Andy Hallett 1975-2009

Published at:  Mar 31, 2009 1:55:52 PM CDT

I am – Hercules.

E! Online is reporting that Andy Hallett, who made a big impression playing demonic warbler Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan during the latter four seasons of “Angel,” died Sunday night at the age of 33.

“Angel” represented pretty much the Massachusetts native’s entire TV career, and he was a major component of that franchise from the second season on. His final scene with banished lawyer Lindsey McDonald in the last episode of the series was one of my favorite things on TV ever.

So it's a sad day.

Find all of E!’s story on the matter here.

Another talent taken away way too early.

Every time I think about Andy Hallett as Lorne it just brings a smile to my face. Fantastic character and wow, did the guy have some pipes on him.

Big condelences to his family, friends, and of course his fans.

    Herc! On another note

    by nietzschebot

Although I greatly appreciate your contributions here, the series "Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles" is offering a lot of coolness which is not being appreciated. It is currently better than Heroes and 24 combined and yet gets no mention. Why is this? The main film thread is not discriminatory but the coaxial one seems to be fixated on just a few entries with no mention of other developments or series. Why is this? I wouldn't write this if Terminator weren't in danger of being canceled because of the obvious difficulty the public has of following complicated plotlines (see Deadwood), but the fact remains that it is in danger and needs coolness support from sites such as this one. Hate away!

Andy was a guest at the local Comic Book convention a few years ago--and did his usually great job of hosting parties and holding court during and after the show.
He was spectacularly nice, a terrific showman and fantastic to all his fans.
My heart goes out to his family, friends and loved ones...and to his fans all over the world.
    He will definitely be missed.

I seem to remember he was unwell after Angel finished. Was this something to do with that? Poor guy.

The only time I saw him on TV without make-up was when he was promoting an Angel box-set on UK Channel Five's Christian O'Connell Show, with Christian Kane by his side. Andy was absolutely hammered (there was a bar on set), and was so funny. And yeah, his final scene with Lindsey was perfect, and he played the hell out of it. RIP.

While I wasn't as big a fan of Angel as I was of Buffy, I was always consistently entertained by Andy Hallett as Lorne. He was easily one of the most enjoyable characters on that show, and it's very sad to hear that a man who always seemed to be having a good deal of fun has died at such a young age.My condolences to his family.

    Possibly a dental infection originally.

    by shan

I heard he got an infected filling towards the end of filming the last season of Angel, which wasn't treated for some time. That is a classic cause of infection getting into the blood stream and reaching the heart - which can lead to bacterial endocarditis (infected heart muscle).

We're all still speculating but that could have led to the damage in his heart that ultimately caused this.

My favorite lorne moment that will always crack me up no matter how many times I see it is the ballay episode where he is stuck babysitting connor and ashe sings him a lulaby he works in sarcasitcally how he resents not being invited to the ballay. The delievery and tone makes me laugh everytime. Good bye lorne. I hope he is drinking a seabrezze in heaven served by ramon

    From interview re tooth infection

    by jack black

The end of Angel coincided with another disturbing situation for Andy. Around the time of filming "A Hole in the World," he says, "I remember a filling coming out of a cavity in my mouth. It didn't hurt and I didn't get it fixed immediately, and eventually, it got infected. But it wasn't inflamed, so I never knew that I had a problem - until the day I was in the hospital."

About a month after Angel wrapped, Angel make-up artist Dayne Johnson dropped by to visit, realised his friend wasn't well and wound up taking Andy to the doctor, who sent Andy to the emergency room. The tooth infection, Andy explains, "[had] a direct line to the heart, which was causing the heart to not pump as efficiently, so my heart was getting more and more enlarged. When I finally went in, I was in the middle of congestive heart failure and it was leaking blood from all the valves. The whole thing would be described as advanced cardiomyopathy. But I'm better now - I'm so thankful."

I completely agree about the scene in the finale (one of the best finales, ever). My other favorite scene was when Wesley was kidnapping baby Connor - he sang a couple bars of a lullaby to try to calm him down, which clued Lorne in on the whole thing, leading Wesley to attack him. Very, very sad news. I didn't know he was that young.

he took some getting used to, as well as the karaoke bar et al, but it was probably Joss Whedon's most inventive and original idea ever. And Andy played him to perfection. R.I.P.

It's not Andy Hallett's fault Paul Harvey didn't get a TB, although why a newscaster is more relevant to a sci-fi/genre website than a beloved character on a phenomenal genre show is beyond me. Totally worth shitting on a good person's death to get your point across, isn't it?

It is a true tragic to know Andy Hallett has passed away at the age of 33. I loved the character of Lorne. He brought needed humor and music to a show that could be very dark. According to what I have read this was his only major acting role. It was a great one though and his family should be proud.

    by badboybrom hc

I attended a 3 day fan convention in Blackpool with pretty much the entire Angel Cast, Andy was amazing. When most of them shot off in the evening he and one or two others would party with us and he'd sing kareoke for us pretty much all night long. The guy was class, pure entertainment. He even wore his make up and wouldn't take it off untill everyone who wanted a pic had had one. True legend. RIP Andy you Genius

    A DAMN SHAME

    by mullah omar

Dead at 33 from heart disease. That is crazy.

It is some irony that I always thought of Hallett as being the "heart" of the team on ANGEL. His portrayal of Lorne was full of decency, empathy, and all the best that humanity had to offer - also ironic because he was a demon. After 4 seasons of this, it made his final scene in the show all the more of a punch to the gut.

Like I wrote, a damn shame.

    by snake foreskin

I mean, the dude did play quite the alcoholic and he seemed pretty depressed underneath all that makeup. He was probably pretty upset that his career went nowhere after Angel. Joss Whedon gave him the job because they were friends from way back.
I never really cared for the character of Lorn, he always annoyed me.And that Lady Marmalade scene was one of the worst things ever on TV.
But Jeesh, Andy Hallett seemed to be a really nice guy. This is quite a shock. I am sure his friends and family are stricken with grief. Very sad. R.I.P. Mr. Hallett.

Their showing in the UK of Angel series 5 has been butchered - heavily edited eps and 2 totally removed so far - and both important to the plot (werewolf girl and the prophecy).
Why show it at 7pm you moronic fuckwits?

So, dvds are getting dug out.
    Best tribute to Andy eps?
For me - the series 2 finale, series 5 finale, series 5 halloween ep, series 4 ep 2 and the ep where he reads evil Cordy and freaks when he sees the coming of The Beast.

I will agree on an earlier post - he did butcher Lady Marmalade that time.

Took me a while to find this talkback. Anyway I had been staying away from the 1st season of Angel because it was a little depressing knowing that one of the stars in the first part of the season was gone, now it looks like it's going to be bittersweet watching latter seasons too. The only thing I didn't like about Andy Hallett's character Lorne was that he couldn't change into human form; I know its part of his race but I appreciated his character and wanted Andy the performer to get wider notice and that wouldn't happen covered in contacts and green skin. Gone at 33, man. Now when I drink that Rolling Rock with the 33 on the label on Friday I'll be thinking of you, Andy, God bless your soul.
