Verbinski Dumps PIRATES IV, Hugs BIOSHOCK...
Merrick here...
Looks like Gore Verbinski won't be directing the fourth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film, currently in development.
Verbinski has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he will not helm a fourth installment that's expected to set sail in 2010 with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Sequel is in development but not yet greenlit. It's unknown how Verbinski's ankling will affect the pic's schedule.
Verbinski will instead focus on other projects that include "Bioshock," a Universal Pictures adaptation of the bestselling vidgame that has a John Logan script and is likely to be Verbinski's next film as a director.
...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.
The visually arresting BIOSHOCK game (HERE

A sequel game will be released later this year and is already available for preorder (HERE

My bucket list is complete.
-
I'm pretty sure it's being released this fall or winter.
-
Bioshock 2 isn't slated till a november release.
-
Verbinski belongs to POTC like Donner to Lethal Weapon.
-
Caught that. Bad cut and pate on my part.
-
What's it doing here?
-
tasty
-
are nt in it and they focus on cap Jack instead.
-
Seems like there're plenty of headlines to rip from.
-
walk the plank ye braggart before i pump you full of lead from my ak-47 motherfucker!
-
Great news. PIRATES was played out (does this mean no more PIRATES or just no more with Gore?), plus we haven't had a decent underwater movie since THE ABYSS.
Bring on some Bioshock. I think the Big Daddy's (those big hulking diving suit monsters, if you're not familiar with the game) will translate wonderfully to cinema.
Even if the script/plot are weak (and lets face it, this is a video game adaption so they probably will be) it should be a visual and fx treat for the eyes. -
Pirates 2: Stagnetti's Revenge.
Yes, it's the most expensive Hardcore Porn ever, but believe it or not, I'm still quoting some of the dialogue from time to time! ("What an ass-pirate!") -
...but it sure smells good!
-
A movie might be cool.
-
not a good game.
-
It might not have revolutionized gameplay like Halo, but there's an interesting movie's worth of screenplay in the game.
-
Please. They play poxy audio and won't shut off. And you know, while I'm here I should mention those 'you are a winner' ads that flash a thousand different colours per second and are determined to bring on seizures. They're hideous and offensive. I know AICN gotta eat and that's cool but is there an ad approval process or anything?
-
Ok...so I don't blame him for not doing Pirates 4...I mean it is part 4 and honestly, while 2 and 3 were ok, they were not great and felt like a waste of my time. They weren't as fun as the original. I don't know if 4 will be any good at all. But what is he thinking doing a video game based movie? We all know these rarely work...even when they are based on games that have perfect movie storylines.

