Two Weeks!! Thursday Brings The Last OFFICE Until April 9!!

Published at:  Mar 26, 2009 4:38:16 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

This week:
“Two Weeks”
Written by Aaron Shure.
Michael’s (Steve Carell) relationship with the new vice president (guest star Idris Elba) becomes increasingly tense, as Michael finds an excuse to goof off even more than usual. Meanwhile, Pam (Jenna Fischer) faces the challenge of a new copier and Kelly (Mindy Kaling) develops a crush.

"The Office" is pre-empted next week by the final episode of "ER." The sitcom returns, as it happens, in two weeks with two new episodes that will surround the series premiere of the Amy Poehler “Office” not-spinoff “Parks and Recreation.”

* Pam will quit to help Michael launch his new paper company. Don’t expect either to rejoin Dunder Mifflin anytime soon.

* New boss Charles Miner will apparently continue to not get along with Jim.

* EW’s Mike Ausiello says Ryan Howard “pulled a Margene” while he was away. It’s a “Big Love” reference, but what it means I cannot say.

* Holly Flax will be back for the season finale.

Scenes deleted from last week’s “New Boss”:

    "Non-Spinoff" Controversy

    by arloflores

Why not call it a "non-spinoff?" That's exactly what it is. First it was going to be a spin-off, then they turned it into a tool to launch Amy Poehler's lame comedy shtick. After seeing the promo's for it, it's very clear that it still is an "Office" rip-off. Soooo, was a spin-off, but we're told it's not a spin-off, but it's clearly a spin-off, it's a non-spinoff. Wow, my head hurts.

Charles Miner making Jim look stupid

    by therocklobst3r

It's kinda insulting when the writing staff made had Charles make the comment to Jim, upon hearing that Jim was the "Number 2"/"Assistant Regional Manager"...to act like that position doesn't exist? What about the episodes in season three leading up to Jim's "homecoming"? When Jim and his boss from Stamford went to the MANAGER's CONFERENCE and saw Michael and Dwight? Or when Jan herself said that Jim was Michael's "Number 2"/"Assistant Regional Manager" because he worked with both branches? Or when Jim said that the title came with a pay-raise, implying that he was a step above his co-workers?

Charles is a hardass with a steel girder up his butt. He doesn't like Jim and didn't want to listen to Jim explain his #2 position. Jim got intimidated and made a retreat instead of proving to Charles his position is real.

Got caught up and am finally able to watch this season. I have enjoyed the show from the previous seasons but this season seems to be so down. The characters act more bitter and the humor seems forced. I am not giving up on it. It still is better than some of the dreck on today.

    Cringe worthy

    by kessler

Last week's episode was definately cringe worthy. I like the episodes best that have the characters in situations that are as close to a train wreck as possible. That was the charm of the British version. When the show gets into slap-shtick comedy, it basically not any differnt than other comedies.

    by big jim

But, seeing as how the same people are behind it it isn't a Rip-Off either. I think it is more of a re-imagining, a "What if" The Office wasn't set in a corporate office but rather in a gov't one.

    by dr. ironfist

I agree with you. I had that same reaction after watching the scene with Jim and the new Boss dude. I understand that the new Boss just didn't like Jim, but I took that scene as harkening back to the days when Dwight's position was made up. Like in the original Office where Gareth was team leader and it was basically a "fake" position, more or less.
It's like the writers ignored the whole 2 or 3 or so many odd seasons when Jim's #2 position was real and even Jan recognized it, and who's the big boss, the white dude with glasses? 'Cause even that guy seemed to recognize it. Of course, it's hard to argue all of this when Jim looks like a douche in a tux.
So, the question remains: Office retcon or douche in a tux? If big boss with glasses recognized Jim's position/stature, then new dude doesn't have the authority to...OK, I'm even boring myself now. Still, funny ass episode. Wait, this show's still on?

    by yomomma

Sadly, this probably my favorite show still on the air, but I'm getting sick of Steve Carrel's schtick. Time to shake things up, have a season following his off-site exploits (kinda like Jim at the other branch)and have him return as the boss in a season. That would freshen the show up a bit. I just want to repeat that I love the British habit of having limited runs of 2-3 seasons on shows. Just because a show is funny, doesn't mean it should be kept on the air until all the entertainment has been strangled out of it (not that we are even close to that with the office, but ending it this season and starting a new show would avoid jumping the shark and ruining a good show).

