Warner Bros. Orders Another HANGOVER From Todd Phillips!

Published at:  Apr 06, 2009 2:53:19 PM CDT

Beaks here...

We've seen studios lock down talent for potential franchises prior to the launch of the first film, but what about sequels to modestly-budgeted R-rated comedies starring three actors who've never "opened" a movie before? That's a new one, right?

It might seem like Warner Bros. is acting a tad presumptuously by greenlighting a follow-up to Todd Phillips's THE HANGOVER two months before the film hits theaters, but, having seen and reviewed it, I think their confidence is entirely warranted. I would love to see Phillips and his three leads - Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis - reunite for more blackout drunk debauchery. It's just... how do you top losing a groom in Las Vegas on the eve of a wedding? Losing a baby would certainly raise the stakes, but they already did baby endangerment humor in the first one (and rather effectively, I might add). Perhaps they could set the sequel in Los Angeles and have someone lose their teenage daughter or niece to a pack of unscrupulous porn producers. Anyone who's seen Paul Schrader's HARDCORE knows this premise is positively loaded with comedic potential.

Phillips will write the sequel with frequent collaborator Scot Armstrong. THE HANGOVER was written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (with uncredited revisions from Phillips and THE BREAK-UP's Jeremy Garelick). According to Michael Fleming, deals have also been struck with Cooper, Helms and Galifianakis.

THE HANGOVER opens nationwide on June 5th. Check out the theatrical trailer here.

    One word. . . .AdventureLand!

    by darth_kaos

It bombed out the gate. I think the Aprow,Alpho. . .I don't know the director's name. Anyway, him and his 'group' and that 'style'(white guys doing crazy shit, etc) is running out of steam. I thinks a tad premature to talking sequel for a movie that isn't even out yet. Even if some critic like it, it doesn't mean it's going to be a hit.

You obviously didn't see Adventureland as there is very little "Hollywood" about it. Who cares if it is a hit. It was a great film.

    why does...

    by seth cohen

the sequel always have to follow the same gimmick? sometimes its more fun to see a new story with familiar characters... rather than a rehash of a previous film... probably the reason why so many sequels FAIL!

exactly how much time has to pass between your sentencing and your first day of filming for a convicted rapist to become fodder for a wacky cameo in a comedy movie? Fingers crossed for Josef Fritzl in Ghostbusters 3!!!

    Another Hangover?

I thought the baby getting hit with the car door in the trailer was funny stuff.I saw Adventureland and didn't think it was that funny, except the Bill Hader stuff. Not bad, but more of a dramedy.

    Hang & Over? Well Hungover?

    by hoorayforeric

Damn...this movie already took my movie idea called, "Blacked out".
Is it that good? Old School is a classic guy comedy and this seems the same type of "guy" comedy. Good stuff. People wanted more "Old School" sequels....so I'm guessing they're latching onto this. Is this another T. Phillips sleeper?

The Hangovers'd 2: Rise of the Blackout

Just thought I would head all possible sequel titles off at the pass. And Darth, I'm assuming you're either not white or not Jewish with that oddly-specific jab at Apatow's race, but either way, Todd Phillips and his crazy white Jewish hijinks have been around since 2000's 'Road Trip' (at least), well before this recent "Apatowplosion." I also think you've got to just like to bitch about whatever's been perched atop pop culture for too long. Apatow and his gang are ruining comedy? Really? Would you rather go back to a few years ago, when all we had to choose between was "Big Daddy" and "The Klumps"? Shit, this is the best comedy has been since at least the '80s.
