Are You Going To Sit There And Let Time Warner Cable Take FearNet Away From You??

Published at:  Apr 02, 2009 11:12:55 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Harry Knowles asked that this be passed along:

Hi Harry

My name’s Joe McCabe—I’m the associate editor of FEARnet.com. I’m also a longtime fan of Ain’t It Cool.

You might have heard that Time Warner and Brighthouse just dropped FEARnet On Demand from their cable networks. As a fellow genre film lover, I’m sure you’ll agree that – with Monsters HD going under – we need a decent horror channel on TV. And since we’re planning to unspool a lot of cool flicks on FEARnet in the days ahead – like the unedited ‘Midnight Meat Train’, ‘Phantasm’, ‘Army of Darkness’, and ‘Hostel II’ – we want the fans to be able to see them! Could you please let your users know that if they’d like to see FEARnet On Demand back on Time Warner, they should call 1-877-FEAR-247? We’ll connect them with our cable operator and they can let them know that they want FEARnet. (Please note that for some cable subscribers, FEARnet is available on AT&T U-Verse and Verizon Fios).

Here’s a link to our president’s blog, in which she discusses this situation.

Thank you very much for your consideration and support, Harry!

All the best,
Joe

NFL Network would be nice, but the reason most systems don't carry it is because of the DirecTV NFL Season Ticket monopoly. NFL Network is a lame little bone thrown your way by the NFL to keep you from realizing that you should be able to get the Season Ticket since most of the stadiums in the NFL are at least partially paid for by taxpayers. Oh, and I never got FearNet, but it does suck when a useful niche channel goes under, yet Oxygen keeps chugging along.

TimeWarner bragged about 10,000 movies on demand. 99% of them were crap and you had to pay for most of them. Fearnet's selections were no worse than the movies you had to pay for. They had friday the 13th, movie one and two... both free and better than the remake and the 11 dollar ticket. Getting rid of fearnet is just another reason TimeWarner sucks.

    by wungolioth

...but I could never understand why nobody ever thought to create a channel that would duplicate the Weekend Creature Double Feature experience from the seventies and eighties, that's what I've really been waiting for. Those old Godzilla movies and schlock monster movies have gotta be pretty cheap to get together, it would probably be very profitable.

Fearnet and Spike both have pros and cons. Fearnet has some bad movies and annoying popups, but is also the only free movie channel I watch On Demand (luckily I have comcast here in Illinois so I am safe, for now). While Spike has about 99% shitty shows and movies, but they also are rerunning the Shield now. Which rocks. Pros and cons people. Pros and cons.

Chiller and Fearnet sound intersting but I want a Creature Feature Channel with both the old horror films AND the sci-fi ones too. How come no one's done this? All those wonderfully campy films from the 40's to the 80's. And I want it in a format like WUNGOLIOTH is talking about. I want a dude dressed up like Dracula and popping out of a coffin to introduce the movies. I guarantee you on a Saturday and Sunday morning, little kids would eat that shit up. And yeah throw some MST3K in there like DAGGOR said. By the way, i worked at a soundstage where they film CINEMATIC TITANIC and I got to sit back and watch the boys do there thing for a whole week and yeah, i laughed my fucking ass off. All of them were awesome guys and I got them all to sign my MITCHELL dvd. How cool is that?

I Called The Day It Vanished

    by shadowvoyd

Time Warner was extremely apologetic, had no idea what FearNet was, seemed not to care after double checking it wasn't available anymore and asked if I'd like some more pay channels.

It took them TWO YEARS to finally get Starz On Demand and they've only just begun to offer Network channels on Demand (a pitiful selection for now) and then they do this. Time Warner: The Red Headed Stepchild of Cable Television.

There is no away I can fight off thousands of people. Maybe I could hold off hundreds of them if I had the right equipment, but there is no way I can fight an entire corporation. Sorry, Hercules, but I am afraid that we are just going to have to sit by and let Time-Warner Cable take away FearNet. by shadowvoyd

But still, it's one of the few genre specific outlets out there for horror fans. When you're in the mood for fun horror flick, even if you've seen it a dozen times before, it's there (and honestly, it's picking out a familiar favorite or seeing something you'd been putting off for a long time that makes the idea of it worthwhile). In short, it's not great, there's room for improvement, but it's a damn sight better than nothing. I'd rather have the option of knowing it's there when the odd horror movie mood strikes (which for me, is about every other day) than know I'll have to suck it up and hope that MAYBE one of the premium channels has something not completely made of fetid suck on.

Why on earth would anyone WANT to get into cable these days? More and more people are dropping cable every day to watch everything online through their pc's, appletv, roku boxes, Playstation 3's, XBox live, etc etc etc. You want to do something as a horror channel, do it all online. Strike a deal with Netflix, Hulu, XBox, etc.

Sure cable's still the mainstream but at the rate things are changing, that won't be the case in another couple years.

    by someonewhoknows

Not to attack you, but i am in "the business" (i know that is such a d- bag thing to say), but there is NO money to be made on the internet that would support a TV channel. Going through hulu or netfilx requires revenue sharing...which is fine, but 1 penny per view doesn't add up to the 30,000$ licensing fee of a movie(yes it is that much for "good" films).

Also, i am not a fearnet employee nor am i a time warner employee, but i do know a little about what is going on. Fearnet was offered completely free to time warner for a certain amount of time. That time expired and they needed to pay or drop, they dropped.

I also know, what other channels, like fearnet, charge the cable outlet is about 2-5 cents a month per customer. Two F'n cents

So to close, when cool channels are taken away from you over little to no cost to the cable company and you pay 50-100$ a month...be pissed off. You may not have ever watched fearnet, but any channel you dig can get taken away after the "trial" period and if you like it, odds are others do as well, so speak up.

    CHILLER is a waste!!!

    by film11

Anyone who feels that CHILLER is more desirable than FEARNet is out of their mind. I do have some serious ussues with FEARNet../the main one being their annoying video ads during a film which take up 25% of the picture! Even worse than what TNT does! THAT is reprehensible. Aside from that, it's the best option for horros fans out there. For one thing, they offer some films in HD! And a few even before they hit DVD. CHILLER offers none. I also prefer the wide range of movies instead of the lame, failed TV shows that fill up the majority of CHILLER. No commercials (except for a mid-break) is another plus for FEARNet. So is unedited movies! As well as original programming. Even though I don't watch it much, I always check the listings, hoping for more HD (and 5.1 audio). Losing FEARNet should (and would) be a big loss to horror fans. I'd hate to lose it (FIoS here) and hope that TWC customers who feel the same will try and do something about it! (And if any from FEARNet reads this, PLEASE dump the obtrusive ads during the movies!!)

    fearnet sucks

    by underneathcouchcushion

I don't have Time Warner, but fearnet has to expand their content. I am really tired of viewing a horror film that is shot with a camcorder(These movies look like they were shot in my backyard). Wouldn't it be awesome if they had the entire Romero zombie series, or 15 good slasher movies(April Fool's Day or the first My Bloody Valentine)? Also, they recycle the movies. Hey, here is an idea, when you retire a movie, at least give it a few months, don't say it ends Thursday, and when Thursday hits keep it up and have the text new beside it(This pisses me off, greatly).