Can we ever have an Office talkback without the British version being mentioned? I've got nothing against it but plenty of people, myself included, like the American Office better and if you happen to be one of the people who doesn't, why the fuck do you feel the need to come into a talkback and express this? I'm glad their actually advancing her character.

    by shakes

I might guess that the Scranton Branch gets closed, downsized, whatever, and Michael actually does start his own paper company. Thus the show now focuses on this new location. Wouldn't be too too difficult to perceive most of the same people coming to work for Michael's new company if the Scranton Branch is closed. Oh, and bewareofaholywhore (great name btw) I think Pam going with Michael does kind of make sense, I mean she flunked out of art school, sees her life going nowhere, so she decides to take the risk. Think about the past. Remember the Dundee episode when she was the one who acted as a cheereleader when the awards came to a halt. Or the episode where Michael is the only one who shows up at her art gallery exhibit thing. I mean yeah, might not be the most sensible thing to do, but it does fit with her character.

That was the same Pam who walked on hot coals and made a public plea for Jim's affections, the same one who's shown flashes of compassion for Michael by playing along with the Dundees ceremony or, more recently, by taking a Dunder-Mifflin detour to help him win Holly back. has always had a maternal instinct when it comes to Michael. She knows he can succeed. He can be a good manager if he someone guides him and keeps him on track.

She's going with Michael so she can guide him, help him focus his energies on the right things. She knows how a paper company works. Also, I'm sure she sees an opportunity for herself to jump to that next level in her career, get in on the ground floor of a new company.

For the first time in awhile, there's a driving force behind the plot, and this one is the biggest in the entire series.

We'll get to see why Dunder Mifflin needs Michael as the Scranton branch falls apart under Charles and then another manager. We'll get to see the hardships of starting your own business. It's going to be great. I bet this show has a solid 2 years left before Michael Scott Paper is where everyone works and the series can end.

Loved that Pam left. As soon as she went quiet when she realized she now knew all there was to know about the new copier I knew she was going to leave. Hopefully they actually do something with this and not just use it as a 2 episode one off to show how inept Michael is at everyday life. I'm thinking Jim is getting the Regional Manager job after Charles selects someone woefully unqualified. Like Creed. That little ending seems to show that Charles has a very poor grasp on the skill sets of his employees, I don't think that was just a gag.

I laughed the hardest when Andy revealed Michael's plan to Dwight and then slid out the door with Michael distracted. Also it is fun to see Jim take shit from Charles since he's usually the one dishing it out.

He was one of the only people who cared about her art show and he even bought her painting of the office building. Michael's a clusterfuck but he's a good-hearted clusterfuck and his staff loves him because they understand how earnest and sincere he really is. This new boss is a typical douche with no real heart or concern for his employees. I just wish Dwight had attacked him like he protected Jim from Pam's old flame when he moved towards Michael aggresively.

Or her face as she's walking away with Michael at the end and the reality of the siuation comes to them. You nailed it! This ep was indeed a symphony of faces, it could have worked as a silent movie. Virtually every character had at least one scene where their expression spoke volumes! Not the funnest of times at Dunder Mifflin, but one of the best episodes this season, imho.

I saw Charles' choice of Kevin & Stanley as him having

    by big jim

no clue who these people are. He choses Kevin, probably the least technically-savvy employee, to handle the phones; he choses Stanley, a guy who spends as much time as he can at the office doing crossword puzzles, to be his Productivity Czar. I loved the look they both had at the end, neither one has any idea how to do what they have been asked to do.

Charles was going to hit Michael and rough him up at the end of last night's episode and that was going to get Charles fired and Michael re-hired. I'm so glad they instead did what they did. This is the twist this show needed and it's going to make it all fresh. Love it.

    Stanley / Kevin

    by steve young

Either Charles is "out of touch", or more likely, he picked what he perceived as the two slowest / laziest employees and assigned them something to DO for once. Charles is the opposite of Michael. When he gives an order, he's not going to explain WHY. "Just do it." (As incompetent as Michael is, I hate bosses like Charles, even if they get results). Oh, and say what you will about Creed's laziness - he's more of a con man, and can make anything think he's saddled with work.

    exie - Charles fired?

    by branniganslaw

I don't think so. Remember, Michael was previously escorted from the building. By sneaking back into the building, i.e. TRESPASSING, Michael was breaking the law.

    by branniganslaw

then you don't know anything about The Office. That move was *perfect* and totally in character. Besides, it's less of a risk for her since she keeps Michael on track and ensures that he deals with the important biz issues. And she will have greater status should the business take off.

