrong direction with the firtility stuff. Maybe he or Jacob commanded the runway to be built be cause one of them wanted Dharma to come back in order to set things back on course?

SPECIFICALLY for the return of John Locke....However, because the first person Locke met when he leaped OFF island was Charles Widmore...they may not have counted that New Leader Locke would return with Widmore 'plants' on board.

My soon-to-be father-in-law is a real outdoorsy, mountain man type (lives in a little wood cabin, goes hunting and fishing every other day), and I got him into Lost a year ago, drawing on the survivalist angle. I just brought him S4 on DVD and he watched the whole thing in one day, then got on-line and caught up w/S5.
So my fiance comes in from work today and says that a tall, thin, bald black man gave her a large rucksack to give to me, and that she should instruct me to go on a walkabout. I open it up and it's a 'survival' pack, with a large knife, compass, flint & steel (one side of the steel has the Swan logo etched into it and the other side just has the word 'DHARMA'), a leather Dharma name badge, and a tinder box, as well as a big Mr.Eko Jesus Stick. Her dad made all that stuff and came up with the story to freak me out. -

At my last job...for my birthday, somebody got me a six pack of 20 oz. bottles of "Diet Dharma Dew" (I'm a huge Diet Mountain Dew freak)...and an industrial size jar of "Dharma 'Mammal' Crackers"...they attached generic white labels with the Swan Logo on them. I swear, some companies would really benefit from making special edition LOST themed versions of their products! Maybe they will for the series finally.
I thought 7-11 turning a bunch of their stores into "Qwik E Marts" in celebration of The Simpsons last year was a genius marketing move. -

so... if someone knew what you meant when you said "shadow of the statue" then chances are that same person would about the Temple - could she (they) be working for Richard?
it's been three years since the 815ers got unstuck in time and left behind Richard and Locke's "people" - with the whole island to themselves...
seems they finished the runway - and they no longer have a submarine - we know The Wid's got his people out in the workd - but we ALSO know there is a Mittelos Bioscience out there too...
now for me at least, the assumption has always been that Ben's people in the Rest-of-the-world are one in the same with Richard's people - Mittelos - and I'd say that it would be a helluva lot easier for THEM to get people on that plane (that has conveniently had a runway built for it) considering they're a little more IN THE KNOW, than The Wid...
I think, bearing in mind "there's a war coming" - and not discounting the fact that Richard and The Wid may well turn out to be on the same side (as they once were) I think it is less likely that Iliana & co would be working for The Wid and much more likely they be Others (like Big Gay Tom) who are under instructions from, say, Eloise Hawking
...or they could just be a bunch of people who found a stash of guns and a cryptic note about statues and asked one of the people (Lapidus) who seem to know things about the island... -
Love your Lost story with your soon to be father-in-law! What a cool guy. I'd love to have some of those objects he got for you. Heck, I just need to get to Cafe Press and get a Dharma mug.

Others, Widmores, DI or just random people. It would be kind of dull if they were just Others, wouldn't it? I mean, the Others are already established on the island. Who would the 316ers be at conflict with then? And Maniaq, if they are just random people, why would they knock out Lapidus just because he didnt know the answer to a cryptic question about a statue they themselves don't know the relevance of? I'm saying either DI or Widmore. Probably Widmore, but crossing my fingers for DI. Guess we won't have the answer in this episode anyway. We'll have to be patient. Haven't even thought of it. But that will have to go on my list. Im currently doing Juliet, Sun & Jin. Then probably Richard and two others. Maybe I'll take a break after that to design some other non Lost stuff. Eventually I'll prbably have to do some dead ones like Charlotte, Ethan, Tom & a few others. I usually like to do 3 at a time so any suggestions for 2 living characters to go with Richard?
