What the fuck? Is it like... if you live in Hollywood and you do something totally original your dick bursts into flames and your wife dies of aids? -- Any reason they can't make a show about a girl who moves from Kansas to NY to work in the art world WITHOUT shitting all over a beloved classic? Cocktards.

Wow. The OZ books must be in public domain...

    by bones

..There are so many shitty OZ remakes these days. The sad thing is they are not based on the books, but the overwhelming juggernaut, the 1939 MGM Musical "The Wizard of OZ".
I would love to see Guillermo del Toro do a version of the story that is closer to the book...but once again, that would be like a remake or reboot in some people's minds. Return to OZ from 1985 was much closer in tone to the books than the 30's film was---and it was a huge flop because people only know the movie.
Hollywood is bringing me down these days.

Is Boorman still doing his OZ?

    by sherman_lives

I saw some art here of John Boorman's animated Wonderful Wizard, faithful to the original book. I've certainly been enjoying the current Marvel Comics adaptation.

    by oisin5199

adapt the damn book! It's never been done before. Why we do we need constant updating? It's already an archetypal thing and every other television show has to do an 'Oz' episode. Can't we just do the book? If Burton can do Alice, can't we get someone decent to do Oz?

    by the_skook

"...will take its title character from Kansas to Manhattan, where Gale contends with a wicked boss in the art world..." Well it's not the 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' then! It sounds like the producers are saying: "What L.Frank Baum meant to say was..." Some things can be updated and provided with different settings, Shakespeare being a good example, but there are SO many good original ideas out there, why 're-imagine' a classic so much you change its sentiment and story. The lunatics are in charge of the asylum.

The Oz characters as crime fighters. I think the Tin Man was a Terminator-type robot & Dorothy could teleport when she touched a ruby.

"Dorothy Gale" = "Ally McBeal" + "Smallville".

    by leafar the lost

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I know where this is going. In "The Wizard of Oz" Dorothy gets her head whacked during a tornado, and she has a dream about the Land of Oz. All of the characters in her dream are based on real people in her life. Now, in "Dorothy Gale" most of it will take place in our real world, but during her "dreams" we will see her in the Land of Oz, and the people in her life will have their fantasy counterparts.
If this is done right, it might actually work. Everyone is familiar with the characters from the "Wizard of Oz", so it creates a base audience that will tune in. Even the Syphilis Channel's "Tin Man", which really sucked, got high ratings, and it was a mini-series with characters similar to the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy Gale's dreams may be similar to Ally McBeal's hallucinations. I am assuming that this show will be more of a comedy than a drama.
I also see a correlation between Dorothy Gale and Clark Kent. Both of them come from Kansas, and both of them go to a Big City to make it big. I am sure that Jason Katims and Bridget Carpenter would try to make this like “Smallville”, so that the special effects can be kept to a minimum. Now what I am hoping for is a Batman prequel show called “Gotham”, which would be about the early days of Bruce Wayne.

    Buzz Maverik's Dorothy Gale

    by buzz maverik

Okay, the network has brought me in to fix this so we're okay. The FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS guys can stay on staff, because guess what, Austin is going to pass for Kansas now. We're not going to New York, we're staying in the heartland where a modern young Dorothy DID go over the rainbow as a kid but unlike the L. Frank Baum books, never went back. Now, she's a single mom holding down two jobs, hoping to move out of the trailer park and she can never forget the beauty and excitement that she gave away to return to ... all this.
