Marty McFly looks at RUNAWAY BRIDE

Published at:  Jul 29, 1999 4:37:11 AM CDT

Ol Marty McFly decided to do his duty for filmdom and went and checked out RUNAWAY BRIDE, a film I won't see because I have an adverse reaction to Richard Gere movies (notable exception being PRETTY WOMAN and AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMEN). I think it's that stare look in his eyes that harkens back to that song... "The Lights are on... But you're not home... Your will... Is not your own..." But maybe it's just me. Let's take a gander at what Marty McFly thought...

This is Marty McFly, back after seeing the "highly anticipated" reunion
of the stars and director of Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride. I liked
Pretty Woman a lot, I mean, what is there not to like. Julia Roberts
and Richard Gere are two very attractive and charismatic people and it
was a classic fairy tale story with a modern twist.

Not to get off the subject but before the film I saw a trailer for the
new thriller Double Jeopardy with Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd and it
made my hatred for trailers go so strong that I had to control the urge
get violent. Why see the movie now, just about all the suspense has
been ruined in about 2 1/2 minutes.

Anyways, most of you know the plot from the trailer, which gives away
way too much of the story. I mean we all know (Big spoiler if you are
an idiot) Julia and Richard end up together but still (I'll stop here
before I get into my trailer hating rant again). Richard plays a USA
Today reporter who writes a story about a woman who has ran away from 3
grooms at the altar. He gets most of the facts wrong in the story
though and is fired by his ex-wife/editor (Rita Wilson). For
vindication, his ex's current husband (Pretty Woman cast member and
Garry Marshall regular Hector Elizondo) tells him to go write a story
about the woman, only this time go to her town and get the facts
straight. Naturally, while he is getting his story, she falls for him
and he falls for her.

This year there has been a shortage of romantic comedies and so far
this year, the best one I saw was Notting Hill. This is not quite as
good as that film for two reasons I can think of. First, I like Hugh
Grant much better than Richard Gere because he is more of an everyman
and second, Notting Hill was so much more realistic. Notting Hill had a
plot I could relate to but in this film, everything was just too
coincidental and everything is just so perfect right up to those so-
damn-cute-you-wanna-throw-up credits where the cast dances around to a
hit song. Not that Notting Hill was completely realistic, just a lot
more than this film.

Still, like most films in the genre, Runaway Bride is a guilty
pleasure and, though not on par with Pretty Woman, it will keep you
smiling almost its entire running time. Julia Roberts, like in Notting
Hill, turns a character you probably won't like from the start into a
girl who you just fall in love with as Richard Gere does. She is
luminous every minute she is on screen and she shows again why she is
one of the most successful leading ladies. Gere has a lot of charisma
but he just looks like a movie star in every scene, with his hair and
dimples, and its distracting to me, but then again it could be cause I'm
a guy.

I'm not sure if they're releasing this one too close to Notting Hill
that people won't want to see such a similar film so soon. Still, this
one is a by-the-numbers crowd pleaser, right up to the casting of Joan
Cusack as Julia's best friend. So much sweetness and too many white
teeth to last me a while, I think I'll see some sharks eating people to
get my mind off it. See 'ya in the future.

    American Gigilo

    by samthelion

I also don't like Richard Gere, mainly because he's better looking than me, but I do think that his early movies - Days of Heaven, American Gigilo, and An Officer and a Gentleman - were very good. Days of Heaven didn't require him to do a lot of acting, but Gigilo is an underrated classic. Ever since they remmade 'Breathless', his career and choice in roles has been, in my opinion, continually on the downslide. But do check out American Gigilo, not because it's a Gere movie, but because it's a Paul Schrader movie.

    Notting Hill more realistic???

    by delsol

Than what? Neverneverland? Oz? You think it more realistic that spilling OJ on a big star going incognito in the streets of London is going to lead to love and romance? More so than a newspaper reporter going to a small town to research a story and getting to know the bolting bride and what makes her tick and subsequently run? Puh-leez. Don't make these movies more than what they were intended to be: escapist romantic, feel-good fairytales. I am surprised the buzz on this one is pretty good as forced-together type projects rarely live up to expectations. Now on the subject of Hugh Grant: How can anyone like him? He's not even Everyman in England. Am actually cringing that this guy finally makes it into the big time and that he will be polluting the screening. How many times can he play the same flop-haired, speech-challenged part?

