Taye Diggs Sinks His Teeth Into DEAD OF NIGHT!

Published at:  Mar 24, 2009 9:36:58 PM CDT

Beaks here...

With production now underway on Kevin Munroe's DEAD OF NIGHT (a live-action adaptation of Tiziano Sclavi's cult comic book, DYLAN DOG), the final pieces of the cast are snapping into place.

We already know that Brandon Routh is starring as Dylan, the "nightmare investigator" who specializes in cases dealing with vampires, werewolves and other nasty creatures. A few weeks ago, we learned that Sam Huntington will play his sidekick Marcus. Now, we've got word from ShockTilYouDrop.com that a) Taye Diggs is on board as the "leader of the vampires", and b) THE TUDORS' Anita Briem has been cast as Dylan's mysterious flame.

My familiarity with DYLAN DOG is pretty much limited to Michele Soavi's wonderful DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE (aka CEMETERY MAN), which was based on a novel by Sclavi that centered on a character who would later appear in the DYLAN DOG comic. Or something like that. I'm not expecting Munroe to deliver another DELLAMORTE, but I am keen to return to that haunted/humorous/tragic universe. They're shooting in New Orleans, so conjuring that type of atmosphere shouldn't be too tall an order. It's Routh I wonder about. I thought he was fine in SUPERMAN RETURNS, but I still haven't a clue as to what his strengths are as an actor. Can he pull off "gloomy romantic"? We're about to find out.

I used to love vampire flicks but the glut these last few years is wearing thin.
Twilight and that mongoloid Edward is the last straw. I'm officially done watching blood suckers.

Yes, there are way too many vampire flicks about. Between Underworld 3, Twilight, 30 Days of Night, Let the Right One In, True Blood, Moonlight and probable others I'm missing. This shit is well and truly overdone.

can someone please give Bryan Singer a break and let him make a sequel so he can kick ass. Superman Returns was an homage to the original. It was also a starting block for the sequel which I'm sure will be badassness. I'm gonna be pissed if i can't see what happens to Supes and who he fights.

Speaking of supercool, i hope Routh is good in this and gets hisself recast as Superdoopey Man. I like that movie.

Vampire story set in New Orleans, so fresh

    by buffy_

What other creative wonders can we expect from these bold filmmakers? Is the one billionth New Orleans vampire story really going to set the box office on fire? I smell direct-to-DVD and a marketing campaign aimed at Whedon's Buffy/Angel fans.

    Superman Returns

    by criticalbliss

Sucked. Never should have been made. That said, Routh was about the ONLY good thing in it. I'm surprised talkbackers are bitching about the one guy who brought something to the table. I know nothing about this new film, but it sounds interesting. Taye Diggs was good in Way of the Gun. He has a presence I didn't respect, without the pseudo-hiphop pansy-bitched posturing. I keep wondering when he'll get a film worthy of his potential.

    by 3rdrate

This is the goofiest X-Files rip-off idea for a movie since...well, X-Files 2. In the original comic, there's no partner named Marcus. There's a goofy guy who looks like (essentially is) Groucho Marx named Groucho, around to tell jokes. Dylan Dog is like an Italian Fox Mulder, except that in that in addition to solving paranormal cases, he fucks all his female clients (Italians have no problem with sex in comic books for kids, but question how we Americans stand the violence...I say, why can't we have both?).

This had better be really, really, really far from the source material for it to be any good.

    Enough Vampires

    by unscripted

I agree, I've seen enough vampire-related fiction, film, tv, etc., to last me the rest of a good long life. Every ten years or so there's a big bubble of vampire crap all over the bookstalls and film screens. Enough, already - they're a fuckin' made-up take on an ancient myth. I don't get what teen girls, goopy women and gothy fanboys see in this stupidity.
