UPDATED!! Learn Who's Coming Back For Season Four Of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!! Plus Learn The All-Star Cast Of Katims' PARENTHOOD!!
I am – Hercules!!
DirecTV and NBC Universal have reached an agreement to keep the acclaimed football drama “Friday Night Lights” on for two more 13-episode seasons.
Now TV Guide has an interview with showrunner Jason Katims, who says he'll remain with "Lights" even if his NBC dramedy pilot, "Parenthood" (based on the old Steve Martin movie) goes to series.
He also reveals which characters return for the fourth season:
TV GUIDE: Based on how the season ended, who can you say will definitely be back?
KATIMS: The Taylor family (Chandler, Teegarden and Connie Britton as Tami)…Jesse Plemons’ character, Landry, is a senior, so he’ll be back, and I want to make sure everybody comes back in some way, whether or not they’ll be there for every episode. We set a nice precedent with that last year in our story arcs with Gaius Charles (Smash) and Scott Porter (Jason). Even though they weren’t there for the whole season, they definitely left their mark on Season Three in a big way. If we feel we can’t service all the characters for the whole season, we’ll want to find meaty arcs for them to play.
Katims also discloses that the "Parenthood" pilot will star Peter Krause ("Six Feet Under," "Dirty Sexy Money"), Maura Tierney ("NewsRadio," "ER"), Craig T. Nelson ("Poltergeist," "Coach") and Erika Christensen ("Swimfan," "Six Degrees").
Find all of TV Guide's story on these matters here.

im not into American football. Is it any good?
-
neither did i. But its there bro's. it's there!
-
at least on facebook you can fucking edit ah deaf ears.
-
for all of us who didn't watch on direct TV you just spoiled the season finale. thanks jerk. thanks alot. Great news though.
-
bollocks. he was fabulous as lorne.
-
Great news.
-
Even though football is a big part of it, it's really about the people who live in a town obsessed with football. Not everyone loves it. Plus, literally every character (with the exception of Buddy Garrity) is fucking hot. Even the guys. Yeah, I said it. But Tyra practically exudes sex. And the coach's daughter is a nice piece of jailbait.
-
Herc! The lack of FNL coverage is bad enough - but when you do put something up, no spoilers! Please!
-
Son of a bitch. Yeah, Hallett was great as Lorne.
As for FNL... yes you should take a look. It it one of the few examples of a feature film to TV transition that actually works. My GF HATES American football, but loves the series because it is less about football and more about life in small town America... without being condescending. It is also a teen drama without the usual cliches and hangups that plague 90210 and its ilk.
Even if it ends up not being your thing, I think you would agree that it is well made.
-
Glad to hear they're bringing it back.
-
Good news for a great show!
-
"Friday Night Lights" truly is unwatchable. I cannot understand why anyone would want to watch this show. Renew "Kings" too, NBC.
-
this is gonna be outstanding!!! a tonne of new charactors at the new school etc.. very cool
-
Fuck that GREAT TV. Best show last few years
-
NBC kicks ass for this thank god this show wasn't on fox
-
What I meant to say was that when the season ended on Direct TV I was left with the feeling that they picked such an intriguing plot twist but that it was a shame that we would never see the resolution. I figured the Direct TV setup would take enough NBC viewers away so that there was no chance that it would return. Friday night is TV wasteland anyways so maybe NBC realizes they won't do any better with something else. However it happened it's the best TV related news I've seen in awhile.
-
This and 30 Rock are mysteries to me. Who watches these shows?
-
Best news of the early week thus far. NBC has done the right thing giving this show more life, and even if it's 13 episodes a year for two years it's better than nothing. Best pick up of the year thus far after the horrible cancelings of the years past.
-
Wont most of the young actors going to have to "leave for college", and they replace most of the cast soon?
-
You mean there's hope for a Supernatural TB someday? Please?
-
NBC doesn't have a whole lot going for them. Friday Night Lights is a great show in a shotty timeslit.
-
That should have been shitty timeslot. Dyslexic keyboard.
-
Since she's going to be in the new CW series "The Body Politic".
-
so good to hear this. especailly where the last season left off.....can't wait
-
Friday Night Lights is probably in the top five greatest TV hourlongs of all time. Although the second season was pretty weak (especially at the beginning), the first season, and the current third season, are near-flawless in their scripting, delivery, acting, and execution. Just an amazing show.
-
FNL is my favorite series, but really, it is designed for a limited run. Now we will get desperate story lines like Buddy in a love traingle with Janine Turner and Kim Dickens and Tami finding the inevitable lump in her breast. Go out on top.
-
I care about the characters on this show more than any other show on TV right now, which almost makes its my favorite. Its really great stuff.
-
"Buddy in a love traingle with Janine Turner and Kim Dickens..."
I just threw up in my mouth a bit... that is a mental image I didn't need. lol. -
Truly shitty news to end the night...
-
Just curious, what series do you put on your top 5 must see TV?
-
I'd be curious to know what series do you put on your top 5 must see TV as well.
-
does it make you feel cool? Ahh I know boo hoo a show that resemble reality and actually features human experiences and not space travel or made up worlds and such SHOCK!! how dare people like FNL if you don't omg all these people how dare they. I guess people are pissed cause their shitty sci fi shows never got these type of renewal....I'm sorry for that geeks but don't shit on other peoples fav cause your are memories and nothing more.
-
sho nuff.
