Hanks To Play A Toy And An Astronaut As Mattel’s MAJOR MATT MASON!!

Published at:  Mar 24, 2009 10:47:49 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Tom Hanks needs to get back in space!

The actor is developing a movie based on Mattel’s satellite-dwelling astronaut action figure Major Matt Mason. It’s with Universal, the same studio that launched the “Toy Story” star into “Apollo 13.”

“Mission To Mars” screenwriter Graham Yost, who collaborated with Hanks on “From The Earth To The Moon,” kicks in the screenplay.

If the Lightyear-esque doll doesn’t ring a bell, it’s because Mattel stopped manufacturing Matt in the 1970s.

Sounds more fun than another sequel to “The DaVinci Code,” am I right?

Damm, why didn't Schwarzenegger ever buy the rights to DOC SAVAGE so he and James Cameron could make it. Savage looks as old as Arnie so it would still be perfect!

The movie that ripped off every sci-fi movie from 2001 to Star Trek IV and capped it all with an alien that sheds a tear for mankind just like that Native American from the anti-littering PSA.

I still have one of those toys. It used to be my Aunts and she gave it to me when I was a wee tyke. This movie would be kind of surreal.

p.s. In risking the wrath of the great Hercules, Angels & Demons is NOT a sequel. People who don't know any better could take that statement the wrong way.

    Cheers!

Peppersgc, the book Angels & Demons...

    by kmdr. coenig

...comes chronologically before the DaVinci book. However, A&D has been rewritten for the screen to serve as sequel.

Loved Major Matt when I was a kid, had Sgt. Storm too. But the damn wire armatures would break so easily. Doesn't mean I wouldn't want a reissue...

I loved Watchmen but damnit Hanks should have been The Comedian.

    by thecomedian

Supposedly he wanted the part at one point and was even going to produce it. That would have really given the "Forrest Gump with Superheroes" vibe Snyder was going for a whole other level of meta.

Frank Darabont was teamed up with Schwartzenegger to do DOC SAVAGE and Frank wrote the script but, at the time, it was deemed too expensive. Eventually the option ran out. I'd love to read that script!!!

(was born in '73), but I'm glad these boomer and tweener producers, directors, and actors are, in this instance, going back to what they are familiar with, instead of royally screwing a beloved gen-x property, of which they have no understanding of, or feelings of nostalgia toward.

    by abking

Wish I could get my hands on it. That film will most likely get made and become a small film with an unknown star. You need a Schwarzenegger or Spielberg to make it a huge event film. I wish they would greenlight it with a simple 80 million budget and push it to almost an R rating making the film "Savage" in nature. Rambo meets Indy.

So, will one of his arms dangle at an odd angle (like when the interior wire snapped inside)?Misson To Mars question: who wears the most annoying eyeliner? Gary Sinise in that or Nestor Carbonell in anything? I vote Sinise. Looks like he was heading out for a night of disco, instead of Mars.

    Tim ALLEN as Sgt. Storm.
    Seth Rogen as Doug Davis
Chris Tucker as Lt. Jeff Long and don't forget Scorpio and Calisto. Plus while they are at it add the complete line up of the Colorforms Outer Spacemen. There are no real new ideas anymore in Hollywood. I can see why Alan Moore hates that place.