PIRATES are ruining the FILM INDUSTRY! Stop bigging them up, AIC
by silentbobafett2
-
I'm shocked the films turned out as good as they did but it's time to stop.
-
The effects are pretty damn good. I was shocked. Great sex scenes too.
-
Wonder which "ending" they'll go with, if they stick to the original story at all...
-
who would have thought that he could make a decent film loosely based off a theme park ride? I know that there are a lot of Pirates haters out there, but at least the first film was pretty good, and the other two had their moments. The 4th should definitely dump Knightly & Bloom and all the other baggage of the trilogy.
-
Ankling? Don't have my English/Variety-Speak dictionary handy. Can anyone translate for me?
-
Ha, ha, just kidding.
Jude Law as Jack
George Clooney as Andrew Ryan
Colin Farrell as Atlas (heh)
Cate Blanchett as Margot Tenenbaum
Russell Crowe as Frank Fontaine
Jackie Earl Haley as Peach Wilkins
Robert Downey as Dr. Steinman
Johnny Depp as Sander Cohen
and Every Damned Girl Actress in Hollywood as The Little Sisters -
Anyway, Bioshock the game had an incredible, scary atmosphere. If they can translate that to the film, I'll be in line.
-
Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, Courtney Love and Lindsey Lohan for starters. I'll check TMZ.com to see which actors turn up in LA County jail tomorrow morning for the male ones.
Christina Ricci WOULD make an excellent Baby Jane, though... -
With a great story and amazing visuals.....nice for a movie.
-
I've got my fingers crossed.
-
BurnHollywood you're giving me nightmares now brother...
Just imagine some dank, dripping corridor. A scratchy noise, some eerie footsteps, and a creepy girlish giggle. Something is approaching round the corner...
...Then Winehouse, Britney, Courtney Love, and Lohan appear in the harsh strobe light. Their anorexic bodies twitching and their eyes all puffy and bloodshot.
Skank ho attack man. Skank ho attack. That would shit me right up.
-
You turn to run but standing right behind you is Nicole Richie. Her face smeared with her own faeces.
She hisses the words "Hello, is it me you're looking for" and then all you hear are your own screams... -
Agreed. Beautiful design/art direction, interesting story, solid controls, good difficulty (i.e., not too hard for my lame ass gaming "skillz"). It's not a twitch FPS, but more of an adventure game in an FPS-ish model.
We're currently playing Dead Space which is fantastic too - a little more stark with the design, but outstanding graphics, interesting gameplay mechanics (zero-G, RPG type upgrades, etc.) and a *super* creepy atmosphere (the audio work is incredible).
-
Money talks...they'll pay Gore to do POTC4
-
I though Verbinski did a surprisingly great job with the first one, but the two sequels were shit. Time to get a fresh perspective in there and try to shake things up. Granted I will probably wait for video or cable or pass all together no matter who directs.
-
The guy defied the odds and made a dated Disney ride into a very entertaining movie (granted Johnny Depp had a lot to do with it). Since virtually every videogame movie are crap and are DOA, Verbinski may be the guy who can defy the odds in that genre too.
-
Lots of potential there..all of it missed. probably for the best a new director comes on board. The only Pirates movie that should be made is one centering on the Barbossa-Jack relationship...Besides..Geoffrey Rush needs more screen time...watching him as Barbossa is really the only reason to ever watch part 3.
-
which deli do i get that from?
-
As in: "those Variety cocksuckers need a good ankle-fucking."
-
Who are you kidding MrMerle?
-
AWFUL
-
Gore Verbinski has been ankling his way through the whole Caribbean.
-
Who cares about a Bioshock movie?
-
I think a lot of people forget that Verbinski can be really good. The Ring, and The Weatherman are both great movies.
-
Pirates should have stopped after the first one. I found the arc of the story uninspiring.
-
This and Shadow of the Colossus on the same day? Shit man, that's awesome, ok, the movies been in the pipeline for some time but I forgot about it. If it doesn't go the Pirates-way (cheeky, family fun with supposedly hot actors) and dares go it's own route, it could be an experience to remember.
-
No quality live action game movie has ever been made. It'll happen one day, but as great a game as Bioshock was, I'm very skeptical about its ability to translate to the big screen. And Pirates. . . 2 was so-so, 3 was bad. The sea monster in 2 was pretty awesome, but in 3 it was dead on the shore after we were led to believe it was still alive. A N T I C L I M A C T I C. The rescue from the afterlife and the ridiculously and unnecessarily complicated plot just stunk. And the ending was riddled with plot holes. . . why did the whole British fleet just sit there?
-
it was a game. Gameplay was definitely weaker than the story.
-
Jump off the mediocre franchise which has run its course and onto a franchise based on the best videogame ever. I can't wait to play Bioshock 2 and I hope that it'll be as kickass as the first one.

by nasty in the pasty
POTC III was ATROCIOUS.

