Published at:  Apr 01, 2009 5:07:52 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... We lost Ricardo Montalbahn relatively recently - and we never got to hold a memorial screening for all of us geeks that loved his films - and most importantly... KHAAAAAAN!!!!! Well, with STAR TREK coming up - we (us folks whats thinks ups this cool shit) decided it would be most excellent if we held a pristine awesome screening of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN - and if we had a wonderful sneak of some STAR TREK goodness what ain't ever been seen by the eyes of man... even those at ShoWest! That's right. Goodies, KHAN and your fellow Khan lovers - all on hand! Let's kick this event's ass! God I love this movie!!

Fantastic Fest and Ain’t It Cool News present
A free screening of STAR TREK 2: THE WRATH OF KHAN
With an exclusive sneak preview of 10 minutes of NEVER BEFORE SEEN footage from the new STAR TREK.
April 6, 9:50 PM
Alamo South Lamar, Austin, Texas

Consensus in fan circles is virtually unanimous. The best STAR TREK film to date is the second installment, THE WRATH OF KHAN. Whereas STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE’s bloated budget and plodding pacing flatlined with audiences, KHAN charged out of the gates with an epic revenge duel storyline between an aging and vulnerable Kirk and one of his lifelong enemies, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán).

J.J. Abrams comes to Star Trek in much the same way KHAN director Nicholas Meyer did in 1982. Both were not steeped in the legacy of the show before coming to their projects. They also both wanted to be respectful to the tradition, but needed to deliver a fresh reimagining of the franchise to make it relevant to young viewers again. In fact Abrams has named STAR TREK II as one of his main influences for the new film.

I say that KHAN is the best of the series... to date. Based on what I have seen thus far, however, I am holding out strong hope that KHAN, the undisputed champ of the STAR TREK movies, will be trumped by Abrams’ reboot.
Come find out for yourself on April 6th at 9:50 PM at the Alamo South Lamar when we screen a fully restored 35mm print of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and be the first to catch a glimpse of 10 minutes of exclusive NEVER BEFORE SEEN footage from the new film STAR TREK!
Fantastic Fest badge holders can RSVP at the Fantastic Fest Facebook Page, the remaining seats will be first come first serve.

J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK opens in theaters everywhere on May 8.

2008/9 has been the season of filmmakers DRIP-FEEDING bits of footage to the geeks. Come, on, guys. The ONLY question is: 'how good is the film?' Not: 'how good is a selection of 10 minutes of footage from the film?' I bet a judiciously chosen 10 minutes of Spider-Man 3 would make it look pretty good.

    by mr gorilla

I saw Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with my missus, and she had NO IDEA that Marion was going to be in it. Now like everyone, she loved Marion, so when she turned up in the film, my missus was TOTALLY won over. The sad thing is that NONE OF US on this site were able to experience the film like that, since we had been spoiled shitless. I mean: we all know there is a time travel element to Star Trek. But imagine going in NOT knowing that? Maybe it would be better.

    One Question

    by enderandrew

Why does everyone love Khan, and hate Nemesis, which is basically the same film? Khan at its heart is a story of a man who plotted for years revenge on the captain of the Enterprise and wants to deliver that revenge personally. The subplot is of Spock/Data dying, and leaving open a door for their return.

    Nemesis Hate

    by enderandrew

And for better or worse the fanbase turning on Nemesis is why they stopped doing movies with the Next Gen crew, and decided to reboot. This movie is a direct response to the fans. I for one didn't mind Generations, loved First Contact, liked Insurrection, and really liked Nemesis.

Because Khan is brilliantly written, edited and directed with a good story. Whereas Nemesis, well, isn't. Take a look at the scene where McCoy visits Kirk in his apartment in Khan. That scene is the heart of the movie. Where is the equivalent scene in Nemesis?

I think people dislike Nemesis because it was such a copy of Khan. I think people wanted to see an original story with the TNG cast and what they got was a timid production company that greenlit a film because it had so many elements of a previously successful film. It felt manipulative and derivative.

Saw it recently again whilst flipping channels... I think it's worse than ST:5 even.Every major character behaves ridiculously and we're forced to accept within the first few minutes of the film the shear stupidity of a government that has been overthrown and assassinated and manipulated throughout the millennia , and they're going to fall for someone carrying in something the size of a freaking bundt cake?

