SOPRANOS Creator David Chase Developing Movie Industry Miniseries For HBO!!

Published at:  Mar 16, 2009 2:00:06 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“The invention of cinema and subsequent growth of the Hollywood film industry” will be the subject of a miniseries that will return “The Sopranos” mastermind David Chase to HBO.

From the channel's press release:

Entitled A RIBBON OF DREAMS, the miniseries will begin in 1913 and follow two men, one a college-educated mechanical engineer, the other a cowboy with a violent past, who form an unlikely producing partnership and together become pioneers and then powers for a time in motion pictures. Chase will write and executive produce the miniseries, as well as direct the initial episodes.

The miniseries will follow the two main characters as they begin as employees of D.W. Griffith, and then cross career paths with John Ford, John Wayne, Raoul Walsh, Bette Davis, Billy Wilder and others who gave shape to Hollywood as it grew from the age of rough-hewn silent Westerns, to the golden era of talkies and the studio system, to the auteur movement, to television, and finally to the present day.

Assuming both of the main characters are 20 in 1913, they’ll be 116 years old in 2009. Legs!

Or maybe YOUNG GEORGE LUCAS CHRONICLES.

Could be okay if they don't focus too much on stringing cameos together and tell actual stories.

I don't think that Rome can really be counted as an example of HBO ditching a series. I agree with the rest (especially Deadwood) but Rome was originally planned for three seasons and was later cut down to two. And I recall reading somewhere about the creator of Rome saying how the merging of Season 2 and 3 actually improved the pacing of the story. Season 2 was phenomenal and I'm not sure I would've liked having the Brutus storyline carried out over a whole season.

As for Carnivale, I thought the ending was sufficient. Anything more would've been a completely new story thread.

Anyone that watched John from Cincinatti should've known that show was going to get canned early on. Personally, I fucking loved that show but that too, I thought, ended well. Honestly, I'm not sure I would've even wanted a second season of JC.

I'm not disagreeing with you, so much as arguing against the massive bashing that HBO gets for its ending of shows. That said, the cancellation of Deadwood was one of the biggest crimes on quality entertainment EVER committed by a network.

Set in 1913? The budget will shorten it's life.

    by brock landers baby

It costs money to shoot in period sets.So it won't run as long as Sopranos.
    Still,it's David Chase.

If only it were a tv show and you could just ignore the aging thing or come up with some creative way around it, without your dipshit fans crying bullshit over it because they're all creatively bankrupt from being brainwashed by hollywood. Any attempt to introduce artistry or anything creative is met with derision. People want to see more gangsters get killed! They want a real ending with Tony getting killed because that's a real ending, not some cut to black shit! Fuck you all, you brain dead morons.

I read an interview w/ the writer of Rome where he said the original plan was to take the show straight through to Christ...Which is why there was some talk about a Rome movie a couple of months back. They should have at least done the Deadwood movies...I hate hate hate it when shows are left open ended like Twin Peaks. I can't rewatch those shows because I know that there is no ending! At least have a quick 2 episode wrap up for crying out loud!

Still mad at the Soprano's Ending

    by romanocc

I still think the ending the Sopranos was the biggest cop-out in the history of TV. Everyone who analyzes it is looking WAY too much into that scene, Chase didn't know what to do, so he left it ambiguous and that way no one can pin him on either killing Tony or not. The Sopranos in its heyday was as good as a TV series can be, but the show started sliding halfway through Season 4 when Furio started falling in love with Carmela, and then Season 5 the show became mediocre. Chase simply ran out of stories by that time, and the show was a shell of what it used to be. Chase originally stated he would only do 4 seasons and he went on 3 too many because of the almighty $$$$$. There was no arc to this show, but there could have been with Tony, instead it just turned into a routine mob show.

In my opinion I think it's pretty sad, that you've been so brainwashed by Hollywood into needing a traditional neat and tidy clear cut ending to everything, so much that you can't even rewatch Twin Peaks knowing it doesn't have one. Does a nontraditional conclusion suddenly invalidate everything that came before? What does that say about real life then, where nothing ever gets an "ending."

Season 6 of the sopranos is...

    by emeraldboy

a conteplation on death. death is final, blunt, short. tony knew it was coming to him. Death creeps up on you and you dont see it coming tony said that. everyone had abandoned tony in end. Death is sudden. at the start of season six when Uncle Junior shoots tony and tony ends up in the hospital. We see what would have happend if tonys life had been different. Chase could have given the sopranos a blood bath ending. but that Chase has said would have to obvious. and critics would have complained that loudly too. So chase went the really quiet route. They all arrive for the last supper. there is also an element of the ides of march. Caeser did see brutus with a knife behind his back and Tony didnt see his killer fire that fatal bullet. we never saw tony hit the ground. Death, is swift, severe and brutal. the sudden black out represents all that. Tony knew he was going to die he just didnt know where or when. but he knew it.

Cool! Will it have plot elements that go nowhere?

    by photoman

Like the Sopranos...introduce interesting plot elements, then totally drop them altogether without even an explanation? That will be SO cool! Like giving FBI girl a family and a personality when she was trying to go undercover with Adriana. Then turning into Robot-Woman with no feelings, no personality no nothing after she tells Adriana she's FBI. And of course, the Russian they let escape off camera...with so many possibilities of having him not only return, but getting into some sort of turf-war with the Russian mob. But no..let's just let him run off camera and never speak of it again until 2 seasons later Pauly mentions something in passing about it....like 2 lines worth. Great going there. Let's face it, the Sopranos was good in the first 2 seasons, then it just went down hill and David Chase provided no follow up on anything. Some people argue "hey, that's how life is sometimes, you don't always have resolved issues". You know what...FUCK YOU. This is drama. It's a story. Try telling a compelling story that actually has an ending. What, people aren't creative enough to come up with endings to plot cycles? Chase seems to be able to come up with great beginnings and middles...but no endings. Those that argue that it's like that in real life, how about this: Have a whole episode where Uncle Junior just stares out the window in the nursing home looking at birds. Doesn't say anything, just looks at the birds for an hour. How about that? Hey, that's real life too.

That show sucked big time after season three. Chase would cocktease us with great plot turns, such as the terrorist plot line, the gambling plot line, then he'd just forget about it. Much like the way he simply ended the series.