  • Richard Gere owes all of his success to John Travolta in the early 80's. After John dropped out of American Giggalo and Officer, Richard Gere was right there for Paramount to sign. I', suprised Richard was not casted for Stuart Little. I guess they didn't want it to be a love story.

had a really dark and disturbing ending, at least to me. man gets fucked over three times by same woman, gets convinced by his friends that he screwed up, throws out his self respect, goes back to her. at the end, that sequence on the bench was really chilly, where he's staring off into nothingness, wondering "what the fuck did I just do?" if the roles had been reversed (as in hugh g doing the fucking over to julia r and she goes back to him) I have a feeling a lot of people would have been pissed off.

    by mean ween

Why would USA Today run a story about a woman who has run away from the alter 3 times? Answer: They wouldn't. This is just a weak-assed plot point/excuse to have zen-wannabe-richard get together with julie-big-lips. I hope the enlightened one shaves off all that grey hair and sets himself on fire to protest all the shitty reviews this film's gonna get.

    Days Of Heaven warning

    by roger t shrubber

Interesting that we got on a Days of Heaven tangent here, but I have a word of advice: rent before you buy. I am a huge fan of The Thin Red Line (best movie of 1998, IMHO) and also thought Malick's first movie Badlands was pretty damn solid. But DOH was virtually unwatchable. In fact, it was playing at a theater here in Portland, OR, last weekend and for the first time in my life I walked out of a movie halfway through. What a stink-bomb! Anybody who liked this should e-mail me and tell me why because I thought it was a heaping, steaming turd of a film.

    by john cocktosten

Give me a f---in break!! OK, There s alot of Julia bashing out there, and frankly I think she would be the first to admit that Mary Reilly sucked. But for Chrissake!, she's not negotiating a peace treaty, she making entertaining movies; for the first time again in about two years. Enjoy it for what it is!! an entertaining movie. It's great.
At least it's not two hours of flatulence that you try to label art, like Eyes Wide Sucked.
And Julia will make a dramatic masterpiece within two years, count on it.

Oh yeah, Richard Gere is underrated!!! He's got the same problem as Redford, he's so at ease that critics dismiss him as acting like himself.

    I AM OUTAHERE!

    What acting?

    by pilcrow

Richard Gere is acting like himself. So's Redford, so's Roberts, so's Hugh Grant...do I need to go on here? This is the Hollywood way, or as actors refer to it, "Bringing the part to the actor." If you want to see what acting is, I recommend watching Streep in Sophie's Choice or Duvall in The Missionary. THAT'S ACTING. Gere had a lot of promise once, but now he just shows up, flashes that empty-headed smile, and goes home with a few more zeros added to his bank balance. Neither Gere nor Roberts stretch in this film, and I don't see it happening in the future. Partly because they're unwilling to take the risk, and partly because Hollywood is unwilling to finance it when they can rehash old successes to make new money.

DAYS OF HEAVEN *Is* Available In Widescreen

    by mrbeaks

It was released, along with a number of other Paramount titles, last year, and it looks pretty damn good for video. Just a reminder, actually, that I need to upgrade to DVD. I'm just a tad disturbed that Harry has implied that he'd rather watch PRETTY WOMAN (an atrocity) than DAYS OF HEAVEN. For Nestor Almendros' cinematography alone, DOH is a must-see. BTW, has anyone ever noticed that PRETTY WOMAN boasts photography barely worthy of a porno? Just one of many things that's always irked me about that film.

    Re: Days of Heaven

    by w. leach

    (1) DAYS OF HEAVEN is avaliable on video in the widescreen format, as well as on DVD. (2) I consider DAYS OF HEAVEN to be Terrence Malick's best movie. (3) In addition to AMERICAN GIGILO and AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, John Travolta was also slated to appear in Gere's DAYS OF HEAVEN role. (4) DAYS OF HEAVEN is also memorable for playwright Sam Shepard's presence. (5) I can't tell you how much I absolutely LOATHE the 1983 Gere remake of Godard's BREATHLESS. Talk about a waste of celluloid. I'd rather be dragged naked across a field of broken glass...I'd rather have hot, candlewax sex with Rosie O'Donnell...I'd rather...well, you won't wanna know how far I'd go. Have you ever wanted to kill a movie? Just zap it out of existence? BREATHLESS '83 is the one for me. Aaaaarghhh!!! Too bad MST3K won't be around to skewer this turkey. (6) Someone asked why Julia Roberts continues to do these cookie-cutter romantic comedies. Because it's the only thing she CAN do. Put her in anything else (SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY, DYING YOUNG, MARY REILLY, etc.), and you couldn't draw flies to the theater. Stick her in predictable, fluffernut junk like this, NOTTING HILL, and PRETTY WOMAN, and voila! Box office success.