The ridiculousness of having such an awesome ship and not finding anything better to do with it than to harass your "parent"? I could go on for hours. The only Next Generation movie that has been any good was First Contact

    Next Gen Movies...

    by bones

The Next Generation films would have been great if they had an arc for the characters plotted out over about three or four of the movies, if they didn't keep shoe-horning in every character, and most of all if Brent Spiner didn't overact or sing in every film. Seriously. The Emotion Chip was the worst thing about Generations, so much so that they had him turn it off in First Contact, leave it behind in Insurrection and basically not even mention that he had it in Nemesis. Data played well over the series, but they pushed him so much to the front and center in the films that it was annoying and distracting.
If they had focused on some of the other characters, made each film feel like an event rather than just another episode and gave the films a sense of scale (Although Insurrection's Location work was very nice) they would be universally lauded.
Nemesis could have been a great film--if Tom Hardy slowly turned into Patrick Stewart during the film--and there was more interactions with the Romulans. If the final scene was Picard vs. Picard if might have been very interesting...

    Now...about Khan...

    by bones

I saw this on the big screen a few years ago--holds up incredibly well. The lighting and the production design give away the low-budget a little, but Low-budget has never been a problem for me. This is so epic and personal a story--and a style of storytelling that Star Trek was never able to capture again.
This film and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World makes for one helluva double feature!
Now...as to the ten minutes of footage from the new movie...
Ten Minutes here or Ten Minutes there still leaves 100 - 110 minutes of the new film unseen. Statistically, Star Trek Wars could still suck Donkey Kong balls and still seem like a great film.
I would love to be completely wrong.

I know many find ST The motion picture boring, but I'll always love it for it's wondrous take on ST. STII,STIII & STIV are all one continuous movie to me and I love all three of them. STV is about camping, kirk always being mean to spock and rehashing special effects. It's garbage! ST6 I like and redeems the franchise after the awful STV. ST7 reminds me of Christmas and for some strange reason I like it, even with all its faults. That's it really. I don't have any desire for the rest of the ST movies and yes I hated First Contact.

    by indyabbey jones

yes nemisis sucked, but so did final frontier and what did paramount do, they said ok we;ll make one more orginal castmovie, and make it a send offthats what they should have done with TNG, given us a fifth movie, around 2004 or 5 that closed the series off, and maybe even brought back Q so that the sries went full circleif paramount had gotten behind enterprise (it was getting so much better towards the end) they could have had that show run for 7 years and turned DS9 into a profitable film franchise not gonna argue that the reboot looks like it will be fun, but paramount hasmishandled the franchise since the late 90's and drove it into the gound in the early 2000's

I have always thought that seeing the first 10 minutes of a film was a stupid idea. I mean you get pulled into the film and then some prick turns off the projector and says, "How did you like that?"

Showing it serves no purpose other than to allow some fanboy to say that he saw the first 10 minutes of a movie. (Neener, Neener, Neeener)

And you cant judge a movie by looking at 10 minutes of it. Go back and watch the first 10 minutes of Speed Racer. It is quite well done. Unfortunately it all goes to shit after that.

    by exterminans

Hell I'd be shocked if his film turns out to be better than Star Trek 5. It might not be a good film (though it is a guilty pleasure) at least Star Trek 5 is entertaining and it has a few nice character moments. I know I enjoyed it more than Mission Impossible 3 (of course that isn't saying much). I'm not rooting against Abrams. I hope he nails it but everything I've seen thus far says just the opposite.

    by anakin whoopass

Nemesis has two perfect moments, and they're both Jerry Goldsmith-scored Enterprise flybys. Star Trek V has zero perfect moments but it seems more spontaneous, like Shatner used everybody's first take, so it feels more like the original TV series than any other film.

    Khan

    by attackpatterndelta

Was clearly the best, and I also liked ST III and IV, along with First contact. Here's another thing that bothers me. I really enjoyed the score for Khan and how the music helped build the tension. Also liked how when you watched a big special effects or action shot, it felt BIG, like movie big. The Enterprise's final approach to Starbase 1 in Search for Spock, the stealing of the Enterprise from the same Starbase. The Enterprise sneaking up behind the Reliant felt like "oh shit" when you watched it. Too many shots in modern movies just lay it out there with no real build up. It's kind of like "here's that shot you've all been waiting for" and it's like...you don't even fucking care because it's not made a big deal! I am STILL trying to figure out why Shinzon was so mad at Picard. Picard didn't even know Shinzon existed and this dude was pissed off at him. Picard should've kept saying to him through out the movie, "And who the fuck are you again?" "I'm your clone and how could you not even know me when I've been obsessing over you all of my cloney life!!!" ***sobbing*** First Contact was pretty good, can't really complain about that.

    Nemesis works best...

    by bones

...when viewed as the Story of the Next Gen battling against an insane Fan.
    No Kidding.
If you look at it as the story of a group of actors in a battle to the death against a psychotic Trekker who thinks he is a clone of Patrick Stewart and wants to sleep with Marina Sirtis. And after he gets pummeled into a coma, this is the fantasy that happens...
Try it! Works best when drunk.

