Quint at ShoWest! Some TREK, TRANSFORMERS and SHERLOCK HOLMES footage was screened!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with what will be my final bit of ShoWest coverage, filling you in on what I saw and did today, the last day of the convention. Specifically, the awards ceremony where they showed some footage from upcoming films.
Thank the lord of movies Rachel McAdams was given the Female Star of the Year award because I got to catch a glimpse of SHERLOCK HOLMES. If you missed my earlier report, those fuckers hid that footage from me, so I skipped what I thought was going to be an industry wankfest in order to be earlier in line for the next presentation (Disney) and then they up and showed Sherlock Holmes, Terminator: Salvation and Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince footage.
Of those, the only one I was bummed about was the SHERLOCK HOLMES footage. They didn’t replay all of the Holmes footage, just a quick 20 seconds or so that featured Rachel McAdams in sexy turn of the century London lingerie. She’s undressing for Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes and pulls a dagger-like broach from her hair and makes to stab him. Downey grabs her wrist. She answers with a punch from her other hand, which he also grabs. He smiles, a “gotcha” look on his face. Then she knees him in the nuts and he falls to the floor, the smile fading from his face.
We get Holmes’ POV, sideways McAdams from head to toe bending down to look at him. Then we see Holmes handcuffed to a bed, McAdams looking over him. Downey realizes where he is and gives a “Well, what’re you gonna do?” shrug.
So, at least I got something. The filmmaking looked very modern, not trying to put on a sepia tone or something. I don’t know how it’s going to play out, but I will say that McAdams was smoking and Downey looked at the top of his game, oozing charm and likeability from every pore, even in the few seconds of footage that was shown.
And McAdams was shaking nervous when she accepted her award and made all the more crush-worthy for it.
Also saw scenes from a couple of Paramount flicks: TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE FALLEN and STAR TREK. The Trek footage has been seen and written about a lot, but I’ll give it a bit of a go-over before knocking out the TRANSFORMERS footage, which was the first stuff shown outside of the trailers.
The Trek stuff was for Chris Pine who was accepting the Star of Tomorrow award and was, of course, a Kirk-centric scene, him picking up Uhura at a bar. He asks what she’s studying and she tells him, not thinking he’ll know what exactly it is. He surprises her, saying her study focuses on alien language and culture. She’s impressed, but still sly.
Pine plays Kirk as cocky and a bit drunk. A big dude comes up to Uhura and asks if she’s being bothered by this guy and she says very much so, but she can handle him. Kirk gets into the meathead’s face… like I said, cocky. The big guy’s friends come up and he says something like, “What’re you going to do? There are four of us.” And Kirk responds with a “I’ll let you get a few more so this will be a fair fight” and gets a punch in the mouth for it. He smiles as he grabs his bleeding chin and then fights back, taking the big dude out.
Pine was pretty good, I thought. He was certainly not imitating Shatner, but had the charm. I’m interested to see what exactly he brings to the full picture.
TRANSFORMERS… Michael Bay accepted the Vanguard Award and then showed a full scene and a quick edit of action from the flick.
The full scene was Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox going into Sam’s parent’s garage to talk with Bumblebee, who is, apparently, still having trouble with his voicebox. He’s able to cough up a few staticy words, but still communicates mostly through pop songs (lame).
Shia tells Bumblebee that he’s going away to college and can’t bring him along. Freshmen aren’t allowed to have cars at his college, apparently, and Sam doesn’t need protection anymore anyway, he says.
As he talks with Bumblebee, Fox is outside… we see that the Witwicky house is being repaired… so I take it this isn’t too long after the first one or there was a bit of action that happened prior to this clip.
Anyway, Fox stips out of her black leather pants and jacket, revealing a dress… Prom? Something. But Megan Fox stripping is a-okay for whatever reason.
Back in the garage, Bumblebee isn’t taking the news well, dramatically crying (window-washer liquid) and waving his arms. This could have actually been fairly emotional. LaBeouf is playing the scene that way, but the robot is so over the top I don’t know if it was supposed to be a comic scene or not.
So, the scene wasn’t all that great, but the montage of action was fucking awesome, as I’m sure Bay would say. We get a look at the Devastator (massive and pretty sweet) knocking the hell out of Optimus. The shot is from far away and Optimus is fighting in a large, open grass field in bright daylight. He’s hit and sails through the air towards us, hitting the ground and rolling to a stop right at the camera. He sits up and spits out something metal (robot tooth?).
There were quick flashes of a lot of cool action. There was a Decepticon with giant saw blades that cuts a car in half, splitting up Shia and Fox. There was a shot of a decepticon bug being forced into Shia’s mouth… another shot was of a transformer fly that Shia has pinched between his fingers… and a lot of quick big action scenes… a transformer that is two giant wheels, ‘splosions, etc, etc.
Looks like more of the same so if you hated the first movie you probably won’t like this one much more, but I hear that the action makes the first movie look like DRIVING MISS DAISY… and that Bay learned a few lessons from the first, focusing on the robots more than the humans this time out. I hope so.
Okay, that’s about it. Had a fantastic day… nice free dinner at the awards ceremony and a fantastic 30 minute chat with the living legend, Sir Michael Caine, earlier in the day. It’s been a great day and now I must pack up for my trip back to Austin in the AM.
Thanks to Heather Lewandoski for making this ShoWest experience so flawless and stress-free, unlike in previous years. And thanks to you guys for following along!