Every single page has one and you can't turn the sound off! Fuck that shit.
-
The success of the Pirates films is something I will never, ever understand. I haven't heard anyone (outside these talkbacks) say that they really loved them. And it's usually LOVE of a film that pushes it into the Box Office stratosphere. What the hell happened? They seem to be in that group of films that were amazingly successful but that no one liked, such as Godzilla, or Pearl Harbor.
-
I saw the rumor, and at first I thought that Zac was going to play a young Captain Jack Sparrow. Maybe I am wrong. I am glad that he was dropped (or was cut) from the "Footloose" remake, because he isn't man enough to fill Kevin Bacon's shoes. At 21, Zac is too young to play still in high school. Producers should only cast actors in their late 20's and early 30's to play highschoolers.
BTW, Michael Bay needs to direct this. -
I agree about dumping Knightly and Bloom. I really liked them in the first film, but when i heard about the sequel I just didn't see how they could fit them in with a good story...and to me they were forced characters. I think I had a vision where Jack Sparrow would encounter new people each movie and help them discover things about themselves they didn't know existed like what he did with their characters in the first film. But carrying them in each movie was just pointless. I love Keira Knightly...but not when she's wasting my time...haha
-
I loved the first one. I just didn't care for the sequels. They lost their fun and sense of adventure and just turned into a load of backstabbing, betrayal and CGI story that was so hard to follow that you couldn't wait for it to end.
-
no, really
-
with today's technology, they could make a pretty faithful visual presentation. don't mean the movie wouldnt suck but hey, its something.
-
... color me excited. Verbinski can be a decent director if he tries.
-
Verbinksi totally screwed up the 3rd Pirates film, which was an incomprehensible mess. Fresh blood is a good thing. More Pirates PLUS fresh blood is even better. Arrrrr!
-
Damn, but she and her character sucked so bad in the films, damned near ruined them. Hopefully in this new one we'll get more Jack and Barbossa. Although I wouldn't object to a sexy female pirate steaming things up, makin' Jack sport some wood and I ain't talking about no peg leg, matey. ARRR!
-
I can't listen to an oldies station without wetting my pants.
-
So I'm not thrilled with Verbinski helming anything.
-
The 2nd Pirates film was an abomination mate. Pirates 3 was a step-up, although that's not saying much... Curse of the black pearl still remains the only watchable PotC film in my opinion.
-
I mean, I would love to see another Pirates movie that didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth (the first one really was a great Captain Blood with Zombies picture) but Gore needs to be freed up from this franchise. Mouse Hunt was wonderful and for a PG-13 remake he did a pretty reasonable job taking on The Ring. I want to see what else this guy can do. The Pirates franchise always felt tacked on after he did such a good job with the first one, and my problems with it start and the scripts and mostly end at the casting (of Knightly). I haven't played the game, but it looks very up his alley. Here's hoping.

I will miss seeing Kiera Knightly's flat chest and ass...
by leafar the lost
...in the fourth Pirates movie. Clearly, her stick figure body was the real reason millions of people bought tickets to see the three previous Pirates movies. They will have to find a way to include her in the next movie. Her transsexual beauty will lure millions back to the movie theaters.
-
I'll bury it in the sand for a thousand years and it'll become priceless!!
-
come here Bioshlock, ya greta big lug. Give daddy a hug!
-
Didn't we already "miss" them in the first 3 films? (What was there to see?)
-
I was disappointed by the game, but the story, setting, and design was excellent. It could make a beautiful movie, if nothing else. Verbinski might have the chops to translate it well to screen.
(I thought Bioshock was lacking compared to System Shock 2, which it was trying to emulate. A bit dumbed-down.) -
with Verbinski out of the way, he'll finally get to Avenge cuthroat Island and geena Davis will work again! (cue maniacal laughter)
-
Shut up, Bouncy X! Everytime someone here says shit like that, you give bad lurkers bad ideas! Is it not enough that we're already getting a Monopoly movie???
-
had horribly forced character arcs, is all I know. And I dont know nothing else.
-
01. George Miller 02. Kevin Reynolds 03. Martin Campbell 04. John McTiernan 05. Joe Johnston 06. Robert Zemeckis 07. Ron Howard 08. Stephen Hopkins 09. Richard Donner 10. Michael Bay Wolfgang Petersen, Tony Scott, Jan DeBont, Antoine Fuqua, Peter Berg, Phillip Noyce, Roger Donaldson, Peter Hyams, Andrew Davis, Renny Harlin, Tim Burton, Brett Ratner, Simon West, John Moore, Stephen Sommers.
-
seems unsuitable for this
-
Will & Elizabeth's forced arc in Pirates? OR The replacement of "Winston" with an Ernie Hudson clone in GB II? Now, there's one to ponder!
-
because I need a change of onderpants.
-
in the 50's. Just saying. It's pretty important to the whole flavour of the game.
-
Whoever is taking on adapting this video game to cinema better not be retarded. I cant even concieve of somebody messing up this story. The story is already fantastic, if they dont adapt exactly what happens why even make the movie? Which is why it should be good right?
-
Definitely not "dumbed down" at all. When I play a video game, I want to have FUN, and Bioshock provided that.
-
done and done
-
Neither came close to capturing the magic of the first.