Pretty Woman sucked and so will this film

    by chimp1

Sometimes I think I can divide the world up into people who liked "Pretty Woman" and people who hated it and Harry, it makes me sad that you fall into the former. When I was forced to see PW against my better judgement it was on video after it's run and I had heard all the hype. It was offensive drivel that had not been topped until Titanic came along to present an even more ridiculous "romantic" situation. The whole idea of the happy, friendly hooker getting her John to fall for her should offend anyone of even moderate intelligence and with any respect for women. Runaway Bride does not look quite as bad but still will be patronizing schlock. I will avoid this film like the plague. Try instead the antitheseis of these films, Godard's "Contempt" for a real film about romance with real people and real consequences.

Big T here. First off in defense of Garry Marshall I must say that i loved his last film The Other Sister (and to others who saw it I agree the lesbian thing was pointless)and I will see his next film here despite the fact that I cant stand either actor more of a Roberts thing oh I mean god she sucked in my best friends wedding. So if I were all of you i would go see this film cheap show of course, and just give it a chance. Big T out.

    McFly vs. Gere

    by ferris bueller

Man, this Marty McFly guy sounds like he's got some problems with Runaway Bride. Why? It looks like a solid movie. Yes, you said it was a good movie overall, but what's with the Gere bashing? He's a good looking man, but that doesn't mean that you can't give him the chance to make you believe that he's the character in the film. The only film that comes to mind, that I disliked his performance, has to be The Jackal. That was one time that comes to mind, and that wasn't a romance themed movie. Gere has successfully played his parts in his other Romantic movies, to me. I also hate the fact that he's great looking and everything, but don't be a prick because you don't like it. I'm a guy too, so I understand where everyone is coming from. Life moves pretty fast, you don't stop and look around once and a while, you could miss it. F. B. on R. B.

Julia Roberts is NOT Attractive to Hetero Men

    by mycroft holmes

Is it just me, or does anyone else out there find Julia Roberts repulsive?

It's not just her blood ties to Eric Roberts.... although that sends shivers up my spine, it's the fact that she has about 20 more teeth than the average human being.

She should be cast in the X-Men movie as 'Teeth Girl'. Has anybody seen her dental records? That girl is ALL TEETH!

Although, it's nice to have her around... if she's appearing in a movie, it's a good bet that it's either a 'Chick Movie', or just plain BAD.

    Cheers,

    Julia's physical humor

    by long duc dong

Blame it on My Best Friend's Wedding. Ever since she fell off the bed, we'll have to suffer through her awkward, unnatural, forced 'zaniness.' Seeing her screw up her face and do that little dance with the oscillating fan with a gum bubble in the trailer is enough to know that it'll be around for awhile. We don't need Julia to be just like us, we need her smiling. Is she really wearing an apron in this movie?!?

    by all thumbs

Ok, I have no problem at all with the sassy aka smart-ass grandma because I know too damn many of them and at least one of them is mine. I hope I'm a sassy ol' biddy when I reach 100(because that's when I've decided to actually say I'm old no matter how many wrinkles I get). On the Julia Roberts side of the rants...she's actually very talented, but she takes really crappy scripts like I LOVE TROUBLE and MARY REILLY. I fall into the "I like Pretty Woman...and own it!" category. Yeah, it's not realistic at all, but...neither is PHANTOM MENACE, any of the DIE HARD movies, or (and I'm going to hit where it hurts people) SPEED 2. (GOTCHA!) It's all in good fun and, hopefully, good movies. You know, I read the book "Mary Reilly" and it was pretty good. Then I saw the movie...remind me not to do that.

    Random Thoughts

    by anton_sirius

    1) Julia Roberts is not, and never has been, attractive. 2) Who up there DARED compare Titanic- a lush, wonderful throwback to Old School Hollywood Romance- with Pretty Woman, an irritating piece of dung that exemplifies everything wrong with Hollywood today (from the flaccid performances of the 'stars' to the mentally enfeebling plot to the horrific disregard to a little thing us folk with working brain cells like to call 'continuity')? Why I oughta... 3) Young Gere did show some promise (he wasn't great in Gigolo, but there was potential there) but he quickly sold what little talent he had for mainstream success. And DON'T insult Redford by lumping him in with Gere; while Robert's career may suffer in comparison with his longtime partner/rival Paul Newman (and not many careers wouldn't) it's still miles better than the drivel Gere subjects up to time and again. Plus Redford went out and became a pretty good director; do you think anyone would let Gere behind a camera? And for any Gere apologists out there, I've got two words for ya: FIRST KNIGHT. 4) English accents are inherently funny to Americans. So are ludicrous fake French accents (but not real ones.) Italians are pretty goofy too, and Russians. But Spanish accents are boring, and don't even get me started on the Germans. 5) Everyone who (like me) thinks BWP will open #1, even if it's in half the theaters Runaway Bride is, raise your hands. 6) I like Godard. He's silly.