How did Devastator look? I can't wait to see that in IMAX.
-
While this doesn't sound anything at all like Sherlock Holmes, it has nonetheless piqued my interest.
-
You are correct sir. Have been sick of him since I saw his face.
-
In the Work Print.
-
Like the majority on here, I love RDJ but those scenes didn't sound very good, but I'm sure they probably play out better to actually see it instead of describe it.
Transformers 2. Not sure what to say about it that's not been said in a number of other talkbacks. And there you go... transformers bodily function jokes! Everybody's favorite.
And hopefully Chris Pine can pull off a decent Kirk for Star Trek. I still think he was one of the very few bright spots of Smokin' Aces.
As always, nice reporting, Quint. -
You get a prize! Fucking wankers.
-
I don't care. These aren't real movies.

DO THEY APPLAUD AT SHO-WEST FOR CRUSHING QUALITY CINEMA?
by creepythinmanspreciouslittlelife
A bunch of corporate scum backslapping each other over the terrible state that North American cinema has become because of them. But everythings fine as long as braindead shit like Transformers and Star Trek keeps getting made. Fuck ShoWest. How many buisness cards did you hand out there Quint?
-
What the fucks with this shit?
-
It's Guy Ritchie.
-
I thought he was an AICN writer...What happen?
-
... are really gonna have a field day with this. Crying bumblebee? Pop song communication? Spitting robot teeth?
I expect a virtual masterclass in histrionics to be forthcoming. -
Lets get all the Transformers whiners that they didn't make a 1980's toy commercial into some kind of Oscar winning epic, and then lets get all the blind trekkies together to bitch that a seventy year old man can't play a 20 year old any more. And as they bitch, the registers will ring by the vast majority that really don't care what color truck Optimus Prime was, or who played Captain Kirk 40 years ago. Maybe this time will be the time that the talkbackers will realize that when their wishes are granted, movies fail, studios lose money, and nobody cares. And when they are ignored, that's when success happens.
Transformers was the success story of it's year. Transformers 2 will do even better, crying robot and all. Star Trek is tracking incredibly and will outgross every other Trek movie ever, securing sequels and causing fanboys to cry for years to come. And the movie audiences will be entertained.
Noncents, what are real movies? -
Fuck all you haters.

i dont give a fuck if it was like the 80's cartoon, or if it was too different than the 80's cartoon. if i wanted to watch an 80's cartoon, i would watch an 80's cartoon. I wanted to see giant robots fighting each other.. instead i got a shitty love story that didnt make sense, slap stick giant robot comedy (well, this family has something that could change the fate of the entire universe.. but their wants us to be quiet so we'll just sneak around in the backyard... fucking.. ridiculous.) then when the robots finally did fight with their $200+ million budget, i couldn't tell what the fuck was going on.
-
money. Good on the team that squeezed it out. But, they should come up with a new property, concept, or title, instead of luring people with the name of a property that they have no intention of presenting properly. That's false advertisement.
-
c'mon, with this shit the hate just writes itself. I'm passed caring. I find it unbelieveable people accept this shit as 'awsome' It's kinda like seeing what 'Batman & Robin' did to the Batman mythology only hearing people saying it was a great movie. That's how much it fucks with my head.
-
Carry on.

