L.A. Readers!!! Join Beaks And Moriarty For ISHTAR And JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO April 1st & 2nd At The New Beverly!!!

Beaks here...

I know I promised a longer write-up on ISHTAR - and it's coming! Just not right now, and probably not before AICN and HitFix get down to the business of feting two of the most unjustly maligned movies in recent memory today and tomorrow (April 1st and 2nd) at The New Beverly!

But I shouldn't have to dazzle you with an in-depth deconstruction of Elaine May's ISHTAR - which works rather brilliantly as both a silly Hope & Crosby road picture and a pointed political satire - to get you down to the best repertory house in Los Angeles to see these two should-be classics back-to-back. When are you going to get a chance to see a double-feature of ISHTAR and JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO again? No one screens these movies in the first place, let alone programs them together. They're notorious failures. Career killers. John Patrick Shanley just returned to filmmaking after an eighteen year layoff; May, on the other hand, hasn't directed a film since.

While I can't wait to watch these movies with devoted fans, I hope we'll complement the converts with a healthy portion of first-timers. What's nice is that these movies are surprising in different ways: ISHTAR is stunning in that it starts off so strong, you're stunned that anyone could call it "humorless"; JOE is much more measured and, well, cloudy.

Drew and I will introduce both films, and we'll be giving out a few prizes. For more on JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO, Drew just wrote the film up as part of his "Must-See" project at HitFix. And if you want to read a great little piece on ISHTAR, check out Kim Morgan's appreciation from last Monday (which was also Beatty's seventy-second birthday!).

I hope to see you at 7:30 PM for ISHTAR, and again at 9:40 PM for JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO!

    Ishtar needs a DVD RELEASE!!!!

    by behemoth

I loved this movie. The first half of it is some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. The songs, the incredibly bizarre casting, Hoffman's babbling in the desert where he's trying to pretend he knows how to speak Farci...
When it moves to a more "action" piece, it starts to flounder, but the comedic elements are, and always have been, absolute gold.

Beaks is spreading lies. Read the facts here

Joe Vs The Volcano was not a career killer. The reason John Patrick Shanley quit was because he was losing his eyesight. The man practically went blind before he was able to see again.

And as for Ishtar, the movie is prety good and underrated and May has continued her writing career and I hope she returns to filmmaking soon!

    Ishtar on Netflix

Is on View Instantly on Netflix

Finally getting some appreciation. Not the greatest movie ever (especially given the pedigree of those involved) but hardly the worst movie ever, either.

Joe vs. the Volcano is pretty good.

    by hst666

It is an odd film that does not have a lot of laugh out loud moments, but I enjoyed it when I watched it.

...sit through those too film duds again. I think movies like these fall into their own special category where they failed so spectacularly and were so ridiculed over the years that people simply started feeling bad for them and now say nice things about them strictly out of pity.

Ishtar was killed before it entered theaters

    by hst666

I have not seen it, but from what I remember, this was a movie like Waterworld where the industry decided it would be a dud before ever releasing it. I don't know anyone who has seen it that thinks it sucks.

Except that Waterworld does indeed suck.

Mad Max on the water? And the villain that threatens our Aquaman, Lord of the Midwestern Drawl is....Dennis Hopper???If you're somehow NOT turned off, then your sense of taste is so bad that you probably DID enjoy that film when it was released. Heck, this film and Transformers probably reside within the centerpiece of your film collection...