Just what EXACTLY did you like about Nemesis? I saw it once at the cinema and almost cried at how trashy it was. I saw it on DVD and flicked thru ALL the scenes that didn't have the enterprise in shot sat down with a friend recently, smoked a bowl and watched it.... we turned it off! seriously, Insurrection actually became a better film after Nemesis was released. whats really interesting is we all read the script before it came out and even then we knew it was shit. by scriptgirl_nipples

In the reboot parallel universe Enterprise, the annoying twat Scotty as played by the annoying twat Simon Pegg, fucks Sulu against the warp core. The engine's canny take it Captain, and the Enterprise ends up in the reboot parallel 'mirror' universe where all shit breaks loose.

The two Enterprise's then have to fight the Cloverfield monster, and then that travels into a parallel universe where it meets up with the Cloverfield monster that attacked NY then they both end up fighting the Enterprise's. To top it all off, big fucking robots show up farting and pissing and fuck them all up.

The new ST is what it is. It is not, however, and never could be on a par with any of the films featuring the original cast because it does not feature the original cast. Replacing King Shatner with an A&F model pretty boy is, as I see it, a major weakness from which it cannot recover. They have got Spock right, though. More or less.

    by star hump

I haven't seen it since. I was smoking a lot of pot back then. I can't recall a single frame of the movie and by the descriptions here, it sounds like the worst Trek film yet. Ever think you liked a film because you wanted it to be good? I guess I was desperate for a good Trek movie, and after seeing this great cast appear in so many stinkers (excepting Contact), I just couldn't accept the fact that TNG completely shit the bed as a theater franchise. What a waste, and I was in total denial. And guess what? Here comes another Star Trek clusterfuck. The shits just keep coming. Why is it so difficult to make a great Star Trek film? Or a series for that matter?

    by lockesbrokenleg

It was. The plot was so bland - why was Shinzon so pissed of at humans? Why didn't he attack Romulans for creating him. Sure, he killed the senate, but that was about it. Oh, and Jerry Goldsmith's overused Trek music really got on my nerves.

enderandrew>> Nemesis the SAME film? Give me a break.

    by darthcorleone

    Nemesis sucked. Unequivocally and absolutely.
    1) Khan had a history in the Star Trek universe. The lame Picard clone-villain had no history and no resonance. And he certainly had none of the brilliant character moments of Ricardo's Khan.2)The sacrifice of Data and Spock is not the same. I realize Data is beloved, so I won't just dismissively call him a mere android, but that element does exist in my mind. Additionally, they essentially have the entirety of Star Trek III in the last five minutes of Nemesis with the lame Data replacement. Where's the time to be sad between movies over the death of a beloved character? Where's the spiritual retrieval of the saving of the one-of-a-kind Spock? If it's as easy as getting a new make and model of Data, why the hell should I care about his sacrifice in the first place?3) I'll leave out the fact that the old Trek characters are simply stronger characters, as that falls into the retread of the old vs. new argument, but I will say that - as someone mentioned above - Wrath Of Khan is loaded with far more characterization and is simply better written. It does make you care.4) Finally, just for the sake of argument, let's say they are the same movie. Why the hell would I give Star Trek slack for wasting one of its feature film events on the same movie twice? Couldn't they come up with something more original?

Theater audiences will laugh at these two lines...

    by screamingpenis

...(1)Damn it, Jim; what the hell is the matter with you?! Other people have birthdays; why are we treating yours like a funeral? (2) Khannnnnnnnnnnn. They did when I saw it couple of years ago. But altogether the film holds up incredibly well. The special effects done with ILM models, instead of the standard wall-of-CGI in today's films, leave the eyes feeling much better also.

ripof of wok. However it has the most spectacular space battle in the film series imho (three ships against one, the entrprse rammig another ship, an attack by a boarding party). Wich isnt saying much as if you look at the entire film series objectively, none of the space battles are all that great. And yes that includes wok. Its tense becos of the drama and great story going on, but theres no spectacle to it.

    Nemesis sucked and sucked hard

    by kid z

It could have been passable but for the incredibly lame-ass villain. The Spider-Man comics of the early 90's taught us that it's never a good sign when clones are involved in any plot. Also the actor playing Picard's evil clone was terrible. His apparent idea to portray his role with a fey, slightly malevolent impersonation of Picard made him come off more as a particularly nasty gay maitre d' instead of an Earth-threatening villain. Also bad was all the Reman henchmen. Did an old copy of Nosferatu land on Remus and influence their culture a la the gangster planet in "A Piece of the Action" so that everyone wore bad Count Orlock masks? Lame.

    re: Nemesis

    by roguescribner

NEMESIS might have been good if it a) wasn't such a ripoff of WRATH OF KAHN and b) didn't insult the audience's intelligence. Why exactly did Data not give Picard the Emergency Transport Unit before he beamed to the enemy ship? Especially with La Forge saying it would be a one way trip? Oh yeah, because if he did that then Data couldn't later sacrifice himself to save Picard. LAME. Spock's sacrifice was heartfelt and necessary. Data's was LAME and STUPID. The B-9 shit just added salt to an already gaping wound of lameness.