OH AND HERE'S THE R-RATED BRUNO TRAILER

I have to admit I liked the first one, but only because as action fare went, it's everything for which Bay is known...and giant robots, so that's a cut above for him. As to why the crowd at ShoWest adores what no doubt seems subpar, is it not obvious that the industry crowd (and its respective middle management) knows what the audience wants in terms of putting butts in seats for summer when they make the gross of their annual profit? This--as if anyone didn't know--has very little to do with satisfying said audience. Having worked at a theater for a combined (non-consecutive) six years and listening to middle managers drone on about all the money they were going to make was nauseating.
-

hated the first but if the second is mostly robots fighting,...
by bmacsmith
then i'll be behind it. the first one should have been big and stupid with lots of robots beating the shit out of each other, not big a stupid with a few robots hiding from humans and making pee jokes. come on Bay, this is so not hard to fuck up. stop trying to be human
-
So, drop all the character stuff that saved the first movie (to a degree)and focus on the explosions. How about 'not shooting all the action scenes in close ups' or 'not using 5 different angles for a dialogue scene'. Surely lessons that would be better learned.
-
As a child i liked my Transformers a lot.
The toys, not the toons, because back then here in Germany the public television wouldn't show a series that's basically toy advertising and there were no rpivate stations. Yes, I am that old.
I really enjoyed Bay's movie, found it to be an almost perfect summer movie. Big robots, good action (though admittedly better to be watched from the back rows of the theatre), top notch fx, a hot babe and a good dose of humor. Yes, I thought the film was really funy.
Being unable to understand all the hate I watched an episode of the animated series online. I couldn't possibly stomach another one. Its fucking retarded toddler television. Get over it, people. I seriously hope you won't be too depressed if the upcoming "Telebubbies - The Motion Picture" doesn't live up to its source material. -
Bay knows how to blow things up --- but unfortunately he doesn't know how to shoot those appropriately.
-
that you deem childish. It's about respecting it, ignoring the bad and enhancing and updating the good, and respecting the audience with a worthy adaptation. I've not seen the new BSG, but I remember the original as a child in the 70's. Viewing it now, it gives off a cheesy, disco vibe at times, but there were solid concepts there that apparently the new one was able to reinterpret into gold, according to the fans of the new version.
-
insert emoticon of disgust here.
-
Thats disusting! How can you have any idea what the films going to be like from that?
-
every second there was a 'characer' not named Meagan Fox onscreen i wanted to puke. Dont get me wrong, he fucked up the action too, but at least it had SOME good moments. the story, dialogue, characters, etc. were filler and Bay can't do it, so he shouldnt even try. He only knows blowin shit up, and he seemed to hold back in the first one.
-
With the Peeing and Crying and jokey Radio. Which would be expected had they kept him a Volkswagen!
It is really funny to me that in the comic and the cartoon, Spike and Bumblebee have a real, best-friend relationship with converstation and adventures..and in these films, Bumblebee is obviously Sam's pet robot. Which is all that Bay and the writers seem to think that the robots can be.
Oh well. -
Michael Bay just shoots hours of coverage and stitches together a horrible patchwork. He and Bruckheimer are primarily responsible for the death of the action movie. It's exactly what Jim Cameron was talking about on the T2 commentary - when he said today's action directors ignore the axis so the geography of the scene becomes confusing to the viewer. No way i'll see Bay's new piece of shit.
-
Megan Fox is in black leather pants? I'm there.
-
I'm for both. I'll watch both. I think I'll like both too-well w/ the Big Robots(Hitting Each Other) you just KNOW I'm gonna go for that. As for Uncapie, he had a similar falling out w/ Harold and Drew here as did Minor-Jeff, complained that he wasn't being treated fairly for his reports and postings etc. No I donno exactly what was the real story either but that was the deal.
-
Surely the only lesson he could have learned from Transformers is: STOP F***ING MAKING FILMS!!!!!!!
-
Dahhhh YAH dat one only brought in over 700M round the world--YOU HACK!!!!! No more !
-
after armageddon or at least pearl harbor
-
you know, the characters of transformers go beyond the shitty cartoon series. There are years of more established and mature comic tales to these characters. It's like saying the only Spider-Man material is the 70's live action show. The first Transfomers film was enjoyable as a stand alone giant robot film, but as a transformers film it was fucking awful
-
But at least it's better than Transformers, which is for retarded assholes. It's funny reading the defensive posts of the idiots who like that shit. "When I was a kid, blah, blah, toys, blah, blah, cartoons, etc."Why not just fess up and admit you're an asshole?
-
focusing on the robots more than the humans this time out."Yes, it really should've taken a whole movie to figure this lesson out. What a moron.
-
You wrote: "Why not just fess up and admit you're an asshole?"
I don't know...why not just fess up that you have sex with your own sister?
-
Which are you: Star Trek asshole or Transformers asshole?
-
I still can't get over how terribly embarrassing the first one was, and the new one sounds just as bad.
