Cannes '09 Opens UP!

Published at:  Mar 19, 2009 1:50:19 PM CDT

Beaks here...

Opening night hasn't always gone well for the Cannes Film Festival. Previous selections like BLINDNESS, MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS, THE DA VINCI CODE weren't just disappointments; they were outright disasters. So this year, festival organizers have turned to the studio with the best track record in Hollywood to break their run of opening night blunders.

It's no secret that Pixar is rather bullish on Pete Docter's UP. They've been screening a significant chunk of footage from the geriatric adventure yarn at press events and comic conventions for months now. And now they've earned the honor of being the first animated film to ever kick off the Cannes Film Festival. Based on the footage, I can state with supreme confidence that UP is already superior to those aforementioned opening night titles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, festival organizers haven't decided if UP will take a competition slot. Recent animated films to chase the Palme d'Or: PERSEPOLIS, INNOCENCE and the first two SHREK abominations.

    UP

From what I understand, is based (in part) on a woman here in Seattle who refused to sell her house to douchebag property developers, so they had to build around her.

    by sidius

It's easy to rip the entire Shrek franchise but the first one was a very good film. The rest of them though just awful bloated messes.

I actually thought Shrek 2 was pretty damn funny.

    by thelastcleric

The first really is a modern classic regardless. I haven't seen 3, which looked tired.

That is like saying the Godfather trilogy is a boing mess...

    by vic twenty

When that criticism really encapsulates only the third film. Shrek 1 was wonderful, Shrek 2 was fine. 3 was unfortunate, much like the career Mike Myers is left with. He is the new Bob Goldthwaite.

    Shrek Abomination

    by vic twenty

I think Shrek actually looked more like The Abomination than what Lettier was able to come up with in The Incredible Hulk. Ain't that something?

    My Blueberry Nights

    by rosncranz

My Blueberry Nights is not a disaster. Goodness sakes, just because it was not as strong as Wong Kar Wai's other works does not in any way make it a disaster. There is nothing more idiotic than when someone cannot qualify something and instead just say, "Terrible!" or "Amazing!"in typical monosyllabic fashion for this website.

Was it great? No, but it was by no means a disaster either. Nor was Blindness for that matter.
I swear Capone is just about the only person on this website that I can respect, everyone else is just an inarticulate fanboy.

Dreamwrorks Animation's story's are always weak

    by the_genteel_gentile

They rely on cheap gags and forced pop culture refrences without any of the cleverness and reinforced character content that makes Pixar so great. Kung-Fu Panda and possibly Antz are the two notable exeptions. A Shark Tale is the worst offender of this nonsensical, lazy, incepid method of storytelling. The Shrek films were okay but not innocent of these crimes either. Alot of the Dreamworks PDA movies are just a few notches above the witless depravity of those Scary/Date/Epic/Disater/Superhero Movie abominations.

I don't think Up will be able to out class Coraline.

    by the_genteel_gentile

Coraline was so good, I really don't think even mighty Pixar will be able to best it this year.

    by natecore

the last 20 minutes was too much. too many twists and nonimportant turns. The rest of the film is magical bliss.

I'm a teacher, and the kids here don't even think about Shrek 2 or 3 any more. They enjoy Shrek. They LOVE Nemo, Incredibles, Monsters Inc. It's all about the staying power. Shrek just don't got it.

    by logan_1973

Although my love for the source material might cloud my vision. Thing is, they didnt' improve much on a book that is damn hard to film. Not a great result, but far from a disaster.

My Blueberry Nights was pretty good

    by projectedlight

Not nearly Wong's greatest, but he's hit some dazzling highs and it was still a strong, worthwhile film. The screening wasn't a disaster either; reviews were lukewarm to positive, from what I remember. It wasn't like The DaVinci Code, where people were laughing throughout. Now THAT is a disaster of a screening.

far from an abomination. The other two though were horrible. As for UP, I can't wait to see how that is. I was kind of disappointed by Wall E.

    Shrek The Third is underrated

    by nasty in the pasty

And people whining about "lame pop-culture gags" in the Shrek series will be happy to note just how FEW references to other movies are including in that one. It's not as good as the first two (the second was terrific, I thought), but it's a more-than-respectable threequel.

Yeah, I live near Ballard, which is sadly being gentrified by the developers. Looked for a link to that story. The pic of the condo development dwarfing her house is disturbing: http://tinyurl.com/5ha8qq