Maybe if NEMESIS didn't try so hard to be just like TWOK, it could have been a proper send off for TNG crew.

"Ahhhhhhhhh! This movie is amazing! "
"STAR TREK is GREAT in a way that scifi movies haven't been for a long time. They really got it right."

Very happy with Star Trek. And everything.

Tim League duped us again tonight. He sold us on seeing 10 minutes of the new Star Trek with J.J. Abrams’s writers in person, before a classic screening of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Khan started, and the print looked/sounded awful, and scant seconds past the credits the film started glitching, froze, and melted in classic AICN/Drafthouse Teen Wolf 2 style. Tim ran onstage and asked the writers to stall while he ran to the projection booth. At this point most of knew what was up and were unspeakably manic. The writers were interrupted by !Leonard F’ing Nimoy! who was holding a FedEx canister used for film delivery. Applause, Standing Ovation for the legend, blah, blah, blah…then we got to see the world premiere of Star Trek (scant hours before the advertised premiere in Australia.)

I’m not the type to do spoilers, and if you’re still reading this then you’re the type to see the movie regardless of my review but I’ll tell you that I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

At one point in his life Abrams showed he knew how to start a show. The first few seasons of Alias had weekly opening scenes that compelled you to put down the remote. Between there and Cloverfield (which I didn’t care for at all) he started cheating the intro with the “flash forward” crutch. Abrams is walking without his crutch again…actually he’s doing hurdles as he bangs this movie’s intro two times — hit me!

The cast is superb, the story is compelling, the action is exciting, and Abrams even avoids any blatant cheesy “winks” about his reboot. If Star Trek is the bluebird of the summer movie season, then we are in for a great ride.

    p.s. red shirt

p.p.s. Someone tell me if the ice planet aliens were ripped straight from the video game Lost Planet.

    3 words.. OMG!!!

super accessible, in the right ways

A full Twitch review will appear in the near future but it is safe to say that J.J. Abram’s film is a very entertaining and reverential take on the Star Trek mythos. The acting and casting are spot on. The story mixes old and new elements of the Star Trek universe. The effects are breathtaking. Some people will inevitably nitpick this film but J.J. Abram’s new work is as good as (and arguably better) than most of the Star Trek movies that preceded it.

As usual, the haters are WRONG WRONG WRONG.

My take (slight spoilers) on JJ Trek

    by kraken

I'm an old school Trek fan. I was cynical when I saw the trailers for this remix, but this movie really won me over tonight. The pros : The new cast, story, visuals (very "used world" and practical look), and no cop outs. Cons: A few "fan dialog" moments that feel a little forced and awkward (very few though and forgivable) The engine room of the Enterprise looks like a glue factory from 1982 while the rest of the ship looks very sleek (yes, I realize it's an engine room and should look rough, but it felt like it wasn't even on board the Enterprise when we see it), the characters kept "lucking" into their old positions on the Enterprise over and over. But the majority of the film really works perfectly. So much fun for Trek fans and non Trek fans alike. My wife started crying when Nimoy came out as a surprise to intro the film. She didn't grow up a film geek like me, but she did grow up loving the Trek movies and Nimoy as Spock was, as always, note perfect. It was a great night. Thank you to Paramount, Harry and the Alamo for an amazing screening. This one will go down in the geek history books. The writers mentioned they were working on the script for Star Trek 2 right now... let's hope one of the crew members of the Enterprise doesn't briefly toy with the idea of growing a goatee. :)

Harry...This movie will never trump Khan or STIV

    by supermans

You gotta admit that if these characters had a tv show that ran for four to five years, then made a movie that it could possibly at that point trump Khan.. However none of us have seen these actors before other than Sylar and perhaps Kirk in that horrible movie The Princess Diaries 2... (don't ask why I saw that) What made Star Trek II and IV the best in the series were simply because of the great relationships we have had with the characters over many many years of loving and watching re-runs of the beloved TV show. A first film cannot capture that love and excitement we all got watching the Star Trek II, III and IV trilogy's ever... Star Trek V we can forget and ST VI was a good send-off.. However this re-imaging even though it may be an awesome movie will only trump Khan in the minds and eyes of people who did not grow up with Star Trek.. Which is the point for the re-boot since most kids nowadays would never spend five minutes watching the original Star Trek's dated look..

At least what I hope comes of this movie is it gets kids interested in watching the old Kirk series and then watch Star Trek II, III and IV back to back in a cinema experience..