-
If you are a kid, you can be into that Transformers shit and not be a retard. Kids like stupid shit about robots, so you got to let that slide. But if you are 13 or over, what the fuck is wrong with you assholes?
-
Transformers II will still be crap but will make more money than Wolverine.
-
Sounds like all three scenes Quint mentioned needed a corny-ass trumpet "Waa-waa!" at the end.
-
Blockbusters so I will go and see Transformers 2. I will also probably buy it on Blu Ray when it comes out. Transformers had many, many flaws and is pathetic in some parts but is still very watchable, if only for the bit action sequences.
-
nothing about MEN in Black III?
-
and cries in the second. Here is and he cries in the second. Here's hoping he takes a massive robot shit on someone or has has a robot period in the 3rd one! Bay, make it happen, because your fans demand it!!!
-
get the fuck over yourself. i can't stand you fucks who think your taste is the be all end all of taste. people like different shit. but what else do you expect from talkbackers on this site?
-
I'm a fan of both. I think ST may turn out to be pretty entertaining. As for TF, yes, I'm one of the whiners that lament it not being closer to the old series. But, "Dingbatty" hit the nail on the head with using Battlestar as an example. Filter out the worst of the property and make something from the best of it. I mostly disliked TF because to me it was a bad movie, not just a bad TF movie. I don't like seeing some beloved concept from my youth not living up to the potential that was mixed in with the silly aspects. There's nothing wrong with some nostalgia, folks. And as I've said before on this board, does Batman or Superman really deserve to be treated SO much better? Is a character created to sell funny books to kids in the 30s that far from a comic and cartoon created to sell toys? In fact, concepts like Transformers and G.I. Joe wouldn't have lasted so long if their wasn't more to them than that. It's not like we've got a MASK movie coming soon.
-
At the end of the first one, his voice had static, but it was apparent Rachet had fixed his vocal ability. I thought in the sequel he's gonna be talking up a storm like he does in other incarnations....fuck you, Bay.
-
I was sure that they wouldn't repeat the idiocy of robots imitating human bodily functions again. The further I get from my initial enjoyment of Transformers, the more I see what a sub-par movie it is. Michael Bay is the master when it comes to action, but is it too much to ask for a script that makes sense and doesn't throw all reason and logic out the window in the name of a bad joke? Sigh.
-
1. Rogen I can tolerate only if Rudd is around or Heigl in her undies.
2. Rachel McAdams is in Sherlock Holmes??? Why didn't you say so before? I went from a maybe to a definitely on that point.
3. I hate Michael Bay too, but let's all relax. They're just movies. Go watch what you want, avoid whatcha don't, and live and let fucking live.
4. Is there anyone on here over the age of 30 who actually uses the word "haters"??? -
i delved into some nerdiness so you don't have to (not defending just saying what's out there.)
in the prequel comics Bumblebee has once again been damaged in the voice box, its a weakness apparently.
in Bay's defense, it was said that the budget wasn't there to focus on the robots in the first movie, i also believe he didn't have faith in the effects to make them emote with enough personality. thus we got a lot of sam and other humans.
yeah it sucked, but knowing some harsh realities i can give him a break there.
-
Just said Star Trek is for assholes and Transformers is for retarded assholes.Don't mess up your pants, buddy.BizarroJerry has it right. That guy's a double asshole and don't care who knows it. You should be more like BizarroJerry.
-
And Orci and Bay are the artists in residence of these mouth breathers. Just when you though the stupidity couldn't get any worse...Bay and Orci step up and knock one out of Stupidity park. Crying robots, robots spitting out "parts", sweating and farting....oh sweet Jesus FUCKING Christ. And don't say it is a "Kids" movie or a "toy" movie...that is no excuse for this kinda shit. For fucks sake guy even if you don't respect the material at least respect yourselves and the Fucking customer. No grown man, who sees himself as a professional and artist could write or direct that kinda fucking shit! It is as if you as saying "We know we are mediocrities, we know we've fooled the suits into thinking we are talented when in fact a Fresh Film school grad has more talent and heart". I realize you are simply milking the cow as long as it lets you, but at least fucking try not to look so obvious about it. Fucking Hell Bob...you are a writer...FUCKING WRITE! I and others have flamed you here for well over a year...it is because we fucking care man. Somewhere in you is a REAL writer..someone who loves and respects the craft and is capable of producing honest, GOOD material. For Gods sake man...You've read the greats, you've seen well written films; I ask you..isn't there a just a tiny part of that money hungry black pit you call a soul that wants to be remembered for something other than Crying Pissing robots and fucking Xena? We're not saying there is a Godfather in you...but fucking hell isn't there at least an ESB quality script in you somewhere? Dude..Sack up...give quality a chance you might like it.
-
when they screen the part where the sexy female lead does something risque or "sexy". That screams..."we have to hide the pure shit that is our film, show the geeks some T&A to cloud their minds and make them forget their questions"