    Charles fired & Michael re-hired?

    by haggardatbest

What is this, fan-fiction? Maybe next Jim & Pam and Ryan & Kelly and Michael & Holly will TOTALLY have a triple wedding! Michael quit. He's not getting "re-hired" because someone hits him. And Charles is a breath of fresh air for this show.

We've seen Michael Scott fail and we've seen him wallow in mediocracy, now I want to watch him succeed beyond anyone's wildest dreams. "You have no idea how high I can fly..."

The Jim/Charles dynamic should be interesting.

    by kid idioteque

I'm sure they won't hire another regional manager and will have Charles fill that role (being there as much as he can). They've already set up Charles hating Jim so I can definitely see Dunder Mifflin employees trickling off to Michael's company. This really is a great way to bring Michael's character full circle, redeeming him entirely.

Charles is entirely out of touch

    by larry sellers

This is the one really interesting story that's come out of this season. The last scene in "New Boss" was pretty unexpected. I'm not so skeptical about Michael being re-hired as Charles being fired. Charles is here to stay. Even if he lacks an understanding of employees he understands how a business is run which is totally consistent with Dunder Mifflin's past decisions. Remember, Michael has been more competent in season 5 than any other so far. His branch has been more successful than any other, he infiltrated and shut down a possible threat to DM's business, and he even showed that he's capable of initiating great, though half-assed, ideas (golden ticket completely back-fired but still...). David Wallace knows Michael has stepped up even if Michael himself isn't aware. I have no idea where the show's going but it's exciting. Also keep in mind that David Wallace is in love with Jim. If something happens between Jim and Charles, it's very likely that David will intervene.

The last scene in New Boss was...

    by thrillho77

so unexpected, only because it was so bogus. What a unbelievable group of characters this has become. This show was so refreshing when these characters all just had their foibles...when you thought they were normal, but just on the fringe, so to speak. Now, they're just a ridiculous bunch of maniacs and retards.

came close to arrested development greatness yesterday. Holy shit, the "Kenneth vision", and it's transition to Liz completely floored me, couldn't stop laughing for minutes. That only happened for me at AD's infamous "Giant Mole Fight" scene.

    Michael's new company

    by bizarrojerry

I hate to inject a sense of reality into a sitcom, but does anyone really think Michael can possibly start a successful competing company in the bad climate for the industry -- which even Andy seems to understand? Just doesn't seem very possible. He understands some aspects of the company, but he doesn't understand higher up corporate level thinking and the logistics of things. The only thing I can see is him somehow being able to siphon off the clients that he's brought in. His insane way of making a sale somehow works.

So... *you're* injecting a sense of reality into a sitcom by essentially repeating what Jim Halpert and Oscar Martinez said directly to Michael in that same ep?

    The Darkness/Bitterness

    by bunch-backdtoad

I, for one, love the new, more bitter/"down" feel that The Office has. The tone of the show is becoming something unlike almost any other comedy I've seen on American television. It nowhere near being a drama or even a "dramedy," but there's a lot of serious stuff dealt with amongst the humor. The major characters more and more have a very Chekhovian feel to them, that sense of being trapped and wanting to do something else, but being unable or unwilling to do so.

    Hey, Brannigan...

    by bizarrojerry

(Great username, btw) I guess what I really meant was I was trying to inject some reality into the talkbacks here, where some people seem to think it's reasonable Michael could compete with a bigger company. And also, aside from those characters saying that, I don't expect a sitcom to be fully realistic. One random comment here, but is anyone else really starting to like Oscar? (No, I don't mean in a gay way...) He is emerging as the only actually intelligent person on the whole show. They even let him have the last word of the teaser.

s a big reason Michael could actually expect special, or at least better, treatment.

    bitter tone...

    by bizarrojerry

I think I agree, Bunch-backdToad... that may be an aspect of the show that is making it lean slightly back in the direction of the more dreary Brit version. I love the subtle change in Pam and Michael's expressions as they round the end of the fence and go from hopeful and excited to afraid.