-
Apparently they're not going to be in these new seasons full time, they'll be getting send-off arcs like Smash did. I think my interest in the show will be a lot less once they're gone...
-
Constantly mentions Austin, and they named a fucking character after him, a guy in a wheelchair no less. And no, it isn't coincidental, because they threw in a very awkward line once out of nowhere that was "It's Herc's fault", long time AICN coaxial victims, erm I mean readers, will well remember when that was an AICN catchphrase...
-
about "it's Herc's fault" but now that it's mentioned I remember itthis is one of those shows that i keep meaning to start watching and just never have, i really need to
-
and if it means there's one less hour of Biggest Loser, Deal or No Deal, the Apprentice, or Howie Do It on NBC, that can't be a bad thing.
-
Apparently good TV must be a mystery to you as well. Go back to watching Dancing With The Stars and The Bachelor. You are EVERYTHING that's wrong with television.
-
Suddenly now I want to see that show that I've never heard of, even if it is on CW. Actually, if you can count on CW to do one thing, it's to display hot cast members to their advantage. What about Palicki where is she going? I mean what show? I know she's going to college.
-
It's not really about football. I mean it is about football, but in the way that Frasier was about psychology or I'll Fly Away was about law.
-
PERIOD!
-
Yes, I watch too much television and it has indeed rotted my brain. BEST CURRENT SHOWS:
01. Friday Night Lights 02. Mad Men 03. Lost (it's back!) 04. Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles 05. Kings (so far) BEST ALL-TIME SHOWS: 01. Friday Night Lights 02. The Wonder Years 03. Quantum Leap 04. Freaks And Geeks 05. Lost BEST (ONLY GOOD ONE'S) TALK/VARIITY SHOWS: Kimmy Kimmel Live & The Chris Isaac Hour (occasionally Charlie Rose) -
Freaks & Geeks, Space: Above And Beyond, Now And Again, Firefly, Over There, Heist, The Loop, Smith, The Ben Stiller Show, The Danna Carvey Show, Raines, Push Navada, My Own Worst Enemy, Fortune Hunter REST IN PEACE MY FRIENDS, YOU WERE NEVER GIVEN A FAIR SHAKE. Happily FNL will not be sharing your fate.
-
Lost, BSG and 24 are my favorite shows. I have never seen Dancing With the Stars. I watch Ghost Hunters, though.
-
They set up Season 4 PERFECTLY. I can't wait.
-
They even mentioned Patton Oswalt trying to convince his audience to watch it. It's some good shit.
-
I don't really mind that Tyra and Lyla are leaving as long as they give them proper send-offs. It only makes sense that some characters will be leaving and going off to college. I just hope that the show ends w/ Lyla & Riggins and especially Tyra & Landry still together somehow. I'll still happily watch a show about the Taylors, Saracen, Riggins and Landry w/ occasional visits from the others. All great characters.
-
I’d pimp it more if Katims would simply acknowledge what we all know to be truth: that the FNL version of Herc was named for me.
-
word
-
19 stories over three years and 50 episodes? Hmm.
-
but fair play, you have given it more exposure than I thought you had...
-
i will never understand the idiots who show up in talkbacks for shows they don't watch for the sole reason of saying (they'd like you to 'asking' but no-) saying 'who watches this show anyways?' To those condescending assholes-- if you say 'who watches this show' just answer it by telling yourself 'not me' and save yourself the trouble of posting at all. These types of talkbackers are pathetic... howabout before you run your mouth, look at the talkback-- the love it/don't love it ratio is THROUGH THE ROOF in favor of 'love it.'
-
I also can not abide talbakers who try and justify some cute little glib slice of snideness by ending their sentence with "Just sayin'". As if that makes their nonsense any more tolerable. Self congradualatory jerks, you can always spot 'em, they carry their chips on their sholders as if they were crowns and hold their treasured biases close to their bossom as if were their fist love. It's sad, these pathetic little empty people, I hope no one shows up trolling on this talkback with any of that garbage because FNL is definitly not for them anyhow, they haven't the humanity to appreciate it. For as we both know my friend "clear eyes and full hearts can't lose". Just sayin'. (I kid, I kid.)
-
very poetic. well done.
-
So, so glad this show's coming back. It's kind of a quiet show, and I wish more people had the patience for that because the drama and even the humor are just so fantastic, especially once you get to know the characters.
I love that the Coach is a good but cranky man, and that Tami talks like a real person, and that Riggins is a dumbass, and that Saracen is so awkward, and that Tyra is more than just the skank with a heart of gold, and that Julie is a little bit of a brat because she's supposed to be, and that Lyla is a princess without being a bitch. And I love Landry also.
I already miss Smash and Jason. I really hope Scott Porter ends up in a comic book movie someday. That's what I want to see.
Also, I agree with wixmmm and Genteel. God, I hate those type of guys. Internet's stuffed with them. -
if you don't like/"get" FNL, you are probably kind of an idiot - at least a cultural idiot.
Freaks & Geeks and Arrested Development are the other two shows to which this theory applies. -
We were like the only people who watched that, I guess. Philip Baker Hall in a sitcom - how can you go wrong?
-
Sure, the show will lose something with them gone but they can and should be replaced with new hot female characters with new story arcs. That's what happens in a real high school. Let the casting director and writing staff figure it out.
Just one request though: Can we get just one scene with Tyra working a stripper pole?