I thought he was moving away fromt he poor humor? Bumblebee crying? I really hoped this movie would shut up all the haters, but looks like its going to generate more, including myself.
-
then why the fuck are you on a talkback ABOUT transformers and star trek? all you are doing is trolling... plain and simple. why are you wasting your precious time? you are a troll, plain and simple.
-
They aren't as emotionally or intellectually undeveloped as you might think. If I'd seen a crying pissing robot when I was 11 or 12 I'd still have thought it was fucking Lame. I was 11 when ESB came out...and even then the best part of that Movie for me was when Yoda was sitting there explaining the "Force" to Luke...that was one of the best scenes in any film, well written, and well acted..even by the puppet. I remember sitting there wanting to believe that was real...amazed by the mysticism and weight of that scene...all the explosions and space ships could not outweigh that part for me...and I was 11. "Kids" are NOT morons...they are simply small adults...they comprehend, they can handle a lot more intellectually that we adults often give them credit for. Then again maybe todays kids ARE retarded, since most have never read a book, or had any adult responsibilities handed them, or done more than play endless hours of Halo while mom spikes the Kool-Aid with Ritalin...maybe today's kids CAN appreciate this kinda 5yr old level, Teletubbies simplicity...but I hope not.

Like Transformers I, Transformers II is clearly for 8 year olds.
by rev_skarekroe
And like Transformers I, Transformers II will probably have masturbation jokes that are inappropriate for prepubescents.

everything he has made is pure shit, worse than anything uwe boll has ever made, serious.and he married madonna shows he has no fuckin taste.. RDJ & Judelaw worse casting of the year and iron man was fucking shit.. robert downey go back doing drugs and kill yourself.

Sign above says READERS TALKBACK. I read, I talked back. You don't like it, grow a pair and get over it. Bad enough you like robots and/or space ships, but don't fucking cry when someone don't agree with you. Jesus, you got no dignity, man.

