    by iamlegolas

when do we get some definitive answers on this movie in regards to it's production? We'll we see Spike's version as intended or do we have to wait for some kind of Criterion Collection version? I know the studios squelched rumors about Spike losing control of his production, but what about the rumors of him being told to tone it down because he was scaring some test audience kids? I WANT ANSWERS!!!

  • The one with Seth Rogen and a bunch of other no talent losers? Is this the first sign of the studio stepping in and messing it up? They're going to try to market to kids who love Bolt and it will fail. If they market it as it is, a fantasy told through the eyes of a child which will appeal to adults that still have an imagination and children who realize they deserve better entertainment than what they have. Just a side note, my mom's a kindergarten teacher, every now and then she plays my old DuckTales VHS tapes for them. They LOVE it. They don't want the crap they make these days.

Blown up to a 2 hour movie filled with superflous backstory, contrived relationships and manufactured conflict. Great idea, because flooding a beautifully simple tale with all that unnecessary shit always leads to a masterpiece (Seuss, Van Allsburg, etc). Critics and audiences will love the look of this movie and shit all over the basterdized story, as well they should.

I agree, I would HATE to be a kid growing up with today's "entertainment". My daughter loves all the old school movies and cartoons from my day. She loves Neverending story, princess bride, the last unicorn, and the muppet show, Tom & Jerry, etc. She still will watch Disney every now and then, but the repeat viewing are from my library. I bought this book for my daughter....

    by gringostar

and have read it to her many times over the past 3 years. Reading it as an adult, I have come to the conclusion that Max is one of those bratty little assholes you see on "Super Nanny" and "Nanny 911". I still love the monsters though and I fear that this movie will neuter them. I am on record as stating that this kid is waaaay to fucking old, distractingly old, to be wearing a wolf suit around the house - you know I am right. If the Watchmen sadly fails to excite the masses, I can't see how an adult take on a classic children's book will create box office magic. Oh and the poster is boring as shit! I think Max should be sailing in his boat at dusk with the island where the Wild things are in the distance: at the top of the poster it would have read "And he sailed off through night and day to..." and under the boat written over top of the ocean water it would read "Where the Wild Things Are" - or something to that effect. For me that would be much more interesting than what was produced. Just my two cents...

    Worried, but hopeful...

    by scrivener

I do NOT like Spike Jonze movies. However, everything I've seen of this shows that, *technically*, it's been done perfect justice. What concerns me is how the spirit and tone of the film will be conveyed. Neverending Story, Dark Crystal, Legend, Labyrinth... those were the children's movies of MY day... and besides Coraline and Lemony Snicket (to different extents), I long for the return of "kids movies" that don't talk down to kids. Remember those?

It is aimed at adults that read it as children. That is why it will fail.

    I really hope..

I remember reading a review on this site about a year ago telling us the movie was a one of kind childrens film that was scary, magical, and most importantly not pandering.

Hopefully, come Fall, we will see that movie.

    Poster strikes an interesting tone...

Clearly not aimed at kids. Though brave, inquiring young minds will be intrigued I'm sure!

The tag line is clever. The average adult will recognize the imagery, but the line will make them want to dig a little deeper into the story.

I think it's a striking image. Simple. Provoking. Fun. And a little dark. Very very nice.

I think Spike may have snuck another masterpiece below the radar!

If that kid was standing in centre frame...

...that tagline would have a whole other meaning, judging by the expression on his face. Do you think that's the non-kid friendly element the studio took a disliking to?

Is that the Addam's Family font?

I honestly am not sure how I feel about this film. It was my favourite book as a child (partly because my name is Max) and I can't imagine how this could possibly capture the the feeling of the book. I think this will probably be unintentionally terrifying, a la Polar Express.

    Excited to see this, BUT...

If they would have stuck with the vintage fantasy look of the source material, and just added a little Spike Jonze quirkiness, it might appeal to more people. I'm so over Hollywood taking creative license to "interpret" something that's fucking obviously successful at its original conception. Don't get me wrong, I'm still stoked to see this.