Will it be the same without Gore?
Well, probably. -
One of the few games that is truly cinematic. They will need to expand the story of course. I can see them doing this through flashbacks to Rapture's 'glory days'.
-
these are just begging to be made into films.
-
I wouldn't mind seeing Ryan Gosling take on the lead role. He's proved himself a good actor, and I'd be curious to see what he can do in a big budget sci-fi/horror/adventure film environment
-
It's a done deal
-
CGI or Man-in-Suit?
-
But after watching a few youtube vids I think it's right up Gore's alley. Pirates IV isn't all that appetizing anyway. Even if they did have some amazing visuals and sweet ideas, the sequels were just too much.
-
I'm so glad Verbinski's still attached to Bioshock. He's far and away the best candidate for the job. Nobody else working today has the necessary visual flair and eye for art direction, not even my boy Fincher. (Finch is the strongest visual director around, but Gore trumps him in art direction.) That's the most important thing about making this right, capturing Rapture in all it's creepy Art Deco glory. I really do think this is gonna be the first GOOD video game inspired movie.
-
Bioshock was one hell of a FPS. I'm still waiting for a System Shock movie though... Shodan, the ultimate cybernetic dominatrix.
-
Big Daddy's BETTER be practical
-
Would be a great director for this... Dark City and Bioshock had a very similar atmoshpere
-
Should do Monkey Island, instead (though they ripped it off, heavily). Have a ninja kick Jack's arse at the end of the flick.
-
It's a good question... I'm convinced only an amateur could conclude there's ANYTHING worse than a false Winston; it strikes at the very core of my soul!
-
Kind of like what was done in Silent Hill. But I wonder who'd be able to move in such a suit. It'll probably all CGI.
-
look and feel to it...and look how well that did.
-
but look what he did with THAT, so he might be able to actually turn a video game into a good movie too. Bioshock was damn good and yeah, visually, it's gotta rock.
-
Ken Levine isn't working on it, and the details they've given out so far are fucking horrible. I'll wait for Levine's next game.
-
A shot to the ankle, like with a pipe or something?Fucking Variety and thier retarded monkey writers. They all need to be sent to gitmo for thier ongoing jihad against the English language.
-
I'm sure Verbinski will find something weird and wonderful he can play up in his movie, but these video game adaptations leave me cold. Let games be games and movies be movies.

More Rumors On The BioShock Front
by elvispresleehorsleyharveyoswaldoprahwinf
Author John Shirley is slated to pen a Bioshock novel. Shirley is one of the seriously OG founders of the cyberpunk movement in SF literature.
He also co-wrote the screenplay to the first Crow film with David Schow. Shirley also reportedly has a few other screenplays based on his novels currently in various stages of studio kick-about. Honestly they should let Mr. Shirley adapt the first game along with prequel material and a new bigger ending for the screen. -
Of insanity!
-
I can't really explain why. It had this unforgettable feeling. The ending itself lingered with me for days.
-
Used to a compositor from memory, that said some of the effects that got thorugh on Pirates where unforgivable, and some just unforgettable. I'll wait till I see at least a still.
-
I like your list. My favorites for the film would be George miller, John McTiernan and Robert Zemeckis.
-
Wow, that's a fucking HUGE red flag right there. Mr. STAR TREK NEMESIS himself. What a fucking toolbox.
-
I enjoyed the hell out of them. Yes, all of them were too long and too convoluted for their own good, but there as a series they all gave us much-needed swashbuckling adventure, plenty of humor, great set pieces, a number of memorable original characters, a rousing score, some twists and turns and
I thought the last 15 minutes of At World's End were a great conclusion to series. I think a 5 or 6 year hiatus is perfect and then I look forward to seeing Jack return... but please no Zac Efron or that british buffoon from the MTV awards. -
Chest was all fun all the time. Can't believe the hate. It's Temple Of Doom all over again. And stop blaming Verbinski and start blaming Elliott&Rossio for the annoying mess of a plot that was the third one.
-
Fuck them for being so stupidly arrogant to try to use their own moron "words" as substitutes for perfectly lovely standard English.
I didn't know what the fuck 'ankling' was, and in about 15 minutes I'll forget once again. That's 15 minutes of waste of my neurons on those ass-fuckees. I hope their copy editor gets whacked in the head with a frying pan and wakes up permanently unable to approve stupid shit. -
for some reason have seen it now in several languages too.
high hopes for Bioshock. -
Boy, that would be swell! BTW: Based on what I was suckered into with the first 2 PIRATES movies (I learned and skipped #3) I will not be seeing any movies by the guy again ever. Why? One word: BORING.