Lets focus on the good, "The action was fucking awesome"
by ganymede3010
Who cares if the Robot uses his windshield wipers. This movie will kick the shit out of everything this year. The only one that can compete with it is Avatar.
-
I think it's vey possible to use effects to get these digital characters to somehow emote, even if we're talking robotic characters. If R2-D2 can emote without a real voice or a face, why not these guys? I dunno, maybe the maker of a TF movie could actually go out on a limb a little, take up the challenge of making them real characters. Don't just decide to not bother. I understand the need to focus on the humans in these movies, but maybe at least put the human and transformer characters on equal footing. I can't stand a film maker's attitude that "This premise is silly, so we're just gonna make it brainless fun." If you think your premise is done, perhaps you should find a movie based on one that isn't!
-
when John Turturro got pissed on and then that computer guy made a ham radio out of a computer and ate a plate of donuts.
-
Don't you think if you had a new-model Camaro that turns into a bad-ass robot from space, you might go with one of your "fall-back" colleges if your first choice doesn't allow freshmen to have cars?!?!?!?!
-
these guys can't rise above pissing robots and lame masturbation jokes. I know..you expect better, or at the very least least logical story lines, so do I. But you just have to keep this in perspective given whence it came. I keep hoping Bob and friends someday prove me wrong, that they really are gifted story tellers...alas they just keep letting me down. Perhpas there is no hope for them...forever relegated to making movies for complete retards and those whose career goals include a being a road tar remover at a carwash.Hey Bob...I'm sure it pays bank...but dude; the girls over at Spearmint Rhino have more respect for themselves than you seem to have.
-
We should forget that nonsense and simply ask the screenweiters to give their plots a little internal logic.
-
I've read through the posts and as usual there's a lot of anger, bu on the whole it's just dissapointment.I'm a Transformers and Trek fan - I have been since watching both as a kid. Transformers was new and Trek were re-runs, but I loved every minute. I've rewatched both with my kids now and while they loved them all I do see fault with Transformers. Trek holds up much better. With this in mind I think the 1st TF was OK (not great). My biggest issue is it being PG-13 (since my kids are 8 and under). I believe (notice believe, so I may be wrong) this rating was due to A) the drwan out masterbation reference, and B) pissing robots. Otherwise I think it was PG.I was initially worried about Trek, but have since warmed to some of the aspects and am 'hoping' for the best.
-
Last post title was supposed to be 'Transformers and Trek'By the way I have no problem with films being rated PG-13 or R when the material needs it, but I don't think TF needed the scenes I mentioned before. For example: Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were PG-13 and the story/action better fit a PG-13 - IMO.
-
the point is this... you're on a website that follows movies that usually feature "robots" and "spaceships". you are obviously on the wrong site. and learn to follow your own advice, and don't be condescending to people that do like movies with "robots" and "spaceships". because, jesus, soooo many people don't like movies with those objects.
and what the hell... "don't" and "don't got no dignity man"... work on your fucking grammar, sir. -
Apr 03, 2009 2:10:57 PM CDT
I might see Trek in a theater...I will never see Transformers 2.
by bones
Well, maybe if it is on cable. That was how I saw the craptacular Fantastic Four films and Daredevil.
Of course, I hated all those films and still wanted money back for seeing them, even though I didn't pay... -
what the fuck for? The TF2 footage sounds weak but that's to be expected. Spectacle can't make up for shit filmmaking on any level.
-
Kirk in Name Only!
-
I have complete faith JJ will deliver a very exciting movie that will be nothing like Star Trek. I intend to see it, and I expect to have a good time. And whether people want to accept it or not, he will be redefining what Star Trek means to a new generation of consumers.
-
So are Vulcans. This should be fun.
-
Transformers was the best movie of the summer that it came out. I was so sure that it was gonna be Spider-Man 3... and we all know how that turned out. Transformers delivered the goods though, so I'm excited for a second one with even more giant robot battles in it. As long as they significantly up-the-ante then it's gonna be good.
With Star Trek it remains to be seen. I love the trailer and I really, really want it to be good. But I'm worried, since it was made by a guy who has previously only made a bad television show. I don't want it to go all "Trek 90210" on us. -
Don't forget, he made a really bad action film too.
-
I just looked it up. Yeah, I forgot about Cloverfield. It was pretty mediocre. I hope for more from Trek.
-
I think he was talking about Mission Impossible 3. Abrams didn't direct Cloverfield...
-
sorry..
-
Even worse. Well, at least the Trek reviews are good... for whatever that's worth. Can't wait to see it.
